New Page Review - newsletter No.3

Hello Vexations,

Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. Please be sure to vote. Any registered, confirmed editor can vote. Nominations are now closed.

Still a MASSIVE backlog

We now have 811 New Page Reviewers but despite numerous appeals for help, the backlog has NOT been significantly reduced.
If you asked for the New Page Reviewer right, please consider investing a bit of time - every little helps preventing spam and trash entering the mainspace and Google when the 'NO_INDEX' tags expire.

Discuss this newsletter here. If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the mailing list. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 15:35, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

Question about creating a new page with duplicate names

Hello,

I would Like to create a wikipedia page for Canadian Filmmaker Oz Yilmaz, but I see that there is already a page for a completely different Oz Yilmaz who is an engineer.

How do I go about creating a page for something with the same name as a page that already exists?

Thank you very much — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cfbegin (talkcontribs) 20:38, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello @Cfbegin: it is common to include the subject's occupation in brackets after the name. For example, you might use Oz Yilmaz (filmmaker) 20:58, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

Major General Raymond Haddock

I want you to know I deleted the page I had created for General Haddock. Those items that were written were known by me because I was there with him. Having to have a reference for something I know first hand is nuts. I won't be participating anymore. I was there when the Berlin Wall fell. At Checkpoint Charlie. I am sure I would need a reference for my personal experience as well. Glad you did this before I put any additional effort into it.

Best wishes

I know you are just trying to keep the site straight but the note could have been written in a way. I felt like a fool for even trying.

Hello Mikelsey5 I'm sorry that your experience with Wikipedia so far has not been positive. I would like to believe that I am available to help newcomers. I am afraid that your expectation that you can add unsourced information to the encyclopedia is not something we can accomodate; verifiability is a core policy. You would have to find another website where unsourced content is welcome. Mduvekot (talk) 20:05, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

Suggested Improvements/Copyright comment

Thank you for your comments. I appreciate your suggestions. Please note that the names of artwork and the locations where they were displayed is not copyright infringement, they are fact and cannot be rewritten in my own words without then making them false. As to the bio of the artist, the description was posted with the artist's permission and approval - does that still constitute copyright violation? If so, I will happily work to reword per your suggestion. LARC (talk) 21:59, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

Hello, LARC Very briefly: Yes. I think you'll find that this page answers your question in detail: Wikipedia:Copying text from other sources. Mduvekot (talk) 22:03, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
Hi Mduvekot Ok, I have reworked the bio and hope it attends to your concerns. Please note, I cannot change the proper names of degrees, grants, organizations, artworks or places. Those are the remaining items now indicated in the copyright detector. LARC (talk) 23:11, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

revert of move results in disassociated talk page

. I reverted this move but forgot to consider that I had removed some of the text and reinserted it in the talk page. Because the article was originally created on the talk page of the editor, the peer review is now at Talk:Origins of Modesty in Regards to Women. Created a bit of a mess I'm afraid. Mduvekot (talk) 14:50, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

Fixed. I'm not sure why you moved the article to the user talk (should have been a subpage of the userspace), so I've shifted it all to the proper locations. Primefac (talk) 15:52, 11 March 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, Primefac what happened was that Lstaben15 had created the article at User talk:Lstaben15/sandbox in stead of User:Lstaben15/sandbox, so when I reverted the move to Origins of Modesty in Regards to Women, it did not end up in the right place, and of course the associated talk page didn't go to User talk:Lstaben15/sandbox either. I should have noticed that reverting the move would not have the desired effect. Thanks for your help. Mduvekot (talk) 17:46, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Texte zur Kunst

The article Texte zur Kunst has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence of any notability . Fails WP:GNG. Tagging for notability and insufficient references has not produced any improvement

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.  Velella  Velella Talk   14:28, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Velella I somehow missed the notification of your tagging of Texte zur Kunst, and even if I had, I wouldn't have expected you to PROD it. How is this an uncontroversial deletion? Give me a chance to address the issue, will you? Do your read German, by chance? Whatever sources I come up with are likely in German. Mduvekot (talk) 21:16, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Lyse Lemieux

Hi Mduvekot, This is LadyBarbarella. I just posted a new article, and you sent me a helpful note. I know that I took directly from the sources, as I thought that a quote would be okay as long as it is cited. Is it not? Can we not use other people's words to aid in our edits? I thought writing it in my own words would not be neutral, and thus against wiki policy. I'd love more input on this! June Clark disambiguation

When you have a moment, would you mind having a look at June Clark and June Clark (artist) etc? I do not fully understand disambiguation and I also contributed to the June Clark (artist) article so am not neutral -- but I don't see why the one page gets to be a default and the others have descriptive qualifiers. Shouldn't June Clark be a central page that says "June Clark may refer to: " etc? Thanks for any light you can shed. - the artchivist (talk) 19:00, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Done artchivist1 I had two options, I think. I could have created a new page June Clark (disambiguation) and added a link to the article about June Clark the nurse/academic, or I could do what I ended doing: moved June Clark to June Clark (nurse) and fix all the pages that link to June Clark so that they link to the correct June Clark. Neda Moridpour

Hi, you reverted my edit at Neda Moridpour, where I proposed the article for deletion, citing its previous deletion proposal. However, its previous proposed deletion was done under {{Prod blp/dated}} because it was a biography created without any references. The third point listed under WP:BLPPROD#Objecting reads: "if a relevant and reliable source has been provided but you still believe the biography should be deleted, use one of the regular deletion processes." This article is still eligible for deletion under the regular prod. This was previously subject to discussion here, which confirmed this. xplicit 23:54, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

@Explicit: I'll confess I wasn't aware of that. What do you prefer: I revert my edit, or take it straight to AfD? Mduvekot (talk) 00:42, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Page mover granted

Hello, Mduvekot. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, and move subpages when moving the parent page(s).

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Hi Sir, I am writing on the deletion of my page "Cynthia Rosah B Hounihui." His page is for my assignment which we were requested to create an article on a Female Leader in our community. Women are not recognised as men in our society for their work thus the reason for us creating articles on women who have helped in community work one way or the other. I would be happy if you could consider my page and allow it to go live just for a week for our course coordinator to access it before deleting it. Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chaniell Meke (talkcontribs) 05:06, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

Chaniell Meke You've been assigned the hardest thing there is on Wikipedia; writing a biography of a living person in an area where systemic bias is an enormous problem. As far as I can tell, you have received no training or guidance. That is not fair to you. I'd love a word with your course coordinator. Please point them to this discussion, or ask them to get in touch with me. The problem, as you have probably noticed by now, is that is is incredibly difficult to establish the notability of women from your community when they receive little attention in the media in the first place. Sometimes athletes are notable, if they participate in international events representing their nation, as participants in the Olympic games for example. That automatically establishes notability, even if there is little coverage. But for social activists, no such exception exists. You must show that other people have written about your subject in reliable, independent sources. You are probably dependent upon the few media outlets that exist in the Solomon Islands. As you point out, they are not recognized as men are. As far as I can tell, only two women from the Solomon Islands who are not athletes are the subject of a Wikipedia article: Vika Lusibaea and Hilda Kari.
The article you wrote was not suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia. This has been pointed out to you on more than one occasion, here, here, here and here. It has been deleted under Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#A7, because the article did not indicate why its subject is important or significant. That is an even lower standard than notability. I noticed that you have recreated the article in User space, where it is relatively safe from deletion. You may want to direct your course coordinator there. It is unfortunate that rather than improving your article or asking for help, you chose to simply remove the the deletion notifications, ignored the advice on Wikipedia:Your_first_article as well as the guidance on notability and sources in the article wizard. Things like that tend to make other editors a bit grumpy, because you create extra work for them, but show no willingness to learn. I have found that if you ask for help, and you are listening to the advice that experienced editors give you, you can always find someone who is willing to help you. The teahouse is a great start.
I know this can be frustrating. Wikipedia, as a so-called [[Wikipedia:No_original research#Primary, secondary and tertiary_sources}tertiary source]] (we summarize what other people have written) is not a very good tool for changing the fact that reporting on women's accomplishments is lacking.
I hope you are not discouraged. You should remember that what you tried is extraordinarily difficult, and that you will be successful if you persist. All the best, Mduvekot (talk) 18:45, 31 March 2017 (UTC)

Hello Mduvekot,

Cullen that must have been an error. I certainly did not intend to do that. Very sorry. 01:51, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
Cullen I think it happened because I might have inadvertently hit a rollback button on a tablet device while looking at my watchlist. I have taken measures to hide to rollback from my watchlist. Rollback is useful, but I would not use it from a watchlist without looking at the page history. I hope this solves the issue. Mduvekot (talk) 01:28, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

New pages patrol stats

Thank you for posting the "Stats for April 4, 2017" item. I was surprised to see my name in the list. Frankly, most of that total came from similar articles about athletes that I could process faster than if the same number of articles had been about a variety of topics.

I must admit that it's a bit depressing to see that the number of unreviewed articles continues to grow. Your statistics for April 4 indicate that the number of new articles exceeded the number reviewed by about 50 percent. Since I began reviewing several weeks ago, the total at the bottom of the "New pages feed" window has increased from less than 15,000 to 18,187 (at the time I am writing this post).

Is there any hope of reversing the trend? Certainly, it's good to have new articles coming in, but I wonder whether some of the people who created some of those 18,000-and-growing articles will become discouraged and stop contributing. Eddie Blick (talk) 01:58, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

Please help! Decibel Therapeutics

Hi Mduvekot. Thanks so much for your comments on my article, Decibel Therapeutics. I'm pretty new to Wikipedia, and I'm currently learning about it in a class I'm taking in college. I'm really hoping you can provide some help for improving my page on Decibel Therapeutics, because it would be really cool to successfully create my own page. Decibel Therapeutics is a company I've read about in the news and although it's new, I think it's super noteworthy because the work it's doing is very innovative in the medical field. While I understand the edits that were made, I'm hoping you can provide more tips for me so that my article will survive in the main space. Because it's new, I've only been able to find some news-type articles online. Are those reputable sources? Thanks again. Marinamano (talk) 17:29, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi MarinamanoThanks for reaching out. I'm aware of the class, and that some of you have run into some trouble. I've noticed that the article you worked on has been "trimmed back" as some of us wikipedians might say, or as I imagine you feel, "butchered". The first thing I would propose, and frankly I would extend this offer to almost everybody in your class, is that we move the page to the draft namespace, where it is safe from deletion (with some exceptions, copyright violations are very strictly forbidden) and we can have a look at what can be rescued from your original draft. Hi Marinamano. Please take a look at these articles:
These are featured articles. To be perfectly honest, some of them probably don't meet our current standards anymore, but they are "used by editors as examples for writing other articles". Please take a look at those first, and let me know if you're OK with moving Decibel Therapeutics to Draft.

NPR

Contrary to what people might think based on comments I occasionally make, I'm not really a fan of stats, preferring the solid evidence of empiracal experience. However, NPP is certainly an area where stats can quickly illustrate what is going wrong, and put an end to the unfounded conjecture. Thank you again for doing what you can. I also think it's time to start handing out some of those barnstars I made in preparation to my retirement from NPP. Some individuals may qualify for not one, but several of them already. Barnstars serve not just as an encouragement for the editor concerned, but also for other users who see them on talk pages. There are no rules as to who can hand out barnstars - they are not the exclusive domain of the new NPP coords. Perhaps you might wish to rise to the challenge of sifting through your stats and seeing who deserves some recognition for their work. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:31, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Michiel, Thank you for your interest and attention to the article. I tried to fix the issues, hopefully it is enough to reach "notability" of the information? I added links to independent official governmental sources (president of Poland, Polish Press Agency), national scientific (Polish Academy of Sciences), international scientific bodies (EAAE) and so on. Could you be so kind and check it and remove the tag(s) about non-notability if convenient? Have a good day,LukaszKatlewa (talk) 07:19, 13 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello Zoran.stojsavljevic. You can move a page to mainspace yourself, using the Move menu (next to Edit, View History etc.) That should take you here, where you can change Draft to (Article) to move it back into mainspace. I'm not recommending that you do that quite yet. I don't see that any discussion about your draft has taken place anywhere. Please consider discussing at Talk:Coreboot first. Hi FranciscoMG, I think you're contacting me because I left you a message about Phytocosmetics on your talk page. I don't understand what your problem is. You have posted a message on my talk page, so you can't be blocked. I am not an administrator and I cannot do anything about blocking. I did see that there is a request for help from an administrator on your talk page, so I hope that someone can help sort you out. I think it would be easier for you if we could find someone who spoke Portuguese. I have looked for someone who is both an administrator and who speaks Portuguese, but didn't see anyone. Perhaps @RadiX:, who you have mentioned on your talk page can help?

County Friedwaldau Redirect Mistake

Michael: Your redirect is an unintentional mistake. You forwarded a historical county in Moravia (which no longer exists) to the current name of one of the towns that was in that historical county. Town boundaries are not the same as county boundaries, and in this instance, their is no current county equivalent. Clearly this was unintentional. Please revert. Thanks. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=County_Friewaldau&action=history Watkec (talk) 21:57, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello Watkec I'd be happy to correct it, but can you clarify the spelling? So far I've seen Friedwaldau, County Friewaldau and Freiwaldau. German wikipedia calls it either Landkreis Freiwaldau and redirects Freiwaldau to Jeseník, as does Czech Wikipedia. I'm also not sure about using country as the translation of "landkreis". Isn't "district" more accurate here? It's also listed as a "rural district" in Reichsgau_Sudetenland. How about simply calling it Landkreis Freiwaldau? Mduvekot (talk) 22:30, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
In my view "County" is the appropriate term because "district" is not a term used for the area of an administrative government entity (at least in American, British and Canadian English -- where "county" prevails). Note here: https://dict.leo.org/german-english/Landkreis?side=right These areas had governmental oversight by area. As far as I know, "Landkreis" was a term used in less populated areas, and "Kreis" was used in more populated areas. Technically "Kreis" literally means "Circle" - but in German it designated an administrative area of control. To most English readers "County" is preferred because that gives the same idea of an area of administration. In terms of the spelling, it should be the German spelling (which is what is historically referred to here) and thus should be "Freiwaldau." Hope that helps. Watkec (talk) 02:56, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
Hello Watkec, I've looked at some of the enwiki articles in de:Kategorie:Landkreis in Bayern and a few others, and the preferred way to title appears to be Name (district), and the category is always Districts of . For the sake of consistency, would you agree to use Freiwaldau (district)? all the best, Mduvekot (talk) 10:45, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:38, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

Anna Frodesiak thank you for your consideration. It had occurred to me that I do work in maintenance areas where it would make sense to have access to some extra tools, and I do enjoy helping out where I can. What has made me decide to hold off was that I had some goals in mind that I wanted to accomplish before running that I haven't met yet, some content related goals like one or two GAs and some related to maintenance tasks, like experience with merges, experience with TfD, and perhaps some NACs at AfD. Also, I have recently (see above) made a boneheaded misstep that I think would tank a nomination and I'd like to put some time and some quality contributions between that and a run at ORCP. All the best, Mduvekot (talk) 21:04, 15 April 2017 (UTC)
GA? I ran with no GAs and and one or two closures and ended up with a top ten ever in RfA supports. Content creation is good and you do that. Your manner is great too. Requiring GA is overkill and the absence won't tank an RfA. As for the misstep, well, only admins can see that and they can say if it is forgivable. I think it is. Live and learn. I've made a few serious mistakes and that is normal. I wouldn't worry about it. The poll will tell you if you do need to worry. You are rock solid in many areas and the poll is there exactly to give you an idea of what the community thinks. It is nothing to fear. I enourage you to give it a go. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:17, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

I'm sorry for not being clearer on the AfD. I live in London, and its late - I should already be in bed :) . I just don't understand how we can include anything from source number 3 given that it doesn't exist (as far as I can tell). I am going to rescind the AfD given your comments. I would like to point out that I am and was 'author blind' which was your main concern in the AfD. I didn't consider the author as it doesn't really matter usually, I (almost) always assume good faith and uphold the other pillars of Wikipedia (although, if you check my talk page, a certain someone might disagree with you) and so this was in no way me jumping to conclusions, as I would have CSD'd under WP:G11 if that was the case. I was just genuinely concerned about how WP:SOAPy this article sounded given the lack of a piece in a national newspaper - even one piece in the NYT would have stopped me from pressing that button. Thanks for your time and contributions to the AfD, I'm always pleased to see that I'm proved wrong and a topic is, in fact, notable enough to remain on Wiki. Proposed article

Hi! Recently, the article List of former GMA Network talents should not be speedy deleted as being recently created, having no relevant page history and duplicating an existing English Wikipedia topic, because... the list deserves to have its own page just like List of current GMA Network talents. This list is related from the above-mentioned article mainly because there are artists who are formerly working on GMA Network and at the same time not signed under GMA Artist Center (e.g. Glydel Mercado, Billy Crawford, German Moreno, Rudy Fernandez, Agot Isidro, Jaya, etc.) The difference between the two lists is that the first one is composed of artists who are a contract star of GMA Network while the second list is a roster of celebrities who are formerly working on GMA Network, nor signed to their talent agency. I hope you understand me regarding this. Thank you and have a blessing Easter to you! --RenRen070193 (talk) 10:18, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello RenRen070193, I left you a message about the proposal with an explanation on what to do if you didn't want the article deleted. That was twelve days ago. The article was deleted on 00:44:25 today, well after the proposal's deadline of one week expired. It's unfortunate that you've let us know only just now, after it was deleted, why you think the article should have been kept. If you think it is possible to create an article that is built with references providing substantial coverage from independent, reliable sources, not press releases, the GMA website, links to social media, or mere announcements, then you might want to consider a Request for undeletion after referring to [Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons#Restoring_deleted_content]]. Please note that the very strict sourcing requirements verifiability, neutral point of view and no original research for a biography of a living person also apply to lists of people. Finally, to rule out a potential conflict of interest; do you have any relationship to GMA networks that would require disclose per our policy Paid-contribution disclosure or any other relation (employment, family etc) that might create a Conflict of interest? If so, you should try to focus your attention elsewhere. All the best, Mduvekot (talk) 13:44, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Problem with your signature

Hi Mduvekot. Can I check that you are using four tildes to insert your signature to discussion page posts, rather than signing manually? The reason I ask is that your signature here does not meet the requirements of WP:SIGLINK as it is missing a link to at least one of your user pages. Cordless Larry (talk) 07:10, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Cordless Larry. When I answered that question at the Teahouse, I used the Join this discussion link/pop-up, which doesn't offer the same insert signature function that the wikitext editor does. It looks like I may have accidentally added a 5-tilde signature. As far as I can tell my other posts at the Teahouse doe have a proper signature. Does that sound plausible? Mduvekot 11:34, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
Five tildes would have added a timestamp without your name. How did you sign your reply to me here, because that's missing a link too? Cordless Larry (talk) 14:03, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
Go to Special:Preferences. Make sure the checkbox next to "Treat the above as wiki markup. " under the signature is not checked. It looks like that box is checked and you just have "Mduvekot" in the signature box, no wikimarkup. ~ GB fan a "frantic, furious ball of anger" 14:37, 19 April 2017 (UTC)
GB fan is correct. Cordless Larry, can you confirm that my signature now appears as it should? Thank you both. Mduvekot (talk) 14:45, 19 April 2017 (UTC)

Re: Ways to improve Maharram Gasimli

Hi Mduvekot, thank you very much for your comments on Maharram Gasimli. You are very active on wikipedia, wow! I'm wondering if there is another way we could categorize this page. He's more than an academic-- he's also a TV show host and currently holds the chairman position of the Ashugs' Union (a big deal in this country)-- is there another category that would be a better fit for those things? There are also a few more academic references or his works in Azerbaijani, but not in English. I will try to add some references. Thanks for your help! (Buyerlerdeqalardim (talk) 18:05, 22 April 2017 (UTC))

Hello Buyerlerdeqalardim Take a look at the subcategories for Azerbaijani people and keep going down to the finest level of detail. For example, I could start at [:Category:Azerbaijani people]] and then go to Azerbaijani people by occupation‎ > Azerbaijani academics > Faculty by university or college in Azerbaijan > etc. Add whatever category is applicable, as log as you avoid overlap and categories that should only contain subcategories. You would probably know better which ones fit the subject than I do. Mduvekot (talk) 20:21, 22 April 2017 (UTC)

Ciara Taylor's page

Hello, you recently commented on Ciara Taylor's page, which I am working on. It is currently nominated to be deleted - and I would like to clear up that deletion, because I think this source is really crucial. I'm unsure what to do going forward, as I am new to Wikipedia. I understand that there are limited sources on her - but that is exactly the issue I am trying to combat. She is made invisible on main stream media and information, which is a problematic issue. I am looking to give her the recognition that she deserves, but is not given. Please let me know what I should do.

Mwettick (talk) 00:27, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello Mwettick, thanks for reaching out. I think you can rescue the article on Ciara Taylor. Trying to combat something like lack of sources is not the way to do that however. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, a tertiary source. We don't do original research; we summarize what other people have written already. If no sources exist, we have nothing to work with, and no article can be written. Wikipedia is not the place to publish original research. But as far as I can tell, sources do exist. I suggest you try to make a list of the news sources that make note of her in connection with dream defenders, something you could do at Talk:Ciara Taylor and see what that amounts to. We can then see how to incorporate that into the article. All the best, Mduvekot (talk) 01:12, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for getting back to me. This is very helpful! I will work on sources that connect her to dream defenders, and I will work on finding more sources over all. Thank you, all the best, Mwettick (talk) 01:48, 27 April 2017 (UTC)
