Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Merge into WP:SHIPS?

I have a suggestion...

that this WikiProject be merged under the banner of WP:SHIPS as a component taskforce or workgroup or subproject... then a talkpage box would be {{WPSHIPS|Sail=yes}} or something.

I'm glad to see that someone finally woke this project up. There are some articles that I tagged for wp:ships that don't really fit the project scope. Since sailing didn't have a project banner I left them alone. I shall now add your banner when I come across one that doesn't fit wpships. Sports Notability

There is discussion ongoing at Wikipedia_talk:BIO#RFC:_WP:Athlete_Professional_Clause_Needs_Improvement debating possible changes to the WP:ATHLETE notability guideline. As a result, some have suggested using WP:NSPORT as an eventual replacement for WP:ATHLETE. Sailing at the .... Summer Olympics

Folks,

I started to upgrade the articles on Sailing at the Sailing at the .... Summer Olympics

Please allow me some slack because I can not change everyting at the same time. It involves this article, the sections of 1896 till 2016 (30), the (former/Vintage) Olympic Classes (48), including results, medal tallies, sailors and so on. A change of an article can have impact on another or at the total. Therefor changes will be done in a recurrent way. If you find errors please put it on my discussion page first so that wil not have to make extra edit cycles.

Thank you for your help on these articles, but please follow the WP:WikiProject Olympics consensus for this type of article. For example, results for individual events are kept on separate pages (e.g. Category:Sailing events at the 2008 Summer Olympics) instead of bundled together like you did to 1972. Fair use images on sailing at the... summer Olympics

Hi,

As you might have noticed many of the fair use images have been removed from the pages sailing at the... this week by User talk:Rettetast. As result a bot is buzy to label them as orphans since they are used no longer. As result of that the images might be deleted.

A few months have past since I started the upgrade of the sailing at the ... series, and with help from some of you on it was possible to reach a high level of generic format for this series as wel as a high level of content. At this moment 1900 till 1972 were upgraded to this high level and the article series have now left the stage of stub and have grown to a mature status as you will agree.

Discussed was use of the fair use images by the Finn victors of 1964 the result of the discussion was keep! When these images of races and victors of the Olympics will be deleted we will loose significant information of the history of the sport. Knowlegeble sailors will get a lot of historic information if they compare, as example, a star race from 1948 with that of one of 1984. Information about development in handling, rigging, tunning and sailing the boat by top sailors at the top event.

By removing the images, that support the articles in a way only words can not convey, the article series will loose valuable information and maturity. The images are not there for decoration but perform an informative rol.

Can you please support the battle of maintaining the level of information maturity in this article series, before the images are deleted and undoing of the changes of User talk:Rettetast will not be possible without creating the images again. A general problem with most sailing articles

I have noticed that many, if not most, articles in the Sailing category suffer from a chronic problem. When read by a user with no knowledge of nautical terminology they read like gibberish. It should be a guiding rule that the lede be written in non-technical language accessible to all readers. The body can contain more technical language as long as links are included with esoteric terms.

Most readers who come to articles such as Death roll have usually found the term or phrase in a book and are reaching for an explanation. Setting the latter out in additional obscure terminology only adds frustration and is no help to the problem. Please consider this. ~ Alcmaeonid (talk) 15:03, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Cascade Yachts

FYI, there is a proposal for a WP:BOATS to cover watercraft that are smaller than those bannered by WP:SHIPS. Sailboats vs Sailing Ships

Category:Sailing vessels contains subcategories named Category:Sailboats and Category:Sailing ships. Perhaps an opening sentence should be placed at the top of Category:Sailing vessels to direct users & editors to the appropriate subcategory. Scope

Do you cover all sailing topics, or only those related to sport sailing and recreational sailing? Someone at WP:SHIPS said that you do not cover sailing ships (like tall ships). 65.93.12.101 (talk) 07:28, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

• The problem manifests itself when looking at various categories. eg categories which are 'sail' or 'sailing' orientated cannot only be limited to recreational sailing otherwise the casual or serious reader is disconnected from the world of merchant and naval Sailing. If the mood is that this project covers recreational sailing then it probably needs to be refined to Sailing (recreational) or similar. What does every one think on this?? Since the project hasn't been renamed are we to assume that anything sailing goes? After all, WP:Ships accepts any vessel over a certain length, 100ft I think, but many tall ships are used purely for recreation. Many vessels exist over the length minimum that are purely recreational, and they are getting bigger all the time - WP:Ships seems to automatically include anything breaching the minimum, but does that prevent WP:Sailing from taking an interest? Considering the limited traffic that this project sees is it wise to exclude anything that sails (on water anyways)? Weakopedia (talk) 08:11, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Lets put it another way - since WP defines sport as "generally recognised as being based in physical athleticism" are there any objections to changing the scope of the project, as outlined on the main page, from the sport of sailing to the activity of sailing? This would legitimise the inclusion of all recreational sailing activities and not limit the project to races. Remember that many vessels exist over and under 100ft that have a commercial purpose year-round, eg. charter yachts, but whose commercial purpose is recreation, though not precisely sport. I'm happy with activity. I agree that there are (or were) also working sailing vessels at under 100ft, (mostly to do with various forms of the fishing industry), that would't fit into WP:Ships, so they make sense here, and cruising, for example, is a common sailing activity conducted for other than sport. - Bilby (talk) 12:16, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Then we need to create a list of community sailing centers in the united states

I think this would actually further the sport of sailing by helping to direct people community sailing centers who have never sailed before and are using wikipedia for reference and education purposes.

If the topic is important enough to have its own article then it shouldn't be hard to find good sources discussing it. The first you give doesn't mention the topic as such, but gives one line about a "Community Sailing Centre". The second is to an online phone directory. Neither has anything about the "Community Sailing Program" that would require an article of its own.

Googling the topic, it appears difficult to find much about this Program, with links going mostly to individual sailing clubs which do not explain much about the Program itself. If you can find information about the Program it would be great, but be wary of starting an article that could be seen as an advertisement for a bunch of sailing clubs, even if it is in a good cause. Indeed, we would need some reliable sources that directly address and define "community sailing." I'm having trouble finding any just doing a quick search. Maybe there are some in magazines. This document from US Sailing gives that organization's basic guidelines about what a community sailing organization is. One problem I see with an article on this topic is that it will be wide open to become a huge advertising list for the hundreds of community sailing organizations which really isn't too helpful since that already exists on US Sailing. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "outline" but keep in mind that Wikipedia is not a how-to guide or instruction manual. I would think the articles Sailing and Yacht racing cover the subjects in a sufficiently encyclopedic manner. —Diiscool (talk) 21:31, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Yacht racer is different by sailor

There are two categories: Category:Yacht racers and Category:Sailors. I think that the first is for the sportsperson who praticate te Sailing (sport) and the second is, more generally, just for the person that are sailor (in sailing not sailing (sport)). I say that, because at the moment more sportsmen are in the mother category. What do you think about?. --Kasper2006 (talk) 07:15, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

The term "yacht racer" is very misleading the sport is called "sailing" not "yachting" to me a "Yacht racer" is referring to a sailor on a larger boat which are referred to as yachts. I think the general category "'Nationality' sailor" is fine to be used. If this is complemented with the sub category like Category:British sailors when the list becomes to long it can be broken down into sub categories like (e.g. olympians, pirate, recreational, america cup sailors, explorers, etc.) but this will only happen in a few cases. I think the Olympic sailors sub category is important though as this is used in other places within wikipedia. These categories need a majot tidy up there are lots of category tree errors. Positioning of World Champion Winners within Wikipedia

I had a conversion with Kasper2006 regarding sailing World Championships you can see the conversions here. As everyone is aware involved in the sport there are literally hundreds of Sailing World Championships so a page with all the sailing world champions isn't really an option like most other sports. Someone has tried it here List_of_World_Championships_medalists_in_sailing.

I spent quite a bit of time populating and updating this data onto each class page so that all the facts related to each class were in one place and hopefully someone from the class will keep things maintained. This has happened for the Farr 30 page were class members have maintained it for example. Recently without consensus this data has been removed and put on individual pages. What are other users thoughts on this as I don't want a battle of the undo button.

As a secondary point I am also suggesting this infobox is deleted Template:Sailing_worlds as it will just end up as a copy of Template:International Sailing Federation Events and Template:Classes of the International Sailing Federation Your thoughts are greatfully appreciated. Just one word, see: IAAF World Championships in Athletics and List of World Championships in Athletics medalists (men). It's the same for all sports and all wikies in the world. Same thing for the "enormous" template and the fact that there is this Template:AthleticsAt2011WorldChampionships with 24 pages an not a page infinite 2011 World Championships in Athletics with all results. Concepts are so simple ... but condone Y. he's just on wikipedia, but very willing. You can always find a precedent one way or another on wikipedia. The fact is you could never create as full a list like IAAF World Championships in Athletics because the data doesn't exist Worlds go back a lot further than 1983 in more displines in sailing. Yes we could take List_of_World_Championships_medalists_in_sailing and complete it so it became like List of World Championships in Athletics medalists (men) but this will be well over the page size limit and hard to read and link to. I cannot find a page devoted to the 800m World Championships on it own which is what I am really objecting to in sailing as per your recent page creations. Sailing is an equipment based sport hence why I would rather have the results with the relevant piece of equipment. What I really want is other peoples views on what is the best way forwards for the sailing. (p.s. Some sports have more than one WC, for instance Category:World Speed Skating Championships (three). 800 metres don't have a different held in a different country, Star and Finn (not in the years of ISAF WC, just from 2003), yes and not from now, but from the night of times. Still no views from other users? Clearly Kasper likes pages and I like everything to be in one place linked to the equipment. What do other users think? Here another example 5.5_Metre_(keelboat) is maintained and this isn't maintained List_of_World_Championships_medalists_in_sailing_(keelboat_classes)#5.5_metre I really would love to hear from others within the project I no both myself and kasper will go along with the concensus. I think the List_of_World_Championships_medalists_in_sailing lists are good for less known classes where the World Championship is not notable enough for a Wikipedia article and pointing to specifiv articles for more well-known championship. I also want to say that the 5.5 Metre (keelboat) article of today is to crowded with different winners of different champiosnhips that would fit better in 5.5 Metre World Championships, 5.5 Metre European Championships et cetera. Sailing at the 2000 Summer Olympics

Hello, I am not a sailor or sailing enthusiast but stumbled across this article while doing peripheral readings and have come to ask for some help. Upon first reading I thought the article had been vandalised but it seems, from the history, this was an article that was worked on by a user rather comprehensively as a project but subsequently abandoned and forgotten leaving it halfway between a real article and a placeholder article. I do not know enough about sailing, or Olympics for that matter, to fill in the blanks and repair the article so was hoping someone here with better knowledge could take a look and fix it up. –– Lid^(Talk) 16:17, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Yacht races and infoboxes

Hey, I recently found a whole bunch of articles for every year of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, most recent being the 2012 article. They all seem to have infoboxes, but the infoboxes are actually copy-pasted tables and not template transclusions. Incorrect image:GearAtYardarm.png

The image is labeled incorrectly: The footrope is labeled "brace"... but no idea how to term the cable labeled "footrope". I suspect that the "jackstays" should be a singular "jackstay"... and maybe there are still further inaccuracies? It'd be great if someone could have a look... and if someone knows how to correct the image, that'd also be a good deed as the image is generally very useful I think. Leaflet for Wikiproject Sailing at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

Where to start (editing, not sailing)

Hi

I've been browsing some of the sailing related articles, and I think they all need quite a lot of work.

The pages in my particular interest (at this stage) are Sailing and Single-handed sailing

The Sailing page is in parts way too technical and convoluted. Both pages make unsupported and unwarranted generalisations. Both have lots of opinion-based adjectives and 'weasel' words. ("Joshua Slocum's great voyage", "Reaching may, however, put the boat ...") Both make assertions about the universal regulation of sailing by ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing and COLREGS that aren't necessary, or necessarily true.

Anyway, I'm not here to make a 'whinge list'. I just wanted to provide a 'heads up' that I'm going to do some editing on those (and possibly other) sailing related pages, so anyone here can monitor what I'm doing. I'll leave explanations for any major changes on the relevant Talk pages, sometimes even before I make the change. Happy to have constructive discussions, before during and after.

I'll start on the Single Handed page as it's shorter and going to be easier to manage the changes.

Updating - Spanker (sail)

I'd actually seen the term tallboy and blooper in the book Fatal Storm by Rob Mundle in which it is mentioned that one of the boats in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race planned to use a blooper, but were unable to do so due to the weather conditions on the first day.

The reason given in the book for the attempt was that the sail had fallen out of fashion (I think also that it was illegal in some racing categories.) to the extent that when it came up in a casual converstion no-one but the person who bought it up had any idea what was being talked about. This lead to some research being done, the sails being sourced from a company in South Africa and tests being done which suggested that had conditions been right the boat (the "B-52") would have gained some advantage and possibly turned a few heads.

A quick websearch has bought up a few threads and Youtube videos which could be used to expand the article, which also needs a yacht sailplan to go with the full rigged ship.

It looks like there might be some interesting sailing history that needs covering. It's also starting to look like the two named sails actually refer to completely different sails rather than being different names for the same sail. Sources found to date are:

If you use the terms "navigational transit", "leading line", and "navigational range" in Google Ngram Viewer, "navigational transit" registers not at all. So, I suggest "Leading line (navigation)" with a redirect from "Range axis (navigation)". "Range" has a lot of ambiguities, since it is also a distance from present position. A search in Bartlett suggests that a "transit" is the line between two navigational markers, whereas a "leading line" is the intended course, whether determined by channel markers, or not. I wouldn't concur with the picture being the same as the "slippery hitch" that Aloha27 refers to. That hitch is simply a half hitch, tied with the bitter end looping back for quick release. Does WikiProject Sailing have a place to list new articles created so that they can be peer reviewed? Of note WikiProject Aircraft has Wikipedia:New articles (Aircraft), which allows new articles to be listed and anyone to watch the list and review the articles as they are created. It seems like a good idea to me, Ahunt. However, my main concern with most sailing articles is that they are in very poor shape, both with respect to style of writing and degree of proper citations. That is a good point and related to the issue I have brought here. The listing of new articles allows project members to review them while they are new and make changes to improve them right away. The problem of older articles being of low quality can be addressed with a similar list of "articles needing attention". On the aircraft project we have included a section in the new articles for review for articles that have been recently improved. When someone finds an older article that needs fixing they can rewrite it and then list it there when done, so that other editors can take a kick at it, too. Perhaps two new list pages could be made, one for articles that need work and the other for new articles, plus articles that have recently been rewritten and need reviewing. I can create both those pages here on the sailing project, if at least a few people are interested enough to watch them. - Ahunt (talk) 11:48, 23 June 2016 (UTC)

Ahunt, thanks for getting this started. I've been under the impression that these sorts of pages are automatically populated by a bot, not curated by individuals. See User:InceptionBot. For reference, here's a list of other projects using this bot. I've looked into this in the past, but I'll admit, I've been a little overwhelmed at the prospect of setting it up. It probably is possible to set up a bot to find new articles, but I have no idea how to do that. Of note Wikipedia:New articles (Aircraft) is added to by hand. This is actually probably preferable, as it engages people to watch the list, add to it and then read and edit the articles other editors post there for review. Okay I added an article 3000 (dinghy) to Wikipedia:WikiProject Sailing/Articles needing work, to show the normal format and such!

I am interested in how this works it is a great initiative I hope we can get the engagement to make it work. I certianly don't do enough referencing of my edits for example. If I have a dispute in an edit within sailing it generally ends up in one other only which is never good.

Engagement is the key! Over on the Aircraft Project there are enough of us active that we have created over 20,000 new aircraft type articles in the last few years, with more each month. It builds momentum. I have found enough refs to create a pile of new sailboat class articles, just need to get the time to start writing them and listing them at Wikipedia:WikiProject Sailing/New articles. Then I hope other editors will review them and make them better, plus feel motivated to add more too. That is all it takes. There is tons of work to be done, just need the people motivated to do it. I'll commit now to reviewing anyone else's articles that they list there. Having recently bought a new sailboat I am thinking that writing sailing articles might just be a way to keep "sailing" over the winter in Canada where I live. - Ahunt (talk) 11:21, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

I would appreciate your input on the proposed structural changes to Template_talk:Infobox_sailboat_specifications can you comment on that page with any input. For discussion here is that we have two templates doing the same thing as I have just noticed Template:Infobox_sailing_yacht. Template:Infobox sailing yacht seems to be for individual boats while Template:Infobox sailboat specifications is for a sailboat class. By using trasclusion count the former template is on 189 pages while the latter is used on 675 pages. - Ahunt (talk) 11:32, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

Would it make sense to add some informations at the top of each of the templates to indicate what they are for? Discussion on sailing vessel lists at Talk:Sailing ship

I added caïque here yesterday, which was reverted as the "article says it is a boat, not a ship". That's fair enough, but the list also has entries for Longship, Lugger, Luzzu, Tjotter, Koch (boat), Yacht and a Polynesian outrigger canoe. They are all about the same size, they all have sail plans, and they are all described interchangeably as boats, ships, or simply vessels.
So, are we in need of some criteria for inclusion here? The term “ship” is notoriously imprecise; what should be in, and what out? Moonraker12 (talk) 16:20, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

I appreciate your understanding, Moonraker12, and your appropriate question, here. Perhaps the answer is to make a new stand-alone list article, titled Types of sailing vessels, which would include vessels large and small. In this scenario, the imbedded list would disappear from this article and become a "See also".

A word of caution, there is a List of large sailing vessels, a List of large sailing yachts, and a Comparison of large sloops, each of which names vessels individually, not by type.

I thought about having it be Types of sailing craft, which would include iceboats and land yachts, but decided that they didn't contribute very much to the taxonomy, but would merit a "See also". Cheers, User:HopsonRoad 17:19, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

This is tricky: A separate "Types of sailing vessels" list would certainly solve the problem here: OTOH we already have (in addition to the ones you mentioned)

• The list at Sail plan#Types
• Another at Sailboat#Types
• A list of historical ship types
• The types of sailing vessels and rigs template
• A list of sailing boat types (which seems to list every kind of keelboat, yacht, dinghy, and multihull on the water)
• And a list of boat types (which just looks like a category page)

We can have too much of a good thing, I feel.

Another possibility maybe is to incorporate some of the text from the Ship article (esp. from Ship#Nomenclature to here and limit the entries to the ones mentioned; it would be useful to have them listed with definitions (I can never remember the difference between a barque and a barquentine, or a brig and a brigantine)

Thank you for these observations, Moonraker12. It seems that Sail plan#Types is properly about named sail plans, whereas Sailboat#Types is properly about generic categories of sailboats. List of sailing boat types should properly be named List of sailboat classes—it is divided by sailboat types into classes.

To follow your suggestion, one could define "ship" sufficiently broadly to encompass its changing historical meaning and then prune those entries that don't conform. One method would be to go to the link and, if it says "boat" eliminate it. One could next identify which of the "historical ship types" are sailing vessels and check to see if they are really boats, as well. Finally, one could then see what's left and come up with a definition like, "Here is a list of sailing vessels that were considered ships in their time, being used for commerce or war and carrying a substantial complement of crew". HopsonRoad: I was sort of thinking of things the other way round; to put in some text (we could do with a History section, or something dealing with the Evolution of the Sailing Ship) and list the vessels mentioned in that. This project covers the manufacturers of sailboats like Tanzer Industries , too, as well as designers, like Johann Tanzer. Why would we want to split this WikiProject into essentially dinghies and keelboats? Many manufacturers of this size of boats have built both, so it makes sense to keep them together. There is very little participation in this project the way it is, splitting it would only result in fewer people working on the articles. Sailing museums could be part of this project, but are also worked on by Wikipedia: WikiProject Museums. Ships are under Wikipedia: WikiProject Ships. - Ahunt (talk) 16:41, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

They are separate in real world. Quite often they have separate marinas.

Equipment and maintenance is different.

1. dinghies are separate from 2. 10m-30m yachts and separate from 3. ocean going sailing ships (with multiple masts)

Where I sail we have lots of dinghies and keelboats all sailing from the same facilities and sailing together on the water. Many of us (including me) have sailed both.

This WikiProject gathers together editors interested in improving articles about sailing, why would we want to break that up, especially when there are only about three of us actively working on it at present?

Actually the designer and manufacturer articles interface well with the boat articles. You can see a good example at Tanzer Industries. This has links to dinghies, keelboats, a designer biography and a list, plus a nav box that ties it all together. Together that family of related articles paints a picture of a manufacturer and the boats they built, all together. Wikipedia:WikiProject Aircraft does the same thing as in this case BDC Aero Industrie a manufacturer and the aircraft they build: BDC Aero Puma. The aircraft can't really be dealt with separately outside the aircraft project as the subjects are closely related, just like the boats and the manufacturer are tied here. - Ahunt (talk) 19:25, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

They were a company that built sailboats, so I would argue that the article is of interest to both WikiProjects. It is common to see talk page templates for multiple WikiProjects on many articles. Not a line, but solid piece of wood, several meters long, couple inches in diameter, but should be capable to handle weight of the floating vessel.

Some heavy motorboats are using it too.

US or North American Championships

An issue has come up at Paul Coleman (sailor), about whether the Clifford Day Mallory Cup that the article subject won in 1983 is properly described as the United States Adult Sailing Championship or the North American Championships. US Sailing refer to it as the former, which seems pretty authoritative, but contemporary sources such as this call it the North American Men's Sailing Championships. Has the event been reclassified since 1983, or is there some other explanation? Does anyone know? Cordless Larry (talk) 08:18, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

New boat models/specs

I am interested in joining the WikiProject with a keen interest in sailing topics. I am an owner of several boats with a couple of Pearson Yachts. I improved the Pearson Yachts page with more models and I am trying to "beef up" the Pearson coverage by adding new models - similar to what I see has been done with C&C Yachts. But I cannot get my first page approved with comments like "not enough independent coverage". I am confused what coverage is needed to add a new model and specs. Your article is having trouble with a lack on independent refs to establish notability and also the tone makes it sound more like a fan piece than an encyclopedia article. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Broach (sailing) - problems?

I have just highlighted some problems with this article on Talk:Broach (sailing) - whilst I believe I know enough to see what is wrong (I think!) I am not sure I have the resources to fix the problem with the article. Hence the appeal to other editors. If nothing else, the article is entirely based on modern racing yachts, whilst sailing vessels have been broaching for 100s of years before this type of craft came into existence.ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 20:49, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

Sourcing information on types/classes

Some of the best sources of information types/classes of leisure boats are in the yachting press. Sailing magazines used to have published indices, and you could request a reprint, typically if you were looking to buy an old boat and want to read the review when it first came out. This doesn't seem to be available now. Any ideas on how to access this huge mine of sources. I just got a reprint from Yachting World, from Oyster yachts, of one of their current models. If we could get hold of such things it would be great! Maybe when boatyards are still in existence we can ask them, but many have gone out of business. Billlion (talk) 10:32, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Ahunt Thanks for your comments about signing up for the WikiProject Sailing. I like the way you use tabs on your user page, so have borrowed the idea. The tab on "templates" is new to me so I've started with "Aamerican Aviation" because I have an Uncle Girard B. Henderson who bought Grumman American Aviation Corporation and later sold it. He invested in Gulfstream American Hustler and I have brochures of this airplane.

Perhaps you can review Elwood Walter, No. 7 – There is a discussion at Elwood Walter, No. 7 moved to draftspace whether there is the required in-depth coverage. I have made additional changes. Thanks for your note. Sure feel free to use anything you like from my user page. The same tab system is used here on WikiProject Sailing, too. I have read the article and it looks okay to me. The only changes I would make are to focus on the one boat that is the subject and leave the other related boats for their own articles, except for a passing mention of each, just to keep the article on topic, tight and focused. I have to admit I never use the "draft" process as it is slow, labourious and everything gets turned down over and over again. Naming convention classes

Folks,

Since some time I'm working on the documentation about the Olympic sailing regatta's, The (former) Olympic classes and their sailors and in special at this moment the Soling. In the pages of the classes the name of the class is used e.g. 12 Metre, 6 Metre, Soling and others. When there are more pages with the same name the name off the classes are made disambigues by adding the type of boat to the title like Flying Dutchman (dinghy) or Dragon (keelboat). So far so good. This convention works through out Wikipedia like in pages as Sailing at the 1968 Summer Olympics – Finn and Category:Sailors at the 1968 Summer Olympics – Flying Dutchman. However there is one series of names in use that is using another convention. That are the categories that groups the sailors in a certain class like the Finn sailors. The category name in that case is Category:Finn class sailors or Category:Star class sailors. In my opinion this should be Category:Finn sailors or Category:Star sailors. This applies as well for categories like Category:Flying Dutchman class world champions what in my opinion should be Category:Flying Dutchman world champions and so on. The current situation has, in my opinion, also a side effect that is that it reads as a qualification of the sailor. Category:Soling class sailors tells me that the sailor is from Soling class. This sounds to me like "Triple A" or "Bio food". This comes very clear by the Category:Star class sailors. This can also generate questions like: who is a better sailor an Laser class sailor or a 49er class sailor. I spent most of my life (over 60 years) in sailing Internationally (former) Olympic classes and I hardly met anyone who talks that he sails the Yngling class or a 470 class. They speak that they sail Yngling or 470 and so on.

• Proposal: change the Category names from x class … to x …. For example Soling class sailors in to Soling sailors and Flying Dutchman class world champions into Flying Dutchman world champions.

• Oppose anything that removes the word "class". Without the word "class", many of the subcategories of Category:Sailors (sport) by class will have a very different meaning. For example:

• Category:420 class sailors is clear, but without the word "class" it would be Category:420 sailors , which sounds like a large group.
• Category:2.4 Metre class sailors is clear, but without the word "class" it would be Category:2.4 Metre sailors, which sounds like a group of very tall sailors.
• [:Category:Solo class sailors]] is clear, but without the word "class" it would be Category:Solo sailors, i.e. single-handers
• Dragon Genoa's suggestion of changing Category:Star class sailors to Category:Star sailors creates a name whose primary meaning is very good sailors, rather than sailors of a particular class of boat.
• Dragon Genoa's suggestion of changing Category:Finn class sailors to Category:Finn sailors creates a name whose primary meaning is sailors who are Finns, rather than sailors of a particular class of boat.

Articles about classes: general info and first sentence

1. I am not an expert but I've noticed that at least for articles about olympic classes some important general info is missing for most of them. The information in question is, is the class in question One-Design / Monotype class or Construction class / Development class?

2. First sentence. Some classes have good first sentence that summarizes the boat like Flying Dutchman (FD) is a 20-foot one-design high-performance two-person monohull racing dinghy., The 470 (Four-Seventy) is a double-handed monohull [info under 1. is missing] planing dinghy with a centreboard, Bermuda rig, and centre sheeting., The 49er and 49er FX is a two-handed [info under 1. is missing] skiff-type high-performance sailing dinghy. but there are other that have insufficient sentences like The O-Jolle – (Olympiajolle) – was created as the Monotype class for the, The 12 m2 Sharpie was designed in 1931 by the Kröger Brothers in Warnemünde, Germany., [Windglider] For the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics,[1] the Olympic board choice was between the original Windsurfer One Design, [Division II (windsurf board)] The 1988 Olympics,[1] saw the introduction of Lechner Division II boards.

3. Monohulls/Catamarans used at olympics are small, described as Dinghy-sized or Beach catamarans to distinguish them from regular catamarans, as keelboat is distinguished from sailing yacht. I think the first sentence of the article about those classes should contain that size attribute. The Tornado is a double handed multihull class , The Nacra 17 is a performance catamaran used for sailing.

Sailors Notability

I am having wikipedia policies quoted at me as I try to create pages for every competitor in the Vendee Globe the policy that keeps getting quoted is Wikipedia:Notability (sports) which you will notes creates policies for lots of none international sports. Unfortunately sailing relies on the Olympic sports section which is broad enough to really cover our diverse sport. For this reason I would like to draft a section and ask if anyone is hot on wikipedia procedures and how we then get it properly accepted for inclusion in the section.

(The logic is as follows:
Clause 1 is inline with every other olympic sport
Clause 2 get the world champions in without being overly open to be honest I hope no one creates pages more than the significant
Clause 3 gets the america cup, PWA World Tour, The Ocean Race (but not the Corinthian events)
Clause 4 get the adventures in world sailing cannot used for these as they don't endorse these events
Clause 5 Limits record holders to those that actually mean something and stop discussion over what is a record
Clause 6 this notability section doesn't seem limited to just athlete so who else do we want

Note: this excludes all national level athlete and is quite strict on World Championship competitors given the 120+ titles sailing award and excludes coaches so could be argued to be significantly harder than other sports if we need to justify it. Your input would be gratefully appreciate as would someone able to take this forwards as I do not understand WP Policies to this level.

Support conditionally. First, I think it would be useful to have an SN in this area. Second, I definitely agree with #'s 1, 2, 3, and 5; and I'm not adverse to #4, but I don't have enough knowledge about the sport to comment on it. However, I do have an issue with #6. Support in principle - As above, a WP:SNG for sailing would be really useful. I don't know enough about sailing to comment on the merits of individual races, so will leave that to those with more knowledge. A definitive list of "World Sailing recognized World Championships" and "World Sailing Special Events" would be useful. Designer of equipment used for notable events may need further clarification. Does it refer solely to major item, such as the designer of the yacht, or to lesser things such as an improved fitting? As this is a notability guideline, you can't include style items such as an infobox. Nationality can also be problematic in some cases. --John B123 (talk) 00:06, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

All sensible comments happy to lose the designer, I just wanted to promote thought as in a lot of ways the engineers are as important as the sailors in some parts of the sport. Other sports bring coaches etc into the there notability section. I think if you research the Vendee Globe and its media profile and heritage you will quickly understand why it is important. Lets hope we get some more contributors get involved so we can present it on the group behalf. I agree it should also go in WP:NSPORTS thanks for bring this to our attention. Hard-won experience: It is fine to discuss this here, but please note that a few editors on a WikiProject cannot just create a new Wikipedia policy or even a Wikipedia editing guideline. We have run into this on other WikiProjects over very longstanding ways of doing things, only to be told that any project consensus will end up as an "essay" and must comply with the existing policies in place. If you want to change the policies then the only way to do that is to propose changes to the actual polices. Warning: this is hard to do. Wikipedia procedure and policy are something I avoid I just add content I believe is of significant interest in a factual way. The problem is the policy are being enforced by people that don't understand the subject matter. So we need a policy for sailing fit for purpose. I plan to move this discussion to the talk section of the policy but it would really help me to have the concensus of this specialist group. Score standards for sailing events

Hi WikiProject Sailing Team, I have been helping to update the scores and add citations for the sailing events for various countries at Tokyo 2020 Olympics and have noticed that different countries have different standards with regards to the scores. Can I clarify on the following with regards to standardization?

For:
1) () bracket i.e exclude scores. Should excluded scores be strike-through or not?
2) Do scores with Flags e.g. UFD/BFD/DSQ/DNF/DNE need to be displayed? I see quite a few pages with FLAG only with no scores and these Flag abbreviations are strike-though accordingly depending on whether there are brackets for that score(I saw a DNE score with no brackets). I have re-add the scores and strike-though the scores instead of the FLAG abbreviations for now but thought to clarify here.

3) For countries with sailors who do not qualify for medal races, is it ok to add the current citations results up to today without medal races as it's not applicable to them?(medal race not done at this point)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Help needed, Madagascan traditional(?) rig

Does any Wikipedia editor with an understanding of traditional sailing rigs have any knowledge of the sailing outrigger canoes (Lakana, also called pirogue) of Madagascar? Even better would be someone with photos or video footage that show how a certain rig configuration works.

The problem is with the article Lakana, which also feeds into Austronesian peoples – and it concerns the only picture on Commons of that craft, which is shown here. The question is, what rig is on the boat in the picture? How can we prove that?

There are two traditional rigs that are known to exist, one is lateen and the other is a mastless rig (yes, that is right), as in[5]. The mastless rig uses two vertical booms to extend the sail out of the hull and they have a distinctive V-shaped configuration when viewed from astern. It is essentially a downwind rig and is used by the fishermen to sail out in the morning on the land breeze and back in the afternoon on the sea breeze. Because it only has one surface of the sail on the windward side, it is (technically) a square sail (as opposed to fore and aft, which can have either surface on the windward side).

I don't think the picture in Commons shows either of these rig types. I have found some other photos on line of what appears to be the same type of vessel. They are [6],[7],[8],[9]. Here is a video of a French model-maker[10] – at 9:18 is a labelled diagram of the component parts.

I believe that this is a third rig type that has not been included in the historic, traditional rigs that have been recorded. Unfortunately, another editor insists that the image in Commons is of the mastless, V-sparred configuration, downwind sailing rig. I don't think that is right, but I do not have a source to prove it. I won't say here what I believe the rig shown is, as I don't want to prejudice anyone's thinking.

I think the ideal way to prove things would be a video of one of these boats changing tack. Do you either have such a video, or a better idea?

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. It looks a user has blended the categories Category:Sailboat type designs by (Name of designer) and Category:Sailing yachts by (Name of designer) in Category:Sailboat type designs by designer. If it is the will of the project to merge the two categories (sailboat type designs and individual sailing yacht designs), the categories should be renamed to a name fitting both types. World Sailing Sailor Profile and Referencing

A lot of posts have recently been adjusted to User:AHunt who has concerns regarding referencing. It seems to me that being able to utilise one data entry so that <{{>flagathlete|Paul Elvstrøm|DEN<}}> or Paul Elvstrøm (DEN) could be utilised as the following <{{>flagathlete|Paul Elvstrøm|DENPE1<}}> so providing referencing by <Paul Elvstrøm at World Sailing>

Maybe the following template Template:Sailor could be adjusted to achieve this as touching flagathlete would be highly political.

My knowledge of coding isn't good enough todo this.
