Rowley Jefferson's Awesome Friendly Adventure is the second installment in the Diary Of A Wimpy Kid spin-off series based on Rowley Jefferson, Greg Heffley's best friend.
Plot[edit]
Roland is a young boy living in medieval times who plays the flute and listens to his parents wisely. He often spends his time indoors due to the existence of ogres and giants but wants to follow in his uncle Bampy's footsteps and go on adventures. One day, Roland's father leaves and asks Roland to take care of his mother, which he agrees to. While Roland is practicing his flute, it suddenly gets very cold in his room, and Roland looks outside to discover it is snowing, despite being in the summer months. He goes downstairs to tell his mother but is unable to find her. Roland asks his neighbor what happened and learns that the White Warlock took his mother and will make her his queen. Worried about what his father might say, Roland ventures out to save his mother.
When Rowley shows the story to his mom, she tells him that she cannot wait to see what happens next. When Rowley shows the book to Greg, thinking that he would like it due to his love of fantasy, he criticizes it, stating that there are a lot of problems with the book, such as the book starting with "Once upon a time," Roland's long hair, and Roland attempting to rescue his mother. Greg then gets the idea to monetize the book by publishing it and having it adapted into a screenplay, offering to help Rowley manage the writing and profits. Rowley agrees and the two begin working on the book together.
Roland, anxious about the outside world, asks his best friend Garg, a barbarian, to come with him. When they arrive at the village shop, they buy essentials like food, torches, and a map.
Rowley shows the new chapter to Greg, who laments about the lack of action or events in it. However, he likes the use of himself as a bodybuilding barbarian and suggests monetizing the book further by putting an emphasized focus on Garg. Greg discusses making action figures based on the book, with several variants of the characters (mainly Garg, seldom Roland) and then manufacturing playsets for the action figures. Roland then discusses giving Santa Claus a role in the story, much to Greg's disgust.
Garg and Roland begin their adventure walking towards the Ice Fortress, but Roland gets a blister and has to be carried by Garg. Later that night, the blister reminds Roland of his mother, causing him to cry. The next morning, Garg and Roland arrive at a village just like theirs, however, the villagers are extremely dumb as school was yet to be invented. Garg and Roland help the villagers clear a rockslide before having dinner and going to bed, but the next morning when they were about to leave the villagers complained that they had something else to do. Garg and Roland stay behind to clean the horse stables, which had been filthy for years. The next morning, Garg and Roland are given an entire list of chores for the village, which gets increasingly simpler and more frivolous, from washing pigs to painting fences. Even if Roland taught the villagers to do it on their own, they would misunderstand.
This was Rowley's favorite chapter of the book yet, as Roland was being a great role model for kids, but Greg thinks otherwise, saying that kids would think Roland was a "sucker" for doing the entire village's chores. Greg then suggests bringing Garg and Roland off the main road to prevent any more meet-ups, as he feels the adventure has not even started yet. Greg then suggests putting monsters into the story, but Rowley opts for fairies instead. Greg tells Rowley that if he does put fairies into the story, he should put trolls into the story that eat the fairies, much to Rowley's disgust.
Roland tells the villagers that he really must get going, but the villagers tell Roland that, if he does save his mother, he should bring her back to the village so she can help as well. Afterward, Roland and Garg take a shortcut through the Tangled Forest, discovering an enchanted pixie village. The pixies tell Roland that they live in harmony with nature, unlike the trash-covered trolls at the bottom of the mountain they are on. When Roland tells the pixies about his quest, the pixies tell Roland that, just in case, he should carry some weapons with him. They give Garg a giant spiked club and lead Roland to a sword in a stone. The sword can only be extracted by a person with a pure heart. Garg attempts to pull out the sword, but he is unable to. Then Roland attempts to pull out the sword and is successful. This makes him proud, as this means he is pure of heart, and that his parents raised him correctly.
Greg criticizes the fact that, while Garg was not able to pull out the sword, Roland was able to. He guesses that Garg loosened the sword, allowing Roland to pull it out. Roland then tells Greg the story of the sword; it was forged in the flames of Mount Friendly by a wizard named Walter the Wonderful. Greg asks for the name of the sword, and Roland replies with "Jeremy," causing Greg to break out into laughter. Greg then asks for the sword's abilities, and Rowley tells him that the sword can make evil people good, once again causing Greg to break out into laughter. Greg then tells Rowley that the "sword in a stone" concept has already been made into a movie and that Rowley will be sued. Greg likes that the characters have weapons, as they could be made into Nerf toys, much to Rowley's shock.
After leaving the pixies, Roland and Garg are unable to see in the dark and roll down a hill. The two end up surrounded by filthy trolls, who take them to their leader. The troll leader apologizes for their filthiness, and points out that the pixies throw their trash down the hill every night; the trash ends up in Troll Town. The trolls are filthy because they spend all their time trying to clean up the garbage, and because they don't take baths. Roland is incensed, and takes the trolls up the hill to the pixies. Roland scolds the pixies, but the pixies tell Roland that they dump their trash in Troll Town because the trolls are constantly eating them, which the troll leader confesses to. Roland has the pixies promise not to dump their trash in Troll Town, and has the trolls promise not to eat more pixies. Afterward, Roland teaches everyone how to deal with trash properly, restoring peace to the Tangled Forest.
Greg likes the new monsters, but criticizes the recycling message, and tells Rowley to remove it. Rowley tells Greg that he wants to put a lot of messages into the book, but Greg tells Rowley that kids want action and not messages. Greg then suggests rewriting the chapter into a battle between the fairies and pixies, allowing them to make a video game about it. Rowley's parents don't allow him to play violent video games, so Rowley suggests making an educational game instead. Greg decides to move on, and pulls out a book of mythical creatures so Rowley can decide what monsters to put in next. Rowley decides against it, as the monsters in the book are copyrighted, but Greg tells him that the people who copyrighted the monsters have long been dead, and so the monsters are now in the public domain. Rowley decides, although reluctantly, to use the monsters and popular characters.
Roland and Garg leave the Tangled Forest, and later arrive at the Razor Range. The mountains were too steep to climb, so Roland and Garg go towards the Boulder Pass, only for a violent thunderstorm to hit. The two take shelter in a nearby cave. In the cave, they find dozens of statues of popular characters, such as Huckleberry Finn, the Cowardly Lion, and Thor, the God of Thunder. Garg decides to smash the statues, causing a mess that Roland disapproves of. Garg is about to smash a statue of a detective when the statue comes to life. Turns out it was not a statue, but rather Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock had been there to study the mysterious disappearances in the Razor Range, and the clues led him to the cave. It turns out all the missing people were petrified by Medusa. Sherlock tells everyone to close their eyes and stay still, just as Medusa walks by. Garg opens an eye to peek, and is petrified. Roland and Sherlock hide in Medusa's bathroom, but are trapped. Searching the room to escape, Sherlock notices that Medusa has no mirror. He concludes that Medusa cannot look at her own reflection, or she will petrify herself; in order to escape, Roland needs to find a mirror. Roland knows that Garg has a mirror in his bag, and digs into it, creating noise that catches Medusa's attention. Roland reflects Medusa's image, but Medusa reflects it again with a metal shield, inadvertently petrifying Sherlock. Medusa then unsuccessfully tries to convince Roland to open his eyes. Roland thinks about Medusa's snakes, and realizes that they are angry because she is using a shampoo that irritates their eyes. Roland gives Medusa a bottle of gentle shampoo, and she showers with it, calming the snakes. Medusa comes out of the shower, asking Roland if he thinks she is beautiful. Roland still thinks Medusa is ugly, but does not speak.
Greg praises the inclusion of the characters from classic books, as the book will likely be featured in libraries. Greg then suggests replacing Roland with a more popular character. Greg also likes having Medusa in the book as she is popular, and that they could turn her into a hair-styling toy. Greg, however, criticizes Sherlock Holmes' pipe, as the book may be banned for that reason, but Rowley reassures Greg that there is nothing in the pipe, and that it is just part of the detective costume.
Medusa allows Roland to leave her cave, but Roland knows he cannot continue without Garg. Roland asks Medusa if she knows a way to un-petrify the statues, and she tells him to find the One-Eyed Wizard in the Burnt Swamp. Roland leaves Medusa's cave to search for the Wizard in the Burnt Swamp, eventually finding him via a light in his cavern. The One-Eyed Wizard tells Roland that he had been watching Roland for a long time, and knew the whole story. Roland is then told that the White Warlock wanted to create a permanent winter, and make Roland's mother her queen by erasing her memories; the worst part being that Roland would become the White Warlock's stepson. However, the White Warlock cannot do that until the next crescent moon in ten days. The White Wizard's Ice Fortress is surrounded by a very large and very thick ice wall, and nobody has ever gotten through it.
Greg criticizes the new chapter, as it is basically just two guys talking in a swamp, but when Rowley suggests adding more action, Greg tells him to keep the scene the same, as this will be the point in the movie where everyone uses the bathroom and refills their soda and popcorn. Greg then says the bigger problem is the lack of women in the story. Rowley tells Greg that Medusa is a woman, but Greg says she doesn't count because she is a monster, and tells Rowley that he has to put regular women into the story or else only men will bother to watch it. Greg also criticizes the "endless winter" concept, as it is overused, and tells Rowley to change it. Rowley suggests an endless spring, but Greg criticizes the idea, saying that everyone likes spring. Rowley decides to keep the "endless winter" concept.
