Arizona Coyotes, Gila River Arena and related page discussions

Hey Zzyzx11, thank you for your messages. Complete beginner in figuring out how to be a valued contributor. Want to use my knowledge of sports and sports business topics to especially those articles.

My recent edits were based on resources I haven't figured out yet how to list, but doing a few formatted edits on the fly while learning. But I don't want to create an accuracy issue.

Gila River Arena name change was approved by the Glendale City Council on September 9, 2014 at 6:48 PM Mountain Standard Time. Video link to meeting may be available at GlendaleAZ.com at the time of this note.

Additionally, the Arizona Sting information was originally updated after looking at the NLL sites and statistical pages. This was in regards to the time they actually ceased operations.

Still need to learn ASAP how to site references, including any reordering of them in corresponding to the correct source articles.

The Gila River Arena name change press conference is scheduled for September 10th at 12:00 PM Arizona time, so I can insert the appropriate edits for you later in the evening, including revised versions of what edits you had undone.

I can do the same in linking Gila River Arena information to related pages for the Arizona Coyotes, Arizona Rattlers, Phoenix Suns and US Airways Center.

The November-December 2012 discussion was actually not closed as "no consensus"; it was closed as "maintain status quo (option B)". (Same effect as "no consensus" but not phrased as "no consensus"; can be read as a positive endorsement of status quo.)

Siskiyou County

When you "reverted all the edits on the Siskiyou template", did you perchance save the several towns that have wikipages that weren't included on your template before? The town names that were on the page really didn't match the ones in the template and I spent quite a bit of time sorting it all out. I'm sorry it wasn't to your liking, there were no instructions on the template talk page - indeed there was nothing on there - but at least I left you a list of all the towns, CDPs and unincorporateds. Would you take a look at all the communities please and be sure that none got left off that should not be? Since I don't have your experience in this regard, your checking the facts that remain being accurate would be most appreciated. 04:20, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

@Ellin Beltz: - I have included only the links to existing articles from your list, and not the "red links". As I stated on the talk page, this is a navigation box for navigation between existing pages, and should not really be a full list that includes every single "red link" that is unlikely to be created within the next month (see the second paragraph of WP:REDNOT). However, as I also stated on the talk page, the "populated place" phrase is too general because sources seem to also classify cities as "populated places". Photomontage, opinion

Greetings Zzyzx11: I see the photo montages you've been adding to various places including Humboldt County, California. I do not think this montage is as informative or useful as a single photo at the top of the article. The montages make very small pictures in an area which was already small, making it nearly impossible to see on a computer, let alone my phone or tablet. (Yes, I looked on all three platforms, on the phone it is an unintelligible blur.) I think the montage reduces the educational benefit of the image in the infobox and suggest you make photo galleries instead. I have not yet reverted this edit as you listed it as a test edit. I would request that at least for Humboldt County, you return it to an image that is big enough to see on all platforms. Thank you! Ellin Beltz (talk) 23:26, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

@Ellin Beltz: - Feel free to revert it. As you saw in the edit summary, it is a test edit. Some people like these montages, and some don't. See the debate on Talk:San Francisco/Archive 7#Is there something wrong with collages? for example. After such montages were successfully put on pages such as New York City, Chicago and Washington, D.C., a couple of people supported having one on the San Francisco page as well, but others were against that. I'm not against all montages, per se. My concern is that the images in the Humboldt one (see your Mendocino edit for contrast) are so small that they become unrecognizable and thus detract rather than add to the article. I live here and I had trouble figuring out what the pictures represented. I did revert your edits, and I also removed the image "One Log House" because that building is in Mendocino County, not Humboldt! Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 18:12, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

Sigh. Considering that three of them are consistently using lower-case, one would think that it would be enough to establish that "super-G" is not a proper noun. How often do you really see real proper nouns written in lower-case? It's the other way around that most often is the problem. But allright, I'll see if I can add more sources.

RM - stadium name change

A RM for Rangers Ballpark in Arlington was recently closed without moving, based in part on the notion that Globe Life Park was not demonstrated to be the WP:COMMONNAME. The OTHER David Hernandez (poet)

Regarding this edit, you are absolutely correct, the hatnote should not have been there. But I did some homework and the Chicago poet has been written about in several books. At the time of his death, he was known as the "unofficial Poet Laureate of Chicago." I've started a draft about this person. For now it's at User:Davidwr/David Hernández (Chicago). Thanks for inspiring me to investigate.

Emmy picture

I suppose most people wouldn't notice, but the picture that was previously in the Emmy Award article (File:EmmyAward.png) is a "generic" Emmy picture with a blank label section, whereas the one you replaced it with (File:Emmy statuette.jpg) is an example of a Primetime Emmy. Since the Emmy Award article is about all types of Emmys, I wonder if the other picture wasn't a better choice. (Also, you may note that I partly reverted another of your edits on that page, since the way you wrote it seemed to introduce potentially non-neutral editorial commentary that seemed to assert that the NATAS Tech & Eng awards are more important than the ATAS Primetime Engineering awards.) —Mulligatawny (talk) 12:31, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

Feel free to revert that too, but as you mentioned, there is really no informational difference to the average reader. The Emmy statuette is really the same, no matter what ceremony it is presented in. The only difference is zooming in on the plaque engraved on each statuette's base, listing its winner, award category, ceremony, and so forth. Because File:EmmyAward.png is marked as a non-free fair use image, it is restricted by the policies on Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, while File:Emmy statuette.jpg is not and can be used in various other Emmy-related articles. Robin Williams

Thanks for catching this! - I'm wondering if it's a good idea to still list Williams but just clarify. In many cases people are thought of "living" in a community if they have a mailing address with the city name even if it's outside the city limits. In the Houston area there are many areas with Katy, Texas mailing addresses but the actual city of Katy is small WhisperToMe (talk) 18:39, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

There is confusion by non-US readers when they see "unincorporated" in the cited source, but the Tiburon article states it is "incorporated". If I can cite a source stating the exact home address, it can be combined with a US Census Bureau map of the town of Tiburon and that is enough to determine whether something is in the city limits WhisperToMe (talk) 18:55, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
Apparently an IP posted an edit request on Talk:Robin Williams#Add exact address, but it was unsourced. If I look that specific address up, Google maps shows that it is in Paradise Cay, California. If that is in fact the correct address, I'm curious about how you would word that on the Tiburon, California page. Most unincorporated communities in California have specific names (and thus often have separate existing Wikipedia articles), like Paradise Cay. I'm not sure that is the same in Texas. Sorry, I have not been online until now. For any technical issues or bugs, I would have hoped that you had tested thoroughly on Template:Infobox venue/sandbox before making it live. There are other editors with the template editor permission that have it on their watchlists. So far, it looks like Frietjes found a bug, and was able to correct it.[2] I have not seen any other complaints or issues since I applied the protection (almost 23 hours later) As for any issues regarding the cosmetic changes you boldly added while merging the templates (such as moving the Tenants section above the Construction section) that would most likely need further discussion to determine consensus instead of a need for a quick edit. I'm also concerned about your edits to the template, adding additional postmile support. We only use postmiles when state mileages are unavailable, because postmiles are nearly useless for the general reader, and also cannot be converted to kilometers. Do you remember Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/AS92813/Archive? I suspected Rt31914 from the start when he first moved some stadium articles a few days ago using similar comments as the socks of AS92813, but needed him to make further edits to confirm my suspensions and block him. And that on Forever End was it. I'm surprised though that he either failed to notice or chose to ignore the subtle hints and references I made on my previous comments on his talk page that I suspected him. Cheers. If you noticed, I set Forever Red to semi-protection to limit his IPs. That is the best I can do. If I do full, that will do collateral damage to regular users. It is better to indefinitely block sleeper sock accounts that get through. Zzyzx11 (talk) 18:55, 24 August 2014 (UTC)
I've just been dealing with so many other sockfarms in the past few days I've lost track. The guy who thinks there are people with conflicts of interest with editors of some article I never heard of and claims to be a viking. The guy who wants everyone to be sure that Taiwan should be called "Republic of China (Taiwan)" and that it's a sovereign state with 103 years of independence. GeoGroup

I'm not certain what you are testing here. I am not of the opinion that adding coordinates benefits that table, but I admit to curiousity as to the purpose behind it. Resolute 00:50, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Template:GeoGroup is used to generate a raw generic map of all the coordinates on an article of section, in KML format, that can be exported to Google Maps, Bing and other similar applications. If you click on the first link in the {{GeoGroup}} box on the page now, "Map of all coordinates from Google", Google Maps will then display all the coordinates from that section (in this case, all the NHL teams) on the map. This is an alternative to logging into Google Maps and creating a map directly from there, which someone did to make a map of KHL teams (and a link to that map was added to the bottom of Kontinental Hockey League#Teams). It provides an additional free map in a different format that others can export, use and modify. Not everyone has or knows how to use an image editor, but everyone can access Google Maps, Bing and others. And no, I do not think it will work if it is invisible. I was meaning to test this back in February before the GM column was added in March,[4] but never got around to do it until now. I noticed you reversed another editor's update for the reason that the proposed link to the person's name was missing. That is fairly common, there are numerous Wikipedia articles which meta link to non-existant pages, it is not usually considered to be a fatal flaw, it is often used as a holding place.

Many anonymous users tend to spam these "notable people" sections with original research, names that are not-notable, or cannot be verified. Blocking my account from editing articles will not solve the disputes noted above but it will make the problem worse and may lead to legal battle (may not).

I decline. Per Wikipedia guidelines, the most common name used by reliable sources should be used, not the official name (see Wikipedia:Article titles#Use commonly recognizable names) Whatever is listed on the official web site is irrelevant. For example, http://variety.com/2014/tv/columns/david-muirs-journey-begins-on-abc-world-news-tonight-1201296423/ primarily only uses "ABC World News Tonight".
Furthermore, article titles should be as concise as possible, and consistent with other similar articles (see Wikipedia:Article titles#Deciding on an article title). Like the CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News articles, the current name of "ABC World News Tonight" is concise enough, because it contains information on both the weekday and weekend editions, and that is essentially the primary title used 7-days a week. I'm curious about this change. {{px}} supports a fallback size if none is specified, which was set to frameless, the default image thumbnail size. My understanding was that images shouldn't be manually downsized beyond this without due cause. Is there a particular reason to prefer 200px? @Thumperward:, whatever was happening on the several articles I was looking at after you made your alternations, the frameless was not working and all the images were rendering to their normal size (even if was over 1000px) and not a thumbsize. I only picked 200px because that was the default on the infobox before you made that edit. I re-saved your edits on Template:Infobox tram network/sandbox for now,[5] and when I currently test that on Special:ExpandTemplates with the code for Streetcars in New Orleans, for example, it renders the image File:FEMA - 20722 - Photograph by Robert Kaufmann taken on 12-21-2005 in Louisiana.jpg to its full 3300 width. Pending changes is specifically intended for infrequently edited articles. There is no evidence (at least that I am aware of) that pending changes "scares" IPs away from making a fix, pending a review. Furthermore my experience with sockpuppets is that about 9 months is not enough time (especially if it is one that may periodically monitor this very talk page...). Tennessee Titans colors

The Titans are switching their primary colored jerseys to navy blue beginning with the 2015 season, per Paul Kuharsky of ESPN and Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. I updated the NFL primary, NFL secondary raw and NFL tertiary raw color templates, however, I'm not sure if the NFL staff footer template also needs to be updated, which I believe only an NFL WikiProject administrator can edit. Several Titans' templates, including the main Tennessee Titans and Titans staff templates, still appear with the predominant light blue background, however, the infobox colors on the 2015 Tennessee Titans season article seem to be updated. Though light blue was the Houston/Tennessee Oilers primary color, navy is now the Titans' primary color.

@DPH1110:, Template:NFL staff footer does not need to be updated, as it draws data from the color template. The problem here is that the main team and staff templates do not specify a year on the calls to the color templates, so it automatically defaults to the current year. The current year is still 2014, so it is using the 2014 colors. Now, if you wait a couple of days until the clock strikes midnight, Jan 1 (UTC), it should automatically switch to the 2015 colors.   • Apologies, I honestly did not realize Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2014 December 27#Template:Infobox PAhistoric was still open. Per WP:TFDAI, if a discussion is more than seven days old it should be removed and closed; if it needs to be re-listed, that takes another seven days -- that should have been 14 days. So this discussion apparently has been open for almost a month. I have not closed TFD discussions in several years, so I'm surprised by the large backlog there. Therefore, I thought I could experiment with adding the PA designations to {{designation}}, and experimenting with {{infobox historic site}} by only changing two parameters,[7] and checking to make sure all material remained intact (also note that changing an article's infobox from one template to another is a totally different issue e.g. editors using to use {{geobox}} instead of {{infobox settlement}}). RM discussion

In response to your comments at the RM, typically I prefer for closure results to be performed, or requested in this case, by involved editors. My reasons include allowing any necessary discussion of the close (including any objections) before implementation, and reducing the chances of myself becoming involved in the dispute. This has never led to any problems for RfCs I've closed, though this is the first time it has come up for an RM. I suppose that perhaps I could have anticipated this (an editor waits for a month and then the TR is disputed) given the slightly more formal structure in place for moves.

In any case: in my reading of RMNAC, there is no guidance offered on this, e.g. the paragraph you referenced is written as an if-then statement for which the "if" portion isn't met. Likewise, I'm willing to file the close request and do the cleanup, as RMCI says; I just assume that editors will request it as necessary. I've been writing an FAQ for me to link in my closes and have been thinking of including this as a question. There's also, as far as I'm aware, no requirement to use {{db-move}} (which I actually have a strong aversion to, since last I checked it prevents readers from following a redirect while it's active).

TBH my reasons don't really apply in this case, so there's no real reason I couldn't have gone ahead and filed the TR anyways - I did notice that after a week or so there had been no changes. That said, my (possibly idiosyncratic?) interpretation would be that as a general rule, if nobody follows up with the close it implies a low enough level of interest in the outcome that editors don't really mind either way. @Aidan721:: It was actually based on Template:Round16, with the addition of spaces for the seed numbers. As far as I know, the date/location feature above each match is primarily only used on bracket templates that are specifically designed for football single-elimination tournaments. Are you designing this specifically for a football single-elimination tournament? So far, I only see you using it for Super Eight (hockey) -- ice hockey. Therefore, I'm hesitant to add it since it would be inconsistent with, for example, Template:16TeamBracket-NHL Divisional (used on NHL playoff articles), and especially Template:8TeamBracket Championship (used on the Ice Hockey World Championships articles. In the NHL bracket it would be impossible to add the date and location with the series moving back and forth from two arenas. The IIHF World Championships could have it but is not needed. Discussion regarding NFL schedule tables

Hello. There is a discussion on WT:NFL as to whether or not to remove the kickoff times and networks from NFL teams' schedule tables after the end of a season, and I was wondering if you would like to participate in the discussion. Per WP:NOTTVGUIDE, I think it is only useful to keep the networks and times on a schedule table during and before a season, and after the 2015 NFL schedule is released next month (April). I started removing the networks and times from the schedule tables on all NFL teams' 2014 season articles, however, I had one edit (the 2014 Carolina Panthers season) reverted by a user who strongly opposes this idea. I might continue the process on further past seasons, but it is time consuming, and I fear that it might be a waste of time if edit warring occurs. It was heavily reported that the NBC show's name changed. But since people don't like it, particularly fans, I've made it low keyed by not having it so close to the top and adding a bunch of references.

What you are telling me is that "some administrators violate Wikipedia rules and impose a 1RR rule". This is lawlessness and should stop.

With the NBC article, I am not edit warring at all. I don't keep doing the same thing. I think of better ways to edit, even though it may be a similar idea. For example, I first did the edit on the info box but later thought some people may be mad at that.

Also look at the people who are mad. Most of them fail to use the talk page or explain or try (unlike me) to compromise. It is they who should be punished, even if it is 2 people taking turns to do the same thing.

Lastly, I don't edit only once a day. However, I think things through carefully so I might change an article infrequently even though I might look at it many times.

@Pmaster12:: Apologies, after check the page history, apparently Hernandez was added to the list in March 2012, after the game,[8] which appears to be unsourced. When it was added, his name was marked with two footnotes, one saying that he was named as a replacement due to injury or vacancy, and then the other for the Pats advancing to the Super Bowl. This notation usually happens when a starter pulls out of the Pro Bowl before the Conference Championship games, the replacement is then swiftly announced, but then he ends up having to pull out too after his club advances to the Super Bowl. But this apparently did not occur since the original starter, Rob Gronkowski, did not pull out until after NE won the AFC title game, which simultaneously made Hernandez ineligible. Resurrection of Southern California Task Force

After moving from Los Angeles County to Kern County to San Luis Obispo County, I am finally realizing that there is life in California outside of L.A. and San Francisco, where I lived and grew up. Oh, I have also lived in San Diego, San Bernardino, San Joaquin, Yolo and Sacramento counties, and I earned my undergraduate degree in Riverside County. I am trying to breathe life into the Southern California Task Force, and I hope you will join me. Bullets

Can you please undo all your ndash → bullet replacements? They are not proper lists as generated by the {{TFArecentlist}} and {{TFLrecentlist}} templates. 2015 Wimbledon Championships

Yes, but in the current sport template one of the examples is a current tennis tournament. It would seem that the entire purpose of this template is to tell potential editors that they should be aware that there may be many conflicting edits happening at the same time. "As an advisory to editors, it may also be used in those occasions that many editors (perhaps a hundred or more) edit an article on the same day." this tournament is also in the list of current sporting events.

@Jdavi333:, I'm still permitted to remove it when there is no longer significant activity during periods of such conflicting edits, like off days or the wee hours of the morning. The 2015 Major League Baseball season page rarely gets edited, as most of the activity is only on the daily standings templates, and that only gets updated during certain few hours of the day. Only TWO editors modified that page between the time you added it earlier today and when I took it down a few minutes ago. Otherwise, it does nothing other than be a mere 24/7 general disclaimer notice, constantly on 24/7 for several months, without any good informational consequence. User:Rschen7754/How I write good road articles

So you know, I've started the above page to explain how I'm cleaning up and rewriting the California road articles. (It is under construction, and I tend to skip around when writing how-to guides like this, so if you're going to make changes to a whole bunch of articles you might want to do it in batches, or do one at a time - or it could get really annoying really quickly).

I'm also hoping to get User:PhATxPnOY916 and User:WikiLeon on board too as the other (at least semi-) active California road editors. I was originally planning on doing the rewrites all by myself, but I realized that if I do that, I might not finish before 2025, and the finished product would probably be better with multiple people helping out. I'll try and get the first part of that up in a few minutes. By the way, on your edit to CA-7 [9] I do believe that the material added has to be cited, especially since it is a Good Article. I only made that modification because the IP who originally added that was only partially correct, and did not account for the previous incarnation of CA 7 that went up to the Oregon border. I myself would rather prefer to remove that content altogether: the {{for}} hatnote at the top of the article is sufficient, and this extra content with {{main}} gets a little redundant. I would be willing to continue helping out with the California road articles as much as I can, although most of my edits are usually confined to the Exit List/Major Intersections (or Junctions) list. Rewriting an entire article though might be beyond my expertise, as the only major rewrite I ever did was the California State Route 165 article, and that's just a very small, standard article. Good day sir - I'm writing to you today because someone at wikipedia is practicing favoritism regarding the extension DyingScene.com. I am unable to use this extension as a valid citation source due to the fact it was blacklisted over 7 years ago. How can DS not be considered a valid news source when sites like punknews.org and absolutepunk.net are? They do more interviews, album reviews, exclusive premieres and publish more original content then either of those sites. This week, an admin deleted a page I created because wiki will not accept DS as a valid source. Please instruct on what avenues we must pursue to get justice in this matter, thank you. I'm sure others have responded to you, and pointed out the archived discussion explaining that there was a time when numerous IPs and accounts spammed your site onto Wikipedia, and how that led to it being put on the blacklist. My take is this: you have admitted that you have a conflict of interest (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest). And of course, it is obviously in your best interest to have links on Wikipedia back to your site, since that has the potential to increase your web traffic, and thus have the opportunity to charge your advertisers more money or raise your website's profile and reputation. Editors and contributors who have a conflict of interest (financial or otherwise) undermine the public's confidence in Wikipedia as an independent resource, no matter what degree they are trying to add or remove from various Wikipedia articles. Thus, it would be better if a third party, not associated in any way with you or the the DyingScene.com website, to advocate for its removal off the blacklist. Thanks for your revert of the {{Current}} template to {{Current disaster}}, but, looking at the two versions side by side I think the IP editor does have a point. The 'disaster' version says "Although this article is updated frequently, " which is not happening. And 'Current' seems to be more for when a page is under intense editing, at least one experienced editor frequently removes them saying that. 220 of Borg 02:00, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm not sure how the wording on {{Current disaster}} became so different than {{Current}}. The original point of having a separate {{Current disaster}} was so it would also have a link to Wikipedia:Risk disclaimer, as readers in the path of such disasters may look at these articles to help them take safety precautions. I would probably like to remove the "this article is updated frequently" phrase, as that can be generally said about a large number of Wikipedia articles that do not need {{Current}}. On the other hand, I did recently propose adding "it may not reflect the most current information" to {{Current}}. And as for the "one experienced editor frequently removes them": if you referring to the person that comes to my mind, he sometimes checks {{Current disaster}} and the rest of the current templates too.
