around for a while

You gonna be on for a while? Can you help me out with sock fighting. I have Xtreme Pro Wrestling, Tommy Dreamer, Janet Romano, Rob Zicari, Sting (wrestler), and Jeff Jarrett watch listed. he opos up about every 15 mins. He has sleepers that bypass semi protection. I dont see full protection as the best solution as of now. If you could just help me keep an eye it would be appreciated. Any other admin out there, feel free to watch too! Thanks -- Chrislk02 (Chris Kreider) 01:06, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello

Hey Alison/Archive 11. See your an admin and all, I was wondering if you could help me. About 5 months ago (January acutally) I created an article named Swiss-Canadian War. It was deleted at this afd: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Swiss-canadian war. I heard that all deleted articles are stored somewhere, and I was wondering if you could copy and paste the article into my subpage at: user:pahomeboy1992/swiss-canadian war. Thank you! --Pahomeboy1992 02:22, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

  • I restored it with one caveat: this should never appear in mainspace again. Never, ok? It's been speedied twice as hoax/nonsense and is failed BJAODN material (well, kinda). I'm trusting you here, so don't let me down - Alison 05:48, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for restoring it. I have no plans to add it into the mainspace again, hence my reasoning for asking its recreation on one of my subpages. Thank you! --Pahomeboy1992 15:30, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Question for you

Hi Alison, I've run across a user page of a younger editor (12 according to their talk page), with a great deal of personal information in it. I seem to recall a policy about removing that type of information for underage editors, but I can't seem to find it. Am I just hallucinating, or does such a policy exist? User in question is Pevey haventz. Thanks. --Celain 02:39, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi there. Both user page and talk page have now been deleted. Thanks for that! - Alison 05:19, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
If such rules apply, you may want to inform R/Techwiz. Pahomeboy1992 02:43, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Techwiz is just fine. Firstly, his page is devoid of personal info. He says; "... you are unlikely to ever find out my real name". Also, he isn't displaying information on someone else! - Alison 05:19, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
I think the essay is Protecting children's privacy, although it wasn't strict on deleting personal info... --Dark Falls talk 05:51, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for that link. Hadn't read that essay before - Alison 06:01, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks Alison and DarkFalls! --Celain 13:55, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Rory Gallagher

Another Irish related issue! I'm looking for some advise on the addition of linkspam to Rory Gallagher. It looks like the same anon IP user is deleting and adding the same linkspam from different IP addresses (mainly 84.58.xxx.xxx) that seem to be in the same IP block. While I keep reverting the additions I wonder if it is possible to do an IP block so I can relax a bit on this one? Another anon IP user in the 142.163.xxx.xxx block also has been adding similar linkspam but seems to have stopped for the moment though he complained that I have no right to place warnings on his talk page! Any advise appreciated. Cheers ww2censor 13:37, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Yeah, the article is out of control & those links being repeatedly added are blogs (fails WP:EL). I semi-protected it for two weeks, which should help ease the situation - Alison 18:22, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I'll still watch it. Cheers ww2censor 19:04, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Accomodated changes in SSG article

I've removed that image which is disputed by anon for now (until i get a better source) and made subtle changes to the tone that should convey the meaning without compromising on facts on the Kargil War section of Special Service Group article. Idleguy 16:38, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Ok. However, I've fully-protected the page for the moment as both of you need to sort out your differences on the talk page or failing that, call for mediation. It's been going on for weeks now and needs to stop. You both have now been warned for 3RR for today, too - Alison 17:31, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
OK. I'll try talking to him if he doesn't keep shouting back at me and follows the Wikipedia policies on sources etc. btw, the previous weeks reverts were mainly about his reinclusion of copyvio addition. only the last week or so it is primarily about factual accuracy. Idleguy 01:10, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Semi-protection of Disappearance of Madeleine McCann

Hi, I wonder if I may ask you to reconsider the 2 week protection that you have placed on Disappearance of Madeleine McCann? While this article is regularly vandalised it is well watched and the vandalism is reverted promptly. We have also had some good anon edits. This is the type of high profile article that attracts new users. Past short protection has tended to calm things down. I was thinking that 5 days was a better period. TerriersFan 17:24, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Mmmm. I'm not seeing a whole lot of constructive edits from anon editors. In fact, there are some SPA new accounts which are adding some pretty sicko material to that article & I'm concerned about BLP issues and the fact that, being highly visible, it has the potential to bring WP into disrepute (like the George Washington debacle of a few weeks back). Feel free to overrule my prot. though, if you like, as you're a lot more familiar with the article than I am. I won't mind :) The request did originally come through on WP:RPP - Alison 17:30, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
    • An example of a recent good IP edit is here. But that is a BTW. You make some great points and I'm going to leave matters as they are. Firstly, even with 'permission' I really don't like overruling another admin and secondly I have no reason to think that my judgement is any better than yours. If another admin steps in, in due course, then it will be time to reconsider. TerriersFan 18:51, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
      • Dunno if you're a member of "unblock-en-l", but an irate email was sent in from a reader who'd been shocked by what she'd found in the article. People are noticing. I take your point, though and again, don't mind if you or anyone else overrules. Thanks again - Alison 18:55, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Nah, it's okay. :-) Protection conflicts often occur when two admins review requests that seem to be on the borderline of protection need. If in your opinion protection was needed for this one, then it's fair enough to protect. Keep up the good work. Best regards, Húsönd 17:32, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks for that :) And sorry for stepping on you - Alison 17:33, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello and Sorry

Hello Alison I was unblocked for good behavior and wanted to tell you I am sorry for what happened in the past.

Quoting Benjamin Franklin "Insanity is doing the same thing, and expecting different results". I had everyone telling me the same repetitve phrases over and over again, asking them what they meant, and not understanding because they said the same thing and expected me to understand, it is not like I am asking to hear it again because this is on a screen, I could read it again without having to ask.

Like you told me to assume good faith, and I took that as a passive verb (subject is object of verb) that you were telling me to assume good faith on my behalf, and I asked what you meant and you pretty much just repeated yourself. Obviously not saying you are insane, but it was an insane way of trying to communicate with me. I am also autistic which makes communication even harder. -PatPeter 19:49, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Wow! Well, welcome back, PatPeter. Apology accepted - let's just put all that behind us now & move on with editing WP. Best of luck and if there's any help you need, just leave a message here - Alison 03:49, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
Also ... ummm ... and I mean this in the best way - maybe you might want to remove those pmails you've been posting on your talk page? Some folks believe that posting email in a public forum is a Bad Thing. Just a suggestion, mind - Alison 03:54, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks and help

Response.

To give you some info on what happened, there was a Wikipedia page for the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivan. I decided to give the Monterey its own page, and deleted its info off the Freestars page. Sable than threatened me by saying if I deleted the info againn that I would have my account blocked from editing. I than asked her not to threaten me and than you sent me a message asking me to "tone down". Me and you than got into an argument and the last comment you posted about me said "Right now, your chances of this succeeding are zero. Please leave this editor alone already. They were quite justified in posting the original [[tl|delete3}} template on your talkpage - I checked. Please try to work with other editors here, and assume a certain WP:AGF on their part rather than going after them as you are right now - Alison ☺ ".

I than sent you a message saying "First off, I was not in the wrong. In no way was I or anyone else notified that there shouldnt be another page for the Monterey. There wasnt any bulletin, message, or post letting anyone know this information. Second, if you consider my comments rude and uncivil than I certainly would consider Sable's to be as well. Third, I was not reported on Wikipedia:Administrators' as I just went there and didnt see any report or complaint against me." to which you answered " I'd like a little context for this, so I'll know what you're referring to. I've no idea as to what you're talking about - Alison ☺ 22:38, 31 May 2007"

I will now explain myself again. I was not in the wrong, as you said I was. There weren't any messages, notices, or letters saying that the Monterey info was not to be removed from the Freestar's page. Had there been notification of that than yes, I would have been in the wrong. Next, you said that my comments were rude and uncivil. As far as Im concerned, if you actually consider my comments to be rude and uncivil, than I certainly would consider Sable's to be as well. She threatened me for absolutely no reason. She could have said 'Please dont remove the Monterey's info from the Freestar page as we would like the info on both van's to be on the same page.' Instead she threatened me by saying if I removed the information again that my account would be blocked from editing. Next, you said that I was reported to Wikipedia:Administrators. That was untrue as I went there and searched for my complaint and there was none. I hope this explanation helps you understand the situation as I wasnt in the wrong. Sable was and I will defend myself against these outrageous complaints from you and Sable. You both are ganging up on me and its not called for.

Guus Hiddink

I need the article on Guus Hiddink reverted because the last version of the article is from a sock. The page is currently under a full protection and I'm unable to do this. Thanks. Kingjeff 04:39, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Sure thing. The editor has been confirmed as a sock and is indef'd. However, can you go to the talk page and put up an {{editprotected}} request, so the request is visible to the community? I've no problems doing it but would like it to be visible. Thanks - Alison 04:42, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Hey - I was a recent changes patroller for long enough (still am!) - I can remember the frustration of waiting for an AIV request to be handled. However, being on the other side of the fence now, I can see all the hassle and hard work. It's not always easy being an admin & you have to remember that we stress out sometimes. Sorry you're having a bad one, though. TOC is deliberately teensy, by the way. Page was getting too cluttery! - Alison 06:40, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Nicely Done

Just wanted to congratulate you on your WP:AIV work, specifically on New Rochelle High School. My hasty reversion completely missed how damaged the page was, but you took the time to find a good copy, semi-protect the page and ban the vandals primarily responsible. Nicely done! • Delighted to help! Thanks, too, for caring about the article and reporting the vandalism. I picked it up on WP:RPP, actually! As it happens, poor old MartinBot even got overwhelmed by the nonsense over there. Fun's over now, though :) - Alison 06:46, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Personal Attack, silly vandalism

Hi Alison,

User Gerash77 inserted stupid statment here saying that the Gulf is also called "The American Gulf" in Arabic. I reverted his nonsense difined as Silly Vandalism and warned him in his Talk Page not to do so as he is established user in WP and supposed to know this before inserting jokes in articles.

  • Firstly, and just for the sake of "revenge", he tag my Talk Page with meaningless rubbish [1] without pointing why it has been used for, which is clear Personal Attack and damaging in my Talk Page Wikipedia:No talk page spamming.
  • Then, he deleted the Warning from his Talk Page [2] that is clear vandalism according to Wikipedia:Removing warnings.

So, I would like to to take an action in:

  1. Removing the trash he filled my Talk Page with
  2. Punish him of doing so
  3. Punish him of removing a legal warning of vandalism according to WP rules, for special the Silly Vandalism.

Kind regards, Ralhazzaa 13:36, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi Ralhazzaa. I'm not about to 'punish' the above editor, for a number of reasons. Firstly, I note that you've been in gross violation of the three-revert rule on the article in question, as well as not assuming good faith about your fellow editors. Gerash was well within his rights to warn you about such matters. I disagree that his warning was a 'personal attack' and cannot view it as being such. Furthermore, removing your comment from his talk page, annoying though it may be, is not 'vandalism'. Finally, as an admin, it is not my role to 'punish' other editors & this is something I feel rather strongly about. - Alison 10:14, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Well... if u seriously consider inserting silly words in the lead in such a disputed article as "also called in Arabic as the American Gulf" for describing the Arabian/Persian Gulf as nothing serious or not a silly vandalisim, then we have a problem either with u here! What will be your reaction if someone wrote in the intro of the UK article: "also known as the tail of USA" or "Khomaini is also called as the Great Antichrist in Farsi" or such silly & stupid word about Ireland? U may know that the article is higly disputed and that fellow had contributed in it before, so he know what is the meaning of such a silly addition. Was my warning illegal? I have learned this from reading the rules, and apply it on established user of opposing POV who want to dishonor other POV members.

Regarding the so-called 3RR, why not a prestigeous admin had a look when a sockpuppet of a user was deleting the intro and doing simple vandalisim (it was not my words, another neutral editor -could be British- said so). That IP sockpuppet of Pejman.Azadi deleted the intro and all its resourced info more than 5 times, that make me revert it to its previous state, with resources. The last time was that silly vandalisim (see difinition) done by Gerash77.

I protected the article (semi-protection) but that IP user looks already registered with his IP name and could reverting it. Could u please tell me what is the difference between 3RR and protecting against anonymous deletion by IP users?

Please note that my edits never deleted a single word from the article. All what I did was inserting high-level references (as required & encouraged in WP). I don't think citing resources talking about Arabic name of something needs discussion and approval of Iranians or others!! strange, hah? I also inserted historical names of that sea as one Iranian user want to do so in the intro. But it looks he/they want to manipulate the intro and put only one name for the sake of political reasons. Why they want to reomve names have been used for ~100-400 years?

This is my comment, just to clairfy the point, and to discourage you of adopting, protecting and endorsing silly vandalisim by those who want to make WP as place for hateness. Why don't u lead them to the sandbox instead of blessing? Ralhazzaa 13:02, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Come on, Sir, and watch what is your negative neutrality towards that user, Gersh77, has resulted! [3]
Sir, you may be responsible of "ignoring" to take an action toward that fellow who is filling my own personal Talk Page with his noxious edits. Please notice that he is using uncivil language: "why are you trying to bring your "mummy" into discussion". Ralhazzaa 15:06, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
*sigh* - firstly, I'm not a "sir". Secondly, there are already three other admins on your talk page trying to work with you to impress what exactly it is you are doing wrong here. I strongly recommend you listen to what they're trying to tell you rather than focussing on the "vandalism" of their warning messages. If other editors are inserting nonsense into the article, as above, warn them and ultimately, report them to WP:AIV. Regardless of what's going on here, I am not "endorsing"anything here, silly vandalism or otherwise - Alison 17:30, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
And one other thing; spamming admins' talk pages & 'shopping' for the response you desire will not help matters - Alison 17:35, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi Alison, sorry for the previous comment. It was due to the 2nd time throwing of tags of unjustified warning by that fellow in my page (just for personal revenge, while he is asking me to assume good faith!). I felt that he did so as he didn't receive the correct directing from u as the admin who protected the page. Anyway, what u called canvassing was also becuase u didn't show any reaction, so I asked other admins to stop him insulting me in my talk page. Thanks anyway. Ralhazzaa 13:54, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Rename Article

Could you rename the article Gcse astronomy to GCSE Astronomy please. Thank You. A quick question, can normal users rename or delete an article? Wiki.user 19:18, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Already done by yourself. I've deleted the original name as it's now a redundant redir. Normal users can rename/move articles but cannot delete. The thing to do is put a {{db}} tag on the top of it and state your rationale. An admin will then come along and delete it for you - Alison 01:13, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

for being kind, and protecting my user page for me, due to vandalism, i really appreciate what Alison has done, thank you, This was awarded by Chaza93 19:16, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Alison; there are currently 229 items in this backlog. Are you doing anything special?--Anthony.bradbury 19:49, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

  • I'm on-and-off here today. When I get a few mins, I'll pop over to CAT:CSD and see what needs doing. (hint to other admins reading this!). BTW - you've been doing an excellent job in keeping CSD down to sane levels - Alison 22:48, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Michael Jonovanic

Can You please tell me how to access the Michael Jovanovic article trhat was recently deleted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Topahend (talkcontribs)

  • I don't think I want to do that. Apart from the fact that you recreated the article many times and it's been speedy-deleted each time, it's just a nonsense article. It's not even funny in the WP:BJAODN sense and I can't see any good coming from either restoring it or your accessing it, give that you've already been indulging in vandalism and creating nonsense articles. You're one step away from being blocked from editing - Alison 02:34, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Ha - I only found out because I checked your contribs with Popups and saw the page referenced. For the record, I was checking your edit history because of the database-lag-weirdness and because you happened to be handy. Pure co-incidence! - Alison 02:29, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Vandal

Alison, while doing research for a project, I noticed a vandal. He is IP address 165.138.63.100. He has written nonsense such as "They are all gays and like little boys like Michael Jackson!" and "YOu All SUck." I suggest you look at his history and block him if it is appropriate. I know you will handle it responsibly. AlexHillan 04:55, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi Alex. This editor hasn't edited, let alone vandalised, in weeks. I think it's okay to just warn them now & see if they do it again. Thanks for the note! - Alison 18:33, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Continous harrasment

Hello Alison, Despite you told Gerash77 to stop his harrasment and personal attack in my page, but he still posting harassing and trolling comments in my personal talk page [4], even after you told him to stop it [5] throwing away all what have been told about civility and etiquette in Wikipedia. I don't want him to touch my personal talk page in such illegal and harrasing way, and to stop his open & continous personal attack. Ralhazzaa 16:38, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

  • I've left a message for Gerash77. I don't know what's going on between you two, but both of you need to call the matter closed and step away from each other for a while. I've said similar to the other editor. Your use of the words "illegal" isn't helping your case, unfortunately, as Gerash77 has chosen to interpret that as a possible legal threat which will, unfortunately, get your account indefinitely blocked if you persist. - Alison 18:29, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Told You

I hate to point out and you can check the page history if you like but someone from that ip address has vandalised the wymondham college article again for the too many times to mention time. I hope now that you will see why we need this article at least semi protected.Wiki.user 18:12, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

  • So I notice. And my point still stands; there is simply not enough activity to warrant protection of the page. Feel free to re-apply on WP:RPP and I'll see another admin deals with it instead of me, but one anon editor in 4 days does not warrant action. I notice that the anon has not been warned since last month. I've given them their only warning for vandalism. If they do it again, report them either to WP:AIV or to me here and they will be blocked - Alison 18:31, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

RFP

Thanks for the short-term semi-protection of Talk:Labrador Retriever as I requested, and removing the personal attack. I think that sometimes, if you can get people to stop and think, you can get them to actually think. Not often, but it's always worth a first try. KP Botany 19:20, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Erm?

In case you hadn't noticed, I lack the tools to "unprot the usual suspects". I'm just listing them for open proxy checking and blocking, and to catch any sleeper accounts created using them, from what I've seen people are well ahead of me with vandalism and reports, plus my PC is going painfully slowly. Nah, let him use up his open proxies with pointless stuff, at least here, it's easily seen, easily noticed, and easily reverted. It uses up his pot o' proxies without affecting his usual targets. SirFozzie 22:59, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Fark.com protection

Hi Alison,

if I get a minute, could you please review the full protection on Fark.com?

From my point of view, the entire edit war pretty much happened in a pop-up on my watchlist and I'll happily admit that I haven't been following the off-wiki discussion at all. But, frankly, it looks to me like we've passed the point of diminishing returns and since there doesn't appear to be much going on in terms of discussion, keeping the page protection in place might do more harm than good.

Considering the history, semi-protection probably isn't a good idea in this case. Hence, I'd propose issuing another stern warning on the talk page, knocking on wood and unprotecting the article. FWIW (I'm a bit busy right now), I'll try to keep an eye on the article and possible 3RR violations, should you decide that unprotecting it is the way to go.

Thanks & cheers. :) Seed 2.0 23:16, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Unprotected - I agree. Unprot'd .... let's see how it goes - Alison 23:21, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Sting (wrestler).

That page is being hit with mass vandalism by IPs. Shouldn't it be semi-protected? Acalamari 23:52, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Nope. It's doing its job ;) - Alison 23:52, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
What do you mean? Acalamari 23:54, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Shhhhh!!! Say nothing ;) - Alison 23:56, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
  • I'm sorry Alison; I was unfamiliar with the situation when I posted the above messages. I just assumed it was loads of IPs vandalizing one page. I should have paid more attention to the fact that you were not the only administrator reverting the vandalism. My error...I'm sorry. Acalamari 00:15, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Heyyyyy - don't be sorry. It's a useful exercise in troll management :) Not to mention an insight into open proxies. Do a whois on some of those IP addresses - Alison 00:16, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Kingtee

Don't know if you noticed, but see the section regarding Kingtee on my talk. In the first diff he apparently impersonates you on RFPP. In the second (or third, don't remember), he impersonates my signature, with usertalk links back to my talk page. I've indef blocked him for harassment, as he also vandalized someone's user page on top of that. You may wish to review. SWATJester Denny Crane. 02:26, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Ignore that. I was mistakenly looking at a Curr, not a Diff, so it included your own edits as his. He's not done that, however the other things I mentioned did happen. SWATJester Denny Crane. 02:35, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Immediate blocking

May I just point out that not everyone is fully aware of the entire expected wikipedia etiquette, and immediately blocking someone who trangresses, unknowingly, without first giving them a detailed warning, is entirely unfair, and also somewhat immature? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.245.136.27 (talkcontribs)

  • May I just point out that calling someone a "fucking cunt" and a "stupid fucking prick" is also somewhat immature and, depending on the circumstances, will sometimes get you a short block. Doing it in RL to someone will sometimes get you a punch on the nose. I'd have thought these things would be self-evident. Thanks - Alison 14:32, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Gazzo Macee article

I noticed there wasn't this article so when I started to create it I noticed you had deleted a previous one? Any reason why that means I shouldn't recreate it or was it just deleted because it was a really small stub? Can't really tell what the original page says and unless you have the reason saved in a log somewhere, not sure if i should create the article or not. Thanks! Deflagro 19:17, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi there and thanks for asking :) It was deleted 6 weeks back as it was considered a non-notable biographical stub article. By all means, create the article but you'll need to establish notability and flesh it out a lot. I've undeleted it here, so you can work on it yourself from what was there before :) Let me know if you need any help - Alison 19:39, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
Heh. Didn't realize you responded because I forgot who I asked! I noticed it later on Here and looked at the History and found myself back here! The reason I asked is on the magic (illusion) there is a list of people and this name and some others didn't have articles. Just tryin to help out! Thanks again. (btw if you reply can you do so on my talk? I will probably forget your name again!) Deflagro 00:00, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Didn't forget your name this time! Could you glance at it and see how it is? I added more to it and also added several references. It's still a stub kinda but I can't find much more without going to the bookstore! I guess you can either reply here, my talk page, or on the article's talk page. (the article is still here) Deflagro 01:17, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Heh. Yep, stole that style. Gonna work on my own but never used Div before >_< Did you get a chance to look at the stub (article?)? Deflagro 02:48, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
I'm honoured. BTW - I did a quick copyedit & fixed up the references & cites & added some bits. Hope you like it. - Alison 10:23, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! So is it ready to be put up? Also you're in the admin coaching project, right? Would you coach me? Deflagro 14:07, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
I reckon a little more detail wouldn't hurt, esp. things like birth dates and things which make the person notable. And unfortunately, no, I'm not an admin coach. I'm too much of a newbie admin myself :) - Alison 17:44, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
I couldn't find anything, but I will look again. Really? I thought you were on the list? Guess I'm going mad.... Anyway, I will look for more info, maybe using his real name and such. Deflagro 23:34, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Noticed your block change on the above. Good call - I was unaware of the Bess thing - Alison 19:21, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Now I'm sure that on this occasion this didn't happen (perish the thought!) but most articles in Who's Who or Debrett's Peerage tend to be total hagiographies written by the subject bereft of any negative information whatsoever. Smeggypants

Hi, though I'm in an edit war with this user, can you explain this username block? I may be missing an allusion here. I did a google search, though I wasn't a bit surprised to find this user on other forums, with the title "banned user" (he may have added it in jest though), but also to find out he's been in conflicts before - he clearly has a different opinion than I on matters (even in those forums), but it seems he's editting in good faith. 3rr warning

I purposely stopped reverting in spite of revert warring by Komdori and Lactose on that article. I have also participate in the talk page and am continuing to do so. However Komdori and Lactose have followed my edit and instigated revert wars as retaliation for our disagreements from a different article. They have partnered up and have been engaging in gamesmanship in the talk page instead of discussing the substantive topic of the article such as setting up a straw poll, claiming they have majority, etc.. There was a discussion going on but they've stopped responding and participating in the talk page and have started to revert again. Can you let me know how you became involved in this? Lightvessels in Ireland

The memory is not so bad because I remembered you are a member of the Irish Maritime WikiProject, so you might have some non-admin interest in this topic. After I disagreed with Frelke's merge tags on Lightvessels in Ireland and Lighthouses in Ireland there has been no response, by him or anyone else, for two months, so I removed the tags and added info on the lightvessels as mentioned in my oppose justification. However, what else do you think we can add to improve the article without violating copyright of the CII from this webpage? I also need to get some info on the last lightvessel that I believe was located at "South Rock" but was supposed to be withdrawn this year. Any pointers? Cheers & thanks. ww2censor 03:10, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi there. I'll try to take a look at it during the week. Hopefully, I'll get a bit on non-admin work done & maybe re-kickstart WP:IMAR again. BTW - I'll be back in Ireland in less than 4 weeks & hope to get some good maritime pics during that time - Alison 18:34, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Thanks. If I knew more I would get involved in the WP:IMAR but already have 2 projects I am involved in. I'll be back in Ireland, for good or just visiting? Can I come? I was there for 2 days in March and go a few good Martello tower photos that I have still to put up. I could do with more if you happen to see any. Where are you going to? ww2censor 03:39, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Help in Reporting an Editor

Greetings Alison.

I'm not sure exactly how to go about this but I would like to report an editor for unreasonable edit warring.

The editor in question is The Evil SpartanOver the last few weeks I have been spending a lot of time in good faith cleaning up the article Christianity_by_country

The The Evil Spartan was trying to include figures in the totals for the table that were not the summation of the table. I asked him if he could not do this but he continued to revert. I have taken him/her under good faith up until now. Tonight I spent a good few hours checking all the maths for the table and even found proper sources for most of the figures listed. I updated the page. Then another user User:Yom did some edits and I Improved Yom 's edits futher. I even, out of curtesy, informed The Evil Spartan of my work. I had even included some sources from the CIA factbook which was Evil Spartans wish.

Then to my horror I found The evil Spartan had stomped in and reverted not only all my hard wrork but that of the user Yom as well.

Sorry to burdon you with this, but I really feel this editor's approach with this page is unnacceptable. Can you please advise me how to report this editor properly. If this means contacting an adminstrator then please consider him reprted. Thankyou :) Smeggypants 23:45, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, which I told you was a mistake, my last reversion: [8] (not that you seem to care). I'll even tell you to report me: WP:ANI. And they will immediately tell you what this is: a content dispute, and they'll do nothing about it. The Evil Spartan 23:49, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Oh, and BTW, you were told to stop editing by the person who unblocked you until you could get another username, which you have completely ignored. The Evil Spartan 23:50, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Hi. Unfortunately, you've been abusing your unblock. I've re-blocked your account. You know what you need to do now as I've left a message on your talk page. When you get back, we'll deal with the above issue - Alison 00:01, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes, Sorry there Alison, I failed to see that I couldn't continue editing under the same name. I can see that message from Steve now on my page. I didn't "completely ignore" any requests as accused by the tone of Evil Spartan. As said I m happy not to edit under the name of smeggypants anymore. today was an oversight. Sorry again. :) 90.242.39.46 00:39, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
No problem at all. Just keep editing under you IP address, for the moment, or create a new account. Your username is the only thing that's blocked here, not you personally - Alison 01:00, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

For the re-block, his taking advantage of Australian sleep time! --Steve (Stephen) talk 00:17, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

What edits? 02:02, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi Alison I was told to contact you by Miranda. She is helping me with a criticism I am writing up for the fark.com entry. I expect it will be vandalized quite quickly. I think she was looking out for me. I have no idea what I am doing but it is good to know there are people who want to stick up for factual content even though it might annoy some people! Any criticisms you have to offer would be most appreciated! Rhonda Faethe 02:08, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Also Alison - I went ahead and edited the Shadowban page to reflect more sources. This was my entry in case it gets vandalized by tommorow:

The weird-news-aggregation community website Fark employs the practice; community backlash against this and other practices by administrators and/or moderators spawned the creation of a similar website called banniNation, which attempts to avoid such methods.

Another way to shadow ban someone is to use the Global ignore feature included with vBulletin community forum software. According to vBulletin's website, "This feature Global ignore user aka 'Tachy goes to Coventry' - when enabled all posts by the specified user will be ignored/unseen by other members. Automatically added to the all users ignore lists." [1] . vBulletin forum administrators use Global ignore to hide posts from disruptive users who may otherwise react publicly to being banned, or create legal issues for other users of the website. An example of this is found on The Admin Zone[2]. In response to a question concerning the moderation of a user creating legal issues for an animal care forum, an administrator posted "My 2 cents: Disable her account or put her on global ignore. To me the issue isn't this kid, but your community. Is this the best thing for your community letting her posts, her story, her odd status...take over your community that you spend so much time and effort keeping up and running and civil?"[3].

Discussions concerning the Global ignore feature in vBulletin go back as far as August of 2000[4]. The use of this feature was viewed as a way to alienate a user from the rest of the community by causing the least amount of disruption. In a forum post, vBullletin member Sharg states that “Global ingore is really great. Even if you want to keep your database out of trash wluke. Cause by time the ingored user will get sick of posting and being ignored by eveybody so he will simply leave the board then once he leave you can delete all his posts.”[5].

On WebmasterWorld[6] on January 3, 2006 a discussion thread was started concerning the Washington Post turning off comments during an ongoing discussion. Forum member HughMungus offered this advice on Global ignore:

...instead of deleting accounts or banning people, you trick the bad apples such that they think they can still post and they see their posts with everybody else's posts, but in fact they're the only ones who can see their posts.[7]

When applied to public forums, Global ignore is used as a tool to moderate discussions by 'shadowing' disruptive users. In the case of Fark, 'shadowbanning' has been used to mask contributory comments due to their content[8]. It has also been applied to members of the subscription service Totalfark without their knowledge[9]. This would appear to conflict with a members expectation of open participation in “TotalFark discussions,” which are submitted links not meant to be greenlighted, but rather commented on and discussed by TotalFark members only”. Copt page-protection

Hello Alison- You said that there was not enough recent activity to justify semi-protecting the article Copt at the moment. Could you tell me how to deal with the banned user who keeps coming back? He just vandalized Copt and Coptic flag again. So far, he's edited as 74.0.147.42 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log), Impartiallaw (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) and CopticFreedom (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). — Zerida 18:08, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

  • You're still very much at the revert-warn-report stage on this one. If he's persistent and is creating many socks to vandalise, you might want to take a look at WP:RFCU to have a checkuser done. I note that at least one of the editors above had never been warned about their behaviour - Alison 18:11, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. I filed the first CheckUser request myself, am I justified in filing another one if it continues? — Zerida 18:26, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

I have thought about bringing up the issue on his talk page, and so have other users. He is not Wikignoming and removing "uncited" and "irrelevant" text - a simple check of his talk page, and what he has actually edited and changed can see that!! Hell, he's even deleted ENTIRE ARTICLES and has been cited for it in the past.

It is obvious that this user is a vandal - a deaf/blind/mute could even see that!

A question

What does number of unique pages mean in my edit count?Thank you--Arnon Chaffin (Talk) 19:54, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

  • It's a count of how many unique pages you've touched. If you edited my talk page, say, 10 times, that's 10 edits but only one "unique" page edit - Alison 20:17, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Moles

Dear Clarice Allie: Congrats on catching User:Durovina. It's not as if he/she left any clues. Some of these moles just won't be whacked, eh. Heh.

Yours,

Btw: you fibbed about being a Catholic. You could have told me it was none of my business, which you could/should have done, but you insisted on denying it more than once. And then I go and see "Czech-Irish-Catholic-atheist-anime...". Sad, but not to worry I never believed you on that point, anyway (LOL). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.194.20.245 (talkcontribs) You need to work on your subtlety, Robert. It wasn't the best decision, however & I personally find it offensive (I'm bi). Hi, Noticed that you blocked User:Diepauldie for one day as a result of a WP:3RR violation. Was this because of the listing on WP:UAA? If it was, just curious about your opinion on the appropriateness of the username, and whether it violated WP:UN by promoting violence. Thanks, Leuko 05:23, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

It wasn't as a result of a WP:UAA listing. Hmmm .... I've seen worse usernames, though. Have you thought about WP:RFCN? - Alison 05:25, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, it's not the worst thing I've seen, but not necessarily appropriate either. I'll take it to WP:RFCN. Thanks, Leuko 05:29, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Brock Lesnar page protection.

Please reconsider your decline of it being unprotected and please take a closer look at it's purported justification for being totally protected. There is no justification as far as I can tell and the explanations given simply aren't occurring. There is no "continued" vandalizing by anyone. It was unprotected on the 7th of June and then re-protected the same day with the assertion that it was being vandalized. The purported vandalism were 2 edits made by anonymously IP's. The first one was copyrighted material (not vandalism) and the second one was fixing the format of the article (not vandalism). It was then subsequently re-protected with the assertion it was being vandalized.Wikidudeman (talk) 08:10, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

I'm saying that conclusions were jumped to after it was un-protected a few days ago. The two IP edits clearly weren't vandalism. The first was a copyright issue and the second wasn't anything but fixing of the format. If he comes to vandalize the page then we revert the vandalism and ban that account. We can't simply protect a page as a 'precautionary' measure against possible future vandalism. Wikidudeman (talk) 10:48, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

External Links Ireland.

Hello,

I have tried to include external links going to my website, but they have been removed a few minutes after. I was wondering if I didn't follow Wikipedia's regulations in doing so. If that is the case, may I know what Wikpedia's rules are?

Here is the external link that I wanted to add. If you read it, you will notice that I put Wikipedia in the references section.

http://www.studiodentaire.com/studio/en/ireland.php

Thank you.

Anto (cyberanto@hotmail.com)

It's been removed because the base page of the website is about dentistry not Ireland, and can be considered spam. --Dark Falls talk 04:50, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Yes, there is a lot of researched information about dental problems as well, written by a dentist. It is not a website made to sell anything online. So why is it considered like spam?

Thank you.

Anto. —Preceding unsigned comment added by cyberanto (talkcontribs)

  • Hi Anto. Unfortunately, Wikipedia is not just a collection of links and all you've done (under your IP address) is promote your own site by adding it into many Irish articles. This is called linkspamming and it's somewhat frowned upon. Also, the articles you added it to are already overloaded with links. WP:USER does say that warnings can be removed, since the user obviously read them. And, I never said it was "simple" vandalism. Plus, the IP's whitewashed his talkpage again, so is he on the blocking line now?--Rambutan (talk) 11:47, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

I actually know the dark side of caffeine, back when I worked overnight in radio. Question about promotion

Hi Alison - I'm one of the folks you've warned in the past about WP:3RR violations (lesson learned, read the full rules list and will endeavor to follow them as honestly as possible). Anyway, I noticed a weird article the other day on a random search; essentially a bio page that I wouldn't expect to see on Todd Baker. The person who created it, Special:Contributions/24.45.194.215 seems to have inserted the name Todd Baker into various articles (maybe 1/2 his edits?). One, on Cars (film), I deleted as it was an unsourced statement that seemed to backhandedly accuse Pixar/Disney of stealing from something Todd Baker produced - I did a quick search and could not find anything to support the statement before removing it.

So, after all that, I'm sure that you're wondering what the question is. My question is this; this seems to be someone actively promoting Todd Baker - is this allowed? If I run into statements such as the one I mentioned above, should I leave them alone, or change them if they seem inaccurate, unsourced, etc.? AleBrewer 07:36, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

Forgive me butting in, but based on a quick check of the IPs contributions, it seems pretty clear there's a conflict of interest. If sources can't be found for the Baker article (and IMDB isn't sufficient for notability), I'd recommend nominating it for deletion. One Night In Hackney303 08:02, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
To be fair, that's just my own opinion of IMDB. In my experience with it, a lot of people use it as an ego booster - folks submit their own bios, edit their own trivia and experience, etc. I've never really seen any oversight to it; obviously flat out wrong data is picked up (I've never seen something like a statement saying that Gary Olsen starred in V for Vendetta), but there's no verification required for tiny details (i.e. I could submit that I worked on x program in y position and chances are that it would be listed). Again, this is just my experience. AleBrewer 16:20, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
A check of Little Airplane Productions shows a Todd Baker under "Who we are". (This would be the company that created The Wonder Pets childrens show mentioned in Todd Baker). It's still looking like a COI vio, but the article itself might be salvageable. --Celain 21:27, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
Ah, good find. Indeed he is an associate producer there. It looks as though the anonymous user, Special:Contributions/24.45.194.215, took out that reference though, and removed the reference needed tags. I'd revert it, but I don't want to violate any of the rules about this sort of thing again. AleBrewer 16:03, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. No, I don't want to report. I think it was an oversight in the heat of the moment. I posted a note on the article's Talk page to warn him, but that apparently wasn't the correct protocol. Assistance please? User who can't tell the difference between "ref" and "reflist"

Hey Alison, I'm coming to you rather than getting into an edit war. User:Java7837 ([[11]]) has taken it upon him/herself to mass replace the template {{reflist}} template with <references/>, under the apparent believe that {{reflist}} is the same as the old {{ref}} template. Other editors besides myself have been less than pleased, have written on Java7837's talk page, to no avail. Most recently, this editor has edited his/her talk page to delete all the complaints and arguments -- see the diff here showing the complaints/arguments before this happened.

Java7837 furthermore has a good buddy, Moeron, who best I can tell is Java's sockpuppet. Evidence: Moeron left a comment on my talk page which was hand signed as being from moe.RON (i.e., without using the full tildes), but the edit history of my talk page shows that the comment was actually used made by Java -- see diff here. I am doing more research on this towards possibly reporting this sockpuppetry, but in the meantime it would be nice if the mass edit of the {{reflist}} template could be halted.

Thanks for any help/suggestions you can provide. --Yksin 23:05, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi there, Yksin. I've just weighed in on their talk page, as has Chris. They seem to have stopped for the moment, thank goodness, and a number of others have reverted the damage - Alison 00:00, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, Alison. It really helped having not just one but two admins trying to talk sense to this person. Meanwhile s/he's just made a minor personal attack to me on my talk page for my apparent error in thinking that s/he & Moeron were sockpuppets of one another. [sigh] --Yksin
I just checked Java's more recent contributions -- excellent idea telling him/her about that tool, because Java's off doing some truly helpful WikiGnome work now, which I appreciate very much, & I'm sure other editors will as well. --Yksin 00:29, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Protection conflict at Technical analysis

Hello Alison. Looks like today it was my turn to protect an article at the same time you declined protection. Sorry for the conflict. :-) Anyway, I decided to protect this one as there were a few IPs in war with the user who had requested protection. Although he should bring his disagreements to the talk page, I thought protection could help since he's dealing with multiple unregistered users who are likely the same person. Feel free to unprotect if you disagree. Best regards, Húsönd 01:50, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Admin question

Hey Allison, I noticed you were on. Can you help with an admin question? I was uploading pictures I took of vine leaves and had a total brainfart when I uploaded Image:Cab Franc leaves.JPG. It is actually Petit Verdot. I didn't see a link where I could do a "page move" like with an article. What would you recomend I do to get the right title for the image? AgneCheese/Wine 05:34, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

  • You can't, really, and nor can I :) Want me to delete it so you can re-upload? - Alison 05:39, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, that would be great. Do I need to add a tag or anything? AgneCheese/Wine 05:41, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Done :-) You can also tag it {{db-owner}} and it will go into the speedy list and any admin can delete it - Alison 05:43, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks again! AgneCheese/Wine 05:46, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Deco Da Man

Hey Alison, here I am bugging you again. Could you take a look, when you get a chance, at Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Deco Da Man & also User talk:Deco Da Man? This is a 13-year-old kid I had a little issue with a couple days ago over his erroneous application of a speedy delete tag to an article I work on; all was settled amicably, he's just a smart kid who is still learning that editing on Wikipedia entails certain reponsibilities. And so he & a couple of pals were messing around, experimenting, including one of his pals blanking Jimbo Wales' talk page; & in consequence he was indef blocked & Deco Da Man in term as a suspected sock puppet. But all of this on the basis of few edits, very few warnings, & not enough warnings (no final or only warning) to even warrant either kid being reported to WP:AIV. Admin response to them seemed unduly harsh & counter to normal WP policies with graduated warning levels etc. That's my view of it anyway; thought it might be good to have an actual admin take a look. --Yksin 09:37, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Oh gee just saw you were sick. Hope you feel better soon. Don't worry overmuch about this then since you're unwell; I'm advocating for this kid (while at the same time giving him some stern parental-type advice), & this will probably resolve itself with cooler admin heads in the morning. Have some chicken soup, on me. --Yksin 09:41, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks, Yksin. I'll live, but I'm seriously non-functional right now. I left a holding message on the talk page this morning as the user has the {{unblock}} template up and that should delay any declines for the moment. I'll investigate in a few hours here - when I get on my feet :) - and see what I can do. Thanks for looking out for newbies here :) - Alison 14:40, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Thanks Alison. I did a lot of research on this kid's edit history & real-life background a coupla days ago because I wanted to make sure he wasn't a sock of a single-purpose editor who has three times blanked an article I've worked a lot on (Tom Anderson (politician), a former Alaska legislator who's about to go on trial on federal corruption charges) -- history on Deco's talk page above all the sockpuppet case. It all came out okay, but as a result, I knew this was just an explorative 13 year old kid who explores in kid ways, taking more time to learn the geek end of things than the policy end of things. The 19-year-old kid who lives with us (my partner's nephew, been with us since he was 9) might've done just the same things at 13 if he'd been a geek with a computer. Instead he got in trouble for being in the company of a friend who got caught shoplifting -- but our kid's a good kid, & so is this one. Just needs to be taken under the wing a bit. Not to have the book thrown at him, & then to be squashed under it. Thanks for any help you can give, especially given how you're feeling right now. --Yksin 16:37, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
      • Situation resolved: MaxSem decided to give him another chance, & unblocked him. I'll continue keeping an eye on him... sort of an adopted WikiNephew or something, I guess. Meanwhile, you just lay low, & get yourself all better. --Yksin 21:55, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Talk Page protection

I'm not sure if you saw the previous diff of my talk page - When my userpage was blanked and i went to RFPP, you semi-protected it. When my talk page was blanked, you refused? I don't get your reasoning. --tennisman 14:34, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

  • WP:PROT calls for protection of userpages on request. Well, some admins interpret it that way. I do :) Talk pages are almost never protected, semi or otherwise, unless there's severe (and I mean really severe) disruption, as is inhibits communication with the user. We've had vandalism on talk pages at a rate of many times a minute. Now that can warrant semi-protection. There's a big difference between user and talk pages. Sorry :( - Alison 14:38, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Okay, I get it. No problem then. I wasn't really sure of protection policy in that form, not being an admin. Wish I was though :-P Wouldn't have to deal with AIV, page deletion, RPP, or any of the like. Oh well. --tennisman 14:44, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
  • It's all part of dealing with vandalism, I'm afraid. Have a read of WP:RBI - you're obviously doing an excellent job to be attracting attention. It's a badge of honour! - Alison 14:48, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
  • I actually have that on my userpage: "You know you're doing something right if your userpage (or talk page) gets vandalized", with links to the diffs. But for some reason my TwinkleWarn isn't working... --tennisman 14:53, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Yayy!! Badge of honour. You really know you've arrived however, when you get a BitchStar :=) - Alison 15:21, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
  • On that subject, can you unprotect my talk page please? I'm sure the JB196 sockshow will start again straight away, but it's worth a try. Thanks. One Night In Hackney303 15:35, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
  •  Done :) - to Tennisman. Now, there's a classic example of protection on a talk page. Hackney was getting deluged by sock-vandals many times per minute. Take a look at the page's edit history - Alison 15:39, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

That's certainly possible, but he had his user page deleted, and added the edit summary "Out of nostalgia I return to the first page I edited and from which I took my name. DrKiernan R. I. P." Since it appears he's left the project, even if temporarily, I see no reason to leave it open. Feel free, however, to revert if you think it prudent. Ral315 » 03:50, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Bureaucracy and user Wanad

Hi Alison
I noticed that you blocked user Wanad (talk), for breaking the three revert rule on the article Bureaucracy (Talk/history). I have reverted some vandalism on Bureaucracy for some time now, all with the same modus operandi as Wanad made solely from IPs registered to the University of Guelph. That resulted in the article being soft protected. Right after the article was protected the account Wanad was created, and made vandalism in exactly the same manner as that of the IPs.
I suggest that

  • User:Wanad is given a checkuser to see if its macth the University of Guelph.
  • User:wanad is blocked indef.
  • 131.104.218.90 to 131.104.218.130 (University of Guelph) used solely for vandalism, is banned from account creation and anonym editing.

Can you tell me where to report this user/IP sockpuppet.
Best regards and happy editing Mads Angelbo Talk / Contribs 21:51, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

Quick request for a protected page.

Sorry to hear my favorite admin is feeling sick. Hope you feel better soon. I have a rather mundane task I need help with. The article Deir Yassin massacre has been fully protected. I don't need it unprotected, but there is a Wikify tag about 2/3 of the way down; the article needs many things, but it is adequately wikified. This is one of the last articles in the Nov 2006 Wikify category; if I could just get someone to remove the tag from the article, we can clear the month, which would be a great thing at the Wikify project. Thanks again, in advance, for your help with this. You are always such a great help! --Jayron32|talk|contribs 04:16, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Well, you're not in my shoes & I don't respond very well to attempts at intimidation. Your well-earned block stays. Furthermore, if you keep up that behaviour, you'll just end up getting another, longer one. BTW - I'm really sorry your multiple accounts also got caught in the autoblock. Accuracy in Reporting (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) made some edits I (mostly) reverted as a pretty obvious sockpuppet, then 216.194.3.81 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) entered the fray. Hey Alison, in hopes you're feeling better now -- I see you did poke your head up yesterday, anyway. If you are feeling better...

...well, this case is unresolved again. The admin who blocked Deco Da Man (talk · contribs) the first time Ryulong (talk · contribs) has blocked him a second time, this time on the basis (of maybe 30 edits) that Deco Da Man hasn't made any edits outside his user space & is supposedly using Wikipedia as a social networking site. I think it's rather that Ryulong has taken a person dislike to this kid, or something -- there's no other explanation I can summon up for a second incidence of the harshest sanction being made on the basis of few edits, no warnings, & an apparent forgetting of standard WP behaviors like WP:Assume good faith & WP:BITE. I've also asked MaxSem (talk · contribs) to take a look -- he's the admin who unblocked him the first time.

I think this is a matter not just of needing to make sure Deco Da Man keeps his nose clean, but also perhaps of reining in an admin who's throwing the book a little bit too hard. If you can take a look, thanks. If not... I understand you're still unwell. --Yksin 17:50, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Alison. Please see Deco Da Man's talk page; would my proposal work for you, assuming that he accepts it, and Ryulong as well? (Deco Da Man's in Australia, so time zone issues might mean some time before he will respond). Thanks. --Yksin 22:54, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes. That's just fine, IMO. Deco needs to agree to all this, though and right now, he's in Last Chanceville. If you could mentor him, that would be really great. Your patience knows no bounds :) - Alison 22:57, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the semi-protect, though I have a sneaky suspicion that the vandal will create an account. Oops..better not say too much or WP:BEAN... Cheers :) Dark Falls talk 08:54, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Based on events since your message, it seems like you're one of the more patient, tolerant admins! One Night In Hackney303 09:27, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Certainly more patient that User:Ryulong - hurrah! ;) Pic's gone, too - Alison 09:28, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
Not quite. One Night In Hackney303 09:30, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Hmmm - User:Zscout370 deleted it from Commons for licensing issues. Yayy! - Alison 09:34, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
"licensing issues" - or in plain English "get that vanity picture that serves no useful purpose off the servers". One Night In Hackney303 09:37, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
His vanity campaign is that bad he somehow ended up in the original version of the Matthew Bellamy article on the Lithuanian (??) Wikipedia, which I fixed as well naturally. One Night In Hackney303 10:09, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Protecting userpage

Thanks for that - I can't imagine why they picked me!--Rambutan (talk) 10:00, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

  • No problem :) Your reputation as a vandal / POV fighter obviously precedes you. If you want to have that protection applied indefinitely, just let me know. Nobody should have to put up with that kind of nonsense - Alison 10:03, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

I suppose there's no reason to have it taken off, on the other hand, other users have occasionally updated templates and so on. Maybe try semi-protection after a few days, or is that against WP:SEMI? Thanks,--Rambutan (talk) 10:19, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

There is someone in the 69.0.0.0 IP range going around blanking user and user talk pages from (mainly) admins for a few days already. After block, they just switch their IP. Semi-protection seems the best solution (mine is semi-protected). Fram 10:25, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, Fram, one just did my talkpage (the only unprotected bit of me!). I think someone said they're all AT&T IPs, but I couldn't swear to it. UPDATE: Here is the AT&T comment.--Rambutan (talk) 10:27, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
I agree with that message, I also don't warn anymore but give straight blocks. It doesn't stop him, but it sure makes it a bit harder. Fram 10:30, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
I'm blocking them on sight now for 24 hours. Their modus operandi is quite clear. Indeed, this page got hit twice in the last 30 minutes. - Alison 08:37, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Rambutan, I extended your userpage prot to indefinite, esp given that you're going on wikibreak soon - Alison 08:37, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Committed Identity question

Alison, quick question about the "Committed Identity" thing. If I should, because of the unstableness of my mental situation, happen to be committed, will I have to create a special committed identity? (Yes, this is supposed to bring a smile to a sick Dub...)

Seriously though, is the hash thing for committed identity recommended for everyone, or just admins and above? I've been on Wikipedia for a few months, and I'm starting to really get into it! I also have a digital ID certificate. Should that be mentioned, or because it uses real-life identity, probably not? Just wondering! Thanks - NDCompuGeek 10:36, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

Baccara

About our discussion with User:Dreamer.se... Well, we're not against changes and improvements to any article. But do you consider more than 20 changes in one single day healthy to the article? At first, we didn't revert his changes because they were, indeed, good ideas. But when he added an "extended version" of the single "Sleepy-Time-Toy", we did revert it because that "extended version" does not even exist. When reverting, we did give him a good reason, but he just didn't care and kept on modifying the article with something that is not true. At the article's history page we told him: <<There's no such thing as an "extended version" of "Sleepy-Time-Toy". The difference between 7" and 12" was the sound quality.>> Don't you think this was a good reason to revert this modification? And next, he added a table with some chart positions (copied from the German Wikipedia) that is not verifiable. As we understand, Wikipedia's articles must contain facts, not gossip. Once again, we thank any positive contribution... But don't you think any major changes should be first discussed in the article's appropriate page? User:Oaobregon

Question

I noticed right beneath the Mark Kim comment you banned a user not for his incivility but because he saw nothing wrong with it. That is the exact problem with Mark Kim. Not only has been repeatedly uncivil over the last 2 years, nor does he see anything wrong with it, he thinks its the right thing to do over and over to "protect" articles or get his way in them. I intend to open an RfC on the user (but expect it will be dismissed by him like everything else) but I would appreciate some additional feedback here. From my point of view this looks like an issue which has just gone on too long and needs to be addressed.--Crossmr 20:21, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

I've actually created an RFC to get some formal input on this. Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Mark_Kim If you'd like to give any input.--Crossmr 04:14, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Slow-motion edit wars?

I'm not sufficiently familiar with the :en rules for things, but you declined my request for semi-protection of Mike Bickle with the explanation that there was not enough recent activity to justify semi-protection. My impression is that I check in here every few days or weeks, and each time I do, an IP has deleted the reference to funding and the Joseph Company. Then I add it back. Other than IPs and me, no one much seems to be watching the page. Since I probably live in a different time zone than the IPs, we don't end up in a "heated" edit war, since it stays in my/their version for several hours or even days until one side or the other checks back. We trade a few edit commentaries with each other, but these do not always address the points the other side is making. Can you suggest another way of settling this dispute? Using talk pages of changing IPs to directly enter dialog does not seem like a feasible solution--my hope was that by semi-protecting the article, the IPs would be motivated to register and be more easily engaged in a discussion. Is there a minimum frequency of edits required to justify semi-protection?--Bhuck 07:47, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Unfair delting

Before you delete an article you should alway inform the last editor. Otherwise you are being rude and breaking wiki rules. I may have to have you blocked if you continue. Now please provide a good reason why you delted the PS-wiibox article as it said nothing but truth, meets the rules for notabilty. The only thing you had any right to do was mark it as a stub. If you continue like this I will make sure you are blocked from wikipedia. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by RabisaE (talkcontribs) 08:53, 21 June 2007.

Well, here's the reason; your article, Ps-wiibox, is not encyclopedic. It's wild speculation at best or patent nonsense at worst. See WP:CRYSTAL to understand why. Note that you were already speedy-warned for creating that article, it was deleted by another admin, yet you immediately went ahead and created it again. Whereupon I deleted it again as indeed, I may per WP:CSD#G1, "where administrators may delete Wikipedia pages or media on sight without further debate". If you wish to contest this, you can bring the matter through the deletion review process. You can also report me to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents so I can be blocked. Thanks - Alison 08:33, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you for all you have done, and giving me a chance. I would like to say that the reasons I am interested in wikipedia are:

  • The project itself is a good great idea and I would like to contribute.
  • I would like to share my ideas, I am still not sure if this is the right place to do it but I am trying to do it without doing to wrong thing.
  • MediaWiki has interested me for a while, I discovered it when I was looking around wikipedia. I am trying to make a broswer and WYSIWYG editor for it. Is this okay? or should I be doing this at the MediaWiki site? Please see User:Deco_Da_Man.

Thank you once again :D

Thanks very much for wishing me happy birthday! I had a great day - well, it could have been better, I spent all day studying for an exam! • Thanks Allie. Everything has already been told there. I liked the way I interacted with him, even when that was negative, and I'll miss him. I'm more pissed because of the way he left, and I am in the position to understand why I imagine he did the right thing. Some things are not worth the one-in-a-billion risk. I sympathize... NikoSilver 23:25, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
      • Niko, to be honest, I still feel like leaving the project - at least temporarily - over the whole mess. I really feel sorry for the guy & the reasons why people need to remain private here have never been clearer now. And the response from Those Above has been less than stellar - Alison 23:54, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Thank you kindly, Alison, for taking care of vandalism when I didn't know where to turn. Jim.henderson 18:18, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

  • No problem at all. It's not so much the vandalism, but that it contains serious allegations and personal attacks against certain members of the community there. That can lead into defamation and legal issues for WP. Thank you for being diligent and reporting it - Alison 18:32, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome

Much appreciated, that info looks really helpful for a newbie.

locking a page

I am unexperienced at wikipedia and I was wondering: is it possible to lock a page like a video game page on the count that a big gaming conference (E3) is coming up?Sasst82 19:44, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Yes, you can request an administrator to either fully protect or semi-protect a page by requesting it at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. It's a good idea to read the protection policy first, and note that we don't generally pre-emptively protect pages - Alison 20:15, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Also if one person is denied does that mean another, trying to lock the same article, person cannot try? Sasst82 20:21, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
Well, it can be requested more than once, by more than one person. However, asking repeatedly won't get it protected unless the article has deteriorated in the meantime. Page protection is kinda really a last resort as we (or at least, I) don't like locking out any editors from participating, be they anonymous or registered editors. - Alison 20:27, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
thanks. Sasst82 20:29, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Hey there

Hi there Alison! I dropped your name here and here. I hope it's OK, and I figured as much, but if not, would you be so kind as to refer her to another Wikipedian who is a bit more active than I, but a bit less busy than you? Maybe a little longer

I recently reported User:=CJK= because of his actions. If you look at my report, he's been doing this all day long, after 2 warnings by 2 different editors for the Hannibal Lecter article, and then again for the article reverts that you blocked him for. I think "a short time" might not be enough for this editor.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 22:37, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi there. We'll have to see where this goes. He's been given what I'd consider a standard 24-hour block for 3RR violation (not to mention the rampant incivility and refusal to work with others, warning blanking, etc, etc). He's got a clean block record to-date. There's the possibility that, having been blocked, he may reform but if it's business as usual when he returns, he'll just get quickly blocked for longer until the inevitable occurs - Alison 22:54, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Ok. It only said "editing for a short time", instead of giving a time. I didn't know if that meant like for an hour or what.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 22:57, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
      • Oh, right. The boilerplate block message doesn't really make that clear. If you click on his contributions, then 'block log', you'll see the duration ... - Alison 23:02, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
        • I also wonder if his name can't technically be considered a violation, considering the difficultly with linking to his edit history, though I suppose he wouldn't be here anymore if that were the case... HalfShadow 23:08, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
          • Well, the username meets the username policy, far as I can see. It's just a little funny and the "=" gets escaped in URLs. - Alison 23:11, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
        • Gotcha. I always forget about that, probably because it's just a small link at the top. I'll have to remember that for the future.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 23:09, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

When I put that 3RR report in, just before you blocked him, the area where you put the users name (that lists his history, contribs, etc) would show up "Example user" because of the "=" signs around his name.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 23:14, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Whereabouts is that? I've seen something similar in the past and I know there's a workaround for it. Maybe mention it on Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names but it's starting to look like you're out to get him (whether you are or not!) - Alison 23:16, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Well, I put in a request for comment about it because I wasn't aware there was a template to correct it. Should I remove that or let others discuss the issue.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 23:26, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

  • That should be fine. See what the community has to say ... - Alison 23:55, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Ok. I used that template that HalfShadow brought here, because if I used the one they want to use on the request for comments page, his name turns everything into one giant header, and he still shows up as "Example". lol.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 23:58, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Alison

Regarding Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Pam55 I have E-mail exchanges and chats with Behmod, other Iranina users and VoA. I have reasons to believe that Behmod and Pam55 are different students of the same department of the same University (I can provide additional info by E-mail if needed). In the worst case they are only guilty in mild meatpuppeting. I decided to unblock both of them and have given them warnings about meatpuppeting. Alex Bakharev 04:33, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, Alex. As the blocking admin, I don't mind which way you go on this one. I was just following through per request, and per checkuser. I've left some more detail on the checkuser page above.
Thanks for getting in touch - Alison 04:39, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

User:Bonklet

Why did you block Bonklet (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) for only 24 hours? All the account's contributions are vandalism, including vandalism to sprotected pages, so the account should be blocked indefinitely unless there's been a policy change I'm not aware of. szyslak 05:25, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Where's the policy which points out where an editor should be indefblocked with one warning on their talk page? Call me naïve, by all means, but I'd rather not indefblock for silly vandalism like that without giving them some chance of reform. It has happened in the past. There's an editor on this page who's been indef'd twice now and is a reformed contributor. I generally only indef if they're blatant-blatant, or a returning troll or a banned editor like RMS or JB196 ... - Alison 05:38, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
From WP:BLOCK: "While the duration of a block should vary with the circumstances, there are some broad standards: (...) accounts used primarily for disruption are blocked indefinitely". Indefblocking vandal-only accounts has been common practice for years. When such a user wants to make useful contributions, they can create another account. Additionally, Bonklet is clearly a "sleeper account", which was used for the express purpose of vandalizing semi-protected pages like Feces and Sex. szyslak 06:40, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Right. Now define "primarily", because that's the sticking point. Indefblocking vandal-only accounts certainly has been practise, providing they're defined as "vandal-only". I'm not playing silly semantics here; if they're vandal-only, they get indef'd. Remember also from WP:BLOCK; "Administrators are never obliged to place a block and are free to investigate the situation themselves", "A rule of thumb is when in doubt, do not block" and note that blocking is only to prevent disruption and is not a punitive measure. - Alison 06:45, 22 June 2007 (UTC) (hope you like your userpage. I accepted your open invite and tidied a bit!)
Note also that indefblocking is a serious matter; you are permanently revoking an editor's privileges to edit Wikipedia. That's not something to do lightly. BTW, here's my block log. You'll find quite a few indefinites in there. It's not something I take pleasure in doing but, unfortunately, it is necessary betimes and I do it anyway - Alison 06:48, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
BTW, now this is a classic example of a vandalism-only account that will (and did! - thanks, Riana) immediately get indefinitely blocked - Alison 08:22, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Mmm. Idiot... Riana (talk) 08:25, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Well, Bonklet's vandalism was relatively minor for an account with no non-vandalous contributions. On retrospect, it's perfectly safe to just watch what the user does if s/he returns. I strongly agree that blocks are not a punitive measure, by the way. szyslak 12:24, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Hey Alison,

Sorry for the quick email. I am emailing you, regarding the case of Behmod/Pam55. Right now I am in the vacation in Toronto and I hardly have access to Internet and it is difficult for me to follow up the situation. I understand that I am suspected to be User:Behmod. I am strongly request to review this case again. Should not you be convinced, I am ready to provide you my phone number and Student ID. Also, I would appreciate it if you could unblock me again or at least tell me: how I can unblock myself?

I am doing this communication since Behmod contacted me several times. I will be back home on Sunday evening. Should you need to emergently contact me before Sunday, you can do it via Behmod.

Thanks,

Pam

  • Pam - I know there was a checkuser done here and am aware that you are evading your block to have posted this here. As the blocking admin, I'm going to review this again and get back to you. I'll look into this some time today. Behmod has already been unblocked - Alison 22:29, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Ok - it's been cleared with User:Alex Bakharev that you and Behmod are different people but have been engaged in meat-puppetry, which is not allowed. You have now been unblocked, so you're free to edit again. Let me know if you need any more help on this, but you should be okay now - Alison 22:32, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Coding question

Allie, a silly little coding question, but I'd like to know for future ref, and am working on something at the moment. Which is WP's preferred coding for the reference section, is it (1).<div class="references-small"><references /></div>, or is (2).{{reflist}} the preferred option? To make things easier, just refer to 1 or 2. Thanks/i/a;- Gold♥ 19:36, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi Goldheart! Nice to see you back on. To answer, I always use {{Reflist}} instead of references-small, for a number of reasons. 1) it's tidier, 2) It's clearer to newbie editors that follow along that "this is where the references end up" 3) you can make it 2-columns later with a simple |2 option. Also, as its not transcluded, we can make global changes to how small reference lists work with one file change. It's all good :). Furthermore, {{sourcesstart}} and {{sourcesend}} complement it perfectly when adding footnotes and cites that are not embedded references. Check them out! - Alison 22:02, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks Allie, that's interesting as I'm half-baked in a couple of languages. I like the global use. Always wondered about that;- Gold♥ 22:11, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Your page moves so quickly, I better squeeze this in before the topic disappears. Thanks for the bon voyage, wasn't I the happy one being away from all that! Just getting back about this coding. I have experimented with {{reflist|2}}, and absolutely nothing happened. It might suit a page I'm working, that's if it works. Quarter-baked, more apt, got a bit carried away ;), off for a nap.Gold♥ 02:26, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Oh, this nearly got lost! Glad you're back :) Watch out for Reflist|2 because there's one thing about it - it doesn't do the 2-col thing in all browsers, due to the way the markup works. It doesn't work in mine (Safari), for example. But others will see it correctly. I'll be back in Ireland on Sunday - can't wait to see rain again! - Alison 05:09, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Allie, by way of adjunct. If you get talking to ON, say to keep up the good work, and big support here. I have witnessed past editing and it is indeed of an excellent caliber. WP is going to be a lesser place if that happens, in the mean-time, the quiet life;) Gold♥ 12:34, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Who is this ColScott character anyway?

Reading about this ColScott character, I'd like to know a little more about him in case he starts socking. I'm also wondering--should he be listed on WP:LOBU anyway? Nobody will ever unblock him after this. Blueboy96 21:30, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

User:ColScott has a long history here. He's actually Don Murphy and his blocking case is highly controversial and has been for some time. Long story .... - Alison 22:07, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Well, hopefully someone will speedy keep his article--clearly, the objections are in bad faith.Blueboy96 22:27, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Yes. Feel free to weigh in. The article is encyclopedic, even though the guy himself is obnoxious, IMO - Alison 22:30, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Already have ... this was such a blatant case of bad faith that it seems the only reason it's still open is because of the Sturm und Drang surrounding H's departure. Blueboy96 22:44, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Eternal RfC

Alison, this RfC I'm going through is well into it's second week now. How long more? Does it end? How? By whom? Some editors appear to have been given carte blanche to say just about anything they like about me, day after day; and any even remotely assertive response by me gets cited as "more evidence". I am close to losing the cool completely here, which I realise is probably the plan. The views of he RfC are splitting down the middle along fairly predictable lines. Time to call a halt; or at least enforce some civility on my attackers (the irony). Regards (Sarah777 22:07, 22 June 2007 (UTC))

  • Lemme take a look. I'm kinda busy here right now but promise to take a look sometime today. Day-job is killing me :) - Alison 22:11, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
    • That's fine Alison. I really want this to end. I made an offer to be "guided" by an Admin, Swatjester (whom I didn't consult!) - but it is drawing no reaction at all. Regards (Sarah777 22:41, 22 June 2007 (UTC))

Turkish language

Hi, Turkish language is on the Today's Featured Article, it doesn't appear to have vandalism any more intense than any other Main Page TFA. Can it be unprotected? --Iamunknown 22:56, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Gahh!! I should have checked that. Unprotected now (Please don't tell DrKiernan !! :) ) - Alison 23:00, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Unblock

Well, I can't say I blame you. However, did you actually look at my arguments as I was "edit warring"? Did you look at what I was editing? No: You didn't. And therefore, anybody can do whatever they want which leads to crazy people like me getting frustrated. --=CJK= 02:08, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Well, yes I did - however, that doesn't detract from the fact that you were edit-warring and being abusive. Either way, it's over now. Back to editing - Alison 02:12, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Oh come now. I was deleting what was basically pornography from the Kim Possible (character) page, and the next thing I knew I couldn't edit anymore. The people who know the rules and how to contact you people always win I guess. Can I get blocked at random now if someone is pissed at me? --=CJK= 02:15, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
  • You were edit-warring on a number of articles. How and ever; no, you can't get blocked at random if someone is pissed at you. Same rules apply as before and your previous block is already history. At this point, it is probably the best thing to go study the rules so you know them too :) - Alison 02:19, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

I already admmitted that I made a mistake on the Hannibal Lecter article. You didn't answer my question, though, which indicates to me that you really didn't check to see (A) what was being edited or (B) what my arguments were. One minute I was deleting porn, the next minute I couldn't edit. --=CJK= 02:22, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Yes, I did look. Second time answered. And no, you were not deleting porn. BTW, read WP:CENSOR. Are we done now? - Alison 02:23, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Hmmm. "are we done now"? I thought you might calm my fears but I guess you're just a jerk with lots of power. --=CJK= 02:31, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Well, yeah, just like all admins - duh! That's why they become administrators - they have no power in real life, and this is a fantasy world where they can roleplay, pretending to be important and doing important work, being respected by their admin peers, and wielding power to make up for all the wedgies and swirlies they received from bullies at school. Bullies, I salute you! 70.49.243.10 14:15, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Then, a day later I come to talk to you about it and you say "are we done now" as though you have some important wikipedia business to attend to. Try to be sociable, Alison. --=CJK= 02:38, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

  • You were plenty warned. Your page was strewn with warnings, in fact, from various editors. You were then reported & that was where I came in. You really should read up on policies here. BTW, I have tons of stuff to do. I just had some teenage girl's phone number permanently removed from an article's history & now I'm making some changes to articles on nuclear incidents. Advice please

Hello Alison, you have been very helpful in the past, and I was hoping your could lend some advice and suggestions of a page I’m working on [13]. (that title probably sent a shiver down the spine) An editor is being disruptive and has a serious POV issue, (that is just my opinion). I was hoping you could have a look. Regards --Domer48 19:05, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

[14]Started her [15] This is were its at.

Alison, I'm curious about your role here as an admin. Clearly the above is incivil and insulting, especially the accusation that I am "disruptive" and have a "serious POV issue". Many admins would issue warnings for this. In addition, Domer48 has in edit comment lines on that article accused me of "bad faith edits". In response I have been patient and repeatedly asked for factual support for his arguments, something that has been rejected. Is this something you are not going to challenge - I note you are also requesting of Tyrenius that he justify his warnings to me and Gold. What is your position on this? Thanks. MarkThomas 20:57, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Mark, calm down please and assume some good faith on my part here. Tyrenius issued a final warn to Goldheart without any previous warns being evident. I've been requested to look into this and am only starting here. I haven't even begun to check into what Domer48 is referring to above. - Alison 21:04, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Note also that Domer48 stating that you are "being disruptive" and have a "serious POV issue" in their opinion can't really be construed as a personal attack; just their (as yet unsubstantiated) opinion - Alison 21:08, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Quick Question (I hope)

Sorry to bother you, I asked another admin (diff here), but the example I used from ANI might be removed soon, and I really want to know if it's ok to post in more than one place when I strongly suspect a sock account of being used to avoid a block. R. Baley 21:30, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Ummm. It's kinda good to keep the discussion in one place all right. However, you might also want to check out WP:SSP if you strongly feel that sockery is involved. That way, other neutral members of the community can evaluate and comment - Alison 22:52, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Thanks, I think from what I've read at various places is, that it's probably ok to report in more than one place, but that once an admin has noticed, or a discussion starts, report that at the other noticeboard (or SSP) so that everybody knows what is going on (and nobody is caught off guard). Thanks again, R. Baley 23:16, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

The great Genocide and all that

Alison, Need you to take a peek here; I have been striving to remain civil all around but have encountered what I consider OTT behaviour from User:Tyrenius. He threatened a block (on me) stating that the word "genocide" cannot be used in a discussion debating claims that he famine was genocide! Could you please have a word with him?

Block threat: Please see WP:TPG: Article talk pages should not be used by editors as platforms for their personal views. (emphasis as in the original) If you contravene this, you will be blocked. If there is any matter to be included, then it must be because it is the view of a verifiable secondary source, not because it is your view. Tyrenius 20:58, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Reply: Tyrenius, the debate is over whether the word "genocide" has any place in an article about the Famine. (At least that is one of the interlocking debates going on here). You said "The word 'genocide' shouldn't even be mentioned, unless a secondary source has specifically used it in the context of this famine." I disagree; and I strongly object to you apparent assertion that it can't be even mentioned in the talkpage without threat of blocking. Secondary sources have been provided. I politely ask to withdraw you block threat and apologise for having issued it. Regards(Sarah777 22:04, 24 June 2007 (UTC))

(Sarah777 22:31, 24 June 2007 (UTC))

  • Sarah, I'm really sorry but I'm going to have to be excused from this one, I think. I've already edited the article and the talk page so I've a distinct conflict of interests there. Furthermore, myself and Tyrenius had a ... ummm .... discussion over the Hackney blocking incident only this week. Also, I have my own bias over the 'genocide' issue and recall commenting to you two weeks back about the "gorta mór" translation. Note above that User:MarkThomas has questioned my role in all this as an admin. Can I possibly ask any of the other neutral admins watching here to possibly step in and take a look here? - Alison 22:49, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
(edit conflict) :( This just happened earlier today, see up Alison's talk page. And it happened earlier this week, see the history of User talk:One Night In Hackney. What is going on here? I am concerned that good editors (you, Gold_heart, MarkThomas, ONiH) are being run off by Tyrenius... --Iamunknown 22:51, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
I honestly don't know. I'm concerned at the handing out of final block warns to a number of people without a whole lot of evidence nor prior warns. I'm guessing Tyrenius is trying to defuse an escalating situation on Talk:Great Irish Famine. We'll have to see what his response is - Alison 23:04, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
I won't be running anywhere! But if there are concerns about Tyrenius; where do we take them? I'm still totally unclear about what happened to ONiH; I had my own troubles at the time and next he was gone! Zap! User: Iamunknown; if you have the history of what happened, could you post it on my talkpage? Regards (Sarah777 23:07, 24 June 2007 (UTC))
If you have serious concerns about actions of an administrator (and that includes me), you can file a report at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents but note that you really need to have your homework done first & be able to provide diffs, etc, to support your rationale - Alison 23:10, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Sarah, I'll post something later tonight. In the meantime, don't do anything rash, plz?  :) --Iamunknown 23:15, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

@Ali: I don't reckon I'd go that far unless he actually blocked me. But in the "genocide" debate he managed to threaten to block three editors in a short period of time. Two for arguable incivility (very arguable) and one completely inappropriate threat to me based on an intellectual disagreement. All the best!
@Unknown - me? rash?!!! Nope; I'm a slow learner admittedly, but I have realised that to survive here you best learn the rules and the politics. I wasn't giving that aspect due care and attention till now! (Sarah777 23:22, 24 June 2007 (UTC))
me? rash?!!! - :P --Iamunknown 23:23, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi Alison, first of all, in response to Iamunknown's points about Tyrenius above, I wasn't offended by Tyrenius asking me and Gold to desist and I think he was actually trying to calm things down and do a good job on the article.

I have just checked and can't find the place Sarah777 refers to where she was threatened with a block. What does seem to be happening on the talk page of Great Irish Famine is that Tyrenius asked Sarah777 and Domer48 to come up with factual references to support their use of the phrase "genocide". Instead of doing so, Sarah777 came here to remonstrate against Tyrenius and (apparently) attempt to gain your support as an admin in a content dispute.

In addition, Tyrenius has correctly pointed out that it is original research by synthesis to use the method of "genocide claim" that Sarah777 does want to use, which is perhaps her problem?

I propose Alison if you have time that you take a careful look at the activities of user Sarah777. She has already caused editors to raise an extensive and well-supported RfC about her conduct.

thanks Mark MarkThomas 07:23, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Mark, here is the threatened block that you couldn't find.
Please see WP:TPG: Article talk pages should not be used by editors as platforms for their personal views. (emphasis as in the original) If you contravene this, you will be blocked. If there is any matter to be included, then it must be because it is the view of a verifiable secondary source, not because it is your view. Tyrenius 20:58, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
(Sarah777 08:42, 25 June 2007 (UTC))
Mark, I'm already aware of Sarah's RfC and have already made comments there. Right now, I'm recusing myself from intervening here as an admin but as an editor, I'm perfectly entitled to make my voice heard. Frankly, it's pretty evident that this has escalated beyond a simple content dispute. Also, I have no doubt that Tyrenius' intentions here are good and that s/he is attempting to mediate here. Personally, I'm not in favour of bringing the concept of "genocide" into that article but that's by the by. However, I'm not sold on the idea that OR by synthesis is involved here, either - Alison 08:50, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

To call the famine "genocide" sounds like a serious stretch to me. FYI, some of my ancestors were Irish who came to the USA to escape the famine... and they were Protestants. Baseball Bugs 11:39, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

BBL article

Thanks. The browser I used to create the page does not have an integrated spell check. The article is rough right now. I pulled allot of stuff from other WP pages regarding BBL theory to create that article. So as to consolidate all the issues of controversy in one place. Then to document the controversy, both sides of it, and not clutter up every article on the matter with a section on controversy that is about half of the article. That's all I was trying to do there. None of it is orriginal research. that article has more citation footnotes than most things. Here. thank you again. --Hfarmer 00:14, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi Alison. Thank you for your support and kind words in my RfA, which passed with 95 support, 1 oppose, and 1 neutral !votes. It means a lot to me to have your individual support and the collective support of so many others. I truly will strive to carry myself at a level representing the trust bestowed in me as I use the mop to address the never-ending drips of discontent in need of caretaker assistance.

Have a nice trip...

In case I forget on Saturday, have a nice trip to Ireland. You will be missed by many here in your two weeks of travel though... as well as making vandals rejoice. (Guess I have to do some anti-vandalism work over the next few days...) Just please try to get some sleep before you go. You'll be jetlagged if you edit like that in the plane.... Well anyways, Bon voyage! (Realized its French, but I can't say it in Irish...)--Dark Falls talk 10:20, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Have a great time, although you won't recognize the place since we got the 'lecttrickery in. FlowerpotmaN (t · c) 20:22, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Thank you all so much!! Nearly time to go here, but I'm still wiki-ing, on and off here. I'll miss you all. Jimbo's promised to pay me the same even though I'm on holidays ;) Keep the vandals at bay till I get back - Alison 11:05, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Hope all goes well....

Be safe and have fun. :) Acalamari 17:53, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

I may have missed you before you left. If I have not, I hope you have a really good time re-uniting with your family. If I am too late, then when you get back I hope that you had a really good time with the family. Does that make sense?--Anthony.bradbury"talk" 22:44, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Hope you have a nice holiday. Bon Voyage. Gold♥ 00:42, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
  • Thank you, all of you. I'm about set here. Work stuff is just about done here. All packed and ready. Catch y'all when I get back, if not sooner. Goldheart, I owe you a long email! - Alison 07:16, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Sweet lord!

Yeah I'd say you were a little past due for an archivin'!! :) How does it feel to be so popular? haha Wikidan829 05:04, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Ummm. Not sure, really. I get a lot of requests here for help & things get a little busy around here - Alison 06:33, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Allie, when you have a minute, could you go pick up my dry-cleaning, walk my dog, and buy me pizza? :) Seriously... she does enough work for 5 or 6 admins, not just one! I think it's time for one of these...

  • Oh my!! Thanks, Riana :) So much for WikiBreaks, eh? Packing's nearly done here. Got my hair and nails sorted (wedding coming up back home). Just about set, really. Driving the 380 miles to LA on Sunday/Monday and flying straight out to Dublin. Woohoo! - Alison 06:50, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
  • BTW, you're not exactly a slouch now, yourself. Do you ever get to sleep? - Alison 06:51, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Hehe... I try... I slept yesterday for 12 hours! Quite embarrassing actually ;) Hair and nails sounds like gorgeous fun! Riana (talk) 06:58, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
      • (ec) You deserve it! Today, BTW, was a no-work day. 4 hours of relaxation while I got the hair-and-nails treatment. Last few weeks have been work-sleep-work-sleep. Here's my toesies :) - Alison 07:07, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
      • Wiki-insomniacs... I don't know why vandals even try... (Godly... both of you's) And this is long overdue:

Trip

Hey, enjoy your trip. Are you enjoying your gift from Mr Jobs? I hope you qualified for one...! Safe travels, take care. The Rambling Man 10:31, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks, Rambling! On my way soon here. And yes, I did! Should have it in 4 weeks. One of my good friends in Cork has been two months away in China and just got back last week. BTW, see this pic someone uploaded to Commons last night ;) My silence is lifted now - Alison 10:40, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
    • Awesome news! Well I'm jealous as heck. If you see Steve, tell him to put 3G on it, an optional GPS and I'll buy a truckload when they arrive in Europe! The Rambling Man 10:52, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
      • It badly needs 3G, doesn't it? How and ever, the browsing experience on that thing is amazing. A real web browser, not that WAP nonsense. Oh, and that choose-your-volcemail-message thing - it's worth it for that alone. Gadget-girl strikes again - Alison 11:03, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

RPFF

Hi. I'm a pretty new admin and just did my first 2 page protections. I'd be happy if someone with more experience (like you) could take a quick look and give me your opinion on them. Did I protect them for too long? Pax:Vobiscum 10:45, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Well, if you look at the logs for Negima!?, you'll see that this has been going on for months - since December, and anytime the prot lifted, off they went again. One month is just perfect, IMO. Bunch of anon editors with some weird agenda there. Re. Kevin Sullivan (wrestler), yep - same again. Not only is there silly vandalism, but there's also a revert-war with User:Jmoney32 repeatedly posting some Satanic weirdness thing into the article. He's now been blocked. But yes, two weeks is just perfect to. You might want to paste in the {{pp-semi-vandalism}} templates on the top of the articles, so people know what's going on. Oh, and if you ask User:Steel359 really nicely, he might have something to help you make the job easier :) So far - excellent work. And congratulations on your shiny new mop and bucket! - Alison 11:00, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Dear Allie

Sweet Allie, I've wanted to email you for the last couple of days, yet just now that I was about to get started, I see I may not get to you in time before your departure. I'm still writing to you, but just in case, have a pleasant trip and a beautiful and relaxing vacation! Say hi and conas ta tu to your marvelous country for me, and have a pint of Guinness, all the way up! ;) Love you girl, please, take good care, k? xoxox Phaedriel - 16:24, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Oh Sharon, sweetie. Thank you so much for that. My talk page has exploded with colour! Will email you before I go here. Promise. Love you, sis! - Alison 07:22, 30 June 2007 (UTC) (Guinness it is!)

Thanks

Thanks for fixing my userpage. It seems you missed something, so I added it [18]. I'm not sure if I was supposed to change the width of each item, so I left it at 80px for now. Nishkid64 (talk) 16:20, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

  • Oh, I'm sorry. I copy/pasted from Jreferee after he tipped me off about your page. Oops! As regards the width; yes, 80px will still work fine - Alison 00:52, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

old content of deleted article

hi I am looking to get a deleted article re-instanted but after editing its content to be more relevant - the article was on group buying - is there anyway i can get this content?

Thanks Lafir

Hi there Lafir! I think Alison is actually on holiday for a bit, but I'd be happy to help you. Do you remember the name of the article? If you have the title handy, I can just search for it and can most likely paste the content in what is called "userspace" for you to easily access. You can just reply here as I have this page on my "watchlist", which is a list of pages that show up when they are edited. Alternatively, you can just click on my green name and leave a message with me on my own talk page. Hope this helps, mate. Cheers gaillimhConas tá tú? 21:28, 30 June 2007 (UTC)
