A barnstar for you!

Because of your endeavor and devotion shown on your contributions in articles in the scope of WikiProject Haiti. Nacho (Talk page) ★ 08:54, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Candy Lalanne

The article absolutely indicates he left Haiti with American citizenship - "One day in late August, they were called to the embassy. More paperwork, they thought. A few hours later, they left with passports and Social Security numbers." do you have a source that says he is a Haititan citizen? Do you think he left with a Haitian passport that cleared things up? Rikster2 (talk) 02:37, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

Rikster2, it says "Oak Ridge alum Cady Lalanne stuck in Haiti for months after finding out at 18, he was an illegal immigrant." "he was deported to Haiti; born in Haiti; left at the age of 7" That is clear evidence that he was a citizen of that country. While it says that he was given a passport and SSN, it doesn't explicity say American. What if he never had a "Haitian passport" since arriving by boat to the US but obtained one (to allow him to travel legally) and received a SSN due to permanent residency status filed at the US embassey in Haiti. The details are not clear and there aren't any sources that mention him being an American. It also mentions that his mother became "legal" when she married an American. Again doesn't mention citizenship for her either. Savvyjack23 (talk) 03:21, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

if you are given a passport and SSN, you are at least a dual citizen. Again, where is the source saying he is solely Haitian? The source goes out of its way to say the immigration issue was cleared up. At worst he is dual. Rikster2 (talk) 03:27, 9 August 2015 (UTC)
Okay dual is not beyond the realm of possibility. Its just that the source is unclear on what embassy in Haiti. Yes it says he left with a passport and SSN, but it could have been a Haitian passport and a SSN would come with residency filing to allow him back in the states. There are so many questions like, why was he deported? (Okay he was illegal but...) Why couldn't he handle the paperwork in the US? It just sounds a lot like permanent residency to me, by mentioning "legal" and "illegal". The article seems like it goes out of its way to NOT mention him being "American" and/or a "citizen". It's incredibly vague. Savvyjack23 (talk) 03:43, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

Vandalism by IP user 2001:8003:620F:1B00:5861:E7E5:6517:7A22

You're very welcome for my revert of 2001:8003:620F:1B00:5861:E7E5:6517:7A22's edit to Jean Baptiste Point du Sable. Turns out that IP user was fairly systematically removing category tags from articles about Black people that identified them as Black. In no case was there actually any question of the subjects' African ancestry; they hit articles including Melissa Harris-Perry, Solange Knowles, Charles Mingus, Sandman Sims, and Phyllis Wheatley. A few of their edits had been caught and reverted by other editors, but I fixed almost two dozen.

I actually asked at the Teahouse about how to go about getting an administrator to review that IP user's behavior and see if they should have a temporary editing ban or at least a warning (and also check to make sure they haven't switched to another IP address, I don't know if there's even a way to look for that other than checking lots of African-American biography articles). Nobody there seemed to consider it a problem or even necessarily vandalism, which I guess is ...we'll call that a cultural issue. Do you have any idea what the process is? —GrammarFascist contribstalk 02:07, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

GrammarFascist, thank you for bringing this to attention. I just reviewed 2001:8003:620F:1B00:5861:E7E5:6517:7A22's activity and it is indeed vandalism. This user is systematically removing content on various articles while not explaining reason for removal. A good way to start the block process is to first issue the user a warning on his/her talk page (see templates: WP:WARNVAND) and revert edits by mentioning "[Help:Reverting|Reverting] unexplained content removal" tag. If it continues, the next step gets easier, especially when dealing with an IP user; add the user's IP address and articles vandalized here --> WP:AIV and it will go under official review. If there is anything you are still unclear about, do not hesitate to ask. Savvyjack23 (talk) 19:22, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your guidance, Savvyjack23. I have added a warning template to their user page, and included a list of the articles they vandalized since the template only supports one and I wanted to make sure it was clear that all the other edits were unacceptable as well. This is my first time putting a warning template on another user's page, so I'd appreciate your looking at it for me.
So far there have been no new edits from that IP address. I'm still concerned the same user may be continuing their vandalism from a different IP address, though. My ISP changes my IP address on a nearly daily basis, so I know they wouldn't even necessarily have to be changing addresses deliberately. Do you think an administrator would check for that, or would I be told they hadn't done enough vandalism after a warning to 'qualify' for that kind of check? —GrammarFascist contribstalk 04:54, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for your encouragement

It is good to know that someone else is keeping an eye on the "Education in Haiti" article. I next plan on working on a section devoted to the favoritism towards private schools by former leaders and donors - big and small.

I plan on going to the Wiki conference in DC this October - will you be there? A couple of us interested in increasing the articles in the Haitian Creole will be having a sit down about the project. There will be several conference sessions on translation issues which may help us w/r to the Creole WP. If you'll be at the conference and/or are interested in the Creole WP send me an email.

Take care, NegMawon (talk) 18:55, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

NegMawon, I appreciate your appreciation! I try to keep a keen eye on all Haiti-related articles as best as I can. However I cannot do it alone! Which was why it was imperative that I revamp the WP:HAITI in recent years to attract participation. I won't be able to attend the conference in DC, but I am glad that you and fellow interested parties are taking the initiative. A Creole WP would be great, and on that note, I think a WP:AYITI (HT-Wikipedia) would be able to satisfy all the Haitian Creole needs among Haiti-articles, while attracting participation in those fluent or knowledgeable of the language. Cut and paste move

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Talk:Jean-Baptiste Chavannes (soldier) a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Talk:Jean-Baptiste Chavannes. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 19:48, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for bringing that to my attention GeoffreyT2000, that complete slipped my mind when moving the talk page. Well the good news is that there wasn't much history there to begin with. Savvyjack23 (talk) 02:44, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

Dessalines

Hi, in the article Jean-Jacques Dessalines, you've changed "Haitian tradition holds that Dessalines was transported to Saint-Domingue as a slave, but most historians believe that he was born in Saint-Domingue to enslaved African parents" into "Dessalines was born in Guinea and transported to Saint-Domingue as a slave", but later in the same section it still states that "his region of origin in Africa, are not known". Perhaps you could rewrite that as well with valid sources, seeing that the Caribbean is your "primary focus". Thanks in advance. TherasTaneel (talk) 03:00, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

The term Quisqueya

Dear Savvyjack23, It is clear you have been monitoring the disambiguation page, "Quisqueya." It is also clear that previous contributors have mentioned, repeatedly, that the information on this page is incorrect. I want to confirm their statements; what they have mentioned in their summaries.

Pedro Martir was the first person to use the term as one of three terms for the island of Haiti or Hispaniola. He took that information from what he thought people arriving from the other side of the Atlantic have told him. There is a consensus among specialists that this is not a true indigenous name. See, for example what historian David Geggus says:

"Las Casas's firsthand experience of the island dated from nearly a decade later, but his knowledge of the Taino was probably unrivaled among his European ropean contemporaries. Neither he nor the chronicler Oviedo used the term "Quizquella," which some modern scholars consider bogus.' Nevertheless, from the sixteenth to the early eighteenth century, European writers tended to record "Quisqueya" and "Haiti" as alternative aboriginal names for Hispaniola.'y In the course of the eighteenth century, however, "Haiti" began to emerge as the preferred of the two terms. Raynal did not mention "Quisqueya" at all in the three editions of his Histoire des deux Indes.80 Nor did Antonio Alcedo in his Diccionario of 1786. Moreau de Saint-Wry and Sanchez Valverde, also writing in the 1780s, mentioned the two alternatives but tended to privilege 'Haiti.'" David Patrick Geggus. Haitian Revolutionary Studies (Kindle Locations 3420-3423). Kindle Edition.

Ginetta Calendario supports Geggus claims and to cement the case further, provides more sources from Dominican scholars like Emilio Tejera: See, See Ginetta Calendario's, Black Behind the Ear, page 281, Note 125. Here is the link to the book in Google Books: https://books.google.com/books?id=WKZhl3N6uiMC

I would gladly discuss this further and/or make the appropiate changes. The point is, this page contains incorrect information.Historian (talk) 18:40, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Yes Dennishidalgo, I would have to agree with you 100%, that is in fact the "Quisqueya" name was not an indigenous name used. Any changes that you may make I will support and reassure my thoughts on its talk page as well. We have old sources agreeing with newer ones, so it is more or less undisputable. Thank you for bringing this subject to light and involving me in it as well. Cheers! Savvyjack23 (talk) 22:10, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your support, Savvyjack23.

Just a sidenote: I love what you have been doing, and would like to share my thoughts about a minor point in your user-page because I think you would appreciate it: the words "lesser" and "developed" relate closely to a "superior" point of view. Hope you continue your hard work. Cheers, Historian (talk) 23:24, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Yes, Dennishidalgo you're logic absolutely makes sense. I am surprised I hadn't seen that sooner, thanks. I also appreciate you're kind words and your contributions. We need more fact-driven, logical neutralists as contributors like yourself. Savvyjack23 (talk) 01:27, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

No, they are not the same Wgolf. One plays in France, the other Cameroon which is in Africa. They are also distinguished by the accent mark in the French club. Savvyjack23 (talk) 12:50, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Request for Admin's process and the Caribbean/PR's Wikiproject

Considering the level of involvement you have in WP, I wonder about your thoughts on the Request for Admin's process and why it seems that few of the editors linked to the Caribbean projects are usually involved (if any). Would it make a difference? Thanks for your view. Caballero/Historiador 15:03, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Steph Lecor

Hello Savvyjack23,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Steph Lecor for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. TheLongTone (talk) 16:38, 1 February 2016 (UTC)

"I've noticed that you have been consistently taking this approach with other articles since you joined Wikipedia in the second half of 2015."

What do you mean by this? Linguist111 (talk) 18:36, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Yes Linguist111, you've been tagging pages with proposed deletions without a simple notability check first. Example: JSTOR, (Google)News, (Google)Books, etc. If one of these outlets can verify notability which "news" did of said article, there would be no reason to tag in this manner opposed to a verification template. I will assume that you were operating in good faith and this one may have slipped through your review process. In any case, please try to be certain before tagging up a debate. In this case, I managed to verify her notability in all but three seconds. Savvyjack23 (talk) 18:53, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
Okay, I will check the articles I have nominated and for the ones with enough notability, I will close the deletion discussions. I'm sorry for my mistake, I promise I will be more careful in the future. Linguist111 (talk) 18:48, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
I appreciate the apology Linguist111; you were only doing what you felt was right. Some other editors I have come across lately did not have the same intentions. For that, I truly know that Wikipedia will greatly benefit from your presence. Feel free to reach out to me anytime, with questions or concerns about anything. Cheers. Federation logos

Oiyarbepsy, Marchjuly, IncredibleSE, Explicit, glad we have finally reached a consensus on Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2016 February 7#File:Federation_Haitienne_de_Football.png. Now, does this apply just to this team's federation or to them all? If it does, I haven't noticed. Savvyjack23 (talk) 02:58, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

Well, the files for discussion page only specifically addressed Haiti, but the same principle applies to every other country's teams. The idea is that the full organization can display the logo, but child organizations should only display the logo specific to that child organization. For (somewhat literal) example, a national youth team logo can display the logo for the national youth team, but not for the nation adult team. Oiyarbepsy (talk) 04:20, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
I agree with Oiyarbepsy posted in that the same should apply to all national teams in principle, and that the federation/association is generally considered to be the parent entity while the individual teams are considered to be child entities in such cases. Moreover, the same applies not only to sports teams, but to any organization, etc. where such a relationship exists. Wikipedia currently has over 5,000,000 articles, and almost 900,000 files have been uploaded, many of which are images of some kind. I've seen some posts saying that there are over 500,000 non-free images being used on Wikipedia, with more probably being added each day. So, just as not every article added to Wikipedia is going to satisfy WP:BASIC, not every non-free image being used is going to satisfy WP:NFCC. Obvious violations, such as WP:NFCC#9/WP:NFCC#10c can be removed per WP:NFCCE/WP:UP#Non-free images, but there are many cases which do require further discussion at WP:FFD. Sure it's possible to randomly click on any article and find a non-free image being inappropriately used, but just because other stuff exists doesn't mean there is an automatic entitlement to use similar non-free images in similar articles. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:35, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

WikiCup 2016 March newsletter (update)

Disambiguation link notification for March 16

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Communal section, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Doland. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
