There's no reason to erase the secret identities section for the page. It's an important part of the episode's draw. If people are replacing unknown data for speculation then please help us by fixing it. But cutting a tree at the trunk because one limb is broke is a bit extreme. I'm really sorry, i'm new to this, I agree in your suggestion to move the list article to the other page you have mentioned, I will try and work on it, I just thought that I might be able to help and add some information to the Malaysia page. I have few questions tho, I don't even know how did i get to this page and i don't know how to come back to read your replay (sorry, not so good at computers), please send me of how to get here back again? Is there some kind of inbox in Wikipedia ? I guess i'm gonna have to do some reading on this to get to know it, thank you.

Categorization of Bollinger Bands Article

Time9, it is a mistake to categorize BB article as a chart overlay. While it is true that BBs are often used as a chart overlay, there is much more to them than that; for example, the %b and BandWdith indicators discussed in the article. In addition there are trading system applications, stop-loss techniques and indicator normalizations. I could cite more examples, but I think the point that 'chart overlay' is a far too narrow categorization is obvious. Clearly, Bollinger Bands et al are a technical analysis topic. Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated.

Stats

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs
  • 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive.
  • Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%.
  • 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here.

Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Our next drive is scheduled for January 2011. In the meantime, please consider helping out at the Wikification drive or any of the other places where help with backlogs is needed.

Thank you for participating in the last 2010 backlog elimination drive! We look forward to seeing you in January!

UK Community Notice - IRC meeting

Dear Wikipedian,

This is the first of what will hopefully be a regular notice to help bring together the UK community so that you can be involved in some amazing things. To kick things off, there will be a UK community IRC meeting at 1800 UTC, December 7, 2010 to discuss the future growth and developement of Wikimedia UK. Without huge community support and involvement, the chapter cannot be successful and to get the most out of it, get involved.

For information on the community IRC meeting please go here

More to come about:

  • Wikipedia 10th Anniversary Events
  • 1st Annual UK Wiki-conference
  • Trustee interest meeting - an event for those community members with even just a fleeting interest in becoming trustees of Wikimedia UK.

Paragraph deletion without reason

You thanked me for cleaning up the "White privilege" page, but I only cleaned up one paragraph within the Education subsection. I know the writer of that paragraph and am familiar with his arguments and writings. I added references and links to two of his articles, one journal article and one article available only online. Apparently it offended somebody, for that whole paragraph was deleted. No reason was given.

An opinion acquires a certain authority or at least respectability if it is impersonally articulated in an Wikipedia article and remains unchallenged. Consequently, it seems, on certain issues, usually having to do with race, ethnicity, gender, etc., self-appointed guardians will suppress the expression of ideas, regardless of how well-documented, civil, or impersonal they may be. The suppressor will not give a reason, perhaps because that would seem to dignify the allegedly repugnant idea and to suggest that the expresser and the suppresser enjoyed equal respectability.

If you have any suggestions about how to draw out the censor, or how to protect contributions from arbitrarily imposed censorship, I would appreciate hearing them. I have made many contributions to Wiki articles over the years, but if there is no effective way to deal with unaccountable censorship, I may consider making a public issue out of it.Anarchristian (talk) 16:08, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Please note that this is just a method of keeping track of how many editors are currently active on Poland-related topics. Feel free to move yourself back if you disagree with this, and/or comment on WT:POLAND. Lanco Infratech - Edits (Vandalism)

Dear Marek,

Happy new year.

I need your help with some edits made on "Lanco Infratech" page by user "Mukerjee". All the edits made by him were done with some personal intentions and completely against the Neutral Point of View Policy of Wikipedia. For instance, the page was created with only negative remarks in November 2010. General information of the company should be there along with other information. Please help me in stopping him from editing, which is against the policies of wikipedia.

Deletion of a page.

Hello, Marek;

Thank you for the warm welcome - I only realised I had this a couple of days ago! (The cookies were a little stale - but still very nice :))

Now for the serious stuff. I need some assistance. I have come across a page that I feel is highly offensive. I wish the page to be deleted but I'm not completely sure of the best way to go about this. I'm not sure about the 'best' way to approach the request as I'm not comfortable with the idea that my request is disregarded for just any-old reason. As far as I understand, the process is that I edit the page with a request for deletion and then someone - anyone - can just vote 'keep' and that's that.

I feel I have a valid reason for deletion but the way I understand it is, if I enter into a 'talk' page then any number of 'indifferent' contributers can simply say 'No' to my reasons (for whatever of their own reasons). I have spent much time analysing the text of the offensive page and I feel I've properly thought-through my 'many' points for deletion of the page. My problem is made more difficult, however, in-that the content of the page definitely appeals to a younger age-group who might (or might not) consider my objections to be 'old-fashioned'. I wouldn't want to pre-judge the youth of the world but I'm reluctant to 'charge-in' with my objection only for it to be rejected straight-away. I have an extensive list of arguments and pointers that I would like to be considered and I would like ALL of my objections to be heard.

I have looked through the history of the page and on two occasions it was nominated for deletion. These were voted 'Keep' and so it goes on. But, I noticed that during discussions on the deletion many people simply said, along-the-lines; 'Oh, I think it's ok - let's just keep it'.. It was as-if many of the voters were just taking the easy option rather than seriously considering the content from an 'offensive' viewpoint - it didn't directly affect them so it didn't merit deletion.

I've tried to find the procedure for deletion but I'm very passionate about the subject and I'm afraid I'm just not finding what I'm looking for. Please could you advise me on my best approach so that I have the optimum chance of this page's deletion. I can provide you with the name of the page and, in-fact, I'd very much welcome your opinions on my likelihood for deletion of this page.

Cheers.

Yachtee (talk) 23:45, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi Yachtee. Just butting in here in case Marek is already in offline. Wikipedia has a policy of not being censored, some of our content is highly offensive to some people, simply being offensive to someone is not a reason to delete things. That said we have several routes to delete stuff and there are certain things that we have very little tolerance for - unsourced negative information for starters. If you want a proper debate and a chance to make your case for deleting an article then the best way is to file an wp:AFD request - this results in a seven day discussion and ends with an admin closing based on the arguments. Best to read a few before starting one yourself though. ϢereSpielChequers 00:44, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Hello Marek69; I do appreciate your kind words about my editing work. I was a researcher with CMHC for many years, an experience that raised my sensitivity to good research and to objective non-partisan writing. Both as government and as an independent writer, I understand the value of clear, impartial, well documented writing, though I don't always get perfect. I am still a novice with Wiki and try to find my way around. I have managed so far with a bit of help from my computer wiz son. I still wonder why in my edits my name appears in red rather than blue. Help with WikiProject Dacia and conflicts

Hi Marek and Happy new year. You welcomed me when I stared to edit on WP, so I thought you could be the best place to ask for help. I put a lot of work in creating Wikipedia:WikiProject Dacia recently. I received the support of quite a few great folks who are now members and interested. The main issue regarding the topic Dacia as I am coming to realize now as I got pulled into things is the high amount of conflict around it. The history of Balkans is a subject of very heated debates and in WP results in vandalism, revert wars, lack of neutrality, aggressiveness, constant removal of sources abusing WP:IRS and such. Articles like Dacian script (vandalized then proposed for deletion), Dacian language, Sinaia lead plates, Origin of the Romanians, Costoboci, File:Roman_Empire_125.svg are currently under siege. The {{WikiProject Dacia}} gets removed from very relevant articles, as here and here. I reported one instance of vandalism but it was unsuccessful. Some people have very aggressive agendas, focused on deleting and revising from their point of views, while I want to focus on creating and organizing all this material.

I am very put off and disappointed by all this, I am wondering if you have any suggestions since you have much more experience here. Any other general suggestions about the project are also welcomed. Thanks a lot and best regards!--Codrin.B (talk) 22:16, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

Participation
GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

Acupuncture Entry

Marek,

I am quite new to Wikipedia, so please be patient with me. This message is in response to the reverting of my edit to the entry for Acupuncture. It has been consistently reverted despite the inclusion of edit summaries and citations. I understand that the elimination of roughly two paragraphs may be cause for alarm, but the current entry contains some concerning, dubious information about the history and scope of practice of acupuncture and stylized in such a way as to leave the reader with questionable impression of the term.

I welcome criticism and guidelines and in no way wish exert a bias on the entry. Luckily there is a vast body of research into at least the history of acupuncture and it's role in the frame work of historical medicine in Asia and contemporary medicine throughout the world. The current entry strikes me as little more than an agenda, and a poorly written one at that.

What can I do help improve the entry that won't be immediately reverted?

Cheers.--Undergroundlemon (talk) 03:50, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi Undergroundlemon, thank you for your message.
If you believe part or parts of the article are incorrect, you should start by inserting a citation needed template.
The coding for this is {{citation needed|date=January 2011}}
It is always a good idea to leave an edit summary explaining your reason for editing.
Before you delete any substantial content from a page, it is customary to first template, then start a discussion on the talk page stating your intention to delete and your reasoning for this action.
I hope this helps -- Marek.69 talk 04:00, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

As I mentioned in my reply to user:Undergroundlemon (please see above reply), if you believe part or parts of the article are incorrect, you should start by inserting a citation needed template.
The coding for this is {{citation needed|date=January 2011}}

Sounds Good, Where did you leave off with the Utahraptor? Copy Editing? Tofutwitch11 (TALK) 00:29, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your offer of help, Tofutwitch. Assistance is always appreciated. :-)
Wayne, a log of new pages can be found on Special:Newpages. I've not done that much on NPP recently. I know that it is advisable to patrol new pages from the bottom of the log; this gives editors a chance to get the article to conform to wiki standards. Tagging anything other than attack pages, copyvio, vandalism or complete nonsense only a few minutes after creation is not likely to be constructive and may only serve to annoy the page author. Try to help the author and offer the benefit of your knowledge and experience of Wikipedia, rather than just slap a template on the article.
Before you create an article, you should reasearch your references to establish notability, if no reliable third-party sources can be found on a topic, then it should not have a separate article. For more information on this, please consult the Wikipedia notability article.
Information and tips on how to create a new article can be found on the Wikipedia:Your first article page. I would recommend reading these articles thoroughly first, then when you are ready create the article in your own userspace, i.e User:Wayne Slam/New article name When you feel the article is good enough and conforms to Wikipedia's standards, you can move it to the main namespace. Its also a good idea to ask another editor to look at it with a 'fresh pair of eyes' so give me a shout when you get to this stage.
Best Regards -- Marek.69 talk 01:32, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, Marek. I just need help working on that particular article. I know how to cite a reference but I need to know which one to use. It's a good idea to put it in a subpage first since it will unlikely be deleted. I want it to be a DYK article, too. I also need tips on the anti-vandalism field, too. Question

Hello,

Though I've posted a few times on Wikipedia, I'm still relatively new, and I'm trying to figure out how to get a page I've written published. It is currently located on my user profile: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Rachel_Grace#Digital_Leather For some reason, it won't let me publish it under the proper title, which seems to be locked by administrators. Is there a solution to this?

Done. That page had been repeatedly created, with advertorial 'spam' content, and thus was protected from creation (called WP:SALT). So, we needed an admin to move it for you, and that has now been done. Digital Leather is live. Thanks.
Next time you need to use a {{helpme}} though, please do it on your own talk page. The helpme thing gets the attention of any helper. If, instead, you are leaving a note for a specific person (like e.g. here, for Marek69), then you don't need a helpme; they'll see the message. Cheers!  Chzz  ►  19:16, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Edits AWB

Hi

I just noticed that you have changed a quote with AWB

You changed Ilkeston 'If you're...' to 'If you are...' [1]

I am hoping this is a one-off incident :¬)

thanks Chaosdruid (talk) 11:25, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi Chaosdruid, thank you for letting me know.
Unfortunately an oversight on my part. Obviously quotations should not be 'corrected' in this way
I also hope this is a one-off incident :-)
Thank you for your help.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 15:43, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
No problem - I got a mighty roasting one day from an admin who noticed my AWB summary wasn't right - the bloody thing doesn't always do what it should lol and I am not sure if it counts 'The blah blah blah' as a a quotation (rather than "The blah blah")
I have done plenty of them myself, the latest I have noticed is I need to fix the regex for "it's" to "it is" as it has started to pick up on words with it's on the end - I am hoping adding a space before " it's" will fix that :¬)

The February 2011 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive has begun!

Get going!

The February 2011 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive has begun. Please get started, as the drive aims to wikify over 2,000 articles this month. We're going to need all the firepower we can get, so please remind your friends to join up as well. In case you didn't know, wikification is fairly simple: just add wiki markup, links, and similar formatting. Thanks for joining; we're looking forward to an exciting time this month!

Requesting help with unreasonable user.

Marek:

How are you?

I am in need of assistance regarding an ongoing attempt to delete referenced material and an entire infobox from the "White Argentine" article.

Two editors (AndyTheGrump and GiovBag) mutually decided that white Argentines are "an invalid ethnicity," that the article should be deleted, and that, in the meantime, it should have no infobox. Every assertion, invluding numerous statistics, is referenced, and the infobox (such as for nearly every other ethnic group on Wikipedia) includes examples of well-known Argentine people from the past and present who are, as their bios state, of European descent.

By way of granting them the benefit of the doubt, I and another editor, Pablozeta, proposed renaming the page "European Argentine" (since white Argentines don't normally describe themselves as "white," but "European" or "of European decent"). To add to sources already in the article, Pablo found a volume of sources to that effect (see here), but to no avail. The more skilled of the two, "Andy the Grump," has hurled claims of WP:V and WP:BLP violations, and done so arbitrarily and without specific reasons (he wouldn't find any, of course, since every assertion is sourced to a degree seldom seen in similar pages). Moreover, since they are mostly limiting themselves to Argentines, without bringing into question all such pages, I can only believe that they will continue to delete as much as they can in the page without basis or consensus.

Responding to my previous report of edit warring, another administrator, SlimVirgin, placed a freeze on new edits on the 25th. I really don't want to file another one, and as these two will not even attempt to find consensus (instead resorting to calling me a racist [2]), I hope you can help.

Thank you for your time and trouble, Sherlock4000 (talk) 01:18, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi Sherlock4000, thank you for your message.
A difficult situation. Unfortunately a very common one on Wikipedia.
I would advise not to get into an edit war, as this only make the situation worse.
It is always best to keep a neutral and civil discussion going with aim to reaching a consensus.
I will take a look to see if I can come up with a working solution and will get back to you as soon as I can.
Kind Regards -- Marek.69 talk 18:21, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, Marek. It's good hearing from again. I said, as soon as the staccato deletions of the infobox on the page started, that these people would like to see the entire article vanish, and here we are. You've probably already noticed, but its deletion is being discussed here.
All the best to you, Marek. Sherlock4000 (talk) 19:35, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.

Statistics
  • 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
  • One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
  • Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
  • Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.
Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering the barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Thank you for participating in this year's first Backlog elimination drive! We hope to see you in March.

Jaipur - Edit

Hi

This is to inform that no content has been removed but only reorganized.

  1. It makes more sense to have prose in tourism section.
  2. Culture and Education sections should come before Transport section.

Hence, I am undoing your changes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adroit09 (talkcontribs) 05:33, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Please help!

The February 2011 Wikification Backlog Elimination Drive is almost complete. Please help, as the backlog is still very large. Still exceeding 20,000 articles! The goal is 18,000 or less. Lets see if we can do it! We're going to need all the firepower we can get, so please remind your friends to help as well.Thank you for all your help thus far!

Question for Markek !

Hi Marek ! Thanks for your welcome note. I will learn more about editing Wiki pages. I have a few contributions - photographs of tennis players for example. In general they seem like appropriate contributions as they generally raise the standard on the photographs shown - with respect to composition, resolution and post production clean-up. Many are picked up by Internet blogs on sports and used in their articles.

I have a question as to protocol, which you may be able to help me with. I took a picture of a building designed by an Architect by the name of Frank Gehry. The picture attempts to capture some of the elements of the building that tie back to the article - the influence of aquatic forms on the architect's conception of design. There was no picture of the structure I shot - a 76 story tower (almost complete) in lower Manahattan, in NY - that is - on the architect's Wiki page. Because I believe that the architect is the true artist in architectural photography (in my humble opinion), I felt that it would be appropriate to send the picture to Frank Gehry and ask if he had any objections to my posting it on the Wiki page for him. Mr. Gehry was very, very pleased with the picture and asked for the right to use the picture inside and outside of his office, and he said that he had no objection whatsoever to my posting the picture on the Wiki page describing him.

A few days ago I went to show the picture to a friend and noticed that someone had taken the picture down and replaced it with one that did far less justice to Mr. Gehry. I was somewhat irritated by this. I put my picture back up.

I do not believe in taking pictures down on the Wiki in general - if someone gets a picture up - and it is not a great picture, but they get it up first, so be it. In the cast of a bird, for example if the picture of the bird is a male, and not great, I will only post a picture of the same bird if it is the female of the species, and note that it is such and call out attention to the differences.

Could you let me know the protocol on these matters, and in particular, how I should approach this Frank Gehry situation ?

Hello!

Hello! It's Theologiae! I have now decided to come back to Wikipedia for a while and I feel much more confident to edit here, with new interests and knowledge. I was also added a few userboxes to my page. I was looking at the page on userboxes, and it said that putting an existing userbox on another person's page was not correct. However, does that mean that a person has to ask permission to the creator of the userbox to put it on their page, or that they have to ask permission to put a userbox in general on another person's page?

Anyway, it's good to be back for a while

Monitor. WikiProject Poland Newsletter: Issue 1 (April 2011)

WikiProject Poland Newsletter • April 2011
For our freedom and yours

Welcome to our first issue of WikiProject Poland newsletter, the Monitor (named after the first Polish newspaper).

Our Project has been operational since 1 June, 2005, and also serves as the Poland-related Wikipedia notice board. I highly recommend watchlisting the Wikipedia:WikiProject Poland page, so you can be aware of the ongoing discussions. We hope you will join us in them, if you haven't done so already! Unlike many other WikiProjects, we are quite active; in this year alone about 40 threads have been started on our discussion page, and we do a pretty good job at answering all issues raised.

In addition to a lively encyclopedic, Poland-related, English-language discussion forum, we have numerous useful tools that can be of use to you - and that you could help us maintain and develop:

This is not all; on our page you can find a list of useful templates (including userboxes), awards and other tools!

With all that said, how about you join our discussions at WT:POLAND? Surely, there must be something you could help others with, or perhaps you are in need of assistance yourself?

You have received this newsletter because you are listed as a [member link] at WikiProject Poland. • Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 21:11, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
