Konzerthaus Freiburg[edit]
Neben der politischen Auseinandersetzung wurden allerdings vor allem die akustischen Gegebenheiten im großen Saal bemängelt. Neben den Mitgliedern des SWR Sinfonieorchesters, die mit 150 Probentagen im Jahr die häufigsten Mieter sind, beklagten sich auch die Berliner Philharmoniker bei ihrem ersten Gastauftritt über erschwerte Bedingungen.[6] So konnten sich die Musiker untereinander nur schwer hören, da der Schall in den 14 m hohen Raum über der Bühne entweicht. Auch bei leerem Saal, wie es bei CD-Produktionen häufig der Fall ist, war die Akustik nur schwer beherrschbar. Solche Probleme sind in großen Konzertsälen kurz nach der Eröffnung allerdings keine Seltenheit und so wurden 2001, nach zweijähriger Testphase, 30 kreisrunde Schallsegel eingebaut, die in der Höhe verstellbar an der Decke über dem Bühnenraum angebracht sind. Zusammen mit den zwölf beweglichen Paravents ergaben sich daraus weitere Investitionen in Höhe von 800.000 DM für die FWT. Dennoch halten einige Kritiker weitere Maßnahmen für notwendig, um beispielsweise mit der hohen Qualität im Festspielhaus Baden-Baden konkurrieren zu können.
Apart from the political dispute, the acoustic situation in the big hall was predominantly criticized. Not only the members of the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, who are frequent tenants with 150 rehearsals per year, but also the Berlin Philharmonic, during their first guest appearance, complained about poor conditions. They highlighted that the musicians could not hear each other very well, because the sound escaped into the 14m high room above the stage. Even when the hall was empty, as it is often the case during CD productions, the acoustics was only hard to control. These kind of problems are not uncommon in big concert halls shortly after their opening. For that reason, in 2001, after a testing phase of two years, 30 circular acoustic canvases, which can be adjusted in height, were installed at the ceiling above the stage area. Together with twelve mobile folding screens, the investment increased by 800,000 DM (roughly 409,000 EUR) for the Freiburg Management and Marketing association. Nevertheless, a few critics deem further measures necessary, in order to, for example, compete with the high quality in the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.
Entwicklung und Veränderungen seit der Eröffnung[edit]
Am 28. Juni 1996 wurde das Konzerthaus feierlich eröffnet und dem Betreiber, der Freiburger Wirtschaft und Touristik GmbH (FWT) übergeben. In den folgenden Jahren etablierte es sich als einer der repräsentativsten Austragungsorte für kulturelle Veranstaltungen und Tagungen und konnte bis 2001 eine kontinuierliche Auslastung von 86 % und etwa eine Million Besucher verbuchen. Daneben sorgten jedoch auch die endgültigen Baukosten von 148,1 Mio. DM (12. Mai 1998) und ein Defizit um die 4 Mio. DM jährlich für Gesprächsstoff bis hinein in den Wahlkampf zur Bürgermeisterwahl 1998.[1]

Development and Modifications since its Opening[edit]
On 28 June 1996, the concert hall was opened ceremoniously and handed over to the operator, the Freiburg Management and Marketing association. In the following years, it established itself as one of the most representative venues for cultural events and conventions. Until 2001, a continuous occupancy rate of 86% and around one million visitors were brought to book. Apart from that, however, the final building cost of 148,1 million DM (12 May 1998, roughly 76 million EUR) and a deficit of around 4 million DM per year (roughly 2 million EUR) caused a stir, which was also topic in the mayoral election campaign in 1998.

Grünanlagen in Freiburg[edit]
Möslepark mit Waldsee[edit]
Entstanden 1879 bis 1885 als Landschaftspark nach Plänen des Stadtgärtners Maximilian Wilhelm Schmöger[4], gehört der Möslepark zu den ältesten Anlagen Freiburgs. 1877 wurden zunächst südlich der Bahnlinie zwei Weiher für die Brauerei Neumeyer[5] zur Eisgewinnung angelegt. (Ein früheres Gaststättengebäude dieser Brauerei ist heute noch am Schwabentorring Ecke Kartäuserstraße zu sehen.) Der 1873 gegründete Verein zur Verschönerung der Stadt regte kurz darauf die Schaffung des Parks an. Seinen Namen verdankt er dem Wasserreichtum. Die ältesten Quellfassungen der Stadt sind hier zu finden. 1881 wurde ein dritter Weiher angelegt, der heute, verschmolzen mit den beiden ersten, den Waldsee bildet. Am Westufer befindet sich das Waldseerestaurant mit Seeterrasse, welches 1883[6] eröffnet wurde und heute noch als Ausflugsgaststätte und Veranstaltungsstätte bei der Freiburger Bevölkerung großen Zuspruch erfährt. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wurde der stark verwilderte elf Hektar große Park durchforstet und geringfügig umgestaltet. 2015 wurde der westliche, und 2016[needs update] soll der östliche Teil ausgelichtet werden, um den früheren Wechsel von dichten und lichten Zonen wiederherzustellen.[4]
Auf dem Waldsee wird im Sommer Boot gefahren und im Winter Schlittschuh gelaufen. Südlich der Waldseestraße befindet sich seit 1960 eine Jugendverkehrsschule. Die Waldseestraße wurde schon im Jahr 1956 wegen Krötenwanderungen für den Verkehr gesperrt. Seit Mitte der 70er Jahre werden regelmäßig Krötenschutzzäune errichtet. Von 1973 bis 1990 fand im Möslepark jährlich ein Flohmarkt statt. Aus Naturschutzgründen wird er dort nicht mehr abgehalten.[7]
Im Möslepark finden sich bis zu 200 Jahre alte Eichen, Hainbuchen und mächtige Rhododendren. Er ist ein wichtiger Lebensraum für Fledermäuse wie den Großen Abendsegler. Der Park ist Teil des Landschaftsschutzgebietes Lorettoberg-Günterstal-Littenweiler.[8]

Möslepark with Waldsee
The Möslepark, created as a landscape park between 1879 and 1885 under the plans of urban gardener Maximilian Wilhelm Schmöger, is one of the oldest parks in Freiburg. Initially, in 1877, two artificial ponds had been created south of the train tracks for the collection of ice by the brewery Neumeyer. (A former public house of the brewery can still be seen at the corner of the Schwabentorring and the Kartäuserstraße today.) The Society for Urban Beautification (Verein zur Verschönerung der Stadt), founded in 1873, suggested the creation of the park shortly afterwards. The park owes its name to its abundance of water. The oldest tappings of the city spring can be found here. In 1881, a third pond was created, which merged with the first two, and created the Waldsee as we know it today. The Waldseerestaurant, founded in 1883, features a terrace next to the lake, which is situated on the western bank. It is still a very popular vacation restaurant, as well as a place for local events. After the First World War, the extremely unkempt, eleven-hectare big park, was thinned out and slightly remodeled. In 2015, the western part was pruned, and in 2016 the eastern part will be as well, in order to restore the former variation of thick and light areas. In the summer the Waldsee is used for boating, and in the winter it is used for skating. Since 1960, a so-called Jugendverkehrsschule, an institution for children and young adults to learn about traffic, has been located south of the Waldseestraße. Since 1956, the Waldseestraße has been closed to traffic due to toad migration. Starting in the mid-1970s, protective fences for the toads have been regularly built. From 1973 to 1990, a yearly flea market took place in Möslepark. However, in order to preserve the nature it does not do so anymore.
In the Möslepark up to 200 year old oak trees, hornbeams and big rhododendrons can be found. It is an important habitat for bats, such as the noctule. The park is part of the nature preserve Lorettoberg-Günterstal-Littenweiler.

- Seit 1872 wird der Alte Friedhof im Freiburger Stadtteil Neuburg als Park genutzt. Seinen Friedhofcharakter hat das Natur- und Kulturdenkmal jedoch nicht eingebüßt.[9]

Notes on my Translations[edit]
I found it difficult to translate filler words (e.g. “so”) or fixed phrases (e.g. “Schall entweicht”). Furthermore, long sentences in German, which are uncommon in English, had to be shortened.
It was difficult to explain the term "Friedhofcharacter" for the translation on "Grünanlagen in Freiburg."
