Hashim Abdul Halim, Biman Banerjee, Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly[edit]

(edit nomination page)

Created by Avenue X at Cicero (talk), Avenue X at Cicero (talk), Avenue X at Cicero (talk). Self nom at 12:45, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Halim: Too short by roughly 80 characters, only cited to his official biography and maps of India. Citations are quite frankly almost bare, and you need more in-text citations. No images, so no copyright issues with images. No paraphrasing issues.
Banerjee:Barely long enough; I'd prefer some expansion. Needs wikification. References are almost bare. Paraphrasing is too close.
Speaker: Long enough, new enough. There are numerous unreferenced paragraphs and this shows major copy and paste action.
Articles need too much work to reach the main page. Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:13, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
ALT 1: How 'bout ALT 2?
ALT 2: ... that Hashim Abdul Halim served West Bengal as the Speaker of the House for 29 years before being replaced by Biman Banerjee in 2011?
Hashim Abdul Halim:  Fixed
Biman Banerjee: No problems noticed. Things like "leader of the opposition suryakanta mishra," "after the election was over", "after biman banerjee was elected," etc., WILL be duplicated. Also, I think "barely long enough" is still long enough.
Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly: As above. Most of the part that was "duplicated" was the functions of the Speaker, they are provided by the Constitution of India, and the powers/functions of the Lok Sabha Speaker and Vidhan Sabha Speaker are same, so there will a duplication.

  • Alt2 is fine.
Banerjee article:"without hindrance as the left front did not put up a candidate for the post"
Source: "without hindrance as the left front did not put up a candidate for the post"
That can be rephrased. "After the election was over" could also be rephrase, such as "after the election" (without the "was over").
As for the text from the constitution, perhaps it would be better for our purposes with a bit of rewriting; per DYK Rule 1, text should be original to Wikipedia. Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:14, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

  • Halim: References are still rather bare.
Banerjee: You've fixed one instance. You still have quite a few more. References are still rather bare.
Speaker: What has been fixed? I still see lots of wording not original to Wikipedia. Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:43, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
Also, the current speaker is male so it should be he, not she. Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:45, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
Where is it either she or her? Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 08:09, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I read the diff wrong. Still needs work as I outlined though. Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:36, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

  • "mishra prabodh chandra sinha and subhash nashkar took him to the speaker's chair" from Banerjee, same as the source. This could easily be rewritten. The one right below it in the link above should as well.
BTW, is the Legislative's Assembly's work considered PD in India? If it isn't we have more than just a paraphrasing issue. Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:39, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
I fixed the first one, and think Halim and Banerjee are good to go. Regarding the duplicates at the Speaker article, I believe that the number of duplicates is huge because it is one of the single largets article with around 10,000 characters at DYK, and, the duplicates are close together, such as examples stated above. As far as the work is concerned, I think it is PD as there is no original authorship. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 04:12, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
Turning a point list into prose is enough creative input (IMHO) that it could qualify. I will check out India's PD laws. Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:17, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
  • Per this, you have a lot of work to do. Government works are still copyrighted. Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:34, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Assuming your last statement meant that the hook will be passed if it passes copyright, I can assert that it will, as the Constitution of India, which originally determined the roles, was published in 1949. Thus, this Indian work is in the public domain in India because its copyright has expired. This governmental work, was published more than 60 years ago (that is before January 1, 1964). For more info, click here and check out Template:PD-India. Avenue X at Cicero (talk) 04:38, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
As I noted above, the constitution is in a list form. This has creative input from the person who made the site; as such, it is a derivative work which could still be under copyright. I have tagged it for investigation. Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:43, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
