I Need Help With Install

Guys, I just switched to a custom MACbook with some sweet features from my amd64 pc. I'm not quite too sure how to install TW. Could somebody help me? Please post on my talk page, I really like wiki. --InvisibleDiplomat666 23:46, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Differing difs problem

Why is it that sometimes difs look like this, good and sometimes like this, bad? I'd like them to look "good" all the time.

Might it have something to do with popups being enabled? --Ron Ritzman (talk) 00:22, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Well, the second looks bad because it is vandalism. Duh!  :)
More seriously, you are referring to the lack of "rollback" links in the second, right? It's because there is a "newer edit". The rollback links only appear on the most recent edit on any page. — the Sidhekin (talk) 00:45, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Ok, so if you got there from recent changes then it means that somebody beat you to it. Nice to know. --Ron Ritzman (talk) 00:49, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Tfd notice

Twinkles adds Tfd notices to template by including them into noinclude tags. That way there is never a notice to the users of the template about the Tfd in question. Agathoclea (talk) 12:40, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Can someone help me with my Twinkle

I apologize if this is the incorrect forum for TW help, but I could not think of a more appropiate place. Let me began by stating that "not technically minded" is an understatement for my case. I installed TW, but I was unable to modify it so that it doesn't automatically watchlist every article where I revert vandalism, it doesn't automatically wathchlist every talkpage where I issue a vandalism warning, and it doesn't mark every vandalism revert as a minor edit. When I blanked my "monobook" and TW still worked, I realized that this whole shibang is beyond my comprehension. I would much appreciate some help. You can either tell me what to do or play around with my monobook yourself. Thank you very much.--brewcrewer (yada, yada) 05:32, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

I assume you are using twinkle via gadgets? in such case, you can't modify the settings. If not, then remember to purge cache. AzaToth 09:42, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
You mean it is possible to use Twinkle even if the Twinkle box in gadgets is unchecked?--brewcrewer (yada, yada) 15:01, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Sockpuppets

In making reports to log an SSP report, Twinkle doesn't appear to "finish" the job. See 1, 2 and 3. This appears to be a recent problem and occurs on both my Mac and PC. TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 15:32, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Twinkle not working

Twinkle seems to have stopped working altogether for me. Previously it was working well with my usual browser, Opera 9.27, running under Windows XP. Am I correct in thinking the Twinkle box in the Gadgets tab of my Preferences should be unchecked if I installed Twinkle through monobook.js? Salmanazar (talk) 11:37, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

I would like to second this - Twinkle has stopped working for me in the past couple of days. I also use Opera browser. Lankiveil (speak to me) 04:02, 21 June 2008 (UTC).
Please tell me if you get any error messages, to know that it just stop working isn't that helpful for me. AzaToth 11:18, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
In my case no, no error messages whatsoever. It's just 'gone'. Lankiveil (speak to me) 02:26, 22 June 2008 (UTC).
Never mind, just mysteriously reappeared without any warning. If you did something, thanks! =). Lankiveil (speak to me) 04:30, 22 June 2008 (UTC).
It's started partially working for me... i.e., just on "Difference between revisions" pages. I have never had any error messages at all. Salmanazar (talk) 11:39, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Not working from monobook in FF 3.0

Twinkle stopped working for some reason, enabling it as a gadget works. It may be an addon that has stopped it. --Doug Weller (talk) 10:05, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

working OK for me as well, but it's mangling AfD2s horridly. See here for one. TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 04:15, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
That was because you have forgot to close an link, not a fault in Twinkle, but an user error. AzaToth 11:16, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
whoops! Sorry 'bout that. Can you see my thread above re: reporting socks? That one doesn't appear to be user error. Thanks! TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 14:02, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
looking onto it AzaToth 14:08, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Yea, I fixed that error some days ago, was an error with HTMLFormElement.getTexts(). AzaToth 14:13, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks! I'll let you know if I have any other problems. Thanks so much for a great "toy" :) TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 14:16, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Seems ok again for me. Doug Weller (talk) 14:51, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Twinkle not installing?

Hi. I've just tried to install Twinkle but it doesn't seem to be working. I've tried checking the gadget box in my preferences, using the monobook.js method, and both of these together but none of the editing or reporting tabs appear. This is probably a dumb question but I'm using IE7 - would this be the reason? Bettia (rawr CRUSH!) 14:03, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, it is, get a Mozilla-based browser (may I reccoment Firefox?)...... Dendodge .. TalkContribs 17:01, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
So it uses non-standard Javascript? :( andy (talk) 17:30, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
Incidentally, it doesn't work on an iPhone... andy (talk) 17:30, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
Accually, it tries to only use standard JavaScript, and that's a main reason it wont work in IE. AzaToth 17:31, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
Still won't work on an iPhone... andy (talk) 17:32, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
I don't know what engine iphone uses, could you give me the error messages recieved? AzaToth 17:34, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
Just doesn't do nothing. (The browser is Safari). I was being facetious. andy (talk) 17:36, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Aye, thought so. My bloody rubbish office IT department wont let me use Firefox (perhaps they think I won't use it for work purposes - whatever would give them that idea?), so it looks likes I'm gonna have to remain Twinkle-less for the time being. Bettia (rawr CRUSH!) 13:15, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

You could try Portable Firefox. --Closedmouth (talk) 13:36, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Restore this version

My restore function hasn't been working for a few weeks. It's starts the process but finishes with an error message: Reverting page: couldn't grab element "editform", aborting, this could indicate failed respons from the server. I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.14 with Windows XP on my desktop and the same Firefox with Vista on my laptop. I have Twinkle installed via monobook. Has anything changed? Florrieleave a note 16:59, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

It's probably because you have Norton Internet-blah installed. AzaToth 17:33, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
No, I don't. Any other suggestions? Florrieleave a note 06:02, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

XfD Process

There is a discussion here about changing the way some XfDs are done, specifically changing them to translude discussions like AfDs. This would change the way Twinkle should work, so I figured I would give you a heads up. Thanks, MrKIA11 (talk) 15:25, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Twinkle on other Wikis?

I have two questions here. First, am I allowed to use Twinkle on other wikis? Second, how would I do this? The wiki I have in mind is a Wikia wiki, in case that makes a difference. Player 03 (talk) 17:09, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Yes, you can copy the code to Wikia, as long as you credit the original author (AzaToth), and the wiki needs to have JavaScript enabled in order to run. doña macy [talk] 20:13, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Yup, Twinkle is one of the best tools around. – ukexpat (talk) 21:37, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Sure is. But I was a drooling, jibbering idiot before I started using it, and it didn't help that one bit. ;-) --Fabrictramp | talk to me 23:45, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Twinkle...

Well, i got Rollback rights today, and i thought of installing twinkle. So, i put the script, the one that says User:AzaToth, on my Monobook, i created that yesterday. Then i refreshed it once..it came out in 4 tabs. Then i saw a page that was vandalised. But, i got to that page without using Twinkle, for soem reason, it hasnt been working.. It keeps saying that Im too new for Twinkle, something like that. So, how many edits do yo uneed to use Twinkle, and besides the screenshot thats on the Twinkle page, i think im gonna need another one, to explain more about Twinkle. Thanks.II MusLiM HyBRiD II —Preceding comment was added at 13:34, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Please dont take this the wrong way, but if you're too new to understand the instructions, you shouldn't be using Twinkle at all. I'm aware that you've recently had your rollback removed for misuse; Twinkle is far more powerful than rollback. – iridescent 16:37, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Twinkle Preferences

It appears that twinkle adds every page I revert to my watchlist, is there a way to stop it from doing this? Thanks Washburnmav (talk) 19:02, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

see Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Twinkle/doc#Configuration, the correct lines to add to your monobook.js would be:
TwinkleConfig = {
       watchRevertedPages              : [ ],
};
if you didnt' want to watch any page you reverted. –xenocidic (talk) 19:50, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Twinkle is sometimes harmful, and appears to be getting used indiscriminately

Twice in just the past couple days I've noticed people leaving inappropriate warning templates. When I asked them about it, they just say "twinkle does this" as though this makes it OK. Is this really something the user can't control? Who is being encouraged to use twinkle? It sounds like it's being used as an excuse to not pay attention, which surely isn't what was intended. Is there some way to remove this tool from people who misuse it? It's adding csd warning templates to people who already have the exact same warning. Is it really somehow better to use this tool than to just slap a quick {{DB|reason}} on the page? Friday (talk) 18:06, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

There is a way to disable it on people, off-hand I can't recall how though. That being said, people are responsible for their twinkle use. However, if people already have the CSD warning, perhaps the author has been inappropriately removing the CSD tags? –xeno (talk) 18:11, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
It used to be by blanking their monobook. AFAIK it can't be removed now it's in gadgets, and every time anyone removes it from gadgets someone wheelwars to put it back. – iridescent 18:13, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
(double edit conflict)Ultimately, the user is responsible for the use of the tool. Yes, Twinkle can sometimes add a warning that isn't totally appropriate, but there's an easy fix -- the user deletes the warning with an appropriate edit summary. This happened to me on a prod yesterday, and it took all of 2 seconds to fix, so there's not a lot of excuse not to do so.
That said, sometimes it is appropriate to leave an apparently duplicate csd warning. If a user has been warned, the page is deleted and the user recreates it, then another warning is (IMO) entirely appropriate. --Fabrictramp | talk to me 18:14, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Friday, I looked at both those cases that seemed to have brought you here... I mean the first one, the templated user is inappropriately creating dozens of test pages, the second one the twinkle user didn't check the page history to see if it had already survived speedy - that one is the twinkler's fault. –xeno (talk) 18:23, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
No reasonable editor would think that it's a good idea to add 6 more duplicate templates, after the first one didn't get the message across. A reasonable editor would leave a plain English explanation of the problem, not lots of duplicate messages. Our goal should be actual communication with newbies, to help them understand what we do here. Twinkle appears to be making it easier for people to be unreasonable editors. I realize, this isn't Twinkle's fault, exactly, but it's part of the problem. Friday (talk) 18:26, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Friday, Twinkle is the least of our problems when it comes to this issue... At least with Twinkle they get to see the talkpage they're leaving the message on! – iridescent 18:29, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
The reasonable editor can self-revert the warning template in the rare case when that's appropriate. If an editor is not reasonable, the absence of Twinkle won't change that. If the editor is reasonable but ignorant of policy, politly and gently educating them may be the more helpful solution. --Clubjuggle T/C 18:31, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
  • The editor in the first case is known for being a little bitey towards newbies (see his RFA). Again, a don't-blame-the-tool(twinkle) case. –xeno (talk) 18:35, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
The second editor was not thinking and was in too much of a hurray, so forgot to check history, sorry. I did look on the talk page for any information, but there wasn't any and at the time the page did have very little content on. - tholly --Turnip-- 18:46, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Personally, I think this and other automated tools are are more likely to promote careless editing than good. . DGG (talk) 23:26, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
I've encountered at least one editor who claimed to be unaware of who he had messaged because he was using Twinkle. DuncanHill (talk) 08:56, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
Wikipedia is sometimes harmful, because it provides people incorrect (vandalized) information for their school projects. We don't shut that down either. --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 11:03, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Mass vandalism

I've just encountered an example of this harmful Twinkle editing, namely this editor using Twinkle to mass-vandalise pages. Take note of the time intervals between edits too. StaticGull  Talk  14:09, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately, these folks are running the code remotely via Greasemonkey. Not sure why the edit throttle is not kicking in. Doesn't exist maybe? –xeno (talk) 14:26, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Proposed :-). It's already implemented for rollback, so it's probably technically possible. StaticGull  Talk  15:29, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

adding pages to your watchlist

I'd rather not have a simple revert cause an article to be added to my watchlist. So I'd like to change the setting to []. Will this unwatch any pages that are currently on my watchlist when I revert them? Dismas|(talk) 21:07, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

I just tested it and the page remains on your watchlist. –xeno (talk) 21:10, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! Dismas|(talk) 21:26, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Blank pages when reverting

I just started using Twinkle today and I think I've read through everything but can't find anything about this... When I revert a page (AGF or VANDAL) and the article page reloads, the page will be blank. Not like the article has been blanked but the browser window will be blank (white). No logo, navigation boxes on the left, no user info in the top right... nothing. If I click on the empty space, the background with the book and its pages will come back and there will be a scroll bar but nothing else. When I mouse-over where a link should be, like for my watchlist, I'll get the hover text but that's it. If I hit reload on the browser tool bar, the page will reload and display fine. If I don't reload but click on one of the invisible links, such as my watchlist, whatever page I go to will be blank. So whichever way I go, I eventually have to hit reload for anything to display properly. I'm running Safari on a MacBook. Everything is up to date. Any ideas? Dismas|(talk) 03:13, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Much the same problem with Safari on WinXP, which is one of the reasons I hardly ever use Twinkle. DuncanHill (talk) 08:54, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
Use Firefox, it's fine in that. - tholly --Turnip-- 16:00, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes this is a problem with Safari. On OSX, hitting "Reload", cmd-R or cmd-L+enter fixes the blank, but I have no idea where it is coming from. I'm guessing the background HTTP session is breaking the cache of the page, but i can't verify. --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 19:36, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
I guess I'll just deal with it since I don't like using Firefox. Thanks for the suggestions/help, Dismas|(talk) 20:24, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you to whomever fixed this in the last couple days!! Dismas|(talk) 00:15, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Nomination for speedy deletion as a minor edit

Wikipedia:WikiProject_User_scripts/Scripts/Twinkle/doc#markSpeedyPagesAsMinor has the nomination of articles for speedy deletions as a minor edit by default. Such an action isn't minor, and shouldn't be regarded as minor by default. Andjam (talk) 08:50, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Absolutely, noms for deletion are never minor, and it is disruptive to mark them as such. DuncanHill (talk) 08:53, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
The problem isn't just that the default is wrong. There are no circumstances under which the placing of a speedy deletion tag could be considered a minor edit, so the option should be completely removed from Twinkle. Phil Bridger (talk) 07:47, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
While I agree that the default shouldn't be to mark CSDs as minor, I believe the option should remain to mark them as minor, simply because users should be given the option of marking them as minor or not. Marking their edit as minor should be at the discretion of the editor, just as it is at the bottom of any user's Wikipedia edit page. Just because we don't agree with another user's assessment of their edit's severity doesn't make it wrong. — OranL (talk) 17:47, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Can you provide an example of any circumstance where it would be appropriate for a speedy deletion nomination to be a minor edit? Phil Bridger (talk) 19:38, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
{{db-u1}} is one example. I agree that it should be marked as a non-minor edit by default. –xeno (talk) 19:55, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Twinkle doesn't request an url imput for db-i9

When using {{Db-i9}} (image copyvio), Twinkle doesn't ask me to input an url, like it used to. I think it might be due to this edit. The variable must now be passed explicitly, perhaps this is the cause. Jackaranga (talk) 20:49, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Have added it now. AzaToth 11:40, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
I think I'm experiencing the opposite effect; it worked about 48 hours ago but it doesn't work anymore. Gary King (talk) 19:58, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
I made an rewamp of the optional parameter interface in csd, so perhaps a bug slipped in, I though I tested them all though. AzaToth 20:06, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
I just tested it, and I can verify that it doesn't ask for the URL anymore. Also, can you fix the watchlist problem? Gary King (talk) 20:11, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
Just tested I9, and it works for me. please remember to purge cache. AzaToth 20:35, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
I purged it several times. I'm using the monobook version and not the gadget, FYI. It was after I purged it that the URL field stopped appearing. Gary King (talk) 20:36, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

CSD on an image removes it from watchlist?

When I CSD an image, it is removed from my watchlist. Is this a known bug? Gary King (talk) 04:04, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Double-signed talk page notice

When I used the "CSD T3" option for tagging a template for speedy deletion, the script notified the user, but double-signed the notification. I have a custom signature defined in my Wikipedia preferences: "— [[User:OranL|OranL]] ([[User talk:OranL|talk]])" (without the quotes). Would this be causing problems in twinkle? — OranL (talk) 23:17, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

On second thought, I may have typed "~~~~" into the explanation page, which would have caused this to happen... — OranL (talk) 00:50, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

AfD notification goes to wrong editor if article was created as a redirect

Appears that an editor used TW to notify me that Criticism of Google is up for deletion. However, I did not actually create the article text; I created a redirect. Later, the article then got split from main article and the rest is voluminous history.

Could Twinkle be made smarter in this regard - not just pick the first revision editor, but rather pick the first editor who contributed a revision that isn't a redirect, perhaps? Or is that beyond whatever is considered feasible in MediaWiki JavaScript land? --wwwwolf (barks/growls) 22:03, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Dosen't work,

It appears that Twinkle does not show up in MediaWiki 1.13; Also, the only skins Twinkle works in is MonoBook (my monobook skin is permanently changed into a foreign language skin) and Simple. --frogger3140 (talk) 15:05, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

CSD automatically deletes?

Okay, so I just tried to tag an article for G11, figuring I'd have another admin investigate it for a second opinion. Instead, it just automaitcally deleted the article, without confirming anything with me. Is that supposed to happen, or what? Tony Fox (arf!) 05:39, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Yes, that's supposed to happen. There's a little tick box that you mark if you only want to tag, and not delete. SchuminWeb (Talk) 14:49, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
The tick box should probably have some bold lettering or something so it draws attention. I don't recall that being there before... Tony Fox (arf!) 23:49, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Good software practice says that the safer option (tagging without deleting) should be the default, and the checkbox should have to be marked if you don't want to delete. I asked for this change a while back, but got no response.--Fabrictramp | talk to me 14:35, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
It's all about huffman coding, the most common operator should have the least number of clicks to perform. AzaToth 17:55, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Agreed. If I'm using TW with speedies, nine times out of ten, I'm going in with the intention of verifying speedy nominees and zapping them, and thus that should remain the default. SchuminWeb (Talk) 18:40, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I don't usually use TW to delete an article someone else nom'd for speedy, so 99 times out of 100, I'm using TW to tag, not delete. (I'm a strong believer that another pair of eyes on speedies is a good thing. *grin*) I still think it would be much safer to let the user set a preference for which is the default.--Fabrictramp | talk to me 18:44, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Agreed about multiple eyes on speedies. I usually don't tag more than I go in and look at those things already tagged, thus being that "second pair" myself. Still, I'll bet a preference for tag-only as default wouldn't be too hard to implement. But just so long as the default for admins if the option is not set either way is delete-on-contact, and the other is the opt-out. SchuminWeb (Talk) 02:19, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
As long as there is the possibility of setting a preference, then someone should only accidentally delete once, after which they know it's their own fault for not setting the pref. Works for me. :) --Fabrictramp | talk to me 14:17, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

TW doesn't leave messages on talk pages

Hi everybody, as usual when I revert vandalism the vandal's talk page opens for me to warn. Somehow after clicking 'submit', the warning doesn't appear! The warn box just shows 'data loaded' instead of the usual 'adding uw-2 for shared user' (or something like that) in green. I'm using Opera 9.27. Can somebody render some help? Or should I report this as a bug?  S3000  ☎ 09:59, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Updated Opera to the latest version (9.51), tried on Firefox 3.0.1, tried meddling with my monobook.js script, no difference. However I just tested it recently and it worked (for a spam warning). Retried several times after that but doesn't seem to work. Help please.  S3000  ☎ 10:38, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Same problem here. --Old Moonraker (talk) 15:11, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Working again: thanks to whomever. --Old Moonraker (talk) 16:43, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Update: Retried and it worked, but precisely just 4 times. Since then it has been the same. Help!  S3000  ☎ 18:24, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm experiencing the same problem. It's worked fine prior to today, but now all attempts to leave warnings are unsuccessful. The "Warn/Notify user" box says "User talk page modification: data loaded..." and nothing further happens, remaining that way until I close the box. The situation is the same whether I attempt it from the page which automatically opens when I revert, or if I manually go to the user's talk page. I use Firefox 2.0.0.16.  MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM  21:55, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm having the exact same problem. It just started today. I'm using Firefox 3.01 on a Mac. --Loonymonkey (talk) 22:52, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
The fix (above) was only temporary—still broken. Firefox 3.01 Mac. --Old Moonraker (talk) 05:31, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
I experienced the same problem. Looks like this edit caused it. I closed the <br>s again, and (at least for me, FF 2.0.0.16) TW leaves messages again. --Oxymoron83 07:17, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
If changing from correct HTML wikimarkup <br> to non wiki XHTML <br /> fixed the problem then we have a much more serious problem. This needs to be seriously investigated.
--David Göthberg (talk) 07:57, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Mine seems a little better today. It leaves warnings flawlessly most of the time, but not everytime, as it should. Since I'm not alone here, it may be a serious issue.  S3000  ☎ 09:14, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm noticing now that the problems usually occur when using the vandalism or rollback functions (which then open the user's talk). I can leave a warning if I haven't reverted the user, but if I do revert and then try to leave a warning it hangs on the "data loaded..." as described above. This means I can leave warnings for the Twinkle Sandbox user below, but not for actual vandals in most instances. --Loonymonkey (talk) 16:38, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Today it's much better. It behaves normally when leaving a first warning for the month, i.e. it shows "adding uw-2 for shared user" (or something like that) in green. However when there's already an existing warning for the month, only "User talk page modification: data loaded..." appears, but to my surprise, it leaves the intended warning flawlessly. Looks like the issue is more-less solved. Is it the same for everyone else here?  S3000  ☎ 10:27, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

I don't think this will help at all, but with bugs you never know so: Since Oxymoron83 thinks that my change to MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext might have caused it I have reverted that box to the version prior to this Twinkle problem. Let's try that version for some day. Then go "forward" to my version of that box and try that for some day. I hope you guys will keep reporting here how well/bad it works for you.
You should be aware that Wikipedia has had some server problems lately that has affected page saves. So that might be what you guys experience. Anyway, let's try Oxymoron83's theory.
--David Göthberg (talk) 10:59, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
It seems to be working fine for me now. I'll report here if the problem resurfaces. Thanks. --Loonymonkey (talk) 18:34, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
The reason why I think the changes to the Anontalkpagetext caused this is, that the Firefox error console complained about the missing </br>s ('expected </br>, found </p>', resp. 'expected </br>, found </tr></table>' after the first <br> was closed) whenever I tried to leave a warning on one of the affected (see below) pages and linked to the </p> at the Anontalkpagetext in source code. This always together with a second error message: (AFAIR) 'wpTextbox1 has no properties', what linked to 'var text = form.wpTextbox1.value;' in twinklewarn.js (which uses XHTML, which requires all tags to be closed). Directly after the tags were closed, I was able to leave [4] where I wasn't before for an hour, and no errors occurred.
For better tracking of the problem it should be noted that changes to MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext can only affect the leaving of warnings to talk pages that contain this message; this excludes talk pages of registered users and probably IP talk pages that already received warnings (in edit mode only?). --Oxymoron83 13:50, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Oxymoron83: If what you state is correct (and I have no reason to doubt you), that could mean that MediaWiki is parsing MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext in the wrong way when it inserts it onto an IP talk page. Since in HTML wikimarkup we are supposed to use <br>, not <br />. MediaWiki then parses the wikimarkup and translates it to whatever is the current standard for web pages, and today (2008) that is XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Support for parsing XHTML tags like <br /> was only added recently to MediaWiki to make it simpler to copy and paste text from other freely licensed sources.
I don't know anything about how Twinkle works and I don't know much about javascript either. But another wild guess based on what you said above is that Twinkle tries to parse the page content (the text+wikimarkup) before it inserts it onto the page. Your description indicates that Twinkle sees the raw code for MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext already before it gets inserted onto the page.
Whatever is the actual bug, I agree with you that it seems the MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext at the moment needs to have XHTML code instead of HTML wikimarkup. But apparently any non-HTML wikimarkup parts, such as the wikitable, does not provoke the bug. I guess Twinkle simply thinks that is raw text.
I will report this discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) since I think the devs need to look into this.
--David Göthberg (talk) 22:54, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the explanation. I've reverted back to your version, and both <br>s aren't closed if I view the source code of a talk page that transcludes this message, what looks like a parsing error then. However, I wasn't able to reproduce this in my userspace (the <br>s are closed there). So, yes, this should go to VPT, as it's not directly related to TW. --Oxymoron83 08:13, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
The follow three messages copied from David's talk page:

Hi David, thank you very much for your explanation! Since you're active now and I should be sleeping already (nightshift), I've reverted back to your revision of MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext, and I think we've identified the problem now. If you view the source code of a random IP talk page that contains this MediaWiki message (e. g. [5]), you see that both <br>s of that message aren't closed. If I understand your explanation right, this is indeed a parsing error then. Regards --Oxymoron83 07:46, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Ouch! You are very right. I have now checked both an empty anon IP page, an empty anon page in edit mode, and one with messages on. As you know the MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext is shown in all those cases. And in all those cases the <br> tags were unparsed (not converted to XHTML <br /> tags). So yes, it must be a MediaWiki parsing error. I will report that to the devs.

Right, I have now edited MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext so it has XHTML <br /> tags. So Twinkle should work fine again. We have now tested enough. I have written a bug report over at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#MediaWiki not parsing HTML tags in MediaWiki messages. Sorry everyone for causing all this trouble when I updated MediaWiki:Anontalkpagetext.

Thanks for the fix guys!  S3000  ☎ 10:38, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

  • Out of curiosity: wasn't this Twinkle's fault in the first place? Are you fixing MW message only because the script author is not available at the moment? —AlexSm 14:15, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
I think both MediaWiki and Twinkle is to blame. MediaWiki should parse HTML wikimarkup the same in MediaWiki messages as it does in articles. That is see to that the output becomes valid "XHTML 1.0 Transitional". And Twinkle should not choke just because there is a HTML tag in the page. I wonder why Twinkle even tries to parse the XHTML in the rendered pages? Shouldn't Twinkle work with the page content, not the rendered page?

A place to test user warning messages and notices

I've set up an account to be used by any user for testing of warning messages and notices. A normal sandbox in article space cannot be used for this purpose, because Twinkle obviously cannot issue a user warning from such a page. Please feel free to use User talk:Sandbox for user warnings for any testing of user warnings and notices. This account is exclusively for this purpose, so do not hesitate to leave as many warnings as you'd like. Sandbox for user warnings (talk) 04:39, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

"Rollback" links in contribs

Is there a way to turn off the "[rollback]" and "[vandalism]" links on contribs page(s)? I don't use them anymore and they're just annoying me now. --Closedmouth (talk) 14:20, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

I've set up my alternate account to do what you want. The simplest way to implement it for yourself is to replace the line importScript('User:AzaToth/twinkle.js'); in your monobook.js with importScript('User:Xaradnam/twinkle.js');
Or, copy the contents of User:Xaradnam/twinklefluff.js into your own twinklefluff.js. This code is exactly the same as AzaToth's version but with one "if" statement modified to make it "false" so the relevant section of code will be skipped. Then replace the line importScript('User:AzaToth/twinkle.js'); in your monobook.js with the code which is in User:Xaradnam/monobook.js. (Admins wishing to do this should uncomment the lines which are commented out.) In the second line replace Xaradnam with your user name.
Remember to refresh your browser and bypass your cache the first time. I hope this helps.  MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM  00:51, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
That sounds good, thanks for your help. Out of curiosity, what happens when Az updates his version of twinklefluff? Do you have to copy his changed into your version or what? --Closedmouth (talk) 10:31, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I'll have to update it when AzaToth updates (I've got it watchlisted), but that's easy enough since I just have to add 9 bytes. Of course, maybe the next official version will include this very option. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 22:04, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
Makes sense. Thanks again! --Closedmouth (talk) 04:45, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Different "Versions" of twinkle rollback

The three options to rollback (standard, vandal and Assume Good Faith) all perform their tasks in slightly different ways. Can anyone direct me to information in what exactly is the difference between the three ways of rolling back. --Brideshead(leave a message) 14:31, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

For the AGF and standard rollbacks, the only difference is the prefix on your provided summary. AGF says it's good-faith, while standard makes no faith assumption. Both pop a confirmation box if it's more than one edit. The vandalism one is more automated. It provides no confirmation on rolling back multiple edits at once, and gives no opportunity to add your own summary. Hope that helps. SchuminWeb (Talk) 18:27, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your help, that's great. --Brideshead(leave a message) 18:36, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Bug? Feature? My mistake?

A moment or two ago I went to flag The Cheetah Girls 4 for AfD using Twinkle. I had never done this before. A box pops up, I type the reason, and the window whirs and clicks, telling me everything it is doing. When it's done, however, the only thing that seemed to happen is the talk page notification on the creator's page. No AfD flag, no entry in the log, no discussion page (I added them manually). Isn't twinkle supposed to do that? Why didn't it? It's not something I want to test except on real targets, so I can't tell if its repeating behavior. gnfnrf (talk) 04:40, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

I should mention that I'm running Firefox 3.0 under Vista, with Windows Firewall, should that be significant. Other features, such as CSD and PRODs, add tags and notifications normally. gnfnrf (talk) 04:43, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
And the next one worked normally. Maybe just cosmic rays. gnfnrf (talk) 11:34, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Using Twinkle

I believe only autoconfirmed users can use Twinkle, is that right? Shouldn't this be included in the project page? A new user will have some trouble finding out why it's not working for him. Deletion summary for WP:CSD#I9

The deletion summary for CSD#I9 could use some work. It currently reads "Speedy deleted per (CSD I9), was an image that was a suspected copyright infringement, and the uploader didn't assert public domain, fair use, or a free license". The actual wording of I9 is "Images that are claimed by the uploader to be images with free licenses when this is obviously not the case". So when the uploader does claim public domain or another free license, and this clearly isn't the case, the image meets I9. - auburnpilot talk 21:28, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Proposal: Applying to Use Twinkle

I think that the time has come for people to apply to Wikipedia to use Twinkle. This software is simply too powerful for vandals to use. the Grawp socks have been using this to great effect. It's time we only allow responsible people to use this. Arbiteroftruth (talk) 22:30, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Not necessary, since we can block vandals for their actions with TW just as we can for other vandalism. Additionally, TW is an option in the Preferences menu, and that would require removing it from there, which is a quick and easy way for users to add TW without having to mess with their monobook.js page. I would also oppose it, because it would slow down the speed of TW if it has to go to a check page to make sure you're on the approved list. SchuminWeb (Talk) 00:27, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Slowing down Twinkle would be a benefit, not a problem. The main problem associated with Twinkle isn't with vandals - it's with well-meaning but inexperienced users who edit too quickly without taking time to think about what they are doing. Phil Bridger (talk) 10:18, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
I like Twinkle's speed, and it's one reason why I've stuck with it over other various other similar tools that I've tried. Everyone has a learning curve, and so it's one of those things you just have to deal with... SchuminWeb (Talk) 04:31, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm with SchuminWeb on this. Well-meaning users who aren't taking the time to think about edits can cause problems with or without automated tools. Please don't ruin the tool for those of us who are thinking about edits.--Fabrictramp | talk to me 20:31, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
How exactly would it be edited so that it required approval, since it is an in-browser JS tool? All of the other tools I can think of that require approval (AWB, NPWatcher, Huggle formerly, etc.) are separate programs which have to be downloaded, which is how we are able to limit access to them.   jj137 (talk) 21:28, 7 September 2008 (UTC)
I'm sure that from a technical standpoint, it's not only doable, but likely fairly easy to implement. All it would need to do would be to look at a check page to make sure you're on the list as the first step of a process. SchuminWeb (Talk) 03:15, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
And fairly easy to circumvent, just like AWB and all the other FOSS tools. ffm 19:46, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
  • As others have stated above, the vandals are already using a client-side version of this script, so adding an application process would just add unnecessary instruction creep. Also, Twinkle is what we tell people to use when we decline them at RFR, now we're going to send them to ANOTHER application process? No thanks. –xeno (talk) 19:52, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

"Attack" versus "Personal Attack"

CSD criteria 10 defines attack pages as pages that "serve no purpose but to disparage their subject or some other entity", but Twinkle's automated CSD warning sends a message that assumes a "personal" attack against a single individual. Many attack pages disparage groups of people, national governments, ethnic groups, sports teams, etc so this doesn't really make sense. {{subst:uw-create1}}, or {{subst:uw-defam1}} or something else other than {{subst:attack}} could have prevented this mess that I never meant to cause. How about if I say "pretty please with a cherry on top?" Beeblebrox (talk) 04:12, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Ok, ok I know what you're thinking, I could just uncheck the "notify" box and send some other warning myself. Well, uh, I guess I could at that, but I like having Twinkle think for me. Beeblebrox (talk) 04:25, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Tony Wilson, a request

Maybe I'm being over-sensitive here but I find the roll-over tip of CSD A1 (no context) a little tasteless. I do understand it's just supposed to be an example of bad writing. However, since it's clearly about the late Tony Wilson (who I happen to respect a lot) it does sting a bit. Could it be replaced by something that doesn't refer to real people? Thanks,    SIS  12:36, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

  • I'm not involved with managing Twinkle or anything, but could you please explain what the "roll-over tip" is, and/or state specifically how it is related to the late Mr. Wilson? thanks Beeblebrox (talk) 03:34, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
  • The tip is "He's a funny little man that founded Factory Records. Oh, and his wife looks great" (or something very similar, I'm quoting from memory). You can see it if you hover your mouse over the question mark in the CSD selection window. Tony Wilson started Factory Records and his wife (widow) is a former Miss England and Miss UK.    SIS  09:57, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Hey, thanks for clarifying that, I see what you mean, that clearly does refer to him. I don't see why it couldn't be changed to something like "Joe Schlub is the funny man who founded the awesome place in Schlubsburg" or something. By the way, The Fall live at the Hacienda is one of my favorite concert films ever. Beeblebrox (talk) 04:00, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Regarding TW..

Sorry if this question has been already answered before, but i just installed TW today. I find it amazing. Only one thing is that, do I have to go from page to page and waste time clicking to see if its vandalism or not, or is there a way, or like a list, that can show what vandalism just arrived and vandalism i can revert, instead of going from page to page, to check if its vandalism, or not. Thanks. II MusLiM HyBRiD II 18:03, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

If there was a list of vandalized articles a robot could fix it all. So, no, there's no quick way around it, you'll have to "waste time" and check the articles yourself. There are a few bots checking pages for very obvious vandalism (and reverting it) but most of it is still manual human labour. Good luck and happy hunting.    SIS  21:37, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

In your monobook.js page, remove the line that installs Twinkle. From User:AzaToth/twinkle.js you can see the various functions that the default Twinknle installation code installs, so instead add this:

importScript('User:AzaToth/twinklewarn.js');
importScript('User:AzaToth/twinklearv.js');

importScript('User:AzaToth/twinklexfd.js');
importScript('User:AzaToth/twinkleimage.js');

importScript('User:AzaToth/twinkleimagetraverse.js');

I went My Preferences today, just to see what there was to see, and I found the gadgets, and clicked on Twinkle. Then, I proceeded to have a good (and, I hope, responsible) time using it. It's wonderful! I always was jealous of people whose vandalism warnings made reference to the specific article vandalized. Anyway, I really, really like it. But now it's gone! What happened? I've been using Twinkle to delete pages (CSD) but no matter how I configure the options, I'm still having the article added to my watchlist and it's getting annoying. reverts not working

I've used Twinkle for over a year and become rather dependent. Alas, my faithful companion seems to be suffering from a few items not working as well as they used to.

Specifically, sometime between 3 and 6 weeks ago, the [rollback] [rollback] [vandalism] functions on user contributions have changed. The first one still works, but I don't think Twinkle provides that. The second one provides http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=whatever&diff=prev&oldid=nnnnnnnnn&twinklerevert=norm. The third one has the same thing except for norm at the end is replaced with vand. Activating these links doesn't revert; instead it shows the difference which would be reverted—if only it worked. Clicking the vandalism link causes these javascript error log entries:

I noticed the problem after Twinkle pretty much stopped working altogether a couple months back. Seems like it was several days after that a bunch of functionality returned. Then a little more a day or two later.

Mostly I'm using it with FireFox 3.0.2 on MSWin XP, but a few weeks ago FF2.x on Linux behaved the same way. I tried enabling use preferences/gadgets (and purged browser cache): no difference. I'm back to a modified monobook.js; I wonder if my old set of configuration options are having an undesired effect? I see the last few aren't mentioned in the documentation, and there are some new parameters since setting mine up. —EncMstr (talk) 05:52, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Comment. I've had the problem described a couple of times over the last several weeks, mostly when Wikipedia is giving lots of errors. I just reverted some vandalism now with TW and it worked flawlessly. The problem seems quite intermittent (at least for me.)--Fabrictramp | talk to me 23:19, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
Ditto I was cursing Twinkle and making rude remarks about it's mother till it began to seem that the problem was Wikipedia itself. I wish it worked at least some times. For me it's solidly 100% not working at all. It's kind of funny how it displays the difference I expected to make instead of reverting. The colors even seem melancholy somehow. —EncMstr (talk) 01:53, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
Please: if this feature is still working for anyone, could you capture the URLs which [rollback] [vandalism] generate and post here please? —EncMstr (talk) 21:19, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Sock reporting

I just used TW to create a sock case, but when it went to notify the puppet, it did in the manner of User talk:User:username. It notified the master fine, but not the puppet. It created the page, which I've submitted to CSD#U2, but if anyone is an admin, they can see it here User talk:User:Moleman 9000 if it gets deleted before anyone can read my message here. My curved tabs just disappeared, and I haven't updated my Twinkle settings in months. Is someone working on Twinkle? SchuminWeb (Talk) 01:45, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Twinkle's handling of redirects

I speedy-deleted Category:Boroughs of the United Kingdom as a C1 using TW, and Twinkle also deleted User talk:Tobias Conradi, a user talk page for a banned user that is redirected to the main user page. Twinkle saw #REDIRECT at the front, and a link to the category further down in this revision, in effect at the time, assumed that the page was a redirect to the category rather than what it was really redirecting to, and incorrectly deleted it as an R1.

Is there a way to fix this for other similar special cases like this, like making sure Twinkle only reads the first line of a redirect page before determining if it's deletable? In this case, the user talk page was already redirected, and then a bot came through and dropped the notice below the redirect, setting the situation up. Problem with IE

I use Internet Explorer, and have added Twinkle to my monobook.js file. I have also added the Lupin Anti-Vandal tool. I know Twinkle is not made specifically for IE, but Firefox does not work for me because of a separate problem. I the IE browser, Twinkle has the following problems:

  • The only way I can get the Twinkle tabs (csd, last, rrp, prod, xfd, unlink) to show up is by hitting ctrl+F5.
  • Even when I do this, the only ones that show up are prod, xfd, and unink.
  • No other Twinkle features work.

I have tried bypassing all caches I know of, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any ideas for fixing the problem, or should I just give up on Twinkle altogether. If there's another tool that enables csd and speedy warnings, that would be just as good. --Friginator 03:04, 08 October 2008 (UTC)

Twinkle would require a major rewrite to be able to support IE, which I highly doubt is going to happen. What is the "separate problem" that you're having with Firefox? Ioeth (talk contribs friendly) 14:10, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm sort of in the same position, how do I know it works? I've done everything. —Preceding unsigned comment added by A (talkcontribs) 15:27, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Alright, I'm going to see if I can help you two out. The first question I have for both of you is what skin are you using? If you're not sure, go to the skins tab under preferences. If "MonoBook (default) is not selected, you need to select it and use that skin; it's the only skin that these tools work with.
  • Parthian Scribe, your problem was that you had installed Friendly, not Twinkle. I went ahead and added the Twinkle installation to your monobook.js file, so please go into the gadgets are of your preferences and make sure that you don't have the checkboxes for Twinkle or Friendly ticked. Once you do that, you should be able to do CTRL + F5 in Firefox to clear your cache. After that, you should be able to see additional tabs on articles, user talk pages, etc., to the right of the standard tabs (article, edit this page, talk, etc.).
  • A, I'm not sure what problem you're having. I switched my interface over to use your monobook.js file, and everything looked fine. What browser are you using? What version? Have you made sure to do a CTRL + F5 to clear your cache? Are you sure you're using the right skin and don't have a gadget misconfiguration?

But a weird thing is, everytime I do clear my cache OR just press F5, other menus appear at the top, beside Article - Discussion - Edit. Bizarre problems mean Twinkle doesn't work at all

After looking through this page, I think my problems are similar to but not the same as others posted.

I'm having some severe problems - Twinkle has basically stopped working entirely over the last few days. It started working for a few minutes a few days ago, and then stopped entirely.

There are two main failures:

  • If I try to mark a page for CSD, I see the Twinkle screen with radio buttons for difference CSD criteria. But if I select one, nothing happens - it does not mark the page, the button is filled in and that is all.
  • If I try to revert vandalism, Twinkle will open the user's talk page but it will not actually revert the edit anymore. It just hangs at the point of reverting the edit and does not finish.

I'm using a Mac and have been trying in Firefox3.0 and 3.0.1+ and personal Firefox builds and Safari. If anyone can help, I'm fairly desperate to find the answer. Thank you! -FlyingToaster (talk) 07:11, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
