I need some serious help

I need some serious help. User:Sadman Sakibzz is continuously removing AfD templates from several articles. Please I request you to intervene and help. Tamravidhir (talk!) 12:09, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

He hasn't done anything since your final warning; I've left an additional warning at the bottom of his page just in case. However, mass-nominating another editor's work for deletion is rather bitey; I sincerely hope that you're doing proper checks on these articles before nominating them. What I found while patrolling them was that they were not referenced at all and even non-notable. I know that it can be bitey but I am just doing what Wikipedia tells me to do. If something is unreferenced and non-notable then that should be considered for deletion and then as per the consensus, it is deleted or kept. And what will happen if suddenly after 15 years it is found that it was a hoax and reports are published in newspapers talking about it. Some are articles on real topics, but they have no reliable sources. This is the reason why I have nominated them at AfD. I have no personal grudge against him. I don't think you've done anything wrong; I just wanted to make sure that you were doing the necessary WP:BEFORE checks and fixing the articles instead of deleting them if that was an option. For what it's worth, I've checked several of them and agree that there aren't enough sources available to make them worth keeping. It might, however, be a good idea to leave this editor a note explaining (nicely!) why you are putting all of their pages up for deletion, in the hopes that they can improve their submissions in the future. I would have done that if Twinkle wouldn't have been there. At times I get too rude but the Twinkle messages make the other feel that "he/she is bad". It's automated I didn't put them. @Tamravidhir: Some of the images uploaded by User:Sadman Sakibzz might be in Public Domain in India. "According to The Indian Copyright Act, 1957" (PDF). (Chapter V Section 25), Anonymous works, photographs, cinematographic works, sound recordings, government works, and works of corporate authorship or of international organizations enter the public domain 60 years after the date on which they were first published, counted from the beginning of the following calendar year (ie. as of 2014, works published prior to 1 January 1954 are considered public domain). Posthumous works (other than those above) enter the public domain after 60 years from publication date. Any other kind of work enters the public domain 60 years after the author's death. Text of laws, judicial opinions, and other government reports are free from copyright. Photographs created before 1958 are in the public domain 50 years after creation, as per the Copyright Act 1911. But the pic from the song Piya Tose Naina Laage Re is from the 1965 film Guide, while Aaiyen Meherbaan is from a 1958 film and the rest are from from films made in much later decades. While you never know but the two pics of those persons may be copyrighted just that the source is not there so you don't know from where they have been taken. Haven't done algebra since I was in school, I'm afraid, and that was... well, quite a while ago now. My kids aren't yet old enough to be faffing about with quadratic equations and whatnot, so I haven't had any need to refresh my knowledge recently either. Different countries have different possible maximum GPAs (although I've only heard of 4 and 5 as maximums...), and most countries do not have GPAs at all. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 19:51, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
@Amanda Smalls: In India it's only the CBSE board which follows GPA and CGPA but then also not all the CBSE schools. Some (which follow the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) format) do while others don't. My school followed the CCE format so we had it. Hey Yunshui. So, we're at a stage in the building our mentorship space, the Co-op where we're seeking volunteers to help mentor one or two editors during our pilot planned for December. As we laid out in our proposal, we are endeavoring to ensure that actual mentorships are well-defined in the sense that they are focused on a specific topic for teaching (rather than it being comprehensive), and have a definite end. Sure, let me elaborate on those briefly:
Timeframe: We're hoping to begin our pilot in December. However, due to difficulties we've had in hiring necessary contractors for design and programming, this may need to be pushed back to January. The pilot itself will run for two months, where we hope to have around 50 editors go through mentorship for any purpose.
Mentorship structure: Learners (i.e. newer editors) will be specifying why they want a mentor using a profile structure, and using information from their profile, we will be making automatic matches to mentor profiles based on what the mentor is willing and able to teach. The actual teaching is something we leave up to the mentor's discretion. However, we are planning to implement a resource center for mentors to contribute to and draw upon for how to go about teaching different topics. Mentors who have been invited for the pilot, however, have all had a strong track record with working with new editors.
Best practices: We are planning to have a conversation with mentors about such expectations, likely to take place on a TBD subpage of WP:Co-op. I have some proposals, but I'd like the mentors to decide what practices for maintaining the space and working with editors work best for them. One problem we would need to figure out, for instance, is how best to ensure that we do not have editors waiting too long for a mentor.

Wikipedia isn't a newspaper. If you read something in the news, it may be a suitable topic for Wikipedia, but Wikipedia has a whole bunch of additional policies governing whether we can have an article on something. The statements that you made in your article were unsourced and, if untrue, would constitute libel. Wikipedia requires references to reliable sources to support any information added - it's not optional, especially if you are writing about a living person. We have very strict rules where biographies of living people are concerned: basically, your references need to be rock-solid before you say anything detrimental to a living person's character.
If you'd like to carry on working on Wikipedia I suggest you start by reading this page and then perhaps take the tutorial. However, make sure you read the Biographies of living persons policy before you try writing another article. Yunshui 雲水 15:49, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

It shouldn't be. We do have a criterion for speedily deleting articles by users who are evading a block or ban, but that criterion (G5) specifically disallows deletion if other editors have done substantial work on the article (which you clearly have). Needed a 3O

Yunshui, do you remember when I wrote to you for the first time you had told that if I need a 3O then you will always help me? So, today I need a 3O. Well so far there has not been any conflict of interests but there have innumerable time when I have had bad days with this editor. And if to say, I still have a record, he has been extremely rude to me. And such preposterous behaviour forced me to take a Wikibreak as no one, whom I knew, was willing to help me. But I won't instigate violence against him but TheRedPenOfDoom has always made such edits and is still making such edits to Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. I don't know why but he has removed reliable sources and certain edits made by me to resolve issues pointed by other editors on the talk page so that it is capable of becoming a GA. Now, there was a time when he had said me that online articles published by newspapers aren't reliable source. I mean that suppose there's a newspaper called The Day which publishes an article titled The Crime. So the Day has a website called theday.com. So now, they publish the same article online. So TheRedPenOfDoom said that such sources aren't reliable. And I had a hard time explaining him. Please I want you to help me before this gets bad again. I just want you to look at this and say whether I have done anything wrong reverting his edits and restoring a previous version. Please help me Yunshui. Hi Tamravidhir. There is some degree of merit in User:TheRedPenOfDoom's version of the article. To go through line by line from the diff you posted above:
  • Hindi title: per Wikipedia:WikiProject_India#Indic_scripts_in_lead, that shouldn't be there.
  • "receiving" vs. "bagging": "Bagging" is a very informal term in British English, so "receiving" is much more appropriate here.
  • Kehta Hai Dil Jee Le Zara integration episode: I know I've suggested before that Tellychakkar might be reliable source, but it's certainly not a cast-iron one. I think, based on the fact that it appears to have a professional editorial staff, that it meets the criteria; others may disagree. Certainly it has the look of tabloid journalism, which shouldn't be used as the sole source for information in articles that are covered by BLP (which this one, since it deals with the professional activities of a number of living people, falls under).
  • Ram Kapoor's weight: describing someone as overweight is not neutral, nor is it appropriate under the BLP policy. TRPoD's version of this sentence is preferable.
  • Pull quotes: per WP:QUOTEFARM, a paraphrase is generally preferable to repeated quotations. I tend to agree with TRPoD's version here as well, though this is primarily down to personal preference rather than any specific policy statement.
  • Ratings: again, this comes down to whether or not Tellychakkar is a reliable source. I recommend that you discuss this specific source with TRPoD on the article talkpage, to find out what his objections are - they may be perfectly valid.
  • External links: neither of these contains any information that improves the reader's understanding of the topic - per the external links policy, they therefore aren't necessary.
Overall, then, I'd say TRPoD's version of the article is closer to what a Good Article should look like. It's worth bearing in mind that someone with nearly 10,000 edits who's been here longer than I have might just know what he's doing... I'd suggest that you try working with him rather than against him; you'll end up with a better article that way. Yunshui 雲水 11:47, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

3O Needed

Now I want some serious help from you. A very crucial 3O. Even after having enough reliable sources (references to nespapares, no tellychakkar) TheRedPenOfDoom is making false allegations on Everest (Indian TV series). I don't understand if he enjoys destroying things or he has a grudge against me! But he is asinine! Sorry I don't assume to good faith but some people get on your nerves at a time so much that you need to vomit out everything! Please have a look at this and give your opinion! I hope this time I'm right as i don't see anything wrong in it. I kept in mind everything to make sure that at least this article is not potential to any removal and has no loopholes. He's got a reasonably valid point; you do have a propensity for extensive direct quotations, which isn't terribly encyclopedic. Remember how we prefer secondary and tertiary sources for information? The same tends to hold true for quotations - excessive quotations from primary sources (which Gowariker most certainly is) are liable to skew the perspective of the article away from neutral exposition of the subject. Have you tried talking to TRPoD about this (templated uw-vandal warnings don't really count as discussion...)? Yunshui 雲水 12:41, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Well, really you need to ask two questions when adding a quotation. The first is: "Does this improve the reader's understanding?" So, for example, take the quotation, "Be it before a film or TV, the anxiety is the same..." Is the reader's knowledge of Everest increased by knowing that Gowariker considers himself to be his own emotional anchor, but that he still fears rejection of his work? I'd say not - I certainly haven't learned anything about the TV series from that statement.
The second question is, "Is a quotation necessary?" Usually, the answer is no - Wikipedia isn't a magazine, and we aren't particularly interested in representing people in their own words. As an example, take the paragraph beginning: It has been reported that Everest led to a delay in the film Mohenjo Daro.... Is the sense of the information changed at all by replacing the last sentence (including the quotation) with "Gowariker later confirmed this."? I'd argue that it isn't - the quote is used to give his confirmation, but the reader doesn't need to know the exact phrasing he used, just that the statement about his other film being postponed was confirmed. If you can replace your quotations with a prose statement, you probably don't need a quotation in the first place.
Examples of instances where a quotation would be better than prose include: when the statement is indicative of a bias that would not be suitable in the text of the article (e.g. Hitler said, "the National Socialist movement will go on for 1,000 years!" is preferable to The Nazi movement will continue for a millenium.<ref>Hitler</ref>) or when the quotation itself is the subject of comment or a unique creative expression (e.g. Shakespeare once wrote, "All the world's a stage..."). However, generally speaking we want to avoid giving precedence to one point of view - your Everest article is filled with comments from the people who were involved with the film, but where are the quotations from its critics, or from people who were adversely affected by the filming? It's therefore almost always a good idea to avoid direct quotes in articles, and especially so if they are from someone who has a vested interest in the article's subject - it's COI by the back door. Antakya Belediyespor

Hi, Antakya Belediyespor changed its name to Hatay Büyükşehir Belediyespor. The main article should be Hatay Büyükşehir Belediyesi (women's basketball) since Hatay Büyükşehir Belediyespor is a sport club with more than one sport branch. Have you got a reference for that? I generally don't move articles without some evidence that the title is genuinely incorrect, and there are no links in the article (the offical website link gives me a 404 error) to indicate what the correct name might be. Yunshui 雲水 08:46, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Stradbroke Page

Thanks for helping with the issues with the Stradbroke article but I think you have slightly mis-understood what is happening. There only are two websites in Stradbroke:

1. The site that I have run for ten years Stradbroke Village Website 2. New site called Stradbroke Online

You mention you have removed links to both sites but actually a link to Stradbroke Info remains and it was me that tagged this as the official Parish Council site, in fact the editors of the site as you can see from the deleted talk page article claim this is also a private site. This all represents an ongoing off-wiki dispute and I would suggest to be fair either (a) both links are removed, or (b) a single link to Stradbroke Village Website is added back

I am not going to try and edit this and respect what you have done but as things stand the users who created multiple accounts have got what they wanted which was all links other than to their own site deleted. This doesn't seem fair. Can you let me know what you think Jehargrave (talk) 15:16, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Apologies this dispute involves the parish council and the people involved are parish councillors (myself included) The sites http://stradbroke.info and http://stradbrokeonline.org.uk are the same website. There is an ongoing dispute about the site but the position of the site editors of Stradbroke Online/Info is that theirs is a private site. The Council doesn't really have a website of its own as such but keeps voting to try and support Stradbroke Online. Given the circumstances perhaps links to both should be removed?

Hi there. Unfortunately as soon as the page protection expired puppets using IP address wikipedia accounts came along and added back the links to http://stradbrokeonline.org.uk. This time describing it as Stradbroke's village website, a name our site has 10 years established goodwill using. Vandalism training

Hello Yunshui. I am chiefly active in article creation, expansion and review, but intend to try and widen my experience on Wikipedia. My current activities in fighting vandalism are limited to responding to changes to articles on my extensive watchlist and occasionally leaving warnings on the talk page of disruptive individuals. RE: November 2014

Hello there, Yunshui. Recently, I was (wrongly) blocked under the username of Mystical545 because of "vandalism" and because my account "appeared to be compromised."

I would like to state that that vandalism really was caused by my little brother and not me, only because I was careless enough to leave my account logged in for a while. If I really was a vandal, I wouldn't have made some good edits first and then vandalize a page all of a sudden. Instead, I would have caused vandalism the day I joined Wikipedia. It just wouldn't make any sense. My aim on Wikipedia is/was to help wherever I can, which I tried my best to do until it was all ruined by just one bad edit that wasn't even done by me.

To further support my innocence, I would like to say that I am not abusing multiple accounts as you said so - the fact that my brother repeated the same vandalism on a recently protected page has nothing to do with anything. I believe it was just a coincidence, judging by the fact that he is a massive football fan and told me that his mischievous action was inspired by "The SPORT Bible", a popular page on Facebook which recently showcased one of the earlier vandalized editions of the "Kolo Touré" page (and he wasn't lying).

So, I followed the advice stated on the "Compromised accounts" section of the "Guide to appealing blocks" guide page. And I truly hope that you believe me and give me another chance on Wikipedia now that I've started afresh, that too with a password stronger than ever. And I can guarantee that I'll never repeat the same carelessness ever again. Also, I'd appreciate it very much if I could get my old account back - although it doesn't really matter because all I want is a second chance - but that's entirely upto you guys.

There's certainly no issue with your return under a new username, and I can accept your explanation for what happened. I don't really have any serious objection to you getting your old account back, either. However, I'm not too happy about unblocking an account which is known to have been compromised off my own bat; if you want to return to your old username I suggest you file an unblock request in the usual way on your old talkpage, so that another administrator can review it. In the unblock request, make sure you mention and link to your new account, and feel free to link to this conversation so that the reviewing admin can see I'm happy for them to go ahead with an unblock if they see fit. A query

Yunshui I have one query. As far as I know copying images from other sites and uploading them to Wikipedia is termed as copyright violation then why images copied from sites such as Flickr and Bollywood Hungama (such as this and this) allowed on Wikipedia. The sites/owners are properly mentioned and credited on such file page but if we do the same with images copied from other sites then I have seen such images still being deleted. I don't have a lot to add to De728631's very accurate answer, except that I can view the OTRS permission for Bollywood Hungama images and can confirm that they have agreed to release images taken by their own photographers under a CC-BY-SA licence. As De728631 points out, we can use images from other sites as long as they comply with Wikipedia's own licence; if something's available under CC-BY-SA or in the public domain, it's okay for Wikipedia to use it. Shane Dunphy Page Deleted

Hi Yunshui,

My name is Shane Dunphy, and, although I did not create the Wikipedia page about my books and journalism (I am an author of non-fiction books that have done quite well in Ireland and the UK, some have been Number 1 bestsellers), I did end up using it as a sort of unofficial reference page for people. I do not use Facebook or Twitter, so I kept an eye on the Wiki page and made sure the information was accurate. I recommended someone check it out today, and was told it was no longer there.

Now, I understand totally your rules on Notability etc, and I would be happy to provide adequate sources to back up the information on the page - I think this is a good lesson to me to treat the academic side of your site with more respect. If you would consider putting the page back up, I would be happy to ensure it is properly sourced.

I'm more than a little hesitant about doing this. At the point when I deleted it, the page was an extensive biography containing a large amount of irrelevant and unverifiable information, and was more than a little promotional in its tone. As an editor with a severe conflict of interest, you should not be making any edits to the article even if it is restored. I won't oppose its restoration if you request a deletion review, nor if another editor recreates it from scratch, but I'm afraid that I'm not willing to resurrect the article in its previous state for you to work on. I am going to likely recreate it but wanted to give you a heads up. GNG is met but I am surprised at how much effort it is to find more basic info (I miss Google News Archive searches). He has been part of 2 notable bands along with a big side project. I'm keeping it stubbish for now and not going into details to pad it (in depth about the Sleep band, his personal life, and style reviews) but those could make it in in one way or another. Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Yunshui. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

Merely that, whilst I personally hold a mild opposition to the the proposal, such opposition - and indeed, the very discussion - is moot, since there is no way for the proposal to be implemented (Adjectival definition #3 on Wiktionary).
