Removal of headers

Soviet missile renames

Hello. I notice you have renamed many Soviet missile pages to their manufacturer designations, with an edit comment that there had been a discussion. The discussion at the WPMILHIST talk page seemed to have the opposite consensus (use NATO designations), so I'm wondering if there was another discussion somewhere. WikiCup 2014 September newsletter

In one month's time, we will know our WikiCup 2014 champion. Newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) has taken a strong lead with a featured list (historical coats of arms of the U.S. states from 1876) and a raft of featured pictures. Reigning champion Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) is in second place with a number of high-importance biology articles, including new FA Isopoda and new GA least weasel. Scotland Casliber (submissions), who is in his fifth WikiCup final, is in third, with featured articles Pictor and Epacris impressa.

Signups for the 2015 WikiCup are open. All Wikipedians, new and experienced, are warmly invited to sign up for the competition. Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may also like to sign up for the GA Cup, a new WikiCup-inspired competition which revolves around completing good article reviews. Hello, can you please have a look at the draft? It was recently deleted via an AfD and I have significantly expanded it since then. Closing Community Sanctions re - Krzyhorse22

Hi - I think the community sanctions request re Krzyhorse22 is closeable with consensus only for him to stop templating StanTheMan87's talk page and claiming he's consulting with the CIA (there doesn't appear to be consensus for a total IBAN). Would it be possible you could close it as such? I've just had an ANI opened against myself today so I think it would look bad if I was closing ANIs while I'm, simultaneously, being investigated. policy questions

I was looking at the AfD discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Australian heavyweight boxing champions and saw several keep arguments that seem like a misinterpretation to me--WP:IMPERFECT and WP:NOEFFORT. I thought I understood when those are applicable, but they're being used as reasons to keep the aforementioned article--which is one I would have thought of as an obvious delete. Sticking Forks in FLOW

No, not that Flo, as fun as that might be! Given the Foundation's intention to shove FLOW onto WP, I'm anticipating a mass exodus by many disillusioned editors. I just might be one of them, depending on how bad FLOW really is. In thinking about it, I'm hoping that this might finally be what gets some viable forks of WP started. I haven't heard a thing. I'm not planning on any exodus; frankly, the instiutional inertia is such that there is, and will only be, Wikipedia as viable. Most of the "I'm leaving" talk is just that - it'll boil back down to grumbling and complaning at a low boil, just as with VisualEditor and all the other stuff the WMF decides father-mother knows best. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:48, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
Ok, you're probably right, but one can still hope! It's just becoming more and more apparent that WMF really doesn't care what the editors think, and I just wonder how long that can go on without reaching a breaking point. Fuzhou Airlines

Hello there. I started Fuzhou Airlines back in March 2014. It was deleted because they hadn't actually flown yet.

You closed Fuzhou Airlines (2nd nomination) per WP:CRYSTAL stating "...No prejudice against recreation/undeletion if/when WP:CRYSTAL no longer applies. ...".

Their maiden flight is scheduled for October 30, 2014. If the flight happens as scheduled, would it be okay for me to recreate the article? The new draft is at User:Anna Frodesiak/Orange sandbox and the non-free logo is on my computer ready for upload.

WikiCup 2014: The results

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Scotland Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

AfD question

I am a bit confused by the closure at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Elton Dharry. It was not done by an admin but was closed as "no consensus" although no one had voted to keep it (or even argued for it to be kept). Granted only two people voted, but they did both advocate deletion. I didn't vote, but I was wondering if you think that was a proper closure. Thanks. EQT

Today, I looked up this article and its history and noticed that you had blocked the corporation back in January 2012. I was curious that there was so little information on the Mountain Valley Pipeline. I was about to add something when I saw that an ip only user had deleted a great deal of information this month, not only on the pipeline, but a whole section on legal problems and a reference to environmental problems in PA. I am suspicious that the corporation may be editing again, because of the nature of the wholesale deletions and the location of the IP in Pittsburgh PA, home of the corporate offices. http://www.iplocationtools.com/108.32.74.82.html https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=EQT&diff=632904766&oldid=631979273 How should I proceed? If you deem it correct to block this IP and reverse the deletions, I'll be glad to edit for any POV problems and make sure to include not just the website for the opposition to the pipeline, but also for EQT's side (http://mountainvalleypipeline.info/), but it seems to me that this won't be sufficient without monitoring for future such deletions. Thanks Rich. The watchlist will take care of any further problems, but what should I do about restoring the deleted material (and editing for POV)? I know one of the two conveners of the Facebook group about the pipeline, a professional soil scientist who lives a distance from Blacksburg, so I doubt he's the original author of the deleted material, but he should be able to give me sources for any claims that are unsupported and I'll explain POV to him and urge that folks editing the article to include the opposition sign up for an account so they can be accountable (unlike EQT, if it's the source for the deletion.)--Beth Wellington (talk) 23:26, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

I have another question about an AfD for you. I see the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cristian Favela was closed as a "no consensus" by a non-admin. This follows on my question last week about the AfD on Elton Dharry (see User Talk:The Bushranger/Archive27#AfD question). "No consensus" may have been the right decision, but aren't non-admin closures only supposed to be for non-controversial decisions? This one, which I did participate in, doesn't seem non-controversial. Or am I mistaken about the nature of non-admin closures? I've been on WP for years, but I still feel like a newbie in many ways. Missing some team names

Hello Bushranger.

I recently added Nascar Results tables to pages of quite some drivers. I could not find al the team names and these drivers are missing some team names: Carl Long, Dave Marcis, Mike Harmon and Joe ruttman. I also had a look at Morgan Shepherd's Nationwide Table and the team names I added to 2001 and 2003 are wrong. Perhaps you can find some of the team names? WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

  • We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
  • In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
  • The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

Need some help here

Hi B, calling upon you again, Obi Wan Kinobi, as I have a follower who seems to want to remove imagery from films that I edit under the same basis even though I do not pick out frivolous or fluff images to illustrate key section of the film articles that I work up. As you may know, I am a former filmmaker, and have an interest in particular areas of film production, so I do not create trivial commentary or provide useless imagery. Over categorization of Soviet battlecruisers

If I remember correctly, you do a lot with categories and I'd like to solicit your opinion about some ship cats.

Recently a user added Category:Kronshtadt-class battlecruisers to match Category:Stalingrad-class battlecruisers, but the problem is that both categories only have one legitimate article as none of the ships were finished. So I see no need for either category as the class articles should be added directly to Category:World War II battlecruisers of the Soviet Union or Category:Cold War battlecruisers of the Soviet Union as appropriate. So I'm not sure what criteria I should use at CfD to get rid of the class categories and figure that you might know exactly how to handle the situation.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 20:31, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Well, IMHO, these are entirely legitimate categorisations, actually - per the exception to WP:SMALLCAT the ships-by-class tree is an established category tree that allows for single-article categories without any fuss; the categorisation of the individual ships' redirects there aids the user. - The Bushranger One ping only 21:33, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

Your opinion please...

I'd like to request your opinion on three individuals who were part of one of the many bulk AFD where you cast a bulk delete.

In Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Muhammed al-Darbi the nominator pasted the same boilerplate nomination for articles on six additional individuals that he had been using in a new bulk nomination every day for weeks. I suspected he wasn't complying with WP:BEFORE, wasn't really reading the articles, and hadn't conducted his own web search so as to reach an informed conclusion as to whether the individuals were actually notable. Since he claimed all six were Guantanamo captives, but three of the men had never been Guantanamo captives, had been held in the CIA's black sites.

Those three are in the news again, following the release of the Senate Intelligence Committee's unclassified summary of its report on the CIA's use of torture. The report identified the three as among the individuals the CIA tortured, tortured without authorization, and said that they were wrongly held. The Senate report went into detail about about how they were tortured and abused. Various newspapers have commented on these individuals, their unauthorized torture, and their unauthorized detention. Some of them have done their best to marshal the information that had already been published about these men -- the wikipedia articles about these men would have been very useful to reporters, a few days ago, when this was a breaking story.

The reason I am writing you is that I am hoping I can ask you to think about these articles again, and offer me your opinion as to how much new information you think they would require before you would be prepared to voice a "keep" opinion if they were restored to article space, and someone nominated the expanded article for deletion.

We've had some collegial interactions, when we agreed in our "keep" opinions on maritime vessels.

Before I go any farther, I think I should address a comment you left in this afd. I've tried to give a civil, collegial, meaningful reply to every meaningful concern, but the barrage of hundreds of afd back in July and August of 2012 just didn't leave me with enough time to reply to this comment.

You wrote:

If I had named particular individuals as torture apologisits, and I couldn't back that up with some pretty definitive diffs, I would agree that was a lapse from good faith. But I did not name anyone in particular. Specifically, I do not regard you as a torture apologist.

I have discussed torture and detention policy off-wiki, and have encountered many individuals who have been very openly apologists for torture. I didn't say that the torture apologists I was talking about were on wiki. My comment? I think that with a comment like that, if someone personally don't think it applies to them, their best choice is to not see it as a personal attack.

First, clearly, Muhammed al-Darbi, Salah 'Ali Qaru, Muhammad Assad, who weren't ever held at Guantanamo Bay, should not have been redirected to Yemeni detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

Taking an extreme AGF view, I would assume you read my comment more closely than the nominator, and that you read the articles more closely than the nominator, and that your lazy fingers wrote something you did not mean. I would assume you were only recommeding that the three Guantanamo captives be redirected to 'Fooian detainees at Guantanamo Bay', and that the other three men's articles should have been redirected to something like Yemeni individuals detained in CIA black sites, or reasonable equivalent. Nominator however ignored this important point and did redirect all to 'Fooian detainees at Guantanamo Bay'.

Second, with regard to "inherited notability", can I ask what you think should be dismissed as a mere "passing mention?

The Washington Post article cited in the Muhammad Assad article devoted 4 paragraphs and 212 words specifically to Assad. 212 words is about an order of magnitude longer than the longest mention I would characterize as a "passing mention".

In August 2012 there were numerous verifiable, authoritative references, that hadn't been included in the article. Here are some:

This UN document, from 2010, devotes well over 600 words exclusively to Asad. I think that this too transcends ordinary definitions of "passing mention".

USA/Djibouti: Torture case filed at the ACHPR -- 276 words

I said in the afd, that "You have asserted that Guantanamo captives don't 'deserve' coverage. Coverage is neither a reward or a penalty. These captives merit coverage because there is sufficient coverage of them in reliable sources." I think this is an important principle, in general, and, if you disagree, I would be grateful if you would explain why.

Personally, I think practically anyone who examined the references available at the time the article was nominated for deletion would agree there were more than sufficient references for an article to measure up to the wikipedia standards of 2012. But I won't ask you to review the references of 2012.

Instead I would be grateful if you took at look at the references available today, as of December 2014. There many times more references today, as there were in 2012, many of them from the last week or so, since the Senate report explicitly acknowledged he had been held in secret by the CIA, that he had been tortured by the CIA, that he had been tortured without authorization by CIA officials, and finally that the CIA soon figured out he was an innocent man and kept torturing him anyhow. But there was another large spike of coverage in 2013. This google search has several different transliterations of his name, and some of the hits will be false positives, but I trust that you won't have much trouble recognizing which are valid hits.

Just to repeat my question, could you please take two or three minutes to look through the results of the google search above, and tell me whether you agree there are enough potential references that address him in detail to establish that the topic of Mohammed al-Asad measures up to the standards of 2014?

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

Quick question

Kinda tricky question, your opinion please

I recently came across the article on Frank Capra and noticed a weird pattern of a zillion cites from one source, which is always problematic. I looked up the book online and found it was accessible so I began to find the actual page numbers rather than a range of pages to use as reference sources. I found that the passages near or next to the cites were easy to track because the editor who was involved had done some very close paraphrasing, a diplomatic way to say that it was nearly a copy-viol. I was curious and saw that the long-time editor has been a heavy contributor in the past and still contributes, but without too much trouble, I could find the sources that were being used. Hi The Bushranger, not sure if you remember this discussion some years ago, which you contributed to. I've been slowly consolidating 'Military facilities' and 'Military bases' across a whole range of the subcategories. Now there is an opposed move of about three of the subcategories at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion#Opposed_nominations. Would you kindly consider giving your views there? WikiCup 2015 May newsletter

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by India The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Belarus Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. You restored the revision history of Sufyian Barhoumi in 2013. I appreciate that, thanks.

Your edit summary says: "Reverted to revision 501791820 by The Bushranger: actually, just put it back to the redirect - this was deleted at AfD, please use WP:DRV if you think it should be restored."

I added some new material. I've taken updated drafts to DRV, and have been mildly admonished for doing so, as the updates rendered those versions ineligible for speedy deletion of recreation of previously deleted material. So, I think I won't take this to DRV.

On the other hand, anyone who thought the updated version had the same problems as the original version could initiate an AFD on the updated version.

It was my position in 2012, and today, that none of the few dozen captives who actually faced charges before a Guantanamo Military Commission should be regarded as instances of WP:BLP1E. Since charges were so rare, I think it is a second event, and a well documented one.

If you took a look at the draft, I'd be grateful if you let me know whether you thought the updated version should also be deleted, and, if so, you could offer an explanation as to why.

WP:DELREV: JonTron

Hello,

I'm getting in touch about the deletion of the article JonTron, the discussion resulting in which was closed by you on 11 April 2014. I feel there is a case for reinstating this article per clause 3 of Wikipedia:Deletion review ("significant new information has come to light since a deletion that would justify recreating the deleted page"). In line with the WP:DELREV instructions, I am raising this with you in the first instance as the deleting administrator.

The quoted reason for the deletion was the absence of evidence of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". I've collected together some sources that I feel met these criteria. I've set these out below for your judgement.

  • The Michigan Daily [1]: refers to JonTron as a "YouTube gaming celebrit[y]".
  • Kinja [2]: refers to JonTron's role as a voice actor for the video game "A Hat in Time".
  • Mishka NYC [3]: a lengthy article on JonTron that refers to a number of notable elements, including his involvement with Game Grumps, his founding of the venerable website Normal Boots, and his media partnership with Amazon.com.
  • MAGFest [4]: refers to JonTron's attendance at MAGFest in 2013 and his then-1.3 million YouTube followers.
  • Kotaku [5]: a lengthy article that describes JonTron's involvement in the GAME_JAM reality show, which itself attracted considerable attention [6].
  • Kotaku [7]: a lengthy article on JonTron's departure from Game Grumps, which again received considerable attention.
  • VGFacts [8]: refers to JonTron being referenced in the video game "DLC Quest" - not in itself hugely notable, but it does reinforce his status as a web personality.

Taken together, I believe these sources (which are by no means exhaustive) represent "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". Additionally, I think it's important to note that personalities whose careers have been built around new media will inevitably have garnered less coverage in traditional sources than those working on more conventional mediums, so Wikipedia's typical approach to sourcing may verge on being overly prescriptive when applied here. On this basis, I would like to request that the page protection be lifted allowing for the recreation of the article to community standards.

I respect your opinion on nautical matters.

I haven't moved User:Geo Swan/boatnerd to article space because the sensible caution wikipedia contributors feel towards ordinary blogs, is frequently senselessly used to tar the relatively small number of genuinely reliable authoritative blogs, or online publications which merely call themselves blogs (like Scotusblog).

I'd be interested in your opinion on whether you see anything missing from User:Geo Swan/boatnerd.
