Rewrite of ACQ-Kingdom Broadcasting Network

Hi! As per AfD suggestions, I rewrote the ACQ-Kingdom Broadcasting Network article. Since you voted there, I thought you'd like to know. --William Pietri 03:07, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Your pictures

I'm about to have a go at uploading some of your pictures (Toadmoor Tunnel etc.) I've copied them off your site, presumably I can put "Kindly supplied by User:RHaworth (with the double square brackets and show them as GDFL (with the curly brackets) Chevin 13:54, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Please feel free since I have not managed to get a round tuit in three months. I know it is more trouble but could you please upload to the commons. You can link to my user name in just the same way because I am registered there. The GFDL template there is fine by me (and GDFL works too!). -- RHaworth 13:59, 14 November 2005 (UTC)
I've upoaded the pics. While still feeling my way around the process, I did rename them so as not to get them mixed up. Having got a taste for it, I've also redecorated Belper railway station. Also noted on my talk page. Chevin 09:51, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

A quick Google search shows this is a summary for a television cartoon show episode, of the television show "Camp Lazlo". See TV.com. --AllyUnion (talk) 11:19, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

OK. So remove the speedy tag and add better context than just the unlinked word Lazlo. We have someone who has been posting ideas for episodes - see Talk:Camp Lazlo#Phony Episodes and I assumed this was another. -- RHaworth 11:37, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

Re: Wikibook. - Absolutely - I have just finished this morning the division of the article into chapters in preparation for a move to Wikibooks. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the procedures for inter-wiki moves, and will also have to upload images and diagrams to the to that wiki also (images contain much explanatory text and various diagram cross-links, so it does not seem appropriate for the commons). What I need is some assistance by someone experienced in such a move. Can you assist or recruit someone? (Please answer on my user talk page, please, as I am not watching anything until I purge my watchlist). Thanks, - Leonard G. 20:05, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

List of Jewish lawyers

I am not at all happy about this - what you did made the list almost undetectable and destroyed the point about the name. I have put in a link on the Jewish jurists page, which should get round the first problem unless and until someone removes the link.

I am not familiar with the arbitration procedure; any advice and assistance you can offer would be gratefully received. No doubt such things are common on Wikipedia, but I have never been involved in anything like this. - RachelBrown 10:14, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

Start from Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration.
Discussions about article titles always seem a bit futile to me - as long as you have redirects, does it really matter what the title is? But a fork is not the way to decide - a move should be discussed on the article's talk page. -- RHaworth 10:24, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, but the article title is a trivial part of the dispute. I suggest that you read the talk page if you are interested. - RachelBrown 21:40, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

Syndisphere Deletion

Honestly, I can't even remember what was in that article since I hadn't looked at it since I rewrote it after finding it at WP:DEP back in the summer, and may well have supported deleting it had it gone to WP:AFD. However, I just noticed that you speedy deleted it according to the reason "nonsensical blogcruft". I was wondering if you could tell me which of the criteria for speedy deletion you felt that met (rather than being grounds for a nomination at Articles for Deletion). As the text at the time of deletion was still predominately what I'd left after rewriting, I'd appreciate the feedback to use on my future edits. The Literate Engineer 21:54, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

Here is the text:
{{db|There is no such thing as syndisphere. This definition only exists on some stupid blog, and every one of the measly 600 google hits for this is either a blog or a mirror of wikipeida.}}
The syndisphere is a region of the internet similar to the blogosphere, but incorporating the space within syndicated RSS or Atom feeds. The syndisphere adds large news sites such as the BBC or New York Times to smaller applications or services capable of generating RSS/ATOM feeds, such as update notices for webcomics, to the blogosphere's great content.
External links   Here comes the Syndisphere
I have one criterion for speedy deletions: "how do I think it would fare in an AfD debate". This one might well be condemned as "neologism / protologism" - only 600 Google hits compared with 18 million for "blogosphere".
As with most deletion queries, I have no stong feelings. If you re-create it, I will take no action. -- RHaworth 06:46, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
Nah, I'm not interested in re-creating. As that was the text, I'm thinking I'd have gone with deleting it as a neologism, too. Like I said, I'd just picked it at random from the Dead-End Pages list and dealt with that, and my interest in asking you was really that it's the first page I've worked on that's ever been speedy-deleted, and since I like to think of myself as a positive contributer to Wikipedia, not one who's writing candidates for speedy deletion. So I figured I'd check out what happened with this one. The Literate Engineer 07:04, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Leobreaker article

It is utterly incomprehensible to a naive reader what it is about. I don't think merely linking to things such that you can look around a lot and ultimately figure out what an article refers to is sufficient. You have to give some context. --Pmetzger 14:55, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

I agree, you have to give context. Like telling me which article you are talking about. -- RHaworth 14:59, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
My apologies. I misspelled the title. It is Leobreaker. --Pmetzger 15:16, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
At least it had more context than Joey and the Big Break (Part I) or Float Trippers ! I agree with you that authors of totally context-free articles should be penalised - the authors of both the above two examples had some of their contributions deleted. But Leobreaker had sufficient context to justify keeping it - rather than discussing it with me you should have slapped a {{context}} tag on it. It seems a bit contradictory that you should seek to delete Leobreaker where the author had gone to the trouble of providing several wikilinks but you would defend retaining crude copy and pastes where the author has done negligible work. -- RHaworth 16:13, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
{{context}} tag provided. Please check if you're happy with the result. --Pmetzger 16:42, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Reversion of speedy tag on Cornelius article

I assume from your reversion of my tag that this atrociously written article has something to do with Harry Potter or some such. From reading the article, it appeared to be a speedy as patent nonsense because it contains absolutely no context. As I myself am unfamiliar with the topic, could you please at least give it a brief opening that places it in context? I will be placing a cleanup tag on the article, and I think you will agree with me that this action is warranted. Sorry for my mistake. Indrian 16:50, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

To Indrian and anyone else who looks at this page:
  • I expect wikilinks here. I should not have to investigate to find that you are talking about Cornelius Rumstuckle.
  • I expect people to give a reason when they nominate an article for deletion. Always use {{db|reason}} or one of the innumerable specific reason tags such as {{nn-bio}}. In the case of Cornelius Rumstuckle you had use a simple {{delete}} tag. It was not obvious to me why you thought it should be deleted, so as a matter of principle, I reverted.
I care not a fig what you do with the article. -- RHaworth 00:44, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of page "Marvel Database Project"

Hello,

I was hoping I might ask why so speedily you did away with my Marvel Database Project 'stub page', that I fully intended to work on this evening upon returning home. I realize it contained little content at the moment you deleted it, but I assure you it would have in a few hours. The article pertains to an external MediaWiki-run database of comicbook information. Not unlike this article about a similar Star Trek related MediaWiki-run database site.

I plan to recreate the page you have deleted and I emplore you not to delete it so hastily. Regards. Jamie

It is never a good idea to create stubs or placeholders - work in your sandbox until you have something that looks like an article. I shall not touch it but I assume you have read Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Marvel Database Project and can show that it has become notable in the last six months. -- RHaworth 02:38, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
I apologize. I will not create any more placeholders, but rather hold my peace until work on a content-rich article is ready for posting. Would you do me the favour of having a brief look at the article and telling me what you think? I would appreciate the advice. Thank you kindly. --JamieHari 14:18, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

Help

I was trying to edit out old comments and make a table of helpful links (to tutorial and folks who have assisted, and the links they gave me for various issues), and now I can't edit the top section of my talk page. I tried reverting to the last page in history (your comment) but that didn't work. Is there some way to edit one's own talk page. I am really trying to get the hang of this but it's not easy.Blooferlady 11:09, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

GBthumb template

Hello - you mentioned on the talk page for GBthumb template that you wanted to calculate the pixel values, but the map wasn't scaled right. I would like to do that with a map that I have that IS scaled right - but I don't know how to do the calculation - how did you intend to do it inside the template? Thanks for any help - PAR 12:44, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

how?

I would see it work thus. When creating a new map link in an article:

  • Create a call {{GBth1|gridref}}, click "show preview" and open the link created by GBth1 in a new window
  • providing the thumbnail map is alligned on OSGB36, the calculation is simple:
    • dot_offset_right = constant_r + OSGB36eastings / scale_factor
    • dot_offset_down = constant_d - OSGB36northings / scale_factor
  • template:GBth1 will create a link to {{oscoor}} with an extra parameter to say 'don't redirect to a map sources page, just display the dot_offset's'.
  • Change the {{GBth1 ...}} call to {{GBthumb2|dot_offset_right|dot_offset_down|gridref}} and save the article. (It will be better to create a new template to avoid affecting existing uses of GBthumb.)

Ie. nothing high-tech and not within the template - but let us have the map and I should be able to do the rest. Tell us the grid coordinates of the edges of the map please.

What we really need is a URL which will take a grid ref and size as parameters and return a .png with the dot in place. But that is beyond my tech knowledge at the moment. -- RHaworth 18:56, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

More on template

Hello - It turns out that there is some distortion in my map as well, so I think mine should be done on a case by case basis as well. The implementation I have made is at Template:GBNewYorkState. (I used the GB before I realized it meant "Great Britain".) But I have a further problem - I have three browsers, Foxfire, Microsoft explorer, and Netscape. Each place the dot in a different position, with netscape being the worst - it seems to set the dot as if it was given a negative y value, and the dot winds up below the map instead of on it. Do you know anything of this problem, or anyway to make the process more browser-independent? One possibility is that I have extracted the table entry from GBthumb and used just that as the template, which gives more formatting freedom, but I wonder if the setup parameters in the GBthumb table are causing the browser problem. Thanks for any help you can give - PAR 16:21, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

  • Oh dear, I am awfully insular, I never thought you might be talking about "foreign". To start with a digression - I was horrified to see that template:Infobox City contains "naked" latitude and longitude. I consider this the height of obscenity and whenever I see it, I immediately want to clothe the coordinates with template:coor or one the many templates which call coor. I consider having a link to one of Egil's brilliant Map Sources pages far more important than having a dotty map in the article.
negative y value, and the dot winds up below the map - remember that the y value is measured downwards from the top so dot below the map would mean y being taken as too large.
I have noticed small differences between browsers, as can be seen in this compound of various screenshots of the Ansford article, but nothing as bad as what you suggest. Nothing strikes me as wrong with Template:GBNewYorkState (except please move it to a sensible name asap). But a few thoughts. Try some of the articles which use Template:Ie citytown infobox - which is what I cribbed template:GBthumb from - how do they look in different browsers. All three templates use two levels of <div> one immediately inside the other - can we afford to eliminate one level.
Go to any GB map sources page such as ST641330, select the Multimap with circle option and study its source code - that uses a separate image file for the circle. On the other hand when Streetmap or Ordnance Survey apply an arrow or highlight, they so it with a server-side generated image - which is the only permanent solution to this problem.
-- RHaworth 18:11, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Hello - thanks for the many links, especially that Egil link - that is great. The small differences you have shown in dot location are about the same as what I see - except for the netscape, which is an old version, and perhaps that's the reason. Thanks again for the help. PAR 02:50, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

PS - You use funny English. Dotty, that translates to "beautifully dot-enhanced", right? Also, I'm not doing any foreign maps right now, just New York State. :)

Re:KNH

Yeah, I was trying to create a link in my signature that would go to WP:NH when clicking on the old man on the mountain jpg. A friend of mine told me I needed to make a template or a usersubpage or reupload the file or something, but nothing worked. I might delete that page later, not sure if i'm going to try again. karmafist 00:10, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

One of your deletions

I think you may have been duped into deleting an Article for Deletion log: [1].

This user appears to be bent on having the history of the deletion removed. Note also that they appear to have moved and also managed to have gotten the talk page deleted as well. Locke Cole 10:40, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Many thanks. Now fixed - I hope. -- RHaworth 11:35, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

db-contact

OK, we can maybe discuss the case of Robert Cibis, but what is Sdc.com except a sorry excuse for the weblink at the end? Cheers, --QEDquid 19:10, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

  • I like to know that the nominator and I are on the same wavelength before I delete an article. With sdc.com my objection was to the deletion reason you gave - it suggested that you might not have read the article and were simply nominating it on moral gorunds. Sure it is probably speediable as advertising. -- RHaworth 19:17, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
Great, please put your choice of db- in there then. --QEDquid 08:52, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

Meandering Diatribes

In response to your request on my talk page to see an example of a meandering diatribe, take a look at this early version of a page. There's good content there but the opining is all over the place (search forward for the word "police" and you'll see what I mean): [2]

As for consistency in terms ... bike trails, bike paths, bicycle trails, bicycle paths, cycling trails, cycling paths ... these terms are non-standardized in ways that appear to be mostly regional (and in fact even official literature seems to use them inconsistently). There should probably be some discussion on the terminology in Wikipedia:WikiProject Cycling, though that project doesn't seem as interested in paths / trails as it is in the history of cycling and bicycle maintenance and such.

Thanks for the tip on Moving.

I'll definitely look into the coord tag, too, though for some of these paths I don't even know the basic info like where they start and end.

As an aside -- should I be replying to you by editing your talk page, or adding comments, or is there some easier way to communicate that I'm missing? With my current method, I have to keep two browser windows open to reply point-for-point. Tom guyette 01:34, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

I agree, that South Bay bicycle path version is terrible. Personally I think I would have transwiki'd it to Wikitravel and started over.
You are still creating totally stubby articles. I could validly flag Yorba Linda bicycle path, for example, for speedy deletion as an empty article - place holders are not needed in Wikipedia. In general it is better to have a red link which highlights the need for an article than have a stub or temporary redirect which masks the absence of a proper article. As a minimum, your articles should contain one sentence stating in what city the path is!
There are too many proposed sections: Maintenance and Current Condition could probably be run together. References and External links can be omitted - even newbies are likely to create them properly and what are you expecting to go in Acknowledgements? You could however possibly add an History section.
The convention I follow on talk pages is normally to continue the thread on the page where it started. The cut and paste I did to your talk page was non-standard. What's wrong with having multiple windows open? I am doing this in one window but I am having to scroll back to see your comments which is just as bad as having two windows. -- RHaworth 08:58, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

Sunderland (railway) station

I'm curious why you moved Sunderland station to Sunderland railway station and used the vandal rollback tool on the UK railwy stations page? I also note that you didn't alter any of the other inbound links. I was under the impression that the relevant naming convention was:

  • Mainline station only = X railway station
  • London Underground station only = X tube station
  • T&W Metro station only = X Metro station
  • Any combination of the above = X station.

If this is the case then Sunderland, served by the Tyne and Wear Metro and Northern Rail mainline trains, should be at Sunderland station. Which is why I created the page there in the first place. If I'm wrong can you point me in the direction of the naming convention page as I've obviously not remembered what I should have done! Thryduulf 23:29, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

  • I do apologise. I did those edits too hastily and agonised over them all night! Having checked Wimbledon, Mitcham Junction, East Croydon, Elmers End and Beckenham Junction, I had no hesitation in reverting my edits. Sorry. -- RHaworth 08:58, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
    • Thank you for explaining, reverting and appologising. Thryduulf 16:05, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
Once aain I would like to point out that there is no reason for this arbitrary, false, inaccurate and inappropriate naming spree. For Sunderland Station the article should be named Sunderland Station unless the station bore a particular name. Captain scarlet 00:04, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

"electrical earthing"

Hi, Roger. I noticed you were the admin that deleted "electrical earthing". It looks like a newbie User:Poobarb has come along and recreated it as a redirect to Ground (electricity). Obviously, that doesn't need to be a redirect. Since I'm not an admin, I can't delete it. There already are several redirects to Ground (electricity) based on the term earth, but there isn't one called Electrical earthing. Is that one that needs to be added? —Tox 06:12, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

  • I have deleted and created as you can see above. I am always puzzled as to why people so often create articles with "'s round their titles. Sometimes it is because they have followed a mal-formed link with the "'s inside the [['s but at other times there seems to be no reason at all. -- RHaworth 08:58, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
  • My guess is they have used a search term with "'s in, thinking they are required for finding an exact phrase, à la Google. Thryduulf 16:03, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
  • Yeah, I've been puzzled about that, too. Lately I've taken to checking Special:Lonelypages and trying to clean up the articles with "'s round their titles. Usually they've already been made redirects, so I RFD them. Thanks for taking care of that one. —Tox 01:07, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
  • Good heavens, don't bother with RfD, I will always delete them with {{db|unwanted redirect}}. -- RHaworth 01:09, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
  • Ah the complexities of deletion . . . . I believe there's a proposal out there to allow user deletion wherein the page is blanked and the links become links to a page that doesn't exist, but the history and talk page are preserved, and the rare page that really needs to be totally eradicated is left for the (currently) swamped admins. That would make all of this so much simpler. I'll switch over to speedy deletions. Thanks for the advice. —Tox 06:06, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for reverting the edits done to my userpage. I hadn't even noticed them. Although, now that he's done this, I can nip his name off to CVU. I'm tempted to leave them in place though, out of spite for him. Heh. Have a good day. -^demon 20:47, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Invitation to the Forgotten Realms project

Hi,

We are working on a Forgotten Realms Project to map Toril (mostly Faerûn, at the present). Since you contributed quite a lot on a Forgotten Realms-specific entry, I'd like to invite you to join the project, so we could improve the “Mapping the Realms” project.

The goal is to create a sort of World Factbook for the Realms. This means:

  • A consistent content
  • Use of templates
  • Entries should be limited to “sovereign places”: states and free cities, as well a moderately-inhabited place such as the Western Highlands.

On top of this, we also plan to cover Lost Empires, such as Pelvuria or Imaskar and, of course, Netheril

Main contributors are presently

If you know some other person who would be interested, feel free to forward the invitation!

Feel free to take a look. We hope to see you soon mapping the Realms with us! Reply to David Latapie 12:47, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

  • No thanks. I am way behind on mapping the well remembered realms of Great Britain. I have no interest in venturing beyond there. -- RHaworth 12:51, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Why'd you delete my Quik Summary Page? Seriously, it was intended to be a short summary about NWC, with different info then the main NWF page. --Ac1983fan 22:17, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

  • When people leave messages here, I expect them to provide links to the articles in question. a) I have not deleted your page. b) explain why you feel the need for a separate page - if you have extra info, why can you not add it to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection? -- RHaworth 22:20, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
  • Sorry... It's just that, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection page is just, like, technical stuff, and the game summarys are just about the games. so, I felt like making a page that was going to hold a little bit of info about all of it in one place. --Ac1983fan 20:25, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

Speedying articles on WP:AFD

I just closed a bunch of discussions on WP:AFD where you had speedied the article in question. It helps keep WP:AFD in order if admins who speedy listed articles remember to close the AFD subpage. Jamie 06:26, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

  • I take the view that if the article should never have been sent to AfD but speedied, then I won't bother to close the AfD. However a) Scottish hell, The Constant Telgram and Fredorof were marginal between speedy and AfD and b) someone has to close the AfD. So perhaps I better be more helpful in future. -- RHaworth 06:45, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
    • I actually don't mind the speedies. If I see something redlinked on AfD because it has been speedied, I take the liberty of closing the subpage myself. Like you said, someone has to do it... :-) I only decided to be annoying and leave you a note after closing the three-in-a-row that you mentionned above. Jamie 08:48, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Light Current's talk page

Roger, It was I who posted the 'empty' tag on my talk page to show User:mikka that his assumption about its use was in fact wrong. His own talk page has been locked so I cant reply to him there. This was after a series of uncalled for attacks on my editing and my talk page layout. I have now restored my talk page to what it was and Im assuming there will be no more unauthorised edits there. Thanks for your time!--Light current 17:34, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

  • "Unauthorised" is a strange word to use in a wiki context especially in connection with a user_talk page. Count yourself lucky that I did not take your {{empty}} tag at face value and just delete the whole page! -- RHaworth 17:57, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Roger, Im confused about your staement on 'empty' tags. Are you saying that if I have an empty tag any where on my talk page, my talk page is liable to be deleted? As I said its there for illustration only.BTW for unauthorised read disruptive RSVP--Light current 18:00, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

  • If you place an 'empty' tag on a page in the way that you did, then the page will be listed in CAT:CSD - try it if you don't believe me. In doing this you are, to use your word, being disruptive to admins by presenting them with a spurious deletion request. Since a user can legitimately ask for their talk page to be deleted if it has received offensive posts, a sleepy admin could well have simply deleted the page - and why not, if it has a speedy tag on it? -- RHaworth 18:23, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

OK I was not aware of this procedure and was not in any way intending to be disruptive but merely trying to quote the text of the TAG for User:mikkas benefit. I thought this was the easy wasy to do it. I have now modified my talk page to remove the tag whilst still keeping the text of it. I apologise for my ignorance on this matter. i ve learned something new today! --Light current 18:32, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

  • a) he is not User:mikka, he is User:mikka. b) I had already "neutralised" the 'empty' tag for you (I needed to use subst: twice) so that it appeared exactly as a normal 'empty' notice but without the category assignment. -- RHaworth 18:45, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Thank you. Alls well that ends well!--Light current 23:22, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I was attempting to create a User:clavichord category, and perhaps I made a few mistakes, but, if memory serves, it was functioning. Why exactly did you delete them? Were all of them non-functioning? I'm sure the tone of your note on my talk page was intended to convey concern. I appreciate that. If you can help me by pointing me in the right direction to find help to create the categories correctly, I would be most grateful. InFairness 19:24, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Why did you revert my edits? Mike 09:35, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

It is extremely out of date and not a neccesary article. Mike 09:36, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
  • You confuse me, I see only one edit. I used rollback, since you had given no reason why you thought the article should be deleted, I saw no need to give a reason for rollback. Please, always use {{db|reason}} or one of the many specific-reason templates. In this specific case out of date and not a neccesary are not speedy criteria but feel free to submit the article to AfD. -- RHaworth 09:43, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Your assistance

Thank you for your advice. In its place (on the talk talk page) it is clear to what this refers, as it is linked from the NPOV tag-box. I have restored it there, so that discussion can take place in the "proper" way -- that is, as defined in the NPOV protocol. It is surely as improper to defame someone on a discussion page as on a main page and I would suggest that whoever wrote the comment about Mr.Larouche is the person after whom you should be going. (I do not refer to the listed name -- I am all too aware how easy it is to forge an identity on Wiki-space)
My congratulations on your number of edits -- I would imagine that this number probably entitles you eventually to membership of the cabal who run the 'paedia and then you can delete and re-edit whatever you like, without having to worry what anyone else thinks.
For the avoidance of doubt the foregoing is an expression of opinion, not of averred fact, and any perceived defamation of anyone (including the Wiki-cabal) is an exercise of freedom of speech to express that personal, non-binding-on-others, opinion -- SockpuppetSamuelson 14:19, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Cool down my friend. I googled the word "stody" with the person's name "Ben Weston" and got no results. Editing articles solely to avoid single redirects is not an efficient effort since there is no harm and the template works as always. Over time, I'm sure someone will adjust the articles, when the do other edits. -- Netoholic @ 08:52, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Places in Lincolnshire

Hi

Why did you go all the way through all the place articles for Villages in Lincolnshire (90% of them created by myself), removing the two links giving links to a map, and an arial view, and replace it with an inferior link that is less user friendly and requires the user to do a lot more work to find the maps I had supplied in my two links??

Do you not feel you should have discussed this on the discussion page first, before destroying hours and hours of my work??

I now intend to go all the way through the hundred and fifty or so articles you have mangled, restoring the multimap/streemap link, which took me so ling to get right. Your link is inferior in most respects, when it comes to information provision and user friendliness.

Please do not make such drastic edit without discussing it first, in future. Having done a few, it should have been clear I am the main contributor to this entire category, and intend to provide an article for every single village.

User:lincspoacher

Arial is a font, aerial is the word you should use. Gosh, you have just noticed - I had almost forgotten about these edits.
The objections to direct multimap links are:
  • they restrict user choice to one mapping source
  • they are fragile, in that a change to multimap's software may render them invalid
  • they make a diff display very difficult to read, eg. [4].
However I have no strong feeling about your re-instating them, providing you retain a link in each article to "kvaleberg.com ... region:GB" using coor gbx, gbmapping or equivalent. It may be a little less user friendly but it is undoubtedly superior in respect of information provision.
But please do not code the links in each article. Use templates such as mmuknr map - see template talk:gbmapping or if they don't suit, develop your own templates. Just think: multimap could change their calling parameters without warning and they would be less responsive to complaints than I am! Use templates and you will have far fewer places to change.
As to discussing, the wiki motto is be bold. I did not change all your articles in one heavy session, it is just unfortunate that you were not watching at the time. -- RHaworth 21:01, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Well I wouldnt have minded if you left my links in and just added your own, but you didnt, you just deleted them, and I also wouldnt have minded if you had carefully worked your way through starting at A, but you havent, you seem to have randomly picked every third village.

I was offline (ill) for 6 months, and this is a long term project, theres about 500 villages to do, and im the person doing most of the donkey work. Dont make it any harder for me..............

user:lincspoacher

Please sign using ~~~~ so we get the date as well. Very sorry if you feel I have been spoiling your work. My only aim was the improvement of Wikipedia.
I removed your links because of my very strong objection to hard-coding such horrible URL's within an article. I have just changed template:mmuknr map so that it puts a location circle in. Please use it and template:mmuknr photo.
I was finding your articles using Wikisearch for multimap. Is there another way I could have found them, reliably, in alphabetical order?
To summarise: use templates and provide a link to kvaleberg.com ... region:GB and you will never hear from me again! I have lists of hundreds of GB articles that lack any sort of map reference - it is there that I should be spending my time.
Incidentally, have a look at Pintomap - http://www.pintomap.com/ (hint - zoom in!). You will probably find that it knows about your articles which use coor_gb or coor_gbx but I bet it does not include articles which just have direct multimap links. -- RHaworth 22:02, 15 January 2006 (UTC)
Sorry to hear you have been ill. Welcome back. Keep up the good work and don't mind me. -- RHaworth 22:36, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Hoax's and Sock puppets

I want to bring to your attention that Connor Anderson is the main editor on Rose To Fame and Paulo Fontaine who is the main editor on Lee Farrant are trying to influnce the votes on Afd page for the two articles mentioned.

Conner Anderson has also signed under a different name: [5]

I don't know what's his connection to CambridgeBayWeather, but I will notify him just to be sure.

I suspect that Anderson and Fontaine are connected (friends, sock puppet?). --DelftUser 20:19, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

  • I think Anderson and Fontaine are different people and I am sure neither person has the slightest connection with CambidgeBayWeather - I wonder how they have even come across his name. Having nominated them, I would not close these debates (I don't get involved with regular AfD closures anyway) but I am confident that the admin who does close them will see through any sock puppetry and delete both articles. -- RHaworth 20:47, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Tam O'Shanter

I see that you moved "Tam o'Shanter (Burns Poem)" to "Tam o' Shanter (Burns poem)" (with a lowercase p). That's fine, but shouldn't (pedantically speaking) this rather be "Burns' poem" or "Burns's poem"? But then again I don't know the rules, so it's up to you. Cheers, 131.111.8.101 20:53, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Please remember to log in when you contribute - especially to a talk page. At least that particular IP address does have a user page! I don't know the rules - I just do my thing and wait for someone to point me at the rule. But in this case I think it is valid to use Burns adjectivally without apostrophe as in Nissen hut, Belisha beacon or Anderson shelter. (Those were the first examples that sprang to my mind - don't they make me seem old!) -- RHaworth 21:09, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
    • Fair enough, that's all right. As for logging in, at least I sign my edits using ~~~~ ! :) cheers 131.111.8.101 21:14, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Geograph template

Note, i've now updated {{geograph}} here to match the commons version. Thanks/wangi 22:55, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Yes. It was a pity to throw out the grid ref, but with the commons one being used 20 times more than the en: one, I have to admit that was the direction to change. Now we need to lean on Mark J, Grinner and possibly others to apply the geograph template to their uploads. -- RHaworth 23:01, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
The first time I tried to use the template in the commons it didn't work. Perhaps I typed it in wrong. I shall endeavour to use it future. Grinner 13:53, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Image tags

When you are using the no source tag on images, you need to include all the parameters like {{no source|month=January|day=17|year=2006}} so that admins can easily delete them after seven days. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:17, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

I have a rooted objection to writing out the date in this weird manner when I can just enter ~~~~~ - OK, I know five tildes generates different depending on one's proclivities for date format. But in any case don't we now have OrphanBot to handle these things - I note it happily doing this edit where the tags had no date at all! -- RHaworth 08:04, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Requesting a bit of help

Hi R Haworth. This is MichaelMcAnnis in YumaAZ. Anyway I had no info on my User: Mmcannis page (it was a name in red), so I was sent a note there and tried to move it. I created a Mmcannis2 and Mmcannis3 and a ["User talk2: Mmcannis."] What is still on my User Talk page is the entire history, minus this latest note sent to me. I was trying to add it to the talk page and messed up, and was hoping to leave my User page still undeveloped(and in red).

I don't hardly know anything about redirects, except the little bunch I just created. I have done a few "move" commands(just article title misspelling, or etc). but they have been rare. Could you assist me? --MichaelMcA--Mmcannis 22:58, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

  • I have tidied things up for you. (I note you have been guilty twice of posting to a user page instead of a user_talk page!) But:
  • why not create a user page for yourself - it is more friendly and suggests that you are not a newbie
  • could you specify which image it was that you rated 1 of 10 in your note to 3dnatureguy - and then check who uploaded it.
Anyway nice to see that you are still around. -- RHaworth 07:36, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

Lightbulbs

I am confused why you moved my sandbox page about lightbulbs are you going to move the rest?evrik 16:39, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Yes. The names begin with Evrik/Sandbox/ so they belong in the user: namespace not in (Main). I have left Jokebook:Lightbulb:Occupational because it is not an obvious user: page but if it gets nominated for deletion or moved, don't blame me. Wikipedia is not a jokebook. -- RHaworth 16:46, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
    • Please elucidate me, what's the difference between Evrik/Sandbox and User talk:Evrik/Sandbox? Should the rest of the pages be moved?evrik 16:49, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
  • Evrik/Sandbox would be in the (Main) namespace, ie. where the actual Wikipedia articles live and that title is not allowed - it is not a Wikipedia article. User:Evrik/Sandbox or User:Evrik/sandbox (note the case sensitivity - they are different pages) is in the proper place: the User: namespace - you are allowed, indeed encouraged to have such a page. User talk:Evrik/Sandbox should be a notional page where other users could discuss what you are putting in your sandbox (but you are "mis-using" yours). It is notional because a) by convention you are allowed to do what you like in your sandbox and b) if someone saw edits there and felt really strongly, it would be better to comment at user talk:Evrik to centralise the discussion.
Just for tidiness, I have moved User talk:Evrik/Sandbox/lightbulb to User:Evrik/Sandbox/lightbulb but that was unnecessary - how you organise your user pages is really up to you. -- RHaworth 17:06, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

subst

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

Station naming

I don't think humouring him is going to do any good. He's already threatened to move Birmingham New Street railway station to Birmingham New Street Station in direct contravention to the ongoing naming convention discussion (which I encourage you to contribute to if you havne't already) and the very recent consensus to move it to its current location on the talk page. While X railway station isn't the official name, it has been agreed by plenty of people in plenty of places (but unfortunately not in one single official place) that it is a good naming scheme and avoids ambiguity. X (former name) Station is the worst imho as it has unnecessary capitalisation (against the MoS) and makes it difficult for people to find it. I've accepted (for now) "Leeds City" (now just "Leeds") and "Sheffield Midland" (now just Sheffield). What really needs to happen though is a consensus for one scheme at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (UK stations) - you can help by encouraging people to comment there for whichever is their preferred scheme (or lack of scheme, but that truly is the worst of all worlds imho, as I've explained there). Thryduulf 09:44, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps Thryduulf would like to avoid sarcastic comments, him has a name after all. I am not threatening to move Birmingham New Street, I am warning that I will move the article to its official name which is and always has been Birmingham New Street Station as it is clearly labelled on its front. Capitalisation may go against the MoS but simply is the name of the station so does not go against the MoS. What really needs to happen is for you two kind contributors to avoid using an arbitrary naming scheme and start naming station articles using their actual names as obsorved on signs around and on the buildings. Your naming convention project is a farce and has no logic behind it other than your own. Regards, Captain scarlet 12:47, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
PS: Not only is X Station the appropriate naming but it avoids having to: [[X railway station|X Station]] and instead [[X Station]]. Regards, Captain scarlet 12:51, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
