Speaks Spanish fluently?

Where does the idea of Kobe speaking Spanish fluently comes from? He demonstrated how well he still retained his Italian fluency but he couldn't even get some words in Spanish that were similar to Italian in an interview. He may know quite a bit of Spanish, but is it enough to warrant fluency? Kobe Bryant is gay he told espn in his interview I understand everyone has their own rating scale, just as my Brazilian friends insist that I speak Portuguese fluency but I never do consider myself fluent due to the numerous domains where the vocabulary is non-existent, but I think it's fair to say that Kobe isn't fluent in Spanish. Well, the ref says he speaks to Gasol in Spanish, but it doesn't explicitly say he is fluent. Maybe he only knows certain phrases. I've removed "fluently" from the article. Zagalejo^^^ 22:09, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Looking through YouTube, he was asked in 2008 in a press conference to respond to a reporter in Spanish, and after joking "Where's Pau when I need him," he struggled to get out a brief response in (as he called it) Spanglish (and again jokes that Gasol should have given him a cheat-sheet). A couple years later (post-game interview Lakers Vs Timberwolves Game 8, 2010) he is interviewed briefly in Spanish and responds pretty fluently, and there are other more recent examples of him being interviewed pretty fluently in Spansih. It certainly doesn't appear that he learned to speak Spanish fluently while growing up in Italy as the current text suggests. Article states Kobe Bryant is retired, though later states he will retire at the end of the 2015-16 season, which is not yet completed. Position

SF was mentioned already at Kobe Bryant#Final season (2015–2016). Being that he only played 1/20 seasons there, I wouldn't put it in the lead.—Bagumba (talk) 08:01, 16 April 2016 (UTC)
Although it was one season it was still a position he played in the league in his pro career. I think we should list it as an encyclopedia is supposed ot be as complete and accurate as possible. We've been pretty clear about listing the PRIMARY position in cases where the player is overwhelmingly associated with one role (example - Magic Johnson). Kobe is regarded as one of the best shooting guards in league history and that's what he's known for. Citation overkill

The article needs pruning of unnecessary refs. I know this is a BLP, but 400+ references is excessive for any article. There are several instances of 3 or more citations given to support statements that aren't even contentious. All these refs bog down the article and cause slow page loading times. Infobox highlights

As Bryant is primarily known as a former basketball player, listing the Academy Award in the infobox seems out of place. Moreover, it's not even common for film people like Meryl Streep or Steven Spielberg to list awards in their infobox. Lead sentence

Bryant is primarily known as a former basketball player. Many athletes, both active and retired, have business interests in which they invest, but are not notable for being businessman. This seems to be the current case with Bryant as well. Per MOS:BLPLEAD: "The lead sentence should describe the person as he or she is commonly described in reliable sources." While some articles talk about him outside of basketball, it's not "common" enough to place businessman in the lead sentence. Wrong Picture Caption

In the picture in the "2015/2016 Last Season" article, the caption reads "Bryant defending against LeBron James in James' final Cleveland game". DEATH

Kobe Bryant died Sunday January 26, 2020 in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, TMZ reports. Bryant was reportedly in his private helicopter with three other people when it crashed. Emergency personnel responded when a fire broke out. No one on board the helicopter survived, according to TMZ Sports

Daughters' names

I've removed the names of his children that were added with this edit here per WP:BLPNAMES. For one thing, the edit shouldn't have been marked as a WP:MINOR edit since it certainly is not, but that's not the main reason I removed the content. Even though I think they were added in good faith, the last version of the article before content edits related to Bryant's death started being made doesn't make any mention of any of his children by name. I've briefly searched the talk page archives to see if this has come up before, but didn't find anything; so, I'm assuming for the moment that there was at least a silent consensus not to mention them. I don't know if others noticed it, but Wikipedia was down at around 12pm, when his death was first announced. This is not unusual when someone of global importance passes; a lot of websites crashed when Michael Jackson passed. Can we include this in this article? How can we prove Wikipedia crashed? Looking at the Phabricator, I'm not sure if that ticket actually has anything to do with this. That happened back on the 23 and I think had already been rolled back quickly. The recent problem is tracked in T243713. There was a suggestion it could be related to T243548, but since the update had already been rolled back a few days ago, and I see no suggestion the problems requiring a roll back had already been fixed, I doubt it. There is no real clue of the cause of the problems for T243713 in the ticket itself.

But from this discussion Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Connection Problems - January 26 2020 , I found [1] which makes me think it was an intentional DDoS attack.

Of course that highlights another point (which was actually the main reason I started this reply before I did more research). It's actually perfectly possible, whatever the cause, that there is some relation. If the servers were still recovering from a load spike due to an upgrade then roll back i.e. there was still abnormally high usage, the additional traffic caused by this could have pushed it over the edge. (Admittedly it probably wouldn't generated that much CPU to the backend if that's the problem.) And if there was an intentional DDoS which was still ongoing and perhaps partly migated by shifting traffic around, then a sudden spike from genuine readers would also cause significant problem.

Looking at when editing started here and the timing of the problem report, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a factor although it seems to be 2100 UTC not 1200PM as claimed above. Still, it's irrelevant unless it's well covered in sources. And even if it was, it still probably wouldn't belong in this article but some other one.

I monitored the access problems closely. The problems were worst in Western Europe, and in the U.S., they were most serious in the northeast, in Northern California and in Seattle. The urban areas of the province of Ontario were hit too. Israel was also affected. Much less so in the Los Angeles area. I agree with WWGB in that I don't think any of the other victims, except perhaps Bryant's daughter, need to be or should be mentioned by name in this article. Most of these persons, other than the John Altobelli, are WP:BLP1E/WP:BIO1E types of persons who wouldn't be mentioned solely on their own merits and accomplishments in the form of a stand-alone article written about them. Reliable Reference Sources?

I was reading through the edit history and kept seeing things like: First TMZ was added as the first news source to announce the story. And this was edited into the article. Somebody else would come along and remove TMZ as a source because, in their opinion, it wasn't a credible source. Invariably, somebody else would come along and put TMZ as a source back into the article. And then the same person that first removed it would remove it again. Another person came along and edited in two different sources. These were subsequently removed as well, for being not credible. There needs to be a list here on Wikipedia that specifically names all the credible news sources that are appropriate to use and there needs to be a link to this list on every page. The only problem with that is, who decides which sources are credible or not? For example, last year, NBC was caught using a Photoshopped picture that made the measles outbreak look worse than it actually was. In my opinion, that makes NBC no longer a credible source. If there was a permanent list of credible sources, that would stop some of the endless edit wars. Any opinions on whether an official list of sources is a good idea? Speaking of which, also reading through the history, I saw a lot of edit wars going on and this just ruins the credibility of Wikipedia. One person would use "alongside of," another would change it to "as well as," and then a third person would come along and change it to "including." It's worth noting that the definition of what a "pageview" was changed in July 2015 to, among other things, include mobile views. So assuming the records page is accurate, which is not necessarily a given, it would be ideal to say that it's the biggest single-day spike in pageviews on a Wikipedia article since July 2015.

I agree that it might be better to wait on this until the editing slows down a bit. Not only are there are other related articles which are currently the subjects of move/merge discussions, but with all of the editing being done to this article since the crash there's lots of instability, not only in terms of content but also formatting, etc. One thing I noticed is that there may be some WP:CITEVAR things that might need some cleanup; the citation style might have been a bit inconsistent over the years, but more content and citations being added since the crash might have exacerbated that a bit. Once things slow down, formatting/style stuff can be discussed as needed and things tweaked accordingly if deemed necessary. One other thing I've noticed is the amount of detail in the lead, and I think some of that could be trimmed to be more of a summary of what comes later in the article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:27, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Given the recent interest that this article has attracted and the large number of edit requests which are being made, it might be a good idea to tweak the archiving a bit so as to slow things down. The pace at which posts are being archived is fairly high, which might it turn lead to some redundancy of edit requests and threads being newly started. Daughters' names, continued

There was a comment in that section I didn't get a chance to reply to. I don't understand the issue with posting the names of his daughters, since that information can easily be obtained, and it's even mentioned in many of the news articles linked here. If Wikipedia has a policy about the names of minors, then of course it's advisable to follow those guidelines. But my point is: his daughters' names aren't exactly top secret. Wikipedia is not a newspaper and Wikipedia articles aren't intended to be written as newspaper articles; this is true for not only with respect to WP:TONE, but also with respect to the nature of the content itself. So, just because you can Google information about Bryant's children and find them mentioned by name online somewhere, even in WP:RS, doesn't generally make a good argument in favor for adding such content to this article. My concern about this has to do with WP:BLPNAMES and WP:BLP1E/WP:BIO1E in that Bryant for sure and perhaps his wife to some degree would be considered "public" figures, but that doesn't automatically mean their kids are considered to be as such. It would be different if the kids themselves were being specifically extensively covered by relibale sources in and of there own right or put out their as public figures by their parents; I don't think, however, that's clearly the case and while they might be mentioned by names in the occasional article, it's pretty much only in relation to their parents, in particular Bryant himself. This is a bit of a subjective judgement perhaps, but mentioning the children by name doesn't necessarily improve the reader's understanding of Bryant and non-mentioning them isn't really a significant loss of content. Things are trickier perhaps with respect to Bryant's second daughter since she died in the crash and is now being mentioned pretty much by name in any article about the crash; once again, however, it has to be determined whether mentioning her by name as opposed to just mentioning her as a daughter is better.
Prior to his death, there doesn't appear to have been any mentioning of Bryant's daughters by name; so, I'm assuming that probably is an indication that there was at least a WP:SILENT consensus not do so. The names only seemed to be added after the crash, as more people started editing the article. That could be an indication that a new consensus is being established in favor of mentioning them by name, but I think it would be best to sort that out first here on this talk since it does involve BLPNAMES as well as possible WP:BLPPRIVACY and WP:NPF issues. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:10, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

Posting something on Instagram is not really the same as being in the public domain, but the fact that she's decided to make her daughters' names public is worth consideration. Whether she did that as a natural part of her grieving process or whether she now considers her kids to be public figures only she can really say, but again all we can do is assess how relevant their names are to the reader's understanding of this part of Bryant's life. Anyway, this article is currently being heavily edited by lots of different editors for obvious reasons; I've got no reason to believe that these edits aren't being made in good faith, but I also think most people doing the editing aren't really bothering to check the talk page first. Just because some content is added, however, doesn't mean that it should've been added, particularly when it's content has been previously removed and is currently being discussed. Article lead

I briefly mentioned this above in #Good article?, but it might be a good idea to discuss the content of the MOS:LEAD and see if there are ways to improve it. The lead should really be just a summary of the main points of the article and although these don't have to be single sentence bullet points per se, it's also not necessary to go into too much detail. The lead should only refer to content which comes later in the article, which this one seems to do, but it doesn't necessary need to be a specific with respect to what comes later or what's found in other related articles. This lead in particular appears to be a little too detailed in my opinion and a fair amount of it probably could be trimmed and tightened up a bit. It makes sense to mention Bryant's basketball career obviously, but not necessary not in so much detail especially since the infobox for this article is so extensive and compliments the lead with respect to that content. At the same time, it also makes sense to include content from other parts of the article like the sexual assault/rape allegations, his death and the world's reaction to it, his business ventures, etc., but again not necessarily in so much detail. A balance should be sought between all of these things, and good faith should be assumed when attempts are made at improvement instead of accusing others of white washing, etc. Bad faith assumptions and WP:ASPERSION like statements and edit summaries regarding others is a quick way to turn the article into a WP:BATTLEGROUND and WP:USTHEM; it would be much better to look at the current lead and determine (1) if it's already the best it can be and then (2) how to improve it if it's not. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:58, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

If entire paragraphs in the lead are dedicated to obscure (to non-sports fans) records and stats, then an appropriate amount of space can be dedicated to the assault allegations. This is not a sports fan website, and we are required per WP:NPOV to provide a summary of the subject in their entirety. The allegations even have their own spin-off article. If you'll notice, many of the sources writing obituaries reference a "complicated" legacy.[5][6] What do you think this is in reference to exactly? The sexual assault allegations. Kobe Bryant is a popular sports figure to many. But the sexual assault allegation was international news and continued to be a controversial piece of baggage in his public profile until the end of his life, and still is. I'm not totally disagreeing with you, but at the same time there's no need to accuse everyone who seems to be trying to improve things of "whitewashing", etc.; that's not helpful at all. Of these additions to the lead about the rape case:

  • The occupation and age of the accuser seem trivial here when she is not a public figure. If the age remains, Bryant's age at the time should be mentioned too, to avoid misconception that there was a huge disparity.
  • The impact to his public image from one incident is undue when there is no general overview of his popularity in the lead.
  • The accuser not testifying seems like a detail of the trial that can be left for the body, while the outcomes of the criminal and civil trials are the main points. Mentioning it opens up NPOV issues of why she refused (false charges, victim shaming, etc).

"Death" section

Is the death section intended to be just specifically about the cirmcumstances directly related to the accident/Bryant's death, or is it also intended to include content related to his legacy or how others have reacted/responded to his death? It might be a good idea to establish what the scope of this section should be or whether a separate sub-section should be established within the "Death" section to better accommodate things like the memorials, tributes, etc. that are bound to occur as time passes. Maybe a more general "Legacy" section could be created to cover not only Bryant's basketball legacy, but also things related to his other activities as well as the response to his death. Maybe something along the lines of Prince (musician)#Remembrances could be a way to incorporate such content. If there's a "Death of Kobe Bryant" article eventually created/split off then such content would most likely be better off there like is done in articles like Death of Michael Jackson, Death of David Bowie, etc., but right now people are most likely going to continue to add this content to this "Death" section as long as that seems like the only place such content fits in the article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:28, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Mentioning date of death and age at time of death in the lead

I don't really think this is an improvement, but am going to refrain from reverting back so as to see what others think. Personally, I'm not so sure Bryant's age when he died is something that absolutely needs to be mentioned in the lead. There are lots of articles, including some about people at least as well-known as Bryant, where the subject's age when they died isn't mentioned in the lead: Michael Jackson and John Lennon are two examples of this, but there are more as well. All articles are not required to be written exactly the same way, and if the consensus is to include Bryant's age and the date he died, then so be it. I do think though that there has to be a better way of doing so since the most recent version with a separate sentence "He was 41." sounds like something you'd hear att he end of a a news report about Bryant or read in a memorial-type article about him. First name usage

Generally per WP:SURNAME, Wikipedia only refers to individuals by the full name once in the lead of the article and then perhaps once at the first mention in the body of the article. Referring to a person by their first name only is typically deemed to be too familiar/informal style of writing for Wikipedia, and is usually only done when necessary to avoid confession (as in the case of family members). In this article, it seems best to refer to Kobe as Bryant whenever possible, and then his daughter Gianna either as "Gianna" or "his daughter". It doesn't really seem like a good idea to refer to Kobe by his given name (except when part of a direct quote) or Gianna by her family name. I've been tweaking this kind of thing as I come across it, but if others feel differently then maybe it would a good idea to establish some consensus about it for future reference. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:47, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Lead language re: death

I've been reverted on this so I'm going to raise the issue here. The lead currently says Bryant "died" in a helicopter crash. Obviously, this isn't wrong, but isn't it appropriate to say he was "killed?" I think "died" is usually used in reference to death by natural causes or something else that was passive.

Second, I believe that it might be appropriate to note his burial in SoCal in a sentence immediately following description of the crash. This has been widely reported, and seems an appropriate conclusion. It may also be appropriate to note any investigation or, perhaps later on, some subsequent finding regarding the cause of the crash (if there is one). Thoughts? Air traffic

There appears to be a contradiction. "Due to light rain and fog that morning, the LAPD helicopters[470] and most other air traffic were grounded.[473] The flight tracker showed that the helicopter circled above the L.A. Zoo due to heavy air traffic in the area". So, even though "the LAPD helicopters and most other air traffic were grounded", there was still a "heavy air traffic". Which one it was? I agree that this sounds contradictory. Sources that I have read mention that only LAPD helicopters were grounded. Bryant's helicopter maintained a holding pattern above the L.A. Zoo due to air traffic at the Hollywood Burbank Airport and Van Nuys Airport. I propose the sentence be changed to: "Due to light rain and fog that morning, the LAPD helicopters were grounded. The flight tracker showed that the helicopter circled above the L.A. Zoo in a holding pattern due to air traffic at the nearby Hollywood Burbank Airport and Van Nuys Airport."

Under paragraph "Basketball Legacy", change the last sentence to:

"Following his death, on February 15, 2020 in callabasses Calofornia Kobe and 9 people included in the crash commissioner Adam Silver announced that the NBA All-Star Game MVP Award would be renamed to the NBA All-Star Game Kobe Bryant MVP Award in honor of Bryant."

This retains the abbreviation "MVP" which is in the official name of the award and makes the sentence a little easier to read.

I swapped with the 2014 image to see the reaction. The only previous dissenter was a since blocked sock. This had been the longtime lead image until being swapped out in May 2016. "maintain" v. "belief"

Hello, I'm merely pondering as to why "maintain" is the word used in the lead when describing Bryant's response to the sexual assault allegation. Reading his apology it seems like "belief" might be a better word. Because in the way I read and understand his statement, he apologizes and accepts that she sees in differently than he does.

He wrote, "Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did".

My opinion is that the sentence in the lead should say be:

  • "Bryant issuing a public apology and admitting to a sexual encounter he believed to be consensual"

Which is separate from what it is now which is:

  • "Bryant issuing a public apology and admitting to a sexual encounter he maintained was consensual".

I'm saying this because from my understanding of my statement, he accepts her version of the events saying despite his belief that it was consensual he recognizes she did not. The One I Left (talk) 14:06, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

My concern is that "he believed to be consensual" can be misinterpreted to mean that after his apology, he no longer believed it to be consensual. However, that would be inaccurate.
