Picture of Theo[edit]

Thanks for your message I started a thread here: [1] and I placed the image on Theo van Gogh. I left the message for you on the discussion in Commons, I don't think it should be deleted, just a file name change. Thanks..Modernist (talk) 13:20, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Burial place of Willem Cornelisz Schouten[edit]

After some searching, I have come to the conclusion that the burial in the Noorderkerk is unlikely. Bartelds didn't mention it in his [bio. The Noorderkerk and the city of Hoorn would make a big deal of it, so the absence of any mention outside wikipedia (and its copies) is suspicious. He also died before the ship even arrived at the Cape. This suggests that, if he wasn't buried at sea, he would have been buried in "Kaapstad". As this statement had been added already in 2006 to the Dutch wikipedia (by an anonymous one-time editor, unfortunately), I suspect that I copied it from that article in October 2007. That is a surprise, as I enjoy figuring these things out from archives and I normally try to verify it myself. Good catch, as wikipedia "facts" have the habit of becoming the "truth" over time. I've already adjusted the text. Afasmit (talk) 22:43, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Afasmit, I will remove it on the Dutch wikipedia as well. Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 22:51, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vincent van Gogh[edit]

I will not re-revert if you re-delete "When Pablo Picasso was shown this photograph on January 6, 1958 he remarked: What a striking resemblance to the young Rimbaud, especially the keen and penetrating eyes." Anomalocaris (talk) 07:25, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Context mix-up[edit]

Bear with me. I figured out what happened. There are two totally different ways of interpreting this sentece: the way I perceived it was that the game was basically a driving contest and the players would get a couple dozen golf balls and try to get more balls than their opponent into a target. the way you interpreted it ( and the way it was meant to be interpreted) was that the game was more like golf in which the players tried to get the ball to the target in the least number of strokes.username 1 (talk) 15:08, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jan Arkesteijn. You have new messages at OrangeDog's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Just to let you know I have cleaned up and copyedited the Zenú article per your request at WP:PNT. I think in some places the article, which was very interesting, may need more citations/references, but I haven't tagged it for that. Textorus (talk) 20:20, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Madame Vestris' image[edit]

In the article Lucia Elizabeth Vestris you have substituted a new image of the singer in women’s clothes fot the previous one en travesti. The caption still reads: “Engraving: Eliza Vestris in The Alcaid”. Since the part performed in that opera was the breeches role of Felix, there is an apparent inconsistency (probably you just forgot to correct the caption). I wish, however, to call your attention to the fact that an image en travesti might turn out to be more significant of Madame Vestris’ operatic career than an ordinary female one. Excuse my Italianate English. Cheers.--Jeanambr (talk) 12:33, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You are quite right, I forgot to adjust the caption. My only consideration for changing the image is that the facial structure in the previous picture is very general, and I doubt whether it honoustly represents Lucia Vestris, since there is no source. The new picture is somewhat better, although we will not know whether it is a true representation of her untill we find a detailed portrait painting. I leave it up to you to change the caption or to revert the image. I will not interfere. Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 13:50, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There might also be the option to add the image in the text where The Alcaid is addressed. Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 13:58, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. --Jeanambr (talk) 16:43, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Photo manipulation, and more[edit]

I'd have hoped that the University of Toronto would improve that article, but saw little sign of that. You then did the work to it that I should have done. Thank you!

It seems to be part of this, which has an alarmingly long list of articles being worked on by students at the University of Toronto. Feeling rather guilty about the way my hesitation in Photo manipulation had led to more work for you, I chose Ray-Ban more or less at random.

In a word, ugh.

Granted, there's probably not much to say about some sunglass brand, but presumably the students chose this for themselves.

Anyway, I wonder whether the bigger picture needs to be brought up on some discussion board. -- Hoary (talk) 02:18, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Chaplin image[edit]

Hello! Thank you for uploading a bigger image version of the Chaplin image here. I'm afraid I may have to revert it though - it is not exactly the same as the image from the source (ie, here), and that source gives a specific date and place of publication (which is important to prove it is definitely public domain). It also doesn't have markings over it! I think the resolution in the original version was of sufficient quality, so is it okay to revert back? --Lobo (talk) 16:27, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is the same photograph. No doubt about that. So, if the source info applies to your photo it applies to this photo as well. Or the other way around, if it does not apply to this photo, it does not apply to your upload either.Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 17:47, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well I'm not entirely sure, because on the file page I'm explicitly claiming that the image was published in Picture Show magazine (and this is very important, because the img is only PD if it was published before 1923)...that's why I feel more comfortable using that image, rather than one that clearly wasn't in a magazine. My eventual goal for the article is WP:FAC, where images are carefully scrutinised. That's why I kind of don't want to risk it...especially since the original was decent anyway. Does that makes sense? Sorry, I don't mean to be ungrateful or difficult. Perhaps you could upload your version as a different file? By the way, I reverted the image because you hadn't replied and I was in the process of updating the page, and then I came here and saw that you had since replied! I wasn't just reverting despite what you had said. --Lobo (talk) 19:33, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Does it make sense, you ask. The only thing I am trying to make clear is, that these two images are unquestionably the same, they have a common source. It can't be anything else than the picture the photographer took at the Witzel Studios in LA. So the information you refer to that proofs it is in the public domain is just as valid for my upload. The image can't be at the same time in and not in Public Domain. Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 19:45, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I suppose you're right, there's no way anyone can say it's not PD. But if we're going to change it, the source link given needs to be the actual one where you got the picture (and then I will add the BFI info separately). I'm wondering if we can find one like yours that doesn't have markings on it though... --Lobo (talk) 20:26, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry, I will re-upload it as a different file. Jan Arkesteijn (talk) 20:28, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Emil Wolfgang Menzel, Jr. requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Status and Advice[edit]

As reviewing administrator, I have taken care of it. We have a template for this, Template:OA-attribution , and it should have been used. I placed it with the right parameter. Our template system and ways of indicating copyright are somewhat baroque, and it took me a while to find the correct one myself. However, see my note on the article talk p: it is usually best to do some substantial rewriting to make it clear that the authors of the judgements of value expressed are the particular people , who are certainly authoritative on the matter, Hopkins and Washburn. Information icon Hello Jan, I feel that you made a mistake, In astronomy Sunspots are where Solar Flares originate, I only added a external reference that I feel is appropriate. I still think that this little contribution was ok and added to the page in a good way, the comments, about vandalism are rude, how can you moderate and pass fair judgment if your not bias to the subject? Do you know what a Solar Flare is without looking it up? I guess all you do is troll Wikipedia, I am a Astronomer, avid stargazer, I know a lot about space! Can you say that? Thank Jan Arkesteijn for your message, I am pretty new on the Wiki and I came to know about the Sunspot through this article only good work, Do world need to know about my pic/work not necessarily and it does not help me any way I don't take pic for my living. My only intention to put on Wiki was to put some clean Pic (Under Gallery which I don't see) taken with normal camera so that it will be more connecting with the viewer and give a message that it can be viewed easily need not have high end equipment as most the current pics are from NASA. But anyway Looks like that pic is not making sense on this post. So not planning to re-attempt to load it. I am glad people like you are so active and trying to keep the wiki content clean and accurate. Orphaned non-free image File:Karen Alexander - Voyager.jpg[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Karen Alexander - Voyager.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:21, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Karen Alexander - Voyager.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Karen Alexander - Voyager.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Aspects (talk) 14:47, 18 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
