CIA articles (plural)

As you probably noticed, the main CIA article has gotten extremely long, and a number of editors are trying to make it shorter, containing the key details of legal foundation, structure, and general missions, with the details of intelligence collection, covert action, authorizations/orders for covert action, etc., in subordinate articles.

Your material would be great in CIA transnational human rights actions#Torture and rendition. I've copied your contribution there, and, if you agree, would like to have just a link to the subject in the main article.

Template

I'm aware of the template, since I'm the one who actually created it. Just like the template {{9-11 hijackers}} however, you'll notice we do list the "wrongly-accused" on the same template as the "guilty". This is actually for a good reason, because it keeps our "mistakes" visible and in the public conscious - they may see Omar Khadr listed on the template, but they won't automatically assume he's a "terrorist", maybe he'll be proven to be "another Arar". I am however, thinking of separating the template into two parts - one specific to pre-9/11 (Canada and Terrorism) and one specific to post-9/11 ("Canada in the War on Terror"). I'm not sure if there are enough to justify a template, there are I believe five minors who were detained at Gitmo, including Khadr (btw, I'm trying to get Omar Khadr to featured status this month, would appreciate your constructive criticism and discussion on the talk page) - and I've been looking at army reports trying to find the name of the kid who shot Nathan Chapman, but no luck thusfar. Much appreciated, your edit actually enticed me to look a little harder for an article about the test itself, which luckily seems to be quite thorough. I think I'll try to contact Trupin and Matthews, see if there's any chance they'll release their findings into the Creative Commons so they can be put up on Wikisource and linked from the article. Since you haven't made any major edits to the article, you're qualified to be the deciding vote on whether it gets "Good Article" status - which is the first step towards Featured status. Personally, I think it's well beyond GA right now, and it's more of a "formality" in my mind - but the details are at Wikipedia:Good article nominations. If you think it passes, you remove it from the list and add {{GA|~~~~~}} to Talk:Omar Khadr, if you think it has some unresolved issues then it's {{GAReview|status=onhold}} on the list beneath Khadr's name, or if you think it fails, you remove it from the list and add {{FailedGA|~~~~~}} to Talk:Omar Khadr. Khadr II

References to Omar Khadr's upbringing were deleted by Speaker for the Dead, and he deleted the POV banners placed on the article by another contributor. Thus, the POV banner you noted. I've responded to your comments, and would appreciate it if you had would have some time to provide feedback.

As an aside, I get abusive remarks hurled at me for questioning anything that Speaker for the Dead says. For instance, I was told I needed to study Logic 101, and when I explained that I was studying law at Cambridge University, the response was to question my academic credentials.--Dlafferty (talk) 10:54, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Saint John's School of Alberta article

Hi Fremte, To answer your questions, the child welfare investigation I obtained through a freedom of information request to the Alberta government, child services . There are also other documents of interest from the same series of FOI requests I will post. Also I have other interesting material that would round out the article nicely. The world authority on the history of Saint John's schools is Stephen Riley. My archive is tiny in comparison. Nonetheless, I will keep posting till all interesting material I have is exhausted. Create a [Kelly Kettle] page.

Hi Fremte,

I am writing to you as I wish to create a page for [Kelly Kettle] however am experiencing difficulties at the moment as the page has been protected.
There had been Intellectual Property Rights Infringement whereby searches for [Kelly Kettle] & [Volcano Kettle] were been redirected incorrectly to the [Storm Kettle] page. These Redirects have now (correctly) been removed. However, a page I had created for [Kelly Kettle] was taken down and now the [Kelly Kettle] is PROTECTED and I am unable to edit it.

There seems to be a lot of confusion and misunderstanding here by the Administrators and as such, I am only pleased to point out the following facts which should help clarify the situation:

Sharon Cawley (talk) 16:41, 7 June 2008 (UTC) 1. The Brands [Kelly Kettle] & [Volcano Kettle] are Registered Trademarks of the Kelly Kettle Company in Ireland.
2. The [Volcano Kettle] is the Generic name for these type of kettles (it dates back to the 1890's in Ireland) and is now owned by the Kelly Kettle Company which has been trading for over four generations. In the early 1920's similar type kettles appeared in New Zealand (The Thermette) and Afghanistan/Mongolia (Samovar - as pictured in a recent edition of the National Geographic magazine) and both are believed to have been slight variants of the [Volcano Kettle]
3. The [Storm Kettle] is not the generic name for these type kettles as the brand was only established in the 1990's and is a direct copy of the [Kelly Kettle]
4. Kelly Kettles are sold all over the world and I know from converstaions with Patrick Kelly, Director of the Kelly Kettle Company, that they have in excess of 40,000 new visits to their website every month.
5. The Kelly Kettle has been described in Irish Media recently as a 'Global Microbrand' i.e. a Brand which is recognised world wide in niche markets.

As such, I want to create a separate page for them. The Kelly Kettle is extremely popular globally and I don't see why the page should be protected or why there were ever redirects to a copy Brands page in the first place!

Please let me know what needs to be done here to unprotect the page so that I can insert Text and Pictures

Electric Bicycle Laws

hello. I'm trying to clean up the article on electric bicycle laws. I do not have a very in depth understanding of Canada's governmental structure and this is slowing me down. If you could give me some good references to help me understand the province vs. Federal law dynamic in relation to traffic it would be very helpful.

Thank you. It seems from your explanation to be similar to the US federal state model. I had found a Federal definition and safety standards and was debating reorganizing the section on Canada a little after I became more familiar with Provincial law. I'm taking a similar approach to the EU as well. if you could compare the United states Federal section pre my editing to the section now it would show you what I'm hoping to do. In the future, if you would like to make changes to our Wikipedia entry for Pawistik Lodge, please ensure that they are edited for accuracy and grammar. For instance, Pawistik Lodge is solely owned by Scott Jeffrey. In previous changes you made, Noreen Robb was mentioned as an owner.

What Scott is trying to do is provide a geographically and historically accurate picture of the area surrounding the lodge, while still informing people of the existence of the lodge. If you refer to our website, you will see advertising as it ought to be. To label this Wikipedia entry as blatant advertising is inaccurate. Our entry strives for the same kind of balance as in the following links, and I think we succeed rather well. Perhaps you should consider editing the entries for the following hotels, which are owned by large chains such as Delta and Fairmont, and which are quite explicit in their claims regarding the properties they own and operate:

Kelly Kettle - redirecting to smaller Brand of 'storm kettle'

Hi there Fremte,

I am not particularly familiar with using Wikipedia so apologies if this message comes across in the wrong format etc.

I write to you regarding my company and brand Kelly Kettle® (Also Known as the Volcano Kettle®). Both of the aforementioned brands are our registered Trademarks in the E.U., Canada & the U.S. We have invested considerable funds over recent years to vigourously protect our IP rights as copies of our kettles occasionally appear on the market and the producers of these copies invariably try and sell under our Trademarks on E-Bay, Amazon, etc.
Our company has been trading for four generations and our products continue to grow in popularity every year. We ship to vitually every country in the world and are proud of our long established brand.
The purpose of this correspondence is to ascertain as to why it is that a Wikipedia search for our Global Brand Kelly Kettle causes the visitor to land on a page titled 'Storm Kettle'.

The 'Storm Kettle' is a UK based brand which is much smaller than our Brand. We currently sell 10 x times more kettles every year than this competitor brand and we widen that gap every year. I know this because, one of our Subcontractors also manufacture the 'Storm Kettle' so I am aware of how many units the company sells per annum.
The 'Storm Kettle' is a direct copy of our product and the brand is only about 10yrs old. This fact is undisputable - why? Well the director of the Eydon Kettle Company who provide the 'Storm Kettle', used to be a Director of the Kelly Kettle Company until he was ejected from the company after been found guilty (in the U.K. Courts) of wrongdoing. When he was removed from the Kelly Kettle Company he set up a competing business and hence the 'Storm Kettle' brand was born.....i.e. born decades after the Kelly Kettle.
The 'Storm Kettle' is a Registered Trademark in the UK only. The Brand is not widely known outside of the UK and it is not registered in any other jurisdiction which confirms my assertion that they trade very little outside of the UK.

How 'Storm Kettle' came to be used as a Generic Name I do not know. I removed the redirect on 'Kelly Kettle' a few days ago but it is back again. I find it intensely frustrating (to put it mildly!) that our long established and well protected, global brand, is treated as a afterthought to a much much smaller and now shrinking UK based Brand. If anything, the Article page should be titled Kelly Kettle with any searches for 'Storm Kettle' redirecting to the more Generic 'Kelly Kettle' article.

I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on this matter. I know that Wikipedia is an extremely popular and important source of information for Millions of users every day. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to my company, that our Brand is given the recognition that it duly deserves.

If the name of an inanimate or non-human entity is disputed by two jurisdictions and one or more English-language equivalents exists, use the most common English-language name.

Identification of common names using external references

A number of methods can be used to identify which of a pair (or more) conflicting names is the most prevalent in English.

> The Google test. Using Google's advanced search option, search for each conflicting name and confine the results to pages written in English; also exclude the word "Wikipedia" (as we want to see what other people are using, not our own usage). Note which is the most commonly used term.

(1) Google Test - 'Storm kettle' dries up about Page 15 (using 20 listings per page) (approx 281-300 results) and many of the entries on the previous pages refer to Kelly Kettle / Storm Kettles in the same entries with more starting to make referenece to a different product altogether - the 'Storm'Electric Kettle.
'Kelly Kettle' search goes to Page 34 (again 20 listings per page) before the search starts to get muddled with other items. (approx 661-680 results)

(2) Have checked with https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordTool to compare the numbers of 'Google' Searches for the different Trademarks. results are as follows:
'Kelly Kettle' = averaged 9,900pm over past year (118,800 pa)
'Volcano Kettle' = averaged 1,900pm over past year (22,800 pa)
'Storm Kettle' = averaged 2,900pm over past year (34,800 pa)
Together, our 'Kelly' & 'Volcano' Brands had 141,600 searches as opposed to 34,800 searches for the 'Storm' brand (4 times as many)

(3) www.kellykettle.com enjoys a Google Page Rank of 8/10 whereas www.eydonkettle.com (stormkettle website) is only ranked as 3/10. PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. The higher the ranking, the more important that Google perceives the page.

The wording on the existing article is written in a Neutral Manner to which I am agreeable. However, based on the overwhelming evidence provided above, coupled with a mountain of empirical evidence, I am adamant that the the article in wikipedia and current re-direct is a gross injustice to the Kelly Kettle and lends unacceptable Brand support to a small trademark which can lay no claim whatsoever to been the 'Generic name' for our type of kettles.
I respectfully suggest that the article should be changed back to its original name Kelly Kettle with any searches for 'Storm Kettle' redirecting to the 'Kelly Kettle' article page. The existing wording on the page is neutral so a couple of minor edits would be all that is required to complete the correction.
I look forward to hearing back from you and to your assistance in this matter.

New 10,000 Challenge for Canada
