WikiXDC: Wikipedia 10th Birthday!

National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)

You are invited to WikiXDC, a special meetup event and celebration on Saturday, January 22 hosted by the National Archives and Records Administration in downtown Washington, D.C.

  • Date: January 22, 2011 (tentatively 9:30 AM - 5 PM)
  • Location: National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), downtown building, Pennsylvania Avenue & 7th St NW.
  • Description: There will be a behind-the-scenes tour of the National Archives and you will learn more about what NARA does. We will also have a mini-film screening featuring FedFlix videos along with a special message from Jimmy Wales. In the afternoon, there will be lightning talks by Wikimedians (signup to speak), wiki-trivia, and cupcakes to celebrate!

Hi Mheart, I am a PhD student from the Carnegie Mellon University. I am interested in the Wikipedia community, especially the mechanism of collaboration of the work. I noticed that you have participated Alternative Music WikiProject’s collaboration before. Could you please take several minutes to answer five questions if possible? Thanks for your help!

1. How many times (approximately) have you participated in the alternative music collaboration of the week?

2. Why did you participate in the alternative music collaboration of the week?

3. Do you feel you become a better editor through participating in collaboration? If so, could you provide some examples?

4. How did alternative music collaboration of the week change your behaviors? What causes the changes?

5. Are you still participating alternative music collaboration of the week recently? Why?

To the under appreciated gnome, (cnt'd)

Ha, you actually did re-arrange your categories, you must really care about alphabetizing, so it must irk you to realize I was referring to the categories at the very bottom of the page, the ones that can't be fixed without destroying the rest of the page. And an odd request, since you're a self-proclaimed otaku, mind naming me a few good but lesser-known animes that a male, 22 would enjoy, I fear I've gone through all the well-known ones. Haha ohhhh. Yeah, those get automatically placed with the userboxes. My anime reccomendations: Gungrave - it's a little violent and serious but the story is amazing; Berserk - another über-violent, awesome storied series. They had to stop animating after episode 24 due to the gore, but now it's back in production again. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is the hilarious story of two sisters set out to rule the world. The animation reminds me of Powerpuff Girls. Let me know what you go with! :) mheart (talk) 03:19, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Semi-protection

Hello Mheart and, first of all, thanks for patrolling Wikipedia against vandalism! From your edit summary, here, I think you were using the tag {{edit semi-protected}} to request protection of the page, which is not what the tag is intended for. That template should only be used by non-autoconfirmed users to ask that a change be made to an already semi-protected page; any autoconfirmed user can, then, make the change if warranted. To ask for protection or semi-protection, you should use WP:RFPP or use WP:TWINKLE, which helps you request page protection with two clicks.

Category creation/structure advice for WikiProject Women's History?

I see that you've worked a lot with the existing Categories system, and so I'm hoping you can help us out over at WikiProject Women's History.

We may need to create a bunch of categories, and we could use some help figuring out the best structure to use and the best way to get that through the category-creation process in a non-spammy way. I'm the founder of the project, and I've written out some of the issues at our talk page. Yo

So, I finally decided what I think about Gungrave, and I give it a 3.3/5, with episodes 2&3 and 25&26 being quite a bit better than the parts inbetween. The pulp fiction reference in 25 definitely made me laugh. I'm still working on PSG, but I can only watch shows like that so quickly. Anyways, thanks for the recommendation and if you have any more suggestions I could use them. Oh and I did list some of my favourites here, as you had asked. Oh, and Gungrave did inspire me to play Planescape: Torment, so I'll give the show a bonus plus 0.3. Passionless -Talk 01:21, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Hehe, I just watched the first two episodes of Azumanga Daioh, pretty cute and funny, not bad even with a lack of plot. Bleach is quite good, though it does have two filler arcs from 64-109 and 230-265 which are alright, but unconnected from the rest of the story. And as for me being a big gamer, I'm not sure, I don't own any gaming system besides my desktop, but I do play quite a variety of games. As of late I've been prefering games which contain strategic elements over more fun-based games. Though I still do play CoD Black Ops for the action, and I've obviously been playing quite a bit of Wikipedia lately, I just survived an attack from a sock and some admins in that one . And for the two games you mentioned, they look like they could be fun, but I haven't played those types of games in quite a while, I'm personally looking forward to Diablo III. I wish wikipedia was set up more like a game, where you earn exp for making edits and receive "You leveled up!" messages*One of the best things in the world*, and actually gain small perks as you lvl up. I think it would both attract and retain editors, cause of course it would be way harder to leave wiki if you have a lvl 95 char with all sorts of cool perks and items...I may have to bring this up at the village pump. Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
  2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
  3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.

DC Meetup: May 7 @ Tenleytown Library

The Guild of Copy Editors – May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive

The Guild of Copy Editors invite you to participate in the May 2011 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive began on May 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on May 31 at 23:59 (UTC). The goals of this backlog elimination drive are to eliminate as many articles as possible from the 2009 backlog and to reduce the overall backlog by 15%. ! NEW ! In an effort to encourage the final elimination of all 2009 articles, we will be tracking them on the leaderboard for this drive.

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their September 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy editing backlog. DC Meetup 23 & Annual Membership Meeting

Wikimedia District of Columbia, the newest officially recognized chapter, is holding its Annual Membership Meeting at 1pm on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the Tenley-Friendship Neighborhood Library.

Agenda items include:

  • election of the Board of Directors for the next two years
  • approval of a budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year
  • report on the activities and accomplishments of the past year
  • social gathering afterwards at a nearby restaurant

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters.

Interview about COTW

Hi Mheart. I am a PhD student from the Social Computing Lab at Carnegie Mellon University. Here are my user page and my personal website. I am working with Professor Robert E. Kraut and Professor Aniket Kittur. We are interested in the Wikipedia community, especially the Collaborations of the Week (COTWs). Here is a brief description of our research project.

Thanks for filling out our survey last time! It would really help us if you would be willing to have an in-depth talk with us about your perspective on the values and the downsides of the COTWs. The interview might take 30 minutes. We can talk via instant messenger (my gtalk is haiyi.zhu.cmu@gmail.com). Do you have time at any point during this week?

Wikipedia Loves Libraries comes to DC on Saturday, November 5th, from 1-5pm, at the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Library.

We will be holding an edit-a-thon, working together to improve Wikipedia content related to DC history, arts, civil rights, or whatever suits your interests. There may also be opportunities to help with scanning historic photos plus some swag!
