Re:question on images[edit]

Hello oblivious. I am glad that you are welcoming me. Please frogive me my ignorance but I would like to know how to place an image (a small picture file) in an article. I am not getting any wiser with the helps. There seems to be no simple way. Thank you againMohonu 12:05, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No Mohonu, it is simpler. Let me break it down for you
  1. You upload an image
    • Once you are done uploading, the image can be seen from Image Page - this isnt actual image, its a page - e.g. This image
  2. Edit an article (or you can test it in your own sandbox) and place the image with Image Syntax
  3. Do a preview before saving and if placing and appearence is as desired, save the page
Let me show you some image syntax here.
Image syntax What it does ...and finally how it looks
This will place the image as it is, without any caption, any resizing
This resizes the image to default thumbnail size
This resizes the image to default thumbnail size AND aligns the image to the left
This resizes the image to default thumbnail size, aligns the image to center AND gives a caption to the image
This is image caption
You can find Extended image syntax here
Hope this helps. --Oblivious 15:39, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Air Maldives4.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Air Maldives4.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation.--Harryboyles 14:10, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seenu/ Addu[edit]

Thanks for your comments. I would not have been so confused if I had found a link or a comment on the amended page - perhaps I missed them? Anyway, the info is interesting and the reversion to "Addu" is tidier from an WWII historical point of view. I had thought that the naval base warranted a page to itself, as it is so separate. Peros Banhos[edit]

Hi Mohunu, I like your map Peros banhos.PNG. Would you consider adding some information to it: to draw a dashed line from the east point of Île Fouquet to the east point of Moresby Island, and marking the area east of it as "Peros Banhos Atoll Strict Nature Reserve". Thank you.--Ratzer 08:02, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't seen it on a map either, but the description talks about a straight line between the easternmost points of those islands (which I understand as neither cutting through the islands nor even one feet east of any island, just touching them).--Ratzer 09:05, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, the Strict Nature Reserves are explained here:[1]. I will look through that document to see what I can take from there.--Ratzer 11:30, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Maps disappeared[edit]

Hello Oblivious. I have noticed that some maps of the atolls of the Maldives have disappeared. For example Kaafu Atoll. Something seems to be wrong.Mohonu 07:00, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This image is being called from commons (its not physically located under en.wikipedia.org) and there appears to be a technical problem displaying them (the ones at commons) here. See wikipage of the image Image:Kaafu_Atoll.jpg --Oblivious 13:54, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, my mistake. There was a call to png image when it really was a jpg and since there wasnt a png file with this name in either wikipedia or commons, mediawiki (wikipedia software) generated this error --Oblivious 13:58, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Chagos map.PNG: unnamed Bank?[edit]

Hi there. Can you provide a source of the unnamed bank on the map, in the very north of the archipelago (north of Colvo Reef, northeast of Speakers reef). The Indian Ocean Pilot [2] says on page 104 that Speakers Bank is the farthest north of banks in the archipelago.--Ratzer 14:37, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Ithaa[edit]

Oblivious, I have a question about the whole Ithaa restaurant article. Is it OK in Wikipedia to promote a certain restaurant? It looks like an advertisement to me and its presence dubious in an Encyclopedia. I might be wrong though. That is why I am asking you.Mohonu 15:59, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Usually such articles are considered advertisement unless there is something notable about the place in question. In Ithaa's case it is notable for encyclopedia because it is the first of its kinds — first underwater restaurant. --Oblivious 14:17, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maldivian numbers[edit]

Hello there. I am trying to find Maldivian numbers written in Thanna script. I've searched the net but can only find transliterations. What I want is the numbers written in the actual grammar of Thanna. So, 'one' is 'ekeh', but how is this written using the letters of Thanna ? Thanks in advance. Nordensjold Archipelago[edit]

I tagged one of the articles with the "Merge" tag. If you feel like it, you can merge them yourself, just make sure people agree on the spelling of the name. Happy editing! KNewman 05:26, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, Mohonu! I've made redirects to Nordenskiöld Archipelago, just like you suggested. Why are you interested in this topic (I mean, Kara Sea and its islands etc.)? Where are you from yourself? Just want to get acquainted with you. KNewman 18:15, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mohonu, nice work on many articles about islands. I have a couple of minor questions. First, is there a particular reason to go with the German-style romanization Sibiryakow instead of the more usual Sibiryakov? Second, I get zero hits on Google searching for Oстрова фaддея, even without quotes. Is it really so minor that there's nothing about the islands on the web in Russian? Do you have Russian-language sources? Thanks. --Reuben 20:54, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If Britannica uses Sibiryakow, it's well enough established that we can keep it as is. I don't doubt your info about the Faddeya Islands, I was just quite surprised and wonder if perhaps there could be another name. --Reuben 06:11, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Got it! A Latin "a" had snuck into the Russian name. Fixed. :-) Now there are lots of hits in Russian. --Reuben 06:56, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

should be either Komsomolskaya Pravda Islands or Komsomolskoy Pravdy Islands (i.e. dropping or preserving the Russian genitive). Any objection if I move to Komsomolskoy Pravdy Islands? --Reuben 21:56, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Moved + redirects. Thanks. --Reuben 06:11, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Mohonu and Reuben, I am afraid we have to do another redirect based on this - [3]. KNewman 18:56, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think most of the Komsomolskaya Pravda Islands hits are about these islands. There are lots of pages that mention Komsomolskaya Pravda and islands, and only a very few that are actually talking about the Komsomolskaya Pravda Islands. Komsomolskoy Pravdy Islands seems to be the most common, and as far as I can tell, Komsomolsky Pravdy is just a misspelling. --Reuben 21:07, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Voronin[edit]

Got the dates. The birth place is given as "Sumsky Posad," which might or might not be is not Sumy, now in the Ukraine. --Reuben 17:06, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Zhelonskyy Islands[edit]

Nothing for Zhelonsky, but they could be the Shelonsky Islands: group of islands located in the east of the Yansky Gulf of the Laptev Sea. [4]. I find some hits under "Shelonskiye Islands." --Reuben 19:06, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm surprised; I do find some hits for "Shelonskiye Islands". Nothing very detailed, but there are at least map + lat + long and extreme amateur radio operator lists. --Reuben 00:26, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
All I was able to glean is that the main Shelonsky Islands are Vostochny (=eastern) and Zapadny (=western). Makar and others seem to be nearby but not included within the Shelonsky Islands. This page mentions Makar [5] and indicates that it's marshy. This map [6] has a locator dot for Makar, and Vostochy Shelonsky is the island just S and slightly E of it. This site [7] has a few Makar pictures. --Reuben 18:22, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nordvik[edit]

Dumping links for now:

  • [8] description of 1990 tourist/research trip, mentions camp closed in mid 1940's when Americans arrived in Nordvik (presumably war related?)
  • [9] notes from same trip, mentions settlement closed in 1956, prison camp closed mid 1940's, worked by internal deportees rather than prisoners after camp closure
  • [10] newspaper article about same expedition
  • Lots of pages confirm there was a camp

Ob islands[edit]

They're in the Gulf of Ob, near the mouth of the river and far from the open sea, but just above the Arctic Circle. There's a nature reserve that includes some of the islands. Documents here [11], map of the islands you asked about here [12]. Actually, the Arctic Circle passes right through Narechi Island around longitude 71.5 E. --Reuben 08:54, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This lies in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. --Reuben 08:57, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to the official name of the wetlands preserve, these islands are in the Gulf of Ob of the Kara Sea. Very nice map, by the way. I agree they are a bit out of place in the Kara Sea article, but how about this: describe the islands in Gulf of Ob, and then add a brief description of the Gulf of Ob to Kara Sea, including a mention of islands. --Reuben 19:11, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Firnley & Geiberg islands[edit]

Random finds... here's a description in English: [13], see pg. 30: "From the west the Geiberg Islands are covering the entrance to the Vilkitski Strait from the east – the Firnleya Islands. The coasts are covered with tundra vegetation and stony scattering. On the north and the south they are raised above the sea level, but the northern coast is mainly higher then the south. The rivers, which are flowing into the Strait, became shallow to the beginning of the navigation and aren’t significant." There's a description of sightings of wolves and other wild animals on Geiberg. [14] A polar meteorological station was established on Geiberg in 1940 to aid navigation of the northern sea route [15]. A first-person account of the Taymyr's voyage in 1938, including a bear hunt and snow blindness on Geiberg Islands: [16]. An account of a ski expedition in 1994 mentions that the polar station is abandoned, with millions of rubles of equipment still there: [17]. Variant Romanizations are Firnley, Firnleya, Geyberg, Geyberga, Geiberg, Geiberga. --Reuben 19:11, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Island names etc.[edit]

Hi Mohonu, I'm not editing Wikipedia articles myself right now, but I'm sure your work will be top-notch when you get back after the weekend. Good question about the names. If you haven't seen it already, you'll probably be very happy to learn that Nansen's book is online at Google Books: [18]. There are even a few pictures! Most of the island names can be easily understood if you read the list of financial backers for the expedition at the beginning of Chapter 2. Consul Axel Heiberg is #1 on the list of private individuals. Also listed are Mr. Thos. Fearnley, merchant; and Messrs. Ringnes & Co, brewers. There are no occurrences of "Mona" in the book! Based on this site [19] the Mona Islands were also named by the Nansen expedition, but I can't explain the name. Nansen doesn't seem to have married... --Reuben 06:54, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Axel Heiberg also has a Canadian island and an Antarctic glacier to his name. He was associated with the Ringnes brewery, and Amund Ringnes and Ellef Ringnes also have Canadian islands named for them: Amund Ringnes Island, Ellef Ringnes Island. The Canadian islands are so named because the brewers financed Sverdrup too. --Reuben 07:23, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It turns out Nansen did marry, it's just not mentioned in our article for some reason. His wife was Eva Sars. Interesting bio in another online book here [20].--Reuben 23:25, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mona Island[edit]

Hi there, Mohunu! I did some research, and you know what's funny? Most of the articles in Russian Google refer to Mona, Puerto Rico, an island in the Carribbean :). Your guess about Mona being a female name was a bit off course, although there is such a name. My guess would be that the island is named after some gentleman, whose last name was Mon (Mona is a genetive case, meaning "island of Mon"). Now we have to find out who that Mon was. I enjoy reading your articles about the Kara Sea islands, so keep up the good work and let me know if you need any help! Take care. KNewman 17:21, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I got it! Here's what I found: "HENRIK MOHN (1835-1916), Norwegian meteorologist, was born at Bergen May 15 1835, his family being of German origin. He was educated at the Cathedral school, Bergen, and afterwards entered the university of Christiania, where he took his doctor's degree in 1852. In 1861 he became an observer at the Christiania observatory, in 1866 was elected professor of meteor- ology at Christiania University, and in 1866 was appointed. director of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, which he was largely instrumental in founding. He retained this post until 1913. Mohn's meteorological researches were of the highest: importance. His Etudes sur les mouvements de l'atmosphere, written in collaboration with the mathematician Goldberg (1876-8), is a work of great value for the study of the dynamics of the atmosphere, and the authors continued their researches on the subject in various papers contributed to the Zeitschrift der Oest. Meteor. Gesell. (1877-8). Mohn did much work on the subject of storms, publishing storm maps of the Atlantic (1870-1;1, and he also carried out researches (1876-8) on the meteorology and oceanography of the northern Atlantic. He worked ou t and published the meteorological observations of various polar expeditions, including those of Nansen in the " Fram " (1893-6), the second " Fram " expedition (1898-1902), and Amundsen's south polar journey (1910-2), some of his papers appearing as supplements to Petermann's Mitteilungen. He also published many articles on the climate of Norway and conducted investigations into the use of the hypsometer, which are of great importance for the study of the physics of the earth. Besides the works mentioned above, he produced Grundziige der Meteorologic, which has gone through numerous enlarged editions since its first appearance in 1872 as a small text-book. Mohn was a member of many foreign scientific societies, and was senior hon. member of the Royal Meteorological Society of London, having been elected in 1874. He died at Christiania Sept. 12 1916."

This comes from 1911 Britannica, so it's weird we don't have an article on this gentleman. So this is the guy the island is named after. Too bad the article doesn't say who named the island after him. It's gotta be the Russians :). KNewman 17:35, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Me again :). There's an article about Henrik Mohn in Norwegian Wikipedia, if that helps you any. KNewman 17:43, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good find! It was surely the Norwegian Nansen who named the islands. Here's an article by Nansen using the spelling "Mohn's Islands" in the Geographical Journal (1897): [21], see second page. --Reuben 17:39, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And I guess we have to rename the article into Mohn Islands, since they're named after Henrik Mohn. KNewman 16:53, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Firnley & Mona[edit]

The article by Nansen was visible a few days ago... I may have been on a university network with special access. I'm not sure. I can't see it now, from home. As for the mention of Firnley, that chapter does mention the islands, but it doesn't seem to say too much about them in particular. They just happen to be sailing past them at one point. --Reuben 20:57, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rusanov[edit]

Russian Wikipedia has an article for ru:Русанов, Владимир Александрович, including a photo and a date & place of death. That last piece of info, however, does have a question mark next to it: 1913, Kara Sea (?). --Reuben 06:33, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Rusanov vladimir.PNG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. Echinku and stuff[edit]

Hi there, Mohonu! You were right about the Echinku being one of the names of the Velikaya River. It was mentioned in some Soviet document describing the rivers of Yakutia (got it online), so I guess we could put it back. As for the Kara Sea islands you write about, I want to ask you something. Could you please drop me a line every time you're about to submit an article about any of them? I see you name these articles as they sound in Russian in genetive case (like Voronina Islands or Komsomolskoy Pravdy Islands, when in English it really should be Voronin Islands and Komsomolskaya Pravda Islands). This way we won't have to create redirects, correct your maps and stuff. Thanks and happy editing! KNewman 21:00, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Herald Island[edit]

The Great Soviet Encyclopedia states that the area of Herald Island is approx. 10 sq km (answering your question to Reuben). KNewman 10:12, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The area in the article comes from the Russian Wikipedia article, but it should be 8 sq km. The current 82 sq km is a typo on my part. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to look for what happened to the icebreakers... Keep up the excellent work! --Reuben 12:42, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A reference in English is here, under "Geographical features". Regards. --Reuben 00:01, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the island is very narrow so the maps might be exaggerating the width a little bit to make it more visible. --Reuben 00:01, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merging[edit]

I think you meant that note for User:KNewman, not me. Anyway, there's not likely to be any controversy, so just go ahead and do it: turn the article you want to merge into a redirect to the article you want to keep. Instructions are here: WP:REDIR. The general merge instructions are here: WP:MERGE. They note that making a merge is like any other edit, so you should discuss to resolve disagreements, but there's no general requirement to always go through a formal process beforehand. In this case, I am sure nobody will object; and if they do, they will probably undo it. You can start a discussion then if needed. --Reuben 18:25, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mohonu! I redirected Sibiryakov Is. and Zhokhov Is., but I can't really agree with the names of the rest of the articles, for they look wrong if you ask a Russian. It should be Izvestiy TSIK Islands, because "iy" is exactly how the Russian letter "й" is pronounced in English. TSIK is short for TSentralniy Ispolnitelniy Komitet and should be in capital letters, as it is in Russian (ЦИК). Same goes for Oleniy Island (not Oleni Island). Unless this is all spelled this way in most of the English sources, which I leave to you. As for Baron Toll and Eduard Toll, which one should be the one and only? My guess is Eduard Toll, please advise, because I haven't touched it either. KNewman 19:08, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I moved it to Izvestiy TSIK Islands, for I think this was what you had in mind. With Oleniy Island the situation is tricky. Google Fight says that Oleniy beats Oleni, but, in turn, Oleny beats Oleniy, so I am confused now which one is ultimately the right one. KNewman 19:19, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Baron Eduard von Toll moved to Eduard Toll. KNewman 19:22, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The reference to the Kamchatka Peninsula must be mistaken, that's quite a long way off and in the wrong direction... should it be a different peninsula? I'm always interested to read your articles! --Reuben 09:27, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry to hear about your accident, and very glad that you were both OK! --Reuben 17:57, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there, Mohonu! I've read the Byrranga article and found some mistakes (at least, I believe they could be). I've consulted the Great Soviet Encyclopedia and it says that 1) these mountains run for about 1100 km (and not 600 km); 2) the highest peak is 1146 m (to be exact); 3) as for bitter winters up there, the average temperature in January is ranging from -30C to -33C, which is peanuts (trivia: I was in Moscow during the winter of 2006, when it was -34C for a couple of days and I saw a guy eating an ice cream at the bus station :)). That is, of course, if one is to trust the Great Soviet Encyclopedia in terms of geography. What do you think? KNewman 20:12, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Donhiyala.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Donhiyala.PNG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Re: Corrections in map of Addu Atoll[edit]

Oblivious, "Hikihera" for Hikahera is not the only error in the Addu Atoll map. The island mentioned as "Kudavaahera" is actually Us Hera. I have made a corrected version of the map, but there is no option to upload it. How can I do it?Mohonu (talk) 05:15, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The map has been moved to commons since my original upload here to en.wiki. You will need to go to its commons page and then upload image to commons, with the same filename. This would keep a historic record of the original file, should anyone need to refer it. (To upload, you will need to create an account at commons). If you still need more instructions, send me an email. Thanks --Oblivious (talk) 18:17, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Donhiyala.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Donhiyala.PNG. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 18:58, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image source problem with Image:Icebreaker stalin.PNG[edit]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Icebreaker stalin.PNG.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:47, 27 February 2008 (UTC). Oh. Well that's okay, I was just wondering. Cheers, and happy editing, Basketball110 what famous people say ♣ 18:54, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Unsourced[edit]

Actually the articles on the atolls have very little reference in English. It becomes hard to find references for the articles. I generally dislike addition of any material without proper citation. Not only me, it has been discussed previous times also by many people and by wikipedia administration. Even Jimmy Wales say that instead of using fact tags, remove unsourced material.

[22]

However it is hard to find more references on the atolls. I think a google book search may be helpful. Or if you can find name of books, you can mention it in the articles. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 07:55, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at this reference [23]. It support the fact that Manuhangi has no permanent inhabitant. It may be used. Otolemur crassicaudatus (talk) 08:09, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Chamisso Island, and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Chamisso Wilderness. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 09:06, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request to move article Karaginskiy Island incomplete[edit]

You recently filed a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move the page Karaginskiy Island to a different title - however your proposal is either incomplete or has been contested as being controversial. As a result, it has been moved to the incomplete and contested proposals section. Requests that remain incomplete after five days will be removed.

Please make sure you have completed all three of the following:

  1. Added NewName at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved, replacing "NewName" with the new name for the article. This creates the required template for you there.
  2. Added to the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved, to automatically create a discussion section there.
  3. Added to the top of today's section here.

If you need any further guidance, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves or contact me on my talk page. - JPG-GR (talk) 18:12, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Walrus Islands[edit]

Hi there, Mohonu! I wrote the Russian name for these islands in the article. I try to follow most of your article and fix some of the names, style etc. So you took care of all your prolems, I reckon? Glad you're back to the editing of the Russian Arctic articles :). Drop me a line if anyhting. I'll be absent for a week starting tomorrow, though. KNewman (talk) 13:27, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a lot of time, either. Creating maps of the Arctic Islands was a good way to build on my SVG skills. If you would like an SVG map, let me know the area/article. Actually, send me a "wish list" on "my talk" and I'll do what I can. Kennonv (talk) 19:01, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mohonu, would you mind uploading your nice Peros Banhos maps, such as Image:Peros_banhos_map2.PNG, to wikimedia commons? Or mind if I do it? Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:ND2573.JPG.

If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 18:05, 29 June 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. RavichandarMy coffee shop 18:05, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright[edit]

Well, the copyright claim simply states "I, the copyright holder of this work....". It doesn't contain details about the source of the image. In such cases, a line or two about the source of the image will do good. However, I observed that you have added the details about the source of the image now. :-) -RavichandarMy coffee shop 02:36, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Arctic vs Polar[edit]

Hi there, Mohonu! You see, the word polar has its special meaning in this category. The thing is that this category includes several explorers of the Antarctica as well (e.g. Aleksei Treshnikov). You will have to create two separate categories then - Russian and Soviet explorers of the Arctic and Russian and Soviet explorers of the Antarctica. I guess, people will have to vote on this issue. Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Catalan baseball teams, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Catalan baseball teams has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Catalan baseball teams, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Orphaned non-free image (Image:Upali1w.JPG)[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading Image:Upali1w.JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 00:14, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Pil'gyn[edit]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Pil'gyn. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pil'gyn. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:09, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for a book[edit]

Hello! I am writing to you because you edited the page "Maldivian Folklore" on Wikipedia. I am working on this topic and would like to read the book by Xavier Romero-Frias, The Maldive Islanders, A Study of the Popular Culture of an Ancient Ocean Kingdom. I was wondering if you can help me with this research, since the available copies in the web seems all to be unavailable.

Thank you.

Better source request for File:FaaiteISS012-E-7330.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:FaaiteISS012-E-7330.PNG. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 01:09, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 11:15, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! The file File:FangataufaISS002E7354.PNG has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Higher resolution version available on the commons here. Not nominating for speedy deletion because it is a different file format.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
