After reading the article, I agree. Kapskarmo is only a local politician, and unless they are mayors or something, they fail WP:BIO. I will support the article's deletion if you nominate it. Regarding the categorization, I just recategorized it because I had first sorted Terje Søviknes under "T" rather than "S", realized that, then made a skim through the category to find others who had been listed by first name rather than surname. "Centre" vz. "Village"

A "Villages in Norway" category has popped up by itself. Which accentuates the question about the right term for the Norwegian tettsted. My vote is pretty clearly for village. Webster has for village: "a settlement usually larger than a hamlet and smaller than a town". Which is what we are looking for, exactly. Note that village in English is not an exact synonym for landsby in Norwegian. -- Egil 10:14, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

I agree. Moreover, Category:Villages in Norway belongs to the subcategory Category:Villages, whereas Category:Centers in Norway does not really belong to any category. Can we just be bold and move all articles in Category:Centers to Category:Villages? In addition, of course, to other, misplaced articles in Category:Cities in Norway and Category:Towns in Norway such as Koppang. "Landscapes" of Norway » (Traditional) Districts of Norway

Hello Egil. About the awkward rendering of landskap into the cognate "landscape". I have inserted a short section on all counties that list these smaller zones of local identity, folklore and dialect. I have called these districts and changed from landscapes where appropriate. BUT, I still feel that traditional district would be optimal, since district alone sounds like something that has to do with health care or voting or mail service. //Big Adamsky 07:22, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

I have no strong feelings here, traditional district is OK too (historical would be wrong, since they still exist). In addition to districts being unified in a cultural and geographical sense, in many cases the distrcts have administrative meaning too, since it is often the case that municipalities will organize common entities for utilities, health care, education etc that covers a traditonal district. For all images acted upon, save a local copy of the image in case deleting the image turns out to have been a mistake." OrphanBot is performing exactly as specified. extending to a week

It's fine if you've extended it, but the reason I chose such a small time is because it's a school IP, so most likely, the person vandalising will move on in at least 1-3 hours and any new people will end up suffering. Blocking for a week is fine for a private IP address, but public ones affect many people, so i tend not to go beyong 24 hours for them. Afraid not. Google maps terms and conditions says: For individual users, Google Local, including local search results, maps, and photographic imagery, is made available for your personal, non-commercial use only. Etc.

What are you interested in? There are some satelite photos and even maps what are available, but generally not very much, because Norway (as does the rest of Europe) issues public map data on commercial terms only. -- Egil 12:42, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Ptolemy spellings

I am currently tidying up the Ptolemaic links in Wikipedia, prior to doing a disambiguation page for this term (it currently redirects to Ptolemaic dynasty, when many of the Ptolemaic links refer to Ptolemy). I am also tidying up the Ptolomaic links (a mis-spelling of Ptolemaic that is redirected to the correct spelling). I noticed that User:Egil/Sandbox/rktect is linked to Ptolomaic. I guess it doesn't matter that much, and the content has changed drastically since you wrote the account about rktect, and it is effectively an archive, but I thought I'd drop a note here to let you know. When you make claims about someone being a sockpuppet or acting against 3RR (as you do here), you must provide some evidence. Otherwise you should refrain from making such claims. Throwing about acusations will only further a conflict. Hi! I got in touch with you a few months ago about an IP editor changing population figures for Norwegian towns - well, he's at it again, see here. Even if the figures are correct, no source or methodology for the figures are given, and he's not changing the accompanying date (i.e. as of 200x the popn. was... ). I'm not an expert on the topic so I wonder if you could investigate. This is a particularly troublesome IP for edits to UK geography articles, so it might be worth keeping an eye on. Sturve Geodetic Arc

Greetings, Egil. I have been doing some research to expand the article of the Hogland island in the Finnish Gulf. In that conjunction I came across the Struve Geodetic Arc, which has one (or two?) points on the island. However, in the article on SGA the points in Russia are a little strangely marked, and I tracked back the original edition to you. It says:

Russia

   * "Mäki-päälys" (Mäkipällys) in Kingisepp
   * "Hogland, Z" (Gogland, Tochka Z) in Kingisepp

Now; Mäkinpäällys is a hill on Hogland (spelled Gogland, when transscribed from cyrillic letters), but Kingisepp is a small town in Russia close to the Estonian border. (See eg. Map of Russia) If we examine the description of the arc for instance at [Struve Geodetic Arc - A tour de force in land surveying before the satellite era (National Land Survey of Finland) and open the pop-up "Struve-brochure(pdf)" (Which I didn't manage to make a link of...) we see that the arc doesnt go anywhere near Kingisepp, (Neither does it go near the town Kuressaare, that in the history has been named Kingissepp also) though there is a dotted line from Tartu (Dorpat) to some observatory near St. Petersburg, which I don't know the meaning of, that may go right over Kingissepp. But if we look at the magnification of the original, there actually seems to be two dots close to each other on the same hill. "Tochka" means "second" or "number two" in Russian, if I recall right.

I found out what was the problem. Apart from being a town, Kingisepp (or actually Kingiseppsky) is also an administrative region, to which Hogland also is counted. I will slowly correct it in the different projects. (Though the ones where I don't have a signature, are very sceptic. The german one throwed it out immediately, as "Undeutsches Deutsch", and nynorsk took some convincing...) Islander(Scandinavia) 01:26, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

It has been a few years since I wrote my thesis about this but we need not to forget that the SGA also used material from previous triangular measurments of the areas it passed through as well as SGA calculations for the new triangulation work later. In some documents from those measurements you can see odd bulges i.e. in the north (where they used Maupertius points and measurements) [2], that is one reson why it is deviating from the Tartu meridian. I have seen documents in the Finnish Geodetic Institute where there different measurements are on the same map. It could also be a matter of misunderstanding. MoRsE 15:45, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

Holmenkollen ski jump

I saw what you did regarding the Holmenkollen and the Holmenkollen ski jump and I like what you did. I do have a problem though with what was done and that is would it not make more sense to have the ski jump as part of the Holmenkollen ski festival? My reasoning behind this is that the jump is the centerpiece of the festival though you also have to include the compeitions such as the cross country skiing, ski jumping, nordic combined, and biathlon. I am in the process of overhauling the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and was planning on returning to the Holmenkollen article to include the biathlon winners and to put in more information on the ski jump as part of the 2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. This article has the potential of reaching "Good Article" status, but it needs some more information to justify this. Would it make more sense to change this article's name to the Holmenkollen ski festival with the ski jump? Look at some of the winners and medalists that now have to be overhauled. You are talking legends like Thomas Wassberg, Thorleif Haug, Stefania Belmondo, Julija Tchepalova, Lauritz Bergendahl among others. Chris 12:59, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

No problem with that - my main thing was to seperate the geographical area in Oslo called Holmenkollen from the ski arena and ski jump. Leading Edge

I added some substance and references to the Leading Edge (company) article which you very correctly nominated for AfD due to lack of substantiated notability. I found references showing the company's role as a leading PC clone company (their sales were in the top 10 among PC companies at the peak), and some details of their eventual demise. The clones worked well (I fire up one last year which had lived unpowered in the attic for about 8 years, and after a little TLC it worked as well as new). "Every page in the article namespace should belong to at least one category. Categories should be major topics that are likely to be useful to someone reading the article." Kappa Sigma is a useful category to "someone reading" all the articles I tagged.

Hi there. Following a conversation here, I was told that you might be able to help work out what this "Old Bishop's Palace" is in Oslo? My interest stems from the reference to James I of England marrying his wife (Anne of Denmark/Norway) there. But there is confusion over whether this is an earlier structure (different from the existing one), and when the current building was built. Once again, thanks for your reply over there, it really made things a lot clearer. Here is the bit I'm still puzzling over. Would you be able to explain the references to a mayor called "Christian Mule"? I found the following at this blog:

"Oslo Ladegård was built on top of the old Bishops house from 1579. The site itself, however, contains remnants of buildings going back to around 1200. The medieval buildings were abandoned in 1554, and it rapidly decayed. The mayor Christian Mule took over and built his house over the eastern wing of the medieval structure in 1579. It was in this house that King James I of England married princess Anne of Denmark in 1589. Oslo Ladegård as you see it today is built in 1725. Lately the city of Oslo has reconstructed its baroque gardens."

I'm not sure if you had the time to follow all the links at Giano's talk page, but the key one is this, which has: "On 23rd November the royal couple stood in Christen Mules Gaard, in the great hall". This seems to imply to me that they didn't marry in the Bishop's Old Palace, but rather in the later structure built by this Christian Mule on the ruins of the Old Bishop's Palace? no:Christen Mule, born 1525, was mayor in Oslo on and off throughout the 16th century. This webpage says the last bishop moved out of the palace in 1554, that the palace into some state of disrepair, and that it was taken over by Mule in 1579. Mule then built new building in the eastern wing of the "fortress". So by 1589 Mules building should have been finished. Note also the Norwegian sources uses wording that almost suggests a "Bishops Fortress". The current building is from 1725, as mentioned. -- Egil 11:13, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for correcting me here. I (foolishly) mis-read the article Wikipedia has on Oslo Cathedral to mean that Hallvards was an earlier building on the same site. I now see it was at a different location. Apologies for that. Unfortunately, I created Hallvards Cathedral as a redirect to Oslo Cathedral. Um, would you possibly, ever so kindly, be able to do a stub article for Hallvards? Otherwise I should really put that redirect up for deletion. <cringe> Carcharoth 15:45, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Political reasons

Thanks for clearing up the mystery of the Bishop's Palace (and the apostrophe, which varies from book to book in English). Re this edit, I feel I must ask you to provide a full reference for it, since the article is otherwise fully referenced, particularly for controversial points. By the way, I am aware of this theory, but since my modern books on the subject do not credit it, I felt it better to leave it out of the article (see my comments on the talk page). However, if you insist on its inclusion, the comment can be accommodated in the article if referenced with publication details (I can't reference it myself, as I don't have Munch, though I have historians who cite him on other points). qp10qp 21:16, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

I hope you will forgive me for being a dreary stickler here, but the first thing to say is that the page does not pass wikipedia's guidelines for reliable sources, being an unpublished translation by a self-confessed amateur. Even so, I don't doubt the genuineness of these documents, which have already been researched by historians such as David Harris Willson and used in their accounts of the wedding.

But in any case I'd further point out that the documents, which I read the other day when Carcharoth directed me to them, in themselves give no support at all to the idea that there were political reasons for Anne's delay. That suggestion is to be found in the notes at the end by Sutherland himself, where he quotes one anonymous historian he contacted, who dismisses the opinion of all Scots historians and, it seems to me, all previous mainstream historical analysis. I do not see anywhere Munch himself voicing this argument; we must reference the theory directly to one of his publications (you could perhaps ask at a library).

And I feel there are many flaws in the idea: for example, why not delay by staying at home in the first place? And why go to Flekkerø? According to the contemporary writer Calderwood, Lord Dingwall landed at Leith and reported that "he had come in company with the Queen's fleet three hundred miles, and was separated from them by a great storm: it was feared that the Queen was was in danger upon the seas". What also strikes me is the complete lack in the Scottish sources, even from those who were with Anne, of any mention of diplomatic concerns that the Danes wished to delay the wedding.

I am not against having this theory in the article, especially because it is intriguing and I like complexity. But we must source it properly, so I will endeavour to see if I can do so myself. qp10qp 12:16, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Can GeoHack be rewritten to function with Mars locations ?

Hello! Thanks for your extension :) Very good. Could it be rewritten to work with NASA WorldWind, Google Mars, and so on ? I am not that familiar with Wikipedia extensions. I have started a Source Forge project http://spacedatawiki.sourceforge.net/ The projects direction is under review, but it will probably write any extra needed extensions for space/Mars pages. 'Greek' Measurements Mess

Hi Egil. I've been going over the article titled Ancient Greek units of measurement. It's plainly a mess and I say so on the discussion page there. I saw your name there. The article appears to have been dominated by a contributor called User:Rktect, whose user page is a revelation. His assertions about lengths are quite lunatic and I'm thinking of deleting them. You have my absolute and full support. You may also want to consider that Rktect was forever banned from editing articles which relate to weights and measures (metrology) by the arbitration comity (see Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Rktect) in 2005. I've now revised the page in question. I've based it on Athenian units and I've cleared out the specious knowledge of Mr Rktect (I doubt if he is even a real architect). Frankly I wasn't sure if I should contact you or Magnus Manske. It says that GeoHack is based on the mapsources extension by you, so maybe you know how to help me. I'm trying to have interwikilinks betwen different translations of the toy. The template is at Template:GeoTemplate/Lang and right now, the only thing missing is type and region. These two do not get transfered from one language to the other. I tried using #ifeq but it gives no resolts (I was so sure this would work: {{#ifeq:{region}|{region}||_region{region} }}{{#ifeq:{type}|{type}||_type:{type} }}). I then tried asking for help on the talk page, but they just got confused what the differences was from this template and the normal interwikilinks on the left hand side. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Amoi.gif}

Thank you for uploading Image:Amoi.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

• That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
• That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

Error on Map sources/GeoHack

I'm not sure you are the one I should tell this to, but I try. I followed the map coordinates references from the Sognsvann article, and on the right side of the Map sources/GeoHack page three Norwegian resources are shown. Map sources/GeoHack (Japan)

I'm not sure if I should talk this here. Please let me know the place if it should not be here.

I found one site does not work properly in GeoHack. Geographical Survey Institute (in Japan) has parameters b(for latitude) and l(for longitude). The parameter b should be formated like {latdegabs}{latminint}{latsecdec}, but {latminint} and {latsecdec} should be prefixed by 0 when the value < 10. For example, {latminint} in parameter b should be '06' when {latminint} is 6. One Japanese user tried to fix the problem by editing ja:Template:GeoTemplate with {{ifexpr:{latminint}<10|0{latminint} |{latminint} }}, but it doesn't work with toolserver. It's same situation on {lonminint} and {lonsecdec}.

Could you change GeoHack that {latminint}, {latsecdec}, {lonminint} and {lonsecdec} have 0-prefix when the values < 10, or could you make new values like {latminint0}, {latsecdec0}, {lonminint0} and {lonsecdec0} for 0-prefixed ? Thanks, --NISYAN (talk) 07:18, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Angle of view: effective focal length

The definition of “effective focal length” in Angle of view seems at odds with common usage (e.g., Sidney Ray's Applied Photographic Optics, 3rd ed, p. 47) and with that in the article focal length. GIS Problem

Hello Egil, I'm not sure this is right venue for this question. If it isn't please lead me to the right place, I just didn't know where to do it. We just installed your extension Gis on the Venciclopedia. It was quite easy, thanks for such great application. The reason I'm writting is because I'm having some very minor problems with it. Those being that {type}, {title} and {region} are not showing up on mapsources even though it shows up on neighbors. You can see an example on this city, Coro (the geolink is on the template to the right, next to the the "world" icon). In the case of {title} the problem is that it shows the actual page (Especial:Geo) instead of the the one linked to the coordinates.

The other minor problem is that I want to change the code so it stops showing W for West and make it show O for Oeste, because my page is in spanish. I found some "W" and 'W's in GeoParam (3 instances), but when I do it the link doesnt render and errors as wrong format. Is there any other page where I should change this?

Open Street Map

Hi Egil. I've done a lot of work to making pin maps on wikipedia from OpenStreetMap, recently I created Template:Location map Norway Oslo actually to display landmarks!! However I just came across the geohack on German wiki. When you click the geo globe on German wiki now it features on the open street map at different zoomable levels without having to leave the site. This would absolustely ideal for english wikipedia and end a long term disagreement over set pin maps and to provide the option for zoomable maps iwthin wikipedia itself. Could you please import the technology they are using on German wikipedia to display open street maps within the wiki site itself. This would be perfect and would mean we could probably not bother with the city pins. Would it be possible to display these zoomable open street maps within article infoboxes themselves? An example. See Harris Theater. If we had the zoomable open street map within the infobox theatre we would not need that pin locator. By default there could be none but a "Click map" option within the infobox. Hi. I totally get your objection. It is a short article and thus it seems strange to repeat information. There are a lot of other users who have been wondering about that too. The reason why it has to be like that is that the lead section is a summary of the whole article (per WP:LEAD) and not just an intro. You should be able to only read the lead section and still get an idea of what the entire article is about. You cannot have information in the lead section, which is not in the rest of the artcle. MSU Interview

Dear Egil,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. 127 film - relevance of C.F. Foth comment?

Hi,

I'm writing to ask about this edit you made over 10 years ago(!!!) because the content is still in the article, but I don't understand its relevance.

The (slightly modified) version currently says;

127 is a film format for still photography. The image format is usually a square 4×4 cm, but rectangular 4×3 cm and 4×6 cm are also standard. Oddly, C. F. Foth & Co. used 36×24 mm (the same size as is standard for 135) for its first “Derby” model.

I don't understand the relevance of the fact that "C. F. Foth" (whoever they are) used 36 x 24 for their first model to what came before. Could you please clarify this? (You can comment at Talk:127_film#C._F._Foth_.26_Co). Much appreciated, thank you! Ubcule (talk) 23:52, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Medieval weights and measures

Hi! I came across Medieval weights and measures and found some rather strange portions of it. I looked through the edit history and noticed that it seemed to have been rather badly damaged by an editor named Rktect. It appears you have some history with him. :-) Anyway, the damage seemed pretty extensive, and there hadn't been that much subsequent editing, so I went ahead and just reverted the article to the way it was in 2005. There probably were some subsequent good changes and fixes that ought to be reapplied; since you wrote much of the article in the first place, maybe you'd like to take another look at it. —Emufarmers^(T/C) 22:06, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

hi Egil, I would rather like to work with you on creating a proper stub (to begin with) on Zi Corporation. I am afraid, in the current form (your draft) it will face similar fate yet again. We would need a little more beyond the patent wars to substantiate the company , so as to disambiguate the article from a news column. Please let me know what you think of it. personally, I feel bad for each article deleted without an attempt being made to really check if it cannot exist. An article is notable based on the notability laws which I am not going to read out to a senior editor like you and make a joke of myself. There is enough information around Zi Corporation available from credible sources that can substantiate the notability aspect. Also, the patent war will be another good section in the same article. And yes, article needs to be cross linked with Nuance (and vice-versa). I guess an infobox and two/three sections will be good enough to populate a stub ? Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.
