Flag of Iran

Hi! where is your source for use this flag. Iran for Iran between 1925 to 1964? as i know this flag is wrong. see it Can you please repair this? Kind regards and sorry if it is not your duty. mohsen1248 (talk) 01:10, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

It wasn't me who created Image:Flag of Iran (1925).svg a couple of years ago... If the flag is wrong, then we can certainly change Template:Country data Iran to make some corrections. Let me know (either on this talk page, or better, on the template talk page) what the list of flag variants should be (image names and suggested label names), and I can edit the protected template. Also, we'll need to correct all the instances where the 1925 label is improperly used. Thanks — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:03, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
(PS: thanks for your help in corrections on the Iranian Olympic pages and athlete names!)
I search a lot to find correct flag of Iran (before 1979), but unfortunately i cant find exact data about that, but as i know Iran's Flag was Green, White and Red + Lion and Sun and im not sure about detalis.
i think before 1979 no one cares about details of flag. Iran used different flags for different olympics and asian games, look this flag (Iran at opening ceremony of 1958 Asian Games) and this photo (Iran at opening ceremony of 1956 Olympis). at last i think it is better if we use Iran flag for 1925 to 1964. (im not sure about that but i think it is better).
about olympics, i find many photos to show correct flag for all olympics (except 72 summer and 64&76 winter). what are you think ? can i change it or not ?
thanks and sorry for my bad english ! mohsen1248 (talk) 19:55, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
I have updated the templates to use Iran for the 1925 variant and Iran for the 1964 variant, per the Flag of Iran article (state flags). This seems to match the photos you found. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:19, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Flag of Greece (1970-1975)

Hello! I left a message at Template talk:Country data Greece with this request, but received no response. Could you please add the Image:Flag of Greece (1970-1975).svg as a flag version of Greece. The Flag of Greece article says it was indeed official.  ARTYOM  16:39, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

I updated the template a couple of days ago. Note that you'll attract the attention of more admins if you use the {{editprotected}} template on the talk page, as I may be the only admin who has that template on a personal watchlist. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:19, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

A template that should interest you

Hello! Recently I've been adding categories about the Olympics to a bunch of Olympians (you know, Category:Olympic athletes of the United States, Category:Athletes at the 2004 Summer Olympics, etc.), but it's bit of a hassle and it's quite easy to miss out on one or two categories. So I've created a template that can do the job automatically. It's located at Template:Olympic competitor.

Let's say somebody competed at the 2004 Summer Games in athletics for the United States, and won a gold and two silvers. Then we can add this:

{{Olympic competitor|2004 Summer|United States|Athletics|gold=1|silver=2}}

Voila! The page has now been added to

The template is still very preliminary, and since you're an expert in templates, any suggestions and edits from you will be really helpful! Thanks! Chanheigeorge (talk) 23:26, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Looks good! I don't normally spend much time on individual athlete articles, but I can see how this would be useful. One thing I can see is that there may be a lot more nations that need "the" in front of the name (Netherlands immediately comes to mind), so I wonder if it would be simpler and more robust to move "the" into the template call (e.g. ...|the United States|...)? — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:19, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
By my count there are 25 nations that needs "the" to be added. Since it's a fixed set, I think it's okay to implement it in the template. I don't really expect people to remember adding "The" to "Gambia", or "(country)" to Georgia, or that categories are named "Taiwan" instead of "Chinese Taipei", so doing the translation within the template is more user-friendly. Another thing is I'd like to implement is to allow either IOC codes or the country names. If you have any more suggestions, please post at the talk page of the template Template Talk:Olympic competitor. Chanheigeorge (talk) 22:04, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Another question

I don't think medals in Olympic art competitions are official, right? Currently, Julien Médecin is in Category:Olympic bronze medalists for Monaco. I've removed him from the category previously but he got added back by User:Irregulargalaxies (I've left a message at his User talk:Irregulargalaxies). Any thoughts? Chanheigeorge (talk) 06:21, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, at the time they were certainly official. It was only later that the IOC downgraded those "events". I would think that we ought to apply the same treatment for these artists as we do for the medal winners in the 1906 Intercalated Games, also retroactively downgraded by the IOC. For example, we don't include those totals in any medal table, but we do include them in the "medal record" infobox and medal categories for athletes like William Sherring, so I think I agree with Irregulargalaxies on this one. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:19, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Okay then. Chanheigeorge (talk) 21:59, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

VK's status

Hello Andrwsc. I mistakenly thought a community ban, meant the banned editor's personal page was off limits to him/her. My apologies. GoodDay (talk) 18:05, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

No worries, there seems to be plenty of confusion around his status. You are correct that a banned editor is not permitted to edit anywhere, but the MediaWiki software allows blocked users to edit their own page, presumably as the mechanism by which they can contest blocks. In Vintagekits' case, if he continues to communicate via his talk page, it ought to be protected and/or deleted since he is banned. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:19, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Flag template issue

Hi Andrwsc, A few days ago I posted here Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Flag Template#Problem when countries change flags about the issue of wikipedia pages showing incorrect flags, due to a current inadequacy in flag templates, in the event that a country's national flag changes in the future. You seem to the admin associated with the "Flag template" project, so I thought I would post here to ensure the topic caught your eye. I see this as an important issue for a few reasons:

  • It is a flaw that (potentially) affects all national flag templates
  • It is not simply something that can be fixed by someone (such as yourself) altering the code of relevant templates, as it would also require values for a new field to be entered whenever someone applies a flag template in the future.
  • For the reason above, the sooner the problem is fixed (if feasible) the better, to prevent future pages springing up with the same bug and instead have them "immunised" from it.

Like I have mentioned, I do not know what the difficulty is of fixing the flag templates in the way suggested, but I would appreciate your input on this matter. Thanks. Juwe (talk) 08:31, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Responded on the project talk page. I'm interested to see what you propose (implementation-wise), as I feel this change would add tremendous complexity to these templates, for marginal benefit. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:55, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 17:04, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

hi, Andrwsc, i found Badminton at the 2008 Summer Olympics - Qualification with unverified list and not publish by BWF itself, so i decided to hide and add May 1 ranking to address my concern until it really publish by BWF after May 31 because BWF need response from each NOC to finalise their selection. Unfortunately Mohsen1248 said the list is no problem and no need to change. So, i hope i can receive your device for this because i hope i can give the true to anyone who read it and also i am hard very hard in badminton area to make sure everything is true. West Indies Flag

Hi Andrewsc,

I have an easier and less important issue for you this time. I have recently been editing some articles involving the West Indies cricket team. Although it plays as a "national team", it is actually the team of a group of nations bound together as the West Indies. As its wikipage shows, there was no existing flag for this group of countries from the British West Indies, so the West Indies Cricket Board designed a new flag for the team (Cricket West Indies). When the templates for "flag", "flagicon" etc are used, or even {{cr|West Indies}} West Indies, hovering the mouse over the resultant flag gives the words "Flag of British West Indies". I suppose that it might be reasonable to use the flag as the flag of the British West Indies considering there is no other flag for this group of countries (as is currently the case: Template:Country data West Indies), if indeed such a flag is useful for purposes other than cricket. However the words for the flag (whose image is called "West Indies Cricket Board Flag.svg") should, at the very least for cricket-related use, instead say "West Indies Cricket Board Flag". As to what to do, I think the options are:

  • If the flag is only ever used in a cricket context, change the "alt attribute" to "West Indies Cricket Board Flag"; or
  • If the flag is also used in other contexts, maybe leave the "alt attribute" as it is, except for in the "cr" template and optionally in the "flagicon" template (if this is possible...this option is starting to get messy though). This would however still be somewhat misleading as the flag isn't actaully the official flag of the British West Indies; or
  • (My preferred option and I suspect yours too) change the "alt attribute" to "West Indies Cricket Board Flag", regardless of what the use of the flag is.

Thanks, Juwe (talk) 08:08, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Done Looking quickly at Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Country data West Indies, it appears as though almost all instances are cricket related. There is a West Indies national rugby league team that also uses the flag, but perhaps as there is no better alternative. Even so, the alt attribute is better changed, so I did that. Hope this helps, — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 15:59, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for that. Juwe (talk) 17:34, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Good luck yourself! I was surprised and saddened to see you leave. Just to be clear, you want me to delete all the redirects from the old username, and also delete the subpages from the new name as well? Would you might if I moved some of the userboxes to User:UBX, for example, as they appear to have been adopted by some other editors? Again, take care. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:12, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Sure, you can move them there! What I was trying to do was to loose the redirect. I was going to move them back to the old username location, and delete the versions at the new username location.
Moving to User:UBX and deleting both the versions at the new and old username locations would be brilliant, but would involve work to rewrite the links from other users pages, no? Alternatively, you can just move them to User:UBX and redirect from the old username. I'll leave it to you, I'm making such a mess of it, anyway. Thanks for everything! --Grahamzilch (talk) 21:18, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi! Why does not the template  Comoros (COM) work in the right way, i.e. show the following flag:  Comoros? Punkmorten (talk) 08:15, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

The two templates work from different data structures. More relevant is that Comoros didn't compete at the Olympic Games before 1996, so there is no need to have the Olympic flag templates support historical flags before 1996 (which is why you see a redlink). — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 14:58, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Burma/Myanmar discussion

I put the topic at the top of the page because it was referring to a recent and important change. If it is policy to add new topics to the bottom I will respect that, and not move it back in future. I think the sudden change of name should be highlighted and discussed though. In a previous comment I quoted a BBC article on Burma/Myanmar with the following line: "The name change is a form of censorship."

Coats-of-Arms

With some nations, first-level administrative subdivisional flags are hard to come by. I want to discuss a way to use the coats-of-arms of those areas in an icon form in such situations. Particularly, I wanted to do that with the propinsi-propinsi of Indonesia. I'm having trouble finding such a template and it seems you have deleted the template talk page for flag icons, which would have been my best port of call. I understand that you like to keep discussions on the page where they originated and I agree with that, but because my watchlist moves quickly, and I don't know you well enough to predict your response time, I would really appreciate a short message on my talk page just to notify me that you read this, my first message to you. This has the advantage of springing up a "You have new messages" alert that signifies that I have engaged your attention as soon as Iog on. Thank you ever so much.

)--Thecurran (talk) 10:48, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure which deleted template talk page you are referring to. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Flag Template is still the best place for centralized discussion, and every individual country data template has its own talk page for specific details. As for the coats-of-arms, we seem to have some consensus against using them in icon form. See Wikipedia:Manual of style (flags), which tells us Do not use subnational flags without direct relevance. The Inventing new flags and using non-flag stand-ins section does not explicitly call out logos or coats-of-arms as "non-flag stand-ins", but I've sure I've seen that rationale used on some articles in the past. Anyway, I'm happy to discuss further here on my talk page, but at some point, a larger audience is necessary and I think the WikiProject talk page and the MOS talk page are the two best places for that. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 15:54, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
I was talking about the page on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:Flagicon/doc , which was where I followed my nose to from a flag icon. At first it appeared to me that you had closed all discussion. I now see that that is not the case and that Template talk:Flagicon and Template talk:Flagcountry are available. We make extensive use of subnational flags and I think they should be preferred over coats of arms, but sometimes like with Indonesia such an alternative (flags) is not available. When I next log on, I'll check out Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Flag Template, to see what Wikipedians have historically said about the issue. Thank you ever so much. :)--Thecurran (talk) 23:31, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, a documentation subpage is never a useful place for discussion, it should be on the template talk page instead. There never was any discussion there—all I deleted was an inappropriate redirect. Also, I do encourage you to check the WP:Manual of style (flags), which discourages use of subnational flags without direct relevance. The talk page there would get useful comments from many editors. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 23:39, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
I had never heard of a document subpage. I was trying to find out how a certain template functioned and I happened to end up on one. I have spent a lot of time on Wiktionary, where the differences make some things more compex and others more straightforward. Over there, discussion rooms make it easier to figure out where each discussion should take place. I did not understand that I was not heading to the <Template_talk> that I now know how to find. Perhaps a redirect from a document subpage discussion is helpful if it goes to the correct discussion arena. Coming across a deleted discussion page in a genuine search for answers is quite discouraging. :)--Thecurran (talk) 06:00, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

SRB in 1912

Did not exist. It was a different state - Kingdom of Serbia which used a different flag and it should be listed as different. Also I do not see why in the case of YUG we cannot list that this exclude Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and also Montenegro, Serbia. -- 193.198.128.149 (talk) 23:54, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

The website of the Olympic Committee of Serbia describes the The first Olympians of the Kingdom of Serbia. And yes, the Serbia at the 1912 Summer Olympics article shows a different flag and links to the Kingdom of Serbia article. As for the exclusion of MNE and SRB from that footnote, it's pure logic. If MNE has never competed and SRB won nothing in 1912, why would we have to explain to the reader why non-existent and zero-valued totals are excluded from YUG totals? — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 00:07, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

List of players for a team

Does the list have to be done all manually, or is there a trick to make it? Maxim(talk) 21:43, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

I used hockeydb.com for the numbers, and pasted them into a big Excel spreadsheet. For example, from here you link to each of the season pages. After that, it was easy to create Excel formulas to generate the wikicode for each table row (i.e. totalling multiple seasons together). From there, I manually double-checked the link to each player's name (to account for article targets with disambiguation names or diacritic marks) and for the nationality of each player. I cross-referenced all of the numbers against the totals in the paperback Oilers media guide, which I also listed as a reference. As it turns out, hockeydb.com is rather accurate, so there were only a few minor discrepancies at that point. Hope this helps — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:51, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
The spreadsheet idea is a very smart one, I haven't thought of that. This helps a lot, I'm attempting to make the Senators' list featured. Thank you very much! Maxim(talk) 21:53, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
On a related note, did the usage of the {{FixBunching}} template on the Oilers list fix the problem you saw using Firefox as your browser? I saw your support of the FL candidate (thanks!) but I didn't see any confirmation that this template solved the problem. Thanks — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 22:53, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
It did. :-) Maxim(talk) 23:29, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Olympic medal count pages

At the FLC for the 2004 page, Tony1 said "I'd love to see added to the table the number of medals per million inhabitants. That would sort out the sheep from the goats"

I have seen this statistic included in some tables, and I would be open to adding it, and was wondering what you think. If we add it to one page, we would have to add it to every other one. This could be a huge headache if we can't find a source because then we'd have to track down old population lists. -- Scorpion0422 14:53, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh, dear God, no! This has been the crux of multiple AfD discussions in the past (primarily for WP:OR reasons) and there is no possible way these could be featured lists if such material was added back into Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1996 Summer Olympics medals per capita for the precedent setting discussion. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:29, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
