Afghanistan Leaflets

Hi, Geo. You recently uploaded a bunch of Afghanistan Leaflets. You added the "This image is a work of a Central Intelligence Agency employee, taken or made during the course of the person's official duties." tag. I checked the website but i could not confirm that. Actually i got some warnings telling me to contact the website's owner in case i would like to use images. Did you talk to the guys of the website or could you give me a link where it says that these images were taken by the CIA? Thanks! 78rose (talk) 06:32, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I uploaded additional images to the wikimedia commons. Some of those images were uploaded years ago.

These images were all produced by officials at some organs of the US government. Herbafghan.html, the document that uses this image, says:

"On 12 September, the day following the attack, Tactical PSYOP Detachment (TPD) 940 began target audience analysis of Afghanistan, including the Afghan populace, the Taliban, and al Qaida. On 4 October 2001 a 95-man Joint Psychological Operations Task Force (JPOTF) was activated at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and placed under the operational control of the Central Command (CENTCOM). The 3rd Psychological Operations battalion deployed to Kuwait that same month to support Operation Enduring Freedom."

Thank you for your reply and link. I checked the page and nowhere does it say that all these images where produced by officials at some organs of the US government during their official duty. Am i missing something? The text you quote does not show that either. I do believe a lot of these images from the leaflets were produced by Herbert A. Friedman. I just want to make sure we do not infringe on his rights. What noticeboard at commons would be the right place to discuss this? Thanks! 78rose (talk) 13:31, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Are you disputing that Friedman says he collected leaflets distributed by the US government?

No, but their is a difference between the actual leaflets and the images of the leaflets. The images were most likely taken by Herbert A. Friedman. 78rose (talk) 14:00, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

This comment suggests a fundamental misunderstanding of copyright. Public domain material doesn't become copyright simply by being faithfully republished. If Friedman had incorporated the leaflets into some kind of artistic collage, some might argue they could claim intellectual property rights on the collage. Abu Sufian bin Qumu

If you are still interested in the topic, you might want to work on Abu Sufian bin Qumu. He was discussed in a number of reliable sources in the spring of 2011. A summary can be found here. He is often discussed in connection with Abdel-Hakim al-Hasidi, but may in fact be more notable.
