Grrr. Not signed so doesn't get archived. Annoying. waggers (talk) 15:43, 8 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have now finished adding every one of the 317 listed buildings into the article (which is now rather large!). I still need to add some explanatory text together with filling in the descriptions for each listing. I have scoured WP Commons and Geograph for suitable images, although less than half of the listings are illustrated. Are you able to help in any way? I will be moving away from Southampton very soon, so am unlikely to be able to get on my bike and pop into town to take photos of, say, the Oxford Street area which seems to be rather neglected on Geograph. Thanks for any help. -- Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 12:59, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again - thanks for adding this article. I note that you have gone with "Julian" rather than "Julien". The Southampton City Council list of Listed Buildings states (see page 169) "The correct spelling is "St Julien", as used on OS maps." -- Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 17:57, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I wasn't sure as most of the sources I found use "Julian". I'll change it back to "Julien". waggers (talk) 09:30, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was at Town Quay yesterday so I took a look at the church and have added a photo I took of the sign in the foyer. Incidentally, I get the impression this is now privately owned - is it still consecrated? -- Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 19:04, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly don't know. The local parish website doesn't mention it at all, but the national CofE one does. Not really sure how to find out, but I'll try to! waggers (talk) 08:51, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Stale report"[edit]

I only found out about the vandalism of the Blue Water Bridge article this morning. How long since the vandalism took page do you give before the report is determined to be stale? A rogue editor using different IP addresses and usernames, if you look at the history of the editing of the Blue Water Bridge article at [1], have vandalized renaming the bridge after "Laurel Robinson." The last time the vandalism took place, the IP address was given a temporary block. Steelbeard1 (talk) 12:38, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The user needs to be active at the time of the report. That isn't defined officially anywhere but it essentially means their last edit should be a matter of minutes ago not hours ago. Blocks are preventative, not punitive - if there's no activity to block, there's no point blocking it. If the issue is that a single page is being targeted by multiple IP addresses and/or usernames, the best solution is to seek page protection. waggers (talk) 12:44, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted[edit]

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 02:35, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

White Zombie[edit]

Hello, Waggers. Although I question your conclusion that "White Zombie" has "no primary topic", assuming for the sake of discussion that you are correct, then when you moved the article about the band to a different title and created a new disambiguation page at White Zombie, it would have been most helpful if you had also checked and fixed all the incoming links to that title, as suggested at WP:FIXDABLINKS. You can still help fix all the links you broke by these edits, and it would be appreciated. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 00:35, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ichthus: May 2012[edit]

ICHTHUS

May 2012

From the Editor[edit]

This month marks the observation of Pentecost, one of the most important feast of the Christian liturgical year. It is our hope here that all of you, regardless of your religious affiliation (if any), find that the holiday, and its accompanying activities, an enjoyable and beneficial experience. We also hope that this "Birthday of the Church" is one which gives you the same joy as the birthday of yourself or your loved ones.

Ichthus is the successor to the long running WikiProject Christianity newsletter, run under the WikiProject Christianity’s Outreach department. As such, you will continue to see information about our latest featured and good articles, DYKs, as well as new members who have joined our project. You might also see links to Christianity related news from the mainstream media!

With that, I wish you all happy reading!

John Carter, Asst. Editor

P.S. Please click here to add the new Christianity-related topics Noticeboard to your watchlist to follow the latest discussions relevant to WikiProject Christianity and subprojects.

Help Bring Wikipe-tan "into the fold"[edit]

As many of you may know, our unofficial mascot, dear Wikipe-tan, hasn't yet indicated any particular beliefs. However, yes, as we all know, ahem, some people might object to our beloved mascot running around in a French maid outfit. People do talk, you know. ;) If anyone might be able to develop an image of the dear lady in a image more, well, "Christian," I would like to see perhaps a vote for next month as to which, if any, image of the dear girl we might make our own unofficial mascot. Please post your images here.

Christianity in other wikis[edit]

As many of you might now, there are a large number of other Wikimedia Foundation projects, including WikiSource, Wiktionary, Wikibooks, WikiQuote, and others. I certainly believe that Wikibooks and Wikiquote might be among the more directly relevant sister projects. If any of you can think of any particular efforts in these other projects which you think would benefit from more input, please let us know here, so we can help spread the word around.

By John Carter

Spotlight on the Outreach department[edit]

Ichthus will spotlight a different subproject or workgroup of WikiProject Christianity. This edition will spotlight on our vital Outreach department. This comparatively small, but vital, project unit is dedicated to welcoming new editors to Wikipedia and the Christianity related content, and to providing information to the various project members, in forms like this newsletter.

The scope of articles with which this group deals is truly enormous, and, given the wide variety of material with which we deal, we would very much welcome the input of more individuals, particularly individuals who are particularly knowledgeable of the less well-known and less frequently monitored articles related to Christianity.

Speaking personally, I would be very, very gratified if we were to have this become a very, very large and active unit, with members from the broad spectrum of Christian beliefs, practices, and groups. The broader the spectrum and areas of expertise of members we have, the better we will be able to help manage the content. Please consider whether you believe you might be able to contribute in this vital area.

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on the Counter-Vandalism Unit for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Politics in the British Isles[edit]

Waggers,

I replied to your !vote on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Politics in the British Isles. A major concern I have is that the two articles (Politics in the British Isles and Ireland–United Kingdom relations) treat substantively the same subject, but merely from different perspectives.

As there are only two sovereign states in the archipelago (and the Crown Dependencies are constitutionally linked to the UK) the potential for the new article to expand beyond the scope of the existing one is practically zero. Certainly, in a evidential sense, there is currently no difference in subject matter between the two article.

regarding trolling[edit]

As I said, I was trolling. I fully expected a revert. However, the intention wasn't to misinform readers. It was to send a message to the bigots ethnically harassing Greeks. I don't take a word back or regret the decision given the ogres I mention now dishonestly pretend not to notice the former Yugoslavians sudden identity change into "ancient Macedonians". Colluding with wannabe ethnic cleansers of my family supersedes any other consideration (including concerns over minor Wikipedia trolling violations)

The proof they have severe prejudices against Greeks is their selective memory. To put substance to my claim, now that the former Yugoslavians have suddenly become descendents of ancient Macedonians (apparently Slavic not Greek now) and constantly attempt to insinuate my homeland is "occupied", when was the last time Luke Coffey or any other of the patronizing apologists for nationalist extremists in the former Yugoslav republic mentioned "minor" historical details like this?

"This (US) Government considers talk of Macedonian "nation", Macedonian "Fatherland", or Macedonia "national consciousness" to be unjustified demagoguery representing no ethnic nor political reality, and sees in its present revival a possible cloak for aggressive intentions against Greece" - US State Department Dec, 1944 (Foreign Relations Vol. VIII Washington D.C. Circular Airgram - 868.014/26)

"It should be noted that there is NO CONNECTION between the Macedonians of the time of Alexander the Great who were a GREEK tribe and today's so-called 'macedonians' of the 'Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia' or FYROM, who are of SLAVIC origin and related to BULGARIANS." - David H Levinson, 'The Encyclopaedia of Ancient Cultures'

'The idea that Alexander the Great belongs to us was at the mind of some outsider groups only. These groups were insignificant in the first years of our independence. But the big problem is that the old Balkan nations have been learned to legitimize themselves through their history. In the Balkans to be recognized as a nation you need to have history of 2,000 to 3,000 years old. Since you (Greece ) forced us to invent a history, we did invent it.' (FYROM Foreign Minister Denko Maleski - 1991 to 1993) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlDLmufGHqQ&feature=related

'We do not claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great.' - FYROM'S Ambassador Ljubica Acevshka, speech to US representatives in Washington on January 22 1999

"We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century ... We are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians" - Kiro Gligorov, FYROM's first President, Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBB8UjOHG_8

Greeks have lived in Anatolia for millennia, especially along the Aegean coast. For a while, under Alexander, they dominated the land. And for all intents and purposes, the Byzantine Empire (the Eastern Roman Empire at the time) was Greek. When Mehmct 11 conquered Constantinople, he appointed a Greek monk to the orthodox Patriarch and allowed him to govern both the religious and secular affairs of the Greek community. The first Ottoman census, of 1477, counted half of Constantinople’s population as Greek, and four-hundred years later, even after the Greek War of Independence, it was still 21 percent Greek. -○ Lowenthal, David (1998). The heritage crusade and the spoils of history. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press. pp. 245.

On November 4, 2004, two days after the re-election of President George W. Bush, his administration unilaterally recognized the “Republic of Macedonia.”  This action not only abrogated geographic and historic fact, but it also has unleashed a dangerous epidemic of historical revisionism, of which the most obvious symptom is the misappropriation by the government in Skopje of the most famous of Macedonians, Alexander the Great. http://macedonia-evidence.org/obama-letter.html

Topic Ban[edit]

Hello, you were part of the discussion on my topic ban here: Administrators' Noticeboard Archive 235

I am interested in working with you for the probation that Jiujitsuguy proposed.

--Eric (talk) 18:10, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Waggers, since the wikibias canvassing site is still running, (Eric started it and then he said he gave it to someone else) I think Eric1985 should tell us which Wikipedia user it is who is now running the website, before any kind of topic ban is lifted. --Supreme Deliciousness (talk) 19:15, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Get a grip SD. It's not a "canvassing site." It's a friggin blog. Do you want a pound of flesh? Prior to the subject sanction, Eric had a squeaky clean record which is a lot more than I can say for you and do I have to remind you of your egregious canvassing efforts? Do you want me to link to those diffs? Or to some your other gems perhaps. If people were as intolerant of you as you are of Eric1985, you would not be not be editing today.

Waggers, the original blocking admin has expressed indifference so you wouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes if you lifted the ban. In any event, as AgadaUrbanit correctly noted at the discussion, if he misbehaves, we can block him and curse his name. I think that in light of the fact that up until the subject block he had no prior history, coupled with the fact that the blocking admin no longer cares one way or the other, coupled with genuine expressions of contrition and willingness to work collaboratively, all these factors work in favor of lifting.--Jiujitsuguy (talk) 00:24, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

@Jiujitsuguy I think your suggestion at the end of that AN thread is an excellent one and am certainly willing to support that. However, even though the original admin has expressed indifference, I'd like to ensure there's wider consensus rather than acting unilaterally. I'll therefore re-raise the discussion at WP:AN to see if we can rubber-stamp that suggestion. WaggersTALK 09:16, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Waggers.--Jiujitsuguy (talk) 14:37, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for looking at this reasonable Waggers. It seems that I keep getting stuck in limbo. --Eric (talk) 18:08, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Knight & Lee[edit]

Hi Waggers, You appear to have recently edited the talk page for Knight & Lee. I think you may have mistakenly deposited alot of information relating to military knights on this page. Knight & Lee concerns a department store in Southsea, Hampshire, England.

AndrewSE19 (talk) 15:31, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not guilty, i'm afraid - I know what Knight & Lee is and know next to nothing about military knights. Have you checked the edit history to see who it really was? WaggersTALK 15:49, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see what's happened. I'm road testing a new project tagging/assessment script and it looks like it didn't cope with the ampersand, and included the contents of Talk:Knight. Thanks for the heads-up, I've reverted the mistaken edit. WaggersTALK 15:58, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I believe[edit]

... in the statements contained in the Nicene Creed. I believe that the Bible is one of the two defining bases for belief. The other is the Sacred tradition, which provides us with means of interpreting the Scriptures, as well as some teachings which have been handed on by God outside of the scriptures. I believe that the Magisterium has been empowered to fill this interpretative function. I believe that clerical celibacy is a rule that should generally be followed. I am a member of the Catholic Church.

Notability & next steps[edit]

Thank you for your feedback on the Deborah Berke, Architect. I am not sure if your comment means the article has passed the notability test, and your note says it needs a fair amount of work. Can you please elaborate regarding what kind of work? And what are the next steps? I wish to avoid a COI and am trying to follow all of the Wikipedia:Conflict of interest guidelines. Notability of individual dresses[edit]

Hi Waggers,

Been following discussion Wikipedia:Notability/Noticeboard#Yellow_dress_of_Reese_Witherspoon with great interest, but it appears to have stalled. Most of the dresses on Category:Individual dresses are well referenced and show noteworthiness, but this one and Gold satin Christian Dior dress of Kate Moss (which I'll be blunt, makes me want to chew the desk with frustration every time I see it for reasons spelt out on the Talk Page) genuinely don't show much long term notability, but I'm not sure what a suitable merger location would be.

Incidentally, have you seen Category:Dresses worn on the red carpet at the Academy Awards and its related template? I'm a big fashion nut, but even I think this is a bit extreme - a quick scan through the non-red-links and their references shows that only maybe a handful of them show enough notability in the form of extended coverage and references to justify individual articles. The rest largely seem to have barely enough notability to warrant passing mention in a theoretical red-carpet fashion article. Thoughts? I must admit the slightly intimidating message at the top of the creator's talk page does make me hesitate to nominate for AfD. Mabalu (talk) 11:47, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Politics in the British Isles[edit]

I'd like you give input to a thread I've opened on "Politics in the British Isles". If the article is to exist then we may as well make a fist of improving it. Unfortunately, I think that means blowing it up and starting again. I've proposed an outline for re-starting the article on a firmer and more reasonable footing.

You acknowledged in the AfD that the article has problems and needs a good deal of work, I'd appreciate it if you would contribute now to putting a good shape on it now. --RA (talk) 23:54, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've got it through UTRS. I am going to change the block you made on User:Sandandclaysilt as autoblock and stopping people editing with accounts from that IP is too harmful to other users, considering he was a fairly average vandal. I will take both autoblock and account editing off, if we get more vandalism we may have to put autoblock back on. I hope this is okay. "Prevent logged-in users from editing from this IP address" can cause loads of collateral damage. Secretlondon (talk) 20:39, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sandandclaysilt[edit]

Hello Waggers, I just got a message on my talk page asking about your block of User:Sandandclaysilt. Could you take a look and explain your reasons for blocking to the user who asked, if you think that's appropriate? Thanks — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 23:24, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The edits the user in question was making were very disruptive - twice shutting down Cluebot, deleting the talk headers from Talk:Main Page and then making some pretty horrific edits to the featured article of the day. He* was warned about making "test" edits very clearly[2] [3] and persisted, culminating in a level 4 warning[4], after which he did not desist. There was no option but to block him/her.
* - I'm using male pronouns for convenience but the user's gender is unknown
What's more, the pattern of behaviour itself is somewhat dubious - making a couple of "good" but very minor edits to relatively unknown articles to try and establish himself as a "good editor" followed by some pretty drastic major changes to high visibility pages and continuing to do so despite some very clear warnings. I like to assume good faith but this pattern of editing looks very much like a strategy to disguise a vandal account by putting in a couple of "good" edits first.
Finally it's worth remembering that an indefinite block is not necessarily a permanent block. If the user has valid grounds for appeal he can easily do so using the {{unblock}} template, as instructed in the message I left on his talk page when blocking him. It's interesting that he hasn't queried the block himself or tried to plead that the edits were made innocently/accidentally. Indeed it would be hard to uphold such an argument given the fact the editor continued to make disruptive edits after clear warnings that such action would result in a block.
Hope that helps. WaggersTALK 08:05, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for clarifying this. It seems clear enough to me that this was a good block, and hopefully this will satisfy Altamel's query as well. Best — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 15:35, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I won't argue this further. I must say I still disagree that an indefinite blcok is warranted--I don't think a long term pattern of vandalism had been fully established at that point; isn't the usual procedure for dealing with vandals progressively longer blocks? But I'm not interested in spending more time debating this issue. Thanks anyway for your reply. Altamel (talk) 17:14, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

James Ussher[edit]

Hello Waggers, Thanks for all you do,I know you must have many more important things than this to deal with.My edit to James Ussher was supposed to be just a preview, you see there were people here and we were on a comment board discussing the great discrepancies in the Earth's Origin date and those using these "facts" for their own agenda and Religious beliefs(someone must have hit Save instead of preview)?Saying that it was not constructive though,as some might also think about some of the other points lionizing and making excuses for him,is that not really just subjective? The politics of Religion continues!!!I will also be looking to find more about him as he was obviously a very accomplished and learned man(like he needs that from a College drop out),yet he was one who was pushing his beliefs and agenda against many others, including other Religion's policies and beliefs! But again to my edit,he was off by Billions and Billions,so it was a fact, correct and true!

One other small thing you might be able to help me with,I saw a Wiki request to look for spelling/other mistakes so I found and changed a spelling error for the word minstrels on the Tristan and Iseult Wikipedia Page, now this Ussher edit came up in history when you sent me the message but the one I made for the spelling mistake and another I made did not show up?Might this be because of a sign in problem or changing internet provider/computer?

I truly respect your views,

Thanks again for the good work,
