April 2014[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Epicgenius. I wanted to let you know that I undid one or more of your recent contributions to Banknotes of the Australian dollar because it did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Sorry for marking your edit "test/vandalism". I looked at it again, and it turns out that it's legitimate. You should add a reliable source for your changes, though. Epicgenius (talk) 18:18, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there[edit]

I noticed your post on User talk:71.239.172.110 and just wanted to say: yes, people here are a bit harsh. They were a bit rude. But I think they meant well.

I think what they were trying to get across is that your writing could use some work, not that you're dumb. I encourage you to read Wikipedia's field guide, Wikipedia:Etiquette, that helps avoid some of the misunderstandings people have with each other on the Internet.

Sometimes, we just have to accept that one edit wasn't that great, and maybe someone else can fix it; other times maybe your edit was really that great, they're wrong, and a complete idiot who just can't appreciate it (but don't tell them that).

Don't worry about how you sound as long as what you contribute adds something. That's what we really need here. That and teamwork. Many editors (myself included) spell-check and copyedit articles. We actually have a whole group set up for that. Please assume the best of 71.239.172.110 and try to respond calmly and peacefully, and avoid comments like As for my "Poor English"!!! Well that is just moronic. Those comments will just get them "fired up" and annoyed at you.

Peacefully, Meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 04:48, 29 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(You replied on my page, and that's fine)
I realize it's been a while and I haven't responded; I guess I've been busy.
I'm sorry you received that comment from him; he kinda was right about the grammar stuff (I can explain if you like) but it doesn't mean he should be a jerk. English is a hard language with many confusing rules that often contradict themselves.
Anyway, I'm going to try to keep an eye on him. I filtered a list of his contributions to only editors' talk pages and saw what appears to be almost 100 comments, almost all of which are rude. I almost reported him, but decided to give him another chance.
He seems to be getting the hang of being polite: one of his earliest edit summaries was

"Stop f*cking up call-out tables on the articles, please and thank you."

and his latest is simply

"Please stop switching the names/information on the tables. The edits were not constructive, and this was clearly not accidental."

So it looks like he's catching on.
But if he returns to discourteous behavior I'm going to report him to the administrators. Feel free to message me or report him if he responds inexcusably rude again. Take care! Meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 01:49, 8 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
