Curious

Hello, Oshwah - I don't often look at the Wikipedia:Help desk page, but on May 23, 2017, I happened to see a comment removed, so I looked at it. It was a request for help written by a female editor who seemed to be a non-native speaker of English. She had removed the request because no one had answered it, so I put it back with this edit. Now, I'm trying to find out if anyone ever answered her question, and I can't find anything. Can you help me find out what happened to her request? Thank you, MjolnirPants. I'm just curious, why does the bot archive answered questions so quickly? Is it that there are so many questions and answers that the page would get too long if they weren't archived quickly? Well, since the editor who answered notified the editor who asked the question, I guess there is a link to the question and answer that will work no matter whether it is archived or not, and she'll be able to find it. Most such discussions are only active for a day or two. As you can see, the bot archived discussions where the first comment was dated 4 days prior, as you said, because the page would get unwieldy if discussions were allowed to stick around for much longer. Just a small note for you: Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi. WP:UPE in your paid editing link is about using plain English. I believe the correct policy you were looking for was: WP:PAID. Also, paid editing is a complicated subject and isn't outright prohibited as long as full disclosure is made, see WP:PAID for details about that but you're right that it's frowned upon by many editors and anyone who commits to paid editing is heading for storm-laden waters. Dinah Kirkland - Prego :-)! I don't believe that the Wikipedia app on mobile has functionality that will allow you to upload images, but I could be wrong. Good Day, we would like to have a Wikipedia page for the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals. We are part of the Faculty of Agriculture with the University of Manitoba. Potential misuse of sandbox

Hey! I came across this user's sandbox while scrolling through recent changes: User:Twingrin007/sandbox. The user's contribution to anything outside of the sandbox have been minimal and the only reason for editing the sandbox is for personal amusement. Some of the sections in the sandbox, particularly those that may be seen as attacks towards a particular person are concerning. In the end, it might just be a case of WP:NOTHERE, although I'm not sure if action should be taken against it which is why I wanted to consult you first. Thanks in advance! While we're on the topic of weird sandboxes, I've been monitoring User:Monkey88888888/sandbox for a while now. They seem to be in the same general category as Jiten Dhandha mentioned above (no very significant edits outside their sandbox). This one differs in that it's not an attack page at all. (That deleted version you may see is a copyvio.) Rather, it seems be someone who's too immature (in the young way, not in the bad way) to be editing here right now. I haven't reported them since it's not necessarily against policy (as far as I can remember), and they're pretty inactive at the moment. (After their sandbox was deleted, they said they were moving to Wikia.). Just thought I'd bring it up since we're on the subject. Changes to "1982 Invasion of the Falklands" page.

Hi Oshwah, I am trying to understand why several edits to the above mentioned page were reverted. An initial mistake was made whereby the edits were not properly referenced, however subsequent changes were referenced with links, sources, book titles, page numbers etc. and were still changed back. This particular page is riddled with errors and I would very much like to contribute to improve it, however I need your help and guidance on how to do this properly as there is evidently something which is not up to the mark. So How Is RD1: Copyright Violation Applied?

I'm genuinely trying to figure out what I did that was blatant copyright infringement. I get that I had some text that (apparently) should not have been on my userpage, due to a miscommunication as to how exactly certain work-in-progress things should happen, but I don't believe any of it was copywritten text. I had quotes from news articles, but only excerpts of a sentence or two in order to illustrate what they were supporting. Could you please clarify? PvOberstein (talk)

Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Hilsea

I have a feeling I didn't write it well enough because I am often pressed for time. I thought I was clear about the shared interests, personal attacks and using unsourced POV conspiracy theories as facts but maybe I wasn't.

See Hilsea edits and summaries [1] [2] on New Year's Eve sexual assaults in Germany, an article where Calcoform was warned for doing the same. (basically his entire contributions). Could this be the smoking gun you were looking for? I thought it was pretty clear on 2005 French riots, when a nine-month dormant account miraculously becomes activated 15 minutes after Calcoform says he can't edit the page, to edit it exactly how he wants it.

Although the account has been dormant for a year, I see that the SPI didn't mention User:Entreprenante, who edits from time to time on two of Hilsea's favourite France-and-Arabs related articles. Hilsea Entreprenante (many many more diffs); Entreprenante, Hilsea; Hilsea, Entreprenante. Notice Hilsea stops editing this page after a warning in August 2014, (see User talk:Hilsea), then Entreprenante (with only two edits, both to a page created by Hilsea) starts making similar edits and summaries.

I know everybody sees the world in a different way but I can't see how these three accounts don't pass the WP:DUCK test. Anarcho-authoritarian (talk) 13:10, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi Anarcho-authoritarian! Thanks for leaving a message with your thoughts and questions. I apologize for the delay getting back to you - I've been extremely busy in real life, and I'm just now catching up with my messages and emails. When we apply the duck test, you of course want to include similarities that are blatant and obvious, such as making edits to the same page, or vandalism that looks to be the same disruption. However, there are times that the "elephant in the room" isn't enough to go on in itself. Lets take an example: If two different accounts vandalize the Donald Trump article and they both add text that say that he is a bad president or something like that, that's obviously not enough for us to prove that these accounts are the same people. The article subject and topic is a very contentious and controversial one; certainly there are many people who have this opinion and would vandalize the article in the same way and with similar words. In many cases, it's best to find and include evidence that are small, subtle and outside the "the elephant in the room". I'll give you a couple of examples and explain what I investigated in the SPI you mentioned here:

First thing I always check: Were these accounts created within a very short time span of one another? Or were any of the suspected accounts created immediately after the master or other suspected sock account blocked or reverted? That's a big one that I always include in an SPI (as well as look at when investigating a report) - if the accounts were created within minutes or a very short time span of one another, that a big red flag... especially if they're both targeting the same pages and with the same kind of disruption... it brings all of the other evidence you provide into perspective.

Are they targeting the same pages? Are they making the same disruption such as vandalism, edit warring, or POV editing? Does one account make a disruptive edit for the other account to "conveniently and coincidentally" follow-up with additional disruption after the first is reverted? Do the accounts make edits on top of one another in a sequence? Do they both appear to be working together despite any sort of collaboration between one another? These things help establish a timeline and probability of sock puppetry.

Finally, here's a big one: If they're adding very similar content, are they making similar spelling errors? Are they using similar spacing within templates and from bracket edges? Listing things in similar order? Referring to the subject the exact same way? Are they referencing the same sources? Are they recreating pages with exactly the same infobox? Spacing? Bracket use? Wikitext organization? Formatting? This is a subtle thing that will certainly provide significant proof to an SPI report.

Mass rollback?

I came across a user who has inserted a promotional link in "external link". At least on 150'articles. Is there any way to easily undo his edits? Maybe through Huggle or AWB?

Hello Oshwah. I hope that you are well. I am afraid that I have to inform everyone that the IP was adding links to the Turner Classic Movies website. The site is not promotional. As far as the filmproject is concerned it is a reliable source and is used as a reference in 1000s of articles. Unlike IMDb its content is not user-generated and is fact checked before being posted to the site. The site is a good supplement to WikiP's articles. Its use as an EL is also approved by the filmproject and that is why templates were made (see Template:Tcmdb name and Template:Tcmdb title) to facilitate its use. Usernamekiran IMO you should restore the links to the articles that you have removed it from though I wont insist. While I can understand why you had concerns about the addition of the links you could have tried asking at the appropriate wikiproject (in this case Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Actors and Filmmakers and/or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Film) as well as Wikipedia:External links/Noticeboard before you start undoing the work of other editors. Okay I just found an other problem. The mass rollback was used improperly here. As you can see the IPs edit did not add an EL. Rollback is a powerful tool - mass rollback even more so - but you really need to pay attention to what you are doing when using it. MarnetteD|Talk 00:59, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

I agree, Usernamekiran could have taken this to the External links noticeboard but I think their instinct to rollback spammy-looking edits were correct. WikiProjects seldom have the trust of the community to issue variances to established norms and I remind you that WikiProjects do not OWN articles, either. They were being removed as promotional which they are not. As to #1 that is your opinion you would have to check on them on a case by case basis to see if any info is repeated. I saw the first edit on Meg Ryan, so the "classic" looked odd. That site is owned/run by a channel so it felt inappropriate for EL. After taking a look at the user contrib history, he had spontaneously added the links to many articles, so it felt odd. Hi Thomas.W! The removal of protection was from a request I received because someone wanted to edit that page. It was going to be automatically unprotected less than a week later, so I went ahead and did so - I felt that siding on the side of good faith was the right call to make... plus, the page was only a few days short from being unprotected automatically anyways :-). It's fairly quiet on that talk page now that the IP-hopper knows that I'm keeping a close eye on what the're doing (not totally quiet, though, see Talk:Norse cosmology#Inangard and utangard, I have also deleted multiple other posts there), but they're also repeatedly wasting other editors' time by posting incoherent rants and questions on other pages, such as Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Language#Are the words Muspell, Muspiell, Musburg, and Musbury related?, trying to get other editors' support for their own home-grown theories (see User talk:Bishonen#Norse cosmology for some info about that...). I have looked at the "Biographies of Living Persons" (BLPs) page. There are so many details there. I will need to study all of the guidelines.

I'm not sure how to cite certain updates.

Was just going to start a new section about this whole new "trend of vandalism". I've seen way to many edits related to Ryan Ross the past few days (and even earlier, but it has definitely grown). Any idea what all of this is about? I remember something similar happened, but with less intensity, when a youtuber mentioned an error in an article on Wikipedia and people swarmed to vandalize it. I have no clue where it's originated from, but I'm curious to find out. This vandalism has been going on for at least a few weeks now. I've seen way too much of these mass attacks recently, especially multi-IP/multi-page vandalism, usually the kind of stuff that has sock-puppetry/LTA in the block log that also gets revdel'd quickly. The rate in which just this last wave of disruption came in tells me that this is a mass attack more-so than an LTA. Found the source: [3] (looks like a fan fiction story that was brought to light by someone famous). Also, I noticed that the vandalism is not just surrounding Ryan Ross, but also Brendon Urie. I have a list of 34 accounts that were involved in the vandalism so far, I might've missed a few to be honest, but its probably just worth discarding the list since the vandals aren't worth the time. On a side note, thanks for being so active during this mass attack! 72 - You're not being a bother at all. The only thing that the edit filter currently flags are edits that add "Ryan Ross" to an page. I'm about ready to add "Ryden", "Brendon Urie", and others as well. However, I don't want to do so too quickly; it may confuse other editors who are relying on this filter to patrol recent changes. I'm in support of the addition of "Ryden" and "Brendon Urie" to the edit filter since they seem to be equally relevant in this vandalism trend. But as Oshwah said, its best to take input from everyone first. It seems like the initial spurt of vandal edits has died down. Hope it stays that way. Also, I have a few accounts in my list that have usernames blatantly violating the username policy by mentioning the word RyanRoss in it (or something similar). The reality is that the person who added Draycott was adding a common misspelling because there are people from elsewhere who assume the spelling is exactly like the Draycott village in their locale. There are two reasons why it is important to note that Draycott is inaccurate, primarily because the village's official name is not Draycot or Draycott. The second reason is so that outsiders do not think villagers spell the name as Draycott. When people speak to each other they sometimes say Draycot, but more often they say Draycot Cerne. Question about adding a topic

I have a question about adding a topic. There is no definition or topic on here about "Positive Media Company". This is a new trend in movie and TV production for companies that create inspiring content but do not want to use the label of faith based because it does not fit. I think it would be a great addition. I started to add this with a simple one sentence definition but that was deleted.

Advice needed

Ho Oshwah. Earlier today I (very foolishly) closed an AfD as a merge w/o first looking to see how difficult the merge is going to be. And of course, it looks like it's going to be a pain in the @$$ mainly due to the two articles using different referencing formats. And as the AfD closer I think I should at least help with the merge if possible. So, it looks like the Bernie or Hillary? article is simply listing all of the references manually under the references section, and then citing them throughout the article using <ref name="Example" />. We need to move the references from the ref list and replace the reference name calls throughout the article, then replace the manual list with {{reflist}} at the end. After we're done doing that, performing the merge will be much easier. If you'd like, I can fix the references on Bernie or Hillary? and get the article ready. Request for advice

I see that you're active in page protection, which is a chunk of the admin world that I've never really delved into. So, I have a question for you.

An editor left a note on my talk page, asking to have an article (Dick Felt) renamed that he said was about his father, because it's attracting vandalism. I told him that I didn't think the rename would stick, because it appears that his dad was known by that name in his field (football player), but that it might be possible to protect the page. I've poked around, though, and I'm not sure the vandalism is persistent enough to fit the criteria. I can imagine how this guy feels though, so I'd like to help him out if there's a way. Could you please have a look and let me know what you think?

Hi Mlaffs! Sure, I'll be more than happy to take a look and give you my thoughts and input. The page is definitely not eligible for any kind of protection, as there have only been two edits made to the article this year - so it's definitely long long away from even being considered. While I'm not sure about what the article's title (or this person's name) should be, I think that the best thing to do is use the name that he's known for and referred to by reliable sources. They're what we trust to verify content and information, and they definitely have more weight than anything else. Remember that there's conflict of interest here, which means that the user really must refrain from editing or even participating in discussions involving this article. I do see that he's trying to do the right things: he's making requested moves instead of trying to move the page himself, and I also see participation on the article's talk page - that's great! While he has edited the article in the past, he hasn't done so recently - so major props to him for asking for help instead of turning to disruptive editing like we see many others frequently do. While we can't really verify any editor's claims of relations to article subjects or others, this seems legit to me and WP:AGF definitely applies. We should let him know about WP:COI, offer to be available to help make edits or changes when he needs us to (as opposed to having him make the edits himself), make sure the article is free of vandalism and has good references, and let things go from there. Let me know if you need any more input or assistance from me, and I'll be more than happy to do so. I hope my response helped; please make sure that he knows that I'm available and willing to help as well, in the event you're not online and he needs assistance. I added a definition to rape, which was not included on Wikipedia's page. It was immediately taken down. Why was my definition of digital rape deleted? Why was it not included in the first place?

In the USA, this is a weed that can cause excessive itchy rashes, blistering, and can be somewhat like the reaction to poison ivy. It tends to stick to one's skin first and if one's skin is scratched while doing gardening and weeding, the sticky plant can cause excessive irritation that starts in the scratched areas and that can last for up to a few weeks. It can also cause rashes that spread and continue to itch. Eating the plant would be ill-advised and one should avoid skin contact to it. When removing it, use a long rake and twirl the rake to pick up the long extension arms of the weed which climbs over and in bushes and garden ground. Always keep skin covered with long sleeves and wash clothing after wearing it during weeding. Cold water washing of skin with soap several times can often remove any remnants left by plant on the skin. It should be done soon after skin contact to avoid later rashes and itching. For the many who have reactions to this plant, wearing gloves and long sleeves and long pants while removing them is a necessity.

Huh. Interesting. I disagree that the page protection request wasn't necessary, but everyone is going to have different thoughts and views. We can't please everyone... what's the best thing to do? Random Questions out of Curiousity

Hello,

Thank you for being a great administrator on Wikipedia. I just have some questions about Wikipedia users. How do users/administrators detect errors or vandalism so quickly on remote pages of Wikipedia? I admit I did some tomfoolery in the past, and learned my mistakes, but I am amazed that the users find it so quickly, in literally seconds, when Wikipedia has thousands of edits per minute. Also, in the talk page, how do we get messages within seconds as well? It is truly amazing, but I am just curious about the efficency and speed of Wikipedians.

This is from the Wikipedia page on the massacre:-

The massacre began simultaneously in three settlements along the glen—Invercoe, Inverrigan, and Achnacon—although the killing took place all over the glen as fleeing MacDonalds were pursued. Thirty-eight MacDonalds from the Clan MacDonald of Glencoe were killed by the guests who had accepted their hospitality, on the grounds that the MacDonalds had not been prompt in pledging allegiance to the new monarchs, William and Mary. Another forty women and children died of exposure after their homes were burned.

NPOV- Hyles-Anderson College

The attribute is very true, having been to HAC several times when I was involved with Lighthouse Baptist Church in Tennessee- which the pastor, Dave Baker, is very close to HAC. The structure of the church, as well as the stratification of women, and the use of younger college students by pastors and members of the deaconate (who were elderly), are very synonymous. As well, the planting of churches with identical doctrine, which ultimately is to turn the United States into a Christian theocracy, based on their dominionist beliefs. I made the edits in mind with NPOV, since there are many that do agree with the notion of HAC being an inspiration. Bit of a conflict

I think we got our wires crossed a bit here. I assumed the author blanked it once they realized they mucked up the caps on the title, but it looks like I moved it to the correct title about a split second before you deleted what you thought was the wrong title, and apparently the delete followed the move. I'm not sure if it was a big deal, I don't think there was a substantive page history that would require a hist merge. But it might not hurt to take sec to look and make sure. I formally request that you unblock User:Paramount Pctures, as the user name does not, in fact, violate the Username policy. That policy prohibits Usernames that unambiguously represent the name of a company, group, institution or product, but given the spelling, this name does not do so. The policy also prohibits usernames that imply the likelihood of shared use, but I see no such implication here. On what grounds did you block? Even with the missing letter in 'Pictures', I felt that the username still fell into the 'company name' username policy guidelines. You're of course welcome to unblock the user; I have concerns and I still believe the username to be a violation of WP:UPOL, but I also agree with you out of principle and I don't object to you with unblocking at all. If there's a block that comes into question (such as this one), unblocking is usually always better than blocking. @DESiegel: DESiegel, I happened to notice this discussion. I endorse the block and think it was quite correct, given that the user clearly intended the name to be read as "Paramount Pictures", and the minor typo does not change that it will in fact be read that way (I doubt most people even notice the missing letter). At the very least, as you do not seem to have gained much support for your position, I think the matter should be taken to AN rather than handled by a unilateral unblock if you still wish to challenge it. Shepherd's Pie image edit

Hi, you messaged me about an amendment I made to remove a totally inappropriate and wholly unrepresentative image of a "Shepherd's Pie", suggesting I had done it unintentionally, as you believed I hadn't provided an edit reason. No, it was intentional and I did enter edit reasons, so I'm unclear how you are not seeing them? I am typing the reason in the "Reason for editing" field and made it clear why I have done so. The image now on the page is a correct example of Shepherd's Pie. Hopefully you can see the reasons for editing and understand why. The previous, and now replaced image, would not be acknowledged as a Shepherd's Pie by anyone who has ever eaten one or made one. Reviving a defunct WikiProject

Hey Oshwah. Hope you are well.
Currently, me and user Northamerica1000 are working on revival of wikiproject organised crime. He has been helpful a lot. The discussion regarding this task has taken place at several places, mostly at Notheramerica's talkpage. I would love to hear your suggestions/ideas about how to improve the wikiproject, and how to attract editors to the project (even if not "full-time"). Also, I have doubts about "how to post the project template on so many articles that fall under the project's scope", and "how to create a list like this?" I heard both of these tasks can be done through bots, but I dont know how to get it done.

Aura (paranormal)

I'm sorry to bug you about this, but please reconsider semi-protection? The IP-hopping editor yet again changed the referencing style without explanation (the article was previously protected for the same reason in the past). There is no way to know why this occurs because there never was discussion (other than by another editor who significantly contributed, with myself on the talk page). It seems to me that semi-protection on a rather stable article is easier than having to deal with IP-hopping disruptive editing... I'm looking at the article again, and I see what you're seeing - disruption by different IPs, which come back to being from a mobile provider and with a really wide range. I agree that something needs to be done, but I can't protect this page either... the rate and frequency of disruption doesn't call for that. Let me look into the contributions from a few subnet ranges and figure out how to properly take care of this. You're right, it has been rather quiet recently. The aforementioned editor (who I invited to audit the citation style) also made minor improvements and added the page to his watchlist, which is likely to help when/if the editor changes the citation style again. It still puzzles me why this editor was so insistent, I wondered if there couldn't be a mirror site that doesn't support all citation templates where this article is being synchronized. PaleoNeonate - You're going to run into many editors who are "insistent" (as you put it) like this. It's hard at times to discern a user's intent by looking at their edits alone - hell, I still face challenges with doing it correctly sometimes. What makes it easy, though is that we're supposed to give the benefit of the doubt if the situation is at all unclear. That policy actually makes life easier if you think about it, you know? ;-)

When it comes to adding page protection, I typically only consider it if the disruption or problematic edits are occurring by more than one user. In my mind, if we've applied page protection to an article solely because of the disruption or edits by one person (other than mass flooding of vandalism by an LTA user or course... lol), it's typically because we failed somewhere and didn't do our due diligence first. We either haven't educated the user in good faith and offered to help so that they'll understand and learn, or we haven't warned the user properly and reported them to the proper channel so that it's handed on an individual basis. If anything, protecting a page due to the actions of only one user would be giving them what they want if their intent is to disrupt to get their way - "Okay, I'll disrupt the page, then get it protected so nobody else can edit it". I try not to give the squeaky wheel the oil if you know what I mean ;-).

But fear not... this stuff all comes with experience; we all improve and become more proficient in areas like this over time. I'm glad you appreciated the follow-up. In a nutshell: you shouldn't modify, edit, or even participate in discussions that involve topics or article subjects that you have a personal conflict of interest with. Doing so makes it nearly impossible to write content that reflects a neutral point of view. You should instead focus on different articles that you don't have a conflict of interest with and that interest you. It's an important principle on Wikipedia for all content to be neutrally worded and reflected; conflict of interest makes this principle nearly impossible to justify such. Hi Oshwah. Would you mind taking a look at Special:Contributions/Hazza74? It's a new account with only three edits who keeps on trying to add negative information about some referees to 2016 NFL season. I can't tell if this just a fan holding a grudge or an actual good faith attempt to add such information. Of course, negative information is not automatically bad if verifiable and relevant, but not sure what can be done without any citations to reliable sources for verification. Moreover, the editor does not seem to be checking their user talk, so not sure if a more personal messgae would help them understand what is needed. I don't think this has reached the WP:ANV stage yet, but the account will likely end up there or at WP:AN3 if it continues to make these types of edits. Marchjuly - Whelp, the content s/he's trying to add is unreferenced, so that's the user's first problem (lol). I'd leave a custom message on the user's talk page, offer to help the user, let them know what the issues are, and provide him/her with the appropriate guides (WP:NPOV, WP:CITE, WP:RS). We should try and assume that the user wants to learn and understand. If the edits keep happening after that, warn further and report it it gets out of hand. Since good things are said to come in threes, here's one more that you an perhaps help with. Youth Setbo FC was softblocked for a username violation. I asked the blocking admin for clarification about this at User talk:GorillaWarfare#User:Youth Setbo FC and it seems that a change in username is all that is needed to get the account unblocked. The editor, however, does not seem to understand this or dore not seem to care and has been repeatedly copying-and-pasting Cambodia national football team onto their talk page for some reason: perhaps they are working on a draft. Unfortunately, they will never get anywhere as long as they are blocked, and also might get labled as WP:NOTHERE or WP:IDHT if they continue to use their talk page likes. They also might have accidentally edited why logged off. Hi Marchjuly - Yeahhh, usernames with Something Something FC (with the letters FC at the end and spaced like that) are an indicator that it represents a Football team or Football club (which is what the FC letters stands for). GorillaWarfare is correct in that a username change request or the creation of a new account with an acceptable username is all the user needs to in order to continue editing as before. Yes, it does appear that there might be a communication issue here. I've replaced the content on the user's talk page with the block notification. Let's see what happens from there. Thank you for checking on this. I understand and agree with the username block. I'm just not sure the blocked user understands it. The talk page has been blanked a few times by others, but the content kept being added. I did try to explain what had happened and offered to move the content to a user subpage, but that post was just removed and replaced by the same content. Maybe the block notice you added will help, but GorillaWarefare added a similar notice and it was just removed.
