Articles for Creation July 2021 Backlog Elimination Drive

Hello GTrang:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running until 31 July 2021.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
There is currently a backlog of over 2500 articles, so start reviewing articles. We're looking forward to your help!

Uniform Resource Identifier

Uniform Resource Identifier, an article that you or your project may be interested in, has been nominated for an individual good article reassessment. If you are interested in the discussion, please participate by adding your comments to the reassessment page. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status may be removed from the article. Aircorn (talk) 23:52, 17 August 2021 (UTC)

Non-free image file use on 2020 Summer Olympics pictograms

(@東京オリンピック1964: as well) I noticed that the two of you were attempting to add 50 non-free images to the 2020 Summer Olympics pictograms article. Please be aware that per WP:NFCC #3a, the use of such a huge number of non-free images would almost never be acceptable. Indeed, using 50 non-free images in a single article would place this article at the #1 article for non-free content usage on the entire project (see this daily report for proof). Extreme usage requires extreme justification. That's not present here. If each and every single one of those pictograms were discussed using reliable, secondary sources then a justification might (might) exist to include all of these pictograms as separate files, but even then such justification would be weak at best and almost certainly wouldn't permit such a massive use of non-free files.

Between the two of you the removal of these non-free content by the bot was described as vandalism, and an attempt was made to disable the bot from doing this work [1]. The bot has been duly authorized to perform this work by the community. Our policy at WP:NFCC #10c requires a separate, specific non-free use rationale for each use of the item. A single rationale can not cover the uses in all cases where an image is used. So, for example, the use of File:Rowing, Tokyo 2020.svg on this article would have required a specific rationale for use on this article. The existing rationale on the image description page is only for Rowing at the 2020 Summer Olympics. No rationale was present on the image description pages for use on this article. Thus, the bot removed the uses of the the images per policy. This is not vandalism, no is attempting to deny the bot from doing this work an appropriate thing to do in this case.

The use of a non-free montage that is created by the copyright holder is allowable, per WP:NFLISTS and WP:NFG. Since such a montage exists at the copyright holder's website, we are able to use such a montage as a single image. I have uploaded that image to File:2020OlympicsPictograms.gif, have added a rationale for its use on 2020 Summer Olympics pictograms, and have added it to the article. I removed the non-free gallery and the remaining image in it, per what I have said above.

Please understand that Wikipedia takes the use of non-free content quite seriously. If you have questions about this, please let me know. Alternatively, you can ask questions at WT:NFC. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 18:08, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello GTrang,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Reply of this,
Hi. Do I need to add the template somewhere else? Or the template will add automatically if I nominate a page? Thanks.  ||  Tajwar.thesuperman  💬 08:44, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

@Tajwar.thesuperman: I have made a Github request at https://github.com/wikimedia-gadgets/twinkle/issues/1452. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 14:23, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Please don't

ever do anything like this again. It is incredibly tacky and unhelpful and can and will lead to a block. Taunting blocked users is counter productive, the best approach is WP:RBI. Beeblebrox (talk) 15:57, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Saw this just now and came to leave a note - Beeblebrox was much nicer than I would have been. ~TheresNoTime (to explain!) 21:05, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
And the edit has already been reverted by ScottishFinnishRadish. I have also thanked them for their revert, as well as the two of you posting in this section. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 04:11, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

Boo!

U2 tag

How odd - in the past I've not tagged the talk page for U2 as the deleting admin usually deletes both together (as is usual practice for most pages). Clearly something went a little wrong here - thanks for tagging it as it got left behind :) firefly ( t · c ) 17:37, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:38, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Misuse of Current events template

The Current Events archive is for incidents that Wikipedia contemporaneously recorded as news on the front page. Creating pages like this, cataloging events from before Wikipedia existed, constitutes a WP:HOAX. Dronebogus (talk) 13:06, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
