Nanotechnology selected content

Hey Dank, do you have any favorite nanotechnology articles or images? I'm making a list of selected content for Portal:Nanotechnology and I'm interested in your feedback. Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 21:46, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

The list of articles looks good to me, but it's not my field. Great work. - Dank (push to talk) 21:54, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments on the review page of Spanish conquest of Guatemala. Malleus had pointed out that with the article being so long, it will be difficult to find reviewers, so I would greatly appreciate it if you could revisit the review... Best regards, Simon Burchell (talk) 08:15, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Well, now you've got supports from Malleus, who looked at the whole thing carefully, and Eisbfnore, who looked at a lot of specific points ... I'm going to be surprised if any of the delegates holds the article up for lack of prose review, but if they do, let me know. - Dank (push to talk) 12:50, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

OK, thanks Dank. Simon Burchell (talk) 19:37, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your feedback on the article; it has just been promoted. As always, it has come out of the review process in better shape than it went into it. All the best, Simon Burchell (talk) 15:58, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
I see the reviewers really loved that one! - Dank (push to talk) 16:48, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Favour to ask in relation to the Air raids on Japan article

Hi Dan, I'm planning to nominate the Air raids on Japan article for FA status in the near future. Would you be able to copyedit it prior to this? The article is larger and more complex than most FACs, and hasn't been significantly edited by anyone other than myself (though several editors have helped out) so an extra pair of eyes on it before it goes to FAC would be really valuable. Regards, Nick-D (talk) 07:33, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Sure, I can do that, but I like to take FACs in the order they show up, so let me finish the current crop of FACs first (I'm almost done). Please let me know when everything's been done but the copyediting, so that you can put it up at FAC as soon as I'm finished. - Dank (push to talk) 15:19, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
OK, and thanks! I'm going to work on the last section of the article, and after that it will be good to go. I don't plan on touching the rest of the article until it goes to FAC. Nick-D (talk) 22:33, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi Dan, I've finished my changes to the article's text. I'd greatly appreciate any help you could give with copy editing. Any comments on the article's content/structure/etc would also be much appreciated. Nick-D (talk) 05:29, 12 March 2012 (UTC)
Sure, I should get to it today. - Dank (push to talk) 17:18, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Werner Hartenstein

May I ask you to have another look at the article as it stands now? I depleted it as much as possible from German language. Currently left are the German military ranks and one or two other instances where I am unsure how best to present the information. Example: University of Freiburg versus Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. MisterBee1966 (talk) 15:36, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Sure, I should get to it today. - Dank (push to talk) 17:18, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Best practice

Hi Dank, I was thinking of creating something like a best practice guideline for writing German military biographies here. Maybe this could be a starting point for a more generic help page. I want to avoid feeling like a dork again. (Is this an appropriate colloquial way of saying you feel stupid in English). Where do you think this is best placed and how to best involve potential contributors? MisterBee1966 (talk) 08:29, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Sorry for the trouble, and I don't see how you're at fault; you wrote an article, put it up for reviews, and the reviewers liked it ... you were doing fine till you got to me :). I think the best place for the guideline you're suggesting would be the Academy; Eyeserene may have suggestions about how to proceed. - Dank (push to talk) 14:14, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
I started a collection of "best practices" here. Please feel free to add, change or comment. Thanks for your support MisterBee1966 (talk) 08:10, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. - Dank (push to talk) 12:05, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

I believe User:Nikkimaria just Pinged you, but you might want to check with her first. Palm_Dogg (talk) 11:49, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

She's pinging you, I think, she's saying you haven't responded to what she's asking for. Have another look at everything she's hasn't struck yet. - Dank (push to talk) 12:15, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Bingo, though it's much closer now, so you could probably jump in if you want, Dank. Palm dogg, check out this script to see what I'm complaining about with that point. Nikkimaria (talk) 12:41, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Fixed all your comments. Palm_Dogg (talk) 23:55, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I try to distribute my copyediting time evenly, and I'm out of time on this one, but hopefully someone will jump in and finish up. If not, I recommend Milhist's A-class review. - Dank (push to talk) 00:01, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
OK. Could you please at least annotate that I addressed your specific concerns on the page, just so other reviewers know that? Thanks! Palm_Dogg (talk) 00:41, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Sure. - Dank (push to talk) 01:18, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Can you take a look at my latest edits and let me know if they've satisfactorily addressed your last concerns? Palm_Dogg (talk) 16:41, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

You did, but I'm still opposing, I believe the article would benefit quite a lot from a trip through A-class review before FAC. - Dank (push to talk) 17:26, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

GOCE FAC requests

Hi Dan. Your invitation to consider FAC clerking reinded me that some time before the end of January you said of the FAC Requests Page, "I think we could do more with it, but I don't want to pull anyone away from the January copyediting drive". The thread is here. As work on those requests has all but ground to a halt, I was wondering what those ideas were. I don't think it would be too disruptive to the drive to discuss them in the right place. Some of the GOCE newbies are not of the calibre we'd want to attract there, but there are one or two (User:Allens, who has taken on Astatine, being a good example). What do you think? Best regards, Simon. --Stfg (talk) 22:01, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

I can understand that an editor might not want to take on a sometimes demanding job without the kinds of support that volunteer organizations are generally expected to provide to volunteers ... thus my suggestions at WT:FAC#Clerking. I'd like to wait before soliciting help until I can get a better sense of what help the helpers can expect. - Dank (push to talk) 23:44, 13 March 2012 (UTC) I did intend to talk about FAC clerking a lot sooner at GOCE, but everyone at WT:FAC got distracted and then worn out by the RFC

Thanks Nikki, you're sweeter than a fuzzy navel. - Dank (push to talk) 22:17, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

GOCE March drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

The Content Review Medal of Merit
Dank, thanks for all the hard work you've done at FAC. Your reviews are quite valuable to the nominators and to the community. I also appreciate your movements toward process reform. Laser brain (talk) 14:48, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Andy, I really appreciate that. - Dank (push to talk) 15:56, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Actually ... all I've asked is that we put more effort into finding people to do the work, not sure if that counts as "reform", but I'll take the compliment :) - Dank (push to talk) 12:47, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Keep up the good work! Ling.Nut3 (talk) 08:10, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Human Robot Interaction

Hi Dank I reached your talk page looking for the editor of the Human Robot Interaction article.

Is that you the editor?

I am new to wikipedia, so I do not know if to post on the Talk page of Human robot interaction or here on your talk.

I have been studying quite a lot of for an on going project on an interactive robot.

So I think I can contribute

best regardsBarattini (talk) 13:34, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Best of luck. I haven't been involved with robotics articles for a while. - Dank (push to talk) 13:35, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

May Revolution

I have nominated the article May Revolution for FAC at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/May Revolution/archive4. As you made a review of the article in the past, it would be useful if you could check it again, as it is an obscure topic outside of Argentina and previous nominatons did not atract enough reviewers. All comments are welcome. Cambalachero (talk) 02:00, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Sure, I look at all the Milhist FACs, unless another copyeditor beats me to it. - Dank (push to talk) 02:56, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Barnstar time

Hi, Dank. I was wondering if you could give me and Stfg a hand with the barnstar distribution for the March copy edit drive? If you could distribute to the top third of the people on this page (up to the line), that would be great. If you are unable to help this time, please let me know, and we will look after it. Thanks. -- Dianna (talk) 01:07, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Do you guys do it by hand, use AWB, or use a bot? Milhist uses Edwardsbot for user page notifications. - Dank (push to talk) 12:47, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
I do it by hand. Not sure how Dianna does it (she gets through them much faster than me). Different people get different barnstars - would any bot be able to handle that? If you're very busy with other things, Dan, just say the word. I'll have time this evening. --Stfg (talk) 12:58, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
I know it's unusual for someone with around 50k edits, but I don't recall ever using AWB or a bot or script to help me with notifications to more than one user at a time. This is a bad time, my partner has surgery on Wednesday, but if it's a matter of getting up to speed on a bot, I don't mind learning. - Dank (push to talk) 13:10, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
What I meant but didn't say very well is that I can't see how a bot could do it. There are different barnstars for different achievements on the drive, they contain details like the username and number of articles edited, and in certain cases I replace the boilerplate with individual recognition of specific contributions, behind-the-scenes helpfulness and the like. I'm sorry you're having this bad time. Unless you tell me not to, I'll take the barnstar job over and will get going with it in about an hour from the time of this message. I hope all goes well on Wednesday. Best, Simon. --Stfg (talk) 17:20, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Simon, I really appreciate it. - Dank (push to talk) 17:24, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
I am gonna whip through a few of the simpler ones, and we'll be done in no time. -- Dianna (talk) 19:00, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

I have prepared an initial draft of our drive wrap-up newsletter at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Newsletters/April 2012; if you could find the time to check it over before it goes out, that would be super. Thanks. -- Dianna (talk) 21:26, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

GOCE March drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

A grammar doubt

Hi, Dank, how are you? Could you help me out with a small doubt? Take a look at this: "We are placed in the foreground of our society, causing even envy to your relatives and to my mine as well." Is "my mine" correct? Shouldn't it be only "mine"? Regards, --Lecen (talk) 02:05, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Lecen. You're right, but more idiomatic would be: "We have become prominent, making your relatives jealous, and mine as well." - Dank (push to talk) 02:32, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I really appreciate it! Regards, --Lecen (talk) 13:32, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

GOCE May copy edit drive

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their May 2012 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on May 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on May 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goal for the drive will be to eliminate January, February, and March 2011 from the queue. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa, and Stfg.

Main page appearance: SMS König

This is a note to let the main editors of SMS König know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on April 28, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 28, 2012. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

SMS König at sea

SMS König was the first of four König class dreadnought battleships of the German Imperial Navy during World War I. König (Eng: "King") was named in honor of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. Laid down in October 1911, the ship was launched on 1 March 1913. Construction on König finished shortly after the outbreak of World War I; she was commissioned into the High Seas Fleet on 9 August 1914. Along with her three sister ships, Grosser Kurfürst, Markgraf, and Kronprinz, König took part in most of the fleet actions during the war. As the leading ship in the German line on 31 May 1916 in the Battle of Jutland, König was heavily engaged by several British battleships and suffered ten large-caliber shell hits. In October 1917, she forced the Russian pre-dreadnought battleship Slava to scuttle itself during Operation Albion. König was interned, along with the majority of the High Seas Fleet, in Scapa Flow in November 1918 following the Armistice. On 21 June 1919, Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter gave the order to scuttle the fleet while the British guard ships were out of the harbor on exercises. König slipped beneath the waters of Scapa Flow at 14:00. Unlike most of the other scuttled ships, König was never raised for scrapping; the wreck is still sitting on the bottom of the bay. (more...)

Thanks

For the copyedits on Anderson, it's always great to have skilled editor look through my writing. I'll make sure to look through your changes for future reference. Mark Arsten (talk) 14:49, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Sure thing, and thanks for fixing my mistake concerning the 25,000 deaths. My goal is not to copyedit the same article twice if possible, and I see at the Peer Review that your article is probably headed to FAC, I'll finish up my work on it when it gets there. Btw, when supporting at FAC, put Support in bold, either at the start of a line that follows a blank line, or immediately after a bullet that starts the line. That makes it easier for the delegates to find when they're skimming a long page. - Dank (push to talk) 16:49, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Ahh, good point, I do tend to slip the support in at the end of sentences sometimes--I'll re-check FAC. Alright, hope to see you again when I nominate it there! Mark Arsten (talk) 17:21, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
