Propose merging Template:Samata Party/meta/color with Template:Samta Party/meta/color.
The two templates are redundant, and we should use the Samta spelling as that is the spelling used on the article. YttriumShrew (talk) 22:48, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: I think this merge proposal may be in the wrong direction. All of the sources linked from Samta Party, including an Indian government official election results pdf (archived version of reference 11), refer to the party as the "Samata Party", not the "Samta Party". The article should probably be moved to the former name, and "Samta" should be redirected to "Samata" in both cases. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:43, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Propose merging Template:Infobox National Hockey League coach with Template:Infobox ice hockey player.
Per previous discussions at WT:HOCKEY, including here and here, it seems generally agreed upon that this infobox is unnecessarily cluttered and redundant, and a more concise solution might be to include optional coaching/management fields into Template:Infobox ice hockey player, similar (but not exactly) like the equivalent templates for NFL, college players and MLB players. Listing here to generate some further discussion towards a workable solution. Connormah (talk) 16:36, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge per nomination. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 20:50, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Unless a coach was a player previous, that makes sense because of the name of the infobox. If the coach was never a player, it seems redundant. If it does get mergedm a slight renaming of the infobox would be beneficial. But that makes the task of switching the name of the infobox to the new name in each player article tedious. It could or maybe would also make switching infoboxes in coach articles tedious. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 04:42, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I believe there are (possibly) bots and WP:AWB to take care of any cleanup afterwards; there have been no doubt larger or more drastic merges than this one, I believe, and I don't think renaming will have any widespread effect if a redirect remains. Every single current NHL coach and/or GM (I can maybe think of 2 managers off the top of my head who are not) are former players, so not sure that will be an issue either. Connormah (talk) 08:08, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To further the previous point, I believe Ken Hitchcock falls into that category. If the pages are merged there will probably need to be a small adjustment made, such as not displaying a playing career in the infobox if no information is entered into the fields. So long as pages like that one aren't harmed by a merge I can't see anything else that would be an obstacle. PensRule11385 (talk) 23:08, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
PensRule11385 - Yes, I think there are few enough cases like Hitchcock (Herb Brooks, Roger Neilson and Pat Burns are other notable ones) that it shouldn't be a problem to manually clean those up. Connormah (talk) 21:08, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have done a mockup at Template:Infobox ice hockey player/testcases#Coach. (it is the middle one). It takes into account if they were players or not and merges in all the information we said we wanted from the previous discussions. It can always be updated and tweaked more going forward. But I think it looks pretty good and matches the look we already have for the current player infobox. Feel free to comment over at WT:HOCKEY if you have any other ides for how it should look so we don't clutter up this discussion with non-merge related discussion. There are less than 250 pages using the coach template at the moment so moving them all manually wouldn't be too hard and I can take care of it easy enough. -DJSasso (talk) 13:12, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge. I always wondered why there are two separate infoboxes for that when Template:Infobox basketball biography and other mentioned infoboxes combine both playing and head coaching stints (I believe baseball infobox also combines executive stints). – Sabbatino (talk) 19:40, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think it was a remnant from the very early days of Wikipedia where we said that player boxes should be used if they were players as that was the source of their initial notability and then non-players should just use the person infobox or no infobox. And one day someone created a coach one without it ever being discussed at the hockey project where we likely would have just expanded the current one to include coaches. But once one was created I think inertia set in and we just kept using it. -DJSasso (talk) 13:20, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was soft delete. Based on minimal participation, this uncontroversial nomination is treated as an expired PROD (a.k.a. "soft deletion"). Editors can request the template's undeletion. Basically, if this turns out to be used for something and it's not just an overlooked old template, then there's no issue with a refund. Primefac (talk) 13:47, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This template seems to have been created for a non-existent OTRS process. The idea was that if you were tagging an image as {{OTRS received}}, but didn't know the ticket number, you could use this as a placeholder.

But that is not the correct process - only OTRS volunteers should be tagging images with {{OTRS received}} or another similar template, and they will know the correct ticket number.

So this template is for an incorrect process and thus should be deleted.

@Gonnym: That would work, yes, but it means that you would be putting all of that code directly on the DYK nomination page. This would inevitably lead to users deleting the error message but not the category (or vice versa) when they try to clean things up. Having a layer of indirection via the template makes things simpler on the nomination page, which means less chance of user error. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 06:40, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. So the template isn't substituted like you mentioned before but actually transcluded when the error happens. That's a different scenario now. If the module just added the error category then a user cannot remove the category without fixing the error. They can't also fix the error and leave the category as that is automatically applied. However, I guess if you want to have the template "in your face" then that's also a system that can work. Gonnym (talk) 09:44, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, yes, I should have worded that more clearly. It is {{NewDYKnomination}} that is substituted, not {{DYK error}} itself. By "in your face" I assume you mean that it displays an error message? I think this is generally a good idea, as it prods editors creating a DYK nomination to fix their own mistakes with the template syntax, rather than leaving it to other editors to monitor the error category. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 11:39, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete per Gonnym; it is perfectly reasonable to have modules putting things in categories without using a template as an extra layer of redirection. User:GKFXtalk 19:38, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GKFX: If Module:NewDYKnomination were being transcluded, I would wholeheartedly agree with this statement, and in such a case I would likely have not created {{DYK error}}. When transcluding a module, the most natural thing to do is to include the category directly inside the module code. However, Module:NewDYKnomination is not transcluded, but substituted, which means that some kind of wikitext necessarily needs to end up on the DYK nomination page. To add an error category, the choice is basically between putting the category directly on the nomination page ({{error|Some error message}}[[Category:Some error category]]) or the current strategy of putting the category in a template and putting the template on the nomination page ({{DYK error|Some error message}}). I chose the latter approach because then it is less likely for users to delete only the error message but keep the category, which in turn makes cleaning up these errors easier for editors who monitor the error category. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 07:22, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
