BanksIsland.svg[edit]

This image is blank. I think that you just need to retag the Banks Island image correctly. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 11:22, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is odd. I looked at "Banks Island.svg" and saved it to my computer. It got renamed to "668px-BanksIsland.svg.png". I clicked on the link you gave me and it saved "BanksIsland.svg" to my computer but as an unknown file type. When I renamed it to "BanksIsland.svg.png" I was unable to view it. This is the link to the Banks Island page with the blank image. I've checked this on three computers and they all show a blank. Strange. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 01:05, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What browser are you using, CBW? Internet Exploder can't do svg at all. That's why mediawiki converts svg images to png. Looking at the image in Safari, however, gives me the idea that it's a corrupted image. I can't view it - it's all transparent. ~Crazytales 01:14, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually the help was for me, Kennonv and the "SVG Issues" section below this one. There have been a number of SVG files that were very simple in nature (10Kb or so) that didn't display.
Internet Exploder (6.0.2900 SP2) does display SVG. However Netscrape 8.1.2 doesn't, which is what I use. I don't think it is a browser issue. I see the same issue in Netscape 7.2-Mozilla 5.0.
I would imagine the issue is with whatever engine at Wiki that converts SVG into PNG format. I can change the scale of the SVG image in Wiki, say 300px to 320px, and the image will display correctly. I don't mind saving the images as PNG but it really defeats the whole purpose of using SVG. I was wondering if there is some tips or hints to get this engine to convert to PNG more successfully. I've been tweeking the images, but it's hit or miss. What I want is some tips, how many decimal places to use, don't embed glyphs, etc. Kennonv 02:36, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

SVG Issues[edit]

I have been creating SVG images in Adobe Illustrator. Are there specific settings for exporting an Illustrator image to SVG for Wiki? The images are not being displayed properly at different sizes (zoom levels) in Wiki. I want to provide images that can be seen a thumbnail image but also at greater detail without specifically programming for it. Also I want to take advantage of SVG smaller file sizes and I don't want to embed glyphs, but the results have been unreliable. (Also I have to upload the images repeatedly to see if they work in Wiki for Netscape 8.1.2 and eventually it stopped uploading images http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Severnaya_Zemlya.svg ). My first attempt at a gallery shows the issues: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User%3AKennonv%2Fgallery&diff=123694514&oldid=123686093. Any help would be appreciated.

Tell me what I need to feed Wiki's SVG to PNG engine so that it will render properly. Or do you suggest just using PNG files?
I recently dealt with the same problem. I found that Illustrator sets a document size which will set the image base resolution on the Image page, and be a good default for most situations. For the Wikipedia SVG→PNG engine to work, you wait - I remember waiting quite a while for my SVG to go through. Nihiltres(t.c.s) 04:34, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I'm not 100% sure about your problem, but when I went to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Severnaya_Zemlya.svg the image displayed as blank. I fixed that by purging (doing an ?&action=purge, ie I went to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Severnaya_Zemlya.svg?&action=purge). The image displaying as blank is a problem with the Wikipedia software, purging can fix it (and sometimes you need to purge different sizes). If my response doesn't help you could ask at the Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). Also keep in mind that any free images should be uploaded to Commons rather than English Wikipedia.--Commander Keane 04:37, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I didn't know about the purge option. But that didn't fix the gallery problem. I just want to know how to publish SVG documents successfully. If there are shortcomings in the Wiki-software, I'm all right with that. I can produce PNG images, instead of SVG images, and will if you suggest so.

Kyuss[edit]

Hi Kennov, the short answer is that it's unsourced trivia. There is certainly no reason to mention the history / break-up of the band as it is entirely irrelevant to the Greyhawk article. Trivia and minor pop-culture references are generally to be avoided without a clear source and explanation of their relevance to the topic at hand. This is the difference between WP being an encyclopedia and the "big list of everything, ever". Deiz talk 06:45, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I do apologize for deleting it without a reason. It could certainly be legitmately removed from the Kyuss article for being unsourced, but as the band is named after the character, it is somewhat relevant. It doesnt really work the other way around. Just because WP is full of unsourced material and pop-culture doesn't make it desirable - efforts are being made to ensure greater sourcing, verification of importance and accountability, something I believe in very strongly and will continue to do my part to uphold. Fair use rationale for Image:D.R.I. - Four of a Kind.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:D.R.I. - Four of a Kind.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:13, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Image:BanksIsland.svg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:BanksIsland.svg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. SVG maps[edit]

Thank you. I have some maps in mind, but little time to do them. How would you prefer that we work together? Mohonu (talk) 04:15, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
