Another task

There's a task that's been on my talk page for a while to move a few images related to cog railways from the German Wiki to Commons or here as appropriate. I haven't had a chance to look fully into the licensing issues, but I've seen mention in other commons pages of an automated process called (I think) CommonsPusher or something like that. The specific images requested are:

Lensovet, would you consider releasing your images under a free license? "Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5" is not acceptable in commons nor in Wikipedia. Abu, Lensovet's template dual-licenses images under the GFDL (since August 6 of this year) so they are under a free license. You can't make and sell postcards however, unless you print the GFDL in very small print somewhere on the card! --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 10:22, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

California Zephyr

Image:Z-6354.jpg—a very cool vintage picture of the CZ in the Grand Valley—does not yet have a detailed fair use rationale, and a couple of people, including me, have challenged it under FUC#1 (replaceability). Train icons, longest route for each country

I've created a List of Amtrak routes on the Portuguese-language wiki, and for each route I've listed basic information such as length, travel time and average speed, schedule, stops, and comments. In order not to repeat the terms "Mean velocity" and such, which would make the text look dull, I've devised icons for each of those items (I couldn't find any suitable icons already made.) You may look at the page to see how I've used the icons, or you may check the whole category in Commons:Category:Simple icons. If there are any other such very simple icons you want, feel free to provide some ideas.

If you look at the bottom of the page you'll see I've provided a "Top Ten longest routes," and this felt great! I now would like to create lists of train routes for, well, all of the world's countries, and then create a list of the longest route by country. Can anyone offer my some assistance as to where I can find this information?

St Pancras Thameslink

I've just added a picture of KXC to the article - I'm afraid that the only graphics of STP Thameslink that are available are owned by LCR and therefore would not be suitable for submission to Wikipedia. UK rail accidents

Just found this project but seems I've already being working on this. I've recently located and successfully sought permission to use a number of suitable photographs of recent UK rail accidents. These are of the Potters Bar rail cash, the Hatfield rail crash, and the recent Grayrigg crash. I feel such images are of significant value to these articles and am very grateful for the permission. Image still needed for Orlando (Amtrak station)

Despite the fact that Orlando (Amtrak station) has an image attached thanks to me, I have to admit, that I swiped it from a website I believe is being phased out. Volunteer

I live very close to Tweetsie Railroad, a theme park high in the mountains of North Carolina which has two working (in daily use. pulling passenger trains) Baldwin steam locomotives... and I like to take pictures of them because I find them so fascinating. The subject locomotives are:

Baldwin no. 45069 (1917, narrow gauge, 4-6-0) and no 69425 (1943, narrow gauge, 2-8-2)

I am not an expert on railroad locomotives, but if there is any part of these locomotives you would like my to photograph, please let me know.

The comment from the Flickr user is not satisfactory as permission. We need a clear statement from them that they are releasing the image under a free licence which we can use. If you do get such permission it could be worth clarifying the date of the photo as the comment underneath suggests it isn't entirely recent. Adambro (talk) 10:24, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Ouick reminder of a new available infobox.

I've been working quite a bit on a newer version of {{Infobox Locomotive}}. The template is {{Infobox Locomotive Auto}}. One of it's "Auto" features is that it adds the page to the articles needing images automatically if no image is supplied. Once someone adds an image to the infobox by using | image= the article is automatically removed from the needed image list. Just another idea I had to make things easier.

British steam

I have been contributing to articles on this subject over the past year. We have a huge problem obtaining uploadable images of locomotives as running upwards of 45 years ago due to the stranglehold of the extremely stringent WP copyright rules. I stumbled upon this tag (or whatever you call it) today and it seems like a good way of presenting fair use rationale. From what I understand,permission has been negotiated with the Smithsonian Institution. If this is the case, perhaps some similar arrangement could be made with the British National Rail Museum archives at York. Something drastic needs to be done as many articles are becoming extremely uninspiring due to lack of images.

Urgent- Yet more images needed

I'm trying to dedicate myself to photographing newly re-liveried trains in the UK. I have a couple of problems a) I am limited to a specific area (usually) this is The York- Edinburgh area. b) wikimedia commons isn't letting me upload my images for some reason- it is saying The file has no extension (Like ".jpg"). However, .jpg is on my image- help So basically, I am appealing for help to photograph newly re-liveried trains south of York- For instance East Midlands Trains, London Midland e.t.c . I would also appreciate some help with photographing trains north of York as the time I can spend trainspotting is limited. However today, I have taken 150 photos approx. with my Olympus camera. Just a few comments. Firstly make sure that when you select a image to upload to Commons you change the default "Destination filename" to something descriptive as opposed to the default name your camera uses. You can see how I name uploaded images by looking at the category of my images. If you look there you'll also find that I've managed to get some photos of some of the recent new liveries and will continue to try to add to this as more trains are re-livered and I manage to get them in front of my camera lens. Also make sure you provide a reasonable description for any images and add it to appropriate categories so it can be properly organised. Adambro (talk) 20:42, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't think it's really an issue of laziness. Having never been to the British Isles myself, I don't know as much about the systems there like I do about those in the US, so short of looking at the articles that are now getting sorted into Category:UK rail transport articles needing images, I wouldn't know what needs better images or whether any particular articles necessarily pertain to the area you visited. I hope you had fun and were able to get some good photos even if you stick to a decision not to upload any of them; and ultimately It's your choice whether you want to release and upload your own images. A few days ago I started searching the english WP for uploaded images (photos and other) related to railways in Greece (OSE, ISAP and others). When I locate one I tag it for TrainsWikiProject and also I add "Category:Rail transport in Greece". I also add "Category:Rail transport in Greece" to related images in Wikimedia Commons. Preliminary Announcement: Wolfe's WikiWeek

Instead of a regular holiday this year, it's my plan to buy a 7-day All Line Rover ticket and travel around Great Britain by train. Why am I telling you this? Well, I'll be taking a digital camera with me and I intend to take as many photographs as possible that can be used on Wikipedia (mostly railway-related). I'm going to try and get what I can from Category:UK rail transport articles needing images, and I'm also inviting requests and suggestions.

Northern New Jersey Rail Map

Hi,

I printed the Wikipedia rail lines map for the River Line and Northern Branch in northern NJ and expanded it by hand so as to explain some things to a friend. I thought that it could perhaps be useful for some Wiki articles also, if further developed and cleaned up; again, it's mostly handwritten right now. I also used yellow lines to id NJ Transit rail routes, orange for PATH, and blue for the Bergen-Hudson light rail line. Added some major industries also. Tried to indicate where the lines are now removed. Also tried to identify former RR operators (Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, New York Central, Jersey Central, Erie, Lackawanna, Erie Lackawanna, etc.). I also added some former interlocking tower locations. I'd welcome any suggestions, additions, corrections, further details to add. Should probably be expanded to the north for a few miles, as to make the NYS&W clearer, show the River Line through Bogota, indicate trackage in Paterson NJ.

Using "px" in images is still right

I don't care what the standards are supposed to be. Anytime I add or fix images, I'm still going to add "px" at the end of the number for the image size no matter what. I've just recently discoverd that the main image for the infobox on the Market–Frankford Line somehow became gigantic with the previous edit. When I tried to bring it to an acceptable size without using the "px" marks, it didn't work. It only worked when I used them. ----DanTD (talk) 02:58, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Project team should be aware that this image is currently at IFD here. Three new image categories

Inspired by the category for images of Metra stations, and my own effort to do the same for Long Island Rail Road stations, I created three new categories tonight;

• Category:Images of Metro-North railroad stations
• Category:Images of New Jersey Transit railroad stations
• Category:Images of SEPTA Railroad stations

"Railfan Jack" using pages as a personal gallery

It would seem that some user by the name of "Railfan Jack" is using numerous to display his photos as if this were his gallery - see the SD70 page for an example. While pictures in general are a good thing, many of these shots do not aid the articles, many are poor quality (dark, objects obscuring the item in question, blurred, overexposed, etc.) and the the notes are often badly written and non-relevant ("CN SD70M-2 #8018 sets idle waits for track crew to clear the line.").

Could better, more illustrative images be added and found, better captions given and possibly a warning sent (given that it seems he's been causing trouble for a while)

Do our images help/hurt rail travel?

I've asked this question about images for random station articles before, but I often wonder if increases and decreases in rail traffic at various railroad stations can be linked to our images of the stations in those articles. For a while I thought that earlier versions of Fredericksburg (VRE station) had negative traffic numbers due to the images of the cracked railroad bridge embankments. Meanwhile DeLand (Amtrak station) traffic increased after I and another user posted images of that station. ----DanTD (talk) 03:12, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Images of Maturelife1 are threatened with deletion

The images of User:Maturelife1 are currently threatened with deletion, over presumed copyright violations. Many are of BART stations, MARTA stations and three Metro-North stations in Mount Vernon, New York. Budd RDCs in revenue service this morning 22 Aug '11

From what I have read, the Budds are back up units. Since I wasn't expecting to see them the images are only 1.3MP. I'd be happy to add them to the collection here if they are wanted (and if someone will tell me what I need to do).

• Absolutely we'd like to have those shots. What would be best is if you could upload them to Wikimedia Commons under a suitably free license, allowing us to use those images here and on other projects. Mackensen (talk) 08:04, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Passenger rail guide permissions

This is just a heads-up that I contacted Hikki Nagasaki and obtained a clarification that all the images he takes for the USA Passenger Rail Guide are released into the public domain. I know we've always thought this was the case but the wording was admittedly vague and a couple administrators wondered about derivative works. I forwarded his email to m:OTRS we can slap on any images from his site (that he took, of course). See File:Devilslake Train Station.jpg for an example. Dallas Area Rapid Transit Stations

I've been recently going through the photo's requested for Dallas and discovered a very large amount of DART stations tagged with photo requests. I've gone through an resolved several of them, however there are several going on the Orange Line that are deferred or have been cancelled. As the stations are only "planned" I'd appreciate it if the task force could reconsider the following articles to see if a photo request is still reasonable.

DFW North (DART station)

I just created a new St. Louis MetroLink stations commons category, and I split that one between Missouri and Illinois. Sadly, the sub-category for Illinois stations is lacking of images, but that doesn't mean the ones in the big city shouldn't be added. Distance sign categories

Is there a commons category for those old mileage/kilometer signs that they used to add to stations in the late-19th and early-20th Centuries? If not should there be one? Sorting needed: 1910s American East Coast rail facilities images

The collection contains detailed architectural documentation about various rail facilities of the Delaware, Lackwanna, and Western Railroad and also photographs of such facilities, all from circa 1910-1920.
