- Thanks for the explanation on my talk page. I thought I had a reasonable knowledge of US Sport (or "Sports"!), and can't remember coming across the use of "finals". I just thought it was a mistake. I certainly knew the use of the term "Bracket" in the name of the template was US English. Now I know, I can do as you suggested, and where necessary, use the RD3 parameter. - Of course you realize that it gets turned on everytime someone other than yourself makes an edit to your discussion page, even if that edit is only minor. And editing as an anonymous IP address instead of creating an account may make the problem even worse because some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. Therefore, you may get messages that are not intended for you.
- On the other hand, if you did create an account, you would be able to customize the appearance and behavior of this website so the banner would be less annoying. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 18:45, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

request undeletion
This image which was supposedly on commons is not on commons. The version there is different, with the face blurred. It looks awful, and since there's no legal reason why the english wiki, hosted in the USA, needs to use the blurred version. For the reason of the difference, see Image talk:Family Forum march supporter.jpg#Version on Commons and bear in mind that WJBscribe is a lawyer (although is of course not dispensing "legal advice" here, but does know what he's talking about). San Francisco template
After adding the San Francisco government articles to the SF template, I was thinking of adding a row for prominent events in SF history (The Mission, the Gold Rush, the two Pretty Big Ones, the Longshore Strike, the Freeway Revolt, the Moscone/Milk assassinations, etc.), but I think it might make the template a bit too cluttered. What do you think of a separate sub-navigation bar for San Francisco history that would have room enough to incorporate smaller things like Black Bart, Fatty Arbuckle, Zodiac, the Zebra murders, Patty Hearst, 101 California, and pretty much everything up to Fajitagate? There are articles on all this stuff and more floating around on Wikipedia and just begging to be joined together somehow. --Dynaflow 23:24, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

It's not filled in, by any means, and items will need to be rearranged within the categories once all the relevant articles have been marshalled together. What do you think about the categorizations? The Stanley Cup
I noticed the pics you replaced. However, I have a question about the Glen Wesley one in the lead. Won't it be more effective (and to me, look better), if we cropped out Wesley and left only the Stanley Cup? Evilclown93 13:14, 9 April 2007 (UTC) Look here.
- You seem to have missed the whole point of that ongoing copyright debate concerning images that just depict sports trophies i.e. whether an image of just the Stanley Cup is actually fair use: a two-dimensional representation of a copyrighted sculpture, statue or any other three-dimensional work of art, and thus is a derivative work of art, and per US Copyright Act of 1976, § 106(2) who owns copyright of the original has the exclusive right to authorize derivative works. It looks like those who are pushing this deletion issued are taking the "better safe than sorry approach" i.e., if they do not have proof that it is free, then they want to deleted. Thanks for removing the images that violated the wikipedia policy on the fair use of copyrighted images. I was unsure of whether I should remove this since it did not appear to qualify as fair use, and additionally, it did not appear elsewhere on the previous Stanley Cup Playoffs articles. - You're welcome. I am curious how the layout of this page will evolve. The 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs article was the first such one on Wikipedia; 2005 was the canceled season, and 2004 and before there were not enough users who were committed to such a topic. As you can see on Talk:2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs, there was much discussion on the design of the layout. I am a bit surprised that no one has yet attempted to do what was put on Ice hockey at the 2006 Winter Olympics — an actual table or template similar to Template:Footballbox. - As stated on the selected anniversaries guidelines, births and deaths can only be used on centennials, etc. Since Charlie Chaplin was born in 1889, he would only be 118 years old. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 16:20, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Main
Hi there! I found some "selected anniversary" pages of last week that were still protected for being on the main page. I believe these should have been unprotected by now? >Radiant< 12:07, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, I would say that most of those 366 pages are still protected because nobody has bothered to unprotect them on a regular basis. Of course, many of these were protected and unprotected manually – before the main page vandalism on December 2006 as described here, here, here, and here led one admin to leave a message to the person who did unprotect them occasionally to stop doing it.
- This all led to what is now the "cascading protection" feature, but it also opened up another opportunity for vandalism. As described here, a vandal can transclude various articles on unprotected templates at 23:59 UTC, seconds before it falls under the main page. Once the clock strikes 0:00 UTC, these various articles will also automatically be cascade protected. See [3] for one example, and [4] and this page I had to delete for another. As a result, I try to protect the rotating main page templates for FA, SA, and POTD manually.
- I suppose, ever since the expiry time feature was implemented, I could use that. How does that sound? Zzyzx11 (Talk) 16:20, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

I was thinking - wouldn't it be nice to add the following:
to the main page of Wikipedia? Perhaps for the next few days? I got the idea from the following: Memory-Alpha which i frequently visit. - I cannot remember exactly where they are posted in the various archived discussions, but the only time I can recall seeing a message similar like that was after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake happened. But keep in mind that affected several countries. Even a suggestion after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was shot down by some of the thousands of other users who do not live in the USA or those that complain that Wikipedia is "too USA-centric". Wikipedia is not a memorial. With all due respect, I personally would rather not go down a slippery slope where we post a "community's thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of the victims of X" every time a disaster or tragic event happens around the world. Interested in hosting a bot?
Since you're an admin on both Wikipedia and Commons, I wonder if you might be interested in hosting a MainPage image protection bot. As I see it, the bot would only need to put mprotected on MainPage images and then set a 24 hour protection at Commons. I'm not a programming person, so I couldn't do this myself, but I believe that this is something that could be done with relative ease. What do you think? Would you be interested in hosting a bot if we could get someone to write it? Should we put up something at Wikipedia:Bot requests? Thanks.--Pharos 07:26, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- A number of issues, not in any particular order:
- You may want to contact User:Dragons flight to see if he still has his source code for ProtectionBot, which he designed as a possible solution to protect main page templates and images. Although the comments on the RFA of ProtectionBot eventually led to User:Werdna writing the cascading protection feature, ProtectionBot did have the ability to upload images locally from Commons.
- Based on this discussion among others, there is a growing percentage of Commons users who would prefer that we stop directly protecting the commons version and exclusively use {{c-uploaded}}. Therefore, the ideal bot would have to actually save and upload images. Because of cascading protection on the main page, the bot does not really need to protect these.
- I know that at least one admin, User:David Levy, regularly likes to "m-crop" images on the FA and SA templates so they are almost perfect 100x100px squares. Should the bot be able to do that too, or should it protect the original version anyway just in case someone does not "m-crop" it?
- For images actually stored here on Wikipedia, I am not sure the bot really needs to add {{mprotected}} because of cascading protection. I cannot remember exactly where it is in the archived discussion, but I remember reading somewhere that you do not need to add a protection tag on every single page, template, or image that goes under a cascading protection. Therefore, I think the bot's only primary task would be to check if the image is either stored here on Wikipedia or on Commons.
- Finally, I am not sure I should host the bot because my computer is not on 24/7, due to various reasons. Either someone else should, or there should be clones (like how User:MartinBot is a clone of User:AntiVandalBot).

- No big problem.. It's just that "MVP", "Man of the match", and all those individual awards pages are, in my opinion, for the most part legit in being individual articles. I agree many "MVP" pages should be featured as sections in the main MVP article, perhaps even the "Man of the match" playing a part in each respective article. But "man of the match" quite simply refers to a match, whereas MVPs are usually a full-season award, or an award for a very special series or game. I just feel that there should be overlap on this one, as it's not a clear-cut subject. Investigate the {{main}} template if you don't know what I'm talking about. Re: NFL Project
No problem (makes sense, too). Tomorrow, when I have more time, I plan on fixing/adding tags through all the categories you have listed on the project page (but I don't have the patience just yet to tackle the Category:Unassessed National Football League articles :). - Is there any way to modify the National Football League categories for a "List-Class National Football League Articles" category is created, and that with the template and category classes are added to the "National Football League articles by quality" category? For example, List of National Football League stadiums is assessed as a list but is still categorized as "Unnassessed." Pats1 15:14, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
- The WikiProject tag is using the standard wikicode based on the standard quality scale classes that are listed on WP:COUNCIL/AFAQ#Quality scale. AFAIK, a seperate "List-Class" category has never been created and used in any other WikiProject, as all lists are treated, accessed, and graded like articles. Hello. A few months ago, you deleted Image:Genesis Live in Buffalo 1983.jpeg, an image that was used in a featured article and on the main page. It seems this deletion was a mistake as the image was being used in places other than the main page (only crops should be deleted). Can you undelete this? California State Route 1
Please explain your reasoning for re-adding such a long and detailed listing of local names back into the lead. You used this edit summary:
- (As per the guidelines of WP:R#What needs to be done on pages that are targets of redirects?, merging the "Segment names" section back to the lead intro section)
Are there such redirects, and if so, where are they? Wouldn't it be more logical to change them, than to violate the principles regarding WP:LEAD?
I would suggest changing the redirects, restoring the section, and then mentioning that section in the lead, according to the guidelines for the lead:
- State Route 1, often called Highway 1, is a state highway that runs along a large length of the Pacific coast of the U.S. State of California. Certain segments of the highway have their own (local) names. Highway 1 is famous for running by some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, leading to its designation as an All-American Road.

Orphaned non-free image (Image:EmmyAward.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:EmmyAward.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. I haven't been able to touch the POTD, though, since you haven't selected these yet.
