Image needed!

Okay, so here's the thing: There's a debate on Talk:Bathrobe about the image being used in the article (currently Dfrg's)... now don't go running to flood cabal support, that'd be bad times, poor show. What we need is an image that would be more appropriate for the article, as Nick smiling and having a thumbs up apparently makes the shot inappropriate. Of course, the image that started the debate was... just... wow. Srs. I'm srsly. But ya, so we need something on the opposite side of the spectrum from that one. The proposed alternative is a little less pleasing to the eye and does not represent the luxurious appeal of the bathrobe, considering Bounty makes paper towels thicker than this. :P So get your bathrobes and cameras. Take a shot, no thumbs up, crop out your face. Just a bathrobe on your body, tied at the waist the way bathrobes should be... the image is about the bathrobe, not you. So go forthwith and create awesome!

The Illustrious and Honourable Bathrobe Cabal of Wikipedia may do something constructive for the 'pedia after all! *tear* LaraLove 15:34, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Oh, and submit your image here, not in the article. We'll link to the article talk page and get responses from those involved in the discussion. LaraLove 15:41, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Seriously, why not do what all the Lingerie articles do. Hang bathrobe on a hanger, sling the hanger over the doorframe, and take a picture of the bathrobe with no one in it. Mine looks crappy on a hanger, so perhaps someone with one of those plush terry-cloth models could do it. Just do that... --Jayron32.talk.contribs 16:14, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
Yea, that's a good idea. Nightgown is a good example. Hayley, yours is plush and a good color. Mine and A4T both have plush white, which I don't think would look as good. LaraLove 16:29, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
Would this work? Image:BathrobeHungup.jpg GlassCobra 22:22, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
Nice, but the color of HMWith's shows the robe better. Damn nice door tho. That sounds so weird, but we have nothing but crap quality white doors here. LaraLove 05:18, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Actually, they were converted into assets and repackaged as FBOs (forum-backed securities) and sold to "qualified institutional investors", including some European banks. They'll be back, though. - Revolving Bugbear 19:37, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

They've been moved to a different server and upgraded. But there's an issue now. I'm not sure. I've got to go to work, but they should hopefully be up around midnight. LaraLove 20:17, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

No, seriously, that's cool. Is this just a software switch? What will be upgraded? Is this just a one time thing, or will this happen periodically? Why am I asking all these questions? Justin(Gmail?)(u) 21:33, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Calm down. I hope so.
It's a software upgrade of the forums. PHPbb -> vB. Hopefully a one-time thing. I have no idea. LaraLove 02:23, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Situation

I've recently heard about a serious situation that developed when someone found out the real name, employment, etc., of an Arbcom member/admin and -- well, he eventually exercised his right to vanish. (As I understand it, people have been asked to not discuss the details.) Is anyone concerned about having his/her photograph available here? I'm getting a little queasy about it, but not so much that I want to not be a member of the BRC. If it wouldn't be interpreted as incipient schizophrenia, I'd suggest that I'm of two minds about it. Accounting4Taste:talk 23:25, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Maybe I haven't been here long enough, but I don't quite understand the anonymity concerns of some editors unless they're an Arbcom member or editing controversial topics. I guess it's all a matter of personal choice in regards to privacy. APK yada yada 23:42, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Okay, I guess I'm a goof for two reasons, and the other one is what I mentioned above. Accounting4Taste:talk 01:12, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
There is an issue with admins being outed on various sites. It's a matter of how much you think it matters. What information you've made available about yourself, etc. I'm not worried about it. It's whatev. LaraLove 09:12, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
As I understand it, the picture was only an issue because the ArbCom member was, in fact, a fairly high profile guy, and having apicture to his name allowed him to be tracked down. Considering that none of us are as well-known in the real world or on WP as he was, I don't think we really have a problem. Like Jayron said though, it's totally okay if someone feels uncomfortable having their picture up; we obviously put privacy first. GlassCobra 09:19, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Ya, there's plenty of people that hang out with us that aren't on the page. LaraLove 09:42, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Privacy concerns

O,hai. So basically, there's been great concern lately with privacy. People being outed, ED articles, death threats, etc. Members are dropping off the page like flies. So, well, we lose someone from the page, but the membership doesn't drop. I spoke to Riana about this before her internet was lost and we agreed that if there were anymore concerns in the near future (which I think this is), then the page should be deleted. With the recent death threats to one of our members, I think it's time. Images can still be hosted on bathrobecabal.org and they'll be visible to members only. Pretty much everything we do here, we can do there.

Another option is to just delete the images while keeping the rest. Again, keeping images hosted on the website. Thoughts? LaraLove 00:41, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Being one of the ones that quit (mostly due to ED, but not all privacy), I think that the Wikipedia end should go - too many people can get hurt. I think it's getting too ridiculous for words if someone got death threats - for all the crap I've been through with my ED article, I never got death threats. Sceptre (talk) 00:57, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Speaking as an admin both here and on Commons, I can delete anyone's image that needs to go if they can't do it themselves. Just drop me a line and it'll be gone. EVula // talk // // 01:04, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, my whole album of images is already up in my ED article, so I'm not worried about mine, haha. But for those who are worried about losing the control to have your images deleted, now would be the time. LaraLove 01:06, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Actually, perhaps we could reduce the on-wiki page to simply the list of off-wiki stuff, and handle official memberships through those venues? Like, perhaps, applying via IRC contact with a member or something? I would be fine if this was reduced to a rump page, and all user info and membership info was removed from here, and perhaps kept at the Forum or at Lulzwiki or something? Would that be reasonable? That way, we can ditch all of the silly picture stuff, which does not bother me, but has become a serious concern for enough members to consider dropping it all together? Ideas? --Jayron32.talk.contribs 01:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

If you're worried about privacy, take your pic off here, and EVula or me can delete off Commons. Otherwise, I dunno if a massive overhaul of how things work is the best idea, if you still want to keep the idea of the BRC running onwiki. Deletion works too, if you like... not having my pic up there, I probably don't have as strong an opinion either way. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 01:31, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Extremely Extreme Support for leaving the page here - My privacy has never mattered, heck I have had a pic on my userpage for quite a long time. But if it is just pic privacy that people are worried about why not just leave their sig on the page, and remove their pictures. I personally support keeping this page as is, and perhaps if some people are scared about their pics being seen, they can remove their pics. But I don't see why people have to leave the cabal just because of privacy concerns. Just a quick note: I myself don't care how much the BRC gets picked on, I think more people like this "cabal" than hate it, if I ever get an ED article on myself (no matter how unlikely that may seem ;) ) I would just ignore it and move on, srsly if people don't have anything better to do than mock someone else, their opinion isn't really that important about anything. --Chetblong (talk) 02:26, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

How does the Illustrious Bathrobe Cabal of Wikipedia exist off-Wikipedia? ^_^ I think it should be entirely personal choice. I'm one of those idiots who was entirely careless with her pinfo, and now my surname, pic and enough info to piece together a fairly accurate portrait of who and where I am exists on the internets. I really couldn't care anymore. Perhaps because I've reprioritised my life so that WP isn't in the top 5 (or even 10) list of things to take care of, I don't know. But at this point I could give a shit. So, do what you need to do for yourself and no one will think any less of you. ~ Riana 02:42, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

I might have been the first BRCian to express a little concern about privacy, but what's left of my mind is now made up. I was trying to think of how to express this, but I can't think of any better phrasing than my learned friend, above -- "I could give a shit." (Not, I hasten to add, with reference to my cherished membership in the BRC, but with respect to my privacy concerns.) I also approve of the sentiments elegantly expressed in "do what you need to do for yourself and no one will think any less of you" -- I definitely respect anyone's personal choices on privacy, not having walked the proverbial mile in their shoes. So if the BRC has to only exist offwiki, okay, I'm good with that too. One thing, though: as near as I can tell, every single member of the BRC works bloody hard at a thankless and unpaid task, donating hours of thought and effort for every second spent with the BRC, and if we choose to blow off a little steam like this -- instead of chewing n00bs into microscopic bits, or escalating edit wars to the nuclear level -- I figure we're entitled. Just my 2¢, since I'm old and cranky. Accounting4Taste:talk 03:15, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Going into BRC, I knew that, like any other site, letting your picture flow through the tubes has inherent risks. However, if I start compromising my happiness for the remote chance that something bad might happen to me some day because someone, somewhere. somehow gets pissed off at me about doing my job on a fairly universally laudable charitable project for which I've volunteered, then I might as well stop volunteering for any charitable organization all together. Instead, I take threats and insults more as compliments, because they're baseless. As far as I know, no editor on Wikipedia has so far been physically harmed over an edit he's made; therefore, it's statistically improbable that one will be in the near future. Compound that with the types of people I hang around, my nosy neighbors, and being the heir to my family's gun collection, it makes it even less probable that the recipient of violence would be me as much as it would instead be the dude(s) stalking me. :P Worst case, people make ripples when they try to track others down; and, ripples can usually be traced back to the source. ;) --slakrtalk / 04:18, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Showing up a little late to the conversation, but I pretty much feel the same as Slakr and AfT above. I honestly could give a shit. It is really a non-issue for me, and though I have considered the privacy issues when I first joined the BRC, I consider it to be a very minor point. Trusilver 16:06, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
