Signature size

Yes, I did change mine after that user left a message on my talk page and I took the images off, and no, Jeff's signature size is much taller than mine is (Jeff's is 5 pixels and mine is 2 pixels). It says nowhere in the signature policy page that you cannot have a link to your autograph page. It only says that if you do link to your autograph page, you should not use a super font size (like the size of Jeff's signature). Yeah, and I noticed Carrera changed his signature to make it smaller just before he replied here, so it would look like it was never big. Like I'm that stupid. Just one small problem, Diligent Terrier. You said that another editor's signature didn't conform to the guideline Wikipedia:Signature, but ironically you seem to be ignoring the fact that your own signature, at 452 characters in length excluding the datestamp, is far beyond the injunction in that guideline to "Keep signatures short, both in display and markup." Keep in mind that most of the code for my signature is for multi-colors and stuff, which does not make it any longer. It really doesn't matter what the signature looks like in the source; what matters is how it looks on the page. In that case, your signature is much longer. Sorry, but all of the code in your signature makes it longer. For instance, while I'm trying to edit this discussion and respond to your comment, I have to search a very large mess of formatting to try to find, hidden somewhere inside, the words of the comment to which I'm trying to respond. You have been editing this article to state as fact that George Bush will leave office on January 20. What did I do? I thought we were friends? No, it doesn't specifically state that non-registered account users may not remove comments. I wouldn't worry so much about every anon archiving their talk pages... there are only maybe a handful of anon users who do archive their talk pages. Informally, on IRC, a user came along and asked if it was okay for anon's to remove comments/warnings from their talk pages and several (3) users responded "Yes". Diligent Terrier, I can appreciate that the information you want to post on Jimbo's page is important to you. First, you need to be aware that many editors patrol that page and regularly revert information from it - several times a day.

Secondly, the threaded discussion happening on that page right now is very important to the project. Have you even read it?

And most importantly - the editor you have templated has been at Wikipedia for a long time. He has returned from a self-imposed exile to defend Jimbo Wales, a man with whom he has had serious differences in the past. That requires a great deal of moral fibre. To be a bit more straightforward, there are things you are doing that give me concern. When I saw your posts on Jimbo's talk page I found them odd and I came here to investigate. I think you need to rethink your approach in a few areas. Terrier should be your nickname, not your approach, as worrying at things with jaws firmly clenched won't work here. You seem to be arguing with quite experienced editors about what is and isn't appropriate... when several people tell you you're on the wrong path, that's usually quite significant. A further word; User:Lar is one of the most respected wikipedians currently editing. Not only is he an admin, but he has Checkuser rights (the ability to find the ip address behind an account name, and there are only a dozen or less of these highly trusted individuals on en-Wiki), and is a steward - as sort of super admin - on metaWiki. He really is someone whose words, softly spoken as they are, are to be heeded. Put it this way; if Lar decided to block you (and he will do everything he can to persuade you to change and not have to take that decision) then the very few people that would be foolish enough to undo the block (and I'm one of them) will do it only to increase the tariff. Ownership of WP:Home

Can you stop putting on every piece of Wikipedia about WP:HOME that you are the founder. It reads to me that you are trying to exert undue control/influence. I also just went to your talk page, and noticed that you had plagiarized my entire newsletter code and template I created. It's not that I have a problem with that, but the template says that you "designed" it and wrote it. Why would you want to recall me ... I've done so much to get this thing started? Well, anyway, I was thinking of doing the same thing (posting rules for a recall). I think I would set up the rules to say that you need at least two thirds of the members to vote for a recall, plus a very good reason behind it, which must be related to activities that the user did which related to the project. Or, if the user has not edited at all for more than 2 years, or has been blocked from Wikipedia for some reason, there would be a forced resignation. The user can also resign at any time. WP:OWN and other issues

There seem to be some chronic issues with regards to your conduct regarding the Homeschooling project. For a project with 64 articles, none beyond B status, there is a tremendous amount of real or attempted bureaucracy being imposed, and your attempts to assert your contributions over and above those of other participants and of Wikipedians generally in this area is unacceptable. It may indeed seem somewhat ironic to the outside observer that your attempts to shut down a rival project actually inspired a revival in that project's fortunes - like others have said, there is no reason why the two projects cannot coexist peacefully. In addition, your canvassing attempts with regard to your own proposal (to the extent of telling people which box to "tick") on the Alternative Education talk page actually reduced your buying power with the audience.

Another thing - do not relocate talk pages to some obscure location that you wish others to find - that avoids scrutiny and puts up barriers to participation. Just because some other non-compliant project does it does not mean we all should - look for example at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Australia (44,000 articles), Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history (64,000 articles), Wikipedia talk:WikiProject California (14,000 articles), Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Television (8,500 articles) and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Canada (21,000 articles), none of which have seen fit to break talk page guidelines in such a way.

I would warn you that, especially given you have already been approached by others on these matters above on your talk page, your behaviour on these matters could be seen as tending disruptive, and that should you not behave in a more cooperative manner and one in line with policies and guidelines, there will be few choices available to us as far as how to handle this situation. I see that you have argued above with other users (including User:Lar, a user for whom I have the highest of respect and who is a bureaucrat, steward and checkuser on en.wikipedia) on similar issues - I suggest strongly that you take what they are saying on board. Excessive tagging

I'm not entirely sure that you're even reading the articles you're adding the Homeschooling banner to. At least two three seven were not homeschooled and most of them were educated well before the institutionalisation of comprehensive schooling as a practice in the 1840s-1870s or thereabouts. I'd suggest stopping and thinking about the scope of the project before proceeding further - we had to do this over at Western Australia as a lot of stuff peripherally involved WA which was not, however, within our scope. It doesn't say that in the articles - I read each of them before reverting (at least one received no education at all while others went to school and seemingly did quite well...) The three which were home-schooled I left in. I made a big assumption that the scope of the project is to include every person who ever got home schooled who has an article on Wikipedia in keeping those three in, but I'd again suggest you need to consider what your scope is and what the project is trying to achieve. By this I mean that the fact they were home schooled takes up one bit of one line to at most a four-line paragraph in a massive article in most cases. As WikiProjects' main purposes are to develop or to encourage development, I don't see exactly what WP Homeschooling could do for any of the articles which have been added tonight. History is kind of important here (I should disclose I myself am a fully-qualified educator btw)... before a certain point in history all rich people had tutors or were effectively "home-schooled", but this was done within a framework very different to today and at a time when people could specialise in certain fields and know nothing of the rest of the world. The alternate method (which was mentioned in at least one case) was the "classical education" consisting of the Trivium and the Quadrivium (essentially teaching people how to think, reason and perceive). I've seen modern country schools which work along similar lines, due to class sizes - although of course what they teach is the modern education curriculum. Those who were less advantaged had really few options, most of them ended up working down a mine or in a mill or whatever brought in money for their family, the few who were lucky to learn anything were definitely not "schooled" in any sense, merely somewhat self-taught through a natural intelligence or perception. Eventually society decided that this was not the way to manage things and comprehensive schooling - initially on almost military lines with very poor standards, which improved to about 1900 to something not unlike the system we have today - was introduced and compulsory schooling laws (initially only for primary, extended later) were enacted. Home-schooling was a reaction to this movement (i.e. a counter-movement) much as Montessori and other systems started to emerge. Therefore, discussion of "alternative education" or "homeschooling" must rest within a notion that there was a paradigm of comprehensive education which had been rejected. At various of the times these people lived, the notion of educating people en masse in buildings in a wide variety of subjects would have seemed fanciful rubbish. Editing images with an external browser

Can someone give very basic instructions on how to edit images using an external browser. I have been to all the help pages, and I can't understand them. Thanks! - DiligentTerrier ^{and friends} 16:17, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Shortcuts to user page

According to WP:TWINKLE, the script is to be used to assist them [wikipedia users] in common Wikipedia maintenance tasks and to help them deal with acts of vandalism, I fail to see how this, this, or this falls into maintenance or vandalism. To say that reverting a highly respected administrator, without any prior discussion, is any form of maintenance is downright wrong. I think you owe OIC, at the least, an apology. Upon further inspection of your use of twinkle, i have found this diff by User:76.98.204.203, which you claim is Blaitant vandalism. It is hardly vandalism, the edit certainly did not add anything to the article, but that doesnt constitute vandalism. Not only did you incorrectly label their contribution, but you placed two user-warning tags on their talk page, when theyve only ever made one edit to wikipedia [2]. Further investigation of your reverts on wikipedia, led me to this this, whereby you reverted a user who removed a warning by a user and added content to his talk page. According to WP:TALK, this user is free to delete comments from his talk page:

Users may freely remove comments from their own talk pages, though archiving is preferred. They may also remove some content in archiving. The removal of a warning is taken as evidence that the warning has been read by the user.

You not only reverted his edit to his own talk page, but you then went ahead and added a user warning template, which according to the above, is downright wrong. It may be worth noting that after your warning on his talk page, he never returned, wikipedia relies on volunteers, and new editors should be made more than welcome, rather than being treated like he has. May i suggest that you remove the warning on his talk page and apologise. Your poor use of editing scripts is causing much concern to me, and some administrators, and you may wish to review your use. In this case, the user changed what the comment said and left the signature at the end. That is wrong. Yes, you can remove notices from your talk page, but when you edit others comments, leaving their signature at the end, even if it is on their talk page, that is considered vandalism. - DiligentTerrier ^{and friends} 19:56, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

It may be interesting to note that since you arrived on his talk page, he hasnt made another edit, wikipedia relies on volunteers, and youve possibly played your part in ensuring they wont return. The edit doesn't seem to be vandalism, just seems to be someone who misunderstands the trivia guideline. Removal of content

I note in your edit here, you informed another user that OIC considered the edit by RC-0722 as vandalism, and then went on to say, that it was nowhere near vandalism. On wikipedia, we assume good faith when dealing with other contributors. You also left a message on his talk page "Warning him", for what? following wikipedia policy? Your downright poor knowledge of policy and continued misuse of scripts and user warning template is a major concern to myself, and is something you may wish to address. User talk pages, it should be noted, are not owned by the user they pertain to, but by the community as a whole - while some things are considered differently as against other namespaces, others are not. The matter is resolved anyway - I talked to the user concerned and a way forward for the Homeschooling project was discussed. I would suggest that dropping the highly aggressive attitude would be a good start - I note Twenty Years's comments to you with regard to WP:BITE. Orderinchaos 21:49, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Also, upon your very first complaint you were asking for an apology:

• Saying someone has misused a script is somehow uncivil or not assuming good faith?
• Saying that an editor hasnt returned after your comments on his talk page is not uncivil or not AGF, its just simply stating a fact.
• Expecting an apology may be a bit too far for you, but in my standards apologising when you "mess up" is the right thing to do, take that as you see it. But that isnt being uncivil or not AGF.

I must say I'm not actually seeing "bad faith" in the above - I think you're possibly misconstruing legitimate, valid criticism of your actions in an at times robust style as being some form of abuse. Regarding 1.1 - there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. 1.2 - could maybe have used more calm language, but the point is there. 1.3 - he's actually correct, that's a WP:BITE issue. 2 - again correct. He has apologised himself when he's done wrong in times past, so he expects it from others - people in this thing have a wide variety of styles and attitudes and I'm fairly sure if you were to put 5 randomly selected active Wikipedians in a town hall somewhere they wouldn't agree on anything. But we can at least agree to get on, and to abide by policy.

Additionally, you said you "witnessed" (not experienced, so TY got confused as he assumed you meant it was to someone other than yourself) complaints against an "established and experienced user" and "over something that does not concern [Twenty Years] at all" - it does concern the community to manage behaviour which does not build or enhance the community, that's why anyone from the newest user up can give warnings. Indeed, your behaviour and knowledge/application of policy does concern and has concerned me from time to time, especially regarding misuse of anti-vandalism scripts against newbies and your at times aggressive approach to handling situations. Note how quickly Kimu and I went from a warning situation to one where we were actually chatting constructively.

Also, I think it's fair to say our opinion of what constitutes "established and experienced" does differ. I'm not meaning to suggest you are otherwise qualified, but when you assert it in public, realise how it may be taken by those for whom the above assertion may appear somewhat like chest-beating (especially given your relatively short duration on the project and the number of issues which have arisen). A bit of humility and deference to the work of others goes a long way, and may well help you in learning what is needed to become what you desire to be. When I was about your duration on the project, I was involved in solid content-building work, deferred frequently to those in my project whom I respected for their abilities (I'm sure at least one of them got thoroughly sick of me), and learned a lot from them. I became an admin in an unopposed RFA just 3 months later (i.e. 11 months in) without ever having had to ask or approach anybody for support. My work in content-building and my even manner were cited by many as grounds for support. Worthy of thinking about. Orderinchaos 20:03, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
