Crimson Editor

I do not understand why you did suppress the page Crimson_Editor when I see that the result of discussion was "keep" in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Crimson_Editor

This seems to me very arbitrary, and I do not understand why a tool that I use every day has not its palce in wikipedia. That is to say for me, that I cannot trust Wikipedia.

Pierre Couderc pierre@couderc.eu —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 62.212.122.39 (talkcontribs).

Hello, Mr. Pierre. In the article's second AfD, the place where editors discuss whether an article merits its own article, the consensus was to delete the article. Personally, and in this case precisely, I am neutral. Remember that administrators, and all of Wikipedia, work on consensus. Furthermore, a user requested a deletion review, here. Again, consensus was in support of the deletion. Please read up on WP:N and WP:CORP and, if you think you can rewrite the article, please do. I will also restore the text for you if you need so. BaRiMzI

D'oh! I see you left a note for BaRiMzI, too. I was in the process of leaving him a lengthier note. Maybe two notes at the same time will get him to understand. He's got five notes from admins telling him about his AIV reports. =\ -- Gogo Dodo 16:54, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

One can't but assume good faith in such cases, but it does tend to get irksome, especially after finding out that this is not the first time it happens. By the way, I blocked the spammer for 3 hours, just in case. Cheers! —Anas talk? 17:01, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
Re your message: Yeah, but several notes about his reports from five different admins over several days and it's stretching the limits of good faith. But what one is supposed to do about that I have no idea. I'm certainly not going to block somebody for trying to help out, but how to get his attention in the future, I'm not sure. As for the spammer block, that probably wasn't necessary. The links were added in five days ago. I checked Special:LinkSearch and it wasn't linked anywhere else. -- Gogo Dodo 17:05, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, it was probably a bad idea to block the IP. I didn't notice the date... I was sort of in a rush (busy with something else), so I assumed the spamming was recent.

Greetings!

Hi Anas,

Thanks for the warm welcome! It's always nice to be back. I see you've done great work especially on the Syria Portal, keep it up!

As for the city/town issue. You know that in Arabic we only have the word (مدينة) for both, and that creates confusion when translating to English. And that makes any classification we try unofficial. personally, I prefer to call the governorate capitals "cities", and the rest "towns". However, since the government does not differentiate between them when chartering a new city/town, and the Bureau of Statistics translates (مدينة) as "city", and since you're keeping it consistent across articles, I'll agree with you to keep them all as cities, but I suggest to use the term "X is a small city" where appropriate. What do you think?

Vandalism report on iTalkBB

Thanks for looking into my report of repeated blanking by 216.141.201.178. If you take a look at the talk page for iTalkBB, you'll see that the person or persons responsible for the blanking tend to rotate through a set of IPs and sockpuppet accounts. I believe these are intended to circumvent the blocking policy, as the frequency of blankings on iTalkBB averages about one ever week or so. Could you please let me know how to do either of the following?

1. trace and document probable sockpuppets

2. make the case that the rotation is a special violation of the Wikipedia vandalism policy

Thanks!

Banazir 23:59, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. Incidentally, the vandal in question has blanked a section of iTalkBB (the only one this particular IPvandal ever tampers with) again, for the second time in three days. Does the warning count reset with each calendar month, or does the fact that he's been warned five times in the last few weeks get taken into account?

Hello my name is Stuart Weafer. I too live in Ireland and have currently bought his album. I just used wikipedia today to find information about him.this is the only source. I seen the deletion thing and i wish to object!!! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Stuart Weafer (talkcontribs).

Stuart, or should I say Sean, there is no good reason to do this. It's clear that you are the same person as Sean Dempsey; a newly registered account just to notify me (and so soon after its nomination for deletion)? You can get blocked for sock puppetry. —Anas talk? 00:23, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
ok sorry that was cheap but my friend stuart is actually here beside me. i dont really understand the reason for deletion? Is there harm done to anyone? all statements and facts are true. I didnt even lie on album positions, they didnt even chart but still are released. Please check itunes stores. Other artists who are just singers that also have not charted anywere are here on wikipedia with no complaints. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Stuart Weafer (talkcontribs).
Well, see the problem is not whether its existence will harm Wikipedia - no. The issue is that unfortunately the article's subject is not notable per Wikipedia's standards and fails biographical articles' criteria. Thousands of articles of non-notable individuals are created and deleted every day. Despite the fact that many are harmless, imagine how would Wikipedia turn out if these articles were to be kept; it will eventually lose its integrity as an encyclopedia. Right? Cheers! —Anas talk? 00:34, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
So theres no subject to it? It is like anyone elses music wikipedia page. Go delete britney spears, rihanna's,the pussycat dolls, lucia evans. All pages are the same. I am going to report this severly. There music career differs in the fact that there worldwide famous...thats all. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Stuart Weafer (talkcontribs).
Does your article meet WP:BIO? I gave you the link in your article's talk page; I guess you didn't check it. Anyway, if you think it can pass any of the criteria, we will gladly keep your article. —Anas talk? 00:43, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Syrian Occupied Lands

Dear Anas,

I appreciated your advice on how to improve the write up on the Hatay issue on Syria's page. I know further work is required. I am writing another part relating to the Golan heights. Israeli occupied it is, I am trying to highlight its position as an illegally annexed. This is factual however, unfortunately I am being hindered by someone with an Israeli agenda. Whilst the article i have provided requires tidying up (to avoid making it a personal narative) i would appreciate your help once again.

I am a British Syrian who feels that the lost lands of Syria need someone to speak up for their integrety and legal soveignty.

Thanks again

There is a user who is constantly reverting my edits: [1], [2], [3] and [4]. I've repeatedly asked this user to come participate on the talk page (through my edit summaries:[5], [6] and [7]), but he/she has ignored me.

The user is removing sourced content, introducing some spelling errors, inserting unsourced content and disrupting the chronological order of the content. Could you help me out, or atleast direct me to where I should be seeking such help? Thanks.Bless sins 02:03, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

A personal favour

Because I've created so many articles with the {{Arabic}} template with which you have aided me, I was hoping I could ask you to translate one or two Arabic phrases for me (transliterate in the alphabet for me, I'm still very new to the Arabic alphabet, I can sound things out and guess at words...but my spelling is therefore atrocious). I was hoping for the Hadith "Seek knowledge, even if you must go as far as China" ("Utlubu al-'ilm, walla fil-Sin") and the misattributed "Seek knowledge, from the cradle to the grave". Thank you very much, there's no rush at all - just if you have a spare moment :) Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 03:15, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Much thanks, because I'm moving it to handwriting, I just wanted to check my spelling with you a final time if that's alright...
alif-ta'-lam-ba-wow

fa'-ya
alif-Lam(silent)---Sod-ya-nun
Also, would the transliteration "utlub al ‘ilm was law fi al-Sin" be more accurate than what I said before? As I said, I'm still very new to Arabic - I apologise for all the questions. Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 22:30, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Is it كفرعقاب? Badagnani (talk) 04:30, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Ha, it took me over an hour to find that! I'm glad to have the software I got from some Hungarian guy's website that allows me to type Arabic using the arrangement of the Latin keyboard. I love it. But in this case I found it by doing a Google search for the name Nassim Maalouf (in Arabic script) and adding المتن (the name of the district the village is in), then looking for something that began with كفر.

Regarding the Lebanese's lack of pronouncing the "qoph," I had heard that many Lebanese aren't easily able to pronounce this letter correctly, and I guess it's true. Probably it's because in the current Arabic world there used to be many, many languages (both Semitic and non-Semitic), whereas now Arabic is exclusively spoken in most countries. Like in the dialects of Italy, for example, phonetic sounds from Etruscan Greek and Celtic languages may persist in the vocabulary and pronunciation. Badagnani (talk) 07:03, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Khalil al-Wazir Arabic script

Greetings Anas! I was wondering if you could provide the Arabic scripts for Khalil al-Wazir and his kunya Abu Jihad. Surprisingly, such a major Palestinian figure was missing an Arabic translation. Cheers! --Al Ameer son (talk) 01:48, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

your picture of Zweitina

Hi there, Anas,

I know how busy you must be, but I was hoping I might be able to ask a few questions of you. My great-grandparents emigrated to Pennsylvania from Zweitina; in trying to find some information about their village, and having read the Wikipedia article, I was thrilled that there was a picture of the village, too. I'd love to know what your experiences were when you visited: How it is you happened to visit, what the people were like, the weather, how the people lived and dressed - basically anything you would be willing to share with me. And if you don't care to and/or don't have time, I very much understand.

Thank you!

where are you?

Brother, where have you been? Haven't seen you in a while though you've done some recent edits. Are you okay? Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 00:36, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Just wanted to check, I worry when people go off radar. I have no needs now, but when you're settled back in, I could use some of your formidable Arabic skill as many of the Wikipedia versions of Scout emblems in the region are rather substandard and could use improvement, but the artists would need the Arabic text. That's for much later. Glad to hear you're okay! Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 07:19, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Can you type out the Arabic text on these images? I have a graphics editor who will fix these if I can get him the text. Thanks! Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 22:05, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Alright, here is what I could get (in order):
  • Text too small
  • الجمهورية العراقية | استعد
  • Text too small. جمهورية العراق for the words up, but can't get the text below. My guess would be the same as the one directly above.
  • جمهورية العراق
  • كوني مستعدة | مرشدات البحرين
  • الفتيات الكشافة | كوني مستعدة
  • A bunch of acronyms | كوني مستعدة
  • وأعدوا
  • م م | كوني مستعدة
  • م ك | الفتيات المرشدات
  • جمعية كشافة الأرز

Need help

Hi, for the life of me I cannot remove the stray letters near the dates in the leads of Aziz El-Shawan and Abu Bakr Khairat. When I move the letter, everything in the right-to-left area moves around. Could you help? Badagnani (talk) 02:37, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Problem solved. —Anas talk? 04:01, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

I wish I could figure out how to fix it the way you did (so I wouldn't have to ask again in the future). I tried and tried. Badagnani (talk) 04:12, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

The trick is placing the date before the script and using the template for the script. Only way it works. At least here, because it seems numbers are written left-to-right in Wikipedia, even if you have Arabic as your selected language. —Anas talk? 00:44, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Typing Arabic on MS Word (Windows XP)

Hi, can you help me with a question? The computer person at my university has just helped me install right-to-left typing on the Windows XP computer of Halim El-Dabh. I already have the Arabic ASDF Western keyboard, which works great on the Internet to type Arabic, but in Microsoft Word the Arabic letters didn't connect, even though I had clicked "right-to-left" in MS Word. So today he brought the Windows XP CD-R that allowed for the installation of complex scripts and right-to-left typing in Windows and MS Word.

Now, the problem is that when I set right-to-left and the Arabic ASDF Western keyboard on MS Word, I type an Arabic word, then hit the space bar, it puts the space to the RIGHT of the word instead of the left, then the next word I type goes to the RIGHT of the last word I'd typed. The Arabic letters are connecting and typing from right to left, it's just when hitting the space bar and typing the next word that the words are not following one another in the right order. About an hour ago, I had it working correctly, but now it's reverted back to the incorrect way. The only way to put the words into the right order is to move the cursor after each word and insert a space, or to cut and paste words, but I think there must be an easier way.

I guess the fix should be something easy, but I just can't figure it out, and hope you might know. My home computer, with Windows Vista, works fine for Arabic even without installing anything; it's just the XP that causes problems (since the version Windows is the English one, not the Arabic one). Thank you.

Now it's working again. I don't know what I'm doing to make it work, or not... :-(

I just opened a new Word document and it's stopped working again. I notice that when it is working properly, the line between letters is short, but when it isn't working, the line between letters becomes very long. I wonder if this has something to do with it. Badagnani (talk) 17:30, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

In the language and regional settings, try setting the language for non-Unicode programs to Arabic. If I remember correctly, that should solve problems for Windows XP. Sorry, been a while since I last used XP. :-) —Anas talk? 00:42, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll see if I can figure out how to do that. Badagnani (talk) 23:40, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Districts of Rif Dimashq, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Districts of Rif Dimashq has been empty for at least four days, and its only content has been links to parent categories. (CSD C1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Districts of Rif Dimashq, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. Greetings:)

I came across your page while researching the history of Syrian Americans. I wanted to asked you...what do you think about the Syriac/Assyrians and the Syriac Orthodox Church. These are from Syria but they differ from the Arabs in the fact that they use the aramaic lanugage and have different traditions and also come from a seperate lineage and geneology. They are similar in other ways to the Syrian Arabs in food and the fact that many can also speak Syrian Arabic. Yet they are a different people. Would they be included under Syrian American/Canadian even if they're not arab? I included a section about them in the Syrian American article. What do you think? Replaceable fair use Image:Maramritaall.jpg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Maramritaall.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Peripitus (Talk) 03:48, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Hip Hop Theater/Theatre

I have an issue with an article I created last week and I'm hoping you could help me with it. This month I've been in the process of doing a complete overhaul of the hip hop dance article and I noticed that the theater section was becoming rather large. So in order to follow WP:SS, I created a new page titled hip hop theater and copy-and-pasted everything there. The problem is there is already a page for this but it's called hip hop theat"re". After I finished my page (theatER) I did a google search to see if it would come up and the other page (theatRE) was listed in the results. I honestly did not know that it existed. What do I do now? I was going to blank the theatRE page and put a redirect link there since the theatER page (the one I created) is longer and has references. Am I allowed to do this w/o offending someone and violating policy? Is there a formal process for this? I posted this question another admin's talk page but they never responded so I decided to ask you. Since you're also an admin and since you've created so many articles, I figured you may be more familiar with an issue such as this. Gbern3 (talk) 15:37, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

The use of definite and undefinite articles in the English language

Dear mr. Salloum,

Since you are the founder of the Wikiproject Syria, I write a few lines to you. It concerns the use of the definite and indefinite articles in the English language. I have been busy copy editing a few articles all related the Muslim conquest of the Middle East: Muslim conquest of Syria, Battle of Maraj-al-Debaj, Siege of Damascus (634). The people writing these articles don't use the definite and undefinite articles as often as they should. I guess it is caused by the fact that the Arabian language doesn't use that often the definite article but this is just a guess. But its effect on the quality of the articles is severe.

What I was thinking about is that you create a new template message, warning people writing English articles about the use of the definite and the indefinite article. It is one way to avoid many errors in English articles written by Arab speaking people.Wereldburger758 (talk) 11:43, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi Anas Salloum, you once assessed article Mate (beverage) [9] by adding the WP Syria template. Suspension of admin privileges due to inactivity

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative privileges of users who have been inactive for one year, meaning administrators who have made neither any edits nor any logged actions in over one year. As a result of this discussion, your administrative privileges have been removed pending your return. If you wish to have these privileges reinstated, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Non-free rationale for File:Montadashot.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Montadashot.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. File permission problem with File:Marmarita Carnival.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Marmarita Carnival.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

File permission problem with File:Hamama-PhD-AUC.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Hamama-PhD-AUC.jpg, which you've sourced to http://web.archive.org/web/20061106212700/http://www.fatenhamama.com/.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 02:05, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

Al-Bukamal

Hi there,

I wrote the entry for Abu Kamal a few years ago, it has been changed to Al-Bukamal and Al-Bu-Kamal. Although Abu Kamal was widely used by international media when the US army attacked a place in the area, I understand why it has been changed to "Al-Bukamal". But can we lose the dash in the name, it becomes inconvenient when the article links to social media (Facebook etc). It is also strange style, other areas (with two names) typically do not have dash in the name. Abu Dhabi, for example.

Also, Al-Bu-Kamal is not a variation, it's just phonetics (how it is pronounced). Can we have the two variations only, Abu Kamal and Al Bukamal? I tried to edit it but I am not that wiki-savvy.

PS. I think Abu Kamal is the better choice for a number of reasons. It should not matter how locals pronounce it, a counterexample is Abu Dhabi (locals pronounce it as Bu Dhabi - exacly the same way locals from Abu Kamal pronounce Abu Kamal (Bu Kamal). 2. Abu Kamal was used in media as such. 3. Name was used as Ebu Kamal during the Ottoman times, when the city was built to begin with. But if the name were to stay like this, could we please lose the dash in Al-Bukamal and Al-Bu-Kamal? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.211.131.189 (talk) 12:38, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Lan a3terf.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Lan a3terf.jpg.
