Moving pages

Sorry for moving the page Orinda in the way that I did. In the future, how should I go about doing that? Originally Orinda was a disambig page which had a link to Orinda, California, I moved them so O, C was at Orinda, and the disambig page was its own, linked from the O, C page. I copied the irignal 'Orinda' page, and copy/pased it into Orinda (disambiguation), then had Orinda redirect to Orinda, California). How should I do that in the future? Some boxes "saved" by vote, others Speedy Deleted?

Hi. Thought I'd check in with you again. As per our nice Feb. 12 discussion re: the status of the Template:User_anti-fascism userbox, I see it just "survived" a keep/delete vote. Fine, but I'm a bit annoyed, not by the content (about which I could care less) but because the "pro" was deleted rather quickly, and the anti-Marxism boxes were deleted quickly. The pro-Marxist boxes...well, they never faced a TfD vote at all and survive intact. I'm detecting a rather one-sided and selective pattern of deletions here. Why is that? You said deletions were rather slow, but not slow enough to "save" selective boxes. I think I need more education on this topic to be better informed. Nhprman 03:00, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Syrnia Deletion

I'm a bit bemused by the deletion of the entry for Syrnia on Wikipedia. Sure if you deem yourself justified to delete a page set up by fans of a game. You should also delete the Runescape Wikipedia entry.

• First, let me preface by saying I was not a big fan of those templates anyway. But, of course, I was sort of overruled by the others participating on Wikipedia:WikiProject California State Highways who wanted to list every major junction. That said, I still wanted to see a discussion before major changes were implemented on the template. And I am rather not surpised that SPUI decided to put it on TFD instead of on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject California State Highways. Hello, you deleted the talk page and removed the Delete tag, but what about deleting the article page with the template on it ? That is the page that requires speedy deletion not the talk page. Just for your information. To my mind, User:Ted Wilkes is frequently gaming the system. He did this several times in the past. Most people may remember his mud-throwing campaign against arbcom member Fred Bauder. There is much evidence that he is identical with multi-hardbanned User:DW. Yes, they were me. I just couldn't stay logged in for some reason. Well, 11 March hasn't finished yet, so the very last TfDs probably still shouldn't be closed. I would think that using the UTC timestamp is the way it's always done, so I think some of them were closed a few hours early, but some of them basically an entire day ahead of schedule. E.g. the one at the top of the list shouldn't have been closed until a time in the vicinity of 23:54 UTC on 11th March - about 50 minutes' from now. A few hours is no big deal, but nearly 24 hours is a little too much probably. -Splash^talk 23:10, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

NCAA Tourneys

These edits represent a first cut at tournament pages, and my main goal in creating them was to get something online before the (presumable) rush of people visiting the 2006 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. I'll try to switch over to your templates in the near future, but as I mentioned before, flexibility is the main issue. I don't know if the wiki template syntax supports it, but it would be nice if unspecified cells in a 16 team bracket were just left blank. This would allow for byes. Also, before 1979, there were no seeds.

Which bots remove whitespace that they deem unnecessary? I'm surprised that there are bots like this, as it seems needlessly destructive... --Dantheox 21:03, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

panthers fight song edit

My thought on putting that text back into the article that you removed is that mentioning that other teams having fight songs shows that it's part of a treasured NFL tradition, and that the Panthers wanted to start with something traditional that could become part of the fabric of the team.

Wikifying NCAA Tournament Brackets

I've moved the 1998 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament page to your {{4TeamBracket}} and {{16TeamBracket}} templates, and will be updating the remaining 64 team tournaments (1985-2004) soon. A few thoughts on the brackets:

• They could easily be more compact vertically. There's a lot of whitespace between the team name and the black line below it. This looks especially funky in the first round. I'm aware that this is probably an issue with the way brackets are implemented using tables, but it should be fixed if at all possible.
• Would it be possible to implement byes using metatemplates? If it's possible, would it be advisable? My thinking is that if "RD1-team05" and "RD1-team06" are left unspecified, then the gridlines for that game in the bracket would be colored white. Using some combination of metatemplates like Template:Qif, Template:Unless defined and Template:booland would presumably do the trick.
• Was there any particular reason you chose not to include a line for the bracket winner? There's enough information there to deduce who won, sure, but it's so satisfying to see that one team on a line all their own...

Perhaps a better way to do byes would be to include a "display" parameter for each first round game. With the default value, it has no effect, but if a value like "display:none" or maybe "#ffffff" is passed in, then it simply blanks out the cell. It looks as though your table layout would be mostly amenable to this -- the only display problem I can see that would be created is with the long vertical strips between each round. In the presence of a bye, these strips would still need to be there, only they would have half their current height (since there would only be one game leading into the next round, not two). This could be achieved by splitting the "rowspan=4" cell into two "rowspan=2" cells. Does this make sense? I'd be willing to make some of these changes, but I have a feeling you'd be able to do it more easily. --Dantheox 18:17, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Moving a page

I noticed that the page Red cedar redirects to Redcedar, which is clearly misspelled (should be two words). I wasnt able to change it since the correct spelling was already a page ( Red cedar, the redirect). Could you fix this? Or if you could tell me how, I will. Sample bracket with byes

I've tweaked your Template:4TeamBracket to allow byes using the "color:white" method I described above. Sample template at User:Dantheox/4TeamBracketByes and a demo at User:Dantheox/Bracket Byes. Basic idea: there are two new parameters, "RD1-game1" and "RD1-game2". If they aren't specified, then it's just your four team bracket. If they're set to "white", then the corresponding game is completely whited out. Let me know what you think... "display:none" may have been a better way to do this, but "color:white" seems to work, too. How difficult would it be to integrate this into Template:16TeamBracket? --Dantheox 05:52, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

You certainly are ahead of me -- the three round bracket looks great! Just from an elegance/permanent solution point of view, I think the Template:Qif approach is better, even if it does use a controversial feature of Wikipedia. Tossing in an extra parameter with a strange, implementation-dependent value goes against every bone in my comp-sci body... and plus, if there's ever a less-controversial way to do the template than with Qif, it would be simple to just convert a single template page, rather than changing every tournament page. If you also make a 16-team version of this bracket, I'll get going on automatically updating the historical brackets. --Dantheox 06:36, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

The {{4RoundBracket-Byes}} template would only be used in 1979-1984, so it's not that high priority. The three round bracket with byes covered pretty much everything. I noticed that User:Jodel's brackets had a Bronze Medal Match. This would be fantastically useful for the NCAA brackets, both for the two round bracket (a national third place game was played until 1981) and the three round bracket (a regional third place game was played until ~1975). This third place game would be a great candidate for {{Qif}}-ing --Dantheox 16:43, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

group field in 16TeamBracket

I just adjusted the bracket in the 1951 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament to reflect the fact that there wasn't a "real" final four that year. I combined the seperate regional brackets (8 team brackets) to make one big 16-team bracket. I used the "group1" and "group2" fields in your template to mark out the East and West regions in this bracket, but I'm not very happy with how the result looks. I'd assumed that these labels would go in the second round column, in the large gap between the first/second and third/fourth games. Any chance you could make this change? Dear Zzyzx, I saw you recently failed the article Mickey Mantle for GA status. If you have reviewed an article (regardless of decision) you should remove it from Wikipedia:Good articles/Nominations to prevent confusion.

The main problem with your review was that it wasn't very in-depth, as you only commented on the introduction, and ignored the rest of the article. After having quickly scanned the article, it seems to be okay (if you check my track record I am a hard ass when it comes to GA) and one minor blip is not enough for failure (it is however a main component of denying promotion, often alongside a wealth of grammar issues). I am reviewing this thoroughly, and shall make a decision whether to keep the article or abide your decision.

Yes, the intro is the most important part, but the rest of articles makes up for it. Like I said, way up the pros and cons, obviously the pros win here. Translations of Wikipedia articles certainly don't count as adequate citation, but I WP:TIE#Instructions is clear on acknowledging them when we use them significantly, and has said more or less the same thing for at least a year. So, it's not an adequate source, but it should still be acknowledged, much as we would expect anyone outside of Wikipedia using that as a source to acknowledge it.

Ahh, hmm.. the PNG I have is 24-bit (the GIF is 8-bit, and converting to PNG likely resulted in an 8-bit PNG; converting from the JPEG would result in a 24-bit image, but would also keep whatever compression artifacts were present in it). I was just wondering on what grounds you made this decision: association football is a professional sport in the UK; the player concerned is an amateur and has never played for a professional club, which means he fails the basic test for notability for sportspersons in WP:BIO. Instead of just changing the tag you should consider deleting images at Category:Images on Wikimedia Commons. There are only 7425 of these left. This was the reason I used the {{db}} tag, because nothing ever seems to get done and the category just keeps getting bigger. Someone really should take care of this. Thanks Zzyzx11, for noticing that I hadn't vandalized the page. You are perceptive. I HATE vandalism, believe me. I'm a new kid on the block.Good advice though about summarizing the edits. I should have at least mentioned that I left something on the Discussion page regarding why I removed that paragraph about the CATCH II (by the way what is CATCH I???). I removed it because something kept going wrong with the formatting when I tried to give

its own heading. I simply removed the piece after much frustration and hid it on the talk page.
