Disambiguation link notification for September 23

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Dawa Dem, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bhutanese. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 07:40, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Arati Saha Google Doodle.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the file appears to be a blatant copyright infringement of https://www.google.com/doodles/arati-sahas-80th-birthday. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Wikiacc () 23:30, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

Please go ahead with the deletion. I realised the file was copyrighted only after I uploaded it. It was a mistake and I'll ensure it never happens again. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 00:22, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Editor's Barnstar
You're quite productive, writing the Dawa Dem article. I'm so lazy that I could barely finish one sentence and two citations in 5 months while you've already nominated it for DYK. Very grateful for your hard work. Keep it up. TryKid[dubiousdiscuss] 01:10, 26 September 2020 (UTC)

access to book

Do you have digital or physical access to C. T. Dorji's book "100 Prominent People of Modern Bhutan"? I imagine it would be very useful in creation of many Bhutanese biographies. If yes, would it be possible to email portions of the book? Regards, TryKid[dubiousdiscuss] 11:53, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

@TryKid:: Unfortunately, I don't. I only saw a web preview of the book. Lots of pages were skipped, but as luck would have it, two out of three pages on Dawa Dem were in the preview. This is where I saw it: https://www.exoticindiaart.com/book/details/100-prominent-people-of-modern-bhutan-NAM619/. The free web preview contains only bits of Jigme Singye Wangchuck, Dawa Dem, Dr. Dechen Tsering, Rinzin Ongdra Wangchuck, Jey Yeshey Singye and Je Yonton Tharchhin. Dechen Pem and the current Druk Gyalpo are the only ones with complete entries freely visible.

@TryKid:: Btw, can you read the Tibetan alphabet? Then you can copy-paste Dawa Dem's name from the BBS obituary to use in the infobox. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 12:57, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
I somehow missed to reply to this, sorry about that. And sadly I can't read write Tibetan either. And while copy pasting doesn't really require any language skills, checking the BBS obituary, I couldn't find her name written in Dzongkha? Sorry for this delay and regards, TryKid[dubiousdiscuss] 01:05, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
BBS has a full Dzongkha version of the page. That's why I asked if you could read Tibetan. And thanks for the 'star. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 02:30, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
I applaud your superior source finding skills. This is the second time I'm checking the BBS page and I still can't find the link to Dzongkha version from the English version page. But yeah, isolating her name from that page shouldn't be too hard, I'll try to post it today. Regards, TryKid[dubiousdiscuss] 02:47, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
I see the Dzongkha bit. Where did you get it from? I've found this: འདི་ཡང་ instead. The Wiki article on Ashi also gives the Dzongkha version of Dasho, which is དྲག་ཤོས. In the BBS page, my version འདི་ཡང་ is found right after the word དྲག་ཤོས. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 03:32, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
No, no, sorry, I think you're right. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 03:43, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
After what happened with the Scots Wikipedia, I understand that that I shouldn't be writing languages I have zero understanding of with scripts I have zero understanding of. The spelling I pasted was given to me by another Bhutanese friend familiar with Dzongkha, so it shouldn't have any errors. Only prominent Wikipedia user, that I know of, with Dzongkha understanding is CFynn, currently inactive/not very active. But there are probably many Tibetan users available, so try to cross check with them. Regards, TryKid[dubiousdiscuss] 04:07, 26 September 2020 (UTC)

The wait icon on second criteria is for the overall verifiability, not copyvio/plagiarism. As Jon698 explains at the GA review page, the dates aren't cited in the infobox. Either the dates should be added in the main prose or just repeat the citations in the infobox. I would suggest the former. And of course the first one is self explanatory: expand the lead. In this edit at French language, you said you thought it was "odd" that France wasn't linked; but actually, that's per the style guide; see MOS:OVERLINK. It's not a big deal, and it's fine to leave it that way now, but I thought you might like to know about the "#What generally should not be linked" section of the Style guide on links. Dawat-e-Islami extensive talk and NPOV tag

You are more than welcome to discuss the issues outlined in the talk section of that article. Its easy to say I am violating a Wikipeida standard to prevent changes to an article that is grossly incorrect and biased. Zugzwangerone (talk) 04:33, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

Zugzwangerone I warned you for inserting broken external hyperlinks into the lead of the article, not for its content. Now that you fixed it and added it as a citation I have no problem with the article, with which I have no real connection except an obligation to protect it from vandalism - an obligation which I have to every article on the encyclopedia. Since adding random external links in the body of the article is a common action of hit-and-run vandals, I had to warn you with a standard warning to make sure you weren't one. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 04:47, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

I have corrected the error and was in process of doing so as expediently as possible, --the error was in place no more than five minutes! The article's problems are listed in talk.

NPOV dispute [Elements sourced but misquoting the works by Thomas K. Gugler and reliance on Primary Sources] Thomas K Gugler, an anthropologist, presents Dawat-e-Islami from a NPOV. I have read and interpreted several of his primary research papers. Guglar research papers are cited arbitrarily throughout the entire article.

This Wikipedia article takes selections of Gugler's work out of context and it omits those sections which are of major importance in providing balance and objectivity to this subject.

Primary Sources

The article provides information on Dawat-e-Islami from Dawat-e-Islami and other outlets. Although this might be acceptable the information presented is without balance.

Gugler references are primary source research papers.

Sources Erroneously Quoted - Limited NPOV Sourcing Available in English, Quality of Supporting Articles.

Found incidents of articles which were quoted; when you check those articles they speak to different issues. In a search for acceptable sources, I found few-none A press release or press recognition about a Charity event may not meet the standard of a supporting article

The Section "Call to Righteousness"

May speak to the mission statement of Dawat-e-Islami but it does so from a perspective of passion. That section relies on a misquote of Gugler and should be incorporated in the first paragraph of this entry. Zugzwangerone (talk) 00:49, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

Qadri says a person who commits blasphemy should be handed in to police, but if another individual were driven by their emotions to kill the blasphemer, the law should not apply.

Charlie Hebdo - NPOV lacking due to omission

So essentially the founder of Dawat-e-Islami is advocating that murder is justified should an apostate blaspheme his religion. This is a salient point both for this entry and the entry for Charlie Hebdo I was not aware of this until I started researching the topic looking for links.

Indigenous peoples

Hi,

I just wanted to give a heads up that I may have inadvertently reverted some of your editorial changes on the Climate change and Indigenous peoples, particularly as it relates to the capitalization of "Indigenous". In my experience, "Indigenous" tends to be capitalized as a proper noun (see, for example, recommendations in Elements of Indigenous Style). I was planning on doing some more edits on the page (mainly grammatical/stylistic), but will hold off on adjusting the capitalization if you're committed to lowercase.

Jordanbkinder (talk) 19:53, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Jordanbkinder

@Jordanbkinder: But I thought I left all Is capitalised for the word Indigenous? I only made the other words in the titles lowercase, because section headings should not normally contain capital letters. If I have inadvertently de-capitalised the word Indigenous you can go ahead and change it. Thanks and regards, Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 04:19, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Elements of Art

Hello i just got this message in my Notifs:

Please do not use styles that are unusual, inappropriate or difficult to understand in articles, as you did in Elements of art. There is a Manual of Style, and edits should not deliberately go against it without special reason. Specifically, changing American spellings to British, and vice versa, where such a change is not required according to the Manual, is strictly disallowed.

1. I did not deliberately edit this page in a 'unusual, inappropriate or difficult to understand' way. Color is unusual as Colour is the correct spelling of this word. How is this this strictly disallowed when all i was trying to do was fix a spelling mistake on this page! Who gets to say the 'American English' is more right then the way it should be spelt?!? ChuckyDooDaa (talk) 04:39, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

@ChuckyDooDaa: Hello! I did not actually mean to say that your edit was unusual or difficult to understand - the message I posted is a stock warning that is posted by a bot I use while reverting inappropriate edits.
Coming to the actual issue of spelling, Wikipedia's Manual of Style prohibits the changing of British spelling to American and vice-versa in situations like this, as dictated in the section MOS:RETAIN. You are correct in that there is no form of English 'more correct' than another; therefore, in these cases, whatever existing style is there must be retained as the MOS requires. I have no personal interest in ensuring the retention of American spelling, being as I am a user of British spelling myself. Kind regards, Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 11:58, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

User:Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI Thanks, sorry if that came out rude i was just kinda annoyed. I did some googling and a fair few pages say that America is the only country to primarily spell it 'color', and the rest of the English speaking world 'Colour'. Shouldnt this mean the majority of the spelling should be shown on Wikipedia, which is used all across the world, so it suits more people then just Americans? Thanks. ChuckyDooDaa (talk) 23:34, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

@ChuckyDooDaa: It is true that US and Canada are unique in their spelling among English-speaking countries, but it is American English that is the dominant form of English globally, that is, including non-English speaking countries (save for India, maybe). This is an important point, as many non-English speakers also refer to the English Wikipedia, as it is the most reliable among all Wikipedias. Additionally, even among the Anglophone countries, Canada and the US account for a large proportion of the populace. I hope this answers your questions. Kind regards, Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 06:01, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

@User:Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI Thanks that makes sense i guess, i hope in the future i will be able to help Wikipedia in more productive ways. Regards, ChuckyDooDaa — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChuckyDooDaa (talkcontribs) 04:07, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

@ChuckyDooDaa: That's the spirit I wish everybody who makes edits here had! The bureaucracy and rules here might be frustrating to beginners, but as one stays on in the editing sphere, one realises just how important they are to preserve Wiki as an enyclopaedia. Unfortunately, as an unavoidable casualty, too many beginners are scared off by these rules; I am happy that you are not one of them. Happy editing! Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 14:30, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

@User:Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI Another idea, Im guessing your not the head of Wikipedia, but i was thinking they should have seperate languages like: English(American) English(British) in the possible languages? Its hard to explain i hope you get what i mean. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChuckyDooDaa (talkcontribs) 22:13, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

@ChuckyDooDaa: Oof, sorry for the late reply, I completely forgot. A separate BrE Wiki... I don't think that will happen, because the dialects are largely exactly the same. A few different spellings do not warrant a whole new encyclopaedia - you see, Wiki is not like a ready-made app where you can switch between different language versions of the same content; every single language has an independent Wikipedia of its own, with a different pool of editors and completely different content. I doubt they'd make a separate British English encyclopaedia - it would basically be a duplication of the whole existing English Wiki just for the sake of a few spellings. Another issue it would cause that once separated, the 'pedias will grow separately of one another, which would disturb intra-language uniformity, if you get what I mean. This is not a term of normal usage for any person. I have seen some good arguments mentioned earlier and have added an important point regarding his nominations. Hi Wilhelm! Re your Discord comment here, could we get those sources added to WP:RSP if they've been discussed enough at WP:RSN? PTI and The New Indian Express appear not to be on there currently. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 18:36, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI, since the original reviewer has not posted to this review since they opened the page, it's time to consider it abandoned. (I've said as much on the review page.) I notice that you did a review in their absence.

I would appreciate it if you would take over the review and complete it, including (if appropriate) final passage. If you aren't prepared to do this, please let me know and I'll find someone else to take over. Thank you very much. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:41, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

BlueMoonset, I'll do it. Thanks for reminding me, I'd forgotten completely - I'm in the middle of a kind of content creation project, and also got involved in what was almost an edit war. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 06:43, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Hi there. I have my QPQ review prepared, but there's one point I'd like clarification on before submitting it. The article I've reviewed (but not the nomination itself) contains an image of doubtful copyright status. Should this be raised as an issue in the DYK? The guideline only seems to cover the text of the article. Thanks again for your assistance! Tevildo (talk) 16:33, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

Tevildo, yes, it definitely must be raised as an issue. Copyvios must be filtered out at all stages. I suggest that you start the DYK review, and mention the questionable nature of the copyright status in the review. May I ask which DYKN it is? Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 16:42, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
The DYK is Template:Did you know nominations/Nyasaland Volunteer Reserve. I've published my review and informed the author - I hope that everything is still within process. Tevildo (talk) 16:59, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
Tevildo, I checked the review - it's all good. I agree, the image of Merriman must be removed if a free or truly PD version can't be found. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 17:31, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
No, Tevildo, I've asked around, and it apparently isn't a problem. Keep the request for a better version of the picture on the review, but if they don't, or can't, provide another picture, just go ahead anyway. The licence, PD-US, is correct and would allow the picture to have any kind of text on it, without any repercussions. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 17:35, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

DYK for Attara Kacheri

On 11 February 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Attara Kacheri, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that unable to demolish the colonial-style Attara Kacheri (pictured), K. Hanumanthaiah, Chief Minister of Mysore, instead ordered that the Dravidian-style Vidhana Soudha be built opposite it at a slight elevation? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Attara Kacheri. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Attara Kacheri), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (ie, 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  • England Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  • Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  • Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Trouted

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

You have been trouted for: Romani people RafaelJC12 (talk) 04:35, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

After I edited this article, adding: "In many other languages, regarding cognates of the word, such as gitano, cigano and gitan, this perception is either very small or nonexistent." You reverted saying: "'this perception is either very small or nonexistent' - claim not corroborated by sources, one of which is a dictionary (!)"

My first objection to this is: Why is it a problem to use dictionary as a source? This page uses Merriam-Webster as its source number 4. I'm not sure why you don't think the other sources corroborate the claim. They don't explicitly restate what I said, but the manner in which the word is extensively used in those texts should imply its connotation. Similarly, I could argue that the word "negro" has very different connotations in English, Spanish and Portuguese by showing how the word is used in different texts. Not only the sources I cited but also the foreign Wikipedia pages I linked do exactly that. I'd also like to ask you whether or not you agree with the claim I made. I understand that, as far as I know, you might not speak Spanish, Portuguese or French, so perhaps you don't know from practice the connotations of these words.

@RafaelJC12: You admit that They don't explicitly restate what I said. Then, per Wikipedia policy, you can't use them to justify your claim - because what you are doing is synthesis, assuming certain things and intent that are not explicitly expressed by the sources. Whether I personally agree with your claim or not is not relevant to this discussion. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 04:45, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
Also, dictionaries are used to corroborate definitions. I don't contest that the French word indeed means "Romani", just that it does not state non-offensiveness the way your claim needs. Wilhelm Tell DCCXLVI converse | fings wot i hav dun 04:49, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi. This revert shows you did not check whether I was correct. That template is also used under the hidden nav boxes. 2A02:C7C:1018:6E00:4C92:78B1:B463:8E6D (talk) 10:40, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Please do not delete your vote at WP:Requests for adminship/Vami IV when you change your mind, as it is confusing to readers, particularly not if it entails moving/deleting other editors' comments.
