Request for Rollback Abilites[edit]

Hi, I was just poking around Wikipedia making small edits here and there and then I stumbled on a featured called Rollback, All admins have it and the page says that any admin can grant it to a user in good standing (I'm not sure what "Good Standing" is, but I've never been blocked or warned for doing something I shouldn't), it also said that I should approach an admin about getting Rollback abilities (Which would allow me to roll back all edits by a user that was vandalizing) and being that your the only admin that I know I figured that you'd be a good choice to ask :).

User:Mifter[edit]

I would like to be granted rollback abilities as to make reverting multiple edits by vandals considerably faster which would allow me to be able to revert more vandalism is a much shorter period of time. Mifter (talk) 02:40, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

If you don’t think that I need Rollback abilities, I am not experienced enough to receive them, or if you want me to go to WP:RFR to get a second opinion I understand Perfectly :). Thanks, Mifter (talk) 02:40, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks a Ton for granting me Rollback Abilites!!!! :) (I left a little note on my talk page for you if you wish to read it) Anyways Thanks again!--Mifter (talk) 22:20, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Believe me, I understand[edit]

Check out the "list of events called massacres" page. Read about five years (not a typo) of "discussion". The final solution they found was the name above.

You're right. The page I am creating is patently ridiculous. But so is the "list of events called massacre".

If you really don't want me to create this page to make my point, I will cooperate w no complaint (I DO understand). However, if you (and other admins) let it be created, I will promise it will not exist for more than a couple weeks - I'll delete the stupid thing myself.Aaaronsmith (talk) 23:00, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Don't want to drag you into the ugly/stupid 5 years of contention on the original page (although it might make "intereseting" reading if you have a couple evening to kill). I am trying to make a point to the people who have been editing (some seriously, some as umm - less seriously) the "massacre" article. The criteria they have settled on now (and NOT by unanimity) works because it is very tight. It is also so tight as to render the article almost (not quite) as useless as the one I am creating. It will include the "Boston Massacre" (NOT a massacre according to the colonial jury that tried the sodiers), it will not include little things like Bataan death march, Servile war, etc.
Just tell me to drop it and I will for simple courtesy. I won't even try to receate until you respond one way or the other.Aaaronsmith (talk) 23:10, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the help with AFD[edit]

Speedy deletion of Willis Lent[edit]

Hi, sorry about the SD of Willis Lent; I tend to take new pages on their own merit when patrolling, and end up looking at the user talk page after tagging them. That said, what's the significance of blue linking a redirect? Wouldn't it have been just as easy to set up a stub at the target (so it wouldn't fall under speedy deletion), then make the redirect...? --bd_ (talk) 10:33, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi SGGH, would you mind restoring this image? [1] It was uploaded by a user who has been blocked, not banned, and it was being used legitimately with a valid licence. Many thanks, SlimVirgin (talk)(contribs) 16:52, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, long time no see! I was psyched to see your signature on a talk page I was visiting lately, because I haven't seen you in so long and was actually wondering about you the other day. How've you been? delldot talk 21:36, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm good, been doing more article writing than the vandalism stuff that I usually do (that is, fighting it, not committing it, usually :P). Congrats on the FA! delldot talk 22:07, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

really deleted?[edit]

Hey dude I have a question but I also type really fast too so i cdon't ahve time to spell check this etier i'm just bashing it out please tell me what's going on with these pics whehtert they are actually deleted or not, because look this one is still here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:FalunMorning_Practice1996.jpg but needed to be taken out from the page anyway because it is not tagged properly but if i go ahead and give it teh proper fair use explanation that will be cool to put back in the article yes or not just let me know what's going on cheers thanks sorry.--Asdfg12345 10:52, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. Your reply confuses me further. My concerns can be addressed with a few simple questions:

why did you remove the picture (comment it out) from the article?

can I put it back?

is the licensing status of the image in dispute?

Anything further?

There has been issues with these images. This doesn't appear to be in the same category. There were a stack of images from the Falun Gong website Clearwisdom which were all removed because their copyright status was not properly established. Many of those, though not all of them, will be used again but as Fair Use images, rather than free ones. I don't think this is such a case, but I am unsure on the questions above. Thanks.--Asdfg12345 13:56, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks mate. Another question: can I request images to be undeleted so I can retag them? As I say, there are a number now which have been sent to purgatory because they turned not to be free enough for wiki, but which will easily qualify for fair use. The image names are often still embedded in the articles, as they were usually commented out. I hope you will be able to assess whether this is possible, tell me who can do it, and also tell me whether that will actually result in a net time saving, or whether it would be more efficient for me to just reupload them with fair use claims. I appreciate all your time, by the way. --Asdfg12345 14:04, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

No worries, I'll reupload them. Article looks interesting. What a piece of historical minutiae I never would have otherwise known about.--Asdfg12345 14:13, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

That image was deleted[edit]

Hello. Can you tell me why that image was deleted, in the end? I thought it wasn't. There were no tags on the image page saying it was a problem. It may have needed to be retagged as "Fair Use", though that wasn't made clear on the image page. Do you have any idea about this case? --Asdfg12345 23:32, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

No worries, thanks anyway though!--Asdfg12345 03:04, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, SGGH. I saw your name on the list of volunteers for peer reviews, so I thought I'd drop you a line to ask you to look at retiarius if you get the chance. I'm hoping to drop it at FAC soon, so any comments on what needs changing before that can be done would be much appreciated. The peer review page is here. BCAD[edit]

Hi!

Just a courtesy message to say that some confusion was created by another user assessing loads of articles in your range. I've sorted it out (I think) by moving his stuff to another range and cutting and pasting replacement sub-sections into yours. The fix should be invisible. If anythingh is broken, please let me know. New York City Department of Correction[edit]

Hi, I was wondering if you or someone working with you could help out with the New York City Department of Correction article? I want to get an infobox right (currently just copied the NYPD infobox) and want to go into depth about bistory and the facilities too. Arnabdas (talk) 16:47, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Hey thanks for your help! The article is looking MUCH better. I think it can be expanded further to include more history, facilities, etc but we definitely needed the help to get it started as you gave. Thanks again! Arnabdas (talk) 21:12, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Inglewood, Virginia[edit]

I just created an article for Inglewood, Virginia. Then I did some research and found there are two Inglewoods in two different counties. One in Rockingham County the other in Mecklenburg County. What should I name the articles to differentiate? -WarthogDemon 19:49, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, well the problem with that would be that there's already a disambig page for Inglewood . . . so it'd be a disambiguation page going to a disambiguation page. :P Eh, I'll sort it out. Thanks anyway! :) -WarthogDemon 19:55, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
Usual procedure is: Townname, Countyname County, Statename; as in Rome, Adams County, Wisconsin and Rome, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. There is a dab page for Rome, Wisconsin. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:03, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

195... in France[edit]

Hi SGGH - In my view, cats like 195.. in France should be used for all articles that are about events in which France was involved in 195.. - this has been the common practice to date. As a reader I would want to see everything related to France in 195.., events that took place in France only would be very restrictive and not give a historical or accurate perspective. Otherwise, for instance, you could not include the Battle of Trafalgar for 1805 in England as it took place at sea and not in England, yet it was a major English event. Operation Camargue should indeed be in 1953 in Vietnam, but also in 1953 in France since it was an event involving the French. Hope this makes the logic clear. Ardfern (talk) 20:12, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Peer review idea[edit]

Hi, I have made a proposal that no peer review request be archived without some response. To aid in this, there is a new list of PR requests at least one week old that have had no repsonses beyond a semi-automated peer review. This list is at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog.

There are just over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, so I figure if each of these volunteers reviewed just one or two PR requests without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog (as there have been 2 or 3 such unanswered requests a day on average).

If you would be able to help out with a review or two a month from the "no responses" backlog list that would be great (and much appreciated). Please discuss questions, comments, or ideas at the PR talk page and thanks in advance for your help, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:20, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks so much for the two reviews! Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:29, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Style question[edit]

I have been attempting to add to the lists of law enforcement agencies in each state. While doing so, I found several departments that directed to other states. In an effort to correct this I began to incorporate the state name into the title for clarity. (I changed Orleans County Sheriff's Office to Orleans County, New York Sheriff's Office as there are several Orleans Counties and Orleans Parish in LA).

User:Dynaflow disagrees with this manner of identification and believes that this is incorrect and it should be Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office (New York). This user very nicely reverted every page I had changed before allowing me to respond. I would like to know if there is a consensus on this, and if not how we can obtain one. I would like to generate acceptable content the first time around.

Further, User:Dynaflow seems to believe that disambiguation pages should only be created when the second article of a group is created. For example, There are 33 or so Washington County Sheriff's Offices. I made a page listing them, although most do not have an article yet created. I would like to know the groups opinion on this as well.

Thanks SGT141 (talk) 16:16, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
