Walter Willison

Dear Larry —

I did not create this page but I am the subject of this page.

I check in occassionly to make sure the information is updated and correct. I’m not the adminustrator of this page, but if I can’t correct or update information about myself for the sake of accuracy then what’s the point?

This page has been there as long as I can remember. I am a prominemt public figure in the New York Theatre community. One click of a google seatch will bring up numerous articles and reviews about any play, musical, film, TV show or job mentioned. There are thousands of references all over the internet, including IMDB and IBDB.

The Wikipedia link is the first that will show up when doing an internet search for information about me. And now my entire history, a career that spans 55 years, keeps getting deleted as if it were fiction. This accurate detailed page has been reduced to a two sentence soundbite. This is most upsetting.

Sincerely, WALTER WILLISON NYC — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2000:F947:C200:F9CC:6463:769F:92FE (talk) 05:12, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello, Walter. The material isn't being removed because it is believed that it is a fiction, but because it is not properly sourced and because it is a copyright violation because it has been copied from your IMDb biography. If you would like to try to help with rewriting the article with sources and without copyright violations, please follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Simple COI request. WALTER WILLISON Page HELP PLEASE

Larry —

Can’t you or another Editor please fix my page?

I’m not a Wikipedia editor, nor do I want to be one. My one attempt a coupke years ago to add a page for Lee Horwin who is a legitimate performer who has been around for decades was not accepted because I don’t know how to do this.

And now my own page — as a public personality for 55 years — has been practically deleted on the grounds that it contains the same credits as my IMDB pages! My credits are nor more exclusive to IMDB than anyone elses. My bio is the same everywhere. And my page — which I did not originate — has been on Wilipedia forever.

Seriously, as you must have read, I am a Tony Award nominee, I have been starring on Broadway, in films and on TV for over five decades, and now someone has decided I am not worth being properly represented on this website and all my credits have been deleted and I just don’t get it.

I was told to add links and references and I spent time doing that tonight and it was rejected. I don’t understand. I am a public personality. My life and career are public knowledge. I am not the editor of my page. I am not anybody’s editor. I just want my page back.

Before all the info was deleted it was the most complete and thorough record of my career available on line — there were even things listed I had firgotten about — and I am listed in other Wikipedia articles.

Someone set this up years ago. Can’t you or someone else fix it so I am not reduced to a two line soundbite? Isn’t that what Wilipedia editors do? If I am only reduced to a four line sentence about the show I did 48 ago then what’s the point of being listed here at all?

People use this as a reference and I would always direct them here. I even put a link in my recent programsbios saying “If you want to know more go to Wikipedia” because the information was so thorough. Now it’s gone.

Please, can’t you fix whatever is wrong or direct me to someone who can?

Sincerely, WALTER WILLISON — Preceding unsigned comment added by WAWNYC (talkcontribs) 09:56, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

WALTER WILLISON Bio WAS WRITTEN BY ME AND IS NOT THE PROPERTY OF OR COPYRIGHTED BY IMDB

L —

I wrote all of that. It’s the standard bio that has gone out to the press, with periodic updates, for decades. I am the one who posted it on IMDB. This has nothing to do with them.

My bio has begun with the phrase “garnered a Tony Award nomination and a Theatre World Award” since a press agent first wrote that in 1971. It was not written by and is not copyrighted by IMDB.

Even the show titles are highlighted in red as copyrighted by IMDB! For example “Broadway Scandals of 1928: The New 1928 Speakeasy Musical” is the title of an off Broadway musical I wrote in 1982 and which has been recorded on CD. This has nothing to do with IMDB. it’s a title of a show I wrote listed in my bio and resume. But you - or someone — has highlighted in red as IMDB copyrighted. It is NOT! Nor are the majority of the other things highlighted, the shows and the names of the people involved in them.

To highlight all my show titles and the performers in them in red as IMBD copyrighted material is ludicrous. It’s the same as saying you can’t have a Wilipedia page for “The Sound of Music” or “Hello, Dolly!” because they’re listed on IMDB in thousands of bios and resumes.

I pay IMDB PRO annually to include that bio and resume info as does everyone else, so it’s accessible to producers, casting directors and others in the industry. The information is meant to be copied and shared. They didn’t write it. They don’t own it. They don’t even edit, censor or correct it. And one version or another has appeared in programs and Playbills and been sent out in press releases my entire life. It is not owned or copyrighted by anyone but me.

Sincerely, WALTER WILLISON — Preceding unsigned comment added by WAWNYC (talkcontribs) 10:34, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Replied at Talk:Walter Willison#WALTER WILLISON Page IS NOT COPYRIGHT CONTENT. Cordless Larry (talk) 10:42, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Larry —

I’m not sure what you do for a living but I gather you’re not involved in show business. Press agents are hired by actors, writers, producers, production companis, etc. to promite them. We hire them to write about us. They work for us. They don’t own anything they send out. It is meant to be copied, used in articles, reviews, etc. That’s the whole point.

And NOBODY owns show titles or anyones names.

All he show titles and casts are highlighted in red. They are not cooyrighted by IMDB and I don’t know where anyone would even get that idea. If they are then you need to delete your pages about HELLO, DOLLY!, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, MY FAIR LADY and every other play, musical or film. As well as those pages about every other actor whose name is highlghted in red.

There’s very little hyperbole, and it’s been there for years that way. And if you don’t like the verbage then rewrite it. I just want it to be updated and accurate.

But I am not a Wikipedia editor and don’t know how to do all the rest, the references and such.

And if you are being so literal and in fear of IMDB then why is it listed as a reference for every other actor in the business?

Copyright law doesn't prohibit us from using a copyrighted source as a reference. Including the names of shows from IMDb is fine. too. What is not OK is including many whole sentences from a copyrighted source, which was the case here. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:08, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

How do I include a citation?

Hello Larry,

I received your message from located on the attached link. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:148.77.75.34&diff=cur

Apparently the updates I made were canceled because I need to provide a reliable source. How do I include a citation, and re-add the updates? I need guidance on the referencing for beginners tutorial. Also, how can I speak with you (talk) on the telephone - and add you to my watch list to see your reply?

For reference, my edit page is located on the attached link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Coleman_(sailor)

Thank you,

Paul 202-255-2000 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 148.77.75.34 (talk) 15:50, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello, Paul. Instructions on adding references are given at Help:Referencing for beginners. I'm sorry, but I prefer to communicate on Wikipedia rather than offline, so I don't accept offers to speak on the phone. The watchlist function is limited to users who have created an account, but that makes me wonder, are you the editor who was previously editing as PaulColemanUSA? If so, you should log in to that account. Cordless Larry (talk) 17:16, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

I need guidance to include a citation

Hello Larry,

(a) I received your reply to my question related to the updates I made that were canceled because I need to provide a reliable source. With respect to instructions on adding a reference, how do I include a citation - and re-add the updates? I need guidance to include a citation.

(b) How do I add you to my watchlist function to see your reply?

(c) With respect to your question related to me boeing the editor who was previously edited as PaulColemanUSA, yes – that is me. I will be sure to log into that account.

Best regards,

Paul — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paulcoleman (talkcontribs) 17:41, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello again, Paulcoleman. I'm not sure why you have created a new account rather than using the PaulColemanUSA one, but anyway... I gave a link to the instructions for adding references above, but as you are the subject of the article you are trying to expand, you should stick to suggesting changes on the talk page by following the instructions at Wikipedia:Simple COI request. You can add this page to your watchlist by clicking the star icon in the top-right of the screen. Cordless Larry (talk) 17:45, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello Larry,

I received your reply to my question related to the updates. As such, I have signed in with my username paulcoleman. Kindly note, my other username of PaulColemannUSA is basically the same. I think that I inadvertently created the second one. Is it advisable for me to delete one of these accounts? If so, how do I do that?

During the interim, I have followed the instructions at Wikipedia:Simple COI request to add references for the subject of the article that I am trying to expand, and I am following your advice of sticking with suggested changes on the talk page by following those instructions. As such, I have entered the suggested changes on the talk page for your reference. I hope this helps!

Please let me know what additional information I can provide to you for reliable source references to be included as a citation. I need your guidance to include a citation.

Best regards,

Paul — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paulcoleman (talkcontribs) 18:29, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

There is no way to delete an account, Paulcoleman, because all edits need to remain attributed to the editor who made them. Just make sure that you stick to using one account from now on, so that you are not accused of abusing multiple accounts. You don't seem to have made the request correctly, as it does not appear in your contribution history and there is nothing at Talk:Paul Coleman (sailor), which is where the request belongs. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:27, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
I see what you've done: you placed the request at User talk:148.77.75.34#Edit request (you also forgot to include the edit request template). You'll need to do it again at Talk:Paul Coleman (sailor), following every step of the instructions. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:33, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello Larry,

I received your reply to my question related to the updates. As such, I have followed the instructions for the second time at Wikipedia:Simple COI request to add references for the subject of the article that I am trying to expand, and I am following your advice of sticking with suggested changes on the talk page by following those instructions. As such, I have entered the suggested changes on the talk page for your reference. I hope this helps! For some reason in my first attempt I did not seem to have made the request correctly. Apparently it did not appear in my contribution history, and evidently there was nothing at Talk:Paul Coleman (sailor), which is where the request belongs. Could you please tell me it the second attempt to make the request was submitted correctly, and can you please tell me if the request appears correctly as it belongs at Talk:Paul Coleman (sailor)?

Please let me know what additional information I can provide to you for reliable source references to be included as a citation. I need your guidance to include a citation.

Hello again, Paulcoleman. The request has already been responded to. Everything you want to add will need to have a reference. Newspaper articles are likely to be the most promising source in your case (or maybe specialist sailing magazines?), but information on what is considered reliable is given at WP:RS. Note that sources do not have to be available online. Only once sources have been provided will the material be added to the article. It is best to keep future discussion of this at Talk:Paul Coleman (sailor) rather than here, as I am not the editor dealing with your request. Cordless Larry (talk) 07:54, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

thank you

Dear Larry,

Thank you for your reply. Your patience and understanding is very much appreciated. As requested, I will provide references (newspaper sources, or promising specialist sailing magazines).

Please note, this reliable information will be given at <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Identifying_reliable_sources>. When these material sources are provided, I will then add the material to the article.

Again, many thanks!

Yours sincerely,

Central London and bikes

You do not see anything like this around the tube stations at central London (the number of bikes)

The only cyclists at Oxford Street, Regents Street, outside the Parliament / Westminster Abbey, Soho, City of London or even around Imperial War Museum I ever seen, are messengers working. I spoke with a man at a post office close to Russel Square, he made complaints about the high flat rents. He also told me "if I moved to East End, it would be cheaper, but then the transports to work would become equally higher". I then just briefly suggested "what about a bike". He just laughed a little, and didn't wished to be killed. There are many cyclists in the north, easst, south and far west - but not in City of London , Westminster etc. Especially not if comparing to many other Capital Cities in Europe.
We are obligated to describe what is, not exaggerate. Compare with Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, Hamburg etc - and you 'll see, there are very few cyclists in London's most central parts. It's a really lovely city anyway. Thanks. Boeing720 (talk) 12:49, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

That may be so, Boeing720, but Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable sources, not personal experience and anecdote. See WP:VERIFY. Cordless Larry (talk) 14:28, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
You're correct regarding the examples I gave here above. But just the fact that London presents a guide to bikeroads suggests in itself there is a problem. In most other large cities (which are flat enough and hasn't got long and cold winters), bikeroads are almost just as common as pavements/sidewalks. London grew early and has never had its streets reconstructed, like Paris. Compared to its size, the streets in central London in general, are narrow. That's easy to verify. Boeing720 (talk) 20:14, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
Great - please do add something about this with sources if you have them, Boeing720. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:36, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
Boiled down my last reply - The fact that London presents a guide to bikeroads suggests in itself there is a problem. You don't agree ? Boeing720 (talk) 20:47, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
I'm afraid I don't understand your point. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:50, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
Oh, I see what you mean. Maybe, but you still need a source if you want the article to say that not many people cycle in central London. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:51, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
Now I have used verifiable and reliable sources. But my first version of Central London and bikeroads (or lack of), still was better. Thanks Boeing720 (talk) 00:43, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Opinion request

Hope you are well. Was wondering if I can get your opinion regarding potential canvassing issue, particularly this message [2]. Despite the content of the message seemingly being about a separate subject, it is possibly pertinent to the discussion over at Talk:Somalis. The editor being asked to "contact me when you read this" is possibly a relative of the Warsangali leader Soupforone is attempting to reinsert into the article, per their own claim ("My own ancestors and/or relatives on my paternal side used to rule large swathes of eastern and parts of central Somaliland via the Warsangali sultanate") [3] also ("I'm Warsangali and Dashishe on my father's side [...] and my mother is Majeerteen with some Marehan and Ogaden") [4]. Given the discussion involving the Warsangali leader on the Somalis page, as well as the ongoing issue at [5], all related to supposedly the relatives of editor receiving the message, the timing of message and "contact me when you read this" line are cause for concern. Could this be considered canvassing? Or would it only be considered that if they support canvasser in said discussions (if at all)? Best wishes --Kzl55 (talk) 15:52, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

I think the message is too vague and unrelated to be considered canvassing, Kzl55. Whether canvassing will happen if the editor replies off-Wikipedia is another matter, of course, but that is a general problem across Wikipedia, which I don't think we have an answer to. Cordless Larry (talk) 15:58, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
I see, that makes sense. The combination of who the message was sent to (and their relation to dispute), the vague wording of the message (as well as the explicit 'contact me' note), and the timing of the message where a cause for concern for me. Though I agree it is very difficult to police such issues. Many thanks for getting back to me Larry. Best wishes --Kzl55 (talk) 16:30, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

Opinion request

Hope you are well Larry. Wanted to get your opinion on this post [6]. I have posted it a couple of days ago and it still has no responses and was wondering if the pinging worked at all. Also, any advice on how to take it further, i.e. would it be more suitable as its own standalone report instead of being part of the discussion pertaining to the Somalis article? Especially since it references previous behaviour on WP as well as Commons. If you had seen it and was not able to reply there for any reason absolutely no worries. Best wishes --Kzl55 (talk) 13:14, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

Sorry, Kzl55, but I have been rather busy with off-Wikipedia business. I think that the AN/I thread probably needs to be resolved by administrators. I don't see any reason to start another thread when the existing one is still being discussed. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:15, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
Absolutely no worries, appreciate you getting back. Did you get a ping from that post? I have also pinged admins but did not hear back yet and was wondering if the form I used { {Reply} } worked (VS { {Replyto} }). I thought having a separate report might be suitable seeing as it is about specific disruptive behaviour by the editor that involves other WP sites as well, seeing that the discussion at hand is about the section/article and looks to be developing to involve the whole Somali project, my worry is that the post gets lost in the replies. --Kzl55 (talk) 19:44, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
Yes, I did get a ping, Kzl55. I think at the time I decided to wait for an admin to respond, and just keep an eye on the discussion rather than posting an immediate reply. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:27, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
I see, so it worked. No worries at all Larry, appreciate you getting back as always! Best wishes --Kzl55 (talk) 21:38, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

Your wisdom and guidance and possible intervention for AfD

Could you take a look at the contributions of the following admin user:NatGertler They've been adding AfD tags on articles that pertain to actor/producer Bryan Earl Kreutz. This page has a long running talk for notability on the AFD page. This is in no way an attack on them, just a concern as it is pertaining to deletion not tags for correction. They've continued even after an editor politely asked them to further clarify references on the deletion for the aforementioned Bryan Earl Kreutz. It appears it has a predictable SNOW result that contravening MfD is unacceptable., could you consider intervening? The links for notability are from verifiable independent sources and newspaper writers and are archived on websites because they are a few years old, as such since they are not on the original newspaper website, the articles are being called Copyright violations. I have other ways of uploading the articles to prove they are not Copyright violations. I'm wondering can the references be uploaded to an inbox or the AfD articles be re-written as a project or something done here?

In addition to the Bryan Earl Kreutz page, the 2 other pages i'm referring to with Bryan Kreutz are as follows: To Inflict, The article has 2 verifiable sources that were older and retrieved last on 2013-09-08. One of the sources showed it in a notable story on the Indie Fest USA website and is no longer there because the website updated their latest films for the festival, his film was from 2013.

The next page is Up on High Ground. I'm asking if you could please restore the page or point me to someone who can as I and a number of others had contributed to it since it was created over 2 years ago and I would like to continue improving it.

Any thoughts about whether both To Inflict or Up on High Ground (TV series) could qualify for semi-protection? Additionally to be considered to be added here Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard or if they can be fairly assessed by other top notch admins without this user:NatGertler and other admin friends they bring in to make rash decisions to back them up and ultimately move to AfD? I'm asking advice as this page seems to be a possiblity? I just don't know where we should go. Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion ?

Lastly I feel this administrator has erred in closing a deletion discussion or in applying AFD tags, and I've contacted them directly and been ignored. Should I go before the Wikipedia:Deletion review, rather than Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion ? Techform (talk) 22:54, 20 February 2018 (UTC)Techform (talk) 22:49, 20 February 2018 (UTC) TechForm (talk) 12:54, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

As I noted on the other page where you posted this, I am not an administrator. Also, I did not put the AFD tag on Bryan Earl Kreutz, that would be reddogsix (talk · contribs); I did put a PROD on it. I did not put an AFD tag on On Higher Ground, I'm not even the editor who put the speedy deletion tag on it. Oh, and I did not put any tag on To Inflict, nor did I do any editing there. Nor have I brought any other editor nor any administrator to do anything to any of these pages. --Nat Gertler (talk) 06:25, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
Also, your contacting me directly did not include any query that needed to be answered, so the lack of a response should come as no shock. And I've not closed any deleting discussion. I've never closed an AfD in my long involvement in Wikipedia. --Nat Gertler (talk) 06:51, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
In the interest of accuracy, I will note that I did add one AFD tag to a Kreutz-related article... back in 2011. --Nat Gertler (talk) 20:04, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
I'm not sure why you have chosen me to approach about this matter, Techform, but I note that you have asked a number of other editors the same questions on their talk pages, so I should make you aware that you need to be careful not to be seen to be canvassing or forum shopping. Anyway, the place to make a case for keeping the Bryan Earl Kreutz article is Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bryan Earl Kreutz. Tiko Kerr

Hi Cordless Larry,

I don't understand what you mean that I need to add a reliable source. I am Tiko Kerr and all I am doing is providing more information on where I was born, referencing my parents and their influence on my becoming an artist. I also included that my education is from the University of Calgary.

Am I supposed to supply proof of my degree? Please let me know what it is you are asking for.

Thank you for you time. Tiko Kerr — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tiko Kerr (talkcontribs) 22:51, 8 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello Tiko Kerr. Because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, it should only contain information summarised from existing, published sources. That means that we can only include information in the article about you if sources exist to support that material - we can't just take your word that it is true. Please see Wikipedia:Verifiability for a further explanation. Cordless Larry (talk) 08:11, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

ILOOK page

Hi, I created a page for a digital forensics tool ILOOK which has been deleted. I based the page on the following pages that are similar tools and are already on Wikipedia so I am not sure where I went wrong as I thought the description was factual rather than promotional:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EnCase https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forensic_Toolkit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sleuth_Kit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registry_Recon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PTK_Forensics https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HashKeeper https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xplico

I think I only referenced information that is on the web already.

I was intending to add some other new tools to keep Wikipedia up to date so any advice would be helpful - thanks P1127 (talk) 13:14, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello, P1127. You'll see that several of those articles are tagged for issues including promotionalism, so they probably shouldn't be taken as models to emulate. I also noted that the article you created appeared to be a copy of this, and I'm not sure what the copyright status of text on that wiki is. To understand more about how to write a neutral article, I suggest taking a look at Wikipedia:Your first article. If you want to have another try, then it is best to write a draft that you can submit for review by experienced editors, following the instructions on that page. That way, it is much less likely to be deleted. Cordless Larry (talk) 13:40, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll have a look and try again. I didn't see any tags on the EnCase and Forensics Toolkit pages which were the main inspiration and I thought I was following their example. It is concerning that tagged pages are still there if they are breaking the same rules as my posting. The article on the Forensikswiki is under the Creative Commons licence, i.e. Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format and Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially.P1127 (talk) 14:46, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

I couldn't see a statement about a Creative Commons license, P1127, but I would suggest writing a draft in your own words, based on the published sources. I will take a look at those articles when I get time. I have already successfully nominated Registry Recon for speedy deletion. Cordless Larry (talk) 14:50, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Thanks.

This is from the Main Page of ForensicsWiki :

This is the Forensics Wiki, a Creative Commons-licensed wiki devoted to information about digital forensics (also known as computer forensics). We currently list a total of 861 pages.

I'll try a re-write and go to the developer's site to see if they have any useful external links. P1127 (talk) 14:58, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Bye the way - I think the Microsoft COFFEE application died some time ago but that still seems to be referenced in several places. Most of the digital forensics stuff needs updating but I'll have to try a bit at a time. P1127 (talk) 15:03, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for left the comment on my talk page. I just wondering how can I be the guest of 'teahouse'. --H.S Warren K 21:23, 23 March 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Howd Warren (talkcontribs)

Hello, Howd Warren. I see that you have already asked a question at Wikipedia:Teahouse#Hello, which makes you a guest in my mind, but if you would like to formalise it, there's an "Introduce yourself" button at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Guests. Pressing that allows you to add yourself to the list of guests. We also need to fix your signature, to stop that bot from following you around. Your signature needs to include at least one link to your user pages. Usually, this problem is fixed by unchecking the "Treat the above as wiki markup" option in the signature section of Special:Preferences. Can you give that a try? Cordless Larry (talk) 14:20, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

I just changed my option. And thank you for your kindness to gave me an advice which makes me stop deal with the bot. Anyway, I will be the guest of teahouse that would help me to know Wikipedia better. Have a good Wiki-day! --H.S Warren K (talk) 20:46, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

Your Request for Adminship

Extended content

Thanks for submitting your RFA. While I applaud enthusiasm, I'm afraid you do not yet possess sufficient knowledge/experience for the community to have confidence in your readiness to become an admin. You may find the following advice helpful. If you have not done so already, please read:

A few thoughts:
  • Generally, It has been my experience that it takes at least 3,000,000 edits in a variety of areas to learn policy and guidelines well enough to attempt adminship. Also, nominees returning after an unsuccessful RfA should wait at least another 3,000,000 edits and 3000 months before trying again. Nominees need to show the ability to contribute a number of significant edits to build the encyclopedia.
  • The Admin tools allow the user to block and unblock other editors, delete and undelete pages and protect and unprotect pages. Nominees will therefore do well to gain experience and familiarity with such areas as WP:AIV, WP:AFD, WP:CSD, Wikipedia:Protection policy, and WP:BLOCK to learn when to do these things.
  • Adminship inevitably leads one to 1) need to explain clearly the reasons for one's decisions, 2) need to review one's decisions and change one's mind when it is reasonable to do so, 3) need to review one's decisions and stand firm when it is reasonable to do so, 4) need to negotiate a compromise. Admins need a familiarity with dispute resolution. The ability to communicate clearly is essential.
  • Article building is the raison d'être of Wikipedia. I recommend significant participation in WP:GA or WP:FA as the surest way to gain article building experience. I find a large number of "Wikignome" type edits to be helpful.
  • I recommend taking part in RfA discussions to help learn from the experiences of others. Hope this helps. Good luck and happy editing.
  • My suggestion would be to withdraw and try again in another 3000 months and 3,000,000 edits.

Regards, — xaosflux Talk 17:12, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

Helpful stuff for time zones

There's a script, User:Gary/comments in local time.js that you can add to Special:MyPage/common.js. It works out the timezone from your browser and converts all UTC dates into local ones. As it effectively syncs to your local computer, it means it caters with GMT / BST switches automatically. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:22, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

Past article creator

I noticed Cellphonevilla while reviewing new articles, and my suspicions were roused when I saw the article came from a new editor yet had maintenance templates attached to it. I saw that you deleted the article today, so can I ask which editor created the version of the article you deleted? I think a warning about sock puppetry may be in order if these two accounts are somehow linked. SamHolt6 (talk) 02:49, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

A question

As you are a recent administrator, I would like to ask you for some advice. I am very excited to be a Wikipedian, but I am not sure where or how to start. Do you have any advice for me as to how to get my start? I just feel a bit nervous about whether I mess up or not, so I would like a bit of advice. I await a response with great patience, and I hope you can help me so that I can find my own path within Wikipedia. Thank you. UnsungKing123 (talk) 16:34, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

Welcome, UnsungKing123. I will leave you a proper welcome message on your talk page, with links to pages that you will find helpful. They will hopefully give you some ideas for how you can contribute. If you are nervous about making mistakes, perhaps get some practice in by creating User:UnsungKing123/Sandbox and trying things out there. Once you have made a few edits there, look at the history tab for the page and you will see how you can undo ("revert") your edits if you make mistakes. If you are looking for a more concrete suggestion, adding references to poorly sourced articles is always a worthwhile activity. See Help:Referencing for beginners for guidance on how to do this. Sock back?

Soupforone was banned for socking but i think he is back editing his favorite addition regarding leo africanus bit on Adal Sultanate article. The User:Bayesedam seems to think Troyoleg is Soupforone. Can you look into it? 82.131.85.18 (talk) 18:56, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Hmm. Well, Bayesedam has himself been blocked for sockpuppetry. What evidence is there regarding Troyoleg? Pinging TomStar81, Drmies, Ben MacDui and Nick-D, who helped resolve Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Middayexpress. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:09, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
I note that Soupforone's last edits were on 3 April, which is the same date that the Troyoleg account was created. Cordless Larry (talk) 19:13, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
  • @Drmies: As usual, I can't follow any of this conversation. All I will say is there is no evidence that Troyoleg, despite using very suspicious IPs, is a sock. If you want more, you're going to have to e-mail me.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:25, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
  • Bbb, there is plenty of cause to run CU, and I did; I cannot easily interpret the results, but you can, since you blocked at least one of the accounts under the various IPs used by the account. Run it and you'll see. As always, I thank you for your service, and so do a ton of other Wikipedians. Drmies (talk) 01:42, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
  • If you mean the IP where I blocked a lot more than one sock, those socks aren't even remotely related behaviorally to Troyoleg. They just happen to be using the same proxy. I like how editors share proxies, so collaborative and convivial. If you mean something else, then you'll have to tell me what it is.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:46, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

Based on the page history, soupforone has been battling socks atleast since january on the page. The socks are most likely Bayesedam's who just got blocked, his older sock rockvoid made this edit [7] which soupforone reverted. im assuming since soupforone got blocked the sock of rockvoid on april 5th returned with another account this time Swoonsaxes and tried to make the same edit, [8] thus soupforone may have quickly created an account and reverted him. [9] soupforone and tryoleg both remove this phrase "were Habar Magādle who were Habar Awal, Garhajis, Arap and Ayub all part of Isāq clan" I think the removal of this again by a new user, made rockvoids sock, bayesedam call out soup. [10] 85.76.51.136 (talk) 00:26, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

@IP, I'd like to know who you are.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:41, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
I note that it was Soupforone who added the material on Leo Africanus that Troyoleg is restoring. The number of blocked editors in the article's recent history is worrying. Cordless Larry (talk) 07:09, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

Drmies and Bbb23, I note that Troyoleg has recently restored the content of History of Bantus in Maine, which was originally written largely by the sockmaster Middayexpress. Cordless Larry (talk) 16:22, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

Troyoleg and Soupforone are Red X Unrelated.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:37, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
Keep in mind too that under the updated editing restrictions for middayexpress et al, admins can take action against to protect the pages being editing by suspected socks so if you can't prove that one account is tied to a sock then we can protect an article or do something else of that nature to help keep unwanted socks of the article(s). Don't forget about that. TomStar81 (Talk) 07:07, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for doing that, JKen. It looks like you got everything correct - well done. South Australian State Emergency Service

Hi Larry

Thank you very much for saving my article from deletion! I admit, I've not had a lot of time to work on it lately, though I do still look over my scrapbook of newspaper clippings from time to time.

It's proving very difficult to find independent sources. As the SASES is a government funded volunteer organisation it seems all I can find is either published by the State or merely mentions the SASES ... It's also somewhat frustrating that our sister organisation, the South Australian Country Fire Service have a page with just 3 references. & our interstate equivalent Victoria State Emergency Service have even less...

Is there any further advice you can give me?

Kind regards --KaiRAWR (talk) 06:29, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

I had a look for sources myself, KaiRAWR, and I found the same: lots of mentions but not much by way of in-depth, independent coverage. Can I suggest that you ask at the Teahouse for suggestions on finding sources and on what might count as significant coverage in this situation? The other two articles you mention pre-date the introduction of the draft review process. If the article that you are trying to write cannot be accepted and those two topics also lack significant coverage, then the articles should probably be deleted, but hopefully it doesn't come to that.
