Thanks for your update. Do you have the Szarota book Straty Osobowe? My Polish is limited at this point and can only pick out the basic facts from the tables. Straty Osobowe seems like an excellant resource for Wikipedia if only I could read it. The Untold Battle of Britain

Focused on Polish Squadron 303, was shown in UK on Channel 4, May 14th. A clear, factual account, with statistics. Good brief excerpts of interviews with Polish veterans, actors only doing dramatization to assist narrative. It ends matter of factly with the Betrayal and the 1946 humiliation of the London VE ceremony. It offers the case that the 1940 Battle of Britain saved the nation from invasion, that it was close, and that it may not have been won without the Poles, who were by far the best units. I've recently visited St Clement Danes in London, photographed the Polish air corps memorial there, as shown on "Polish Air Forces in France and Great Britain" Wiki site.Alethe (talk) 21:03, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 May newsletter

We're half way through round 3 of the 2011 WikiCup. There are currently 32 remaining in the competition, but only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Scotland Casliber (submissions), of pool D, is our overall leader with nearly 200 points, while pools A, B and C are led by Texas Racepacket (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) and Saskatchewan Canada Hky (submissions) respectively. The score required to reach the next round is 35, though this will no doubt go up significantly as the round progresses. We have a good number of high scorers, but also a considerable number who are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. Also, an important note concerning nominations at featured article candidates: if you are nominating content for which you intend to claim WikiCup points, please make this clear in the nomination statement so that the FAC director and his delegates are aware of the fact.

A running total of claims can be seen here. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. I appreciate the additional feedback on the history section -- I'll see to it that the distinction and connection between social media and social web are made more apparent. I capitalized social media because the author of one of the references does so, but I'll fix that as well. However, at the moment our group is facing a bit of a problem: it seems our article has been put up for some sort of review (potentially deletion?!) and we cannot edit it at the moment. I'm not sure how to proceed at this point; do you think this is short term or are we effectively locked out of the article for what looks to be like a long period of time? --Rsoruss (talk) 00:47, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
Ah, I see the mistake I made -- It's interesting to note what an effect one letter can have! Thank you for your comment. It was the least I could do for him. I've read some of his works and I think that he was a great linguist. I'll try to make it DYK, as soon as I find other materials on him. I think that the catch for DYK could be: Do you know that ..........."The description of Dushmani dialect made by Polish linguist Cimochowski, was the first full description of the non-literary types of the Albanian language...". Biographies

Would you look at the DYK nomination again. OCNative directs me to remove the biographies from the article, which would make it impossible to tell the story of the aid to Solidarity---the hook.

(It would also destroy the context of several generations of political activists who worked together on civil rights and human rights (anti-communism), and who today are vilified on the Internet by conspiracy weirdos of the left and right.)

Polish food item discussed at Wiknic

Nice to meet you at the Wiknic. I will definitely be attending more of these events.

The English labeling on my puzling food is "Red Beets with Garlic." There is Polish that says "Buraczki z Czosnkiem." The ingredients are red beets, garlic, caraway, sugar, vinegar, and salt. It is in a small 200 gram jar. I hope to learn how people in Poland eat this item. Googling it gets lots of articles in Polish.

I read the article on Polish culture during World War II. Very interesting. While researching Red Beets with Garlic, I remember seeing that Polish cooking changed greatly during and after WWII, mostly because many traditional ingredients were not available. Beets

Mine are very much like Ćwikła. They have no horseradish, so are probably milder in taste. Right now, their taste is overwhelmed by stronger tastes such as those of meats. Also mine are ground much finer than Ćwikła seems to be.

Joining Wikipedia Trains Project

Hello, Piotrus (you sent me a 'Welcome' message when I contributed a few edits to Wikipedia articles - probably due to some References I added to the article on 'Neighbors' concerning Jedwabne. But most of my edits are on RAILWAYS articles)

--- I have considered joining the Wikipedia Trains Project, and contributing Assessments of Importance (especially) and of Quality. (I find the present 'Importance' assessments to be absolutely HAYWIRE, in a number of cases (Important subjects receive low rankings, low-importance trivialities appear in hordes). And 'Quality' assessments leave much to be desired).

HOWEVER, I FIND THE INSTRUCTIONS TO BE IMPENETRABLE. I just tried to add my name to the 'Participants' list for the Trains Project, where each Participant's line starts with a computerized identification - I COULDN'T FIND ANY WAY TO JOIN, NO WAY TO ADD MY IDENTITY.

(NOTE: I USE A COMPUTER A LOT, BUT I HAVE A TALENT FOR FINDING/CREATING GLITCHES IN SOFTWARE. SOFTWARE AND I HAVE A VERY UNEASY COEXISTENCE !!!!)

SECOND: The 'Assessments' page for the Trains Project gives a good explanation of what the basis for Quality and Importance Assessments should be, but instructions on how to SUBMIT such Assessments are TOTALLY IMPENETRABLE - there's something about the 'Wikipedia Trains Project Banner' - I FIND THE INSTRUCTIONS IMPOSSIBLE TO FOLLOW !!!

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

ESSENTIALLY, I AM A NON-FLUENT USER OF COMPUTERESE - ALLERGIC TO COMPUTER-ORIENTED ENGLISH. (In the 'PREVIEW' the Wikipedia software has divided my writing into different formats - I NEVER ASKED IT TO DO THIS! HELP !!)

(My general background: I have experience in New York government on matters relating to the largest rail operator in North America, the New York MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority - it's several times the size of Amtrak). I worked at the policy level. However, my rail interests are much broader - I follow European rail closely, I read French and German in addition to English, and at this moment I am especially interested in China, where rail transport is developing at a rate which dwarfs what is happening in the rest of the world).

If I am to contribute to 'Assessments' in the Trains Project (is this actually important, or not?) I WILL NEED HELP with the computer-related side.

WikiCup 2011 June newsletter

We are half way through 2011, and entering the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; the semi-finals are upon us! Points scored in the interim (29/30 June) may be counted towards next round, but please do not update your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. 16 contestants remain, and all have shown dedication to the project to reach this far. Our round leader was Scotland Casliber (submissions) who, among other things, successfully passed three articles through featured article candidates and claimed an impressive 29 articles at Did You Know, scoring 555 points. Casliber led pool D. Pool A was led by Ohio Wizardman (submissions), claiming points for a featured article, a featured list and seven good article reviews, while pool C was led by Norway Eisfbnore (submissions), who claimed for two good articles, ten articles at Did You Know and four good article reviews. They scored 154 and 118 respectively. Pool B was by far our most competitive pool; six of the eight competitors made it through to round 4, with all of them scoring over 100 points. The pool was led by Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), who claimed for, among other things, three featured articles and five good articles. In addition to the four pool leaders, 12 others (the four second places, and the 8 next highest overall) make up our final 16. The lowest scorer who reached round 4 scored 76 points; a significant increase on the 41 needed to reach round 3. Eight of our semi-finalists scored at least twice as much as this.

No points were awarded this round for featured pictures, good topics or In the News, and no points have been awarded in the whole competition for featured topics, featured portals or featured sounds. Instead, the highest percentage of points has come from good articles. Featured articles, despite their high point cost, are low in number, and so, overall, share a comparable number of points with Did You Know, which are high in number but low in cost. A comparatively small but still considerable number of points come from featured lists and good article reviews, rounding out this round's overall scores.

We would again like to thank United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) and Bavaria Stone (submissions) for invaluable background work, as well as all of those helping to provide reviews for the articles listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. Memorial article

Regarding my lack of a DYK nomination for Janusz Kusociński Memorial – from hook creation, to nomination and article reviewing, the new DYK rules mean that a nomination typically takes me around 40 minutes. This is a significant portion of the time I spend working here. In response to this, I now only nominate particularly interesting pieces (Ondoro Osoro for example). Thanks for your note, and this clearly does have a lot of potential. I began with a broad translation of the early sections of the German language WP article then started to create links from other articles. I guess the next stage will be a chronology and adding citations. I haven't yet found any good English-language specific sources, but there should be useful material in general histories – the early volumes of the Cambridge Modern History spring to mind, of which the first series is all online here. The Polish article on economist Bert Hoselitz is good but its photo was of a different person, John Nash (whom Hoselitz influenced) so I removed the reference to this photo and requested deletion of the photo from Commons. Hej. W plWiki pojawiła się prośba o przetłumaczenie tego hasła. Problem w tym, że poszukałam trochę w necie i nie ma żadnych wzmianek o tym, by Józef Serczuk był dowódcą partyzanckiego oddziału żydowskiego czy kimś podobnym (a tu np. wielu biorących udział w takim czy innym ruchu oporu jest wymienianych). Jedyna wzmianka, jaka się pojawia, to taka, że Józef i Dawid Serczukowie byli wśród uciekinierów z Sobiboru [5], [6], pierwszy link sugeruje ponadto, że prawdopodobnie zostali zabici przez jakichś bandytów (nie wnikając w ew. przynależność organizacyjną tychże bandytów). Hasło nie ma źródeł, imię i nazwisko nie gugluje się poza Wikipedią w kontekście "holocaust", "resistance" czy "Nuremberg Trials", nie ma nic w Google Books. Dziwne to bardzo... Some Thoughts

Piotr, I didn't know where else to take this so I decided to bring it to your attention, as you're the only seemingly unbiased wiki admin I can find. RE: Deletion of Lawyers in Hell and the subsequent merging of other novels: I am of the opinion that the only solution is well written pages with links to all the named writers and synopses of the books and stories as well as commentaries and reviews. However, it seems that the Lawyers in Hell was unfairly targeted for speedy deletion while others with similar pages across wiki have stayed up for upwards of five years. Other than the discussion for AfD, which seemed to reach no consensus (and then all of the pages were merged when I was on vacation), is there a way where a mutual consensus could be reached without contributors and admins grabbing for their nearest hammers to beat each other with? Ambassador Program: assessment drive

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

We are half way through the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; there is less than a month to go before we have our final 8. Our pool leaders are New Zealand Adabow (submissions) (Pool A, 189 points) and Russia PresN (submissions) (Pool B, 165 points). The number of points required to reach the next round is not clear at this time; there are some users who still do not have any recorded points. Please remember to update your submissions' pages promptly. In addition, congratulations to PresN, who scored the first featured topic points in the competition for his work on Thatgamecompany related articles. Most points this round generally have, so far, come from good articles, with only one featured article (White-bellied Sea Eagle, from Scotland Casliber (submissions)) and two featured lists (Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story, from PresN and Grammy Award for Best Native American Music Album, from Another Believer (submissions)). Points for Did You Know and good article reviews round out the scoring. No points have been awarded for In the News, good topics or featured pictures this round, and no points for featured sounds or portals have been awarded in the entire competition. On an unrelated note, preparation will be beginning soon for next year's WikiCup- watch this space!

There is little else to be said beyond the usual. Please list anything you need reviewing on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, so others following the WikiCup can help, and please do help if you can by providing reviews for the articles listed there. Polish-Soviet War

hello, there was an author disambig problem in the above article and in fixing it I noticed you made this edit in 2006 [7] which stated that the author in question was Parker. But if you follow the google link in the article the author appears to be Mearsheimer. The book doesn't appear to be a collection of essays by different authors so there appears to have been a mistake and i've corrected it. "Teaching with Wikipedia Workshop at CMU" announcements

I see that you cross-posted a promotion of the "Teaching with Wikipedia Workshop at CMU" event to the talk pages of somewhere around 15 to 20 university articles. While I admire your motives—I mean, I've managed class wiki projects in the past myself—I really don't think that was an appropriate use of article talk pages, especially for the talk pages of relatively distant universities like Grove City. Announcements like the one you made are probably best left in the User Talk space or on WikiProject pages, I think. I originally reverted the announcements on Pitt's and CMU's talk pages because I watch those articles, but I then realized you'd posted the announcement much more widely than I thought. I decided to restore the announcements to Pitt's and CMU's talk pages, then leave you a note, since I don't intend to behave belligerently—mass-reverting another editor's changes to 15+ pages isn't in my nature :). Greetings! I have not completed the article about the clan, I would rather think that it give true picture although the article is very long. But then, its all there. Think that the article might be concidered now as GA article, I would still need som help with language, style and possible errors. Also, the the reference list could be sorted in better way, don't know if it is necessary (naming the references so it does not repeat but refer to style like a,b,c,d....

Hello! I went through the article again and come up with following. All references should have a page number (this will take months to do) and also, the article contains partly the history of Poland which some editors does not like and tell that to make it to GA, I should remove this part and leave only the info about Ostoja. My feeling is that historical explanations are important to understand the article in better way and if it is required to remove this part, I would rather leave the article on B-class. Re [8] I totally understand where you're coming from and that annoyed me as well. But this is a perspective of someone who's doing good in a crowd that's doing bad - in other words, they really DO NEED to do something to get copyright violations of the main page. And if you go back and look through DYK features it's actually mindblowing of how much copy/paste articles get checked off (strangely, almost every single one of MY DYK noms has been given a hard time for comparatively trivial stuff). Now, of course, this being Wikipedia, they're totally "fixing" a problem by creating other problems. To misquote Kisiel [9] "Wikipedia bohatersko zwalcza problemy nieznane w innych ustrojach!". Battle of Kock (1944)

Just an FYI, I had to decline the proposed deletion of this article. There was clearly an argument to keep the article on the discussion page (they even put keep in bold text like an AfD !vote) so deletion would be controversial. Online Ambassadors: Time to join pods

Hello! If you're planning to be an active Online Ambassador for the upcoming academic term, now is the time to join one or more pods. (A pod consists of the instructor, the Campus Ambassadors, and the Online Ambassadors for single class.) The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) explains the expectations for being part of a pod as an Online Ambassador. (The MOU for pods in Canada is essentially the same.) In short, the role of Online Ambassadors this term consists of:

  • Working closely with the instructor and Campus Ambassadors, providing advice and perspective as an experienced Wikipedian
  • Helping students who ask for it (or helping them to find the help they need)
  • Watching out for the class as a whole
  • Helping students to get community feedback on their work

This replaces the 1-on-1 mentoring role for Online Ambassadors that we had in previous terms; rather than being responsible for individual students (some of whom don't want or help or are unresponsive), Online Ambassadors will be there to help whichever students in their class(es) ask for help.

You can browse the upcoming courses here: United States; Canada. More are being added as new pods become active and create their course pages.

Once you've found a class that you want to work with—especially if you some interest or expertise in the topic area—you should sign the MOU listing for that class and get in touch with the instructor. We're hoping to have at least two Online Ambassadors per pod, and more for the larger classes.

If you're up for supporting any kind of class and would like me to assign you to a pod in need of more Online Ambassadors, just let me know.

Proposed Deletion: Polish Saint Patrick's Day

Dear Sir:

I am hopeful that Wikipedia will not remove this page.

For the last seven years, there is a group of family and friends that has celebrated this day and have created holiday. My cousins and myself all are very proud of our Polish heritage, and it has been a joy to watch something grow from idea to 50 people gathering in celebration. We were hoping to create a little buzz for next year's event. This year we hope to have over 100 people there, and hopefully raise some money for local veterans.

This day is not a Hoax althoug the origins of the holiday are pure fiction, created as a back story to the holiday, to have some fun.

The second section is 90% truth with the section about the Leprechaun(films) are sadly the absolute truth.

Please let me know what we can do to not have this deleted. It important that to a number of people keep Polish St. Patrick's Day on Wikipedia.

WikiCup 2011 July newsletter

The finals are upon us; we're down to the last few. One of the eight remaining contestants will be this year's WikiCup champion! 150 was the score needed to progress to the final; just under double the 76 required to reach round 4, and more than triple the 41 required to reach round 3. Our eight finalists are:

  • Scotland Casliber (submissions), Pool A's winner. Casliber has the highest total score in the competition, with 1528, the bulk of which is made up of 8 featured articles. He has the highest number of total featured articles (8, 1 of which was eligible for double points) and total did you knows (72) of any finalist. Casliber writes mostly on biology, including ornithology, botany and mycology.
  • Russia PresN (submissions), Pool B's winner and the highest scorer this round. PresN is the only finalist who has scored featured topic points, and he has gathered an impressive 330, but most of his points come from his 4 featured articles, one of which scored double. PresN writes mostly on video games and the Hugo Awards.
  • Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), Pool A's runner-up. Hurricanehink's points are mostly from his 30 good articles, more than any other finalist, and he is also the only finalist to score good topic points. Hurricanehink, as his name suggests, writes mostly on meteorology.
  • Ohio Wizardman (submissions), Pool B's runner-up. Wizardman has completed 86 good article reviews, more than any other finalist, but most of his points come from his 2 featured articles. Wizardman writes mostly on American sport, especially baseball.
  • Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), the "fastest loser" (Pool A). Miyagawa has written 3 featured lists, one of which was awarded double points, more than any other finalist, but he was awarded points mostly for his 68 did you knows. Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, including dogs, military history and sport.
  • Canada Resolute (submissions), the second "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Resolute's points come from his 9 good articles. He writes mostly on Canadian topics, including ice hockey.
  • Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool A). Most of Evan's points come from his 10 good articles, and he writes mostly on meteorology.
  • Australia Sp33dyphil (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Phil's points come from his 9 good articles, 4 of which (more than any other finalist) were eligible for double points. He writes mostly on aeronautics.

We say goodbye to our seven other semi-finalists, Another Believer (submissions), Poland Piotrus (submissions), United Kingdom Grandiose (submissions), Bavaria Stone (submissions), Norway Eisfbnore (submissions), Saskatchewan Canada Hky (submissions) and Wisconsin MuZemike (submissions). Everyone still in the competition at this stage has done fantastically well, and contributed greatly to Wikipedia. We're on the home straight now, and we will know our winner in two months.

In other news, preparations for next year's competition have begun with a brainstorming thread. Please, feel free to drop by and share any thoughts you have about how the competition should work next year. Sign ups are not yet open, but will be opened in due course. Watch this space. Further, there has been a discussion about the rule whereby those in the WikiCup must delcare their participation when nominating articles at featured article candidates. This has resulted in a bot being created by new featured article delegate Ucucha (talk · contribs). The bot will leave a message on FAC pages if the nominator is a participant in the WikiCup.

A reminder of the rules: any points scored after August 29 may be claimed for the final round, and please remember to update submission pages promptly. The second assertion is the correct one. The 126th was on the eastern front. You may find this link useful. Also, the map facing page 624 of Volume 7 of Das Deutsche Reich und der Zweite Weltkrieg confirms the 2., 26., and PzLehr facing the U.S. 28th Division. The German author for this section of the work is Detlef Vogel. The book was printed by Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt in 2001. ISBN is 3-421-05507-6.

The image [11] is also useful. This map is a good one and free to use because it is a U.S. military work.

I went over the references for Bob Beckwith and as I stated at Template:Did you know nominations/Bob Beckwith I went over the references again, made some minor changes as to positioning of refs, and I am pretty sure text is 100% supported by any citations that directly follow it. Could you look over it again, and if there are any specific things that concern you I would appreciate knowing... I provided a source for the hook (its the Yahoo News source in the article). Also, some groups of sentences have the citation at the end of them (i.e. I didn't put the same cite at the end of each sentence, just at the end of a group of sentences directly supported by the citation). Yeah, I just tested it and this is how to make it work: just edit the subpage template and change "{{DYKsubpage" to "{{subst:DYKsubpage" in the first line at the very top of the edit box, and then it will show up as promoted by you. Karl Wahlen - Shortening

I had shortened them because I had seen on the top of most of the episode pages, "Its plot summary may be too long or excessively detailed."

I looked through the history and saw that nothing had really been done to shorten the synopsis at all or condense it to be a bit more concise. I'll bug you in class over it tomorrow (or today rather), and I'll read over those articles you linked to me before class hopefully.

Question on Edits

If the inline references we used were websites and encyclopedias do we still have to put an author, etc.? I was trying to go over my edits to see if I could put anything there but since they are websites finding authors and all of that other information might be harder or nonexistent.

Hi Piotr,

Thank you so much for your help, I feel like I'm slowly starting to understand what I'm supposed to be doing. For assignment 2, I went back and added inline references to the Aloha article. I can't wait to continue doing more work on Wikipedia, and am actually thinking of starting a sandbox for one of the organizations I am.

assignment 2

Hi Piotrus,

I have cited an article for a website that previously did not have any references, as well as slightly edited the article. Also, I believe my group (Group 9) is caught up to date with this wiki assignment thus far? This whole wikipedia this is still quite new and confusing for me.

Extra Credit

Hi Professor Piotrus, I was just looking at my wiki grades & I was wondering if you saw all the extra credit I have completed? I have created a Wikipedia account and made at least one constructive edit to Wikipedia before the assignment was introduced, post a diff of my edit to the instructor's Wikipedia talk page, correctly used a citation template, added more than 5 citations, and have commented on an articles talk page about possible more references to add more information on the topic. On Monday I stayed after w/ Natalie Fisher and we worked on the "to-do" list. Natalie Fisher is the one that added the "to-do" list. However, I added resources, and added what I will be researching.
