Pathoschild's successful RfA[edit]

Thanks a lot for your support on my request for adminship; it passed with 23/0/0 (plus one duplicate support and an oppose from a vandal IP). I'll do my best to exceed everyone's expectations. ^^ // Pathoschild 19:51, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Lifetime[edit]

We must stop butting heads like this, because your antlers really hurt. If you are intending to remove a template that is in use by the community, then you must refer it to Wikipedia:Templates for deletion first. Since you have not done that, I will continue adding this useful template where I find the need, i.e. all biographical articles. I invite you to take it further – i.e. to consult the community – rather than taking unilateral action as you are doing. This template has survived one vote for deletion, so it probably will again. User:Noisy | Talk 21:02, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please read the Template talk:Lived page for the template Template:Lived first before taking your unilateral actions. I was mistaken, it seems, and it is that template that has survived a VFD (and reading the VFD discussion might be useful, as well), and there are clear reasons given for retaining this useful template in source as it may become useful for other functions in the fullness of time. Your argument for substing is flawed, otherwise you would be doing it for pretty well every other template in existence. Please think about the future, and the potential uses that such a template may be used for, rather than taking such a short-sighted view. User:Noisy | Talk 00:04, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, your agressive and bad faith behaviour has really given me little reason to believe your protestations. You plainly can't even be bothered to try and see my side of the argument: you just trot out platitudes. User:Noisy | Talk 00:19, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Question about C#[edit]

I have a simple question regarding C#, which I hope you can answer. I'm currently playing around with C#, but I can't quite figure out how you can make changes in the editbox in Wikipedia or add text to any textbox on the internet for that matter. Thanks in advance. AutoWikiBrowser[edit]

I would like to try your AutoWikiBrowser. Can you register me please? Bobblewik 18:02, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It is amazing! I have been testing it by finding unnecessary links to Wednesday and delinking them. It took me a while to work out the interface. Here are some first comments:
  • I don't quite know what 'Local txt file' means.
  • I have no idea what the text area on the right does.
  • I don't like exclamation marks on user interfaces, but it is your thing not mine.
  • I wonder if the buttons might be better marked 'Cancel edit' instead of 'Ignore' and 'Save edit' instead of 'Save!'.
Brilliant thingie. What a guy you are. Thanks. Bobblewik 20:56, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Another thought. Perhaps it would be better to put the 'Make from' field below the page name. Now that I am getting used to it, I think that seems more natural because it matches how it works in Wikipedia itself.... you go to the page first and then get the list. Bluebot request for template if[edit]

Hi Martin

I'm currently trying to convert all uses of template:if to template:qif. I found out that if I edit an article that uses template if, the list of used templates is mostly plain wrong. But it can be updated by doing a null edit (aka a touch). What links here fooled me because I thought it's sorted but it is not. So I have now learned the hard way that there are about 20'000 articles that say they use template if. I would say about 80..90 percent of them in fact do not use template if. So doing "what links here" on template if brings up a huge wrong list.

I have tried to touch all articles that say they link to template if by using your fine AutoWikiBrowser, but since I have no bot license the auto mode is disabled. That would take me days, I think this is nearly impossible to do.

Now getting to the point: may I ask you to do one of your wonderful bluebot runs that touches all articles that say they use template:if (touching the "What links here" list of template:if)?

I would expect a massive shrinking of the "what links here" list of template if to a manually treatable size from this.

That would be a tremendous help and would enable me to find the real remaining uses of template if that really use template if. I see a chance that we can consolidate if to qif.

The whole qif/if thing (and thus stuff like template:web reference or template:book reference is at the moment at stake, because we are accused by some Wikipedians for server strain at WP:AUM. But you probably know all that already.

However, thanks a lot and sorry for nagging you! – Adrian | Talk 20:11, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your reply on my talk. That's great! – Adrian | Talk 21:20, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Martin. That bot run is no longer needed. They have done it the hard way. So I do not have to convert any longer. Thanks anyway! – Adrian | Talk 20:10, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Actually it is still needed, because it is necessary to find out whether there are still any templates/articles which have been broken by that edit and there are about 15,000 articles on Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:If. I'm slowly cycling through with AWB, cleaning up as I go, but it'll take ages that way… HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 10:38, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Put on TfD. Thanks to Martin for the bot work and to Phil for finishing what I had begun. – Adrian | Talk 09:50, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Movie infobox request...[edit]

Hey there Bluemoose. I posted this on the Bot Request page but had no bites. Could you look at it? The changes made would not affect the "look" of any movie pages, but would clean them up greatly:

Bot request for fixing movie infobox[edit]

Currently template:Infobox Film has parameters like this:

Infobox Film | name =

 | image =
 | caption =
 | director =
 | producer =
 | writer =
 | starring =
 | music =
 | cinematography =
 | editing =
 | distributor =
 | release_date =
 | runtime =
 | language =
 | budget =
 | imdb_id =

However, many old movie pages used differnet titles for the same thing. For example, some use "movie_language" instead of the (now) correct "language". Could someone write a bot to change the incorrect titled fields in all the movie pages to the correct titles for these fields. Here's a list of what we would need (and this would be for all pages that use the Infobox Film template only):

  * movie_language should be changed to language
  * image caption should be changed to caption
  * movie_name should be changed to movie
  * original_score should be changed to music
  * "awards" field and what ever follows "=" in the template should be removed, same for
  * "proceeded by" and "followed by" (these were in some old movie templates but are no longer used)

This bot was first mentioned by Bobet 17:22, 10 December 2005 (UTC). This would be very helpful, then we could finally get all the movie page templates to be the same. Steve-O 05:21, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks![edit]

Just in case you didn't see...[edit]

It would actually be a good idea if Bluebot could do a touch-run on Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:if. Whilst a good many client articles and templates have been converted to use {{qif}} instead, there is a residue which must be fixed: I came across one just today. So long as there are about 15,000 articles all claiming to use {{if}}, it will prove very difficult to discern those which actually do not. HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 18:01, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed those templates you tagged on my talk page, and touched the clients of most: the Bool* ones have several thousand between them so that's not going to happen right now :-) I wonder if Bluebot simply goes ahead and performs a touch-run on {{if}} what the result will be … HTH HAND Phil | Talk 14:12, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

suggestions for AWB improvments[edit]

Currently, there seems to ba a limit of 5000 articles in the list when one uses the What links here feature... Could that be increased in a future version (or is there any way to work around it? I've been correcting some listings in the album infobox, and am done with the first 5000, but don't know how to get a list of the next batch into the program...)

Also, I think it would be a nice feature to save settings, so one wouldn't have to enter the search strings etc. manually each time one starts the program. --Fritz S. (Talk) 14:40, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a hard limit on what Wikipedia provides: if you try this then (assuming that Bluebot hasn't fixed them all ;-)) you will find that whereas you specified 10000, you only get 5000 at a time. So AWB will need some way of saying "done the first 5k, want the next lot", which involves a subtly different URL (like this). HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 17:17, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I solved that problem for getting all articles in a category, I have only just implemented it into "what links here", you'll see it in 0.99 Martin 17:19, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Profanity-named bands[edit]

While correcting links for Jagjaguwar, I discovered your remarks on a particular profanity and the bands that used the term as a name. There is at least one article about such a band.

Could you please provide clarification about the remarks you made? What I took away from your remarks is that such bands should be denied recognition by Wikipedia. Do you consider that analysis/assessment accurate?

Please understand that I do not have a dog in this fight. Rather, I would like to work towards technical accuracy. (Folajimi 12:42, 25 December 2005 (UTC))[reply]

It's not that I think the bands should not be recognised by Wikipedia, but that it is totally unnecessary and unencyclopedic to mention them in the Fuck article, imagine if this idea was applied to all articles, wikipedia would just be a massive list of references. Martin 19:02, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
How about having a reference about the band? For an example, see the top of the Landing page.

Request - please help with moving an image[edit]

Would you please move an image that I just uploaded. It is [[Image:BGenHardy_USMC.jpg]]. I would like to have it moved to [[Image:MajGenHardy_USMC.jpg]]. I mistakenly indicated that Hardy was a brigadier general (a mistake on a subtitle on his official biography). All other references indicate correctly that he was a Major General (MajGen) - which is evident from the 2 stars on his uniform in the image.

I did not see a "move" tab on the image. Is there a "proper" procedure for renaming images?

Thanks in advance. — ERcheck @ 19:44, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
