Mass in Kg weight in Pounds?[edit]

Never heard of this. We weight people in Kg up where I live. We rarely use pounds (just the old people). In the USA I know the nonscientific us pounds and the scientific us Kg. co-authors[edit]

Apropos of your edit at Richard Watson (singer) I had no idea that "coauthors" was now deprecated. I have put this field in dozens, probably hundreds, of articles. Is there any way of replacing the lot or is it a matter of remembering to change them when next visiting each article? Tangentially, following what I find the prevalent practice in printed references, I prefer the second author to be John Smith, rather than Smith, John. It's not a matter of great importance, and I see the WP:cite book page allows for this. I'll go down that route in future, and am obliged to you for raising the matter. Personal attack

Your copyediting is okay sometimes. But shouldn't, as a copyeditor, you always make articles better? Or should we just say everyone is prone to make mistakes? Your copyediting over at Adolescent sexuality in the United States leaves much to be desired. And your copyedits elsewhere consist of you making unnecessary, sometimes unnecessarily elaborate, changes. You overtag and overuse blockquotes. I also think that when one or more editors reject your copyedits, you should just back off. If your copyedits are truly an improvement, then discuss them on the talk page when rejected. But try more often to see why others don't or might not appreciate your copyediting. I stopped using blockquotes after Adolescent sexuality in the United States almost entirely. I do use them in the editing window to save from clutter, but that makes absolutely no difference on rendered text.
Are you signed out, a sockpuppet, or a newbie? You the person at Fuck who reverted me twice?
And yes, I tag. I also consistently remove tags. Tagging is important, you realize. It's how I find articles to edit. Otherwise you have to click 'Random Page' -- which I do -- and it becomes tedious. Much easier for sparse commentary for willing editors.
I never claimed to perfect Adolescent sexuality in the US. That was long ago, and it sucked to begin with. It still sucks; I didn't improve the tone of it, I fixed punctuation and the like. I've taken a break from it because I felt I was spinning my wheels; I admit it was a big article for a newcomer to tackle, but you can't just generalize an entire editor for a single article. I also utilize talk pages.

I never triumph over others when I correct their mistakes. I aim to improve content. I'm also not a retard. Watch your tone. You read 'Bite the newbies' ever?

I'm saying it because your copyediting is often messy. I think you know that some editors started out as IP editors watching others edit, that they learned the ways of Wikipedia by watching and/or occasionally editing before starting to edit Wikipedia regularly. No, I'm not a signed-out sockpuppet. If I have a registered account, communicating with you on your talk page without signing in does not make me a WP:Sockpuppet. No, I'm not Til Eulenspiegel. Tagging is important. Overtagging is not. For example, if an article or section of an article has a big tag on it that says that additional references are needed, it is overkill to then add citation-needed tags for each unsourced statement. I was actually typing up a response to you before Til Eulenspiegel even reverted you. And this[1] is not a WP:Dummy edit. A WP:Dummy edit does not change the text that way. What you added there is an invisible note. To make a WP:Dummy edit, the only thing you'd have to do, for example, is space a heading a bit (without making a WP:Whitespace). Okay, I recant. You are not a sockpuppet. No offense intended; you wrote as if you have been here many times before. Passive observers do exist. I seriously doubt you've followed Wiki more than I have, but that's not my point.

My point is -- seriously, can you be more specific? Fuck had neither an article tag, nor a section tag. It was a former featured article that I wanted to refurbish, and that's not a crime. "Messy" and "get it together" is not constructive criticism - those are insults. What have thread you been following? Have my edits at Death pissed you off? Me fixing the badly-written Akathisia? Me backing off at ASCII art when another editor reverted my edit? My tendency to defer to others' opinions? Me preserving the links at Barack Obama? Me adding (in Spanish) on North America and adding quotes? Me politely proposing a new system at Abuse because it didn't make sense? Fixing Fall Out Boy's links? Making redirects and pulling together Antidepressant? The silent corrections I've made to hundreds of articles? If you have issues with Adolescent Sexuality, why tell me now? Are you wanting me to change something in the article, 3 months after I edited it? "Something to be desired" -- I'm not even working on it.

I have definitely followed Wikipedia more than you. That should be obvious by the fact that I know more about editing it than you. Your edits are often messy. Saying so is constructive criticism to me since I want you to improve and take the time to discuss your copyedits when people object to them. An/a[edit]

As far as I know version, an is used mainly before vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u)[2]. And SSRI (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) doesn't begin with one. I think you're wrong here. Alex^{discussion ★} 23:51, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I see what you mean. However, S has an "invisible" vowel sound—an "E" at the beginning—so it breaks this rule. Anytime you have two vowel sounds in English you need to punctuate them with a short stop using a consonant, regardless of how it's written. Most cases are words beginning with a, e, i, o, or u, but there are exceptions. Other examples—"an MRI", "an NBA game", "an NGO", "an X-ray", "an SUV"—might be more familiar. It doesn't make sense when looking at the words, only when reading them out loud do you notice.

EDIT: A source of confusion here might be regarding acronyms. If you spell out Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, you precede it with a; if you just use the acronym SSRI, you precede it with an. Thanks for catching & correcting those. I copyedited by hand, so it wasn't a script that was broken; "subst:[anything]" doesn't work within <ref>...</ref> tags for some reason (a MediaWiki code bug maybe?).

Template edits[edit]

Wanted to let you know that I've given you the "template editor" user right, which will allow you to edit pages that have been given "template-editor protection". This won't help with {{Actinium}}, since it's fully protected, but it will enable you to edit many templates that shouldn't be just semiprotected. The user right is quite new and just got consensus a few months ago, so there are lots of templates currently at full protection that need to be downgraded to template-editor protected. In case you wonder — I gave you the right because it's clear that you're making a lot of good edits to templates: it looks like you're exactly the kind of editor for whom this user right was created, since it's meant to ensure that trustworthy people can implement edits to templates instead of having to wait around for editprotected requests to be answered. With this in mind, please continue doing what you have been doing, and if you find a template that's been fully protected because of vulnerability/numerous transclusions, you're welcome to go to RFPP and ask that they be downgraded to template-editor, or removed entirely if they're in a situation like the Actinium template. You're quite welcome. Frankly speaking, you don't meet the criteria :-) Note that the page explicitly permits admins to use other criteria to decide whether an editor's suitable for the userright, so I didn't break any rules even though you don't meet the criteria. At least right now, I can't think of a situation in which I'd grant the right to someone who's recently gotten a behavioral block (except for an accident, e.g. I blocked you when I meant to block someone else), and I definitely wouldn't grant it to someone who's not editing templates. However, you've made tons of template edits since joining in September, and the main reasons for having this feature are to make it easier for people like you and to reduce the number of {{editprotected}} requests, so I've normally granted the right to people who've made a lot of good template edits. Yes. I couldn't perform the move with the redirect in the way. I'm considering taking advantage of "Displaytitle" so the nomenclature fits but they remain convenient typing aids without redirects. Done There was nothing worth keeping in the redirect history, so I just let the system delete it as I moved it, it has automatically created a new redirect at the old name. This admin has worked out why they were there and I knew immediately what the problem was - it did take a bit longer to work out which edit had caused it - not that it mattered! Recent software changes

Pages from Wikimedia sites now load faster in your browser thanks to "module storage", a way for your browser to save data like JavaScript and CSS on your computer to avoid downloading them again. See video. [3]
The code used to show videos has changed. You should be able to play the video on the page, with the play button on top of the video. If you see the play button on the right of the video, or if clicking on the video leads you to the original file, please file a bug or tell User:Bawolff. [4]
The Special:ActiveUsers page will be removed because it's too slow. [5]
The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf11) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on January 16. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on January 28, and all Wikipedia wikis on January 30 (calendar).

Problems

On January 21, Universal Language Selector was turned off on all Wikimedia sites because it makes pages load slowly. If you want to use web fonts, or write in scripts that aren't on your keyboard, you need to add it as an option in your preferences. It will be turned back on when the issues are resolved. [6]
For about 20 minutes on the same day, there were problems with CSS and JavaScript due to high server load.

Future software changes

You can give comments about the new version of "Winter", a proposal to have a fixed toolbar at the top of wiki pages. [7]

Hey, Meteor sandwich yum! I saw your question on the Teahouse and was wondering about it. (In passing, an IP block exemption is what you're looking for, but it's only handed out in very limited circumstances.) Anyway, my question is (and without meaning to pry too much): do you think it'll help to only use TOR some of the time? Even assuming that TOR is a perfect safeguard against surveillance: if you make edits without the protection of TOR, they'll be able to track you based on those unprotected edits, and then they'll be able to link your protected edits to you because they're all associated with the same username. Again, I don't mean to pry, so if this makes you uncomfortable, just say the word and I'll drop it. Your question just got me to thinking, and since it's pretty much off-topic, I didn't want to clutter up the Teahouse question with it. @Writ Keeper: Don't mind at all, just will phrase this very openly.

There is a point to using it even occasionally, because in order for me to be traced, a human would have to connect the dots (as most traffic is just recorded on government servers to be analyzed indefinitely later at their leisure). Although it's a security vulnerability to pass traffic both unencrypted and through TOR simultaneously, and for an adversary to notice the traffic in real-time; only using TOR some of the time is not so much a risk (possible, but not probable).

Also, by editing under TOR I help secure others' Internet traffic every time I edit a page (also another reason I want an IPBE). So even if I'm traced, others aren't, and I do good collaterally.

The Vector search box was changed to fix old display and accessibility issues; for example, you can now use full-text search even if you have disabled JavaScript. Please report any problems you see. Problems

On February 3, all wikis were broken for about an hour due to a traffic balancing issue. [38]

On February 9, Wikimedia Labs was broken for about 2 hours due to an XFS file system problem. [60]

On the same day, for about 20 minutes there were issues with page loading due to database problems.
There were issues with page loading between 21:00 UTC on February 13 and 11:00 UTC on February 14 for users in Europe. It was due to a cache server problem.
On February 14, all sites were broken for about 15 minutes for users in Southeast Asia, Oceania and the western part of North America. It was due to problems with cache servers.

VisualEditor news

The link tool now tells you when you're linking to a disambiguation or redirect page. [62]

Recent software changes

The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf15) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on February 20. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on February 25, and all Wikipedia wikis on February 27 (calendar).
The new search tool (CirrusSearch) was added to the Italian Wikiquote and all Wikiversity projects. Users can now enable it in their Beta options. [68] [69]
The Universal Language Selector was enabled on all Wikimedia wikis again. You can enable web fonts in your ULS options (see how).

VisualEditor news

(Regarding the eponymous article)

I'd be more sympathetic to marking that BLP if he was living, but the article says the author of that book died in 2012. I mostly work at trying to do triage on actual BLPs, which is why I fiddled with the tags. Also, I kinda felt like the one in the Refs section was redundant, but *shrug*.

Hello, meteor sandwich yum... I'm todd adams, the real todd adams, owner of newbys, i bought the company from david newby harsh...

I would appreciate if you would put my statements back on the wiki page! Or take the Newbys wiki page off!

i'm the one that was steam rolled by BMI... I'm also the only one in the that has ever won a judgement while fighting BMI... Which BMI didnt like, they in turn sued me again in Federal Court for Copyright Infringement... This went on for a while, we settled because I had no more money to pay lawyers to represent me... I failed miserably representing myself against 4 lawyers from NY, Nashville and locally... I failed in the mediation and was forced to agree to insane terms, in due time i failed to comply with and was ordered to pay even more $$$ to BMI lawyers... All under the veil of secrecy, not to divulge any information to the public!

I spent time yesterday writing the FACTS in my incident! What happened to me, as doing business as Newbys... This was and is what happened in the controversies of Newbys!

I would appreciate if you would put my statements back on the wiki page! Or take the Newbys wiki page off! As there's no reason to tell / post one side of the story! BMI is worse than organized crime, the Mafia! Stealing from the public billions of dollars, not paying to artists their due... as they have no idea what songs are actually played in businesses! the smallest % scales collected from private and public companies are paid to the highest of the level of artists and keeping the majority to line their pockets, buy the most expensive parcels of property, throw lavish parties and retain the best, most expensive lawyers / bribe officials... this and the other license companies have no room for our World! Here in Memphis, TN they threatened to sue the public library per the music they let students and the public listen to, to the tune of over $20K the City was forced to pay BMI or go to court, costing the City even more $$$... One City out of all the Cities in America... $20K is a drop in the bucket they steal / rob / threaten everyone!

You will make a big difference to the quality of information by adding reliable sources. Sourcing anatomy articles is essential and makes a big difference to the quality of articles. And, while you're at it, why not use a book to source information, which can source multiple articles at once!
We try and use a standard way of arranging the content in each article. That layout is here. These headings let us have a standard way of presenting the information in anatomical articles, indicate what information may have been forgotten, and save angst when trying to decide how to organise an article. That said, this might not suit every article. If in doubt, be bold!
Lastly, why not try and strive to create a good article! Anatomical articles are often small in scope, have available sources, and only a limited amount of research available that is readily presentable!

The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf16) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on February 27. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on March 4, and all Wikipedia wikis on March 6 (calendar).
When users enable web fonts by default, Universal Language Selector will now log if they don't have fonts to display pages correctly. This information will be used by developers to improve font support in the future. Read more about missing fonts. [83]

Hi @229amini:

The simple answer is yes, you should always start an article by saying what they did and are famous for. A lot of articles are written every day, and to prevent Wikipedia from being crowded with lots of articles that nobody wants to read, we clean them out. Wgolf was only guessing that the person wasn't important enough to belong here. Another thing to prevent them from being deleted is to include a reference of some kind—it doesn't matter if it's messy or something, just a URL you enclose in <ref></ref> tags will be enough to show they matter. The template {{Newpage}} can show you're still actively working on it, and not to delete it.

Sorry you didn't get a chance to finish it.

Was Mostafa Amini an important person? Wikipedia judges whether people should be in this encyclopedia or not by Wikipedia:Notability (people).

Quarterly focus - Where to edit?

On any given week we have at least 4-10 editors making significant contributions to our articles, with probably more than double this making minor edits. As an editor, I am often wondering: with so many articles, where to start? There is so much to be done (as always, on Wikipedia!), and I aim here to provide a comprehensive list of venues within our project. If I've missed any, please let us know on the WikiProject Anatomy talk page.

An editor might edit:

By importance. A user can use our assessment table to view articles by their importance and class. The vital articles project provides a list of designated 'Vital articles' for Wikipedia.
By popularity. One way to edit is to edit the most popular pages -- the majority of these need help, and editing is sure to bring benefit to many users.
By need. There is always cleanup that needs to be done, whether commenting on mergers, adding infoboxes or adding images. A cleanup list of all tagged articles is now available here: [138]
By interest. A series of inter-project categories has been developed to help facilitate inter-Wiki and inter-professional collaboration. These categories sort our articles into organs, system, gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and several other categories. This should offer a buffet of articles for any interested editors! See here for more details.
By topic. Wikipedia's anatomical categories may provide impetus, as may editing a suite of related-articles, using a parent article such as ear for direction. A collection of series are slowly being rolled-out, including one for epithelia and for articles about the gastrointestinal wall, which also act as groups of topics. Templates, as documented on our main page, provide a similar categorisation.
By demand. Discussions relating to Anatomy are frequent occurrences on the talk pages for WPMED and WP:ANATOMY. Such topics almost always cry out for more editing.
By recent changes. One way to choose a destination for editing is to check the recent changes, revert vandalism, integrate/source edits, or generally collaborate in improving articles that are receiving contributions from other editors. This can be found in the here.
By chance. A user is always welcome to improve articles that they randomly 'bump into' by Wiki-surfing or by having bumped for other reasons into a particular article or topic that needs improvement

A7 deletions[edit]

Re this edit: with an A7 deletion, it's best to advise them to approach the deleting admin first (which is usually the best approach in any case). REFUND is mainly intended for uncontroversial PROD and WP:CSD#G13 restorations, rather than for second-guessing admins, and people asking about A7 deletions will normally get referred to the deleting admin, as I have done in this case, so they can start to feel that they are being given the run-around. Thanks for adopting those. I've just discovered that their author, the long-departed Msikma, made yet another variant of the same idea only four months later: {{sticky}}. Much like the post-it templates, it never saw any real uptake and got forgotten. And then, immediately, {{todo2}} and {{todo3}}. Only those two? There were nine todo[N] post-its... (possibly from him, don't have access to deleted contribs). Must have been a very organized person, at any rate.

I plan to adopt them all, as I see some areas for improvement; nobody took down the "under construction" notice on {{todo3}}, parameters could be more uniform between them, and a navbox sidebar might help to group them all (if they don't all get merged into a single template with 50 parameters).

We try and use a standard way of arranging the content in each article. That layout is here. These headings let us have a standard way of presenting the information in anatomical articles, indicate what information may have been forgotten, and save angst when trying to decide how to organise an article. That said, this might not suit every article. If in doubt, be bold!
Why not try and strive to create a good article! Physiology related articles are often small in scope, have available sources, and only a limited amount of research available that is readily presentable!

Hi. It's Redrecks. You left a message about User:71.239.172.110 on my "Talk" page I think it's called?

Anyway the main reason I have come to you, is after reading the message you left, I do understand that some people are a "Bit harsh" and do say something to upset people. Well this User:71.239.172.110 DID get me upset.

I noticed on her page, the many, many people have left messages for her/him/ telling this person that they are not being very nice at all. And that this User is leaving nasty messages left, right and centre. She has also been banned before for being nasty.

I assume she will leave me another message as I have just changed yet another of her spelling mistakes, which is what she had a problem with initially. I was taught that any naming word, such as "Ambassador", "Talk Book", a segment of the show called "Test Shoot", all start with capital letters. as anything lower case is just for everyday words? I corrected her spelling of "talk book", "ambassador" and "test shoot", all naming words, with capitals. This is why she has left such a bitter message.

I have NO trouble what-so-ever if someone changes what I write or do. But leaving such a nasty reason in the Edit and then on my page, is just being spiteful. Other's have changed what I have written, but have been nice to me about it, as I have been nice back to them.

Thank you for leaving your message. I do truly understand and are the last person to ever try and cause a fight.

As you might know, I answered at my talkpage. Nothing against you, I understand you tried to improve the discussions in good faith. But time pressure was essential.

Now, more detail. In TfD discussions, the closing admin has great power in concluding. (I am not an admin). When the closing admin finds something wrong in the process of discussion, he/she can declare the whole TfD discussion procedure wrong (faulty). That means, no argument at all is read, and no changes will follow. This happened to me earlier, so I did want to prevent that (it would mean that four discussions would be concluded "idle" without arguments being read). I have met these situations (an admin closing this way). So I wanted to prevent that.

Your edits shuffled the discussions so heavily, that I could fear such an admin action & conclusion.

I see that you've just added User:Kephir/gadgets/rater.js to Wikipedia:User scripts‎. I tried adding this script to my vector.js to use it, but I get an error TypeError: $(uiBox).draggable is not a function upon visiting a page. @Dudemanfellabra: Consider that my fault: I was going off on a limb by adding it to list to begin with. The documentation did say "Rater is currently in a somewhat unstable state; it is advisable to check the preview, raw source editor or refresh the talk page to check whether the tool works correctly. Browsers other than Chromium have not been tested."

Sorry about that. I might re-post the bug on Keφr's page, and think I should pull it off the WP:User scripts page as well until the code is debugged. Hi, re this edit. Your problem at {{Currentlybox}} was that by boldfacing inside the {{Strip whitespace}}, you were hiding the whitespace so that it couldn't be stripped. The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf9) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on June 12. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on June 17, and to all Wikipedias on June 19 (calendar).

VisualEditor news

You can now easily see the target of a link or other information using the context menu. [324]
When you edit a reference, you can now empty it and click the "use an existing reference" button to switch it to re-use another reference. [325] [326]

VisualEditor news

You can now drag-and-drop selections of content, not just files and templates. [343] [344]
When dragging an item, you will now see a line that helps you to drop it. [345] [346]
You can now only move an image to the start of a paragraph, not to the middle of it, so you don't accidentally split it. [347] [348]
You will now be warned if you add wikitext to file captions and references. [349] [350]

Future software changes

You will no longer be able to upload files on wikis that do not have any copyright tags. [351] [352]
CirrusSearch will be enabled as the primary search method on additional 70 new wikis, including Meta-Wiki and Wikimedia Incubator, during the next week. [353]
CirrusSearch results will soon take into account categories, the first paragraph and the wikitext of a page. You will also be able to use regular expressions to search the wikitext. It will take a few days for the changes to be enabled on all wikis. [354]
You will soon be able to watch translations for e-mail notifications without receiving an e-mail when they are reviewed by another translator. [355] [356]

Problems

On June 19, all wikis were broken for about 15 minutes due to a high server load.

The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf12) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on July 3. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on July 8, and to all Wikipedias on July 10 (calendar).
CirrusSearch was enabled on July 1 as the primary search method on 36 new wikis, including the Norwegian (no), Portuguese (pt) and Ukrainian (uk) Wikipedias. [378]
It is now possible to create Atom or RSS feeds for Word of the Day, Word of the Week and similar entries on Wiktionary wikis. [379] [380]

VisualEditor news

The tool that stores information about languages (CLDR) was updated to its latest version. You can still help translate language names into your own language so they can be used in the sidebar and other places. [428]

VisualEditor news

Tablet users visiting the mobile version of Wikimedia wikis will be able to use a special version of VisualEditor starting on July 31. You can test the new tool by choosing the beta version of the mobile view in the Settings menu. Feedback is welcome. [432]
All windows in VisualEditor have now a new design. Main action buttons will always be located in the top bar and will use simple words rather than icons. [433]
You can now easily open links inside the link editor, for example to see their target. [434]

Assessment for WikiProject Computer science[edit]

Hi! Thanks for your assessment effort. It looks like there is a problem with the script "Rater" you're using, because it adds the Template:WikiProject Computer science even if it was already present on the talk page. Here is an example of what you get: Talk:Syntactic sugar. It seems that the "Rater" script does not handle this particular WikiProject correctly, so we should fix it or stop using this script for this WikiProject. But I have no idea how to fix this! Cheers. Quarterly focus - Anatomical terminology

Anatomical terminology is an essential component to all our articles. It is necessary to describe structures accurately and without ambiguity. It can also be extremely confusing and, let's face it, it's likely you too were confused too before you knew what was going on ("It's all Greek to me!" you may have said, fairly accurately).

In the opinion of this editor, it's very important that we try hard to describe anatomy in a way that is both technically accurate and accessible. The majority of our readers are lay readers and will not be fluent in terminology. Anatomy is a thoroughly interesting discipline, but it shouldn't be 'locked away' only to those who are fluent in the lingo – exploring anatomy should not be limited by education, technical-level English fluency, or unfamiliarity with its jargon. Anatomical terminology is one barrier to anatomical literacy.

Here are four ways that we can help improve the readability of our anatomical articles.

Substitute. Use words readers are familiar with -- there is no need to use anatomical terminology unless necessary!
Innervated by

The nerve that supplies X is...
Explain. When using terminology, remember readers will likely not understand what you mean, so consider adding an explanation and providing context. Use wikilinks for terms that a reader may not know.
"The triceps extends the arm" may not be readily understood. A small addition may help the reader:

"The triceps extends the arm, straightening it". Consider:
Separate. Do not use long, complicated sentences. Don't write discursive, long comparisons unless needed. Start with simple information first, then get progressively more complex. Separate information by paragraph and subsection. Bite-sized information is much more easier to digest for readers who don't have a solid anatomical foundation
Eliminate. Not all information is necessary on every article. Hatnotes are a simple and effective way to direct readers to another article. Don't provide long lists of synonyms of names for structures that an article isn't about. If a sentence has been paraphrased to the hilt, consider that several editors are indicating it may need to be simplified.
"The other branches of the trigeminal nerve are the opthalmic nerve (nervus opthalmicus) and mandibular nerve (nervus mandibularis)"

"The other branches of the trigeminal nerve are the opthalmic nerve and mandibular nerve" is much more easily digestible

What's new

A related WikiProject is formed, WikiProject Women's health
Cerebellum, promoted in 2006, receives a long overdue featured article review
Heart and Glomerulus receive a peer review
Our article base explodes from about 10,000 to 12,775, with most new articles being redirects.
Sympathetic nervous system, Autonomic nervous system and Parasympathetic nervous system all receive significant makeover, and cry out for more attention!

What's going on

Should Vermiform appendix be retitled to its more common name (Appendix)? The discussion continues!

How can I contribute?

If you're interested in a topic area, let other editors know by creating a 'drive' in that area
Continue to reword articles in language lay readers can understand
Search Wikimedia commons for high-quality coloured images that can be used to replace some of our older, lower quality images.
Don't forget that anatomy isn't always about gross anatomy! A number of other fields, including articles about embryology and histology ("microanatomy") cry out for attention.

Issue focus - technical changes

This issue was originally going to focus on how far we've come as a project. However, that encouraging news can wait until next issue, as there are simply too many changes going on at the "back end" of our project not to write about. What do I mean by "back end"? I mean changes that are not necessarily visible to readers, but may have a significant impact on the way we edit or on future edits.

Templates

A number of visible changes have been made to our templates. Firstly, the way our templates have been linked together has changed. Previously, this was a small bar with single-letter links. This has been replaced by a light-coloured box contained within all our templates with fully-worded links, which provides links to relevant anatomy and medical templates. This should make life a lot easier, particularly for students and other readers who are struggling with the vastness of anatomical systems and their related diseases and treatments.

As part of this, almost all our templates have been reviewed and cleaned up. The previously confusing colour scheme has been removed and colour standardised. The titles have been simplified. References to "identifiers" in the titles of navigation boxes (such as Gray's Anatomy and Terminologia Anatomica numbers) have been removed. Where possible, the wiki-code of templates has been updated to give a cleaner, more standardised, format that is hopefully more friendly to new editors. The cleanup continues , please feel free to contribute or propose templates which need attention.

Most of our articles have an infobox. Previously, there were 11 separate infoboxes for different fields, such as muscles, nerves and embryology. These have been united so that at the "back end", every template will take formatting directly from the main anatomy infobox -- however at the "front end", there is little difference for readers. This will make future changes much easier -- including adding new fields, formatting, and reordering the contents. Several changes have already been made: infoboxes now link to a relevant anatomical terminology article; contents are now divided into 'Identifiers' and 'Details' headings, making it easier to grasp content for new readers; and new fields have been added, including Greek and UBERON, with several more under discussion.

External links

An editor has reviewed all our template-based external links. These are the links that often fill the "External links" category, and sometimes used as citations. At least thirty different links sets, with the number of links stretching into the thousands, have been fixed, and if not functioning, deleted. A number of non-functioning dead links (with no archived websites available), and one or two others, have been deleted. This helps keep our 'external links' section relevant and functioning for those readers who want extra information about articles.

Wikidata

Perhaps our most important change has been integration with Wikidata. This is because of both its current uses and potential future uses. Wikidata is a service related to Wikipedia focusing on storing information. Data relating to a Wikipedia item (such as a muscle or bone, or even a template) can have related "structured" infomation stored systematically alongside it. For example, a muscle can have information about its embryological origin, nerve supply, and the relevant sections of Terminologica Anatomica (TA) stored alongside it. Much information that was stored within articles on infoboxes is now stored on Wikidata, including the TA, TH, and TE fields. An immediate benefit is that Wikipedias in every language will (as they update their own infoboxes, be able to automatically include this information. New data can be entered in a much easier format, and data can be batch entered by bots making future updates much easier Future uses include data visualisation. I personally am looking forward to the day when a reader can view a wikidata-based "tree", clicking mesoderm and seeing all of the derived structures, then selecting the intermediate mesoderm, then Pronephric duct, mesonephric duct and vas deferens. The possibilities of using Wikidata for data visualisation are really quite encouraging!

Focus - how far we've come

How far have we come since our first newsletter... the answer is quite a lot! Here goes:

Hundreds to thousands of articles improved and standardised by many, many editors.
14 new good articles created or added to our project [447]
Improved quality of our articles - subjectively and objectively. GAs quadrupled from 5 to 16, B-class articles doubles from 62 to 115, C-class article well on the way to trebling from 219 to 611, Start-class increased from 1,082 to 1,570.
Tens to hundreds of mergers performed between tiny, unedited articles - a remnant of our Gray's Anatomy (1918) heritage.
Layout guidelines changed and layout standardised for the majority of our articles
In the project space:
- WikiProject Animal Anatomy created
- 20-30+ new members
- 200+ new editors welcomed with our new welcome template
- Interdisciplinary category system to help new editors
Active integration with wikidata in our infoboxes
Overhaul of all of our navboxes
Review and integration of all of our templates
External link templates reviewed to ensure they all work
To help improve anatomical literacy:
- Creation of a suite of five Anatomical terminology articles, and overhaul of existing articles
- Creation of the {{Anatomy-terms}} template created
- Links provided in infoboxes
- Simplifying anatomical terminology essay released

These are substantial improvements and my thanks go out to our many editors who played a part in this. These improvements are almost always the result of consensus, compromise, collaboration and discussion between multiple editors.

What's new[edit]

Introduction to WikiProject Anatomy and Anatomy on Wikipedia[edit]

We welcome all those interested in anatomy!

Seeing as we have so many new members, and a constant stream of new editors to our articles, I would like to write in this issue about how our project and articles are arranged.

The main page for WikiProject Anatomy is here. We are a WikiProject, which is a group of editors interested in editing and maintaining anatomy articles. Our editors come from all sorts of disciplines, from academically trained anatomists, students, and lay readers, to experienced Wikipedia editors. Based on previous discussions, members of our project have chosen to focus mainly on human anatomy ([450]), with a separate project for animal anatomy (WP:ANAN). A WikiProject has no specific rights or abilities on Wikipedia, however it does allow a central venue for discussion on different issues where interested editors can be asked to contribute, collaborate, and perhaps reach a consensus.

Project and article structure

Wikipedia has about 5,500,000 articles. Of these, about 20,000 fall under our project, about 5,000 of which are text-containing articles. Articles are manually assigned by editors as relating to our project (many using the rater tool). As well as articles, other Wikipedia pages in our project include, lists, disambiguation pages, and redirects. Our articles are improving over time, and you can have a look at our goals and progress, or last newsletter, to get a better idea about this.

Our articles are structured according to the manual of style, specifically here. The manual of style is a guideline, which "is a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow, though it is best treated with common sense, and occasional exceptions may apply", and prescribes the layout of anatomy articles, most of which follow it.

Our articles are organised in a particular way. Most articles have a infobox in its lead, describing key characteristics about the article. Because we have so many articles, articles are often linked together in different ways. An article tends to focus on the primary topic it is written about. Further information can be linked like this, or piped (like this). We use navboxes, which are the boxes at the bottom of articles providing links to similar topics, as well as hatnotes. Typical hatnotes in articles include {{main}}, {{see also}} and {{further}}. This lets us link to relevant and related articles. The bottom of articles also shows categories, which store groups of related articles.

Tools

For interested editors, our project offers a number of additional tools to help edit our articles. On our main page appears a log of the most edited recent articles. An automatic list of recent changes to all our articles is here. We have a list of the most popular pages (WP:ANAT500). To keep abreast of news and discussions, it is best to monitor our talk page, newsletters, and our article alerts, which automatically lists deletion, good article, featured article, and move proposals. We also have a open tasks page for editors to create lists of tasks that other editors can collaborate with. Articles are also manually assigned to a "discipline", so interested editors in for example, gross anatomy, histology, or embryology can easily locate articles via here.

Our project has all sorts of smaller items that editors may or may not know about, including a barnstar, user box ({{User WPAnatomy}}), welcoming template ({{WPANATOMY welcome}}) and fairly comprehensive listing of templates (here).

User:Meteor sandwich yum/Tidy citations[edit]

Special:Diff/1164854837 by User:Neveselbert (mobile) showed up on my watchlist. I think this "Harmonize whitespace" concept is a bad idea. It generates diffs (which I had to spend time examining to make sure it was OK) for no particular value. I'd prefer if people didn't do this. RoySmith (talk) 14:12, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
