PUT IT BACK![edit]

on lost ship of desert please put back the media timeline i tried the undo and it said no. im not sure what to do to undo what you did. im dislexic so it was very hard to create that list in the first place. (thank the lord for spell checkers) The article you will note is listed under american mythology and folklore so much of it will be things like "someone said" or "people claim that" that is what folklore is storys that change with each telling The Lost ship's uniquness is that it is well Documented folklore. the purpose of the Media Timeline was not so much a reference but to show How the Stories about the lost ship changed with each decade of people telling about it. that is why only the stories that could be found through the internet were listed and the verbal variants were left out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.102.81.151 (talk) 09:47, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please consider[edit]

"The deleted material you refer to...". This is a quote from your last message to me. Here is how the syntax should be: "The deleted material to which you refer....".

With intellectual integrity, please do consider that you are not qualified to be an editor of anything. You do not even know our language. --wterrell

My "rant" as you refer to my note, is concerning the deletion of information, prime source material, and pictures that have previously been approved, on the page for Steyr Mannlicher M1894. --wterrell

your definition of 'encyclopedia'[edit]

Is this wiki to be encyclopedic or not? You seem to want to reduce it to short summaries instead of being encyclopedic, extensive, detail, and referenced. And you are editing areas in which you are not an expert.

As a favor I have corrected the spelling on this page. You should review your qualifications to edit an encyclopedia if you cannot give attention to detail and accuracy (ergo: your spelling).

Cleanup by month[edit]

I spend most of my time in cleanup-by-month. There are a number of people working on these, I believe. (Someone is updating the counts, I think there's a bot now). Towards the end of each month there is a big press to close out a month that is down to just a few entries, but newer months have a lot of entire (thousands). I'm all for more people working on cleanup but there's 17,000 articles waiting for cleanup, I don't know if we can make a real dent. The other problem is deciding when they are cleaned up enough. (And we're behind on closing taskforce articles, which is a different problem). RJFJR 14:50, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

East Coast Swing[edit]

I'll see what I can do. I tried to avoid that because I didn't want to get into a controversy about what ECS is (there are many different interpretations of the term). While I know quite a bit about the dance, most of it doesn't come from published research (which is a problem that has been discussed on the Dance WikiProject since that holds true for many other dances as well). I will see what I can put together though. --Cswrye 06:26, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just looked at the articles and the edit histories. Good work. Sorry I haven't been around much; I've been busy both with school and with my own wiki. I plan to help out more, but not before November 14th, 2006. If I contribute before then, consider it a bonus! :-)

Janeway[edit]

Well, if a single source can corroborate multiple sentences in that section, then no. But, right now it's unsubstantiated and vitriolic (and this from the perspective of someone who thinks Voyager is a wretched series). I dropped in all those {{citation neded}} tags to point out the various claims scattered around there. It's uncited non-NPOV; if no one can drop in some means of verifying the claims in that section, then it/they should be deleted. --EEMeltonIV 01:21, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Granting even that it's vitriolic (and it is less so than previous iterations; you're right), it still lacks verifiable citations. --EEMeltonIV 02:30, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The lack of any sort of reliable third-party source is the entire problem. From Wikipedia:Verifiability: "The burden of evidence lies with the editors who have made an edit or wish an edit to remain. Editors should therefore provide references. If an article topic has no reputable, reliable, third-party sources, Wikipedia should not have an article on that topic" (or part of an article, e.g. the bulk of the controversy section). --EEMeltonIV 03:43, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

September Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!

November Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Template:Infobox Hospital upgrade[edit]

I've have some proposals to upgrade functionality and wider (less US-centric) scope of the Template:Infobox Hospital (with then a merge in of the UK-centric Template:Infobox NHS hospital). I think the additional optional parameter names are as generic and succint as I am likely to get - but I would be grateful if you could have a quick glance at the list of parameters and let me know if there are any obvious problems in the proposal. Thanks, yours David Ruben Talk 00:46, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for comments - I've mainly replied on my talkpsge. Additional location parameters would be optional and allow for the template code to apply automatic wikilinks and List of Hospitals in .... In UK a single Medical School may make use of hospitals from a number of different NHS Trust organisations, and not all of an NHS Trust's facilities will be involved in student training - so there is no automatic 1-to-1 equivalence. Classification parameter re US emergency/trauma level will indeed need to be dropped entirely in due course. :-) David Ruben Talk 03:00, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Cleanup Taskforce member,

I noticed that you've listed yourself as a member who's interested in copy-editing. I'm a member of the League of Copyeditors, a project dedicated to managing the sizable backlog of articles needing a copy-edit. We're always looking for new members, and you'd make a great addition to the project! We've started a participation drive for the remainder of February. If you're interested, you can help clear the backlog by adopting the following goals each week:

Thanks, and happy editing! BuddingJournalist 07:37, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, no problem! In the future, if you ever find yourself making copy-edits to an article as part of something else, feel free to list the article in our proofreading page to have one of our proofreaders take a look at it. We also accept copy-edit requests from anyone needing help, so keep us in mind. BuddingJournalist 00:41, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

John Carr[edit]

Ridiculous though it may sound, I had it in mind to reference most of that list. I'll put stuff back as and when I do though. Some of it did look a bit dubious though, and the article certainly looks better after your trimming. Regards, CiaranG 23:56, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean reference as in placing sources in the article or using Wikipedia as a source? I only kept the things that had a wiki-link attached to them, since those might be notable enough that a mention is worthwhile. We certainly didn't need the man's entire CV. Kerowyn Leave a note 00:02, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I mean reference as in placing sources in the article. Not all of them were worthy of mention anyway of course, it looks like it was pasted in from somewhere, but a surprising number of them are. The existing wikilinks are not a good guide as to which ones either. CiaranG 00:06, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Source for Burkitt's theories[edit]

Could you please tell me the reference where you found that Burkitt believed that squat toilets might be protective against Appendicitis? I'd like to mention it in the Squat Toilet article, which includes several theories on the benefits of squatting.

Thanks.

Jonathan --Jonathan108 17:57, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you restored the language about "dismissing" the toilet theory, and said it has never been supported. This puzzles me, since the fiber theory has never been supported either. All the "evidence" for the fiber theory was from epidemiology. Fiber was just the interpretation given to the geographic prevelance of appendicitis. The toilet theory has as much right to be considered, and the fiber theory has as much right to be dismissed. But why would anyone dismiss a hypothesis that has never been tested and which does not contradict any known facts? That seems unscientific. Please explain or revert.

Thanks.--Jonathan108 18:24, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The long article in the Medical Journal of Australia says that "Dietary theories, notably an inadequate fibre intake, have been advanced to account for the geography of the disease, but it is clear that diet can not fully explain the epidemiology."

The article shows no awareness of the toilet theory, and certainly has not "dismissed" it. Unless you can show evidence that the theory is "known", has been discussed (and dismissed), I believe that your wording is misleading.

When I brought awareness of this theory to Wikipedia a couple of years ago, it was considered by the MD-editors like JFW and Alex.tan to be like something from outer space. It has been completely under the radar and has never been given any serious consideration by health practitioners. 99% of them have never heard of it. --Jonathan108 12:56, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't suggesting giving Burkitt's theory more space. The version which you recently changed took the same amount of space, but was more accurate. The new wording says:

"Most health practitioners accept Dr. Burkitt's first cause as a contributing factor, but dismiss with the second one, which has never been supported."

This wording is incorrect for 3 reasons:

1. It states that most health practitioners dismiss the toilet theory. You have provided no evidence that this is true. I have never seen anything in writing dismissing the theory (or even discussing it.) Your recent comments to me said that "most health practitioners wouldn't agree with it." That is not a fact, but an opinion -- one for which you have provided no justification.

2. It states that the theory has never been supported. This implies that it has been tested but has failed the test. It would be more correct to say that it has never been tested. That would be a more neutral point of view.

3. It implies that one can dismiss a theory which has never been tested simply because it has never been tested. This is contrary to the scientific method, the whole basis for medical advances. A hypothesis can be challenged if there is evidence contradicting it, but can't be challenged simply because it has never been tested.

Revert of University of Colorado at Boulder[edit]

I have reverted your change to University of Colorado at Boulder with the school colors. The official school colors are Silver and Gold. Your changing the colors despite the note to see the talk page was not appropriate. The talk page contains a link that certifies these are the school colors. This was clearly a bad faith edit on your part for completely ignoring the note and failing to see the talk page first. I stopped short of giving you an official vandalism warning because of your edit history, but failing to see the talk page is a serious problem, especially considering the note you changed. --MECUtalk 02:53, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies then. I must have clicked to view revisions that included an edit to change the colors. This has been a sore point for me and it appeared to me you had changed it, and the note with it. I humbly apologize. --MECUtalk 05:25, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I really feel bad about this, especially since I went off on you, and to your further credit, you replied sanely and calmly. Motto of the day[edit]

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:39, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do not delete any of this article as this is a project of a number of people who have been working on this situation for sometime since 1967. There will be additions and there needs to be a second page of this information as this demonstration was the centerpiece for a number of actions in the prese4nt politics of Philadelphia. we will reestablish the internal link in the coming month as the links were all working when we tested then and we have had a number of people who have been looking at this page.

Hello and thanks for participating in the June drive! I'd like to remind you to please be a bit more thorough in your wikifying though. For example, articles like Neurophilic could be further wikified—uncommon words like "fascicle" and "nervous tissue" should have been linked. Don't hesitate to link "biomedical" to Biomedicine either. Most of your work is done very well. For instance, I agree that Raindrop impressions probably could not be wikified further. Just try to be a bit more thorough. Thanks. Guoguo12 (Talk)  15:39, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there Kerowyn, I have one other point to bring up. In a few of the articles you wikified, you didn't always link the definition of the article. Take Morrissey Hearing, for example. What is a Morrissey Hearing? It is a legal proceeding (sixth and seventh words in the article), and legal proceeding should be linked to Hearing (law) off of the disambiguation page. As a general rule "x" should always be linked in the format "(Article title) is an 'x' ", or "(Article title), born DOB, was an 'x' ". Those should always be linked somewhere, and I notice that you don't always do that. Otherwise, great job, and I hope you continue wikifying. :) NoleloverTalk·Contribs 15:51, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lead sentence[edit]

Hi. Concering the lead sentence in Gene Wiki articles, as discussed here and here, we have tried to make clear that these articles are not only about the human gene/protein, but also orthologs that exist in other species. The wording that was reached through consensus is perhaps a little awkward, but it is both accurate and concise:

The "that" in the above sentence is non-limiting implying that the protein (and gene) exists in other species besides human. Also since most of these articles deal with the function and properties of the protein, I think it is appropriate that the protein is mentioned first. If you disagree, please discuss this here before making any more changes. Thanks. Boghog (talk) 05:56, 24 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Major tip 'o the hat to you[edit]

I kept meaning to bite the bullet and work on The Secret Policeman's Balls mediagraphy, but after I saw what you have done...wow. Excellent work, converting everything to tables. Big kudos, and keep up the great work! Nolelover Talk·Contribs 12:47, 18 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Year end awards[edit]

I've be contemplating a few ideas for year-end awards, and I'd like y'alls input, since we'll be doing all the work. I think we should announce it to the project via the newsletter, or with the call for the October drive, or probably both. I've put a draft announcement below in italics.

In order to reward continuous participation in WP: Wikify, we have decided to create a series of year-end awards. For the purposes of these awards, we will only be considering articles wikified in the past calendar year which have been recorded as part of the bimonthly drives. A calendar year shall be defined as 00:00:00 UTC 1 January 2011 to 23:59:59 31 December 2011.

  1. Most articles wikified in a calender year
  2. Participation in all drives (Participation is defined as having wikified at least 1 article for each drive)
  3. Most leader board appearances
  4. Most wikification in a single article. (can be an article wikified any time in the past year, does not have to be part of a drive.)

I'm not sure about 4. It would be nice to reward people for taking on a major project. The easiest way to do it would be to have people submit diffs if they think they did the most. I don't want to do just the biggest article wikified, cause frequently big articles don't need that much work. I see a lot of potential for whining and moaning over this one though. Obviously, officers would be ineligible for all of these.

As for awards, I think a single "year-end award" template with the specific reason the award is being given (like an Oscar for editing!). Just as long as it is unique compared to the current awards. Number 2 has the potential for numerous awardees, but otherwise I think we should just give out one award per category (2 in case of ties).

So yeah. Comments? --Kerowyn Leave a note 00:53, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That seems like a pretty good plan to start with. Sorry I've not been active much lately due to recently starting school, once I get the routine figured again out I should be back on much more.Sumsum2010·T·C 01:14, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I like it, I sort of think coordinators could be eligible if the other 3 coordinators agree. I'm particularly proud of the work I did on Thomas Bridges (Anglican missionary) from its prewikify state here. I'm not sure that the article will be the "most wikified article" but I never would've seen it if it weren't for the Wikification drive. Ryan Vesey Review me! 13:08, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
One, two, and three all sound great, but I'm not so sure about four. Seems a little...I dunno...subjective, I guess. I'd suggest leaving that out. As to officers, how about we look at who would have won first? I have a feeling that the only one any of us will even come close to is the participation in all drives, and since there will probably be many winners anyway, there might not be any reason not to include officers for that one. Maybe make that one a bit less of an award then the others? Anyway, Kerowyn, do you think you could work on this whenever you find the time for the next few weeks? Ryan's off to college, Sumsum seems to be busy with school, and I'm having a lovely time at WT:AWB and Template talk:Wikify. Totally swamped, in other words. This is on the backburner until some other things get sorted out, unless you'd like to do the prelim stuff (mainly figuring out which awards for which blah blah). We'll get a newletter out soon (now there's tons of news :P) and we'll mention this in there. Other then that, it will just be here until the end of the year. That alright? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 13:50, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ending the drive[edit]

I'm not going to be around at the time the drive ends, and Ryan and Sumsum are both out for school, so do you think you can end the drive? It's pretty easy - edit the log page and remove the "<!---" and "-->" around that top notice. It's no big deal if you can't - I should be on within a couple hours. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 16:40, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, so I went ahead and closed the drive. Please don't ask me why I was on. ;) Nolelover Talk·Contribs 00:02, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And I was just wondering whether to update the leaderboard or not...--Kerowyn Leave a note 00:06, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead! I'm still wrapping some other stuff up. Ties are fine, but we only want 10 spots (if that means 15 editors get awards, so be it). Nolelover Talk·Contribs 00:20, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
So, interesting story. Assassin's Creed didn't list any of the articles he wikified in the log. I glanced through his user contributions and there's a lot of wikification done, but none of it noted in edit summaries or anything. I'm going to leave a message asking him to list that stuff for us. Should I tell him to just ignore the 'do not edit' notice and put it in the August log, or have him just post a list on my talk page?--Kerowyn Leave a note 01:58, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm...we may have a problem here. I'll get back to you on that. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 15:10, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We may need to set a time so we can all have a discussion about this. Kerowyn Leave a note 16:46, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Wikify Annual Award[edit]

So I put together some mockups (in MS Paint, so excuse the quality) of the year end awards. I thought it would be neat to take off of the "The Order of the Superior Scribe of Wikipedia", and call it the "The Order of the Most Ancient Superior Scribe of Wikipedia". You can see them here: [3]. Decide which you like best, and we can do it properly in Photoshop, or we can do something else. Or we could use the The Order of the Superior Scribe of Wikipedia, since the award system has changed.

In any case I thought it would look something like this:

Most Articles Wikified in 2011
congratulations for doing the thing! Kerowyn Leave a note 05:38, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I think the barnstar-ish award looks great. That would work well for most articles wikified. As to the ancient scribe one, the Buddha-looking guys looks a tad goofy at that size, but shrunk down it I think he might work. Should we use the this barnstar you post here, I don't think we should use the ones on the right, since that star format is already taken. Maybe the top left then? I'm going to start setting up drive pages and the October newsletter, and weren't you gonna briefly talk about the end of year awards in the "From the Editor" section? If so, can you start thinking about that? It obviously wouldn't have to be much. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 16:44, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Newsletter announcement below. I like the top right as well. I had another thought after I posted that. We could also use the star image I used in the barnstar above, with a modified wikification barnstar in the center.Kerowyn Leave a note

Newsletter[edit]

As part of the revamp of WikiProject Wikify's award system, we have decided to add three new awards to the list:

  1. Most articles wikified in a calender year
  2. Participation in all drives (Participation is defined as having wikified at least 1 article for each drive)
  3. Most leader board appearances in a year

The purpose of these awards is to reward continuous participation in the Project and to reward the outstanding dedication many editors have shown. For the purposes of these awards, we will only be considering articles wikified in the past calendar ( 00:00:00 UTC 1 January 2011 to 23:59:59 31 December 2011.) We also will only be counting articles recorded as part of a drive, just to make life easier.

We are still in the process of setting this up, so none of this is carved in stone. Questions and comments are welcome.

Hello Kerowyn. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Ikta, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: A7 does not apply to names. Try WP:PROD or WP:AfD instead. Thank you. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 05:48, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the {{prod}} tag from La 1/2 Docena, which you proposed for deletion. I am leaving this message here to notify you about it. Group is notable based on news coverage in Costa Rican press. If you still think the article should be deleted, please don't add the {{prod}} template back to it. Instead, feel free to list the article at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Thanks!

Query deletion ofpage[edit]

Kerowyn - I hope I'm posting this query in the right place? This is all VERY confusing and DOS like!

Can you send me my Cracking Productions page you deleted (I assume because it seemed to be promoting rather than informing?). I can then re-appraise, edit and re-submit with only bare total facts.

Thanks
