Possible bug with AWB Regex problem[edit]

Hello; the regex the AutoWikiBrowser uses seems to be a little glitchy with the pipe character. When not escaped in the replace field, it behaves oddly; when escape, it outputs \|. See the examples below.

Search: \[\[([\w: !/%.]*)\]\]
Replace: [[w:$1|$1]]
Result: [[Wikipedia]] → [[w:w:Wikipedia|Wikipedia]]
Search: \[\[([\w: !/%.]*)\]\]
Replace: [[w:$1\|$1]]
Result: [[Wikipedia]] → [[w:Wikipedia\|Wikipedia]]

If this is something I'm doing wrong, all the better; my regex knowledge is about a day old. :) Thanks. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 12:26, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm not 100% sure what you're trying to do but I think replacing \[\[(.*?)\]\] with [[w:$1|$1]] will have the desired effect. thanks Martin 12:38, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oddly, that doesn't return any results in the AutoWikiBrowser, although it works fine in my editor. I'm using an additional regex pattern to fix the problem I explained above, so it's easy to work around. :) // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 12:46, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
I think I have probably misunderstood what you are trying to do, but that pattern worked for me, the regex engine is definatly not buggy though, it is part of the .NET framework (although it may work differently from other regex programs). thanks Martin 12:53, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm moving my discussion archives to centralised archives on the Meta-Wiki, and converting wikilinks to interwiki links on the pages that will be moved. Discussion header updated. ;) // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 13:08, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Reform[edit]

Wikipedia began as an open effort to create an encyclopedia of the people, by the people, for the people. Sadly, its bureaucracy has put an end to those goals. To this end, we must promote a peaceful revolution to reform it. We must eliminate the undue influence of certain people and remake Wikipedia as a people's encyclopedia. We, the reformers, are led by TJWhite who endured only briefly before suffering an indefinite block. Visit his user page to see our ideology, roughly outlined. I for one do not condone his call to vandalism. Instead, by using the power of the people, we can reform wikipedia. Join us to recreate an encyclopedia where all are equal; an encyclopedia that does not strive to become Brittannica, but rather seeks to be a one of kind encyclopedia for all of the people of the world. Please pass this message in some form to as many people as you can. Secondly, petition for the unblock of TJWhite, the one who began our glorious movement. Finally, link to his page from your user page and express your sentiments for reform on your page. Thank You, fellow wikipedians. LaRevolution 15:32, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello - New User's 1st Article[edit]

Hello, Bluemoose,

I stumbled across one of your edits on the Magnolia Hotel, I believe. I am new to Wikipedia, and wrote my first article recently. Would you have interest in looking at it? I've had one other user take a look (Sputnikcccp) and he gave some great comments which I incorporated.

The article is here: Cathedral Church of Saint Matthew, Dallas, Texas

AWB functionality![edit]

Hi Bluemoose, I was using AWB a couple days ago and was alarmed to see that it wasn't alphabetizing interwikis or categories! This was a very useful feature of AWB, and I wonder if you know why it no longer does this? Thanks! Babajobu 06:42, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alphabetizing interwiki's is a good idea, but I'm not so sure about categories. For example on a football/baseball/basketball/etc players page it's probably better to have their year of birth coupled with the Living people/year of death category, and keep together all of the categories for each of the teams the player has played for. For example look at Doug Flutie, the teams he has played for are intermixed with the places he is from categories, and it makes for a random chaotic presentation. Qutezuce 06:50, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, on certain pages I suppose a non-alphabetical listing may make some intuitive sense. But in the vast majority of cases I think an alphabetical list of cats is better. Babajobu 07:16, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Alphabetical sorting can be turned on in the general menu. thanks Martin 09:29, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some botty/databasey thoughts[edit]

Hi Martin - I haven't talked to you in a while (i've been very busy), I hope everything is going well. I have recently thought of a couple of projects that exceed my technical abilities that I thought you might be interested in implementing. Obviously, if these are hard or take away from other things, feel free to ignore them. They may even be terrible ideas.

  1. There are a lot of category templates and wikiproject templates (e.g. {{Game theory}} and {{GameTheoryProject}}) which correspond to categories (e.g. Category:Game theory). It would be nice to have a bot that ensured that if an article had one of these then it has all three. Since Cat:Gt is pretty small, it is easily done by hand, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are other categories that would benefit from this.
  2. It would also be nice to have a list of unreferenced articles that don't have the {{unreferenced}} template. This could be acheived by checking for either a "References" section or an external link in the article. Perhaps a bot could add this template in those cases (although this might ruffle some feathers).
  3. Along the same lines it might be good to have a bot that removed the aforementioned template from articles that did have external links. (I've seen a few mistagged articles.)
  4. Lastly, it might be good to have a scan that checked people categories looking for articles that didn't have sort tags (e.g. [[Category:Game theorists]] instead of [[Category:Game theorists|Zollman, Kevin]]). These are likely to be mis-sorted in the category since most people should be sorted by something other than the first letter in the article title.

Phew. Sorry, these ideas have occured to me over time, and none of them seemed worth mentioning but now they added up it looks presumptous. Anyway, thanks for your time! --best, kevin [kzollman][talk] 03:26, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Martin - Thanks a lot for the speedy service :) I agree that the possibility for false positives for references is high, having a bot do the addition would be a bad idea. I don't have a sense for how many articles would have references but no external links or references section. Certainly some will. I thought of the sort key problem because I ALWAYS forget to add the sort key, I usually remember right after I save the article ;) --best, kevin [kzollman][talk] 17:44, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB downloading[edit]

Hello Bluemoose. I was reading the page on the AWB and looked at the type of program I must have to run it. It says I need Windows 2000 or XP to run it. I only have Windows Millenium Edition, do you think I should try to run AWB on it? Moe ε 02:15, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, it won't work. Martin 09:25, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Darn, your right. Well, I tried. Thanks anyways. Moe ε 21:24, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB for Wikimedia Commons[edit]

So, I'd like to use AWB on Wikimedia Commons. I've got a large-ish number of photos that I want to re-license (GFDL -> GFDL,CC), and I do not relish the thought of going through them by hand. How simple would it be to use AWB on the Commons? -- Phyzome is Tim McCormack 04:05, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I really don't know, it's possible it might work with just a very small change, on the other hand there are always unexpected problems. Martin 09:25, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB get from contribs problem[edit]

Bluemoose - Please see this message on my talk page. I think there is a glitch in the get from contribs option but I can't seem to find it. Do you know the problem? (I first thought that there might be a problem with all usernames beginning with a number, but I don't think so anymore.) --M@thwiz2020 23:48, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When I enter that username (09i70o7nj0h) it doesn't work, even though all others (including others beginning with a number) do work. Normally, the green progress bar scrolls until a list appear. With username 09i70o7nj0h, the progress bar disappears after about three seconds for me and the list never appears, not even in about five minutes. I have 2.0.0.7. --M@thwiz2020 00:09, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I updated the source code and built it using VCS. Now, it says "list complete" in the status bar but the box with the list of articles is empty. Once again, this is only for user 09i70o7nj0h. --M@thwiz2020 00:21, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry that I'm being persistent about this, but it's really late (for you). You don't have to worry about this - it's just for one username. Go to sleep now and, if you insist, work on it tomorrow (okay, well, technically later today). --M@thwiz2020 00:26, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2 Bot Visits[edit]

Hi, A page I created has had it's last two edits made by AWB assisted robots Bluebot & Smackbot ([1], [2]). It's good that you guys are cleaning up but couldn't you colloborate? What Smackbot did in visit 2, could have been done by Bluebot in visit 1. --kingboyk 02:55, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I have no control over what other people want to do. Martin 10:03, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1911 imports[edit]

Please don't edit so absent-mindedly. You imported 1911 text about François Gerard without checking if there is such an article in Wikipedia. Actually, there is - François Pascal Simon, Baron Gérard. It's not good to maintain forks for such a prolonged period of time. --Ghirla -трёп- 17:42, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that is extremely rude, to accuse someone who has invested such an enourmous amount of time into this project as editing absent-mindedly, I dont think a single mistake means someone is absent minded - it means they are human. I think it is pretty obvious how the mistake was made, the original article has such an obscure title that it would have been very difficult to find. Martin 17:48, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB acting weird[edit]

Hey Bluemoose. Every time I try to log in in AutoWikiBrowser, it just acts as a CPU hog. It happened on all three of my OSes (XP with IE7 Beta 2 preview, Windows Vista 5308, and Longhorn Server). Any ideas on how to fix this? Any help would be appreciated. — Alex (T|C|E) 04:22, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here is where AWB gets stuck during debug in VS2005 (infinite loop), if this helps:
while (webBrowser4.ReadyState.ToString() != "Complete") Application.DoEvents();
Alex (T|C|E) 04:47, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what the problem is, sorry. Martin 23:13, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh well. This behavior appeared in the 2.X builds. Seems like my system is having trouble with the web browser control for some reason. — Alex (T|C|E) 00:56, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The problem exists in 3 separate OS configurations which I assume are working properly. But there is a common (for you) web-browsing factor that's different than most other editors, your custom javascript.
I would suggest that you try blanking your custom monobook.js, clear your browser cache, and see if the problem goes away.

Wiki data-dump searcher[edit]

whenever I try to use that file you told me to it says (Problem on Data at root level is invalid. line 1, position 1.) What does that mean? ILovEPlankton 02:05, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like the data is corrupt or something, did you manage to unzip the file ok? Martin 09:56, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
yeah it unzipped fine.(I downloaded it aqain just to be sure and still got the error) ILovEPlankton 05:11, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The error message means it is not an xml file, or it is somehow a corrupted xml file, what program did you use to extract it? and how big was the extracted file? Martin 18:01, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I too have been having problems with the dump searcher. It crashes at the end of a search with a "WindowsApplication1 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." type box. Fortunatly, provided you don't press either the "Send Error Report" or the "Don't Send" buttons it is still possible to save the search results thus far collected. This happens with two recent database downloads, but does not happen with an earlier download that is less than 1Gbyte. Also, it does not happen with a >1Gbyte download provided the search is terminated by hitting the limited number of results. Gaius Cornelius 19:37, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What version are you using? Martin 19:39, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am using version 1.3.0.0 Gaius Cornelius 20:26, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, 1.6 is the newest, I have fixed a number of issues since then (+ more features and faster) Martin 20:29, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I will try an up-to-date version. By-the-way, would it be possible for dump searcher to execute at below normal priority by default? That would be handy. Gaius Cornelius 20:36, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In that case you will get a pleasant surprise in the newest version ;-) Martin 20:39, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Martin, yes the updates look good, I can change the priority and (best of all) there is a STOP button. I ran the new version at got a different error box that read "Problem on Total positivity Unexpected end of file has occurred. The following elements are not closed: page, mediawiki. Line 71880811, position 4. OK"
That sounds like a problem with the data dump as it is reporting a problem with the file, I think the software that does the dumps is only in development at the moment. In fact, I can reproduce the error by un-closing an element in the xml file. Martin 23:24, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I added a birth category, the data was given in the article, why would I have any sources? You should contact the person who actually made the article. thanks Martin 12:44, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I did that. I mentioned it to you because it appears to be a case where automation lends credence to what may be a hoax. Perhaps Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser could run a search engine query on an article's pagename as a primitive check on whether assisted edits such as categorization are warranted. Not a big deal, but I thought you should be aware of this aspect of using the AutoWikiBrowser. 66.167.136.6 13:29, 21 March 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Iranian C-130's[edit]

I see you reverted this inclusion of Iran as operators of the C-130, apparently you thought it was vandalism. During the the last Shah of Iran's reign, they bought several of the aircraft. According to the BBC story] about the Iranian Air Force C-130 crash in Tehran:

The Iranian air force is believed to have about 15 ageing US-made C-130s in operation, dating back to before the 1979 Islamic revolution and the US boycott of Iran.

As a fellow admin, when I see a strange edit by an anonymous editor, I also tend to assume it is a vandal at first blush. In this case, apparently it wasn't. Cheers. --rogerd 05:08, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks for that, but it does say "major operators", I doubt iran is a major operator, so maybe the word "major" should be removed? thanks Martin 09:34, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I hadn't noticed that. I think that it should be removed. How would we determine what constitutes a "major" operator? I see that Romania and Argentina are in the list. Do they have more than 15 aircraft? It sounds like an almost unverifiable thing. --rogerd 17:18, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good now, thanks. Martin 17:34, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blubot question[edit]

Does it run alone or is it uder supervision? The reason I ask is that it made this edit right after a series of vadalism that is visible in the difference. I'm not complaining about the bot but just wondering. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 17:11, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sometimes it is automatic, other times supervised, depending on what the task is. That particular task was automatic, as it is very simple, it was just highly unfortunate timing. thanks Martin 17:19, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Bluemoose -- I noticed Bluebot processed Japanese particles today, "fixing" a number of links via AWB, as shown by the diff here. Not to worry, the links aren't broken, but they weren't broken before either. An example:

  • [[Japanese_particles#bakari|bakari]] was changed to
  • [[Japanese particles#bakari|bakari]]

Note that both Japanese_particles#bakari and Japanese particles#bakari link successfully to the same page, with neither link being redirected. My suggestion is that you tweak Bluebot's code to ignore the underscore in links, as the extra edits simply add to server load and do nothing (that I can tell) to improve functionality. Thank you!  :) - Eiríkr Útlendi | Tala við mig 21:55, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, those changes were only incidental, just to clean up the syntax a bit, the real purpose of the edit was to change % encoded characters into proper text, in this case it changed %28 and %29 into ( and ) . Martin 22:11, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
p.s. see Wikipedia:Bad links for more info. Martin 22:14, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! There was only one link using parentheses, most of the way down the page, and I'd missed seeing it when I first looked over the edits. I appreciate the explanation. Cheers, Eiríkr Útlendi | Tala við mig 22:32, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You recently removed the good article tag from the Mammoth Cave National Park article. I did not put the tag there, or ask that the article be considered good, but I did do a lot of the contributions that probably propelled it to good article status. Is the removal of the good article tag a sign of the article's status being revoked, or just a cosmetic thing (having read the discussion mentioned above in this Talk page.) If the status has been revoked, shouldn't we also remove the corresponding template in the article's accompanying discussion page? Also, if you have a specific criticism for the article that motivated revoking the status, could you let me know where you think the weaknesses are? I wrote quite a bit off the top of my head, but I am going through my original sources right now and adding citations using the "ref" tag, and adopting a style for them that references an emerging annotated bibliography section that I'm creating at the same time. Please advise of other weaknesses. Alan Canon 20:13, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hi alan, its just a cosmetic thing. if you still have the GA tag on the discussion page, then its still a good article. Zzzzz 20:17, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's quite a lineup now for registration now for AWB. Could you approve (or not approve) them? Thanks. --Mets501talk 20:35, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good article[edit]

Hi. I added the "good article" template to the article "Shigin" after it had been listed as such for a few months. Bluebot removed this tagging, but I couldn't understand why from reading the link to the AWB article. Grateful if you could explain - preferably at my talk page. Many thanks. Hi, I was asked to remove all the good article templates, see User_talk:Bluebot#Removing_tags? to see the request and explanation. thanks Martin 22:43, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if you did this intentionally or not but if you did ok. You put planktonbot under approved users instead of bots. ILovEPlankton 23:16, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That was because the approval for the bot was on the basis that it was not automatic. Martin 23:26, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB sweep for Malcolm Fraser[edit]

Hey there Martin. Could you please run the AWB on this article as it is currently overlinked to articles on single years. Thanks. Harro5 08:21, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uncategorized articles[edit]

Hi Martin, have helped categorize the article on the Essays by Montaigne. I don't know what I should do next: delete the Essays from the list or just leave it there. Request for collaboration.[edit]

Hi,

I noticed that you recently began an effort which allows Articles that need to be wikified to be sorted by month. I would like to help. Please contact me on how I can help with that effort, as it would be very useful for my task.

Cheers. Folajimi 14:32, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the timely reply. Just so that you know, I have no delusions about the scope of the task. However, I will find the product very useful for my efforts and future plans. So, I shall start immediately. Cheers. Folajimitalk
  • P.S. How do I handle entries that were tagged a while back? The CURRENTMONTH name field seems inappropriate. For instance, I tagged an entry as {{Wikify-date|January 2006}} but no difference was observed on the "...need to be wikified..." page.
  • How many of the 6000 entries that were in the initial category were tagged during March 2006? I want to start wikifying beginning with the oldest entries. As such, it would be helpful for me to know which entries have been waiting the longest.
I am willing to go back and fix the delinquent entries, if need be. Unless, you are opposed to that... Folajimitalk
  • As it currently stands everything prior to March 2006 is a chaotic mess. Considering that my efforts would be greatly helped if I could sort earlier entries, I will look up every entry manually, if I have to.
Based on your earlier reply, I would need to create categories before I can use {{Wikify-date|January 2006}}; could you explain how that works? Folajimitalk
  • The category section appears to be out of order because the entry I created came after yours. Is there a way to properly order the links? Folajimi 04:13, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uncategorised good articles[edit]

Can I safely move it to Inactive Tasks or are you going to add more? --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 05:04, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why thank you! I appreciate that. I'll move it to Inactive projects. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 09:40, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Action item.[edit]

Is it possible to have a bot look out for {{wikify}} tags and replace them with {{wikify-date|April 2006}} tag instead? This would be an immense help as 'A' and 'B' are by and large sorted.

Cheers. Folajimi 07:23, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article that need wikification by month[edit]

Hi, Bluemoose. I saw that the categorizing of articles needing wikification by month has begun. I was wondering how long it will take to complete this. Thanks, Kjkolb 11:04, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From your reply, I take it that Bluebot, or perhaps any bot, cannot tell when an article was tagged for wikification and because of this, all the articles would be put into the current month. I guess that the bot that sorts the articles needing cleanup, Pearle I think, might do so by running every day instead of by determining when the tag was placed. I am not sure that people will actually use the new tagging system because people are resistant to change and it is more work than the old system. Although, a couple of enthusiastic people appear to be sorting them manually and by AWB. Perhaps we should wait and see whether they can do the job. After they're finished, we could run a bot every day like they do for cleanup articles. If they can't do it, we could move all the articles to a "March 2006 and before" category and then start running a bot every day. What do you think? -- Kjkolb 11:45, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
FTR, Pearle is, in fact, smart enough to look into the article history and determine the month of first tagging. -- Beland 03:37, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pearle + Articles that need to be wikified[edit]

Hi Beland, I have proposed on Category talk:Articles that need to be wikified that we split that category into by-month sub-categories, just like Category:Cleanup by month. I wonder if your bot would be willing to do the grunt work similar to what it does for Cleanup by month? Also, I might need a hand setting up the new by-month categories/templates, and I imagine you understand the details much better than myself. thanks Martin 17:25, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I copied the cleanup by date template, see Template:Wikify-date. Martin 20:06, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. Pearle is now auto-sorting the category. -- Beland 03:37, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification / Interpretation Request.[edit]

This is the first time I have encountered a tag of this sort:

{| class="messagebox cleanup" |This article or section needs to be '''[[Wikipedia:Glossary#W|wikified]]'''. Please format this article according to the guidelines laid out at [[Wikipedia:Guide to layout]]. Please remove this template after wikifying. |}[[Category:Articles that need to be wikified]]

Can you explain how this works? Folajimi 22:47, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Could you get Special:Contributions/70.23.155.181 to lay off trying to deep-six the categories?

  • Oh. The funky tag was used by the COSMAC ELF entry. Thanks for the expedited service! Folajimitalk

Wikipedia survey[edit]

Bad links + technical difficulties[edit]

Firstly, thanks a lot for sorting out the wikification category. Secondly, I am not sure how you detect the bad links, I assume just by pattern matching the article text, if this is the case then a tool I made could probably do the job of generating the bad links reports. Martin 10:05, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is the code I use:
	$tmp = $target;

	# Ignore anchor part
	if (!($tmp =~ m/\&\#/))
	{
	    $tmp =~ s/\#.*?$//;
	}

	if ($tmp =~ m%http://%i)
	{
	    $linksHTTP .= " $target";
	}
	elsif (($tmp =~ m/__/)
	    or ($tmp =~ m/^_/)
	    or ($tmp =~ m/_$/))
	{
	    $linksSpacing .= " $target";
	}
	elsif (($tmp =~ m/\&\w+;/)
	    or ($tmp =~ m/\&\#;/)
	    or ($tmp =~ m/\%[\d|a-z]/i))
	{
	    $linksEntity .= " $target";
	}
This is run on any snippet of wikicode that is in double brackets - [[ ]], anywhere in the latest database dump. If your tool could take over report generation for bad links, that would be great. -- Beland 12:26, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB question[edit]

Hello Martin, Would running the AWB (for doing general fixes) using a bot (on automatic mode every 15 secs) require bot approval (bot flag) first? Please advise. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 06:31, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB new user question[edit]

I've got .NET 2.0 installed and loaded AWB 2.1.9. I can create a list, set options, and press Start. The first article in the list loads in the top panel, but then nothing happens other than the bot timer resetting every 70 seconds. What am I doing wrong? Thanks Rillian 17:11, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I make a list, set options and press Start. The status bar reads "Loading article" and the Edit Page for the first article appears in the top panel. Nothing appears in the bottom right text box. It then waits until restart - which is now at 128 seconds. Rillian 19:17, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

interesting discovery[edit]

hi there martin. today i was going through spelling mistakes for 'their', thinking that today's speed was kinda slow parsing the list, and an idea came to me. i copied AWB, and ran both copies, checking for both 'their' and now also 'throughout'. i pretty must doubled my edit speed using alt-tab between the two. this could either be a 'feature' or a 'bug' depending on how you look at it, which i now leave to you. JoeSmack Talk 19:18, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Multi-tasking is a feature of the operating system ;-) I don't think it could be called a bug. thanks Martin 19:46, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB Problems[edit]

Hi Martin, got added to the approved user page today, and tried to use AWB, but to no avail. Whenever I try to use it I get a pop-up error message, well actually it's a pop-up problem message saying: you are not enabled to use this. What could be the problem? I've tried it with IE open, with Firefox open, with both open! I've got the right .NET downloaded and so that's not the problem. I can't generate any lists or anything at all. Any ideas? --Wisden17 21:00, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Close it and reopen - that usually helps me. --M@thwiz2020 21:30, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AWB's edits[edit]

Thought I should let you know. While I ran AWB to apply some general fixes yesterday, I saw it doing this edit. It did not need to move that comment at all. Can anything be done about it? - 22:36, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Ok, thanks, minor bug fixed now. Martin 22:45, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

large lists with AWB[edit]

hi again. i am trying to construct a big XML setting to catch a list of misspellings, and I think that the list will stop populating itself after around 850-900. It simply returns a barron list, with maybe one or two items. removing items from the regex (reducing the number of misspellings checked) eventually gives a list of around that size, and slowly adding to the regex after that results the in previously mentioned problem. any ideas as to why? i really want to make this big ol' comb that gets many misspellings at once, since it is less stressful on the database. JoeSmack Talk 01:51, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

here is an example of a XML file of what i want to do; try and run it yourself (i'd copy the wikisource and not the actual wiki article page), and see what i'm talking about.JoeSmack Talk 04:52, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'll have a look. thanks Martin 20:25, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried splitting them up with some success. However, for instance, the list produced for the misspellings for A-F is different from the A-C, in that the A-F list will catch different articles than the A-C list when looking for something like 'begining'. JoeSmack Talk 04:21, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Get a chance to look at the bug? Really i'd use (and have used) the database dump, but google via AWB is just smarter at sorting out the false positives (ex: getting 'healthier' when looking for the misspelling 'thier' with the dump).JoeSmack Talk 19:41, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I havent been able to reproduce the problem yet. When searching the database, search for " thier" with a preceding space, this eliminates the false positives, and is much more accurate than the google search. Martin 20:10, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly has AWB done[edit]

Hi, I'd be grateful if you could take a quick look at the edit I made to Speed of light yesterday with AWB. I'm not quite sure what AWB actually did. I have the popups enable in my monobook and it shows the changes made to the page in that edit, and I can't actually see what AWB has done. It says that it has changed full-stops, into simply another full-stop! Am I missing something? --Wisden17 16:54, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All it did was remove white space, you probably shouldnt save a change that only does something so minor, and you should also not save a change when your not sure what it has done. The changes AWB makes automatically are generally meant to be incidental to whatever the main purpose of the edit was, such as fixing a typo, or something. Martin 16:59, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd been using it for typos and quite wikifying articles, and when it came it onto this page I wasn't entirely sure what the changes were. I see that effectively it did nothing. Thanks for your quick answer. --Wisden17 19:16, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

This person Kurt Leyman (talk · contribs) who is the same as this IP 213.243.185.219 (talk · contribs) has editted a number of pages, changing numbers, deleting text, adding other text/numbers, without providing any references for your information. Most recently the battle of kursk where he deleted 300 thousand casulties, winter war where he has removed 2 key paragraphs about a research paper and what a president said in the 60s, the battle of berlin and many others. I see that you have posted on his IP adress once and I am wondering what is the correct way to approach this matter. (Deng 16:32, 7 April 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Asking for references, if he persists without providing them then the guidance at Wikipedia:Resolving disputes is pretty useful. good luck. Martin 16:38, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They have been asked for many times. He dosent respond and dosent give any. And there is not one specific item but so many. I am not even certain how to put into the words the altering of facts of so many facts in so many articles that he has done, could you perhaps give me more advice (Deng 18:23, 7 April 2006 (UTC))[reply]

AWB broken?[edit]

The latest version of AWB no longer seems to enforce the "using AWB" tag in the edit summary? Is this intentional? If so, I'd strongly recommend against it. We just ran across a user making a slew of questionable edits and it took us awhile to figure out what was going on because "using AWB" wasn't anywhere in the edit summaries. We thought maybe he was using pywikipedia, or something. I downloaded the latest version of AWB and confirmed this new functionality. Please deal with this as soon as possible! Thanks, Cyde Weys 18:10, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I removed it because people complained about it, he has been removed from the list, he can't use it any more. Also, if he had been using pywiki, what difference would it have made? that has no restrictions on it at all, and does not force any kind of summary, even though it is fully automatic. Martin 18:15, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The difference is that AWB users seem to consider the term "bot" to be a personal attack, even when they are editing at a bot-like speed and with a bot-like lack of responsiveness. The user was told to stop those kinds of edits, but continued doing them for 28 minutes. Any "bot" would have been blocked sooner, but people say "but I'm not a bot, I'm not editing from the command line, I'm using AWB" and somehow that makes it rouge admin abuse when they get blocked for it, I guess because it tears a hole in their aspirations of later adminship, I don't know. — Apr. 7, '06 [18:25] <freakofnurxture|talk>

Bluebot request[edit]

Can bluebot categorize all those date articles? See here for all the articles January_2003#Events_by_month. And then each month has all the articles in one page. Some are already categorised but there is no standard in them as you can see in Category:Days in 2003. Also, thanks for all the new cleanup lists. Garion96 (talk) 15:13, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll look into it, might get a bit nasty though as it is so disorganised. Martin 21:16, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Here's hoping, tnx. I could do it myself or making a project of it I guess if I feel like doing a boring and repetitive job. :) But it's quite a lot I think and a bot could do it much better. To be sure, it's not just 2003 but also all the other years in that list. Garion96 (talk) 21:43, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Queueing_Theory deleted[edit]

Hello. You recently deleted Talk:Queueing_Theory, as it was a "Orphaned talk page". The reason it was an orphaned talk page was simply that it had been accidentally moved to the wrong Talk page while it was still in progress. I was going to finish it up and move it to Buzen's algorithm in a week or two when I had a break in my exams and time to finish it. I'd really appreciate it if you could undelete it, or send me a copy of it, as it had a lot of LaTeX math that would be hard to reproduce. AWB on Wiktionary?[edit]

Would it be possible to adapt AWB for Wiktionary? There's lots of annoying currently manual things going on there; AWB would help a lot. Thanks, Rory096 21:37, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it could be very easily adapted, I dont really want to do it myself because I have no time to test it. Martin 21:41, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I did some testing last night on wiktionary after writing some ugly code to take into account the fact that Wiktionary doesn't follow Wikipedia Naming Conventions (they use lower case first letter article names much of the time) and some other quirks like non-mainspace being quite different, it doesn't look like it will be all that difficult to adapt to given some time to do a lot of testing.
I'll keep testing different things and talking to Wiktionarians (#wiktionary) online/on-site to identify as many issues as possible and look at ways to deal with them.

Hey; I was wondering if you could undelete Talk:Pork (instant messenger), which you deleted yesterday as an orphaned talk page. Reasoning is that it "contain[ed] deletion discussion that isn't logged elsewhere" (WP:CSD#G8) cited in its deletion review, which I'm looking to appeal sometime in the future.
