Janko de Beer, which you submitted to Articles for creation, has been created.[edit]

Good morning,

I recently noticed that a topic I created more than a year ago, now got deleted. Can you please help with this? A lot of research went into the topic at the time based on valued and reputable sources. I still believe that the topic adds value to Wikipedia's goals and mission.

Please assist me with the restoration thereof, if more editing needs to be done I am open to all suggestions.

Best regards, Annie

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021[edit]

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello SL93,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Request on 05:15:41, 16 September 2021 for assistance on AfC submission by Fatlady903[edit]

Hello,

I know its been over two months, but I've just completely forgot to reach out. I have a question about why my submission was declined. The reasoning was because my sources were found to be unreliable. My question is why are they unreliable? The major source that the article cites is part of an 8 volume encyclopedic archive of dominican art history written by a well known dominican painter and art historian. For easier referencing, the ISBN is 978-99934-913-1-6. I'm curious as to what is unreliable? The other two sources cited were from a reputable news source and a book about a comparative study between caribbean cities (ISBN: 978-607-9275-36-5 for referencing). Thanks,

Fatlady903 (talk) 05:15, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Fatlady903: That wasn't the decline reason. It was "This submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources". I will approve it if you can add citations to the last paragraph. SL93 (talk) 05:17, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, okay now I understand. I've added the proper citations and resubmitted it just now. Also this is my first time interacting with a talk page so I don't know if I am replying to your message right. Let me know if there are any other drawbacks in the article. Thank you.

Fatlady903 (talk) 06:04, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Fatlady903: I approved the article. SL93 (talk) 06:07, 16 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Prep sets[edit]

Hey SL93, I'm sure you've been around at DYK much longer than I have, but I was told (and my experience has borne out) to leave a couple of slots in the last prep set open just in case a special occasion hook needs to be kicked in at the last second (or if an image slot hook has a copyright problem and needs to be moved out), and since it's easier to build whole prep sets at a time, i usually just leave the last prep set blank. I'm open to other reasoning, though—how do you want to approach this? theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (they/them) 00:38, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Theleekycauldron I only filled it because the queues are in a backlog and we should be moving back to two a day soon per the DYK talk page. There is no need to do anything. SL93 (talk) 00:50, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
we're back to 120 already? oh boy, that won't be fun for the admins. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (they/them) 00:56, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Theleekycauldron It was at 121 and now at 119. The person who brought it up didn't ping any admins. I was about to, but I'm not sure who to ping. SL93 (talk) 00:58, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Welp, we're switched now—we'll be a lot busier, won't we theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (they/them) 04:53, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request on 09:59:50, 26 September 2021 for assistance on AfC submission by Mivida2021[edit]

Hi I just submitted my article for the second time with added references from published sources like newspapers and e magazines.Yet the draft wasn't accepted. There were few citations too but my draft isn't passable yet. Can you kindly help me understand what's gone wrong again? I really need assistance in this to make my article accepted in wiki. can you help. my kind regards. Thank you.

Mivida2021 (talk) 09:59, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Mivida2021: The article is almost completely unreferenced. SL93 (talk) 14:22, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Breakdown of the sources -
The first source only has "Canadian Chamber of Commerce: www.cancham.org.eg"
The second source is a press release so it is an unreliable source.
The third source only has one sentence of coverage about the organization in a three sentence article.
The fourth source is workable.
The fifth source only mentions the organization for a few sentences.
The sixth source is a home page.
The seventh source is a home page.
The eighth source is workable.
The ninth source doesn't have significant coverage of the organization. SL93 (talk) 14:22, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Add at least one more source with significant coverage (companies and organizations are held to a higher standard for references that have significant coverage), source the article correctly, and remove all promotional language - "located in the heart of Cairo", "majorly working", "defined achievements", "They believe in the development of small businesses", etc. SL93 (talk) 14:22, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. This is made clear. I will work on it. I have resubmitted it with another reliable source i could find. Not sure if you could look into it. but if possible can you say if the edit is fine to be passable. Would really appreciate if you could guide a bit further if possible. Thanks in advance. Hi SL93[edit]

Hi, I wrote an article about Dbvisualizer and got this: "This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject. Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia."

What can I do to get this approved? Thank you

Best regards Hagelin-Linder — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hagelin-Linder (talkcontribs) 15:59, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hagelin-Linder Source review.
First reference - It is a description of the software with a download link and user reviews.
Second - A Disqus blog = unreliable source when the author isn't notable in that field.
Third - It is not independent of the subject and is a download page.
Fourth - It's a profile of the creator so it is not an independent source. It doesn't even verify the sentence that it is used as a reference on.
Fifth - It is not independent of the subject because it is from BEA Systems which partnered with DbVisualizer.
Sixth - A list of alternatives is not significant coverage.
Seventh - It doesn't mention the software.
Eighth - Unreliable blog.
Ninth - A simple description page for the software. Also not independent coverage.
Tenth - Not independent coverage.
Eleventh - YouTube. Not even from a reliable publisher.
Twelth - The official website = not independent.
The references are not even sourcing much of the content that it proclaims to be sourcing. SL93 (talk) 03:28, 23 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Chestnut Man page[edit]

Hi SL93, you recently approved my submission of the draft for The Chestnut Man. While this submission was pending (I had to resubmit it twice), another editor created the same page, under the name The Chestnut Man (TV series). By this point, that page is more developed than the one I created, but essentially, there exists a duplicate of the same page. What is the easiest way to merge the two? Should I create a redirect, or is there a better way to go about it? Thank you. Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 01:52, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Revirvlkodlaku I moved the article back to draft space and tagged the redirect for speedy deletion. Once that happens, I will rename the other article to The Chestnut Man. Though I am wondering how long you knew of the other article. SL93 (talk) 02:04, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have sent you a note about a page you reviewed[edit]

yeesh, this automatic note thing sucks. give me a second to rewrite: hi! small question about the Spotify Kids article: I'm a little new to this, but I'm not seeing super sturdy sourcing—? business insider and tech crunch are "no consensus" at WP:RSP (the latter being specifically noted as less useful for notability), MakeUseOf isn't even notable enough for an entry, much less reputable, and I can't see how Adweek is reliable either. The verge is reliable, so that's some moderately in-depth coverage—what am I missing here? Help is appreciated theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (they/them) 04:10, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Theleekycauldron Odd that it notified me. I marked it as reviewed due to there being no consensus of TechCrunch and Business Insider being reliable. I would say that Adweek is reliable based on its Wikipedia article and this. You could tag place a notability tag on it and get these comments to the creator. SL93 (talk) 04:27, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think of it as like AfD. A no consensus close defaults to keep. I also don't see any use in tagging the article when many sources like this can be found within seconds on Google. SL93 (talk) 04:37, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
oh, interesting. I always thought no consensus on an AfD defaults to keep, and no consensus on sourcing defaults to unreliable. but the variety source is solid, yeah—no reason to tag when the sourcing is out there. Thanks for the explanation! theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (they/them) 04:40, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Theleekycauldron I think it of that way personally, partially due to TechCrunch being used as a reference in thousands of articles. SL93 (talk) 04:42, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request on 22:40:37, 4 January 2022 for assistance on AfC submission by UNEndViolence[edit]

Hi there, Thank you in advance for the help. We prepared and submitted a draft page for our office, but it hasn't been published because it is-apparently- written more like an advertisement than a page. Interestingly enough, most of the content was previously published in a different page (and accepted as was). So we would like to seek your advice on how to make the above page "publishable". We tried our best to describe the activities and work of the offie-we don't sell any products or aim/exist to generate any profit, so we it is not clear to us why the page was not accepted.

Thank you very much in advance for the help.

Hi SL93, sorry I never got around to responding to your query about FAC before you removed it. Did you get some answers to your question elsewhere? Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 11:37, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Amakuru I removed it because I was getting a bit frustrated with the FAC process. My opinion has changed for the better after receiving a third support while I was sleeping. Sorry for removing it, it had nothing to do with you and just had to do with my frustration. I'm interested in any answers that you can provide again. SL93 (talk) 18:50, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wellbee[edit]

Not sure the right hook is being used there. CDC is a term that probably only Americans will understand and we have lost the year for context. It is also not one of the approved hooks. What about "that in the 1960s, Wellbee (pictured) encouraged Americans to be vaccinated against polio and diphtheria? Philafrenzy (talk) 09:37, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Philafrenzy My only edit to the hook was changing America to United States. Theleekycauldron is the correct person to talk to although the year is at the end of the hook. SL93 (talk) 12:54, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Philafrenzy: Hi there, sorry about that! I've tweaked it to ... that in the 1960s, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)'s Wellbee (pictured) encouraged Americans to get vaccinated against polio and diphtheria? I just don't want people to look at "Centers for Disease Control" and not put together that it's the CDC, since lots of Americans will respond to the CDC much more than the full name. Does that work for you? theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (they/she) 13:05, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, wouldn't it be a lot simpler as ...that in the 1960s, Wellbee (pictured) encouraged Americans to get vaccinated against polio and diphtheria? Philafrenzy (talk) 13:44, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging Theleekycauldron just in case. SL93 (talk) 16:05, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Re-pinging Theleekycauldron as we still seem to have the clunky version. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:52, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Philafrenzy: ah, right, sorry. My thought is that the CDC is a pretty prominent organization now—people may find it enticing to learn more about the history of the agency. I happen think that upshot's worth the extra characters, at least as far as view count goes. What do you think? theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 15:55, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just that the subject of the hook is Wellbee not the CDC and readers can follow up on the CDC if they want to in the article and its links. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:12, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. do we ever put the image on the left as that might work better here? Philafrenzy (talk) 16:15, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Philafrenzy: oh, sorry, I don't mean that people will want to click on the CDC—of course, they should be following up after clicking through to Wellbee, but I think the CDC's grabbiness as a spotlighted (sometimes not uncontroversially) government agency is an upshot as far as bolded article clicks go. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 16:24, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That makes four links in the hook, with the CDC coming immediately before the actual subject of the hook. I am sure it will get plenty of attention without adding the Centers for Disease Control's immediately before, as it has a striking image. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:29, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Philafrenzy: sorry that this one slipped my mind, it's in queue now—should probably take it to WT:DYK. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 16:32, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What about the positioning of the image? Philafrenzy (talk) 16:34, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, I've never seen an image be positioned at the left as far as I've been here (nor from checking all the archives)—doesn't make sense to misalign the bullet points to me theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 16:35, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please, provide a few links of other early 20th-century American film articles that have been declined for the reason that you gave.[edit]

You declined my draft article with the comment "Declining submission: nn - Submission is about a topic not yet shown to meet general notability guidelines (be more specific if possible." Has any other American film from 1929 (or the 1920s) been declined for your reason of "a topic not yet shown to meet general notability guidelines...?" Aren't all films released for commercial public viewing (in the 1920s) automatically meet "general notability? Aren't American films of the 1920s a "topic" of notability? I have viewed many film articles, which look just like mt draft article, yet they have not been declined. Please, provide a few links of other early 20th-century American film articles that have been declined for the reason that you gave. [[1]] --Ooligan (talk) 18:21, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ooligan I refuse to look through my AFC declines for 1920s films due it being unnecessary. "Aren't all films released for commercial public viewing (in the 1920s) automatically meet "general notability? Aren't American films of the 1920s a "topic" of notability?" - No and depends on shown coverage. The relevant notability guideline is WP:NF. There might be sources out there, but it is up to you to find them. " I have viewed many film articles, which look just like mt draft article, yet they have not been declined." Like what? Did they even go through AFC? There are tons of bad quality articles on Wikipedia in the hundreds that no one has gotten around to nominating for deletion. Take a look at this category for an example. SL93 (talk) 19:39, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Just now saw your recent expansion of and DYK listing for Tom Grogan - great work! I much enjoyed the novel when I read it about 10 years ago.--Milowenthasspoken 20:32, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, very nice! I mean to get around to Colonel Carter of Cartersville (1891) someday if no one else does. It was a legitimate big hit in its day, also became a play and silent film.--Milowenthasspoken 21:09, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats on this fine accomplishment! When I had my first FAC—"Daisy"—passed, Twofingered Typist called it "a real accomplishment". That was one of my proudest moment on Wikipedia! Thanks for your work! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 04:42, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Kavyansh.Singh Thank you. This is the first time I have tried for FA and I have been an editor for quite a while. It's also great that the FA nomination by theleekycauldron passed. In comparison, I started editing on Wikipedia when I was a teenager and I didn't attempt a featured article until recently and I'm 28 now (going on 29 this year...I accept gift cards I'm wondering when the bot will update my nomination to FA. SL93 (talk) 06:15, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
wait, it finally passed? that's awesome, congrats!! and in 20 days flat, too :) The bot usually updates at midnight and noon UTC, so shuold be about 6 hours (those were a very long six hours when my FA was promoted, too)—gotta wonder why they don't use a semi-automatic script for this? Anyways, congrats again—great work! theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 06:18, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm the type of person that doesn't know patience. The FA process felt excruciatingly slow. SL93 (talk) 06:22, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, given that the longest successful FAC—WP:FAC/Operation Infinite Reach/archive1—took just 127 days to be closed, I think 20 is not bad. – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 08:43, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I just saw it was promoted: great!! It was fast, meaning I planned to comment and didn't get to it ;) - When do you want it to appear? asap? then use WP:TFAR ... specific date within the next 12 months? same. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:52, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ping[edit]

MichaelQSchmidt If you ever log in and see this ping, whether on my talk page or in its archive, I would like you to know that I miss you being on Wikipedia. You were my go to editor for Wikipedia issues years ago for a long time. After you became less and less active over the next 5 years on Wikipedia after your successful RFA, I never had any such go to person. You are the one who made my time and edits on Wikipedia improve so much since then. I'm pinging you here because you haven't been responding to people's messages on your talk page for a long time so maybe you might just see this ping and respond. A cup of tea for you![edit]

I hope you will reconsider, though please take all the time you need in the meantime. I think you are an extraodinary editor who has given a lot to the community and your departure would be a great loss to Wikipedia. DanCherek (talk) 18:12, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
DanCherek I will stay. I didn't think that leaving Wikipedia would be so hard with editors continuing to leave advice for me. That does show that people on here care. I just wasn't expecting any such responses and that was wrong of me. SL93 (talk) 19:26, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
