Hello SL93,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Hello, 

I know its been over two months, but I've just completely forgot to reach out. I have a question about why my submission was declined. The reasoning was because my sources were found to be unreliable. My question is why are they unreliable? The major source that the article cites is part of an 8 volume encyclopedic archive of dominican art history written by a well known dominican painter and art historian. For easier referencing, the ISBN is 978-99934-913-1-6. I'm curious as to what is unreliable? The other two sources cited were from a reputable news source and a book about a comparative study between caribbean cities (ISBN: 978-607-9275-36-5 for referencing). Thanks,

Prep sets[edit]

Hey SL93, I'm sure you've been around at DYK much longer than I have, but I was told (and my experience has borne out) to leave a couple of slots in the last prep set open just in case a special occasion hook needs to be kicked in at the last second (or if an image slot hook has a copyright problem and needs to be moved out), and since it's easier to build whole prep sets at a time, i usually just leave the last prep set blank. Breakdown of the sources -
The first source only has "Canadian Chamber of Commerce: www.cancham.org.eg"
The second source is a press release so it is an unreliable source.
The third source only has one sentence of coverage about the organization in a three sentence article.
The fourth source is workable.
The fifth source only mentions the organization for a few sentences.
The sixth source is a home page.
The seventh source is a home page.
The eighth source is workable.

Hi, I wrote an article about Dbvisualizer and got this: "This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject. Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia."

Hagelin-Linder Source review.
First reference - It is a description of the software with a download link and user reviews.
Second - A Disqus blog = unreliable source when the author isn't notable in that field.
Third - It is not independent of the subject and is a download page.
Fourth - It's a profile of the creator so it is not an independent source. It doesn't even verify the sentence that it is used as a reference on.
Fifth - It is not independent of the subject because it is from BEA Systems which partnered with DbVisualizer.
Sixth - A list of alternatives is not significant coverage.
Seventh - It doesn't mention the software.
Eighth - Unreliable blog.
Ninth - A simple description page for the software. Also not independent coverage.
Tenth - Not independent coverage.
Eleventh - YouTube. Not even from a reliable publisher.
Twelth - The official website = not independent.

WikiCup 2021 November newsletter[edit]

The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax! Our Champion this year is Botswana The Rambling Man (submissions), who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. It was a very competitive round; seven of the finalists achieved over 1000 points in the round (enough to win the 2019 contest), and three scored over 3000 (enough to win the 2020 event). Our 2021 finalists and their scores were:

The Chestnut Man page[edit]

Hi SL93, you recently approved my submission of the draft for The Chestnut Man. While this submission was pending (I had to resubmit it twice), another editor created the same page, under the name The Chestnut Man (TV series). By this point, that page is more developed than the one I created, but essentially, there exists a duplicate of the same page. What is the easiest way to merge the two? Wellbee[edit]

Not sure the right hook is being used there. CDC is a term that probably only Americans will understand and we have lost the year for context. It is also not one of the approved hooks. Ooligan I refuse to look through my AFC declines for 1920s films due it being unnecessary.
