Greetings!

Here is the 6th issue of the Bots Newsletter. You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future newsletters by adding/removing your name from this list.

Dr. T. M. Sounderarajan

Why you delete TMS from the list? Balan Nair (talk) 16:26, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

It wasn't clear that there was an article on this topic already. Entries should not be added to lists of people unless there is already an article on that list entry. This can be made clearer if you link to the person's article [[like this]]. IronGargoyle (talk) 00:38, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

Natesh Pillai

Hello,

Why did you delete Natesh Pillai from the notable alumni for IIT Madras? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bayesian81 (talkcontribs) 20:56, 9 September 2018 (UTC)

Entries in lists of people need to have their own Wikipedia article or independent evidence of group membership and notability (see the rule at WP:LISTPEOPLE). A faculty bio by the subject is not evidence of notability. IronGargoyle (talk) 21:24, 9 September 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Big Tips Texas

On 19 September 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Big Tips Texas, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Big Tips Texas features scantily-clad waitresses from Redneck Heaven, a breastaurant whose body-paint events led to nudity law changes in at least three Texas municipalities? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Big Tips Texas), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, IronGargoyle. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Bde Maka Ska

There is already consensus on Talk:Bde Maka Ska supporting that is is the former name, therefore I don't see it necessary to start a new topic to change it. The IP user is the one going against consensus. Thank you. oncamera(t) 21:57, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

The consensus was for a move. "Formerly" vs "also" was never discussed. Even if it was, that is not an excuse for violating WP:3RR. IronGargoyle (talk) 22:03, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Alameda Science and Technology Institute

Hello there! I was wondering about why I can't edit the Alameda Science and Technology Institute's page. I would love to help, so get back to me as soon as you can! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brack Peeepol 123 (talkcontribs)

It looks like another administrator protected the page from editing by new editors. The page was experiencing high levels of vandalism. I would suggest either waiting until the protection has expired, making suggestions on the article talk page, or contacting that administrator directly. Why do I keep getting undone

What am I doing wrong, I am new — Preceding unsigned comment added by ImaDiloman (talkcontribs) 22:12, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

A lot of your edits are introducing your own personal analysis and opinion into the articles. This is prohibited by Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. For other articles (like the one on the Passport of Bhutan), you are changing the style of English when there is no need. Unless an article has ties to a particular style of English (e.g., an article about Elizabeth II should use British English), the preexisting style of English in the article should be maintained. IronGargoyle (talk) 22:19, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Why are you accusing me of being a troll on someone else’s talk page? If you have a problem with me, why would you go behind my back rather than address it with me directly? Mustymuff (talk) 02:40, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
Because you are a troll. Just look at the edit you keep trying to put on the Route 62 article lolz. Well, you have fun now Famartin (talk) 02:46, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Premature

I restored Goest Ryder to List of people from Pittsburgh because for the moment he still has a WP article. Yes Ryder's article is at AFD and at the moment looks like it will end as a delete. But I've seen an AFD closed as a Snow delete[1], then be reopened[2], and have a final outcome of no consensus[3]. Let this article stand till the AFD is finished. If it ends in delete, I'll be happy to remove it....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 15:15, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

Deletion

Why you deleted Mahesh Mahadev (Music Composer) article Wp-maxindia (talk) 17:58, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

I didn't. I only deleted a duplicate copy to make way for a move. It seems though that the article was recreated inappropriately from an earlier copy that was already deleted. This was done by another administrator. Please review our guidelines on notability before making further articles. IronGargoyle (talk) 18:20, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

Request

How to get back the article Wp-maxindia (talk) 18:30, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

You can ask the administrator who deleted it or create a request at deletion review, but given the fact that it also seems to have been a copyright violation, I don't suspect anyone will be willing to undelete it for you. IronGargoyle (talk) 19:58, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

Ignorance

It seems that you don't know the grammar rules that apply to the word "however", and nor do you know the rules that govern when bold face should be used in articles. If you don't know these things, what makes you think you can contribute to an encyclopaedia? 89.115.226.154 (talk) 22:59, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

There was a typo in your earlier edit which strongly suggested nonconstructive editing. While it's clear now that it was inadvertent on your part, the removal of the edit was still warranted. IronGargoyle (talk) 02:05, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
@IronGargoyle: I want to assume good faith but this IP address's edit summary history and the "what makes you think you can contribute to an encyclopaedia" statement above should constitute a warning of incivility. I warned this IP address yesterday with using snide remarks in edit summaries (WP:ESDONTS) but they reverted it. – The Grid (talk) 17:18, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

List of Old Emanuels

It seems that you are an annoying pedant who does nothing but change Wikipedia pages for subjects you know nothing about and have no first hand experience of. The example I am referring to is your constant random changing of the List of Old Emanuels, that being the long list of alumni of Emanuel School in London, England.

You did not attend the school, I did and am thus far better qualified to comment. You are obviously based in the United States, it stands out a mile. Stick to random subjects you know something about and do something with your life besdes living on Wikipedia being a boring pedant. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MickTravis If (talkcontribs) 01:49, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Unless they stop soon, I believe this page may need temporary protection. Seems like some meatpuppeting vandals are at play. Home Lander (talk) 21:54, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Untitled numbered episode titles

If you did not know RTitle is used for these as they are not episode names and is standard practice. 119.224.3.221 (talk) 01:55, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

Reversion reverted

Hello, I've just reverted your GF reversion in the page about Lewis Carroll. Please see User_talk:Theroadislong#Help_for_a_noob, in which you can see my brain-dead paranoid comment, my embarrassed realization of the nature of my comment, its deletion, and my new comment. If you're suspicious (and why shouldn't you be?), feel free to take a quick look for "Aryaman" within the novel in question. -- Hoary (talk) 03:22, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

Deletion

Please explain deletion in Brewing in Oregon? I am unfamiliar with you reason, (rv unreferenced nn). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Madcowbrewing (talkcontribs) 16:30, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

List entries like this must be referenced with substantial coverage in independent (not affiliated with the organization) and reliable sources. You also should not make edits about organizations you are affiliated with. IronGargoyle (talk) 23:54, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

Ok...well we were just mentioned in oregonlive.com and other sources, but cool! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Madcowbrewing (talkcontribs) 18:08, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

You just reverted 17 entries I added for Fort Collins, CO, with "rv unreferenced nn." Can you explain what is required? I see several entries with no link to a website and no footnote (City Star, Crow Hop, etc), so I'm confused why they're OK and my entries weren't. Is a link to the company website sufficient? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Garyfritz (talkcontribs) 20:43, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

I simply missed them. I have removed them, thank you. Unless there are reliable third-party references (i.e., not links to the company website), or the breweries have articles themselves, entries should not be added to lists like these. IronGargoyle (talk) 00:02, 14 May 2019 (UTC)
Hello, IronGargoyle. Since you're interested in breweries, or at least Wikipedia articles about them, you could try adding appropriate third-party references when other editors add new, unreferenced entries. It's actually pretty fun to do web searches to find the references, and then to add them to the articles. And of course doing so improves the articles themselves. Why not give it a shot? You might end up liking it. Mudwater (Talk) 22:50, 13 May 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. In my editorial judgement, lists such as these should only contain entries which have Wikipedia articles themselves. I certainly acknowledge that there is not always consensus for my perspective on every list. Removing the unreferenced entries and adding the references are both acceptable ways to comply with the broader consensus guideline of WP:LISTCOMPANY. It's fine that you like to add these references, but I have no interest in doing so myself. I have (particularly lately) limited time on the project and this is not how I would like to spend it. IronGargoyle (talk) 00:08, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello IronGargoyle, you wrote " In 2000, Lee won a silver medal at the World University Championships in Shanghai." According Universiade in 2000 there was not such a event. ???? Greetings --Tsor (talk) 09:13, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

I don't know. The source I probably used back when I created the article is dead. I'll look into seeing if I can find an archive of it somewhere. It's possible I read something wrong, so if I can't verify this I will probably remove it entirely. IronGargoyle (talk) 23:31, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Deletion

Hello I noticed my addition to U Michigan alumni page was entirely deleted again. I include several references, one of which was even an official website of the state government of Michigan, which would seem to be a reliable source. Was that you deleting or someone else? Thanks Cleantruth (talk) 22:49, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

Multiple people removed your addition. The sources you added later were not independent sources. While they may prove that the person you added exists, they do not provide evidence of notability. Please see WP:LISTPEOPLE. IronGargoyle (talk) 23:55, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Bots Newsletter, August 2019

Greetings!

Here is the 7th issue of the Bots Newsletter, a lot happened since last year's newsletter! You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future newsletters by adding/removing your name from this list.

Highlights for this newsletter include:

ARBCOM
  • Nothing of note happened. Just like we like it.
BAG

BAG members are expected to be active on Wikipedia to have their finger on the pulse of the community. After two years without any bot-related activity (such as posting on bot-related pages, posting on a bot's talk page, or operating a bot), BAG members will be retired from BAG following a one-week notice. Retired members can re-apply for BAG membership as normal if they wish to rejoin the BAG.

We thank former members for their service and wish Madman a happy retirement. We note that Madman and BU Rob13 were not inactive and could resume their BAG positions if they so wished, should their retirements happens to be temporary.

BOTDICT

Two new entries feature in the bots dictionary

BOTPOL
  • Activity requirements: BAG members now have an activity requirement. The requirements are very light, one only needs to be involved in a bot-related area at some point within the last two years. For purpose of meeting these requirements, discussing a bot-related matter anywhere on Wikipedia counts, as does operating a bot (RFC).
  • Copyvio flag: Bot accounts may be additionally marked by a bureaucrat upon BAG request as being in the "copyviobot" user group on Wikipedia. This flag allows using the API to add metadata to edits for use in the New pages feed (discussion). There is currently 1 bot using this functionality.
  • Mass creation: The restriction on mass-creation (semi-automated or automated) was extended from articles, to all content-pages. There are subtleties, but content here broadly means whatever a reader could land on when browsing the mainspace in normal circumstances (e.g. Mainspace, Books, most Categories, Portals, ...). There is also a warning that WP:MEATBOT still applies in other areas (e.g. Redirects, Wikipedia namespace, Help, maintenance categories, ...) not explicitely covered by WP:MASSCREATION.
BOTREQs and BRFAs

As of writing, we have...

  • 20 active BOTREQs, please help if you can!
  • 14 open BRFAs and 1 BRFA in need of BAG attention (see live status).
  • In 2018, 96 bot task were approved. An AWB search shows approximately 29 were withdrawn/expired, and 6 were denied.
  • Since the start of 2019, 97 bot task were approved. Logs show 15 were withdrawn/expired, and 15 were denied.
  • 10 inactive bots have been deflagged (see discussion). 5 other bots have been deflagged per operator requests or similar (see discussion).

How to deal with editing while under attach - advice needed please

Dear IronGargoyle, Thank you for the advice. I am not involved in an edit war, though it is good to hear the terminology, because I certainly feel under attack. I am trying to create my first page. I have found an interesting subject, read widely on it, found sources for it and written it carefully. I did not expect it to be sabotaged, filled with pejorative language and turned into a distorted page of misinformation. I have no personal vested interest beyond caring about producing a good wikipedia page. I feel that someone else does want to sabotage it and I am not sure why. I would like to report this transgression so that I can complete the page I have been working hard to write. Many thanks in advance for some calm and helpful advice. Invite to Revive WikiProject:Shopping Centers!

Hey there, IronGargoyle! I'm Windyshadow32, a new member of the sadly inactive Wikiproject Shopping Centers. I am trying to revive this project to highlight the unique stories of malls across the country and the world especially as we lose more and more of them. Undoubtedly, we will lose shopping malls due to the challenges we face at this moment. I want to document these stories before it is too late, but I can't do it without your help. I can tell by your contributions to Wikipedia and the pages that you have created that you care about retail and will bring the right insight to the project. Personally, I'm honestly a big fan of the deadmalls.com page that you created. I would love to have your assistance in assessing the qualities of the different articles and placing them in the proper categories. Please let me know if you'd be willing to help; I really appreciate it!

List of symphony orchestras

Hello. Would you please explain to me why you deleted some of Japanese orchestras from the "List of symphony orchestras"?

I understand that these orchestras don't have independent English articles, but I don't think that is a sufficient reason to delete them. The orchestras I added all have Japanese articles, and they are all full members of Association of Japanese Symphony Orchestras (as well as other orchestras that are already in the lists except for Saito Kinen Orchestra). This association is approved as aggregate corporation by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Agency for Cultural Affairs) of Japanese Government. This means that the full members of this association are officially recognized as Japanese professional orchestras which hold subscription concerts with high quality and frequency. These orchestras are also widely recognized as professional orchestras in Japanese society.

Furthermore, the main purpose of this list is to provide publics with sufficient and accurate informations about symphony orchestras in the world. If there are professional orchestras that don't have English articles, you could simply attach accurate references, which I did. For these reasons, the orchestras that I added shouldn't be deleted just because they don't have English articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WanseiN115 (talkcontribs) 08:24, 21 November 2020 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not a directory. A reference to a directory of symphony orchestras for which those orchestras are members is also not an independent source. It doesn't matter if they have articles on the Japanese Wikipedia. Different Wikipedias have different standards for inclusion, and a Wikipedia article alone is not a reliable source. Redlinks vs non-notable

I'm sorry, can you explain where in WP:LISTPEOPLE it says redlinks are unacceptable? Powers T 17:42, 4 March 2021 (UTC)

It's clearly spelled out at WP:LISTPEOPLE that there must be evidence of both notability and group membership. I suppose technically you could demonstrate notability by footnoting a redlink with references that demonstrate substantial independent coverage in reliable sources. There was no such evidence for the redlinks I think you are referring to. Note too that this is the minimum standard. Articles can adopt a more stringent standard for inclusion. IronGargoyle (talk) 18:25, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
If I may, I think you may be misreading it. It only says that the person must meet the notability requirement, and that there be reliable evidence of group membership. It does not say the evidence of notability must be presented (that's only for exceptions such as people notable for a single event). Powers T 18:18, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
I’m not misreading it. WP:LISTPEOPLE says an entry must meet the notability requirement. The phrase “notability requirement” has a link to that relevant policy. If you read that linked policy, you will see that claims of notability require evidence. That’s not going to change if we’re applying notability to a page or if we’re applying notability to a list entry. How are you going to know if something is notable without evidence? I could declare that my cat is notable. I would hope that you would demand some proof. IronGargoyle (talk) 19:56, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
I guess I don't read it the same way. Still, it seems the proper procedure would be to ask for evidence of notability to be added, rather than just deleting everything that's red. Powers T 15:09, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

I want to complain as well, especially in terms of the composers deleted from the string quartet composer list. I had even added links to their homepage in case you know little about classical music (especially contemporary classical music). These are composers played by f.ex. major American orchestras or get composition assignments from the BBC Last night of the Proms. Extremely notable people who deserve a wikipedia article, and you simply delete them as spam. If you don't know anything about the field you are editing, leave the job to somebody else, please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.71.208.147 (talkcontribs)

As detailed above, adding redlinks without reliable independent sources violates WP:LISTPEOPLE. A link to the subject’s own webpage is not independent and further violates WP:ELNO. I suggest reviewing those policies. If after reviewing these policies and WP:NOTABILITY, you still feel like these people warrant having articles, you are welcome to make articles for them. Please will you revert both your changes to the article and the TFA blub. The "automatic bodily functions" text was discussed on talk Talk:Dementia with Lewy bodies/Archive 3#Lead rewrite, a discussion where many experienced editors participated. Your new text "autonomic nervous system function" is jargon and should be avoided in the lead sentence if at all possible. A Google search for "automatic bodily functions" demonstrates lay websites use this term to explain what the autonomic nervous system regulates. This is neither incorrect language, nor does it lack precision. @Ajpolino, Graham Beards, Lukelahood, and SandyGeorgia:, who worked on the text. -- Colin°Talk 20:56, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Automatic and autonomic are not the same thing. I’m not self-reverting. I boldly added a new wording because I didn’t feel either of the previous wordings were ideal and I am an expert in a related field. “Autonomic nervous system” isn’t jargon. Anyone with a basic understanding of biology or psychology should know what it is. If they don’t — that’s why we link things. Obviously if there is consensus to change the wording to something else, I will defer to that. IronGargoyle (talk) 22:23, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
Nobody is arguing that automatic and autonomic are the same thing. Autonomic is a relatively recent word that has two meanings in most dictionaries. One is being an adjective of autonomous: self controlled, functionally independent. The other is being related to the autonomic nervous system. So this modern word has failed to find usage outside of (a) learned writers talking about state sovereignty or social models or (b) part of our nervous system. It is not an everyday word and indeed nearly none of our readers will ever encounter it beyond some biology class they sat in as a child and have long forgotten. Being an "expert in a related field" rather disqualifies you from judging whether the average reader will comprehend it. While linking can help, our guidelines ask we do not rely on that (many reusers of Wikipedia, which are our purpose too, as a free-content project, do not include links -- think of Alexa for example).
Including an opaque technical term in the lead sentence is a big signal to the average reader that this article is way too difficult for you, so don't even bother with the lead, never mind the body. Including it in the main page is a worse sin. It is on the main page because we want people to read "Dementia with Lewy bodies". If they have to click and read another article before they can understand the first sentence of this one, do you really think they would? The blurb has to serve as an immediately accessible hook to encourage further reading of that article. In body text, we could explain the term in parenthesis, or replace the term with a longer explanation and put the term in parenthesis. This is mainly appropriate for when the term is vital to the reader's understanding of the subject. That may be the case for this topic, though an understanding of the manifestations wrt bodily functions is likely more useful to the reader than core nervous-system function and composition.
The reason that "automatic bodily functions" was chosen after discussion on talk is that it is fully comprehensible by the average reader. As you say, the words are not the same thing, and "autonomic bodily functions", which got inserted into the article by a newbie, isn't a thing. One's heart does not control its own beats, lungs their own breaths and pupil its own dilation. However, they are automatic and occur without thought. Many professionally written lay-targetting websites explain that the autonomic nervous system regulates automatic bodily functions. -- Colin°Talk 08:24, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Photo deletion

Hi. I’m not sure if I’m doing this right, but I wanted to discuss something with IronGargoyle? If this is the right place to do so, I have some questions for you. Thank you! Geo Lightspeed7 (talk) 12:48, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

This is fine, although the deletion occurred on Wikimedia Commons, so you could also contact me on my talk page there. One image is already deleted, so it would be more appropriate to contact the administrator who deleted it (it should tell you this if you click on the link to the deleted file). For the other image, follow the instructions on the message that I left on your talk page if you happen to be the rights holder. IronGargoyle (talk) 13:35, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

Ok! I will get back to you later this afternoon regarding my questions. It appears as though I have a lot to learn yet! Thank you! I appreciate your assistance! Geo Lightspeed7 (talk) 18:17, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Bots Newsletter, December 2021
BRFA activity by month

Welcome to the eighth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Maintainers disappeared to parts unknown... bots awakening from the slumber of æons... hundreds of thousands of short descriptions... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.

Our last issue was in August 2019, so there's quite a bit of catching up to do. Due to the vast quantity of things that have happened, the next few issues will only cover a few months at a time. This month, we'll go from September 2019 through the end of the year. I won't bore you with further introductions — instead, I'll bore you with a newsletter about bots.

Overall

  • Between September and December 2019, there were 33 BRFAs. Of these, Green checkmarkY 25 were approved, and 8 were unsuccessful (Dark red X symbolN2 3 denied, Blue question mark? 3 withdrawn, and Expired 2 expired).

September 2019

Look! It's moving. It's alive. It's alive... It's alive, it's moving, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, IT'S ALIVE!
  • Green checkmarkY Monkbot 16, DannyS712 bot 60, Ahechtbot 6, PearBOT 3, Qbugbot 3 · Dark red X symbolN2 DannyS712 bot 5, PkbwcgsBot 24 · Blue question mark? DannyS712 bot 61, TheSandBot 4
  • TParis goes away, UTRSBot goes kaput: Beeblebrox noted that the bot for maintaining on-wiki records of UTRS appeals stopped working a while ago. TParis, the semi-retired user who had previously run it, said they were "unlikely to return to actively editing Wikipedia", and the bot had been vanquished by trolls submitting bogus UTRS requests on behalf of real blocked users. While OAuth was a potential fix, neither maintainer had time to implement it. TParis offered to access to the UTRS WMFLabs account to any admin identified with the WMF: "I miss you guys a whole lot [...] but I've also moved on with my life. Good luck, let me know how I can help". Ultimately, SQL ended up in charge. Some progress was made, and the bot continued to work another couple months — but as of press time, UTRSBot has not edited since November 2019.
  • Article-measuring contest resumed: The list of Wikipedians by article count, which had lain dead for several years, was triumphantly resurrected by GreenC following a bot request.

October 2019

November 2019

Now you're thinking with portals.

December 2019

In the next issue of Bots Newsletter:
What's next for our intrepid band of coders, maintainers and approvers?

  • What happens when two bots want to clerk the same page?
  • What happens when an adminbot goes hog wild?
  • Will reFill ever get fixed?
  • What's up with ListeriaBot, anyway?
  • Python 3.4 deprecation? In my PyWikiBot? (It's more likely than you think!)

These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the January 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out!

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

so—

hi there, IronGargoyle. I've... understandably thought a lot about what happened, and now that the RfA's over, I wanted to offer you an apology—I'll try to keep it brief. I let my emotions cloud my better judgment for a long time, and it caused me to behave crassly on more than one occasion. No one deserves to be treated that way, especially not for offering criticism—i'm truly sorry.

p.s., i saw some users allege that I pinged you on purpose when adding your comment to the archive, as an attack. that was totally not the case—in keeping with the theme of this whole incident, that was just some shortsighted stupidity on my part. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 10:48, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

Bots Newsletter, January 2022
BRFA activity by month

Welcome to the ninth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Vicious bot-on-bot edit warring... superseded tasks... policy proposals... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.

After a long hiatus between August 2019 and December 2021, there's quite a bit of ground to cover. Due to the vastness, I decided in December to split the coverage up into a few installments that covered six months each. Some people thought this was a good idea, since covering an entire year in a single issue would make it unmanageably large. Others thought this was stupid, since they were getting talk page messages about crap from almost three years ago. Ultimately, the question of whether each issue covers six months or a year is only relevant for a couple more of them, and then the problem will be behind us forever.

Of course, you can also look on the bright side – we are making progress, and this issue will only be about crap from almost two years ago. Today we will pick up where we left off in December, and go through the first half of 2020.

Overall
In the first half of 2020, there were 71 BRFAs. Of these, Green checkmarkY 59 were approved, and 12 were unsuccessful (with Dark red X symbolN2 8 denied, Blue question mark? 2 withdrawn, and Expired 2 expired).

Issues and enquiries are typically expected to be handled on the English Wikipedia. Pages reachable via unified login, like a talk page at Commons or at Italian Wikipedia could also be acceptable [...] External sites like Phabricator or GitHub (which require separate registration or do not allow for IP comments) and email (which can compromise anonymity) can supplement on-wiki communication, but do not replace it.

Conclusion

  • What's next for our intrepid band of coders, maintainers and approvers?
  • Will Citation bot ever be set free to roam the project?
  • What's the deal with all those book links that InternetArchiveBot is adding to articles?
  • Should we keep using Gerrit for MediaWiki?
  • What if we had a day for bots to make cosmetic edits?

These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the February 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out!

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of people from Jammu and Kashmir, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Jammu and Kashmir. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

I'm a little confused by the edit comment "nope". Why did you remove the information concerning alternative language links? eARTspI . TOK . 3bs 22:11, 17 April 2022 (UTC)

Two reasons: It was cluttering up the introduction and it was encouraging editors to not follow WP:LISTPEOPLE. IronGargoyle (talk) 22:16, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
would you mind taking the time next time to add a proper edit comment. I do my best to always write what happens. When someone comes and changes things, especially an elder editor, leaving proper comments is at least courtesy. eARTspI . TOK . 3bs 22:19, 17 April 2022 (UTC)

July 2022

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Hannah Gadsby: Nanette. This means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be although other editors disagree. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes and work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Binksternet (talk) 02:32, 26 July 2022 (UTC)
