Re: Russian-Circassian War[edit]

It's probably good enough for B-Class. A higher-level (A or FA) review may go back to the questions of (a) how reputable a source he is and (b) whether there are additional sources; so I'd suggest undertaking a more thorough literature survey on the topic before nominating the article to those. Kirill Lokshin 21:12, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Yup, seems to qualify, based on my reading. (If you manage to find an editor with a deeper knowledge of the topic, they may be able to comment more meaningfully on the historical details.) Kirill Lokshin 21:21, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

About Viral Tagging[edit]

That clears things up quite a bit. I suppose what I'm "researching" is sort of new. Most of the sites I see using "Tags" like slashdot, are still either in beta, or not using the full potential of tags(as I see it). I guess few people have thought about viral tagging, which would be something like "record every bit of relevent information". In my database class, they always talked about effeceint data storage, not meaningful data storage. I want to see wikipedia, and wiki's in general adopt a form of tagging. I think that would be the key to solving.. a few.. problems in the world. I've pretty much finished the technical part of my "research". It is the kind that is based on observing the world and drawing conclusions. And I could reference lots of other wikipedia articles that my current thoughts are based on. And those articles should be backed up by "experts" or "facts" if they are included in wikipedia correct? If I clean it up in terms of "proof" then do I still need to be "published" or is it sufficient to have the "original" "document" in cyberspace(aka my website). Sorry for all the quotation, its just semantics really get me confused. Thanks for responding on my user talk/discussion page. Wubitog 07:10, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

How do I indent like I see above this post? Is there a newbie guide for wikipedia somewhere? At any rate, I actually agree that the encyclopedia aspect of wikipedia should be no-point-of-view, listing facts even if they are facts about theory. I am no longer really pursuing adding viral tagging to wikipedia myself. If it is important enough, someone will add it for me. Hopefully a good wikipedian rather than an excited newbie like myself. I do think there should be a section attached to wikipedia for research however. That is sort of what happens on discussion pages it would seem, but it would be nice to create a new term for a new idea so you had a single place to put that kind of thing. I'll look more into this village pump thing once I've learned how to use wikipedia (ie formatting of text and functions available). Wubitog 06:22, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for adopting me, I'm getting a little more familiar with how to edit pages. I suppose, more than editing wikipedia articles, I am interested in learning how to use a wiki in general. I'm also interested in an optional tagging system for wikipedia, which if the idea is rejected, I would want to at least attempt to write my own version of the ?wikimedia? software to test out my theories. I have about a week of free time (as my work computer is broken, and going back to Dell for repairs) to learn how to use wikipedia, make my suggestion at the village pump and get feedback, and if the idea gets rejected, learn how to write my own wiki based on the software available. (Once I get my computer back I'm basically going to be sleeping, eating, and working to make up for lost time.) Before I pummel you with questions, I'm going to read over the help again. Wubitog 08:25, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Adoption[edit]

I read over a bunch of stuff and started getting into the help section. I put up an adoptme um? function? on my user page. (I think). Now I just need to figure out how to accept someone. I would prefer you because you know where I'm coming from more than any one else here. You have also been very helpful. Wubitog 09:34, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Its going ok. I've been a little busy with other things, but I did make my proposal at the village pump. No responses yet. Maybe I wasn't clear enough? Or maybe I didn't give good reasons for why I think it is important? I was just going to wait a while longer to see if anyone wanted to comment on the idea. Plus I'm still working the idea of a complete tagging system out in my head. Amazon.com is the best example I've seen, but even they don't have much of a searching system, and nothing denotes whether a tag is meant to be a positive or negative reflection on the item in question. Right now I'm getting a trashy laptop setup for use in a kindergarten. Hunting down free kids software etc. Maybe I bit off more than I could chew with all the things I am involved with at the moment, but I don't plan to give up on wikipedia. At the very least I would like to use wiki concepts in some software I want to create. If I can contribute to wikipedia all the better. The only area I have recent experience in is Everquest 2's Station Exchange service. Maybe I could work on creating some npov content for that topic. Mention duping and cyber crime perhaps. Sereh888[edit]

Hi! I'm Back, Sereh888! After a strange,gapped,wikibreak I was too busy to be on a lot. NO I DIDN'T GO AWAY. Sereh888 23:06, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Annelies Tanghe[edit]

You mentioned in your edit "if the band has an article, why shouldn't the singer"? Both of those were created by the same author, and neither of them have sources or even an assertion of notability attached to them. It could be that neither of them have a case. Because articles are not static on Wikipedia, the simple fact of having an article can't be used to establish notability. ColourBurst 22:50, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

New pages per minute[edit]

Hello. It ought to be possible to upload about half a dozen per minute with a few windows open but it often doesn't happen like that. These bulk uploads for cricket are nearly done now with only Australia left after I finish India. Then I'm going to relax a bit! All the best. --BlackJack | talk page 14:26, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Police collecting[edit]

The reason I had moved the books down is that normally published works go in the External links and references section. Chris 19:24, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Edits to Dien Bien Phu[edit]

You recently made some edits to the Battle of Dien Bien Phu article, citing 'The Last Valley'. I'd appreciate it if your citations could include a page number, as all the other citations do. Also, you cited it as 'the last valley', which is generally not how to properly capitalize a title. Raul654 18:29, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

That's true of the paperback [1], but not of the hardback [2]. In the absence of consistency on their part, I think we can assume it's supposed to be capitalized in the usual way. Raul654 18:55, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Follow up - still missing a page number for ref 18. Raul654 06:28, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I know you said the comment cited in #18 is made throughout the book, but I'd still appreciate at least one page number. Raul654 04:38, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Re: Mahdist War[edit]

Well... Not really. The Mahdists had several different flags, but none was a national flag like the British and Egyptians had. Apparently the Khalifa(sucessor of the Mahdi) flew a black flag, with inscriptions from the Coran and the recitation of the Mahdist creed. I haven't found a faithful reproduction of this anywhere. Apart from this, every Emir had a different flag. For an example of a Mahdist flag see here: [3]. And thanks for adding those flags! Raoulduke47 10:17, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
Actually, the Khalifa's flag might have looked a bit like this: . Maybe we could use this one...
Raoulduke47 19:19, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Yes i know it's the flag used for Al Qaeda, but I'm not sure it's the flag of Al Qaeda(if AlQaeda do fly a flag, which is less than certain). My point is, at the Battle of Omdurman, the Khalifa Abdallahi ibn Muhammad flew a black flag, with Arabic inscriptions, that would have been reasonably similar to this one: . But if you think that's taking too great a liberty with history, then i'll drop the idea.Raoulduke47 13:32, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

DYK[edit]

Updated DYK query On 16 February, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article René Cogny, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

I shortened the hook a little so it would fit on the main page, but I don't think I've changed it materially. --Yomanganitalk 10:45, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Re:Mozambican War of Independence[edit]

What a great article, a work of art. I just made a minor adjustment to the intro., but feel free to make any changes to my changes. It is always nice to hear from a friend. Tony the Marine 22:00, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

  • No, I don't think the lead is too long. I think it is perfect. If you were to nominate the article for GA status or FA status, one of the things that they normally are against is a short intro. Tony the Marine 23:57, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
We'll wait to see what peer review has to say. Then if you need any help, I'll be there for you. Tony the Marine 01:17, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Excellent!. I'm sure that it'll make GA status. After it makes GA, I myself will nominate it for FA. What I like about you is your dedication and that you are a very level-headed person and for me it is honor to have befriended you. I've been keeping my eye on the dispute situation and you've handed it well. After we see how far your article will go, I will work on your promotion (Consider something sort of a "Godfather", I kind of adopted you). Tony the Marine 18:30, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Can't wait to see your article in GA. Once it's done, we'll go all the way. Oh, check this out Wall of Honor, I hope you like it. Tony the Marine 03:55, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

  • 'Great!, the map looks fine as is. O.K., I know that you haven't recieved the GA yet, but you will. If you want to start to work on converting it into an FA, I recommend that you look into the following:

1. The last paragraphs of the Rise of FRELIMO may need some ciatations.

2. In the Conflict, "Insurgency from 1964 to 1969" section, add a citation for the following:

"With the initial FRELIMO attacks in Chai Chai, the fighting spread to Niassa and Tete at the centre of the country by August 21, according to a report from the Portuguese army."

3. In the Portuguese development program section, the last paragraph "The dam also deprived farmers of the much needed annual floods, which would otherwise re-fertilise the plantations" may need a citation.

4. Same for Carnation Revolution, citation for the last paragraph.

I know that in some cases you may have repeat a citation, but that doesn't matter. Tony the Marine 23:22, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

(P.S. Great work)

Reply[edit]

I don't think there's much you could do in terms of conflict resolution or mediation in this case, aside from encouraging cool-headedness, which you're already doing. I can't think of anything that needs to be conveyed to Patchbook that hasn't already. He's made it clear that it's personal for him, and that he won't respond to you as an objective or disinterested party. If things deteriorate, it'll all be documented if we need make a compelling case for outside intervention. We all just have to be diligent in minimizing disruptions as they come up. Bobanny 01:04, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Charles Piroth: Notes[edit]

It would be good with page numbers for the notes on the Charles Piroth article. Another thing, usually one only gives the complete name of the book in the first note and after that only the surname of the author and the page number. Carl Logan 19:41, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

living people[edit]

Hello, I'm sure you will notice a change I made in an article you recently create. Don't think it was vandalism or something else; please just see WP:LIVING, WP:SOAPBOX and WP:Reliable sources. Not everyone might appreciate fairly inoffensive information. Cheers ! Tazmaniacs

Hi! no, the ref did contain that info, but it was very short and allusive, beside coming from a personal website. I just wondered if the person in question had admitted to that. Note that it is not on the biographical entry — main reason of my musing. Isn't there some (auto)biography rather to source on a users.skynet site? All in all, it's not a great deal (and I personally find your article interesting, I've linked to it), but the person in question might have some susceptibility concerning the matter, and not wish to have personal biographical details which are over 50 years old spread over Wikipedia. That's why I refer you to guidelines concerning "living people" and "sources" — the claim might be totally correct & all, but since it's not something everyone would necessarily like others to know, I think a very serious source is necessary, and autobiographical all the best. You might think I'm making a fuss about this (I am, in some sort :), but the issue probably arises because of some understanding of privacy in force in the country to which this person is a citizen to.... In some, very different contexts, I would personally refrain, although nothing obliges me to it, to indicate in a Wikipedia article that famous historian Jean Tulard is the son of André Tulard (the guy who created the police files on communists and Jews and handed them up to Theodor Dannecker - they were a fundamental instrument in the raids). It would be far from being libel (as it is true), but well, if people want this kind of information, maybe they ought to look for themselves (note that I may eventually contradict myself in the future: "only dumb people never change opinions....") Cheers! Tazmaniacs

Mozabique War of Independence GA[edit]

Just wanted to let you know if you've not already seen that I've reviewed the article for GA and placed it on hold pending some smallish changes to the structure - let me know if I can be of any help. The Land 22:54, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Yep - might not be online for long this evening, but certainly will be tomorrow. The Land 23:03, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Congrats[edit]

"GA", O.K. You don't have to thank me. I did nothing, it's all yours. I feel honored to be among your friends here. After you do the other references let me know and we'll go for FA. If you want, check my User page and see how I posted my GA's, you may want to do something similar. Tony the Marine 02:15, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Re:Cookie[edit]

Thanks for the cookie. Very tasty indeed (smile). On Friday, we'll go for the upper level, FA. Then we'll keep our fingers crossed and see what happens. Tony the Marine 22:16, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

  • I am getting in touch with some of my good friends in Wikipedia who have featured articles and placing the following notice:

Advise needed

"I read the article Mozambican War of Independence, which was written by SGGH. I believe that it has the makings of an FA. I will nominate it for such on Friday, but before I do that, I want to consult with some of my good friends here who already have a featured article under there belts. That's why I would like you to look it over before I place it in nomination and if you have any advice to give User:SGGH, be my guest." Your friend Tony the Marine 01:15, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

So, don't worry if you start receiving advice. Tony the Marine 01:15, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

I posted the notice in the "talk" pages of three excellent administrators who are also close friends of mine. They're are very trustworthy. They are: User: ERcheck, User: Brookie and User: Davidcannon. Tony the Marine 19:32, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Harriet Lane[edit]

A merge is a good idea on these articles since they are obviously about the same thing. You did some good work on the article and we should definitely retain those parts.

Usually with ships, we use the name of the ship that it had the longest, or the most prominently and then redirect other names to that main article. Harriet Lane appears to have been "USS" for two years and "CSS" for two months. See the conventions for this. I won't be able to do the work for the merge, as I'm being pulled into off 'pedia things right now. However, I trust you to do what needs to be done, if you'd like to go ahead and do the merge. Thanks. Jinian 12:14, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

I received this message and I'm forwarding it to you:

Mozambican War of Independence

Hi there, Tony! I'm sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get back to you and return the nice message you left on my talk page. Life has been absolutely chaotic for me this week, with so much happening that I don't know whether I'm on my head or my heels, and have had hardly any time to get on wikipedia at all! But at last I'm able to squeeze in a few minutes for my favourite hobby. Yes, I think the Mozambican War of Independence article is an excellent candidate for FA status and would strongly encourage you to go ahead with the nomination. It's one of the best articles I've seen.

I hope you and your family are well. God bless you! David Cannon 22:07, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

So, get ready! Tony the Marine 23:23, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

FA nomination[edit]

I have nominated the Mozambican War of Independence article for FA status. Place this page Featured article candidates/Mozambican War of Independence in your watchlist and respond to comments. Good luck. Tony the Marine 03:45, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Remeber to address "every concern quickly". Someone already stated thier concern in regard to some images copyright status. After you address the concerns be sure to let the person know in his or her User talk page and in the Nom page also. This will show the concerned person that you really care about thier comments and may get you a "support" vote. Tony the Marine 16:01, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
Nope, it wouldn't look right.Tony the Marine 20:47, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Re:Articles[edit]

I took a look at the articles, nice. I added a "Award and decorations" section to the articles of Generals English and Karch. I invented the idea of posting the ribbons in an "Award and decorations" section to military articles when I wrote the 2/9 article and since then it has caught on like fire. Tell me if you like it. I am so sorry in involving you once more in this, but Soopa is being out of order. He is claiming we are having a private joke. Please, i would be grateful if you talked to him. Kind regards, Zesty Prospect 17:40, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks[edit]

That's alright. I can understand. You made a judgement and you didn't know it was a joke, and ignore Zesty Project he's taking the joke a bit too far. --Soopa hoops77 18:23, 8 March 2007 (UTC)--

Thank you, SGGH![edit]

Thank you for welcoming me to Wikipedia! I hope I can contribute some good information, especially to the Law Enforcement Wikiproject. I am trying to get used to all the tools here, as well as the appropriate formatting and such. I think I can help flesh out some of the forensics articles, I just have to look for some resources to cite rather than personal experience!

Thanks again, and I am definitely open to any advice or criticism you may have! Ocarina Cave Girl 04:23, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Images in FAC[edit]

Yeah, I've been looking into the matter and I wanted to see how you would handle it. So, far so good. Do this, since those images are from a forgein militray, edit the image page and post your rationale. Something like this: "I believe that these images are of public domain because they are of a military nature. The image is soley used with the purpose of depicting the person or action mentioned in said article."

That should cover it for now until someone deems them to be within a copyright violation. You have to try to keep others from joining the first oppose's bandwagon, by providing some rationale. Tony the Marine 20:33, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Mozambican War of Independence reply from SG[edit]

Hey Sandy, thanks for your comments on the FAC page, I have taken them to heart and worked on the article, and I would like to invite you to take another look and update your views so I can see if I am moving along the right lines? Ta! SGGH 10:31, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

I just took a very quick glance; footnotes are still not formatted. Several websources are missing the publisher (should also include author and publication date when available) and most do not have a complete last access date (month, day, year). I'll be glad to look further once the footnotes are done; see WP:CITE/ES SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:52, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
I just meant to make sure the footnotes follow a consistent format (whichever you choose), and that notes include publisher, last access date on all websources, and author and date when those are available. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:47, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes, the method of having full info listed under a References section, with abbreviated info under Footnotes, is common. If you don't have last access dates, and if you check the sites today and the info is still there, yes, you can just add today's date as the last access date. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:53, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
I am really busy, so let me know when you're good and done, and I'll go have a look. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:32, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

Starting through it:

  • Why is the year wikilinked here? Normally, solo years aren't wikilinked. Malyn Newitt, A History of Mozambique, 1995 p. 571
  • Ditto, here. Tor Sellstrǒm, Liberation in Southern Africa[5], 2000, p.38-54, retrieved on March 10, 2007 (Throughout - single years shouldn't wikilinked).
  • It's not necessary to remove and expand links like [5] above, but it does make for a more attractive, professional article if you expand the link and remove the number by giving the link a name. There are seventeen of these in the article, and those numbers fight with the ref numbers, making for an unprofessional presentation. Because that's not in any guideline, it's not an objection—the article will look more professional if you name the 17 links.
  • It's helpful to readers with slow and old browsers if you include (PDF) in the expanded name of links like this: João Paulo Borges Coelho, African Troops in the Portuguese Colonial Army, 1961–1974: Angola, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique, Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo, Mozambique, 2002[6] retrieved on March 10, 2007
  • Putting References - Printed matter in alphabetical order by author last name would be a courtesy to our readers, and make your references easier to locate.
  • I fixed some repeat refs by using named refs; the rest should be checked. It's time consuming to get it right, and you almost have to write each one down to see which ones were missed.

Notes and refs in better shape now. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:38, 10 March 2007 (UTC) Hard to understand where we're getting crossed up, so I'll try to start at the beginning. Different countries use different date conventions; on Wikiipedia, full dates are wikilinked so that date preferences will be shown according to each editor's settings. Some see Month Day, Year, while other see Day Month Year. We wikilink full dates so that preferences work. We don't link Month year, or solo years. Your dates are still not linked correctly; for example, in notes and references, you've wikilinked month day, but not year. See WP:DATE SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:46, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

No, I can't support considering the considerable list posted to the talk page by Jmabel. In fact, I would be more likely to consider another oppose, except that a third oppose would be foolish :-) I hope someone gets on that list fast; then, I'll be traveling and won't be able to weigh in. Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:21, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

It's an ongoing problem, that gets worse when the FAC page gets overloaded as it is now (with 70 candidates), so that reviewers don't give careful attention to articles, offsetting the "fan" support. There's nothing as discouraging as seeing Support votes on articles with obvious deficiencies, because "bad" FAs become guides and samples for future editor efforts. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:14, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Nearly there[edit]

Thanks very much your barnstar. Keep up the good work. We're nearly there with the article!-- Zleitzen(talk) 13:26, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion[edit]

After, you take care of the situations planted and saying so, as you have been doing all along, go to the Users "talk page" and let them know that you have done as requested and ask them if they would now consider giving you a "support" vote on the FA. I've noticed that you have taken care of the concerns posted, but that some of these users who suggested the changes have not voted. You're doing good. Tony the Marine 18:58, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Congrats!!![edit]

This user created a featured article: Mozambican War of Independence

I have bigger plans for you so, send me an e-mail. I'll be a little busy today, but I'll get back to you. Tony the Marine 15:19, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
