New Red Link for the International Women's Day 2022 Takeover[edit]

Kia ora, I've created a link for the International Women's Day event here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:WPNZmeetups Essentially all you do is edit the table by clicking on the E in the top left of the table, go to the bit you want to insert a new page link, then copy the code for the previous page, update the information for your new page and save and it creates a red link for you to edit. An invitation to help the West Coast Wikipedian at Large[edit]

Development West Coast have kindly agreed to support another short Wikipedian at Large contract on the West Coast, to cover areas that were missed the first time around: Lake Brunner, Te Wahipounamu, Ōpārara Arches, and Punakaiki. Can you tell me how you created that citation? There are a couple of issues with it:

|last=1945- – 1945- is not an author surname so does not belong in |last=
|first=Smythe, John, – Smythe, John, is not the author's given name

I would be surprised if you created this citation manually so that suggests that you used a tool to create it so I filed a bug report because visual editor (which you apparently used to make the overall edit) should not have created this broken citation. How did you create the citation?

I also want to do one for Ngā Puna Waihanga, the Māori Artists and Writers Society that was founded in 1973. I am not sure which name to use as the article title? The Te Reo or the English or both? Ah well we all know the current controversies off-Wikipedia in Aotearoa about bilingual signage etc....but hei aha! Personally I love te reo being clearly visible. Not sure what the Wikipedia policy is, but why not just put the whole title as Ngā Puna Waihanga, the Māori Artists and Writers Society? Or what I have also seen: title - Ngā Puna Waihanga then in the introductory section add: also known as The Māori Artists and Writers Society. A good point to raise. Also, are you familiar with the process of reflisting citations? It just means that the full reference lives below in a modified reference section and only the name is shown in the source editing window? Then obviously the name can just be used again if required. It makes editing much easier. I can go and do a couple for you? And note, that others can still add references as they usually would - the two systems happily co-exist. Ok, so probably not a big deal then if you don't use source editing...(I do all the time except when doing a final proofread). Anyway, I have reflisted the first citation, so have a look in source editing. Certainly not mandatory to do this. I work with a group of editors who do it. Thanks for letting me know. There is a lot of thinking around the use of the two terms Māoritanga and Te Ao Māori and they are both used a lot in various contexts so having them in the article is valid. Are there references you got the statements from?

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Troubling edits on Lingua Franca, about te reo[edit]

Sorry to bother you, I'm an IP editor who had edited seldom, but I was recently concerned to see changes made to a description of te reo Māori as a historical lingua franca on the page Lingua franca, by an editor called "Roger8Roger". He deleted the initial passage, describing it as an "offtopic agenda based rant with nothing about the topic. No evidence to show a language called classical maori [sic] ever existed." He then made a lengthy comment on the talk page about it, in which he stated "If you don't already know, as part of the Maori Renaissance in NZ, there is a widespread promotion of all things to do with Maori culture and language, a project enthusiastically adopted by certain sections of society prone to such causes. This subsection is an example... Maori were illiterate until European arrival in the late 18thC". I felt worried that he is pushing an agenda here. His tone is quite nasty - and the statement about Māori being "iliterate" makes about as much sense as criticising the Romans for not being able to drive.

He removed one source from Te Ara describing Māori spoken before English overtook it by number of speakers, claiming it wasn't good enough. He also took issue with Māori being described as a lingua franca at all, claiming it simply wasn't, and it was simply "some Europeans used Maori with varying levels of fluency to communicate with the locals, such as in barter and by Church missionaries..."

This goes against an abundance of source both in this passage about Māori and ones I later found myself. A few of which are here, here,, here, here and here.
