District Attorney - New York County, New York

First off, nice job with the article. Just a note on Richard Kuh - he was actually appointed by Frank Hogan after Hogan had to resign. Kuh was never elected, and actually lost when he ran against Robert Morgenthau, so I think he should go on "appointed" instead of "elected". Thanks. GoCuse44 (talk) 04:06, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments. The list is supposed to be chronological and the heading was intended to differentiate between appointed (as was originally done) and elected as is currently done. Since it's confusing I guess I should drop it. BTW, the list is comprehensive through 1909 there may be some others between 1909 and 1935, so if you know them feel free to add. Thanks again. NRHP in Suffolk County, New York

Were you planning the NRHP lists for all Suffolk County towns all along? I was barely able to finish chopping down duplicates of the Suffolk County NRHP lists for Southampton and East Hampton, before finding out you've already got them finished and posted. -----DanTD (talk) 04:53, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

I know what a pain and how much time is involved. I thought in the discussion that I would break out the five east end towns (East Hampton/Shelter Island/Southampton/Southold/Riverhead). I'm almost finished with Huntington, and I added some redlinks for the other three east end towns. But what I'm stuck on is Fort Salonga. That's right next door to my cousin's neighborhood. I knew there was something to that restrictred property across the street from the beach. Now I don't have to call her up and not know whether she'll have time to discuss it or not. As you can guess it was removed, but I've still done some other work. I made some street-wikilinks onto NY 25A and Old Country Road, and I'm sorry I couldn't find any located on NY 25, NY 108 or NY 110. There are also a lot of addresses and street names that are incorrect on the existing list. I found some sites that were listed as being in Huntington (CDP) that weren't, and I found the Eaton's Neck Lighthouse was supposedly claimed to be off of NY 25A, when both Eaton's Neck and Asharoken are much futhter north from Route 25A. I could post it there now and have more work done on it, or I could do the adjustments before posting them. ----DanTD (talk) 03:34, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Company categories

These categories generally will have different parents then the company article. This is due to the many differences. For instance, if the company is founded in one year, that belongs in the company article and not the category. Yep, it was through your linking of the new article on the Sports Museum Article that I saw this new article. Very disappointed especially since I was meant to take my brother today. I was suspect of the museum from the start mainly because everything involving Ground Zero has been badly handled and ill thought out. The museum (which used Ground Zero repair fed funds) seemed to think Ground Zero would be a huge tourist draw. They should have made it its own destination. On top of everything else they didn't seem to make any effort to publicize it. They should have been popping up on every sports event. As they say in their own comments nobody in NYC ever even heard of it. The photo on the article shows the publicity of ads on bicycles! Wow! I said to a friend the other day, you have to know it was there to know about it. It was not at all publicised at the airports, etc. Sad because it had some great materials and had a decent location especially if people wanted to walk from the ferries (SI or Statue/Ellis) to Ground Zero and Wall Street, but even then it wasn't obvious what the building was and that it was something to stop at. I hope they find a buyer. I wonder what will become of the Womens' Sports Hall of Fame and again, the Heisman needing to find a new home StarM 23:35, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your nice note and your efforts to complete the projects so quickly. I usually don't replace existing photos. The photos look a bit like they were taken by a cell phone (which tend to be softer and appear out of focus). I didn't see the usual exif data on the photos which identifies the camera. I've gotten real hard core into finishing at least NYC and perhaps even some of the burbs which I will try to do before or after work (can't do it on weekends). It's great exercise. I even bought a folding bike to extend my range. I intended to do this last summer but life intervened. I thought I better strike quickly this time before something intervenes again. Format for casino ownership/name changes

The basic wiki guideline is that for a name change you move the article. However there are exceptions. Binions is one. Given the history of the old name moving that to a new name did not make sense to some of hist. The name and the associated history were unique. On the AC articles, if the history was not moved, I suspect that someone did a cut and paste copy which is a violation of the GFDL. The article really needs to be moved with the history. Again assuming that is the right thing to do. For some of the changes out there, I think new articles make be needed. I say this given the convoluted ownership and operations of some like Ballys. Wild West, Clairidge and the Sands among others. If you have a specific case you want me to look at, let me know and I take a look. Pedal pusher

It was fun in Commons following your last Wednesday's photographic expedition through Morningside Heights and easteward through Central Harlem until the light faded too much for further pictures. Hope you had lights for the trip home. What brand / model bike?

Commons has its differences, but it's a great place for pictures. I start most morning or evening Wikisessions with Wikipedia, and some days don't have time to get to Commons. Other days, Commons gets as much of my time as the encyclopedia. Pictures are easier to find there, because they are better categorized. Or at least, many pictures have proper cats, and those pix are more easily found than those in Wikipedia, where they can seldom be found unless someone has already associated them with the appropriate article.

Sometimes I use a computer that, when I log into en Wikipedia, automatically logs me into Commons or vice versa. More often, ones where this automatic multiple log-in feature of Wikimedia doesn't work.

Commons is underadministered; more people want to be photographers than want to spend time organizing. As a result bots do much of the work and are insensitive to human feelings. Just have to understand it's a poor dumb machine and doesn't mean to be mean.

Anyway it's great to see you combining the power of the camera with that of the bicycle. You will soon mop up all the unillustrated or badly illustrated articles in Manhattan and can start on The Bronx and other areas. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:56, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Jim. I probably should change the tone of my little opus on Commons. Commons is well meaning. It's a shame that they can't integrate it. They sure would have a lot more admins. Kudos to you for even trying.

I thought it was funny we shot the Fort Washington armory from nearly the same angle but mine was in the twilight of my big adventure. I finished off most of the rest of Harlem this morning (the reverse case where the light improves with the trip). There's a mop up on a couple Riverside buildings I need to get and I should have shot the Mount Morris Bank even though it was hidden behind construction. Some of those shots need to be reshot in better lighting.

I probably rode my bike (and at the moment I can't remember its brand) no more than 4X a year for the last 10 or so. Now I've gone crazy. My last two adventures were on foot though. By the time I get off work and get going there's only a hour of usable sun. The twilight photos sometimes add a nice touch though.

There's a bunch of buildings downtown left. Then it's probably off to Queens to start the other boroughs. I may even eventually venture into Nassau and perhaps even western Suffolk as the days gets longer.

I did buy the downtube bike I mentioned earlier. I haven't extensively ridden it yet. Everybody tells me I will be shocked at how much extra I will have to pedal. I only rode around the block and didn't notice anything major other than I will probably replace the seat. Americasroof (talk) 13:57, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Admin work is boring, and especially so in pictures. Sometimes I spend an hour categorizing someone else's pix or moving them, which sometimes turns up a splendid illustration or two. Indeed I ought to review the cats of some of yours when I finish inserting and categorizing my own pix (four weeks ago!) in Staten Island and then the ones from last weekend in Pittsburgh.

Fort Washington Armory doesn't satisfy me yet; my pic is too dark from being done on a cloudy day and suffers some kind of technical flaw inside the camera, while your twilite shot from the same street corner is much too dark. Funny thing, your pic of the 100th Street Bus Depot is similarly dark and a bit blurry as well, yet is splendid despite. The more I see pix I like, the less I understand what's good about them. I was shocked that we have no decent pic of 195 Broadway. Not a prime bike target, but a prime photo target surrounded by other good targets.

Crazy over bicycling is one of the good kinds, especially when combined with some other silly endeavor like photographing the city. I expect to take Thursday off from work and hit the saddle for the first time in more than two weeks. Should I meet you in the late afternoon and we'll pedal over some bridge and chase some targets? When darkness catches us in Woodhaven or Woodbrige or Woodlawn or somewhere, fold the bikes, dine at whatever restaurant is at hand, and return by rail.

Plenty of good targets in Queens. I'm especially thinking of Whitestone Light, Popenhusen Institute and other places north and east of Flushing and for that matter old armoriies, churches etc in the middle of Flushing. And the long-abandoned railroad from there to Floral Park and Hempstead. And oof, much in Jamaica and a few places in Astoria. If you snap up much of this material then I can direct my efforts to Scarsdale, Newark, and other underwikiphotographed places.

No, a good folder isn't a lot more difficult. Many bikers overestimate the difference, not understanding how gearing is done. I figure I take the same time and effort to ride 7 or 8 miles on my little wheels as 10 on my big bike. There are also folders that further narrow or perhaps eliminate this gap, though they have distinctive disadvantages as well. Jim.henderson (talk) 17:34, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, Jim for your comments. I'm not 100 percent thrilled with my photos. There's obvious light problems from doing it before or after work. I know I need to better categorize my photos. I have that on the list of projects. I've been pushing to get them put up right away. If I don't, I forget what they were. Some of these historic buildings start to look alike after a while. I have numerous photos where I've delayed and I've forgotten what they were. In a perfect world, I probably should have delayed for longer days but from past practice if I don't do it when I'm hot for it life inevitably gets in the way. I still don't have the fold up bike in the city yet (I had it delivered to East Hampton since my doorman -- who is really an elevator operator -- is not supposed to sign for stuff). There are so many places that need at least an initial photo. I can't commit to any immediately after work activities until probably May or so. Nice job! I meant to red link the article after seeing it going to Alabama. Incredibly we're almost done with Manhattan. My next venture will be into Queens. I've looked at several of your photos. I suspect that your camera got wet and that's the reason your photos are soft. I lost a camera that way. Nobody fixes cameras in the shop and if you send out, it's cheaper to buy a new one. If you do that you might consider getting one with a wider angle lens. They're about the same price as the others but for building shots, I kinda like seeing the whole building. Great job again and I do appreciate all the articles you're doing. Salut ! Yes, I am in Kansas City again, but will go to France shortly, mid-June in Alabama to teach a university course, then to Kansas City. I still owe you photos from your last request, and I will get to them. -- As for Populous, the fact that it is in Kansas City is less amazing than WHERE in Kansas City it is located - west side of the City Market not far from the Broadway railway bridge, between I-70 and the Missouri River - a real no man's land. I am certain it is a TIFF zone, and former mayor Mrs Barnes probably threw a mountain of money and perpetual tax abatements at them to build there. -- The building is a luminous landmark at night, very heavily influenced by recent successful designs of British David Chipperfield, especially his Figge Art Museum, which has resulted in a number of other U.S. commissions (St. Louis Art Museum, Des Moines Central Library, et alia.) -- I will take photos for you when I can. Thanks again. I didn't know about your traveling. I was back in KC in March and took several shots of the earlier places I requested. There was snow on the ground so that made some interesting shots. As usual I have one day to shoot and am dependent on light during the whirlwind. My shot of the Midwest Research Institute sucks even though with the right light it should look great if taken at the right time given its primo location opposite the Nelson (even if the building is mundane). I went out to Sprint and was actually bowled over by the massive campus. It's quite different from almost every corporate headquarters. River Market has always had a funky charm that is truly unique. That's a fairly sophisticated answer for an anonymous post. I take it that you must be the subject of the article (there were some tell tale signs in the edits such as mentioning family details as well as eliminating the details of the arrest. I will abide by your wishes on the birthdate. Some of the arrest details should probably to go back to put it in perspective (I give you credit for not eliminating the link). You placed the same item on my page twice. I am deleting the second. I don't think you understand that county executive is a formal position that is chief executive of the county. In this case the county is Jackson County, Missouri which includes more than 600,000 people and includes Kansas City, Missouri. There is plenty of third party coverage about this guy. Thank you so much. You made my day. I thought KCAC was obscure enough that nobody would notice. I'm not quite sure yet how to fit it in but it's great to know. In the early days corporate sponsored teams and clubs competed against college teams of all sizes. By all rights Kansas City rather than Springfield, MA, should be considered the birthplace of basketball. Its astounding what you find when you dig in. The AAU was basically a KC phenomenon. Sharing repeated references to same source

Hi, just a tip that may save someone some work later – when adding multiple references (as in Albert Gonzalez) to the same news article, you can use the "name" parameter in the <ref> of the first use of the citation, thus: <ref name="MH0822">, then later on instead of repeating the same citation over and over, just say <ref name="MH0822" /> (note closing slash) to cite the same reference. Thanks. I know it's annoying when I do it the way I do it. The problem is that when I'm working on an article I frequently move sections around and the first reference will either get nuked or get out of order and that messes stuff up. I've found that bots usually will hit the article a few days later and take care of it. I always think it's most important to get the reference in to begin with. Unfortunately, careful editors like yourself frequently get to it first and I'm sure I annoy the holy crap out of you. I will try to do better going forward but I can't promise. Trying to better understand Wikipedia rules

We tried to find a wide range of external links that discuss or reference the publication and we specifically tried to focus on well-known sites that would ostensibly have some credibility (among the external links were to stories on CNN.com, USA Today, MSNBC and the Los Angeles Times). Noticed that all of the external independent links (meaning links OTHER than those from our site) were removed. May I ask the rationale? I thought Wikipedia encouraged external links from well-known sources? (If there's any way for you to respond privately--so that I can reply privately--I would very much appreciate it. Selden picture

Hello there, I saw you added a picture to the Selden, New York page among other local L.I. pages recently. Awesome! If by any chance you have any pictures of the Vietnam Memorial in Bald Hill, I've been looking for one to add to Bald Hill (Farmingville, New York). Thanks. Welcome aboard. There's not a lot of us working on Long Island articles (e.g., DanTD is probably the only other active editor). I put the maps on all the Long Island communities and even got Wiki to put the locator maps on the articles. Normally my articles are on the East End. I often add histories to LI -- especially origin of names. I have a friend who is undergoing cancer treatments at Stony Brook so I've contributed a fair amount of mid-island photos and updated communities I pass by as there are a few hours to kill during the treatments. I will definitely add Bald Hill (and the amphitheatre) to my itinerary during the next visit. Bald Hill has special significance for me because of my obsession with high points. I used to have a big article on Jaynes Hill on my americasroof page until I stated getting denial of service attacks. People always mentioned I should also go to Bald Hill. I never focused on it and didn't realize it was so close to the LIE and had passed it on other wanderings (the monument is indeed impressive). I've taken several high school photos but since the articles were never there I didn't post them. Anyway nice job on Bald Hill! Thanks so much! I got sucked into the Bald Hill one because I always heard as a child (growing up nearby) that it was the tallest point on Long Island, and it wasn't true! Speaking of Jayne's Hill, I recently expanded that article, and as I mentioned on the talk page, there appears to be some debate about the precise height which you might be able to clear up. As for high schools, I have created pages for all the districts on the North Fork now, and am working my way through the South Fork as well--many of the high schools don't have pages, but the district pages are good places for pictures of the high schools as well, I think.--Neighborhoodpalmreader (talk) 21:06, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Missouri has a pretty good bio of its recent members http://www.house.missouri.gov/bio/?year=2008&district=156 (Jetton appears in the various years he was in office). I've done a lot of work on the Speaker article for the state. The Speaker in the state has had a historic knack of getting indicted for influence peddling. But he really takes the cake. None of the others were as brazen. I've never seen anything like this. He embarrassed the Republicans even before this.
