Image

I have just obtained a couple of images from the Nixon library which I will upload tonight. They were both taken at opening day at RFK. I'd appreciate it if you could look at them and see who, if anyone you can identify. I think he is talking to NY Manager Houk and Was manager Williams (this was 1969) and I think Kuhn is somewhere in the pictures but I don't know the guy by site. Your help would be gratefully appreciated. Also, Landis was promoted to FA.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:00, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent! Kudos on Landis. And for the RFK photos, post the links here when you upload them, and I'll take a look. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:06, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Great! Thanks. here is the first. Second will follow. I actually got three, but the third is Nixon at Redskins Park with George Allen and a cast of several I need help from the Redskins people identifying. I gather the guys in uniform by Nixon are Williams and Houk?--Wehwalt (talk) 02:27, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And the second one is here--Wehwalt (talk) 02:40, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be interested in seeing the football one also, just to see if I recognize anyone. The ones that I can tell from these two photos (both obviously taken on the same day), are as follows, left to right:
1 - "Brennan" - maybe Jack Brennan, Ted Williams, Bowie Kuhn, Richard Nixon, Bob Short, Ralph Houk, Joe Cronin
2 - Nixon, Brennan(?), Short, Kuhn
Here's another photo from that same set.[1] You see Williams' shirt better. He wore number 9. Also this black-and-white,[2] where it's obviously Williams.
Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 03:18, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That is Jack Brennan, the archivist I deal with at the Nixon Library on images was commenting on that. Well, that is good, we have no image of Houk in his article, and I'll crop it when I get a chance. I'll upload the Redskins one in a sec, ah here it is.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:57, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Yeh, I'm sure I could figure out who some of them are, but the only ones I know for sure are Nixon and Allen. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 04:05, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In the first picture, I'm wondering who the guys behind Houk and Cronin are. They look real familiar, probably Nixon cronies, but I can't place them. Brennan himself could probably identify most of the pols in the picture. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 04:06, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And I hasten to add, these are really excellent photos. Probably taken with high-quality equipment and likewise scanned with high-quality equipment. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 04:08, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree. I will send an email to the archivist if I don't see her today, which is my second and final day at the Nixon Library for this research trip, I may go back in September when I will be in LA again, if I have more work to do there. I believe they were scanned from negatives. They have only a few from each roll of film taken in digital format; they have many more images on contact sheets, but turning them into digital images is not cheap.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:15, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I thought maybe they had scanned the negatives. It's amazing what they can do with negatives that are in good shape. Those two Nixon photos look like they were taken just yesterday. Or like you got in a time machine with your digital camera and went back to 1969. I wonder if anyone has tried scanning the original negatives of some old-old-time photos. I bet they would be a revelation. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 11:21, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
They are wonderful quality. No one ever complained about poor image quality from the WHPO under Nixon. Part of his drive to have every aspect of his presidency recorded, which of course was a mistake on the audio ... if you find the time machine let me know, I've got stock in Apple to buy.--Wehwalt (talk) 11:29, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In a twisted sense, it wasn't a mistake for him to record all his meetings, at least not in the bigger historical picture. If folks stop focusing on the Watergate ancient history, maybe they would find that there could be a lot of interesting and useful stuff on those tapes. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 10:30, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, yeh, I remember that now - an admin scandal from a year or two ago. When I see admins do stuff that I would never, ever do as an admin, I wonder how they managed to get the job. Better PR, I guess. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 10:41, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the things that admins, if I may speak ill of my brethren, lose the tools over are just so not worth it. I'm tempted sometimes. Maybe it is age and maturity (so to speak) that prevents me. And as for Rlevse, he probably realized no one checked if you attributed a statement to Jones, page 46, and it got easier and easier after the first time. Landis

I did not feel the reader has to hear about every single case that Landis ruled on, and the Cobb/Speaker case, while God knows the people are prominent enough, it's unclear exactly what the allegations were, why they were made, why Landis ruled as he did (whether because he wanted to put an end to the endless pre-Black Sox stuff, or whatever. Hey Bugs, sorry it didn't work. I've tested on a variety of configurations and haven't been able to reproduce the problem you describe. If you could let me know your browser and skin, that might help me track it down. Cheers. Kaldari (talk) 00:07, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It works fine up until I post the name of a picture file. When I click on "review" it produces this vague error that "something went wrong" when trying to retrieve the file. I'm on IE 8 and using what I assume is the "classic" layout. Nothing special other than that. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 03:24, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That error means that the API which checks to see if the image exists on Commons returned an error, which is extremely unusual. Do you get this error even if you leave the image field blank (and it inserts the default)? What do you get when you visit this URL? Do you get something with <imageinfo> in it, or something with <warnings> in it? That API call is identical to what gets executed if you leave the image field blank in Make your own. Kaldari (talk) 19:17, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's very strange that you get an error from the API URL. Anyone should be able to access that URL with or without being logged in. I'm wondering if there's a separate IP blacklist for the API that somehow you're getting caught by. I'm going to ask some more knowledgeable tech folks and see if I can get to the bottom of this. Shibe Park plexiglass

Bugs, I think it was you who added the item about the new plexiglass backstop in 1960 and the Crosley Field mention. Do you remember where you got that? Was it Westcott? I can't seem to find it anywhere and I need to give it a cite. Thanks! — HarringtonSmith (talk) 11:41, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sure there are many sources beyond the visual. Googling [shibe park plexiglas] I see a number of references. Googling [crosley field plexiglass], here's a mention of it in a newspaper's article about Riverfront Stadium:[4] "Bob Howsam... the Reds' general manager... eliminated the order for a plexiglass screen behind home plate like Crosley Field's. It blocks out the sound, which is a big part of fan enjoyment, Howsam said." Andrew Clem's illustration for Crosley suggests 1958[5] Most of the sources indicate 1956 for Shibe, which did undergo some remodeling that year.[6]Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 12:28, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bugs, I expanded the Spite Fence section at Shibe. Because there is so much Shibe-specific stuff, I didn't retain either the Wrigley or the Baker Bowl stuff. I did leave the old version in there though, hidden, so it'll be easy to extract those items if you think they need to go back in. Hope you like. — HarringtonSmith (talk) 19:30, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Abortion mediation

A proposal has been made to rename the two abortion articles to completely new names, namely 'Opposition to legalized abortion' and 'Support for legalized abortion'. The idea, which is located at the Mediation Cabal, is currently open for opinions. Your thoughts on the matter would be appreciated. -- Eraserhead1 <talk> 19:21, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Completely new abortion proposal and mediation

In light of the seemingly endless disputes over their respective titles, a neutral mediator has crafted a proposal to rename the two major abortion articles (pro-life/anti-abortion movement, and pro-choice/abortion rights movement) to completely new names. The idea, which is located here, is currently open for opinions. As you have been a contributor in the past to at least one of the articles, your thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

The hope is that, if a consensus can be reached on the article titles, the energy that has been spent debating the titles of the articles here and here can be better spent giving both articles some much needed improvement to their content. Please take some time to read the proposal and weigh in on the matter. Even if your opinion is simple indifference, that opinion would be valuable to have posted.

To avoid concerns that this notice might violate WP:CANVASS, this posting is being made to every non-anon editor who has edited either page (or either page's respective talk page) since 1 July 2010, irrespective of possible previous participation at the mediation page. As far as I know, no. He's distributing a short book at his exhibits (technically an "exhibit catalog" but expanded into book form). No idea if it will ever be more widely published. It basically chronicles the entire story of his interactions with Wikipedia in agonizing detail. It also reproduces in full all of the articles that he added photos to. The exhibit is as much about Wikipedia as his photos it seems. Kaldari (talk) 01:29, 14 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I can't imagine who would buy such a book. So he exploited wikipedia's "any moron can edit" philosophy in order to get his stupid image in wikipedia a lot. That says a lot more about him than it does about wikipedia. But he's likely too narcissistic to recognize that irony, and has probably never heard the expression, "Fools' names and fools' faces are often seen in public places." For about 6 years (including the 1992 and 1993 seasons in the World Series), I had season's tickets to the Jays. Joe Carter: caught the final out in 1992 and hit that amazing home run in 1993. (I was at the stadium for that 1993 game, but I didn't see the Carter hit or any of his stroll around the bags except for the touch at second. Everyone in the stands was standing up and screaming and I was too short even in Row 30 behind the plate. I finally saw it when we got to the bar for the endless replays after the game.) Is that worse? Bielle (talk) 18:34, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Somewhere around I have a "Croix de Candlestick" button, a prize awarded to anyone who sat through an extra-innings game through that park's noted chilliness. I forget exactly when, but my friend's accountant's front-row seats let me watch Frank Robinson glower from ten yards or so away. Man, he could glower.
I forget how much of that game I spent in the warm dry stadium club, admission to went with the tickets. PhGustaf (talk) 18:59, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Frank Robinson managed the Giants during 1981-84, so presumably it was during that stretch. That's a prized possession, even if you did "cheat" by hanging out in the stadium club. : Robby was an intimidating presence, and it's just unfortunate that he generally got stuck managing such lousy teams. I recall a game against the White Sox while he was playing manager for Cleveland, probably in 1976. He was on the bench that day. He got into an argument with the home plate ump, and then put himself in as a pinch-hitter for the express purpose of arguing some more, up close. (He also got a base hit.) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 19:26, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
PhGustaf, you are remembering the old, outdoor park, Exhibition Stadium, right on Lake Ontario. I've sat through snowfalls in opening week more than once. (P.S. And, that would have been "from 10 metres away" :-). Bielle (talk) 19:31, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, I'm remembering Candlestick Park, a stadium in the pleasant San Francisco Bay Area which has a famously hostile climate. Windy, foggy, rainy, chilly. Canadian tundra would be a break. PhGustaf (talk) 19:54, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's fair to say that neither of those venues was ideal for baseball. Toronto had to put up with it for 22 1/2 seasons. San Francisco had it for 50. Things could be worse. The Phillies were in Baker Bowl for 51 1/2 years, with denizens whose perennial second-division finishes were livened up by the occasional fire or deadly collapse of seating areas. (Livened up for the survivors, that is.) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 20:06, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Death of Caylee Anthony article -- thank you

Hey, Baseball Bugs. I just want to say thank you for taking an interest in this article, which has also been expressed by another editor at my talk page. Your opinions on this matter and presence there at the article has really helped, especially in regards to the few attacking me for being "too emotional" and as though I'm the problem at the article. I mean, seriously people can't feel passionately about an article they have significantly worked on? Aren't editors here encouraged to work on topics that interest them? Furthermore, I work on topics here that don't interest me much. But when I see a Wikipedia article that needs help, sometimes I jump to its aid.

Anyway, Blackie Lstreet has had his support, even in the face of very inappropriate edits, and it's nice to have a new editor of the article backing my valid additions to them and recognizing Blackie Lstreet's continued inappropriate editing. The discussion with Avanu at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard#Casey Anthony trial combined with people at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents ‎not taking action (and the accusation that I am basically some emotional idiot) almost made me quit Wikipedia yesterday. I suppose that would also be considered the action of a very emotional person, but I was very close to leaving for good. I'm sure that I still might. I need to rid myself of Wikipedia and get the other portion of my life back. Flyer22 (talk) 22:41, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BB. Your namesake (the toon not the sport) was featured in the cryptogram that was in my paper today. That reminded me that I have had several crosswords with the clue "He bugs Bugs" or "Bugs bugs him". To this point they have always used the five letter word that begins with an "e". I hope that they acknowledge your work here one day by having the answer be a ten letter word that begins with "s" and ends with "t" and has three "p's" in it as well. • Nah, really not my cup of tea... FWIW, I'm told that it takes a fair amount of money to buy a domain name, host (this includes how much data they are allowed to store online) and setup a website. Without sponsors, they will die off eventually much like most WP clones out there, either that or they lose their core cadre of contributors/editors in the end. If there's one thing great about Wikipedia, its the diverse background of contributors/editors that it draws from, much like what the United States of America has its talent pool. And thats why or how, as far as I can see, Jimbo is able to continue getting sponsors to come aboard the WP bandwagon.

Question

Hi. I know you have worked a lot with baseball articles, so I have a question that you may have a view on.

I have an editor that is insisting that I have failed to properly source text that says that a certain baseball player was an All-Conference wide receiver for his high school team.

The statement is sourced to MLB.com -- if you click bio at his listing (as well his college bios at two different colleges, and one college media guide)[9][10][11] Thoughts? I'm sure I've read that mlb.com is our highest-level RS for baseball player bios, though I don't know off the top of my head where that is written. Tx.--Epeefleche (talk) 21:01, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The concern I have was with the "All-Conference wide receiver" assertion in the Jason Kipnis article, which was initially sourced only to media guides/bios of the colleges for which Kipnis played. The new mlb.com bio on Kipnis has picked up the same statement. Vague and unsupported references to "all-conference" and "All-American" honors are rampant in American sports and one of my pet peeves. In this case, I dug for the original source on the supposed "all-conference" honors and added the more precise information to the article. Kipnis was selected by the sports staff at the Pioneer Press (suburban Chicago newspapers) for its all-star football team for the Central Suburban League's North Division (a group consisting of six suburban Chicago high schools). Rather than repeat the vague "All-Conference wide receiver" statement, I modified the article to reflect the more precise information. I think my change was appropriate, but Epeefleche has reverted. Cbl62 (talk) 21:57, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(ec)
  • Answering your question, the discussion is at the DYK page, for Jason Kipnis -- the second baseman the Indians just brought up. Discussion is taking place here.
That is the main issue. But the editor also views all university media guides on athletes as non-RSs. Even for something such as "player x was an All-Conference wide receiver in high school".
And denigrates such a statement, sourced to MLB.com and to two college's bios, by implying that what is required to support such a statement is a "primary record of an All-Conference selection".
It might be helpful if some sports-focused editors were to give that section a look. If we couldn't use MLB.com and college media guides, that would be a revolutionary change. Tx.--Epeefleche (talk) 22:04, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify, I only reverted Cb's deletion of text; text that was sourced to MLB.com, 2 bios at 2 different colleges, and 1 college media guide. I didn't delete his addition.--Epeefleche (talk) 22:09, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have never said college media guides can't be used. To the contrary, they are very reliable sources for much of the historical and statistical information. What I have said is that I have found player bios published by colleges to sometimes be unreliable in recounting high school accomplishments. Also, in AfD discussion, I have been reminded that college media guides, while they may be reliable for some information, are not "independent" of the athletes who they write about. Cbl62 (talk) 22:14, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Cb -- you wrote that it was a problem that "the sourcing for the "all-conference" football status is Kipnis' bio from the Arizona State web site, which is not independent (Kipnis was a student-athlete at ASU)". You then deleted the text, supported by his bio at the Arizona State website, the University of Kentucky website, the Arizona State media guide, and MLB.com. By your statement, and your deletions, it looks as though you do not believe that college media guides are RSs for such statements about college athletes.
Furthermore, I see that you just accused me at the DYK page of "canasing for support on other talk pages", based on my lone initial comment to Baseball Bugs above. My initial comment at this talkpage is not canvassing (and of course this is only one talk page). Baseball Bugs is a seasoned baseball editor. Contacting one informed but uninvolved baseball editor, "Baseball Bugs", who is known for expertise in the field, and asking his view on a baseball subject is not canvassing. That was an unpleasant false accusation that you made publicly at the DYK page -- I would appreciate your crossing it out.--Epeefleche (talk) 22:30, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I recommend that you pose this matter to the baseball project page and see what the real experts think. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 23:24, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A chance to strike back at the deletionists!

Hey, Bugs. I dunno if you saw it at Shibe Park, but Ww2censor, a long-standing image deletionist, has listed the USPS Shibe Park Stamp image near the end of the article for deletion. If you think that the image contributes to the readers' enjoyment of the article, you can enter a Keep post here. Enough Keep posts will help ensure that the image stays in the article. If you have any friends who like the article, like the way the image enhances it, or just want to strike a blow at deletionist bullying, please encourage them to make Keep posts, too. This fellow's contribution list reveals that he patrols the stamp images, looking for ones to delete. Working together, maybe we can keep his mitts off this one. Thanks, Bugs — HarringtonSmith (talk) 06:51, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can you find the photo on which the stamp was based? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 08:46, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, I looked, but no soap. I think the artist painted it from photos, but changed it to show the corner without a game day crowd. S/he also added a trolley car on Lehigh Ave, which is what really makes it charming. I'd sure hate to lose it... after seeing the place crumble throughout the length of the article, I like having the stamp there, with the park all fresh and new, as if it were in ballpark heaven. — HarringtonSmith (talk) 12:06, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Priceless. :) It's interesting to see the less-structured approach to game shows in those days. "The gal to his left" on this What's My Line? episode was Dorothy Kilgalen, who was a gossip columnist and died under somewhat mysterous circumstances. At the far end of the panel was Bennett Cerf, who founded Random House publishing and was a great punster and hence another of my heroes. To Groucho's right was Arlene Francis, who I think was a stage actress but overall was probably best know for this program. She was married to Martin Gable, who occasionally appeared in the "guest spot" on the panel which Groucho was occupying on this occasion. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 02:31, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is great to see Cerf's name again. It was worth watching ...Line? just to see what he would come up with to tickle our funny bones. FYI he has a small role in A Face in the Crowd (film) a film that may be more timely now than when it came out. I suspect that you've already seen it but I thought that I would post this for other talk page watchers. MarnetteD | Talk 15:32, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was much too young to remember Cerf in person, but when I was a kid (and a nerdy kid, somethings never change), my grandmother gave me a bunch of his books to read. I remember them fondly. I never learned until later who he was, but I always did enjoy those books. --Jayron32 16:59, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The "Panel Show" like What's My Line is a now-extinct genre, but in the '50s it was a descendant of the Algonquin Round Table with persons-about-town being witty for the rest of us. The game part of the show was secondary, the point was to showcase the wit of people like Cerf. They used to show old kinescopes of it on Game Show network at 3 am up till a few years ago. Incidentally, Arlene Francis's husband Martin Gabel was much more than just "Mr. Francis" — he was a Broadway and Hollywood actor, director and impressario, quite the man-about-town himself. Today, he's virtually forgotten. — HarringtonSmith (talk) 17:20, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There have been a few recent attempts to revive it, The Marriage Ref is a recent incarnation of the format. The artform really reached its zenith with What's My Line and the much later Match Game, but it has largely been replaced by shows like I Love the XXs) and the like, where you get C-list celebrities to give witty comments on various topics. Those have basically replaced the panel show, as they serve roughly the same purpose (though, I must admit, are much less entertaining). --Jayron32 17:25, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, to a point. WML was more of a window into the New York smart set, while Match Game was kind of smarmy and vulgar, laden with double-entendres. Of course, they were from vastly different eras. On one of the I've Got a Secret shows from the '50s, the contestant was a hundred year-old man whose secret was that he witnessed the assassination of Lincoln! as a boy in the crowd at Ford's Theatre! Wow. — HarringtonSmith (talk) 17:43, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
One of John Charles Daly's great moments was his introduction and narration of the first episode of Green Acres, as kind of a parody of a documentary. Match Game and Hollywood Squares were both filled with suggestive stuff, springing from the late 60s when TV standards were loosening up a bit. They were funny, though. Another good early panel show was To Tell the Truth, hosted by Bud "Superman" Collyer. Their panelists included Kitty Carlisle Hart, who was a star in A Night at the Opera and thrived for most of her 90-plus years, having just died a few years ago. Back to What's My Line?, one of the items on youtube had Col. Harland Sanders, who was then unknown outside of his home region, and it was interesting watching the panelists try to figure out what his product was, when any American watching it today would know. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 19:09, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think the biggest diff between WML and the Match Game was in the panel itself: Cerf, Kilgalen, Gabel, all were accomplished celebrities with achievements outside the show. Nipsey Russell, Brett Somers and Patti Deutsch's only notoriety was the Match Game. — HarringtonSmith (talk) 19:19, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly. And John Daly's primary job at the time was as a CBS news reporter. WML was kind of a fun weekly get-together. The informal way they conducted the show, as for example with Groucho jumping in with quips while Dorothy was trying to ask questions, was what he was expected to do - liven the place up. The original fourth panelist on WML was also an accomplished celeb, the radio star Fred Allen. He died unexpectedly, and they had a series of guest panelists henceforth. I used to see Nipsey Russell as a panelist on TTTT occasionally also. But you're right that MG was likely the primary source of income for a number of those other folks. Hollywood Squares, in contrast, featured well-known performers who generally had other jobs. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 19:28, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Caricatures of dumb guys? Surely you could just pick portraits at random from the current session of Congress and it would suffice. Soxwon (talk) 18:46, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I could fill up ten megs of talk pages with real life morons but their portraits wouldn't have that funny cartoon effect. Also wouldn't there be legal issues using real people? I've seen good ones on Conan, for example his quarters segment where an outline of the map of one of the states (starts with an "A") has a dumb guy face - funny yet nothing fancy. I would post a picture of Alfred E. Neumann, except he's copyrighted. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:07, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I can't believe I used to find Mad hilarious - I'm one to talk about dumb guys. Can you guess which userbox on my userpage I'm doing? Alfred E. Neumann wouldn't have the effect I'm looking for. I'm using a stand in image till I find Mr Right. SlightSmile 22:24, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A lot of things are funny when we're in the 12-15 age bracket. National Lampoon once ran a parody of Mad (a parody of a parody), with Neumann saying, "What? Me funny?" I made one about how stupid lawn spraying is and I want a simple cartoon dumb guy face to make a point. I tried finding in the Commons but I can't figure out what category that might be in. What has been going on since I was gone for a while? I know it was that long ago, but it seems like ages... Anyway, I have been wondering what to do. I find no reason to be here (except the occasional fixing) but I have been doing well (playing poker, playing Vega Strike, ect.). But I still don't understand the east earthquake. Removing unsourced material is not to be done blindly. If you do not know anything at all about a specific aspect of a subject, it is not very wise to eliminate a long existing sentence immediately after someone tags it as needing a reference. Robots automatically date these tags, and that was done before your action. It allows checking how long ago something has become questioned. It was even contemptuous because the tagger left a hidden inline comment that indicated only a part of the phrase having been questioned - something any editor should spot. The tagger, ▲ SomeHuman 2011-08-29 01:12 (UTC)

I assumed the alleged "fact" was made-up, until or if someone provides a valid citation. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:43, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If I hadn't incidentally spotted (and reverted) it, no-one could ever see that a reference had been asked for. Ignorence is most forgivable, but by no account an excuse to assume someone's statement to be fictive. If a statement exist for a long time, unless you do very thorough research to disprove it, leave it tagged for the editors that have been working at the article. If it's a recent addition, check the internet for any trace (if something can be found, but not a good source, leave it tagged as it is) and check the links (e.g. the article on Yves Leterme had the same story).
▲ SomeHuman 2011-08-29 10:10 (UTC)
If you have a source, then post it in the article. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 10:32, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Completely beside the point. And precisely that had already been done well before your first comment here, but that did not matter at all. Your action was an abuse of my tagging: my request for a citation took more time than your blind unargumented deleting, I could do that myself. Because I did not, and someone else had introduced the statement more than a year ago, and meanwile there had been hundreds of edits by a large number of editors who worked at the article without finding it necessary to even question the statement, your unilateral action was highly contemptious, against consensus. The more because you also disrespected the work of people who introduced and improved the procedure (with a better template, and its dating bot) for requesting a reference, expecting that request to be handled in a proper way.

Imperial units

I noticed you made a comment on Medeis's talk page about the U.S. and the U.K. using imperial units. In the same way the Canada uses Imperial units in conversations with those over 50 who grew up with them, the U.K. uses them. However, they are not official in either the U.K. or Canada. I think there is one country other than the U.S. who still uses them, but I can't recall which one. The whole rest of the world uses metric. Unless an article is about the U.S. or its citizens, I would be hard-pressed to defend you change from metric to Imperial. I am missing something here? Bielle (talk) 04:18, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I may have hung around Wikipedia talk:MOSNUM for far too long, but my fuzzy memory is that (being the English-language Wikipedia) conversions between metric and Imperial/U.S. Customary are almost always provided, at least at the beginning of an article or section. The only question is which is provided first. An extreme example in the opposite direction is my careful provision of metric equivalents for yards and feet at Yankee Stadium and Yankee Stadium (1923), even though metres are almost never used in discussing U.S. baseball games or horse races. The object is to allow as broad a selection of readers as possible to read as many articles easily as possible without having to consult reference works or do too much mental arithmetic. —— Shakescene (talk) 04:39, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. The guy was totally removing feet and inches using the term "medieval" in his edit summaries. So I put them back. If someone wants to have it as meters (feet) instead of feet (meters), that would be fine. But meters without feet is a slap at the USA. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:42, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
WP:UNIT addresses the issue. While imperial units aren't mandated to be used wth SI units, thay are certainly permitted in most articles. Btw, when you said "medieval", I half-expecpted that someone had used cubits! - BilCat (talk) 13:02, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think "a slap at the USA" is a bit strong. There are millions of educated people in this world who won't even know that, except for their scientists, and those who publish internationally, the USA uses the Imperial system. However, it makes good sense for all measurements to be easily accessible to all readers. I commend your efforts, Shakescene, with respect to Yankee Stadium. Can you please answer my questions about War (2007 Film)?

1. Rogue's about to murder Crawford, but Tom manages to shoot Rogue in the face. Rogue's presumed dead.

2. Rogue's still alive. Rogue locates Tom's house. Crawford believes that Rogue killed Tom, Tom's wife, and Tom's daughter.

3. When Rogue uses a sword to fight Shiro Yanagawa, Rogue says, "My real name's Tom. I killed Rogue. I used plastic surgery to change my face." Shiro hired Rogue to kill Tom & Tom's family.

4. Since Shiro sent Rogue to Tom's house, it's because Crawford gave Tom's address to Shiro.

5. When Tom fights Crawford, Crawford realizes that Tom's still alive & Crawford realizes that Tom killed Rogue.

6. Crawford says, "I thought that you killed Rogue at the beginning of the movie. Shiro told me that his henchmen were going to beat you up for shooting Rogue. I didn't know that Shiro wanted you dead. I didn't know that Shiro wanted your family dead. I'm sorry Tom. Please forgive me." Tom still killed Crawford.

6. At the beginning of the movie, Tom shot Rogue in the face & Rogue fell into the water. Rogue was presumed dead. Tom & Crawford thought that Rogue died. Before Rogue went to Tom's house, Crawford gave Tom's address to Shiro. When Crawford gave Tom's address to Shiro, did Shiro tell Crawford that Rogue's still alive? When Crawford gave Tom's address to Shiro, did Shiro tell Crawford that his henchmen were going to beat up Tom? When Crawford gave Tom's address to Shiro, did Shiro tell Crawford that Tom's family was going to die? When Crawford gave Tom's address to Shiro, did Shiro tell Crawford that Tom was going to die? Since Crawford gave Tom's address to Shiro, is it because Crawford was forced to do it or did Crawford choose to give Tom's address to Shiro?

7. Is Crawford really sorry for the death of Tom's family? Is Crawford really sorry for giving Tom's address to Shiro?(99.88.78.94 (talk) 14:59, 15 September 2011 (UTC)).[reply]

Face/Off 1997 FILM

On wikipedia, the plot summary doesn't answer any of my questions. Are you able to answer my questions one by one? Are you able to write an answer for each of my questions?

1. Castor Troy has a girlfriend, Sasha.

2. In the movie, does Castor find out that Sasha gave birth to a kid? Yes or No.

3. When Archer breaks out of the prison, Archer goes to Dietrich's apartment. When Archer goes to Dietrich's apartment, Sasha is on top of Archer's body. Sasha, Dietrich, & Dietrich's henchmen don't know that Archer has Castor's face. If Sasha hates Castor Troy, then why is Sasha on top of Archer's body & why does Sasha kiss Castor/Archer?

4. When Pollux Troy informs Castor that Archer's sitting inside Dietrich's apartment, Castor sends the FBI Team to Dietrich's apartment.

5. Since Pollux & Castor are brothers, it means that Pollux & Castor love each other.

6. Castor & Pollux are evil. I know that Castor & Pollux are not gay. I know that Castor & Pollux are not bi-sexual.

7. Since Castor's sending the FBI Team to Dietrich's apartment, I know that it's because Castor wants to kill Archer.

8. Since Castor's sending the FBI Team to Dietrich's apartment, is it because Castor hates Dietrich? Yes or No.

9. Since Castor's sending the FBI Team to Dietrich's apartment, is it because Castor wants Dietrich to die? Yes or No.

10. Since Castor's sending the FBI Team to Dietrich's apartment, is it because Castor hates Dietrich's henchmen? Yes or NO.

11. Since Castor's sending the FBI Team to Dietrich's apartment, is it because Castor wants Dietrich's henchmen to die? Yes or NO.

12. Since Castor's sending the FBI Team to Dietrich's apartment, is it because Castor hates Sasha? YES OR NO.

13. Since Castor's sending the FBI Team to Dietrich's apartment, is it because Castor wants Sasha to die? YES OR NO.

14. In this movie, does Castor love Sasha? YES OR NO.

15. In this movie, does Castor stop loving Sasha? YES OR NO.

16. Does Sasha love Castor? YES OR NO.

17. Does Sasha stop loving Castor? YES OR NO.

18. When Castor sends the FBI TEAM to Dietrich's Apartment, Castor was pointing the gun at Sasha. Since Castor was pointing his gun at Sasha, was Castor planning to shoot Sasha? YES OR NO.

19. Since Castor was pointing his gun at Sasha, was Castor trying to lure Archer or Dietrich into a trap? YES OR NO.

20. Since Castor's bullet entered Dietrich's body, it cause Dietrich to die. Since Dietrich died, is Castor happy about Dietrich's death? YES OR NO.

21. Does Sasha realize that Archer has Castor's face? YES OR NO.

22. After Lazarro's funeral, if Sasha realizes that Archer has Castor's face, then how did Sasha realize the truth?

23. When the African American man threatened to shoot Sasha, is that when Sasha realized that Archer has Castor's face? YES OR NO.(99.88.78.94 (talk) 20:41, 16 September 2011 (UTC)).[reply]

I think minor league teams are considered notable, though not necessarily their rosters, except for those who made it to the majors or had extraordinary minor league careers. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 11:59, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, forgot to close the <nowiki> </nowiki>tags. Article only mentions two of their roster who did in fact go on to play Major League ball. And if you say the article's OK, a far as I'm concerned, that settles it for me! --Shirt58 (talk) 12:16, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I find it quite humorous that only Bugs, myself and a handful of others realize that this is either a) troll or b) someone so grossly incompetent that they cannot possibly edit here any longer; while others are bending over backwards to accommodate them. Oh, I've seen it before, and some people obviously cannot figure out when they're getting burned until its too late - and even then they usually don't want to admit it. This self-confessed "Lower-Class Autistic Israeli-American Genderqueer Jew" claims to be "homeless because of my gender and sexuality", has their "life threatened everyday walking down the street for being who I am" and is "raped constantly by people trying to turn me straight". Are you fucking kidding me? And they're going to have the money to hire a lawyer and sue the WMF? This person needs a good doctor. Bugs is only calling it like he sees it. WalkerThrough's a Christian, and perhaps could show some kindness to Rainbow, who seems to have it pretty rough. Perhaps a class-action suit that could be the beginning of a beyooo-tiful relationship for them? Doc talk 20:39, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not interested in discussing content of specific pages on my talk page, but for your personal information, the Jewphone bit resulted from a Philly talk show after 9/11. Then idiots started calling in asking how they might get a Jewphone for themselves. I have been trying to find a clip from the radio show, but what I have found on youtube is nor relevant. Sorry I nearly always do I clicked submit to fast and didn't explain myself properly. I actually came here to ask you to remove it that comment, regardless of any warning. But seeing you were already blocked for basically making the same comment here, I felt the best option was just to remove it. Despite myself making a perhaps ill-advised joke earlier in the discussion, the discussion now seems sufficiently serious with clear ill-feelings on several sides, that comments like that are not helping anything. You are entilted to your POV, it doesn't mean you have to let others know of it. Nil Einne (talk) 13:35, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am very angry about this block. I am fairly certain that Medeis is male. Regardless, Medeis makes a HIGHLY OFFENSIVE accusation towards Jack ("telling n****r jokes") and is not held accountable for it??? Something has gone seriously wrong here. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 13:36, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to comment much on the block nor on μηδείς (I've probably spent way too much time on that at WT:RD). But can you not understand why your comment is problematic? If μηδείς is female, saying 'you can't be female because of your behaviour' is likely to be extremely offensive (some may embrace that, but many will not). And when they have already taken offense at similar things, regardless of whether you feel their offense was merited, it definitely doesn't help the situation. In any case, if someone has said they are E, saying you are not E, unless you actually have evidence is simply not acceptable on wikipedia, as a regular at WP:ANI you must know that. (And no, you can't use behavioural evidence to prove someone's gender.) As it stands, I think μηδείς wants to remain ambigious on their gender, so even though I don't agree with the way they've gone about it, I've refrained from making any comments or assumptions (in particular I've made sure I use gender ambigious pronouns which as you may know I usually do when uncertain) except offered explainations where relevant. Also remember whatever mistakes JoO and μηδείς may have done, it doesn't excuse poor behaviour on your part, particularly since little of it was directed at you. Okay μηδείς took issue with your comment about their gender even if they identified JoO as the one who made it, but they don't seem to have been wide off the mark so it's difficult to say gives you much more latitude. BTW, you want to know the funny thing? I vaguely remember reading the joke although didn't understand (didn't think about it) until I noticed μηδείς complaining about, but for some reason I had the impression you wrote it. Saying you are not gender 'E' because of your behaviour is basically an attack particularly if that person is E. Nil Einne (talk) 16:18, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I strongly disagree. While I, personally, wouldn't assume one way or another regardless, I fail to see why it would be an "attack". I guess the defintion of "attack" has gotten stretched in the name of rainbows and unicorns and PC friendship forever. - The Bushranger One ping only 16:37, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You are free to read WP:NPA. You are also free to read this 2004 version. The core reasoning why it's an attack is in both versions. Nil Einne (talk) 16:45, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've read WP:NPA. Sexist comments are attacks. That's alright. But I fail to see how the comment Bugs made was sexist, especially since, as far as I can tell, the person being commented about has not stated their gender at all, instead - as commented above - being ambigious about it. Having somebody else say "they're female", in that case, should be just as much an attack as somebody saying "no, they're not." - The Bushranger One ping only 16:49, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is not because they made a statement or speculated on the gender of the editor. (Well that was a minor problem since said editor has already asked people not to make such statements.) The problem is because they made a comment on the gender where they used behavioral evidence to decide that person's gender. And although it's worse if that person is the gender they saying they aren't, it ultimately it doesn't matter. Saying that 'I know you're male because only a male will behaviour in the way you behaved' is also a sexist personal attack although probably not offensive as the former. (And yes as a male I would find such a statement a sexist personal attack.) If you want to believe someone is whatever gender because of how they behave, that's your choice as I said earlier, but to actually tell someone their behaviour means they are gender E, that's simply not acceptable, particularly when that person you're addressing has already expressed concerns about such statements and when people have asked you not to do so. If it helps, try substituting gender with race/ethnicity or sexual orientation. Nil Einne (talk) 17:00, 11 October 2011 (UTC) Edit: I wouldn't personally ask for a block if someone makes such a statement of me, but it doesn't mean I'm going to say it wasn't basically a personal attack. Nil Einne (talk) 17:07, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Were it directed at me, I wouldn't even consider it an attack, not in the least. But I guess I have thicker skin than your average denizen of the Internet. - The Bushranger One ping only 17:09, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I suspect the average person wouldn't mind, because they'd be happy that someone perceives their behaviour as affirming their gender identity. (I'm not saying this applies to you.) That ultimately doesn't affect whether it was a sexist personal attack though. Note that, I'm not suggesting I'm some sort of super aware metrosexual. I would in fact generally be happy about such a comment to myself, but I also see that it is ultimately a sexist personal attack. Nil Einne (talk) 18:37, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also, applying the block because he explained the reason for his comment to the admin admonishing him (rightly or wrongly) for it, is IMHO extremely bad form. It gives the impression that you're supposed to "sit down and take your medicine", and that you aren't allowed to so much as explain yourself. Should he have commented with the explanation on the ref desk? I don't know. But I do know that blocks like this don't make Wikipedia a friendlier environment - quite the opposite. A community in which "attack" is so broadly defined isn't a happy community because nobody attacks, it's a distrustful community because nobody dares says anything lest it be construed as an attack. - The Bushranger One ping only 16:49, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Resolved
 – Issue is resolved, the horse has been beaten to death, we get the point. Alexandria (Ni!) 21:17, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to respectfully request a review of the block given for personal attacks allegedly made by Baseball Bugs as possibly being too harsh and not sure that I see where he was warned. It is clearly a block that doesn't sit well as given by comments posted to his talk page. It stems from a dispute on the Reference Desk talk page (that really shouldn't be there in the first place as it looks like something for WQA or Dispute Resolution).

I fully respect the blocking admin but I don't believe that the block is warranted.

I will notify the involved parties.
⋙–Berean–Hunter—► 20:10, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Unblock. The blocking admin gave a warning to Bugs about a comment a week after the comment was made. Then, when he didn't like Bugs' response (which was benign IMHO), he blocked. Admins should not be re-starting fires that have long since gone out. Wknight94 talk 20:16, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Unblock - unnecessarily punitive. Off2riorob (talk) 20:24, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Unblock That's a punitive block if I ever saw one. The Bushranger also makes some good comments on Baseball Bugs' talk page. I've never been a fan of Baseball Bugs, but this block isnt right.--v/r - TP 20:27, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak support for block. 24 hours is pretty a short block, rarely an excessive amount of time for an established user who crosses a line after being warned (and yes, Bugs was clearly warned on his talk by Tenofalltrades). The sense of "boyzone" that pervades some parts of Wikipedia is problematic, and it's simply never going to be appropriate to mock or invalidate another user's gender (and/or gender identity). Bugs was warned that his comment was across the line, and went ahead and, rather than backing off, "clarified" the joke. That's not good, and I can see how it might feel necessary to draw line in the sand before anyone got the impression that sexual jokes were ok (I know of at least one other, unrelated, case that happened recently where sexual jokes were made and the offender didn't seem to understand the problem). That said, however, Bugs's comments weren't particularly egregious, and might not even read as problematic to users who aren't already sensitised to gender-related issues. This isn't a "omg ABSOLUTELY" sort of block, and if Bugs shows some indication that he understands that fighty gender jokes aren't a great idea, I think that the issue can be comfortably concluded with an unblock. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 20:28, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's unnecessarily PC. The user, if I understand correctly, has not identified their gender. A comment was made that they were female. Bugs said they were not based on their comments. I do not see how the first comment that they are female is any different than Bugs assertion they are not female. Further, that the incident happened a week ago it cannot be a preventative block in my opinion.--v/r - TP 20:33, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, this may turn out to be a "sensitised to gender issues"/"not sensitised to gender issues" divide, in which case I'll probably show up to be the minority here, and the community is quite capable of overruling me if so. But I do want to point out that though the initial incident happened a week ago, the warning and subsequent reiteration of the (bad) joke happened today, which would tend to indicate that, warned or not, Bugs did not grok that his behavior could be viewed as problematic. That would make blocking in response to apparent recidivism less clearly punitive. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 20:40, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Unblock. I don't even see anything worth warning that strongly about, to be honest. I don't see that the joke (and I don't even see how it's a joke) was complained about except by the blocking admin (who is not the person it was "directed at", in which case I would take the complaint more seriously), and the response to the complaint was certainly not worth blocking over. • Unblock - I'm not an admin, but this appears to be punitive. I would probably not have made such a comment, but if I did, I would not have expected a block to come of it. Especially not after a week had passed, and especially not based on such a mild clarification posted on my talk page. BB didn't repeat the behavior, and so didn't violate the warning. What disruption in this 24 period are we trying to prevent, and how is it fair to block him for such an incident when he hasn't even repeated the supposedly problematic behavior? Blocks aren't intended to be just handed out like this, for mild disagreements...   — Jess· Δ 20:53, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Unblock. Per the above, the comment was a week stale, and not blockworthy. I appreciate that Bugs has not requested unblock, but the block is here for review anyway - so I'd recommend unblocking. If I knew it would not further the drama, I would have undone the block myself citing this discussion as consensus; rather, it would be better for the blocking admin to reverse the block and have done with it. • (edit conflict)(edit conflict)Correct me if I've got this wrong... So, what I'm seeing is that Baseball bugs was unsure about the gender of a user who does not state in English her gender on the userpage, and guessed (rather reasonably) that the user is male. When someone else stated the user's gender, Bugs said "That clarifies it." A week later, that statement was taken by the blocking admin as a personal attack. When Bugs gives a light-hearted defense of the perfectly understandable gender confusion, he is blocked. I don't know everything about blocking policy, but I was under the impression that that sort of behavior was not blockable, or even warning worthy. Is there a general "don't piss off the admins, even if it's not your fault" rule? Ian.thomson (talk) 21:00, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Unblock. I know it's been done now, but wow, this may be the stupidest, most ridiculous block I've seen in a long time, and the way Ten went about doing it makes it even worse. Deserves a trout at minimum. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 21:13, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Unblock. I too am late for the party, so I can only express my happiness that there is a solid consensus against that ludicrous block. Favonian (talk) 21:15, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • (edit conflict)(After-the-fact non-admin comment) I think it can be agreed that Bugs has a somewhat twisted sense of humor. I do too, but I also try to keep it in check, with varying degrees of success. Still, sometimes attempts at humor fail miserably, and are taken in a spirit completely opposite that which was originally intended, resulting in being hoisted on one's own petard. With all that said, I'll offer my thanks to Gwen Gale for lifting what, IMO, was pretty obviously a punitive block. Yes, Bugs can be abrasive, but I also think he (I'm making a presumption on gender here) has a knack for seeing through a great deal of bovine excrement and spotting the core of a given issue, with more successes than failures. That's as far as I go. --Alan the Roving Ambassador (User:N5iln) (talk) 21:15, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A passing note from the blocking admin. Obviously the ship has sailed and there's no benefit to be gained from me arguing my case now, but I do wish that the community had waited a little while for any comments from administrators who have experience at the Reference Desk and who are familiar with Bugs' history there—or for input from me. Examining this block as if it were for an isolated incident without context leads to the questionable conclusion that we have achieved here; were this Bugs' only questionable edit I would not have blocked him. I think "That clarifies it."[19] is an ironic statement. It is ironic in that it doesn't clarify it.
I think the theme of irony is continued in the statement, "I don't actually believe Medeis is female, because women don't act like that"[20] because clearly there isn't a simple way to identify how women "act".
I would chalk this up as a misunderstanding. Bus stop (talk) 23:18, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This is looking like a "please move on, nothing to see here" discussion. Alexandria's marked it as resolved, I propose marking it as "archived" in 10 minutes from now ("now" being 23:33 UTC) unless anyone has a pressing reason not to do so. Tonywalton Talk 23:33, 11 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was just analyzing what went wrong. I hope that isn't the reason for a hasty archiving. I think it is an interesting issue because of the subtlty and the simplicity of the factors involved. Things can be much worse. I was just reading the saga of some user named Zords, whose little "prank" as the sock Shifty 333 mushroomed into a site ban. Anytime one of us gets blocked, we've boomeranged ourselves to some extent. But that Zord case was one serious boomerang. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 19:23, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Charles Conlon baseball park photos

Hi again BB. I know that you and other editors like HarringtonSmith have researched photos of old baseball parks so I wanted to let you know that I recently saw that Neal and Constance McCabe, who published Baseball's Golden Age [21] several years ago, have produced a followup book entitled The Big Show [22] with more of Conlon's photos. You probably already have one or both books but I thought that I would mention them just in case and maybe some other of your talk page watchers might be interested also. Welcome back again. MarnetteD | Talk 20:23, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I need to stop by the local bookstore and see if they have the recent book. Yes, I do have the first one. Great stuff. It's interesting to see the uncropped Ty Cobb iconic pic, for example. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:46, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm charging this to the blocking admin, obviously. Take care Bugs. Drmies (talk) 23:28, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Bugs. I've been almost entirely absent from Wikipedia for a while, with a serious case of real life, but I did see the tail end of this brew ha ha, and I'm sorry it happened. I don't know why, and maybe I'm mistaken, but something told me you are from my neck of the woods. If so, and if by any chance you can attend the thing at the St. Paul library, this admin would be willing to buy you a real beer afterwards, with real foam and everything. If not, consider the gesture honestly intended. I've always thought you add color to this place, which is much needed at times. Cheers. Jonathunder (talk) 18:37, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

KC Municipal from Truman Library

Hey Bugs, whaddya suppose the copyright is for this photo? I know many photos from the Truman library are {PD-USGov-POTUS}, although this one doesn't seem to include Truman at all. One thing that suggests it could be PD is I've noticed some photos' thumbnails are replaced with the words "Copyright Restricted Image," which this image doesn't have. I could always contact the library if you're not sure.

P.S. I read your ordeal above - quite a nuisance! Glad to see you're back in business. Delaywaves talk 01:42, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeh, it was, but I can live with it. I just hated having my blockless streak here broken. ); Regarding the KC Muni pic, I went back a step to the picture page, and there's nothing said about it. I would say wikipedia's stance would be that when in doubt, assume it's copyrighted. If it were me, I would send them an e-mail and ask them explicitly about there copyright policy. Hopefully, they could send you to a link on their site that clears it up. An email response by itself would probably be insufficient. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 05:10, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fortunately, it is PD. I had emailed the library about a different photo, this unusual (but not very enlightening) view of the PG. (Also PD.) She pointed me out to the full image record, where you can see it says "Unrestricted." Will be nice to have a free image of KC Municipal, and the Polo one can go in the article's photo gallery. There are a few other photos from KC Municipal, none showing the stadium itself, but a few of Truman watching games and throwing out the first pitch. Delaywaves talk 02:41, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Not very enlightening" is putting it mildly, as the King is at Ebbets Field, not the Polo Grounds. But if the pics are unrestricted (beyond mentioning their source, of course) then this could indeed be another little gold mine. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 05:49, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dissenting opinion

Hi Bugs, I saw your block happen just shortly before my "5-minute" service outage for a network upgrade, that turned into a 30-hour saga, with 3 hours on hold and not leaving the house for a minute all day then the Telus guy showed up at 4:30 PM - so I missed the fun. I would have vigorously defended your blocking at the time. Less vigorously now, having read your comments over several times, but I would still defend it as appropriate and well within admin discretion:

  • It was appropriate within the current context. There was a highly acrimonious discussion happening at WT:RD, of which you were well aware. Ten was trying to sort that out before anyone from the RD community waded into unfamiliar waters (ANI) where they could get badly shark-bitten. Your actions were not helping to calm things down. One interpretation would be that you'd decided to take the line of "they're saying they never said what gender they were. so I'm going to call them a he, and if they're a she, they will have to say". Anything along those lines would be disruptive, given the tense situation. Even given the interpretation that you were indulging in irony (whatever random stereoetype of women), that was far too obscure in the context. Since you didn't back off and any further posts on those lines would only tend to worsen things, a preventive block was justified.
  • It was appropriate in the long-term context of your behaviour at the Reference desks. I hope you'll agree with me that your edits there are a long way from what they were shortly after you discovered the RDs, and that a bunch of people worked for quite a while to wrestle you down from what you originally thought they were all about. And you still, though less and less, need to rein it in occasionally. This was one of those times, and instead of recognizing it and just backing off with or without an explanation, you showed every sign of continuing. So a preventive block was justified.

So even though I'm an internet-week behind, that's what I would have said. Doubtless I'd get the questions of competence and mainspace edit-count as well, but that's still what I would say. Going forward (and as a given, I think you are a good all-round contributor who often makes witty and very perceptive comments, even when I groan while I laugh), please think again about how you approach the desks. They are a totally superfluous space, apart from, yet part of, English Wikipedia - and they are a beautiful little garden where the very best contributors are the gardeners pottering around, digging about interesting little questions, and they are very tolerant people. Just like your own experience, everyone comes across that space and tries to figure out what to do with it. Some people decide they can make their own rules and have to be disabused of that notion, and you are an edge case for that. Everyone frequents the desks for their enjoyment, just leave enough space for others to enjoy equally. Please keep an internal watch over your own witticism and irony (you are pretty good with the puns though) and recall that the project will not suffer if you don't comment; and please stop getting personal there, whether in disputes with other respondents, or especially your perennial jousts with drive-bys and trolls. You are just as much an enabler as anyone else, more into irrestible target territory for trolls. Given the ANI reaction to your block, you have every reason to send this to archive straightaway, but there you go. And there is the tl;dr Telus revenge for keeping me off the internet and if you read this far Ha Ha Made You Read! :) Regards. Franamax (talk) 04:18, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good advice. Keep yer piehole shut from now on if you know what's good fer ye, Bugs. That block prevented a ton of damage, and was 100% completely necessary. "A kinder, gentler Wikipedia..." it has a nice ring. Doc talk 04:28, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Doc9871, you don't seem to have opted in to the edit counter, can you give me a quick rundown of your activity at the Reference desks? I don't recall having seen your sig there all that often. Nor most of the other editors who commented on the block. If you wish to apply the typical confrontational style of Wikipedia, please do continue to avoid that space. I have no activity at the reference desk: I'm a (talk page stalker) and I've already commented on the block and seen what happened. You and I have encountered each other before in a ban discussion for an editor awhile ago, BTW. I have no need to avoid any area of WP, and I have had no one ever tell me to avoid any such hypothetical area. Until now. Bugs is fine: why not let him contemplate his block without a "I would've done the same thing" speech? Yeesh... Doc talk 04:45, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

e/c with the page owner no less! so I get to orange-bar you once more. :) I was trying to explain to Bugs more of the rationale (or at least what I construe as the rationale) behind Ten's block as I am in a similar, and relatively unique, position to Ten in that I am very familiar with the RD environment, the ANI environment, and the general confrontational enviornment that pervades many article-related spaces but not the RDs. I (mistakenly) was trying to communicate with Bugs on that basis, but of course anyone is free to comment. I just didn't find your seemingly off-hand and all-too-generic comment helpful, and I responded with some snark as I'm really trying to focus on the RD-related issues (which no-one else seems to have done). Apologies, and you are of course welcome to encounter the Desks at your convenience and pleasure, and mayhap you will become another of those aforementioned excellent contributors. Cheers! :) Franamax (talk) 05:11, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Somewhat related is this story told by Alan King:[24]Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 06:14, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Back when I lived in Ontario, I decided to naturalize my 1/2-acre back yard, ie stop mowing the grass. After 5 years you will have almost all native plants, after 10 you will have a diverse functional bit of paradise with no uncontrolled weeds and dozens's's of plant and animal species in the space you put aside for God to work on. And the township bylaw dude, who decides he has other priorities when you show him appeal court decisions on freedom of expression. One time I was sitting on the back patio and noticed something darting around. It turned out to be a very young weasel sheltering under a bit of plywood. It could have run away up beside the wall, but that wasn't how it came there, and it couldn't figure it out - so I went back in the house to ease the stress. A month or two later, I was awakened in the middle of the night by an unearthly and chilling scream. My eventual conclusion is that little weasel grew up and killed a rabbit for dinner. I was so proud of that yard, including the bunny rabbits that called it a sanctuary - and now I had an apex predator too. Mixed feelings, but naturalization was my aim, and I'd truly achieved it. No relation at all to current events, just gratuitous personal anecdote about wabbits and weasels. :) Franamax (talk) 06:01, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Poor little bunny. ); ); ); So, did you leave your lawnmower out in that wilderness area, for creatures to nest in and so forth? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 06:14, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's a whole 'nother story, when the grass was pretty high in the back and I was pushing through it with the mower. They waited right 'til the last moment and all of a sudden just in front of me the lawn exploded wirh mommy and little baby rabbits dashing off in all directions. I shut off the mower and ran away, pleading with them "I didn't know". They never came back to their little home and I realized later that I left the monster behind, I should have dragged the mower away with me. That wa actually one of the big moments that crystallized the nature thing, and at least the back part near the stream never got cut again. It went on from there, those bunnies were practically begging for weasels after I bowed out. :) Franamax (talk) 07:00, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Leaving something by the curb is the surest way of getting rid of it. As regards rabbits and weasels, nature is what it is. As Woody Allen said in Love and Death, "Nature... is basically a gigantic restaurant." ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:20, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I am stuck on the first comment way above: "It was appropriate within the current context." Unless I'm missing something, there was nothing "current" about it. There was an entire week between the context and the warning/block. That's what caused the snow unblock IMHO. Wknight94 talk 16:52, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Bugs, although I don't agree that a block was necessary in this case, I'm disappointed to hear that you're still telling sexist jokes at the Reference Desk.[25] It's great to have some humor to lighten the mood, but please consider being more respectful of your female colleagues. Thanks. Kaldari (talk) 17:42, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah Wknight94, there ya go, precisely. You read one sentence then decided it was time to stop reading and start talking. I could have saved all those extra word thingies after, where I explain what the context was. That is exactly how the situation was evaluated at AN/I, superficially. Franamax (talk) 17:54, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, that's a poor assumption. I read the whole note. None of it addresses my point, i.e., do you really think there was still so much tension a week later? Seems to me that the entire thing had pretty much blown over and Bugs' remark was left well in the past. Wknight94 talk 18:29, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The comment sighted in the block summary was made on the same day as the block. Regardless, this was not an isolated incident. That said, I think there are better ways this could have been handled. Kaldari (talk) 18:37, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps you're too young to remember the songs, "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" (a Marilyn Monroe hit), and the theme from Diamonds Are Forever. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 23:32, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
True, but I'm not too young to remember Larry Summers saying that women are underrepresented in science and engineering due to their lack of "intrinsic aptitude". Sexist stereotypes just aren't funny, and they're certainly not appropriate for discussions with your colleagues on Wikipedia. If your jokes had been about race instead of gender you would be banned from the project already. The fact that Wikipedians have a higher tolerance for gender jokes doesn't make them OK. Wikipedia attracts a diverse group of contributors and we should be respectful of those differences, not poking fun at them or using them to demean people. Although it may seem like harmless fun, to some people it is hurtful and unwelcoming. Kaldari (talk) 02:11, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Summers got a bad rap on that one, as I recall he was actually suggesting that such possibilities should be explored as a possiblr causal factor, which could be institutionally mitigated. I still don't understand what is wrong with noting that if such factors exist, they should be taken into account. I have the map setting on my GPS receiver to always have north at the "top" of the display, my sister has hers set to orient the map to the way she's facing. And she's the one who says it's a biological difference. There's a ton of literature on the differences in how men and women contruct mental "place-maps". And Summers wasn't cracking a joke or blindly perpetuating a sterotype, he was just raising a question. But I digress... Franamax (talk) 02:27, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You know, there's a part of me that can't help but think if Bugs had said "I don't think so-and-so is male, men don't act like that" there wouldn't have been the slighest peep of protest. - The Bushranger One ping only 02:31, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't at the movie openings, no, but thanks to TCM I'm able to access those spiritual states - and I am well aware of the general trope. There's two points here: first, your response at that thread was gratuitous, as unlike most of the other responses you were not providing sourced evidence of a link between giving diamonds and women achieving orgasm without manual stimulation. And there is no such link, though there most probably is a link between giving of jewellery and the likelihood of having a sexual encounter (which was not the question). Now quite obviously, you were trying to make a joke, the smiley-face being a definite clue. So let's look at that humour. We have tons of problems already on the Desks where if a (good-faith) question even remotely involves human sexuality, the sniggering teenage boys at the back of the class feel compelled to jump in with a guffaw or two, and that doesn't fit well with how we try at times to at least pretend we're a valuable encyclopedic resource. And we come back to what I suggested above, that whilst you enjoy yourself at the desks, you should also leave room for others to have enjoyment too. Your comment was meant to be humourous, and yeah, I got the joke. But that's the kind of joke you let out at a poker game with the guys, or dressing after playing hockey, or whatever. Or in mixed company when you know all the people. But would you turn to the person sitting beside you on the bus and say it? Because Wikipedia isn't a locker room or a poker game where everyone know everyone else, it is a bus, and a darn crowded one at that. Your joke would leave a large proportion of our readership cold, either not understanding at all, or feeling somehow insulted. So that's where I feel you're more indulging just yourself, or you and the limited audience that "gets it" (which as you just said, is only the decrepit old farts anyway ;). It's not a requirement for political correctness, just pick your moments. You are well able to crack humour that has broad appeal. Me, I'm about 50-50 on small-smiley comments on the RDs, between commit and kill window. And to Bushranger, noo-o-o, calling a male editor a female is pretty likely to get you a very quick response. It's like the surest way to find out if someone is Canadian - call them American. :) Franamax (talk) 05:03, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
They're all Americans...they're just hiding in the closet. They can't help that they're in the 51st state.
If the Ref Desks are such high profile, why are such threads as Medeis vs. Jack of Oz going on the talk page? That should have been shut down and rocket launched to either WQA or DR.
⋙–Berean–Hunter—► 05:43, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're unwittingly backing up what LC once said to me, that no one cares about the ref desks. Meanwhie, it's becoming clear to me that even properly sourced male-female humor (such as well-known songs and comedians) has become off-limits, even in questions about the subject. That's sad. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 05:52, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Bugs, do you like your carrots boiled, baked, fried or raw? Gwen Gale (talk) 06:34, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Raw. Nice and crunchy. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:35, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, up until a few years ago, we could just shut off the natural gas exports, and the Americans would be the shivering ones. That was before shale gas, which the world now has tons of, but they'll still take our (supposedly) dirty crude oil, which note, is proposed to be piped unrefined down to where the refineries have grandfathered (high) emission limits.
The RDs are not high-profile at all, they exist as a dumping-ground for inappropriate Help desk questions, although they do rank up there on my watchlist with the ANx boards as most-recently-changed. The simple (though incredibly patronizing) answer to why disputes don't get bumped up is that the RD community tries to solve its own problems, and many deskers would not stand a chance in the rough-and-tumble of the general encyclopedia, where sharks circle in all waters. To start with, WP disputes are evaluated as to their potential to damage the encyclopedia articles, and in the case of RD disputes, the risk is essentially zero. So who would even bother to comment, except to take the desks to MFD? Bugs, yes, no-one cares about the RDs, that is what makes them such a special happy place. And I'm missing something here, did Marilyn Monroe say that diamonds gave her an orgasm without manual stimulation? The subject was female orgasm, not what pleases females in general. And to return a bit to Bearean's statement, where else on Wikipedia would you have potentiallly made that comment? You made it on a RefDesk, was that because you think the desks are a good place to make jokes? You make many edits at AN/I too, how well do you think such humour would go over there? Franamax (talk) 06:35, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you missed the quote from Jay Leno, about women in a survey about what turns women on, actually being turned on by the money they received for participating in the survey! Underscoring that joke is the fact that women, in general, are practical, and not so sex-obsessed as males are alleged to be. Regardless of that subtlety, apparently Jay would get run off wikipedia if he made that joke here. (Generally related jokes by Lenny Bruce, Jerry Seinfeld, Larry Miller and Chris Rock immedately come to mind, and if they were users, they would probably get banished also.) The ref desks did, indeed, begin as a spinoff of the help desk, as questions began to appear that were about facts rather than about wikipedia as such. ANI is mostly about disputes between users, so I can't think of a likely context in which pointing out the practical side of women would figure into it, outside of an edit war about a related article. In reference to the OP's question from early 2010, I've known women who could climax with very little direct stimulation. That's OR, of course. 0:) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:44, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just had to say that your posts at the Abusive sysop are spot on. Especially the once about taking 5 or 10 seconds to investigate what was going on. If I had any talent at all with photo shop I would try to whip up a userbox that stated that "AGF isn't just for newbies". Frustration over that is driving responsible admins away just at a time when we need them the most. Personal attacks

Wangleetodd (talk · contribs)

Please do not attack other editors, as you did at [[:[26]]]. Comment on content, not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Your use of words such as "idiotic", "troll", "bad faith editor", "blatant lie" etc. is quite offensive and against wikipedia policies WP:CIVIL, WP:NPA, WP:AGF, and you need to refrain from this. Met Stadium photos

Hi again, I just got a Flickr user to change the license on a great series of abandoned Met Stadium photos. (Their descriptions on Flickr all include the fact that he took them, so we should be OK on the deletion front.) I decided to put them in a gallery on the Met's article, but had to remove your closeup of the red Killebrew chair due to a lack of space. Please change anything you'd like, since it's pretty rare for me to make edits like this without flaws! Delaywaves talk 22:08, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, awesome and also sad. The closeup of the chair is still in the MOA article, so that should be OK. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:22, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

question

How long are you going to keep encouraging DeeperQA? As they say in the deep south, you can't kill a weed by dumpin' crap on it; weeds like that.--Ludwigs2 15:38, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to figure out where he's coming from, or what his complaint is. But I'm beginning to think that figuring it out is going to be a tall order. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 20:51, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I don't think he's that complex. he's obviously relatively smart and highly opinionated, and he's come to the conclusion that the project is (for some reason) suppressing his viewpoint. He's got that kind of defensive activism that you see in extremists on both ends of the spectrum (that "I have a right to force you to listen to me" thing), and I suspect he is reveling in being indeffed because in his mind it (a) proves we think he's important enough to take action against, and (b) confirms his sense of victimization. I actually think he might be a good editor if he could get the chip off his shoulder, but that chip is so much a part of his wikipedia identity that I'm not sure that's possible.
No idea how old he is - he sounds a lot like a college undergrad - so it may just require some maturing. or maybe he's an ideologue who's never going to mellow. But either way what he needs is some time away form the conflict for his attention to wander. if you really want to talk with him, I'd suggest you drop it for a month and try again; see if anything's shifted. --Ludwigs2 21:51, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking he really did not "get it" and I was trying to explain it. But it's running the risk of getting circular. So laying off for a stretch is probably a good idea, unless the tone takes a positive turn. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:12, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
His comments are making less and less sense, so I have taken him off my watchlist for the time being. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:40, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

...what the heck this was about? Wknight94 talk 22:13, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I just can't imagine what they're referring to. All I could find where me, baseball, and the year 2006 crossed paths was Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Fort Myers Miracles players from several years ago. Otherwise, I'm at a total loss. Wknight94 talk 22:20, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Which is why I've stopped responding. He keeps talking about the British government being a sockpuppet of Wikipedia, and how such sockpuppetry has been illegal since 1776. Besides, you took care of it.) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:08, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop stirring the pot here. We are well past the point where anything constructive is being discussed. Comments that don't speak to how to reach a productive resolution to the original content dispute are disruptive. If you think user conduct on the part of Maunus or anyone else needs independent review, you can pursue the appropriate channels separately. Regards, causa sui (talk) 20:20, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Another interesting effect of that volcanic disruption

Hi Bugs. I noticed your comment about the cooling effect of the Indonesian volcanic eruption (the Mount Tambora#1815 eruption for any talk page watchers that might be interested) on Off2riorob's talk page. The subsequent Year Without a Summer had one impact that I've always found interesting. In May of 1816 a group of "Romantic" writers and artists had gone to Switzerland to enjoy and commune with nature. As one of them wrote "incessant rain often confined us for days to the house". Under the influence of ghost stories that they had read (and perhaps some recreational drugs depending on which accounts you read) they decided to write their own supernatural tales. As you are probably already aware one of these turned out to be Frankenstein or, The Modern Prometheus. I still find it fascinating to contemplate that, without that volcano's eruption, they probably would have spent the summer hiking and swimming and we might not have that wonderfully influential work. As I say I suspect you already knew this but I thought I would share it with you and those that watch your talk page anyway. Have a great Turkey Day next week. More on WP:RD/H

Do you know why the Democrats basically switched from racism to supporting black rights? CTJF83 18:35, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) I don't know about the Democrats, but I saw a documentary about the propaganda war between the Soviet Union and the US in the late fifties. The Soviets were the stars in the space race while the US was ahead as being a happy place to live. And then images of black people being mistreated in the South started making it's way around the world. People were horrified. Not good, especially in newly independent African countries. That image had to get cleaned up quick as a bunny. SlightSmile 02:47, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's amazing how long it took for the USA to live up to its supposed ideals. And it never goes away. Much of the criticism of Barack Obama has a racial undertone to it. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:37, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ya, land of the free, all men are created equal...what a crock of shit. Thanks again for your answers, CTJF83 08:46, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
At least we try. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 08:50, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's an incredibly complicated question. More often, the questions asked are (1) why, when and how did the Party of Lincoln become the party of the White South? (a process that began as early as the Disputed Election of 1876 followed by Rutherford B. Hayes' removal of Federal troops protecting black citizens in the Reconstructed South; was advanced by Southern defections from the Irish Catholic, anti-prohibitionist New Yorker Al Smith in the Election of 1928; took definite form with the 1964 nomination of Barry Goldwater, who'd voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 more for ideological than racial reasons; and later became irreversible under the Southern Strategy of Richard Nixon, Strom Thurmond and John N. Mitchell) and (2) why, when and how did Negro voters move from the Party of Lincoln to the Democrats? (a process that began abortively as early as Woodrow Wilson's 1912 campaign, definitely gained pace with the New Deal, was strengthened by the Civil Rights plank in the 1948 Democratic National Convention, and became permanently entrenched with the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act of 1965, Fair Housing Act of 1968 and the Great Society programs of Lyndon B. Johnson).
¶ Some possibly fortuitous circumstances helping the Democrats move from a Negrophobic to an integrationist stance are (a) the personal views of the First Lady: Woodrow Wilson's first wife (Ellen Axson Wilson, 1860-1914) was even more of a segregationist than President Wilson, while Eleanor Roosevelt was a militant advocate for equality, and (b) the fact that FDR was president when A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin and the March on Washington Movement put immense nonviolent mass pressure on the government to establish a Fair Employment Practices Commission for wartime workers. Less fortuitous, but harder to document and specify, was a movement away (at a faster rate than the general public) from racist attitudes among many intellectuals, progressives, liberals, leftists and labor activists. As a more concrete, practical matter, the Great Migration of the 20th century moved millions of Southern blacks into Northern industrial cities, where (able to vote as they had not been able in the South) they formed an important constituency that Democratic urban machines could not afford to ignore. Nor, in the long run as opposed to immediate conflicts, could labor unions, who both had moved closer to the Democratic Party and needed to organize new domestic migrants for the same reasons that they had to organize foreign immigrants: to reduce non-union competition in the labor market and possible sources of strikebreakers.
¶ There's ton more to be said (and learned), but I'll give some disorganized bibliographic references as best I can remember them and their authors:

To see how the Democratic and Republican platforms evolved over the years, see The American Presidency project of the University of California, Santa Barbara at http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/index.php The platforms are searchable, so you can enter a search term like "Negro", "civil rights" or "lynching" to see how different platforms treated a subject in different years. Particularly interesting are the Democratic and Republican platforms of 1948, which were both strongly pro-civil-rights, and which can be compared with the even more fiercely pro-civil-rights plank of the Progressive Party and the staunch segregationism of the States' Rights Democratic Party, who walked out of the 1948 Democratic convention to run Strom Thurmond, then Democratic governor of South Carolina, for President.

Proposing Major Content Changes on a Page

Hi! You seem to know your way around questions like this, so I am coming to you for advice. I hope that is okay. Recently, someone changed the content of Autoblog. It is now a discussion of automated blogs, rather than an article on the more widely-recognized usage related to the automotive news website, Autoblog.com, which gets 2.4 million visitors each month. I have recreated the Autoblog.com article in a manner that clearly demonstrates notability. I've also initiated a discussion on the Autoblog talk page suggestion that we change content, while including a hatnote link to the newly-named "Autoblog (automated blog)" article. My question to you is, is there a tag I can place on the current Autoblog page, or talk page, suggesting this content change and pointing to the discussion I created? If so, what is it? Thanks in advance! Ebikeguy (talk) 16:03, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I added a "Split-apart" tag to the article in question. Was that the correct thing to do? Thanks. Ebikeguy (talk) 16:22, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You're getting into areas that I don't have a lot of experience with. If it were me, I would say go ahead, and see what the reaction is. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 06:03, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Demi Moore

"Most" is unprovable

Huh? There are a finite number of biographical sources, most of which list her birth name as "Demetria". Although I can prove it to you, I don't have to because the secondary sources say this, not me. Where exactly is your confusion? Viriditas (talk) 09:57, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the "most" sources simply copy from each other. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 09:59, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's a reasonable assumption that you can apply to most articles. But not this one. In 30 years, there isn't a single retraction or correction on this. Not one. All we have are Wikipedia editors interpreting Twitter feeds. That's not good enough. Viriditas (talk) 10:12, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In the absence of concrete evidence, such as a birth certificate, Demi's statement trumps any so-called "reliable" sources. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 10:57, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Most

"Most references say Moore’s name at her birth in 1962 was Demetria Gene Guynes."[31] Viriditas (talk) 11:37, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Editorial speculation. Unreliable as a source. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 12:09, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, an observation by a secondary source about the state of biographical literature is highly reliable, and that's precisely the kind of reference we look for when we write about such topics. Editorial speculation is when a Wikipedia editor reads a Twitter feed, which is a primary source, and interprets it to mean something without a secondary source supporting it. That's generally not acceptable. And for the record, I looked into the matter. Most reliable biographical sources list her birth name as Demetria, although it isn't clear why, if she does dispute it, she has never disputed it within the last thirty years. Viriditas (talk) 12:15, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"[X] is the name I was born with" does not require interpretation. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 12:35, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What's up, Bugs?

Hey c'mon bugs, usually I love reading your salty comments at AN/I and elsewhere but this one had a touch too much vinegar in for my taste. Where's fluffy, cuddly ol' Bugs disappeared to? Kim Dent-Brown (Talk) 18:14, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Thumper seems to have appointed himself as Bugs' foil some time ago, and is known to take potshots at him on AN/I for Bugs'... willingness to lend his opinion there. He's done it to me before, too, saying something to the effect of "AN/I already has one Bugs, and we don't need another." Too bad anyone can comment there whenever they want, and not just admins. Since Bugs won't listen to him, and Thumper knows this, it's probably for the best that he not stir the pot and jump in to "solve" situations that Bugs is already a part of. You know, to create less drama. There's lots of other admins perfectly capable of solving problems over there. Jus' sayin'.... Doc talk 18:59, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Stalking my talk page is fine. There are very few rules here. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 23:13, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
He seems to have a chip on his shoulder about some of us for some reason. He's not the first admin to make gratuitous personal attacks, of course. Hence, as regards the Crackerjack box, he's not the first one I've hit with that theory. I just think it's a funny idea, that you would open your Crackerjack box, and instead of finding a little toy or a puzzle or a coupon good for a free visit to your orthodontist, you would get a card that says, "Congratulations! You have just won an adminship at Wikipedia! Use it in good health!" ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:24, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A prize in a Crackerjack box! Wow maybe I should apply. I don't know about Thumper but I've seen RfA's where the applicant got really grilled and dragged over the coals. Not a fun process. SlightSmile 22:57, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See the far from gentle treatment doled out to the tender, fragile, easily-bruised ego of this talk page's subject at his own RfA. ;-) One consolation is the number of friends he had there. —— Shakescene (talk) 05:39, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hideous. So many admins act like angels until they pass their RfA; and then the glee sets in. If you "call it like you see it" beforehand - "Oh, he's a big meanie". Pfft. The meek shall inherit the earth - until the tools are given to them. Doc talk 05:49, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As Shakescene points out, posting an RfA is a good way to find out who your friends and enemies are, as well as actually garnering some occasionally thoughtful and constructive criticism. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 07:41, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As for User:Thumperward, whom I've encountered as an admin a couple of times, and then recruited to close the latest battle over Talk:The Bronx/Name, he can be a bit brusque in tone (as when he was impatient to delete a template of mine) but he seems basically OK. —— Shakescene (talk) 06:29, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, Thumper's not a bad dude. But he needs to lay off Bugs - it's not helpful when he preaches to him at AN/I. Doc talk 06:32, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting others' comments from talk pages

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do this. Don't worry, I've restored the post you deleted. An explanation however is requested. Nomoskedasticity (talk) 05:32, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't often mess with others' posts, but I make an exception for things that appear to be BLP violations. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 06:39, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But there was nothing in my post that constituted a BLP violation. Misinterpret the header if you must (but why? I thought your gig was all about the laughs), but for the rest... Nomoskedasticity (talk) 13:09, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Pretty sure that Bugs was fully right on this one. Let's not edit-war over BLP's now. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 13:13, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I concur. Definitely a BLP problem on that one. Bugs was correct.--JOJ Hutton 13:17, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Doubling down, are we? Here is the text of the post that Bugs deleted: "It gets more delicious. One of the noble edit-warriors is now edit-warring over the thread header (see the history for this talk page). It goes without saying -- really it does, on this particular talk page -- that "fully stupid" refers to the edit war, not the person. I have nothing but respect for Ms Moore, whatever her real birth name might have been." Where is the BLP violation? Nomoskedasticity (talk) 14:07, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Don't forget...his revert also removed the BLP-infringing section header - that's the kay aspect (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 14:09, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Let me join the chorus of people who support the removal. I suggest you let it go. Bugs reverted to the last version before your BLP violation.[33] If you edit war to make a BLP violation (which nobody but you has apparently interpreted as anything other than what you actually said) then don't complain forever if the reverter doesn't spend time sorting out your mess. Your later comments became irrelevant anyway when the heading had been removed. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:59, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I concur with the chorus as well, BLP is serious business.AerobicFox (talk) 18:06, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

One song I like, I have no way of knowing the name and can't make out the words (or obviously I'd google the string) and the tune is actually tricky to recall. One day I'll get it. And now I rant - I think it's wrong to start burning Christmas out right after Halloween. I'm going to pass a law about starting it before December 1. Yeah that's what I'll do. Sounds like more Dubya - buying toaster ovens is going to solve our problems. I'm big on the one percent thing. The people just don't have the money even if you start Christmas in the Summer. SlightSmile 23:45, 27 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's how those cats stay fat; they seldom spend and they certainly don't impulse spend. Bielle (talk) 00:09, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And better yet, they get us to bail them out. I'm reminded of the punch line of a particular comic strip (maybe Doonesbury, but I don't recall) in which a wealthy guy was asked about his success: "When I turned 21, my dad said, 'Son, here's a million dollars. Don't lose it.'" ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 00:25, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's actually easy to do. There's stories of people who won ten million dollars, thought they could do anything they want and in a year they're flat. One guy in Manitoba hanged himself. A twenty one year old - good luck. SlightSmile 00:55, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If I were stuck in Manitoba, I might be suicidal too. A similar joke is from Richard Armour's It All Started With Columbus: "When Richard Nixon turned 21, his father gave him a gold watch. When John F. Kennedy turned 21, his father gave him a million dollars, because he already had a watch." ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:23, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Where'd I put that Suicide template - I'll have to get Oversight here immediatly! You got something against mosquitoes and thirty below? My father gave me a good alarm clock where you could set the rings to - well a really nice alarm clock and I broke it. Shit happens huh? SlightSmile 01:46, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the Manitoba comment relates to an Ole and Lena joke: the famous Norwegian couple buys a house near the border between Minnesota and Canada. They engage a surveyor to determine which side of the border the house is really on. Turns out it's in the US. Ole says, "Well, dat's a relief, yoo betcha - 'cause I hear dat it gets real cold in Canada!" ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 02:28, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
