Redlists and references[edit]

Lugnuts - could you comment on this topic, specifically the redlist Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by identifier/SR. It looks like you are active on the talk page there. Thank you! best, WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 22:52, 19 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi! Yes, I can help here. Just a note that Sports Reference was decommissioned about a year ago, and all their data moved over to the Olympedia website. Don't worry about the references to SR at the missing articles page, I tweaked the code about a year ago to look at the Olympedia ID in WikiData. Olympedia is an excellent resource - I can't say enough good things about the people who run the site. The major benefit over SR, is that Olympedia is a living, breathing site, with content being updated all the time. The other thing it includes is ALL Olympians, including those who did not start an Olympic event, and people who took part in the Youth Olympics too. Now taking part in the Youth Olympics does not automatically equate to notability on WP. So if you look at the missing athletes page and click on the Olympedia ID for Abigail Vieira (3rd name down), you'll see she took part at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics. She might be notable for other (sporting) achievements, and may compete at the full Olympics in the future.
Moving on to the arts competitions. I went through the much-overlooked Art competitions at the Summer Olympics articles and completed lists and stubs for all missing artists about a year ago, such as the 1936 games. The even better news was that I tagged all the women artists with the WikiProject Women talk-page tag, as well as the category for Olympic competitors in art competitions. You can get the full list of these people via this Petscan query.
I think/hope that answers any questions here. Feel free to ping me or drop a note on my talkpage if you need any more info. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 08:00, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Lugnuts! I really appreciate your clarifications. I have moved the conversation to the talk page of "Women in Olympic & Paralympic Games". Hope you stop by during the edit-a-thon running from July through September. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:59, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much Lugnuts! So is this to say that the “SR” redlist now pulls from Olympedia? Perhaps it makes sense to rename it? At min it sounds like it is indeed just a list of Olympians (even if minor ones as you point out) so I will update the description to avoid reiterating this question in the future! Thank you again! Innisfree987 (talk) 21:32, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! Olympedia is the new site for the old Sports Reference (SR) page. It's run by the same people, in effect a re-branding. I'll tidy up some of the terminology. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:08, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the explenation Lugnuts and your works . I added the information about the artists on the page. Besides of that, it might be hard for less-experienced users to find red-linked Olympians (as you said many at the missing page are Youth Olympians; and it's not listing all the missing articles). So I listed all the missing women Olympians on the page (also started with adding references). A long list, but I think it's complete. It's mainly softball players, rhythmic gymnast and (beach) volleyball players. Would be great if the list can be a lot shorter after these 3 months ;) SportsOlympic (talk) 12:03, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No problem - and thank you for listing the missing articles. I was 99& sure I'd reached the end of the missing Olympian lists some time ago, but looks like I was wrong! Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 12:07, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Lugnuts:, Haha, sorry there are more Olympians than expected ;) But I also think Olympedia has many good updates and more complete information. For instance, as you said you created all the artist, there is for instance Mariya Princess Nizharadze at Olympedia see here with a lot of info. Thanks for starting creating already many of them! As you listed yourself as a participant of the project, I added your created articles to the "New or upgraded articles", I hope you don't mind. SportsOlympic (talk) 13:28, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's great - thanks for doing that. Olympedia is updated all the time, so there's a good chance that at the time of creating the artists, they had bios at the time that just had a name, and nothing more. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 14:05, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Lugnuts: thanks for creating so many softball players and beach volleyball players articles! Thanks for all the work. And just FYI, I updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Olympics and Paralympics and created sections with missing Olympians: 1) who competed; 2) were non-starters and 3) competitors at demonstration event. (but please don't shoot if I made an error somewhere ;) ). Happy day SportsOlympic (talk) 14:26, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, I wont! Thanks for creating the sections. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 14:35, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New Zealand Olympic rowers[edit]

Hannah Osborne in 2018

This year, New Zealand is sending 34 rowers to Tokyo; 20 of whom are women (our lady rowers rock!). I won't bore you with the back story but I've managed to recruit a photographer who is deeply into competitive rowing to Commons, and she has a stunning portfolio of all our Olympic rowers. She started uploading today; just a taster of two photos yet. I've seen her portfolio and it is superb. If any of you work on Commons, feel free to give her a welcome at Vera Bucsu. The contact came about because I wrote a bio for Hannah Osborne, which is nominated at DYK. It was suggested to me that I let you know about this. Schwede66 10:31, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Schwede66, good idea; I see she’s already encountered some difficulties there. I said hello and thank you for the work—thanks also to you for all your facilitation! Innisfree987 (talk) 20:13, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Innisfree987. Running into trouble is inevitable when you are new to Commons. There is, for example, that practice amongst rowing photographers to share photos with one another to "use them as your own" because you can only be in one spot at any one time. That's all good until somebody else's name shows up in the metadata. Oops. But anyway, was chatting to Vera (the photographer) yesterday and given the storm in Tokyo, there's no rowing today. So she wants to upload a few more photos. Oh, did I mention that she is in Tokyo to photograph the rowing? Schwede66 20:19, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Schwede66, oh wow—rare access, to be there in person this year! Just terrific she’s willing to share some of her work with the Commons. Hopefully she doesn’t get knocked around too much as she learns the system. Innisfree987 (talk) 20:26, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to protect her as much as possible, for example here. Schwede66 21:01, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Bless you for it—I noticed that just now and immediately a wave of exhaustion hit, ha. Hopefully becoming a known quantity diminishes those issues for her. Innisfree987 (talk) 21:23, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Meherbai Tata[edit]

Meherbai Tata, looks unimportant as a non-starter tennis player at the 1924 Olympics, appears to be very notable. I found she was the wife of Dorabji Tata (article includes information about her), main keyperson of the Tata Group. She was an successfull feminist, making her strong among others for education for women. See here a biography of her in English. I think a great match with this project! So if you can't decide yet which article to start writing... SportsOlympic (talk) 11:49, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Stubs[edit]

Should we split the Outcomes (articles) into stubs and non-stubs? There's a lot of articles listed already, and it'd be good to know which ones are stubs (that could potentially be improved further) and which are start or higher class articles. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:37, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Joseph2302 We have been separating the stubs from the non-stubs in the "contests", but this editathon (ironically!) isn't a competition, so there aren't any qualifications for listings in the "Outcomes" section. In this case I think not, but that is just one person's opinion. Perhaps if you are creating some entries that are stubs you could mark them as such and see if others follow? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 15:25, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That seems like a good strategy for this year. I did think perhaps next year (assuming the Winter Olympics is held?) we could make this a contest—indeed it would be in keeping with the theme! And incentivize more fleshed out articles. Innisfree987 (talk) 20:19, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh! I should have kept reading: there’s a contest this year! Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Meetup/204#Wiki_Loves_Sport_2021. So Joseph2302 you can add work there and it gives credit for more substantial pieces. I wonder if we should make this more widely know. WomenArtistUpdates, do you think we should add it to the instructions? We could use the same model as for the CEE countries and the Interwiki Women collab. Innisfree987 (talk) 20:30, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sure Innisfree987! Happy to. But I can't quite find the Wiki loves Sports contest page. Don't know if my brain is in weekend mode. The link above does a circular thing back to this page.

Qualification for the 2020 Summer Olympics[edit]

Hi. All the qualification info for each event can be found in the following template:

Note that simply qualifying for the Olympics does not equate to meeting our notability standards. However, many of the qualifiers should meet some sort of WP:GNG with national records, titles, medals at other events, and other coverage. If you are unsure if someone is notable, happy to take a look. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 14:46, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Olympia list[edit]

Does someone know how to update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by identifier/Olympedia? When trying to, I get an error. SportsOlympic (talk) 14:26, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also getting a memory error, which is probably because it's too long for the bot to handle? Or maybe the bot is confused because it was moved a few days ago (and hasn't worked since? Joseph2302 (talk) 14:31, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The list updating has been hit and miss of late. Probably something has changed server-side to stop the bot updating it. Note that the male list (in my sandbox) is about five times as large, and had no problem being updated until recently. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 14:37, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like there was a thread about it: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red#Workaround to ListeriaBot crashes, which suggested removing some of the columns and thus the complexity of the query. Joseph2302 (talk) 15:12, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
At the moment I removed 4 columns see here; but still the same issue. Strange, because the list isn’t that long? SportsOlympic (talk) 15:56, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for this head’s up Camelia.boban! WomenArtistUpdates just added the information to our event page so hopefully some of our participants will join! Innisfree987 (talk) 20:56, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm working my way through making pages for female Paralympic athletes at the upcoming 2020 Summer Paralympics. The hardest one is para-badminton because it's a relatively new sport and there are very few para-badminton players pages on Wikipedia. SarahTHunter (talk) 13:52, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Minor question[edit]

Hi there. What does it mean for an article to be "upgraded?" Does it mean an article was improved from one quality level to another (for example, stub to start or start to C) or does it mean that an article was simply expanded? Yinglong999 (talk) 02:59, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yinglong999, I think everyone applies their own personal threshold and that’s just fine! ORES might not recognize a really good copyedit but in my eyes that could definitely upgrade an article. However you see fit! Innisfree987 (talk) 04:03, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Innisfree987 Thank you! Yinglong999 (talk) 04:05, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

2021 Summer Paralympics images[edit]

At Commons there are just a few images of the 2021 Summer Paralympics. Here at Commons I listed free galleries with images, if people want to uploud images of the Paralympics. Thanks, SportsOlympic (talk) 11:17, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
