Maratha nationalism

Saw the merger discussion up, but there's nothing on the discussion. As the initiator, are you going to getting the discussion started? (I did the same on the UPA site. Lihaas (talk) 20:40, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

I should have. I will. Thanks. Docku:“what up?” 20:41, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Yep, that's my essence, i guess we'll take it to the talk page of the article. Lihaas (talk) 20:47, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

No thanks

I don't like the indent upon indent upon indent. I like using the * . Thanks. Niteshift36 (talk) 20:48, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Sean Hannity=

If you have the stomach for it, I am wondering whether the current edit which includes a section regarding recent allegations of Hannity sponsoring/providing a forum for an anti-Semitic guest warrants a revisiting of the Hal Turner question. The recent accusations are clearly well-sourced, and I would argue that the past accusations provide context and support.Jimintheatl (talk) 23:07, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your response; I agree. I think, given recent developments, that this is a new argument for inclusion. Jimintheatl (talk) 01:13, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Nice to hear from you again ...

I am going well. I had a bit of involvement i the Joe the Plumber article - I didn't like his tax debts being mentioned. It is dragging on though and I think I will leave it to others - the issue is not getting resolved by having raised it at WP:BPLN either.

I am spending much more time these days at Simple.

I appreciate that it is difficult to pick a RS for another country but when in doubt I go to the home page ie http://www.sbs.com.au/ and you might get a hint that it is a national network ;-) Regards --Matilda talk 20:12, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

  • The editorial politics at simple wikipedia is a bit complicated though. Should be for people learning English as a second language and perhaps children (censoring the internet is difficult) but is dominated (in my view) by teenage boys some of whom have been banned from here. It can be a little wearing - makes Joe the Plumber and American politics look refreshing at times. --Matilda talk 20:51, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey try it for DYK! --KnowledgeHegemonyPart2 09:03, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

You have already done so :| --KnowledgeHegemonyPart2 09:27, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi friend! Wish you a HAPPY DEEPAVALI! :-) I just wish to inform you that I have completed the proposed section on "Controversies and criticism of EVR" and added verified content to the article on Periyar E. V. Ramasamy.

However, there is still a large amount of content criticizing Periyar that I was able to gather and yet, have not added to the article. This content is from a book Periyarin Marupakkam by one M. Venkatesan. Despite the fact, that its book reviews have been published by some leading magazines and newspapers, yet I could not consider it entirely reliable as M.Venkatesan is not a noted authority on the subject. While quotes from Venkatesan's book are worthy of consideration, I feel it would be better if we could verify Periyar's works directly for the quotes Venkatesan attributes to him before including them in the section on "Criticism". Anyway, I still consider material from Venkatesan's book as a valuable piece of evidence and that it cannot be discarded. Hence, verification becomes an absolute necessity in this case.

The verified and unverified content could be found at : User:Ravichandar84/Sandbox/Controversies and criticism of EVR.

Thanks -RavichandarMy coffee shop 16:05, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey

I saw your article regarding the "Upper cloth revolt". I was wondering; wouldn't it be better to have it under its Malayalam name? "Upper cloth revolt" sounds a little awkward and contrived :) --vi5in[talk] 23:30, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Well, I used the name from the references. Guess, we will eventually get over that "contrived" feeling. I believe English names are better in English encyclopedia. We can make redirect for the Malayalam name and also include it (in English script) in the introduction of the article. If you are not satisfied, you can start a thread in the article talk page and let us see what others have to say. Thanks. Docku:“what up?” 00:46, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Raj Thackeray

The opinion is drawn from newspaper editorials from major dailies from India. Please retain it to ensure that people are not misled by a modern fascist.

Hi! I just visited the article on Periyar and made a few corrections. I have some content stored in my sandbox about Periyar's comments on Dalits. There is this writer called M. Venkatesan who attributes extremely outrageous remarks on Dalits to Periyar. He reproduces one quote of Periyar wherein he supposedly attributes the rise in price of commodities to Dalit women wearing blouses and other remarks of the kind. M. Venkatesan is an unknown individual and there exists a great amount of doubt about the authenticity of these attributions. But I feel that the allegations are worthy of investigation especially since they are so outrageous and because Venkatesan specifies the exact issue of the magazine or the book in which Periyar makes the remark. Cheers. -RavichandarMy coffee shop 12:41, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I went through the quotes when you brought it up last time. These are extraordinary quotes. I have to say that I also do share your concerns as expressed by you earlier. The other side of Periyar book by Venkatesan sounds a little dubious. We should use references by notable authors who has shown academic interest to depict all sides of periyar. Docku:“what up?” 15:43, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, but I still think it is worthy of investigation. Venkatesan gives the quote along with the books they've been taken from . We could verify the authenticity by checking the books themselves. If at all, Venkatesan is being frank here, we could very well include those quotes in the "Controversies" section.-RavichandarMy coffee shop 02:36, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
I am with you on that. We shouldnt hesitate to add if we can find these texts in other reliable sources. let us go look for thrm. Docku:“what up?” 02:41, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
If we could confirm that Periyar himself made those comments then what is going to prevent someone from adding them to the article-RavichandarMy coffee shop 02:44, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Subjective

At times, not calling a spade a spade works too. --KnowledgeHegemonyPart2 17:27, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

agree. should be evaluated on individual basis. While calling a spade (one which unwittingly happens to appear to be a spade without an agenda) can be counterproductive, the vice versa can be detrimental to shaping wikipedia as a reliable encyclopedia. I know, drawing the line is difficult, but, should we be discouraged from drawing at all? Docku: What up? 17:43, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Re:Bizarre food image

Per Wikipedia:Accessibility#Images, images should be within the section they belong to, not right above the header. If the map image is to be in the lead section then it should be at the top of (or within) the section, not at the bottom of it, because then it overlaps the header of the next section, Episodes. If you feel that the map should go in the Episodes section rather than the lead then it should be placed at within that section under its header, not at the bottom of the section above it. I don't think it should be in Episodes because then it narrows the table. Thanks, Reywas92Talk 17:49, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Rollback

Hello Docku. This is regarding [1] on the India page

  • A Rollback is never an alternative to the Undo function. It is just used to combat vandalism. Jamfad's edit [2] on the page was not vandalism. It was not a bad faith edit but a good faith edit. The User just added It is considered as future superpower besides US and china by 2025. This is not vandalism; only problem is the user didn't comply with our Wikipolicy of citing it or discussing it. Please use the Undo function instead; and explain why did you revert the edit. Thanks, KensplanetTalkContributions 13:31, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

November 2008

I believe that Times of India is not a reliable source for a biography of a living person, when that person is a US resident and government official. If these facts are not reported anywhere in the US press, they are either irrelevant to the person's life, or else dubious. Please do not install that content again [3] at Sonal Shah without first obtaining a consensus to do so at reliable sources noticeboard or other suitable venue. I am now going to remove the content as a BLP enforcement actions and will use blocks or protection if necessary to prevent further additions made without obtaining the necessary consensus first. Thank you. Jehochman Talk 14:03, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

you dont go around warning people blocking them because you think Timesofindia is not reliable source. This is purely an editorial issue, not an issue of vandalism. It is an issue of contradictory opinion based on I, coming from India, grown up reading Timesofindia most of my life and knowing its reputation for its reliability and you suspecting its reliability on the grounds that only US media is reliable for things happen in US. You should rather have brought that issue up in WP:RS/N and informed of that to me. I hope you will be more careful in issuing warning in the future. Thanks. Docku: What up? 17:15, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
I am very concerned about this article because there has been a history of exceptional serious BLP abuse. I have in fact suggested multiple times for the editors seeking to add this content to gain a consensus at RSN. One editor has thankfully taken that advice. It seems like you have have unknowingly been caught in the crossfire. Jehochman Talk 17:27, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Constitution of India

Hi Docku, Just wanted to clarify that not everything listed in the Constitution of India is about India. In other words, the articles of the Constitution are divided between those for the Union and those for the States. Not just in official languages, but in many many areas (such as Finances etc. Part XII, or Elections) laws/rules/limitations are laid down for both the Union and the States. All States function because of those laws/rules/limitations, and make choices under them. However, we don't list the results of those choices on the India page, but rather on the States pages. It is the same with languages. Official States languages are listed in the States pages, such as Bihar. Schedule 8 languages are different; they are officially recognized in India and are not all official languages of States (examples are: Sindhi, Sanskrit, and until recently, Urdu). Schedule 8 languages are languages that are officially recognized for further development and to serve as a pool of languages providing input for the further development of Hindi (Article 351). They are listed in the Constitution; the States have nothing to do with them, and exercise no choice. A constitution amendment (with two-thirds majority in the nation's parliament) is required to change that list. It is those languages that the US State Department has listed on its page, not the Official States languages. Schedule 8 are listed in the India infobox too. Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 15:02, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

I still dont know if listing of official languages of the states in the infobox is a matter of preference or necessity. If it is just a preference, I personally dont really have a strong one either way. Let me just point to you that India is not just all about India as a country but also of its components, states. It could very well have been that Hindi and English are also the official languages of all Indian states, with constitutionally recognised Schedule 8 languages. But,certainly that is not the case. All I can say is that we should just go for what the constitution has to say and its correct interpretation by secondary sources. Not more, not less.
BTW, I guess we should keep all conversation in one place. Docku: What up? 19:44, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Lets discuss in the forum

Language is the issue of concern for Bombay. Monopolizing the article by one sided views in the Article about the city is a matter of concern. There are many different articles about other cities in Wikipedia in which multiple language references are provided. Doctor!!! Enlighten yourself http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmedabad, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delhi, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucknow.

Deleting someones factual contents without discussing is also vandalism. If you monopolize the article like this then you will drive away interest in serious contributions. We will debate for sure. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 221.249.25.218 (talk) 17:12, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
